Green Bay is getting some help from the state to spruce up the downtown riverfront area.
Governor Tony Evers recently announced a $1.3 million grant for Brown County and the
port of Green Bay to help move the coal piles out of the downtown area.
The money is coming from the Harbor Assistance Program.
The coal will be relocated to a new site near the mouth of the Fox River, part of a major
infrastructure and redevelopment effort.
The entire project is expected to cost more than $40 million.
Green Bay is among five school districts urging state lawmakers to help struggling families
with better school funding.
Superintendents from Wisconsin's five largest school districts, including Green Bay, are
publicly pushing political representatives to use part of the state's budget surplus
to address school funding shortfalls, citing rising costs that affect both families and
schools.
In Oshkosh contractor accused of pocketing money for projects all around North East Wisconsin
appeared in court this week, 46-year-old Jesse Van Boxel, the owner of Millennium
Construction, faces charges in what officials are calling a large Ponzi scheme.
Van Boxel faces four criminal counts of theft by contractor over $100,000, in addition
to counts of wire fraud and loan fraud.
According to the criminal complaint, Van Boxel co-mingled money from various projects
in Brown, Door, Audi Gamy, and Winnebago counties.
He's accused of making lavish purchases for himself instead of using the fund supplied
by business owners to pay subcontractors or purchase supplies.
The judge set a $1 million signature bond for Van Boxel, who also had to surrender his
passport.
His next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on February 11th.
Van Boxel is also the subject of several civil lawsuits related to Millennium Construction.
Most of us around North East Wisconsin know about this speed trap in Rosendale, but apparently
one Green Bay woman didn't get that memo.
Wandoat County Sheriff's deputies say they clocked her going 130 miles per hour in a 55-zone
around 2.30 a.m. Wednesday morning, that led to a high-speed chase after deputies tried
unsuccessfully to pull her over with lights and sirens.
They say she blew through Rosendale on Highway 26 at speeds over 100 miles per hour, passing
cars on the left and heading south.
Authorities say the chase continued for about 13 miles as the woman sped back up to more
than 130 miles per hour, eventually turning into a farm field to try to escape.
Officers deployed stopsticks and ultimately a moving roadblock to stop the car before
it went into a residential neighborhood.
Once stopped, deputies say the woman refused to get out of the car.
They broke the car window to get her out and used tasers as she resisted arrest.
The driver was booked into the Van toat County jail on recommended charges of felony,
illude, second degree recklessly endangering safety, and resisting an officer.
She also got a speeding ticket for going 130 in a 55-zone.
Meanwhile, police and Madison are proactively trying to stop speeders on the belt line
after stopping a woman this week who was going 93 miles per hour with two kids in the car,
neither in proper car seats.
Madison police say a three-year-old in the car was not in a car seat and a one-year-old
was sitting in a car seat but not properly buckled.
Officers cited the woman for recklessly driving, operating with a refoked license and speeding.
She also got two child safety violations, with news at the top and bottom of the hour.
