A crew with the reality TV show Cops have been filming at the Wood County Jail over the past several weeks.
Sheriff Sean Becker said the filming came about because of contacts he's maintained after attending a leadership training course in Georgia.
And one of them just reached out with a group message going and saying, hey, Cops just filmed TV show, you know, over in our area in Georgia.
Anybody, you know, interested in doing that and especially on a jail side of things and I'm like, wow.
Becker says this is personal for him.
He attended college at UWSP and served in internship with the Stevens Point Police Department.
That was the big hook, but the other part of it was the cops show. It started, you know, during that time frame.
And I remember, I believe it was 7 o'clock Friday nights. I was watching.
Cops aired for 32 seasons when it was canceled in 2020 by the Paramount Network, amid ongoing protests over the role of policing after the murder of George Floyd.
Cops returned in 2021, this time on Fox Nation.
Sheriff Becker said staff at the jail expressed some concerns about the filming.
Staff was a little bit apprehensive, like, oh, really? You know, I'm like, no, this is a highlight of you, you know, and how you treat people and how you work together as a team.
He adds that everyone involved has to sign a release to be on camera.
All staff that is at any footage, they have to sign a release and sort of the inmates.
Becker calls the filming an opportunity.
And with this being, you know, focusing on the jail, I think it gives the not just local community, but the country an opportunity to highlight us.
And I think that's a great bragging moment for all of us to have when you see what our corrections officers do that live here locally in Wood County and how they treat people.
The footage has been sent to LA for editing, and Becker says it will be sent back to the Sheriff's Department for final approval.
Wisconsinites on snap did receive their full food share benefits, albeit a little later than usual, but now there's confusion between the state and federal government.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued a letter to states, including Wisconsin, saying that states were not authorized to issue full snap payments and that states must undo any steps they've taken to issue full snap benefits.
Governor Tony Evers is saying no, leading a coalition of states to reject the effort to take back snap payments already issued.
It's possible you've heard the song, the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Connie Feldman shares a lesser known historical fact about the tune.
Most of us know about it from the song, but today marks a tragic chapter in Great Lakes history.
The massive freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior 50 years ago today, taking the entire crew of 29 men with her.
Meteorologists still study those gales of November from 1975 that produced ocean-sized waves up to 40 feet high, with winds gusting across the lake at 80 miles per hour, according to maritime experts.
The ship, broken into, still lies on the floor of Lake Superior, with her crew still inside, at the request of those left behind.
Family members say they wanted the ship to be memorialized as the crew's final resting place.
The ice-water tomb is a legally protected gravesite. Each year, the actual bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald tolls 29 times for each man lost.
Two years ago, that bell rang 30 times. It's final toll for Gordon Lightfoot, the man who penned and performed the famous tune, the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Deer hunting season is gearing up. Archery Crossbow season is ongoing and the youth hunt took place in October.
The general firearm season doesn't open until November 22nd. However, Portage County is ready to accept your deer carcasses.
They have a dedicated dumpster available at Portage County Solid Waste, now through January 31st.
This free service is available for both in-county and out-of-county residents, but not businesses.
Because of CWD concerns, many Wisconsin landfills no longer accept your carcasses, so you cannot mix them with a regular trash.
The location of the chronic wasting disease testing kiosk and dumpster has moved this year. You'll find it on the east side of the main parking lot at Portage County Solid Waste.
Park Place Adult Day Services is celebrating their 40th anniversary this week. Park Place is an independent nonprofit organization that serves wood and surrounding counties.
Their 40th anniversary open house is this Thursday from 1-3pm in the Centralia Center. This is open to the public and they're located at 220 Third Avenue South in Wisconsin Rapids.
Tuesday is the Community Survey Information Session at Lincoln High School. The Wisconsin Rapids Public School District mailed out a survey last week to inform residents on the financial challenges the district is facing.
They're asking for feedback on school district satisfaction and reaction to a potential referendum. During the information session at 630 tomorrow, Superintendent Ron Rasmussen will go over all of the information in the survey and answer questions.
You'll also be able to tour the TechEd and Ag Departments at the High School after the session. These are the areas the district is looking to upgrade and modernize. That's 630 at Lincoln tomorrow.
You'll have another opportunity to get your hunting rifles sighted in this weekend. It's at the Wood County Rifle and Pistol Club on Saturday and Sunday at their outdoor range. I'm Melissa K for WFHR and WIRI News.
