The State's Department of Natural Resources recently announced Diane Persbacher and Rory Williams as the 2026 State Natural Areas Volunteer of the Year for their dedication to Natural Areas Stewardship at Oshkosh Larson Trail Prairie State Natural Area.

The two have volunteered since 2018 and after only one year became Volunteer Stewards at Oshkosh Larson Trail Prairie State Natural Area.

Much of the volunteer effort that's taken place there wouldn't have been possible without their leadership and initiative.

Since they became stewards, nearly 1,500 volunteer hours have been dedicated to the site.

The two encourage people to join a volunteer group at a state natural area.

Ethan was found dead in a snow bank at a town of Newton home on April 20th of that year.

That included, according to the complaint, Ethan being required to carry a log for two hours around a path in the backyard of their home.

In a statement released Friday, the Evers administration said the Trump administration, without notice, made the decision to terminate millions of dollars in funding to prevent fraud and implement improvements in Wisconsin and other state's unemployment insurance systems.

Weekends don't get much better in Wisconsin with summer-like temperatures at the peak of autumn splendor for much of the state and a decisive Packers win over their longtime rival, Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field.

Top it all off with the Brewers one step closer to the World Series with the win over the daunting Dodgers in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series.

Today's temps won't make it any easier to get back into the work week with another warm sunny day before rains move in over much of the state tonight.

details coming up in weather.

A long-awaited trial begins today in the case of a seven-year-old Manitowoc County boy found dead after allegedly being buried in a snowbank as punishment.

A jury trial is scheduled for Timothy Howschultz, the great uncle and guardian of the boy.

Howschultz is accused of ordering the punishment, which led to 7-year-old Ethan Howschultz's death in April of 2018.

According to the criminal complaint, the boy was being punished for not adequately knowing 13 Bible verses.

The complaint says Howschultz ordered his teenage son Damien to supervise the punishment.

The complaint goes on to say Damien stood on the boy's body and head while he was facedown in a puddle and then buried him in a

about 80 pounds of packed snow without a coat or boots.

Damien Hauschilds pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in June of 2021 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

A judge has since added five more years of supervision after the prison term.

Neither parent was home at the time of Ethan's death.

A security incident at a Wisconsin pumpkin patch over the weekend led to one person being arrested in Kenosha.

According to a statement released by the Jerry Smith pumpkin farm in Kenosha, onsite security

responded quickly and detained the person until law enforcement arrived.

Details regarding what exactly led to the security response Friday night haven't been released by law enforcement.

The Packers came out on top yesterday in a victory made even more sweet because it was against longtime rival Chicago Bears.

But in a moment of true sportsmanship, fans on both sides of this bitter rivalry paused together in a moment of silence, honoring former Bears head coach Mike Ditka.

Ditka, who personified the Bears franchise for many, died Friday at the age of 86.

Perhaps the most notable tribute came in the stands rather than on the sidelines, in the sea of blue number 89 jerseys worn by many Bears fans who made the trip to Green Bay.

And that's your state news update.
