Hot and humid conditions felt both outside and inside at some Milwaukee Public Schools classrooms as the kids head back to class and with only about 25% of classrooms equipped with air conditioning, some say this can make it difficult for kids to focus and stay comfortable throughout the day.
As temperatures climb this first week of school, so are concerns about how students and staff will stay cool inside some MPS buildings.
For retired MPS teacher Carol Plez-Carney, it's a problem she says has lasted for decades.
Kind of inhumane.
and to be in a classroom trying to learn while you're sweating is kind of hard.
Flasky parent G Dan says he's already thinking about how his son will handle the heat inside school buildings this week.
He brings some extra water to
school.
Oh yes, extra water, you know, just make sure he's not dehydrated.
Plez Carney says during her time in the district, teachers often relied on a number of tools to get their students through days like this.
As a former teacher, it's hard to keep them cool and calm.
and they get active, so.
I mean, all you can do is offer him water.
MPS says many of its buildings are decades old and according to the district's long range facilities, master plan air conditioning access varies widely across schools.
Superintendent Brenda Cassellius acknowledges the heat is a long standing issue.
I think I harp on this quite a bit is that our buildings ages about 85 years.
and on average and there's a lot of work to be done in our buildings and so it's going to be hot.
A district spokesperson says there's currently no estimate for what it could cost to install air conditioning district wide and points to funding challenges.
MPS also says facilities teams can run fans overnight to help cool buildings before students arrive while staff follow heat related procedures during extreme temperatures.
For parents, a cool and comfortable environment for their children to learn should be a priority for the school leaders.
It just makes everybody feel.
more comfortable, more relaxed, you know, right temperature, you know, just everything else.

Milwaukee bars the garage and hi-hat lounge are permanently closed and expected to be sold in the next few weeks according to a statement released by the owners on Tuesday The announcement comes after black lash over a no playlist of black rap artists posted at the garages DJ booth when viral online last week Sale discussions began earlier this summer as the owners plan for retirement
They said, but in light of recent events and resulting staffing concerns, the owners decided to move forward with the sale.
Scott Schaefer, the owner of Jack's American Pub and Milwaukee Brothouse, will acquire both establishments in the pending sale.
Current employees will be paid for the next four weeks and also be given the opportunity for employment under the new ownership, the statement said.
Fox six news as Schaefer when the bars might reopen and whether any changes to the buildings would be made He said they plan to reopen once they receive their liquor license, which will be submitted on Thursday of this week They will then make some upgrades and target reopening on October 15th After several months of discussion, we are pleased to announce the pending sale of the garage and hi-hat lounge

Effective immediately, both establishments are closed.
Once the sale is completed and appropriate licenses are in place, the new owners will announce the next steps.
Sale discussions with Schaefer began earlier this summer as we planned for retirement.
Again, but in light of the recent events and resulting staffing concerns, we made the decision to move forward with the sale rather than attempt to continue operating in the interim.
Our current employees will be paid for two weeks of time off and offered an additional two weeks of severance pay.
They will also be provided the opportunity for employment under the new ownership.
While the last week has been challenging, we are very proud of more than two decades of helping create a welcoming and diverse Brady Street community.
We want to again apologize for the hurt this situation has caused as we know it fell short of the values we have tried to uphold for the past 28 years.
We also want to offer our deepest gratitude to our staff, our patrons, and our neighboring businesses for their support over the years.
We're grateful for the chance to pass this business on to someone who cares about Brady Street and this community the way we do.
As we retire, we look forward to seeing these two establishments and the rest of Brady Street thrive for years to come.

Milwaukee bars the garage and hi-hat lounge are permanently closed and expected to be sold in the next few weeks according to a statement released by the owners on Tuesday The announcement comes after black lash over a no playlist of black rap artists posted at the garages DJ booth when viral online last week Sale discussions began earlier this summer as the owners plan for retirement
They said, but in light of recent events and resulting staffing concerns, the owners decided to move forward with the sale.
Scott Schaefer, the owner of Jack's American Pub and Milwaukee Brothouse, will acquire both establishments in the pending sale.
Current employees will be paid for the next four weeks and also be given the opportunity for employment under the new ownership, the statement said.
Fox six news as Schaefer when the bars might reopen and whether any changes to the buildings would be made He said they plan to reopen once they receive their liquor license, which will be submitted on Thursday of this week They will then make some upgrades and target reopening on October 15th After several months of discussion, we are pleased to announce the pending sale of the garage and hi-hat lounge
to Scott Schaefer, owner of Jack's American Pub in Milwaukee Broadhouse and his business partner, DAZ Towers.
Effective immediately, both establishments are closed.
Once the sale is completed and appropriate licenses are in place, the new owners will announce the next steps.
Sale discussions with Schaefer began earlier this summer as we planned for retirement.
Again, but in light of the recent events and resulting staffing concerns, we made the decision to move forward with the sale rather than attempt to continue operating in the interim.
Our current employees will be paid for two weeks of time off and offered an additional two weeks of severance pay.
They will also be provided the opportunity for employment under the new ownership.
While the last week has been challenging, we are very proud of more than two decades of helping create a welcoming and diverse Brady Street community.
We want to again apologize for the hurt this situation has caused as we know it fell short of the values we have tried to uphold for the past 28 years.
We also want to offer our deepest gratitude to our staff, our patrons, and our neighboring businesses for their support over the years.
We're grateful for the chance to pass this business on to someone who cares about Brady Street and this community the way we do.
As we retire, we look forward to seeing these two establishments and the rest of Brady Street thrive for years to come.

Hot and humid conditions felt both outside and inside at some Milwaukee Public Schools classrooms as the kids head back to class and with only about 25% of classrooms equipped with air conditioning, some say this can make it difficult for kids to focus and stay comfortable throughout the day.
As temperatures climb this first week of school, so are concerns about how students and staff will stay cool inside some MPS buildings.
For retired MPS teacher Carol Plez-Carney, it's a problem she says has lasted for decades.
Kind of inhumane.
and to be in a classroom trying to learn while you're sweating is kind of hard.
Flasky parent G. Dank says he's already thinking about how his son will handle the heat inside school buildings this week.
He brings some extra water to school.
Oh yes, extra water, you know, just make sure he's not dehydrated.
Plez Carney says during her time in the district, teachers often relied on a number of tools to get their students through days like this.
As a former teacher, it's hard to keep them cool and calm.
and they get active, so.
I mean, all you can do is offer him water.
MPS says many of its buildings are decades old and according to the district's long range facilities master plan, air conditioning access varies widely across schools.
Superintendent Brenda Cassellius acknowledges the heat is a long standing issue.
I think I harp on this quite a bit is that our buildings ages about 85 years.
and on average and there's a lot of work to be done in our buildings and so it's going to be hot.
A district spokesperson says there's currently no estimate for what it could cost to install air conditioning district wide and points to funding challenges.
MPS also says facilities teams can run fans overnight to help cool buildings before students arrive while staff follow heat related procedures during extreme temperatures.
For parents, a cool and comfortable environment for their children to learn should be a priority for the school leaders.
It just makes everybody feel.
more comfortable, more relaxed, you know, right temperature, you know, just everything else.

The Milwaukee bars, the garage and hi hat permanently closed to be sold.

Milwaukee bars the garage and hi-hat lounge are permanently closed and expected to be sold in the next few weeks according to a statement released by the owners on Tuesday The announcement comes after black lash over a no playlist of black rap artists posted at the garages DJ booth when viral online last week Sale discussions began earlier this summer as the owners plan for retirement
They said, but in light of recent events and resulting staffing concerns, the owners decided to move forward with the sale.
Scott Schaefer, the owner of Jack's American Pub and Milwaukee Brothouse, will acquire both establishments in the pending sale.
Current employees will be paid for the next four weeks and also be given the opportunity for employment under the new ownership the statement said.
Fox six news as Schaefer when the bars might reopen and whether any changes to the buildings would be made He said they plan to reopen once they receive their liquor license, which will be submitted on Thursday of this week They will then make some upgrades and target reopening on October 15th After several months of discussion, we are pleased to announce the pending sale of the garage and hi-hat lounge
To Scott Schaefer, owner of Jack's American Pub in Milwaukee Broadhouse and his business partner, DAZ Towers.
Effective immediately, both establishments are closed.
Once the sale is completed and appropriate licenses are in place, the new owners will announce the next steps.
Sale discussions with Schaefer began earlier this summer as we planned for retirement.
Again, but in light of the recent events and resulting staffing concerns, we made the decision to move forward with the sale rather than attempt to continue operating in the interim.
Our current employees will be paid for two weeks of time off and offered an additional two weeks of severance pay.
They will also be provided the opportunity for employment under the new ownership.
While the last week has been challenging, we are very proud of more than two decades of helping create a welcoming and diverse Brady Street community.
We want to again apologize for the hurt this situation has caused as we know it fell short of the values we have tried to uphold for the past 28 years.
We also want to offer our deepest gratitude to our staff, our patrons, and our neighboring businesses for their support over the years.
We're grateful for the chance to pass this business on to someone who cares about Brady Street and this community the way we do.
As we retire, we look forward to seeing these two establishments and the rest of Brady Street thrive for years to come.
