For Civic Media News, I'm Brittany Marlowe. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and the latest report from the Wisconsin Office of Children's Mental Health shows a spike in the number of young people who are struggling and 1 in 5 adults in the country experience mental illness every year.
The National Alliance on Mental Health says many hesitate to seek help from stigma, fear or uncertainty.
Feeling anxious and uncertain is incredibly normal. Most people feel that way. But also letting them know that we might never feel 100% ready. We might never feel like the right time. We might always have a little bit of anxiety going into it. But usually we have to get through that anxiety and get through that tough experience in order to start to feel better.
That's Jessica Schaefer, a licensed clinical therapist with a spirus health. She says one of the most effective ways to begin improving mental health well-being is through emotional self-awareness.
By tuning into our eternal cues throughout the day, we can address feelings like stress or being overwhelmed before they escalate.
Just like we pay attention to our body, if we're hungry, then that means we need to eat, right? So listening to our emotions, if I'm starting to feel overwhelmed instead of pushing that off throughout the work day or throughout the entire week, maybe I check in with myself, give myself a little bit of break.
And for those looking to support someone else, Schaefer recommends leading with empathy and curiosity. Instead of offering advice right away, start by asking what they need.
Some people are going to want to really share and some people aren't going to feel ready to do that. And we all want and require support in different ways.
And building resilience can start with small but powerful habits, practices like noticing moments of gratitude or surrounding yourself with emotionally supportive people can help you feel more grounded, especially during challenging times.
Find the silver lining and things that are going on in our life.

The Wisconsin man convicted in a murder case that sparked attention around the globe and the creation of a Netflix series gets turned down by the state's highest court. Lisa Hale has the story.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court denied Stephen Avery's latest request for a new trial in his conviction for the murder of Teresa Hoback in 2005.
He's claimed that he should be allowed to present evidence that there is an alternate, unknown suspect responsible for the murder.
The 62-year-old Avery is serving a life sentence for Hoback's murder. He has maintained his innocence, but all appeals have been denied.
Avery's attorney Kathleen Zellner posted Wednesday on social media platform X quote,
As expected, the Wisconsin Supreme Court has denied review of Stephen's petition. Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassy were the subject of the Netflix series making a murderer in 2015, which created global attention for the case.
Port Road in Port Edwards is closed today from 8.30 to 1pm. The road will be closed from Verbunker to the 54-73 intersection. They'll be doing utility work and will allow local traffic only.
The lab pool at the Southwood County YMCA will be closed this morning due to staff illness. The pool located at the Wisconsin Rapids YMCA location will be closed from 7 to 10.45am.
There's a new drive-through coffee shop coming to Marshfield. The site for seven brew drive-through will be breaking ground at the end of June. The two lane drive-through will be located at 1600 North Central Avenue in between House of Heating and Title Wave Auto Spa.
The City of Marshfield Development Services Department says the project is expected to be completed by the end of summer or early fall.

If you're looking for some good old-fashioned, cringe-worthy adult comedy, check out the film Friendship, which goes into why to release this weekend.
If you're in a small town, you might have to roadtrip for the laughs, but it might be worth it as it's pulling a 90% on RT.

Martin Scorsese fans will have a chance to see him on the other side of the camera in a new documentary on Apple TV.
Deadline reports that the famous director will be the subject of a docuseries in five parts from director Rebecca Miller.
Miller is the daughter of playwright Arthur Miller and married to three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis.
In the series, Scorsese will talk about his real-life experiences and how they contributed to his masterful filmmaking.
James Cameron used the old Bugs Bunny reverse psychology trick in getting Leonardo DiCaprio to sign onto Titanic according to Deadline.
When DiCaprio was considered for the part of Jack Dawson, he wanted Cameron to make the character more conflicted.
Similar to other roles, he had played so well to that point in his career.
Cameron didn't want to do that, so he presented Jack Dawson's wholesomeness as yet another challenge to DiCaprio, asking him if he thought he could pull off an unflod character.
DiCaprio took the bait and history was made.
The migration from the silver screen to Broadway continues and Tom Hanks is the latest to journey to the stage.
The role in the play titled This World of Tomorrow shouldn't be too difficult for the Hollywood good guy to handle.
The material is based on his short stories.
The show opens this coming fall in New York, Hanks joins other big screen stars who have made the jump to New York stages, including Denzel Washington, George Clooney, and Bob Odenkirk.
Speaking of Denzel Washington, if you're a red carpet photographer, make sure you do not touch his arm.
The two-time Oscar winner was in Cannes promoting the film highest to lowest that he starred in and spikely directed.
Washington was making his way up the red carpet when a photographer asked if he could get a picture and actually grabbed Washington's arm.
Washington got in his face and apparently was not in the mood to be touched and said stop it repeatedly.
The photographer made the right decision and stopped, as opposed to messing with the equalizer.
Good decision.
