Today is a very important day for the US government. As we begin our broadcast, the House of Representatives is holding their election for Speaker of the House. The House cannot legally do business without a speaker, so if they don’t have one by Monday, they will not be able to confirm the 2024 election. From his time working for a congressman, Todd is familiar with the inner workings of these votes, and he helps us understand the chaos. Ultimately, the first vote failed with neither Johnson nor Jeffries securing a majority. Hopefully we don’t have a repeat of the Kevin McCarthy fiasco!

Todd finishes up our first hour with an examination of the Democratic party’s use of language from Senator Brian Schatz. At the end of the day, the party is too focused on using very particular phrases and words. According to Schatz and people like Ben Wikler, regular people get turned off by things like “Latinx” and “Green New Deal.” Todd wholeheartedly agrees.
