Today, we was having a quick discussion.
Well, it was supposed to be quick, but I was talking about dating a high value woman, right?
And somebody said, you know, don't come to a woman's house empty handed.
I agreed.

And then I simply posed the question to my co-host, Shannon.
I was like, well, Shannon, you know, let's say the tables was turned.
and somebody cooked you a meal or so forth.
And I said, would you think to bring some rum punch or something?
And she said, I don't know how to make no rum punch or so forth.
And then I turned into this whole discussion of like, you know, and I never requested her to bring anything.
I was simply asking, would you think to bring?
So that was a question.
Did you hear me say I was making a request for somebody to bring or was I just saying if the tables was turned, would you consider bringing something?

I'm very familiar with African-American Roundtable.
and very familiar with Halier Park.
But for those listeners that don't know or maybe just joining us, please give the folks a description of what it is that you do and what it is you have coming up here.
And then I got some questions for

So, yeah.
Some folks may know me as Zoe's mom.
Zoe Chambers' mom.
I'm going to start there first because I'm her mama.
And she is making ways and moves in the city and beyond.
But also on top of that, I'm a wife.
And also, yeah, the executive director and around type of, which is probably where most of the folks in Milwaukee know me from.
Been with that org since 2014 in some way, shape, or form, doing some community leadership development, campaign work.
And most recently, Hell You Park Neighborhood Association president for folks who do not know.
It's not something that I'm wearing like a new badge, like, oh, I'm doing this thing and this thing.
I have been called and I answered the call after saying no.
for a few years to lead.
But I am so proud to be leading this neighborhood association alongside the amazing residents and elders here.
And I am really looking forward to what we have coming up tomorrow.
Yeah, so tomorrow is a really amazing day for Hillier Park residents and really the community, the city and the state at large.
We are celebrating 50 years of this amazing neighborhood and we're gonna start off at 11 a.m.
with a statue unveiling.
Now, people are probably like,
Statue unveiling that means outside and it's supposed to rain.
So yeah, we're making some rain contingency plans, but I do believe we still want to do the unveiling outside and we'll probably be transitioning down to thrive on to finish that program.
So there'll be that first.
There'll be some snacks provided in between.
And if the rain is maybe like lighter, we'll be having a neighborhood walkthrough where folks can get to know and see what the properties, the original properties look like, but also some of the new
properties
look
There will be a couple residents who will be propped up at some of their homes again if we don't get rained out of that portion, but people can still drive through the neighborhood.
Some people have never driven through Hellier Park and from there at three o'clock we invite folks to a transitional activity.
Again, more snacks because we always have to feed our people.
more snacks and then just The transition activity is really like a dreaming station like what would you vision?
For hell your parking behind and then we go into a program and it will be kicked off by Shelly Conley our poet Laureate along with some other amazing speakers like Ray Hill and others to really Land the plan of the program and then of course
There'll also be food there as well.
So community gathering, celebrating, and really allowing the residents outside of the neighborhood hear about the visions and what has happened thus far in Halyard Park.
Mm-hmm.
It's about creating pathways of stability, ownership, and generational wealth.
That has been the Hilliers and also Beechie Brooks and so many other residents' desire.
The neighborhood reflects what can happen with residents, developers, and community institutions work together around a shared vision and also black, black.
But like that
has been
So this has been something in the making for 50 plus years because we know that it didn't just start during this, you know, 50 years ago.
This vision was something that had been birthed in folks like the how yours folks like beachy brooks.
And it also is an opportunity to really I would say
re-initiate or re-spark the vision around Black home ownership, generational wealth, and also what can really happen in other communities.
We can do this.
It doesn't just have to be hail your part.
It can be across the city.
And so there's so many lessons to learn from these elders.
And I'm, again, just really blessed and privileged to be under their tutelage and to be working alongside of them to hear their hopes, to hear their visions, to hear their dreams.
But also one thing that I think I hear most from residents
is that this should be duplicated.
This blueprint should be duplicated across the city.
Haley and Park is a beautiful, beautiful area in the city of Milwaukee for folks that do not know.
And what I love about it, it is predominantly people that look like us.
That's right.
You mentioned Beachy Brooks.
So we're honoring Beachy Brooks.
The celebration begins with the unveiling of the
BTO Brooks statue, which you all mentioned earlier.
Who was Mr. Brooks and what impact did he have on Haleyard Park and Milwaukee?
He was a real estate broker, a visionary, and a developer.
And he left his mark on Milwaukee by developing this suburban style subdivision.
So they often called for black middle class.
They often called it like a suburb within Milwaukee.
She shares that her father saw possibilities that others couldn't.
He questioned why black families were limited to these depapitated
housing and excluded from owning and living in a nice home in suburbs.
And I remember something else that she told us during a meeting was when her father first was looking for a home, he was thinking about going out to the suburbs.
And then she said, he decided, I don't want to live out there.
I want to live right in Milwaukee.
So he did the hard work, the hard conversations, the hard meetings, the standing alone, challenging people to create this neighborhood alongside the Hell years for Black.
people so we're doing this in honor of his vision in honor of his bravery encouraged to stand up 50 plus years ago to ensure that black people had a place where they could call home right here in the city in an amazing place but also like right down the street from
You know, also downtown, and all of these other amazing places.
But what a joy it is to be sitting right in the belly of a dream and a vision that has taken place.
Okay.
Well, okay.
So we will I get a couple more questions in with you.
I know you super busy.
So preserving community legacy, right?
We know Halyard Park is a highly demanded neighborhood so much.
So a lot of people outside of the community have been trying to purchase properties and so forth.
And I know people been getting letters from people in Mac won offering amazing numbers for their homes.
How do we preserve community
So yeah, that is one of the things that residents are upset about.
You know, all of the folks who are coming in and trying to buy a property and the issue is because of the constant development.
And yes, we love downtown and we want to see it all develop at the cost of what?
at the cost of who at the cost of you know generations because that's what it is and so one thing that we've been curious about is like how can we ensure that other black families can participate in being residents in the city so right now a lot of the elders
We know what happens in elders in this age.
So they have kids who have moved out of the state.
So that means they're likely not to hold on to these houses if they don't have the capacity to manage them, to rent them, or to move in and sell.
If they've moved out of the state and gone and done something different.
And so what ends up happening is these homes go on the market and these.
folks from outside of the community come in and we have some Airbnb.
So one thing that the residents would love to see is no more Airbnb.
And to be totally honest, some of them are like, we don't want any.
And I'm like, that's probably not going to happen.
So what can we do, which is really state level work, to support putting some type of cap?
on this neighborhood, and even Brewer's Hill has talked about, they have quite a few more than we do, but we don't wanna see these, specifically I'll continue to speak for Haleier Park.
We don't wanna see Haleier Park turn into something else.
And if we keep going in the direction that we're going into with this high development near the neighborhood with all the things going on downtown, coming up the street, we're beginning this gentrification process.
And so it's like,
who wants who do you know wants to buy a house like and so
how do
we have those conversations behind closed doors in community with other people but also this goes towards another conversation around like economic mobility.
who has the money, who has the job that can actually afford to live in this neighborhood.
And so there's so many pieces that would really help to stabilize.
And that goes back to all of the work that I do around with the round table.
So many of us in the community are doing to support.
Actually, a platform of policies that will support black people being able to have affordable quality houses.
And I'm not just talking about in these areas where they just dropping houses off right here in Hillier Park
Let's just say that, you know, you can't make the unveiling.
The statue is going to be there on Halyard Street for the years to come.
And so you can't make it pull up another time to see it or pull up to the program in the evening starting at 3 or 4pm when the actual program starts.
We will feed you.
We will be in community.
We'll be right inside thrive on and also
If you are looking for a home, you should come and holla at us because we want to support residents who want to live in this area.
Or if you're like, hey, I can't live in that area, but I do want to support the amazing vision of Hell You Park also hit me up around that.
We do have a neighborhood association.
And yes.
We prefer it to be, of course, the neighbors, but we do look for community partners and folks who are ready to pitch in because we have so many elders.
And for those who may be residents already, and you are not tapped into our Neighborhood Association, you need to join us.
The elders cannot hold this down, and I cannot hold this down without residents who live right there in the neighborhood, who are able to pick up some of the pieces of this work and help us to live out the vision, but also help
to put their hands and feet into the dirt with us to make it happen.

Young people.
So we want to get into a conversation about filters, self-worth and rebuilding our dignity.

Want to talk about the active lawsuit?
This isn't just a cultural complaint anymore.
It's now a formal legal claim.
Claims against Meta, Instagram, Snap, TikTok, YouTube.
are consolidated in federal courts as the social media adolescent addiction, personal injury, products, liability, litigation.
That's a long name for a lawsuit.
They just put everybody in it.
What actually helps according to research.
And then rebuilding dignity.
That's the part we really want to land on on Monday We'll give y'all a little homework next week.
It's gonna be about rebuilding our dignity self-worth Getting from behind the filters not just Facebook snapchat filters the filters that we literally put on and try to show a Different version of ourselves.
That's not really us.
That's not showing our true potential
Eliminate all the life filters that we put on.
The excuse filters that we put on.

Some filters we put on in life that makes us feel safe.

Today, we was having a quick discussion.
Well, it was supposed to be quick, but I was talking about dating a high value woman, right?
And somebody said, you know, don't come to a woman's house empty handed.
I agreed.
I agreed, right?
And then I simply posed the question to my co-host, Shannon.
I was like, well, Shannon, you know, let's say the tables was turned.
and somebody cooked you a meal or so forth.
And I said, would you think to bring some rum punch or something?
And she said, I don't know how to make no rum punch or so forth.
And then I turned into this whole discussion of like, you know, and I never requested her to bring anything.
I was simply asking, would you think to bring?
So that was a question.
Did you hear me say I was making a request for somebody to bring or was I just saying if the tables was turned, would you consider bringing something?

I'm very familiar with African-American Roundtable.
and very familiar with Halier Park.
But for those listeners that don't know or maybe just joining us, please give the folks a description of what it is that you do and what it is you have coming up here.
And then I got some questions for

So, yeah.
Some folks may know me as Zoe's mom.
Zoe Chambers' mom.
I'm going to start there first because I'm her mama.
And she is making ways and moves in the city and beyond.
But also on top of that, I'm a wife.
And also, yeah, the executive director and around type of, which is probably where most of the folks in Milwaukee know me from.
Been with that org since 2014 in some way, shape, or form, doing some community leadership development, campaign work.
And most recently, Hell You Park Neighborhood Association president for folks who do not know.
It's not something that I'm wearing like a new badge, like, oh, I'm doing this thing and this thing.
I have been called and I answered the call after saying no.
for a few years to lead.
But I am so proud to be leading this neighborhood association alongside the amazing residents and elders here.
And I am really looking forward to what we have coming up tomorrow.
Yeah, so tomorrow is a really amazing day for Hillier Park residents and really the community, the city and the state at large.
We are celebrating 50 years of this amazing neighborhood and we're gonna start off at 11 a.m.
with a statue unveiling.
Now, people are probably like,
Statue unveiling that means outside and it's supposed to rain.
So yeah, we're making some rain contingency plans, but I do believe we still want to do the unveiling outside and we'll probably be transitioning down to thrive on to finish that program.
So there'll be that first.
There'll be some snacks provided in between.
And if the rain is maybe like lighter, we'll be having a neighborhood walkthrough where folks can get to know and see what the properties, the original properties look like, but also some of the new
properties
look
There will be a couple residents who will be propped up at some of their homes again if we don't get rained out of that portion, but people can still drive through the neighborhood.
Some people have never driven through Hellier Park and from there at three o'clock we invite folks to a transitional activity.
Again, more snacks because we always have to feed our people.
more snacks and then just The transition activity is really like a dreaming station like what would you vision?
For hell your parking behind and then we go into a program and it will be kicked off by Shelly Conley our poet Laureate along with some other amazing speakers like Ray Hill and others to really Land the plan of the program and then of course
There'll also be food there as well.
So community gathering, celebrating, and really allowing the residents outside of the neighborhood hear about the visions and what has happened thus far in Halyard Park.
Mm-hmm.
It's about creating pathways of stability, ownership, and generational wealth.
That has been the Hilliers and also Beechie Brooks and so many other residents' desire.
The neighborhood reflects what can happen with residents, developers, and community institutions work together around a shared vision and also black, black.
But like that
has been
So this has been something in the making for 50 plus years because we know that it didn't just start during this, you know, 50 years ago.
This vision was something that had been birthed in folks like the how yours folks like beachy brooks.
And it also is an opportunity to really I would say
re-initiate or re-spark the vision around Black home ownership, generational wealth, and also what can really happen in other communities.
We can do this.
It doesn't just have to be hail your part.
It can be across the city.
And so there's so many lessons to learn from these elders.
And I'm, again, just really blessed and privileged to be under their tutelage and to be working alongside of them to hear their hopes, to hear their visions, to hear their dreams.
But also one thing that I think I hear most from residents
is that this should be duplicated.
This blueprint should be duplicated across the city.
Haley and Park is a beautiful, beautiful area in the city of Milwaukee for folks that do not know.
And what I love about it, it is predominantly people that look like us.
That's right.
You mentioned Beachy Brooks.
So we're honoring Beachy Brooks.
The celebration begins with the unveiling of the
BTO Brooks statue, which you all mentioned earlier.
Who was Mr. Brooks and what impact did he have on Haleyard Park and Milwaukee?
He was a real estate broker, a visionary, and a developer.
And he left his mark on Milwaukee by developing this suburban style subdivision.
So they often called for black middle class.
They often called it like a suburb within Milwaukee.
She shares that her father saw possibilities that others couldn't.
He questioned why black families were limited to these depapitated
housing and excluded from owning and living in a nice home in suburbs.
And I remember something else that she told us during a meeting was when her father first was looking for a home, he was thinking about going out to the suburbs.
And then she said, he decided, I don't want to live out there.
I want to live right in Milwaukee.
So he did the hard work, the hard conversations, the hard meetings, the standing alone, challenging people to create this neighborhood alongside the Hell years for Black.
people so we're doing this in honor of his vision in honor of his bravery encouraged to stand up 50 plus years ago to ensure that black people had a place where they could call home right here in the city in an amazing place but also like right down the street from
You know, also downtown, and all of these other amazing places.
But what a joy it is to be sitting right in the belly of a dream and a vision that has taken place.
Okay.
Well, okay.
So we will I get a couple more questions in with you.
I know you super busy.
So preserving community legacy, right?
We know Halyard Park is a highly demanded neighborhood so much.
So a lot of people outside of the community have been trying to purchase properties and so forth.
And I know people been getting letters from people in Mac won offering amazing numbers for their homes.
How do we preserve community
So yeah, that is one of the things that residents are upset about.
You know, all of the folks who are coming in and trying to buy a property and the issue is because of the constant development.
And yes, we love downtown and we want to see it all develop at the cost of what?
at the cost of who at the cost of you know generations because that's what it is and so one thing that we've been curious about is like how can we ensure that other black families can participate in being residents in the city so right now a lot of the elders
We know what happens in elders in this age.
So they have kids who have moved out of the state.
So that means they're likely not to hold on to these houses if they don't have the capacity to manage them, to rent them, or to move in and sell.
If they've moved out of the state and gone and done something different.
And so what ends up happening is these homes go on the market and these.
folks from outside of the community come in and we have some Airbnb.
So one thing that the residents would love to see is no more Airbnb.
And to be totally honest, some of them are like, we don't want any.
And I'm like, that's probably not going to happen.
So what can we do, which is really state level work, to support putting some type of cap?
on this neighborhood, and even Brewer's Hill has talked about, they have quite a few more than we do, but we don't wanna see these, specifically I'll continue to speak for Haleier Park.
We don't wanna see Haleier Park turn into something else.
And if we keep going in the direction that we're going into with this high development near the neighborhood with all the things going on downtown, coming up the street, we're beginning this gentrification process.
And so it's like,
who wants who do you know wants to buy a house like and so
how do
we have those conversations behind closed doors in community with other people but also this goes towards another conversation around like economic mobility.
who has the money, who has the job that can actually afford to live in this neighborhood.
And so there's so many pieces that would really help to stabilize.
And that goes back to all of the work that I do around with the round table.
So many of us in the community are doing to support.
Actually, a platform of policies that will support black people being able to have affordable quality houses.
And I'm not just talking about in these areas where they just dropping houses off right here in Hillier Park
Let's just say that, you know, you can't make the unveiling.
The statue is going to be there on Halyard Street for the years to come.
And so you can't make it pull up another time to see it or pull up to the program in the evening starting at 3 or 4pm when the actual program starts.
We will feed you.
We will be in community.
We'll be right inside thrive on and also
If you are looking for a home, you should come and holla at us because we want to support residents who want to live in this area.
Or if you're like, hey, I can't live in that area, but I do want to support the amazing vision of Hell You Park also hit me up around that.
We do have a neighborhood association.
And yes.
We prefer it to be, of course, the neighbors, but we do look for community partners and folks who are ready to pitch in because we have so many elders.
And for those who may be residents already, and you are not tapped into our Neighborhood Association, you need to join us.
The elders cannot hold this down, and I cannot hold this down without residents who live right there in the neighborhood, who are able to pick up some of the pieces of this work and help us to live out the vision, but also help
to put their hands and feet into the dirt with us to make it happen.

Young people.
So we want to get into a conversation about filters, self-worth and rebuilding our dignity.

Want to talk about the active lawsuit?
This isn't just a cultural complaint anymore.
It's now a formal legal claim.
Claims against Meta, Instagram, Snap, TikTok, YouTube.
are consolidated in federal courts as the social media adolescent addiction, personal injury, products, liability, litigation.
That's a long name for a lawsuit.
They just put everybody in it.
What actually helps according to research.
And then rebuilding dignity.
That's the part we really want to land on on Monday We'll give y'all a little homework next week.
It's gonna be about rebuilding our dignity self-worth Getting from behind the filters not just Facebook snapchat filters the filters that we literally put on and try to show a Different version of ourselves.
That's not really us.
That's not showing our true potential
Eliminate all the life filters that we put on.
The excuse filters that we put on.
We gonna energize y'all to get rid of all of this stuff.
We not just talking about the beauty filter, no.
Some filters we put on in life that makes us feel safe.
It doesn't show who we are.
It hides who we really are.
