From the 97.9 WGBW Newsroom, I'm Lisa Hale with this local news update. A 21-year-old Marinette man is charged with second-degree reckless homicide in connection with the drowning death of 13-year-old Jacob Bowerman. Tyler Robert Birch, along with a 16-year-old, is accused of throwing Bowerman into the water at the Marinette Pier on August 20th. Birch is being held on a $500,000 cash bond.
He's due back in court on September 22nd. Young people interested in a career in law enforcement have a new way to achieve their goals. UW Green Bay has launched a new criminal justice bachelor's degree. The degree covers knowledge areas like juvenile and criminal law, drug abuse, human trafficking, and forensic science.
UW-GB introduced criminal justice as a minor in 2021. The university anticipates that half of the current minors will switch to the major focus and expects to see about 30 new criminal justice students enroll each year.
The man holding the second highest office in the United States was in Wisconsin yesterday. Vice President J.D. Vance visited mid-city steel in lacrosse highlighting the one big beautiful bill act, supported by President Donald Trump's administration. Vance was the tie-breaking vote that secured that bill's passage through the U.S. Senate.
This visit is one of several that Vance has made during August in swing states. He also visited Georgia and Pennsylvania this month.
An added alert for missing children has helped save more missing kids over the past year. Melissa K has the story. The Wisconsin Department of Justice is raising awareness on Wisconsin's missing child alerts. For a little over a year now, they have expanded options to alert the public to missing children.
This is different from an amber alert, which requires that the missing child be in danger of serious bodily harm or death. Since the first missing child alert was sent in August of 2024, a total of 17 alerts were issued for 14 children. During the same time frame, four amber alerts were issued for five children.
A state ban on the sale of non FDA approved vape products is set to go in effect on Monday. The legislation states that only non nicotine or menthol flavored vape products that have been approved by the FDA can be sold at shops in Wisconsin.
A group of vape shop owners filed a lawsuit against the legislation in June with a court date scheduled this week. They say if the ban goes into effect, the state could lose millions of dollars in tax revenue and they could be subject to thousands of dollars in fines if they continue to sell the products.
The Wisconsin state patrol is increasing their focus on preventing impaired driving ahead of the Labor Day weekend. The annual drive sober or get pulled over campaign will run through September 1.
The state patrol will be assigning more patrol vehicles and troopers to seek out impaired drivers on the roads near the holiday and their warning residents in advance so they can plan ahead.
The government should have sober designated drivers if they plan to consume alcohol and should be prepared to use public transportation options if needed.
Meanwhile, to make roads safer during the busy Labor Day holiday weekend, AAA is activating its toe-to-go programming Wisconsin. Starting at 6 o'clock tonight through 6 a.m. Tuesday, the service will provide free, confidential rides,
drivers and will tow their vehicles within a 10 mile radius. Since its inception about 25 years ago, toe-to-go has been instrumental in saving lives, removing nearly 30,000 impaired drivers from the road.
More than 12,000 lives were lost in alcohol-related crashes in 2023. That's the equivalent to one death every 42 minutes.
This weekend is the unofficial last weekend of summer and the Wisconsin DNR is reminding the thousands of residents and visitors expected to visit the state's lakes and rivers this weekend to wear life jackets.
More in 2025, there have been 12 voting fatalities in the state. In common with many of them, a life jacket was not worn. This Labor Day weekend voters are reminded to stay sober, maintain a safe speed, and let someone know your route and when you expect to return.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is once again reminding ATV and UTV riders to drive safely and wear a helmet ahead of the Labor Day weekend.
According to DNR data, there have been 25 fatal ATV and UTV crashes so far this year, with a major contributing factor in those fatalities being that the riders did not have a helmet or were not using a seatbelt.
There were a total of 40 fatal ATV and UTV crashes last year, of which 85% of the victims weren't wearing a helmet.
The resident should also remain sober if they plan to use ATVs and UTVs.

The Bucky's will proceed for now. A Milwaukee County judge dismissed a lawsuit aimed at blocking the massive Bucky's travel center plan for Oak Creek.
The ruling was against a group called Oak Creek Neighbors United. They had claimed that the project approval was illegal.
This missile means Bucky's can continue moving forward with plans for a 73,000 square foot store along I-94 near the Milwaukee Racine County line.
The next step for the project is a final review by the Oak Creek Plan Commission.

Who signed a four year deal with the team worth $188 million, making him the highest paid player in the league other than a quarterback.
Parsons the most feared past Russia ending his time with the Cowboys. Mark Murphy, who retired a month ago as Packers CEO, was holding a press conference at his induction into the team hall of fame when the news broke and said he knew nothing of the deal.
Oh, so what did they give up, Brett?
The Packers giving up their first round pick next year and in 2027 and nine year veteran Kenny Clark, college football, the Badgers beat Miami of Ohio 17 to nothing, but starting quarterback Billy Edwards had to leave the game in the second quarter with a leg injury.
I don't have any answers on Billy, so good to see though that he was back out there, you know, able to be a part of the game and be with our team and things like that.

On your entertainment beat, I'm Pete Schwabba. Actor Adam Sandler has decided to make yet another attempt at a serious movie role.
Oh, Joey, it's not a total attempt as Jay Kelly is labeled by Variety as a dramedy.
Sandler will play a tell it like it is showbiz manager to the film's title character played by George Clooney.
How excited is Sandler to be part of the project? He said recently at a presser for the Venice film festival, holy s**t, I can't believe I'm getting this gift.
Break a leg at him and clean up the potty mouth. Speaking of Sandler, he recently played a song at the 50th anniversary Saturday Night Live Gala.
One of the lyrics was, 50 years of finding out your favorite musician is anti-Semitic.
There has been speculation as to who Sandler was referring to. He declined to answer as saying there have been many over the years, but Kanye crazy town west claimed in a tweet on X, which makes no sense.
It was him, referencing Sandler when he said, Adam Sandler, thank you for the love. Is Kanye clueless or crazy? Just like with many people on the X Twitter, it's hard to tell.
How popular is Taylor Swift? Even the people on the periphery of her world are getting rich.
Dancing with the Stars is in season 34 and according to therap.com, Jan Ravnik will join the celebrity side of Dancing with the Stars.
Ravnik recently was a member of the dance squad on the Swift's era's tour. The full cast of dancers for season 34 will be announced September 3rd on Good Morning America.
Ooh, not sure I can wait that long. Earlier this week on Nightlight we discussed Aliens and Ghosts, which is typically a fun topic that gets a variety of reactions.
Recently some star power has been added to the belief that Aliens exist. Actress Emma Stone says she believes in Aliens.
She may have ulterior motives as she is playing a CEO captured by a conspiracy group who believes she is an alien sent to destroy Earth in the new film Bagonia, which hits theaters this October.
When you're part of a studio talk show audience and the Warm-Up Act tells you to do the wave when you hear the word banana, you just do it.
Because why wouldn't you? Just don't do the wave when the host coincidentally says banana in her monologue.
That is what happened on the Ellen DeGeneres show and it made her furious when she realized that writer and audience Warm-Up Act Greg Fitt Simmons was behind it.
It wasn't on purpose, but he had to step onto the stage and tell the audience that they should no longer do the wave when they hear that word.
Ellen's talk show ended after 19 years due to what sources say was a toxic environment. Fitt Simmons confirmed those rumors on the We Might Be Drunk Podcast.
He did give her props and said she was an incredible stand-up. The writer comedian said at first the show was very chill, but after some success she got very difficult and would make younger writers cry.
DeGeneres left America after the last election, but says she is not done with show business. Sounds like show business might be done with her.
