That was a great story, right?
My mom and dad just go to Riverside University.
That was kind of scary.
That was real scary.
Hiding in the dark, talking like that?
Hiding in the dark?
What do you know with hiding in the dark, talking like that?
Well, you're trying to scare someone.
No, I'm not.
I wouldn't try to scare them.
Oh, you don't like to scare people?
Get up.
She always says she should get a check for me.
I knew you had to do it a lot, you know, cause normally, you know, we try to do it at him, but I'm like, if she going there, I gotta let it go.
You know what I'm saying?
We started it.
So it was like, let's go.
I couldn't get my, you know, but I did.
Okay.
Anyway, you're going to learn today, but no, uh, on a real serious situation here, uh, Madison police department.
officer fired three shots at point blank range into a man who the officers and fellow officers were trying to take into custody in the middle of the street Wednesday afternoon as several witnesses looked on.
Right.
So we're going to play that clip and kind of bring you up to speed if you haven't heard about it.
I mean, it's dominating social media.
Yeah.
People are having their opinions.
A lot of protests are going on up in Madison.
And I just want to make sure that everybody is up to speed and going to play this clip from WISN 12 news.
Producer Xavier is getting that ready.
He'll let me know when it's up and ready to roll.
So if you are watching us on Facebook live or you're on our YouTube page all at one on one seven and truth, you'll be able to follow along where you may have already saw some of the many videos that are circulating around.
that show even more of the situation and unedited as a matter of fact.
So we are ready to play this clip about the Madison shooting of a man in Madison.
Police posted online.
There was a call for a person stealing bikes and checking doors on vehicles.
Now that statement says officers spotted the man you see in that video.
They say he rode off on a bike before they caught up with him at the side of the shooting.
One witness says officers grabbed or tackled the man off the bike and that witness started recording.
Just 12 seconds after this video starts.
The man is tased before an officer shoots him point blank.
Michael Dubek was holding the camera.
Yeah, it was no more than 10 feet away, 5, 10 feet away.
And it happened, as they say, it happened so fast that...
I didn't really have time to react.
It seemed like that they had got him on the ground and then that split second later, three shots to his head.
So it was so surprising, I think, to everybody watching that.
What
cannot be seen from Dubek's perspective is a knife police noted in their public statement online, writing, during the struggle, the man pulled out a fixed blade knife and injured an officer before the shots.
The officer on the far right alerts fellow officers to a knife.
That's when another officer deploys a taser and wrestling the man to the ground.
One officer stomps the man's leg before the officer who called out the knife fires three shots.
The officer who deployed the taser instantly covers her mouth.
11 seconds after the final shot, a different officer tosses a knife to the side and police shared this image of a knife in their
The shooting, prompting protest, and questions over the officer's use of deadly force.
Madison Police Chief, John Patterson.
I caution everyone, this is one perspective.
It is not a full overview of everything that was visible from different angles, certainly visible from the officers.
And again, it involves a fixed blade knife that I think we're fortunate didn't cause more damage.
And
Michael Dubek's video, one of several circulating online tonight, but it is also one of the clearest and it could be crucial considering Madison patrol officers do not wear body cameras.
and body cameras long debated in the city of Madison in 2024.
The department launched a body camera pilot program.
It lasted 90 days.
The hurdle for the city has been the cost of the cameras themselves as well as the storage for the video.
Last year, the Common Council voted down a budget amendment to fund a broad body camera program.
Chief Patterson is pushing for body cameras in the 2027 budget cycle.
Deanna
Derek, let's go back to the officer who fired that fatal shot.
What do we know about him?
Well, Chief Patterson did not.
identify that officer by name, only saying he's a veteran officer.
That officer, along with the three other officers who were trying to take the man into custody, are all on administrative leave, which is a standard practice in deadly use of force incidents.
You got an officer.
Yeah was allegedly injured with the knife Yeah, you might not want to have a weapon that I don't think that the enforcement is designed to Match your energy on what type of weapon you have if you come running at them with a bat
The way they're probably going to respond is, yeah, it's deadly force, imminent danger.
And let alone, unfortunately, if you've injured one of the officers with such knife, and I'm sure there are going to be people to say that he wasn't struggling, I saw struggling.
Oh, there was struggling.
I'm not saying that there was.
Yeah.

We're going
Yeah.
No, I'm just saying all the majority of the protesters that I'm seeing.
Uh, and I don't know if Xavier, you've seen any of the protesters, but it appears to be led by a lot of black people.
I see some white people that are protesting with them, which is what led me to think that he might have been a brother
So, uh, but yeah, that's why, uh, all of the people I've seen, you know, screaming and shouting and all of that on the different protests and they went around this table.
It was a white people sitting around this.
Like we were having an outside dinner, a fine dining type dinner.
Like they had white tablecloths and all of that.
And they kind of like surrounded them and we're saying, well, what are you doing in this, that, and the other?
So that's what kind of brought me to my
Well, we will find out for sure.
Let's get to Israel.
Then we're coming to Mr. Lee.
Then we're coming to Al M.K.E.
Thank you for being patient on our True Talk text line.
Great morning, Israel.
Love you.
Appreciate you.
You hear the conversation and I guess you've had a shooting experience yourself.
What's your truth, Israel?
I'm actually relating to this situation, like not even to my situation.
Okay.
Okay.
I'm about to come at you on a whole other level right now.
All right.
So remember pre 2020 all the police brutality we saw, right?
How that influenced today's like, you know, youth who are now like, you know, adolescent and everything, you know, they're kind of rambunctious on edge and not backing down.
They're defensive and everything.
They're traumatized.
You know, they protest.
Do you see this stuff happening when cops pull people over?
They protest, like pretty much protest instead of complying and everything.
Cops are frustrated because they're on edge.
You never know what somebody's doing.
You've got to follow the law and everything like that.
So, you know, we've got to get over this guilt and trauma and we've got to stop inspiring fear so that way people don't have mental breakdowns, but a bunch of cops come at you like, hey, what are you doing?
right or wrong because that guy in Madison I can probably tell you that he probably did well he's probably he probably was high he probably did have some mental health issues but at the same time we got all this emotion going on right here so he did just enough to argue justification for the shooting but at that time the shooting was unnecessary because you saw even his partner was unhappy with the results of them tazing they had him to do
you know things happen like you know you you know you got progressors get trained to take bums you gotta put your body on the line these cops do can't can't be so delicate by the same time they shouldn't have to take abuse nobody should have to take abuse okay that's
and you know
That's pretty much what I had to say about it.
Get to the point where all the stuff's getting sensationalized.
And it's too close to home for me, where everybody be so stagnant and complacent and frustrating, where everybody just keep going out here holding signs and everything.
Instead of saying, OK, honestly, I could have chilled out.
Honestly, people could have followed protocol.
Honestly, people getting carried away.
Honestly, that was unnecessary.
Leave it at that.
Stop all this emotion and drama right now, because that's too close to home right now for me.
Same to you, big brother, mighty black of you.
You and Bailey, I appreciate you all taking my call.
All right.
So I understand it really quick with Israel saying it's like, you know, all that things that provoke the trauma.
My question was, I didn't see anything.
I don't really look at the YouTube and such like that unless and it comes across when I open my phone.
But my thing was when I got in my vehicle and I heard the situation of the guy and he was recording and he mentioned, okay, there was a tape.
Then there's this shot by the officer, another officer, and then
They're saying that there's a knife or you can hear the woman saying knife.
So what is this, the protocol?
I mean, I thought that the use of a taser and what I've learned and what I know of officers that they will, majority of the time, if one uses a taser, another will also draw their taser if needed to use it.
I didn't know.
It goes from taser to gun, and then confirming that, or what another officer is saying.
I'm just a little, that's my question, and just to give a vote, a little understanding.
All right, thank you.
The truth is the protocol is if you're black, you're dead.
How about that?
Because we
seeing white people pull our AI-15 butcher knives.
and jump on them and they were white as cocaine and they went the extra mile.
But let's go a little deeper.
Black man and Grand Rapids Michigan hand cup behind his back three bullets in the head and the dog chewed them in his neck.
Okay, they will find that guilty.
Boy in the back of the car knocking, shot in the head in the back of the squad car handcuffs, not guilty.
And now we have this going on.
And let's not forget the man in Washington, DC, black man slapping his car woke up to bullets.
If you're black, you're guilty.
If you're white, then they have a protocol, because you know, with white people, they come with attorneys.
So we got to stop saying, well, police officers go through so much.
Well, if you don't want to be here, don't do the job.
But remember, anything that's black is negative.
And these police officers and you can do your research as well.
If you're black, they are taught to get rid of the problem.
And they are trained.
They should go a little harder on you if you're black or Latino.
So we should stop sitting here acting like, oh, they go through so much.
We know you got to hide your suicide rate.
We know you're doped up on coke.
And we know a lot of you white police officers was raised with fail health from your mama and daddy to look at black people as hard to practice.
So we don't got to play stupid.
Don't we find it out?
All the people that's getting shot in the head is black.
Why they won't shoot Savannah Davenport in her mouth?
Fantastic.
Why they won't shoot Jim John Jones, Shababowski, Buproski, with an AI-15 and put the dog on a man's shoulder and his foot in his back?
Why is it they want to put it on Sam, you know, Sam Shishoski and put 100 bullets into his car?
You know why?
Because they protect their white if you're black We're gonna put so much lead up and you you can be the person to sign the number two pencil when you fill out that paper on the death report We're not stupid.
Y'all have yourself a good day.
Happy first day.
Bye bye.
So, you know, it's, it's, this is why, in my opinion, that, that, you know, we've always wanted to, and that's why I say, what's your truth?
Right.
Because to hear the different perspectives.
Yes.
And you have to, you know, pay attention to them.
And that's why when I say, you know, what's your truth?
What's the solution to something?
Every little bit.
It helps like somebody may say something, man, I mean, that's really off the mark.
But maybe this part of what they said, that's something we can think about that may be able to help get us to where we need to get.
And we're able to kind of like take all of the different things.
And, and I think in the end, the end game for me is to make sure that people who are listening, black, white, whatever, uh, think you have to really think like, right.
I didn't think about it from that perspective.
And if we can, we can end up becoming better and making the kind of changes that are necessary in our community and and with some of our people who are, you know what I'm saying?
On a wild side, we're going to be in a better place.
Like if we practice seven principles of Kwanzaa as black people.
We our community would be in a much better place.
Take care of some bills, Bailey.
I know you may have some things over there on the True Tuck text line.
Call in True Nation.
We want to hear from you.
We're also going to be looking at our YouTube page.
Find out what y'all saying over there.

The truth, of course, we're broadcasting live from the American Family Insurance Studio in the heart of downtown at the Avenue.
Talking about this Madison situation, I wanna, I gotta try to find some of those protests that were online, even if we can't play the audio, because they letting them have it, but it was one in particular where they were up in Madison.
And they were around these white people that were surrounded.
And I guess it may have been one or two black people and they were like kind of calling them out like, yeah, y'all sitting there.
But it and the white people sitting at the table look unbothered, even though it looked like 50 or more people were in that protest.
So, you know, it may have been a hundred or more or whatever.
But
So, um, I'm like, if that was, um, a situation like it.
Hmm.
So whoever it was, they, they lost their life.
And yeah, to a lot of people feeling that it was unjustified.
I'm hearing from, uh, former law enforcement was like, uh, it was the way that these officers.
Handled that situation said great morning blow Regarding the police shooting in Madison It is my opinion that this young person would still be alive if proper arrest techniques had been used by the four Not one but four officers said they looked like they were keystone cops
Oh, wow.
And it did.
Like, what would we do?
How do we handle this?
And yeah.
Well,
Okay.
And, and tell me, you know, if you're kind of seeing, and I don't know exactly which clip, but Xavier, our producer, you can start that clip to playing.
So if you're watching us on again, YouTube or Facebook live, again, when I see the protest, so it's hundreds.
So again, I'm.
I'm saying that it was like at least 50.
I knew it was a lot Okay, it was a lot, but
It's like a couple hundred.
I'm gonna let you read that.
But yeah, 833-212-1017.
That is the number.
If you want to share your truth, you know, what's your feeling on this situation?
Is it the same old thing?
You know what I'm saying?
The usual storyline.
What did you see?
You saw the video clip.
What did you see?
Did you see where they use too much force?
They didn't have to do it.
Did you see a man that was struggling and a man that did have a knife and may have injured an officer like they're saying?
Like Madison law enforcement is saying that no, he injured an officer and it eventually ended up being that same officer that was injured by the knife and you do see a knife thrown out, you know,
like they finally got it from the man.
And right after that, that same man that say he got a knife, he got a knife injured by the knife shot him in the head.
I believe it's three headshots.
Mm hmm.
Miss Sassy said.
Then police are so hype up on Red Bull coffee and other stimulants and supercharged, just ready to shoot off the firearms.
No, maybe some are, you know, I mean, if all you can drink all day is coffee, I guess you would be hype, right?
or Red Bull.
And then this other one.
Let me review this before we talk about this.
Go ahead.
Okay.
833-212-1017.
We want to get your take on this.
You're listening to Truth in the Morning.
And, you know, unfortunately, we are not unfamiliar with these type of situations.
But the reality and then with them not having body cams that that really doesn't help the narrative for their law enforcement.
And for those who have different clips that show different angles of the shooting, you know, it's telling a story that has people kind of confused like I saw a killing.
Okay.
Let me give you this when you're ready.
Yep Okay, this is Courtney off our truth talk text line a 3 3 2 1 2 10 17 if you want to get in on this conversation Courtney said
that as a white woman, here is my truth.
I said this at Rodney King.
I said this at George Floyd.
I have said this multiple times in other scenarios where black people have been shot or killed by cops for absolutely no reason.
It would not happen to me.
I could throw a pot of boiling water on a cop and not get shot because I'm white.
I could be resisting arrest.
Maybe I'd get some bruises, but I would not be shot.
It's pure and simple.
My privilege gives me the benefit of the doubt, which saves my life.
And that is disgusting.
You know what?
Those are facts.
That's why you know people always like oh you just throwing in the black factor But no Usually the black person doesn't with did we not show a video?
I think I mean there's been multiple videos that we've shown on this show
right
Right?
it a
don't know what that white guy had on him that the video we showed you all the other day And maybe we can pull that out again somewhere.
I don't know if we have that still Xavier, but You know They don't do that black people don't have that privilege.
They don't have that benefit if you're a person of color Mm-hmm.
It isn't your best interest To be as calm as possible.
Yep when being approached by a police officer
Because if you're not you could end up not going you could end up not going home that part because that's the common that is the common thing Black person just like this brother didn't get a chance to go home You know and I'm not saying he was right for having a knife on him or any of the things or even how he reacted I am not but especially if you go out to these protests and whatever
Have your right mind on you.
Mm-hmm.
Don't be carrying no weapons if you black don't care no weapon I know we got concealed carrying all the things But they wasn't asking him if he had concealed carry nope I mean they didn't ask him nothing.
It was just like attack mm-hmm, you know
Of course, we don't know the preamble when they were trying to talk to him, you know in the come up,
we'll be black.

page and all
It's
I'm not gonna do
yeah come
yeah
when you
my
you.
It's my
page.
And I'm
like just
That's it.
But we got so
But I got some over here on the two talk text line as we wrap up today's show.
Ray said it seems like police were just too scary.
And this is why they shot the man that.
Men that many that many times, even when they say had him under control, unlike the Incredible Hulk white white man last week.
Yeah, the white guy,
I just wanted to comment on like Bailey's statement about like people being desensitized growing up as a kid that you know I kind of you know I'm probably one of the first waves of kids that grown up with the internet full access you know seeing the videos because I grew up in kind of like the wild wild west of the internet okay
know the live leak videos and stuff
yeah and you know gore.com and stuff like that yeah
People are definitely desensitized like me.
I just watched the video that the guy sent and you know, literally the guys.
it because it's even gross to
it.
Yeah.
But like me seeing that, I mean, obviously it affected me, but it's like, I don't know, me growing up seeing like cartel videos where they are executing people or something like that.
Or it's like, you know, it's sad to say, but yeah.
Lot of people you wanted to do sensitize people.
Yes, but I will say it does affect me I will say like when I saw it.
I did feel bad.
I wasn't like oh I'm just get some desensitized the gore but To the act of what happened to him.
I definitely you know feel remorse and sorrow for him because those three shots of the head that was completely uncalled for
Yeah.
And it's kind of crazy how we're the only country that really has like these shootings, because like, you know, say like a place like in England, where they have no guns or where they have to be trained on the fight people with knives and stuff like that.
They
don't have these, they don't have these conversations.
I've seen multiple videos where people have knives in these countries and stuff like that
cops managed to take them down without shooting them.
Yeah, because most in in those countries cops don't even most cops don't even care.
I walk around with guns, right?
Yeah, sure.
That's true.
Most most cops don't have guns and they were talking about when they were doing the teen takeover things.
I noted in the story it was happening in the the predominantly African-American area over in England.
And you know what?
They were like, we don't have guns.
Yeah, our police officers do not have guns.
Right.
Yeah, they do have armed officers, but they have to pronounce that they're armed officers.
And like those are only special units that come in right like the standard cop.
You're Billy Club.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But it is crazy and even just to show the deterioration in my opinion of people and especially like in our community, I can speak on them because I see it daily.
Yes.
I come up where if somebody started fighting, you went the other damn way.
Yeah.
If you heard gunshots, you went the other way.
We got some generations of people that they run to the fight.
Right.
They watch the beating and the abuse and and and seeing the person.
Oh, they busted his head open
and
Like, yeah, keep on kicking them and hitting them and beating them with a bat or a pole.
Like, just all of this or the person is dead.
Hey, they just shot somebody.
You gonna run down to the scene.
Yeah, where they said they just shot somebody.
Yeah law enforcement hasn't clear cleared the scene Yeah, most of the time the ambulance won't even go in yeah until law enforcement comes and Secures the scene.
Yeah, so they can go in there sit half a block down that part
We're not
Of course, followed up by the lunch break with Ray nitty and maybe Shannon from noon to two.
