Democratic candidate for governor and state representative Francesca Hong says her campaign is powered by and for the community.
Isabell Nietto reports when a candidate takes corporate pack money, a pack money.
They are beholden to those large donors and not so much the everyday person.
We're really proud to have over 7,400 individual donations.
And I think that makes us even more beholden to the people and not the corporations.
That's Hong and an appearance on the WXCO Morning Show on Monday.
Her campaign message emphasizes grassroots organizing and small donors.
She's also active on social media.
As much as I would like to be everywhere doing everything.
Sometimes meeting voters where they are or where they are in terms of the digital spaces as well.
Hong says she aims to make government accessible.
These are also where folks are having important conversations and want to know more about their elected officials.
So we've really chosen to make sure that we're communicating clearly what our campaigns about on these digital platforms.
Hong wants to create permanent affordability by increasing wages, expanding badger care and public school funding.
She says including these policies in the state budget sets expectations.
So regardless the makeup of the legislature, it's the responsibility of the governor to make sure that there is a clear agenda on what we want to accomplish
to make sure that every Wisconsinites have what they need to have a good quality of life and a life that they can live with dignity.
Hong represents the 76th Assembly District, which includes downtown and the east side of Madison.
She is one of several Democrats vying for the state's top seat and identifies herself as a Democratic Socialist.
A Green Bay High School graduate was shot and killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis Saturday morning.

The shooting death of Green Bay native Alex Freddie by ICE agents in Minneapolis over the weekend is hitting close to home in Green Bay.
Thousands braved bitter cold temperatures lining the streets of downtown on Sunday to protest the actions of federal immigration agents.
Outside Preble High School where Freddie was a 2006 graduate, people left flowers, candles and signs remembering Freddie, the makeshift memorial offered messages of sorrow and support for Freddie's family.
Freddie moved to Minneapolis where he worked as an ICU nurse at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Those who knew Freddie and Green Bay describe him as a fun, talented and compassionate friend whose loss has sent a shock wave through their close knit community.

Average gas prices have risen 7.6 cents per gallon over the last week for an average of 255 on Monday.
This is 12.2 cents higher than a month ago and over 39 cents per gallon lower than this time last year.
Average gas prices have jumped for the second straight week according to gas body officials, saying this is due to oil prices climbing back above $60 per barrel amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Oil from Iran is struggling to make it to the market under new sanctions. This is tightening supply in addition to the major winter storm sending temperatures below zero, which is likely to impact refineries.
This could cause additional disruptions and reduce output. Officials say these factors could keep both gasoline and diesel prices moving higher in the week ahead.
A plan to make tips tax-free for Wisconsin workers cleared the state Senate last week with support from both parties.
Three Democrats joined Republicans in a 21 to 12 vote to approve the bill, which now heads to the assembly.
The proposal would cut state taxes on tips up to $25,000 a year through 2028.
Backers call this a way to help service workers, while critics argue it does little to fix low base wages in the industry.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is now hiring seasonal workers across the state.
According to a press release, the agency is hiring for a wide range of positions, including park rangers, campground attendants, natural resources, educators, and groundskeepers.
Seasonal work for the agency typically begins in the spring and can run until fall, depending on the candidates availability, as well as the needs of state park, forest, trail, and recreation area properties.
Anyone interested in seasonal work for the agency can submit their application online.
Several Wood County snowmobile trails opened yesterday at 8 a.m. Bakerville snow rovers, Auburndale night owls, Vespers snow drifters, and Rudolph's River Rovers snowmobile trails are now open.
The Wood County Parks and Forestry staff ask that you please ride with caution.
The trails are ice, rough, and in partially ungrimmed conditions. All other trails remain closed at this time.
You can access county trail maps on the Wood County Parks and Forestry Department website.
The Travel Wisconsin snow report lists trails are in fair condition in some wooded areas, and in poor condition in open fields were snow blew off. Please ride with caution.
