hospital.

The father of convicted murderer Stephen Avery has died.

Avery's attorney, Kathleen Zellner, announced the news that Alan Avery died on Friday.

Alan Avery appeared in the 2015 Netflix series Making a Murderer, which casts doubt on the process used to convict Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, for the murder of Theresa Hallback.

Stephen Avery's mother, Dolores Avery, died in 2021.

Both Alan and Dolores Avery maintained their son's innocence.

Stephen Avery is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole at Fox Lake Correctional Institution in Wisconsin for the 2005 murder of Teresa Hallback.

Both Republican U.S.

Representative Tom Tiffany in Bellevue and his Democratic challenger, David Crowley in Shawno, got off their tour buses to cheers from supporters over the weekend.

With just over one week to go, both candidates are reinforcing why they believe they're the right candidate to lead Wisconsin.

Both Tiffany and Crowley are focusing the final push on getting people to the polls and winning over undecided voters.

According to the Wisconsin Elections Commission, the 2024 November election had a

out of 73 percent.

However, the 2022 election with the governor's race on the ticket had a turnout of just over 57 percent.

Both candidates have several stops on their bus tour around the state each day the rest of the week.

The governor's seat has been held by Democrat Tony Evers since 2018.

The previous eight years before that it was held by Republican Scott Walker.

The latest Marquette Law School poll that came out at the end of September had David Crowley ahead of Tom Tiffany among likely voters

by three percentage points, one final poll before the election will be released on Wednesday.

Five schools within the Rippon area school district have earned recognition in the U.S.

News and World Reports 2026-2027 best schools rankings.

This marks the fifth year that multiple Rippon schools have received the distinction.

The Rippon schools recognized include Rippon Middle School, Odyssey Academy for Virtual Learning for its middle school and elementary level, Murray Park Elementary School and Rippon High School.

District Superintendent Ron Revard says, quote, the accomplishments of our students and staff

offer another reason for the Ripon community to celebrate their school district.

You can read more about the recognition at the Ripon Area School District website.

The business manager for the Ripon Area School District says the mileage rate for the school district will be going down, but that doesn't mean people will see a break on their property taxes.

Bob Nelson reports for Civic Media News.

Jonah Adams says the rate will be $6.25 per $1,000 of value on a property compared to $6.36 this past year.

The overall school budget will be increasing.

The total tax that we're levying is about $157,000 more than last year.

It's about a 2.15% increase, very small increase.

He says the district's tax rate was already lower than 64% of the state.

On the other hand, because of property reassessments in the city, homeowners will see a likely tax increase as the property tax burden shifts from commercial to residential property owners.

Then it's going to be shifting it from commercial property to homeowners.

Again, it doesn't lead to any more taxes for the school.

The city of Rippon is going to see about a

0.9% increase in tax from the school district.

The Ripon area school district is receiving $362,000 less in general school aid from the state for the current school year.

Much of that deficit was reduced by lowering the amount the district intended to pay down dead.

Wisconsin's Department of Workforce Development says unemployment rates were lower in all 72 counties and all 35 of the state's largest cities in September.

According to the federal labor statistics, jobless rates in the area counties last month were down by a half percentage point or more.

The unemployment rate in Dodge County dropped to 2.3 percent and 2.6 percent in Fond du Lac and Wapaka counties.

Winnebago County's rate was at 2.7 percent and it was 2.8 percent in Green Lake and Washera counties.

Wappan Fire Chief BJ Daman picked up one of the top honors at the Wisconsin State Fire Inspectors Association's Fire and Professionals Conference last week.

He previously won the Association's Public Educator of the Year Award in 2018.

Also during the awards banquet, Abel Kumar of the Wappan Fire Department received the Public Educator of the Year Award, although the award was for 2020

5 because Abel couldn't attend last year.

J. F. Herne of Fond du Lac won the Fire Prevention Supporter of the Year award.

The conference banquet was held at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

The Wisconsin State Fire Inspectors Association fosters the highest standards of fire prevention in the state of Wisconsin through progressive fire inspections and fire and life safety education.

Even with running back Josh Jacobs making his presence known back on the football field, the Packers weren't able to tame the Lions yesterday in Detroit.

Plagued by penalties, the pack lost 20 to 17.

It'll be a quick turnaround as the team takes on the Carolina Panthers Thursday night at Lambeau.

Democratic candidate for Governor David Crowley kicked off his Let's Get to Work Wisconsin tour in Green Bay over the weekend.

Crowley's first stop through a packed house at the Brown County Democratic Party headquarters.

Close to 100 people crowded in to hear from Crowley, along with speakers from the rest of the Democratic ticket, including Governor Tony Evers, incumbent candidate for Attorney General Josh Call and others.

A key message to Wisconsin Democrats is to vote down the ticket on November 3rd.

Crowley's tour continued on to Appleton and Sheboygan San...

On Sunday, there were plan stops in Kiwani, Chano, and Marinette.

Sot County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man last Saturday night for allegedly starting a fire in the woods near Devil's Lake State Park.

Firefighters say they found a large fire spreading through the woods in an area inaccessible by traditional fire trucks.

The property is in the township of Sumter.

Fire crews from multiple agencies battled the blaze for more than an hour and a half with specialized ATVs and other equipment to bring it under control.

Authorities found and arrested the suspect shortly after arriving at the scene.

The motive behind the fire is still under investigation.

The Madison Common Council has voted to terminate interim independent police monitor Arameek Glass.

The move comes following weeks of controversy over her job performance outlined in an employment review from the city attorney's office.

That review states Glass had made no meaningful progress in searching for a permanent monitor after nearly 10 months with no approved job description, posting, or interviews.

It also cited a missed July 17 budget deadline, strained relationships with Madison police, and an open

an outside investigation into complaints about Glass' own conduct.

Wisconsin's measles outbreak has topped 300.

Health officials reported 43 new cases over the last 10 days, bringing the total to 310 cases.

Most cases are in southwestern Wisconsin, with Lafayette County reporting 103 confirmed or probable infections.

Northern Wisconsin has reported 34 confirmed cases across Chippewa and Marathon counties.

Health officials warn fewer reported cases do not necessarily mean the outbreak is slowing,

and actual infections could be higher.

With the opening of the gun deer hunt less than a month away, 55 of Wisconsin's 72 counties now have chronic wasting disease, according to the DNR.

Wildlife officials say a three-year-old buck on a deer farm in Taylor County is among the most recent detections of the disease.

That farm will remain in quarantine while government veterinary staff work to identify and control the disease outbreak.

If you're a jerky lover in Wisconsin, you might want to check your pantry.

1,000 pounds of beef jerky is being recalled across Wisconsin and six other Midwest states.

The USDA says the products were produced without federal inspection.

Health officials warn that uninspected meat products can pose risks, including bacterial contamination and undisclosed allergens.

The recall affects three varieties of two-ounce sealed bags.

Imperial Fuego Beef Jerky, Imperial Original Beef Jerky, and Imperial Limone Beef Jerky.

If you have any of these products, health officials say you shouldn't eat it, but throw it away or return it to the place where you bought it.

A new $705 million casino is officially open in southern Wisconsin.

Ho-Chunk Gaming Beloit welcomed its first guests Friday.

The casino features 1,300 slot machines and 33 table games, including Blackjack, Poker, and Roulette, plus several restaurants and lounges.

Tribal leaders say the casino represents a major investment expected to support local employment and economic development.

And that's your state news update.
