Well, hey, to each their own, I had an exciting weekend of, like many folks, of watching the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament as we have our little pool here at Civic Media and saw many of my hopes go up in flames.
Well, my national champion, Michigan State, is still in it.
Of course, the Wisconsin Badgers bow it out.
In round two, Marquette bowed out in round one.
Steal some very exciting basketball.
Maryland won last night at the buzzer to get into the sweet 16.
It was John Calipari, now at Arkansas as a 10 seed, beating number two, Rick Petino, St.
John's as well.
So it is the Razorbacks into the sweet 16.
Lots of people, little frustration, but all.
Number one seeds are still in in the round of 16 coming up next weekend We're gonna get into basketball a little bit later in the show There's also news of the day as well not the least of which the vice president of the United States JD Vance over the weekend Essentially saying that he's ready to go at it with our ally Denmark Denmark I mean who can be more it's one of the happiest places in the world to live the longtime ally Denmark JD Vance
ready to start knocking heads together figuratively, at least putting sanctions on Denmark all over Greenland.
We'll get to that.
And of course, we continue to have a constitutional crisis in the Trump administration still trying to get around the judicial branch by insisting they have the right to deport people without due process to these camps, these prisons in El Salvador, the Trump administration this morning now.
Asking not specifically on that case, but others basically wants to go now directly to the Supreme Court and say are you good to allow these lower judges to in their words impede us?
So that could be Quite the quite the week ahead here will be with you all week of course and of course now number two We have what's worse today involving sore backs and other places that get sore and also I'm very very excited about this summers

But first, this is fantastic.
And unlike I say, I know there is more serious downbeat news that we'll talk about a little bit later here in the show.
But I want to start off with something that absolutely made me feel better after the Wisconsin Badger basketball loss and the NCAA tournament.
Made me feel better about the world, can bring people together.
And if you are in the Madison area or can be tonight around 6 30.
Get yourself down to the Bon Arena on campus next to the Cole Center and welcome in your 2025 national champions, the Wisconsin Badger women's hockey team, who have now won their eighth, eighth national championship under the great direction of head coach Mark Johnson.
It was, I got to see this.
It was on ESPNU, the championship game.
I saw the middle of period two, period three, they went to overtime and Wisconsin won it in overtime four to three.
At different points of my life, follow men's hockey pretty closely, follow women's hockey somewhat, UW.
This was, I'm not a big NHL guy, but I'll watch it during the playoffs.
This game yesterday between Wisconsin and Ohio State,
was one of the best hockey games I have ever seen.
And to set it up for you, we're gonna play several clips here.
I'm gonna take you through how this happened.
The Badgers were down three to two with a minute left to go in the third period, the final period.
And the...
Ohio State team had too many players on the ice.
They got called for too many players the ice that gave Wisconsin a power play So they have one extra skater on the ice and with the minute left Johnson pulls the goalie So now it's five on three or pardon me six on three and And so and our six on four rather part.
I'm getting excited six on four
And with 18, and so the Badgers are shooting down there against the great goalie from Ohio State, by the way.
And they take a time out on a timeout, but stop each a play because they couldn't find the puck or whatever.
And it turns out that one of the Ohio State girls had taken the puck with her glove and stopped it in the crease.
That's that blue part on the ice right in front of the goal from basically could have gone in.
And so that awarded Wisconsin either another minor, which would have given them another person advantage of the ice or a penalty shot.
And Kirsten Sims steps up and takes this and it was the most incredible hockey shot I have ever seen.
And then she gets that and over time, she also gets the game winning shot in instant sudden death over time and Wisconsin wins four to three.
I want to play you a clip to start off with from Mark Johnson the day before.
This is from Saturday.
The Badgers beat one of their arch rivals, Minnesota, by the way.
Shouldn't forget that Layla Edwards, the great player for Wisconsin, she had a hat trick in that game against Minnesota.
Badgers won that fairly easily.
I think 5-3 was that score on Friday to put him into the national championship game.
This is Mark Johnson, who
They cannot put up a statue of Mark Johnson fast enough on the Madison campus, in my opinion.
Here's a guy that won a national championship when he played men's hockey for his dad at Wisconsin.
He won a gold medal for Wisconsin in the miracle on ice at the 84 Olympics.
And then now he's the head coach at the women's team at Wisconsin and has now won eight national championships.
He reminds me a lot of Bo Ryan for men's basketball coach.
Great storyteller.
and puts it in terms that his players can understand.
He's a great fisherman.
And Mark Johnson on Saturday put this down there and explained his coaching theory in terms of fishing.

So I'm walking to my hotel room a couple of days ago and the heat's not working.
It's like, okay, I don't know man.
This is sort of like when I was at St.
Thomas at the hotel over there when my room was 58 degrees the whole time I was there and I'm freezing and End up getting a cold after it and it's like miserable.
So I go into the bathroom and I got wallpaper and all it is is walleyes everywhere and So my favorite trip is when I go to Bemidji and we could eat walleye every day.
Have you ever had walleye for breakfast?
No, ever fly fished?
Yeah, so now I'm looking at my walleye and saying okay I'm gonna go down this river that's got all these walleyes And I got a fly rod right and I got to go fly fishing.
What's the key to fly fishing?
It's like putting touch and feel I got a touch and I got a feel so as that lure goes out there And I'm feeling it and all of a sudden it hits me.
Oh, you know So yeah Touch and feel so if you want to hit your driver a little bit straighter, you know, what's my grip?
Touch feel want to become a better putter We talked about last night distance and direction.
What am I gonna work on?
so and that's you know, it's I know we're talking and supposed to be talking hockey, but You know, it's all it's all in your preparation.
So these kids are prepared.
They've been working since last July Had a remarkable
It goes on from there but
But Mark Johnson talking about touch and feel and being prepared.
A little bit later in that clip, he talks about if you go musky fishing and trying to get a musky in the boat, you know, musky, they can, they can fool you because you can get a musky on the line.
He gets right up by the boat and then it just looks at you and turns its head and snaps.
The line is gone.
And he talks about you got to get the fish in the boat, the musky in the boat.
By the way, well, wherever they play at Bemidji, Minnesota, the Badgers.
Johnson always takes his team into this restaurant up there and have their walleye for breakfast.
Not everybody's thrilled about that.
But the way he explains that, the touch and feel, whether it's a putter, whether it's fly fishing, it's all about being prepared.
And that all came into play yesterday when the Badgers really, really needed it.
And the Badgers are awarded this penalty shot.
And you don't see Johnson going up and down the sidelines looking at his players, you know, who are you?
He just he just stands there.
He's up on the bench.
He's looking at the girls down in the ice and The camera has a great shot.
You can read his lips.
He just says calmly.
He says who wants it who wants it and Kirsten Sims hand went up and he just looks at her and says go get it That's it doesn't doesn't tell her how to shoot it doesn't tell her what to do just says
Go get it.
Do we have time to play the Sims Cup before that?

This is the best hockey shot I have ever seen.
The control that she has on this puck, the ability to fake out the Iowa State goal.
There's 18 seconds left.
All Ohio State has to do is hold off this penalty shot and their national champions.
But Kristen, Kirsten Sims raises her hand and says, I want it.

Celebrating the Wisconsin Women Badgers National Championship on the Civic Media Ready
the truth wherever it they lead and having fun doing it.
Welcome back to the Son of all show and the Civic Media ready that we're glad to have you along with us on a Monday the 24th of March, 2024.
Zommer's on the board talking about this incredible hockey game last night, yesterday afternoon.
Actually, the Wisconsin Badgers taking on the Ohio State Buckeyes on the women's side in the national championship game.
The Badgers were down three to two.
And one of the women on the Ohio State team covered up the puck in the crease.
The crease is right in front of the net, that blue area.
And again, I'm not sure if it was Johnson or an assistant coach.
Someone knew the rules so well.
Of course, without looking it up, they just, they knew the rules that they said, wait a minute, let's review this.
I'm going to read you this rule.
This on the coach's challenge.
This is rule.
Whatever be sub for a defending player Except for the goalkeeper falling on the puck Holding the puck or gathering the puck into the body or hands when the puck is within the goal crease the non offending teams coach Shall have the option of a penalty shot or an optional minor
So the Badgers already had a power play and There's 18 seconds left in the game right now Ohio stayed up three to two John's nest decides you want one extra girl in the ice Or do you want to take a penalty shot?
He says I'm taking a penalty shot on the review He's standing at the bench looks out over the girls in the ice says who wants it who wants it
And just as he's saying it the second time, Kirsten Sims' hand goes up.
And he just looks at her and he says, go get it.
That's it.
And here now is the call on ESPN Kirsten Sims on the penalty shot.
Here is Sims moving in on Tilly to try to tie the championship game.
An absolutely incredible shot.
Go look it up if you can.
I just, Mike Clemens posted this, a great sports reporter on his Twitter saying, I watched it over and over again, just incredible.
Sims takes it down.
And for lack of a better term to put it in basketball term, she's dribbling the puck going back and forth with her stick with the puck on the ice.
And she looks like she's going to the left, her left.
And so the goalie goes to her right.
to stop it.
And Sims with the back of her stick pulls it to the right at the last second, her right, and scoots it in right behind the goalie because the goalie had already committed.
The
patience there is
impressive.
And it was the you're right.
It was patience because she could not have waited an additional half a second more or she would have missed the shot.
Absolutely incredible.
They they they hold the 17 seconds or whatever it was, 18 seconds.
They hold ends up on a three three tie after regulation goes to sudden death overtime.
Ohio State did get a couple of shots off early on.
The Badgers take it down once again.
And here's the call this time on ESPN.
First of all, here is Kirsten Sims winning it in
overtime.
Absolutely incredible shot once again and I don't have it in front of me.
I'll get it for you.
One of the other Badgers had fired it and ricocheted with stop by the gold tender for Ohio State bounced off.
Sims gets it with the back of her stick and flips it in backhanded into the net to win it for the Badgers in overtime.
The great Wisconsin Broadcasting Association Hall of Fame announcer Paul Braun
for who sold for very many years called men's hockey in the Madison area on the Badger network.
He is now calling games on 1070 AM in the game in Madison and he was there calling it for them for this national championship.
Here is that same call the win by Sims in overtime by the great Paul Braun.
And it's deflected along the boards on the near side with it is Ava Murphy on the lead to Eden.
Eden cuts in over the line, moving to the net, shot!
Big rebound!

This place absolutely
exploded.
The great Paul Braun calling it on 1070 the game in Madison on the Wisconsin Women's Badger Hockey Network just gives me chills to hear Paul Braun shot the goal.
There it is.
I mean, it was absolutely incredible.

in what coach Mark Johnson had to say on that penalty shot, on the penalty shot that
Sims took.
Head coach Mark Johnson talked about the pressure on Kirsten Sims to score that penalty shot with just 18 seconds left to send it into overtime.
I wanted to see who wanted to step up and own it, who felt comfortable in this setting because you can't have one ounce of negativity in your mind as you pick the puck up.
It's got to be all positive because if you think about what's going on, you're going to miss your putt and you're going to miss the shot.
There it is once again gonna miss the puck miss the shot wanted to see who who who wanted it Had to have a little touch and feel to go back to the earlier cut from Johnson one Just put the put the lure out there and see which one of those girls gonna grab it and be assured We have time for the Sims cup before the break sabers or we'll come back or we'll come back and hear from Kirsten Sims who has interviewed after that game on what it was like
to get the not just the the penalty shot to tie it up and send it into OT but also also to win it for the Wisconsin Badgers.
Wisconsin as a school now has more national championships in hockey men's and women's combined than any other college in the United States of America.
Wisconsin has solidified itself as indeed
a hockey school.
Congratulations to Coach Mark Johnson on the women's program.
All of the women Badgers who now have eight, count them, eight national championships on the women's side alone.
An absolutely truly remarkable feat for Coach Johnson and the Badgers.

The University of Wisconsin marching band, lots of that song over the weekend, especially up in the Twin Cities, home of the Golden Gophers, the Badger, the women Badger ice hockey team dispatched of the Golden Gophers on their home ice on Friday.
Hat trick by Laila Edwards, by the way, for the Badgers, went a long way in doing that.
and then played for the national championship against Ohio State yesterday afternoon.
The Badgers tied it up with 18.9 seconds left to make it 3-3 on a great shot by Kirsten Sims, a penalty shot.
And then in overtime, it was Sims once again with the back of her stick, putting the puck in the net.
Wisconsin wins 4-3 in overtime.
The Lady Badgers now have won eight.
eight national championships under the direction of head coach Mark Johnson.

Kirsten Sims, Kirsten you are a national championship.
What are you feeling right now?
I
mean it hasn't sunk in yet, it doesn't feel real.
This team went to bat all game and we fought through a ton of adversity and to come out on top is just exactly what we wanted.
When coach Mark Johnston goes on the bench and says who wants it, you put your hand up.
What was going through your mind when you said I want it?
I mean, it kind of was everybody on the bench.
It's like, Sims, you're taking it.
And I was like, you know what?
Fine, I'll do it.
But I was so nervous.
And I just couldn't think while I was going.
Just had to try to be confident with it.
But it worked out.
The overtime winning goal, you had to put yourself a little bit out of position to follow through and score.
How did you shoot that puck so out of position?
I'm gonna
be honest, I have no idea.
I actually just like ended up on my stick where I was and I was like, you know what?
Wherever I throw it, if it goes in, it goes in and then, you know, it went in the net.
So,
here we are.
What can you say and what are you most proud of of your Wisconsin Badgers team?
The all year we have been unbelievable all year top to bottom.
This team has had so much depth.
There's so much talent everywhere and to just be able to come out on top and prove it time and time again and then to really prove it in a game like this.
And this is a huge adverse game that we had to go through and to be able to still come out on top just shows how incredible of a group this is.
And I couldn't be happy for enough for us.

Uh on on her game winning not just at the tying goal, but also then ultimately the game winner How do you like that zomers when when she was asked how did you do that?
She was I don't know it just ended up on my stick and I threw it in
You're absolutely right and it goes back to that first cut we played of coach Johnson and sure he was talking about fishing a little bit about golfing but think about the incredible coaching job that he and his team have done this year and the relationship he has with his players and the incredible amount of preparation that those women have put in because
And this is something I learned in my days at, it'll be a Plathville Broadcasting for the Pioneer basketball team and being around Bo Ryan when he was the head coach there for three years, three and a half while I was there.
Is that he would talk about this all the time about attention to detail.
I've talked about this on the show before.
He always wanted the same bus driver.
Whenever we went to certain places, we would always stop at the same restaurants.
When we'd have away games.
He'd always want to stay in the same hotel.
I asked him one time, I sat on an interview, I said, why are we always doing the same thing like this?
And he said, well, Todd, it's like this.
These guys as student athletes and particularly then in the 90s and particularly at division three, they really are student athletes.
No payment at that time.
He said, these guys have so much.
The guys in the basketball team, then these guys were like engineers, some of them.
So they had legit, really hard calculus classes, other things.
He said, these guys have so much to worry about and think about.
If we can take just a little bit of that away from them, so they know where we're going to stay.
They know who they're going to see in the bus.
They know where we're going to eat.
There's a little bit of just a little bit of consistency Then there can focus on the other things that are more important in the preparation for the game And if we do things the same way all the time And he did the exact same thing in practice.
I know coach Johnson does this in hockey You know, they'll they'll get they'll have a situation like that.
They'll say all right Six seconds left or make make the penalty shot that we're done
You don't make it, we're doing laps or whatever.
And so when you get in that real game situation, it's just instinct, it's just instinct, instinctual to do that.
So a huge credit goes to the women on the Badger Hockey team, huge credit goes to the Coach Johnson as well.
Congratulations, eight national championships.
And again, if you're in the Madison area or you want to take a drive, there will be a welcome home celebration, a big rally.
Wisconsin marching band will be there, I'm sure, as a Chancellor Mnuchin.
All the folks there from Wisconsin, the hockey team, of course, the national championship trophy, 6.30 tonight, 6.30 in Madison at Le Bon Arena on campus.
That's where the women play.
It's right next to the Cole Center.
So the doors open at 6.
It first come, first serve in terms of who gets in.
So there's no charge.
Take the kids if you're in the Madison area and
Salute these national championship women for Badger hockey.

to give some analysis of the game that they were covering at the time.

that's the thing that I think people love about Charles Barkley is he isn't going to do

I thought that was fantastic.

Well, it was as we said, an exciting, exciting weekend.
Unfortunately, the bad news for the men's basketball programs at Wisconsin and Marquette, both of them out to Marquette out after during the first game.
And Wisconsin got to the round 32, the second round, but they were shut down by BYU.
The Mormons took him out.
But BYU played their heart out.
Wisconsin was down by 16 at one point and came back.
I mean, it was a great comeback.
And I really thought John Tangi had the ball for the final shot.
It was a fadeaway jumper.
There was some argument, maybe he got fouled.
I don't know.
I'm not going to say that.
It was close enough.
And the ball just didn't go in the basket.
It would have tied it up, sent it to overtime.
Some people say, why didn't you go for the win?
I think that Greg Guard probably just said, take the best shot possible.
But afterwards, Greg Guard said he's been doing this 30-some years between assistant coaching and head coaching and saying this is probably if not the most enjoyable group of guys he's ever had.
And John Tanji, who's done more in one year for Wisconsin than John Tanji?
What a great player, what a great person.
Carter Gilmore afterwards.
talking about what this journey meant to him, basically revealing that he had thought about not even coming out this year, dropping out of the program because of all the transfers coming in, didn't know what his year was like, stuck with it, earned a scholarship, and we know the rest.
Carter Gilmore recovered the ball to give Tanji a shot at the end, by the way.
So...
And there are people out there, you know, calling for guard to be fired at all this because they didn't make the sweet 16 again.
You know, as Trevor Noah says, miss me with that.

I mean, Greg Guard did a fantastic.
I mean, they were picked to finish 12th this year.
12th in the Big 10 by the media.
Finished fifth, half a game out of fourth, I think it was.
Got to the championship game, the Big 10 tournament, and got to the second round.
And again, Wisconsin probably should have been playing in Milwaukee instead of Iowa State.
There were all kinds of people from BYU because it's pretty close, Denver, Provo, Utah.
So, you know, it's just, it literally is how the ball bounces.
But Wisconsin Men's Basketball, a fantastic year once again.
Really exciting.
And we'll see what happens.

Little news over the weekend, vice president of the United States, JD Vance, he ain't picking on Russia.
He ain't picking on North Korea.
He ain't picking on China.

JD Vance thinks the real problem in the world in terms of America are the Danes, are the people of Denmark.
Here's what good old Vancey said over the weekend on one of the news talkers.
Denmark, which controls Greenland, it's not doing its job and it's not being a good ally.
So you have to ask yourself, how are we going to solve that problem, solve our own national security?
If that means that we need to take more territorial interest in Greenland, that is what President Trump is going to do because he doesn't care about what the Europeans scream at us.
He cares about putting the interests of America's citizens first.
Not being a good ally.

Vance thinks that Denmark
is not being a good ally.
Denmark is a member of NATO.
Okay?
We are sworn to protect them.
They're sworn to protect us, help protect us.
They've been an ally in the Gulf War.
They've been an ally in the war on terror.
They've been an ally in terms of energy.
Denmark has a long history.
of being a great ally with the United States of America.
And then Vance saying, well, you know, Trump doesn't care how much the Europeans scream at him.
I thought about screaming.
It's about saying, hey, if you have an alliance with someone, a friendship, it's beyond a friendship.
It's an alliance.
You have a responsibility to be a good partner in that alliance.
You can't just walk away from it because...
Right.
Well, you won't give me part of your country.
That's not being a good player.
What can I mean?
I mean, you know, let's think about this.
That's kind of what Japan did a few years back.
You know, during the World War II, when they went over, they bombed the crap out of Pearl Harbor.
When we have been I mean under this line of thinking by JD Vance apparently now The United States should have just said ah Japan if you really want Hawaii, it's all yours.
We'll be a good a good ally No One country does not go get to go and just take over another country Think about the first Gulf War When Iraq went in and tried to take Kuwait
And there was a National World Alliance that George H.W., the first George W. Bush put together, along with Howard Baker, and got a lot of kudos for putting together an international alliance, including Denmark, by the way.
They said we cannot let that aggression a stand.
Oh, guess who else is just taking a places by storm?

Who said you know what I would really like Ukraine?
Because once upon a time it was part of the old Soviet Union and Ukraine Said no when they got their independence by the way, they had nuclear weapons and they gave those nuclear weapons up because of a promise in writing by the United States and others that said we will help protect you and your sovereignty if you give up your nuclear weapons, so Ukraine gave them up
and now fast forward to three years ago, and Vladimir Putin, unprovoked, attacked Ukraine to take the land.
And now it's getting Trump and Vance to repeat Kremlin talking points and propaganda that somehow they're not the aggressor and in order for this to be a ceasefire and to end, Russia gets part of that land.
Do you see the pattern?
Donald Trump and JD Vance are using the same playbook.
and it's Vladimir Putin.
And it's disgusting.
And it's completely and wholeheartedly un-American.
