You can you know the website doesn't go away.
The website is always there and there's so much that you can actually go back and look
at some specific numbers or conferences or teams.
Look ahead at schedules as you said and again what is the website?
Yeah at Sully's college football page.com and in fact that's a good segue because next
week we'll start posting on the site on our post and page pages brought to you that
start first one by Carmelo's restaurant.
We'll be looking at the big can and that will be up there so if you want to get an early
look at what we just talked about and something you can kind of review I just go to Sully's
college football page.com and you go to our website where it talks about posts or pages
the pages stay up all year the post rotate out every five.
All right very good and let's talk about some general news and those from college football
we kind of touched on its last segment about the adjustments I guess number one do you
think there will be adjustments and then if you do think there will be what will they
be?
Well you know we're going to find out in April when the commissioners meet.
I think that an easy fix is what you and I talked about because people aren't going
to want to make a lot of changes and nor should they and yet I think that the one glaring
weakness of this was I'm going to I'm going to go back to Oregon should not have had
to play Ohio State in that their first game out and I know that you know because people
start saber red and well you got to beat him anyway yes but if I were if I were then
a landing I would have rather played somebody else after that month layoff and kind of
get our sea legs you know back under us Sabin was talking about the biggest problem he
had with his teams in Alabama was tackling he said that's a skill of diminishing return
and so you would have liked to see Oregon have maybe a less opponent than what I would
say was the most talented team in the tournament right out of the block and not have any played
for a month not that Ohio State wouldn't have or couldn't have beat him they certainly could
have put you like see Oregon go a little ways before they have to play them.
Number two on your list are you looking ahead to 2026 already well you know because
2025 is set sure there's a lot of talk about what should they do for 2026 some people
are saying 14 teams some people are saying stop with the buys and get 16 teams and have
at it you know one of one of the things that I'm surprised they didn't look at a little
more closely and that is there already is a formula with the FCS they play 24 teams they
take all 10 conference champions and automatic birth them into the playoff then what they
do is they receipt them so eight teams get buys and then they have 16 teams go at it nobody
is going to want that many teams and the eight teams that get the buys doesn't matter if
you're a conference champion correct that's the critical point right yes so they after
just the best eight teams yes they get after they get them in then what they do is they'll
they'll see them up to 16 16 remaining teams so one plays 16 and two plays 15 and so on and so
you're you are getting the teams that have performed the best and I the best thought of you're
trying to get them to the championship so ideally you want one to play two that's not to say
you don't celebrate upsets they certainly do but that would be something that they could do
next year if they if they so chose to avoid some of the pitfalls that that occurred this year
but in 26 some are saying 14 with given teams because you've got to get that back to an even
you know to that eight number and so it'll be interesting to see what they what they decide and
they may decide 26 as early as this coming in hmm James Franklin had what he calls
sameness of conference what does that mean I got to tell you I thought Marcus Freeman was going
to jump over the table and get after him you know Franklin I think as you know it's been beat up
constantly about can't win the big one my brother Pat used to say when I started coaching he said
hey dummy I'm gonna tell you something when you lose your bum you're just a bottom line and if you
if you win you can't win the big one right and then if you win and win the big thing you got
talent who wouldn't do it so his he was like him saying hey keep wins and losses in perspective
but anyway in that that conference that sameness of conference yeah he was saying uh look at
we we need sameness and so if if you're not a conference champ you shouldn't be here well you know
Freeman it's like what you know it was like James was getting back at everybody who's kind of
belittled him or then he said that the SEC and the ACC have to start playing nine conference games
because the big ten and the big twelve and they need to to do the the same as as we do and then
then you can start to talk about a similar circumstance going in well that's not what's been
agreed to and in fact the Notre Dame cannot as you know get a buy they have that's ruled out
and short break if they're former AD that was his idea he said that look at since we don't have a
conference championship we should not get a buy we shouldn't have both so no matter if if we
were number one in it we still got to play right all right so he tried to to mitigate that but
Franklin Franklin he makes it's a good point I mean if you're gonna have these he's incredibly
large conferences you can't just be playing eight conference games I think that's silly I just
think that's wrong I think there is something to that that well why should two of the big four
conferences be playing nine conference games and the other two playing eight conference games I
think that I don't think I think he's got a point there I think he does I I've always said
yeah he got to get more but not in that venue and not sitting next to a guy whose team is just
oh come on no there was no I think that that's the exact right then no that's the same and again
that's the same and when there's a tragedy now it's not the time to talk about no that is the
time to talk about that analogy is out in outer limits of someone no no I when you when should you
talk about it then in March April you should talk about it through your AD and when the conference
is me that's when they should discuss it that this is a time I'm on team Franklin for this one
then you're missing the celebratory nature you want to celebrate the dollar signs that's
what they're celebrating come on I can't I can't win this you can't as right this is this is like
playing Nebraska the last game of the season you ain't gonna change my mind on this one no and I'm not
trying to I'm just telling you what the majority of people who listened to that thought so many but he
was right what isn't the bottom line whether you're right or wrong listen if you're saying he's right
right no let me say no I'm saying he's the wrong venue no but you just made it wrong no all which
made it but but the point but the point was right the point is irrelevant no it's relevant is the
tournament all right it's not gonna change anyway I know all right all right um and what next okay um
you know then you know like for instance there are there are nine conferences unless you want
to count the pack two you know so there are there are nine conferences uh five of them were
represented in a tournament four of them were not so what do you do with like for instance conference
USA uh the American was not represented uh the Mac and the Mountain West so what do you tell those
conferences or or do you say nothing you got to be good enough this is a tournament you got to
qualify so the question becomes that's going to be up at some level a discussion and you know you
and I have tried to mitigate that by having a group of five uh playoff I I don't think they're
going to do that uh but they could since this is not the NCA's tournament it's the college football
playoff tournament so they could consider some options now what the power five or the group of five
would say about that and you were you were you talking about the cash money and there would
certainly be more if you were to make that power uh the power four or the college football playoff
as it is now yeah and then they probably would have then they can have their four automatic
births for each of the four conferences and there you go yeah you know I don't know I the only
aspect of all and again I mean I should you know it sounds silly because you receive nine 10
eleven teams in the NCAA men's basketball tournament uh but it gets a little you know I
I mean I don't have a lot of sympathy for those schools that just miss out and say oh we we
should be in we finished 12 to the big 10 conference or or even the case of fourth in the big 10
conference so I can I actually see a lot of the why actually it doesn't really matter what we
think I think I think we're going in that direction I think in the end you're going to see I think
when you hear SEC in the big 10 already talking about these automatic births the they're not going
to stop until they get them and I think in the end we may see this where you know there could be five
from the big 10 five from the SEC and then three from the ACC and three from the big 12 or
something like that because they've already get more of the money yeah so I think I think in the end
we're going to see five teams from these from the big two conferences ultimately in the playoff
you know Chad and that's already happened in basketball yep exactly when the the the whack
split apart years ago from it the whack and then the the mountain west what they did was they gave
them as you know the in basketball at the conference uh tournament winner which it should be the
regular season champ but it's not right um so they had to add an automatic birth to the mountain
west well then the big east and the ACC lost their collective minds because they were saying look at
when um I want to say Vanderbilt not Vanderbilt that's a SEC when Villanova wanted
they were like the eighth ACT uh big East big East team I'm sorry I'll be right in a minute
they got in and won it but under the new circumstance they would not have got in with the mountain
west taken one of those right so what they what they eventually did was add to play in games so they
ate the 68 and then you are one hundred percent right when you say the 69th and 70th team were
raising cane about them not getting we played a harder step yeah again again it's like
and then and actually the thing about the basketball aspect that is different than the football aspect
actually theoretically everybody in basketball does get a chance because with those conferences the
one I think the one positive I agree with you that the conference champion in the regular season
should be the one but basically the NCAA tournament starts with the conference tournaments
it does because if you could you could be on 20 and still win the national championship because
if you win your conference tournament then go through the entirety of the tournament
football is different in that respect that uh if you if you don't do the job early you're
going to be eliminated early yeah you know and that the that is exactly how it is uh the the
counter argument that that is the committee should use the tournament to see who's playing well
that's true but they didn't like the conference champ getting the automatic birth because you
might be our best player and now you're hurt exactly that's what happened to Florida state last year
yes they use that as the reason why they didn't get in yeah and I guess finally well another
topic to wrap it up oh what do you mean for the NCAA step up and take back the FBS championship
I don't see that happening you know I'm just they get no money the NCAA gets no money it goes to
the conferences and the college football playoff committee I'm I'm wondering at some level of the
NCAA were to say hey wait a minute this is an NCAA function this should be an NCAA fun I don't
think there's a chance in 80s it's gonna happen they're not as frankly not as powerful as the
SEC in the big 10 that's the bottom line right you know the the reality is they didn't want to do
this and there was a grassroots movement that wanted this tournament quite frankly I was not
a big proponent of it but now that it's here I mean there are things about it that you really
you know you really see advantages too but they need to protect the regular season that was always
my concern with football all right so interesting stuff indeed Thursday and Friday we had the
national semifinals Thursday night Notre Dame and Penn State and then last night it was Ohio
State and Texas again the the battle of the blue bloods will break it down what happened and why
well I saw the about that coming up next saw these colors football page on 98.9 wxco

Sully's college football page 98.9 WXC. Oh well let's delve into the national semi-finals
they were played on Thursday and Friday night Thursday night was the
Orange Bowl correct correct Penn State in Notre Dame and I think going into it
there was a sense it was going to be an exceptionally competitive game in
the end it was a very competitive game that ended up 2724 Notre Dame went
down to the final moments of the game with a field goal but nobody needs to
watch that game could just put it in the simulator right yeah this the
simulator as you know I've shared with you over the over the years simulator
gets more act more accurate as the season goes on because it's got more data
and it's got data of similar type teams playing one another so it becomes a
little more on point but I don't remember where it was dead on it predicted
Notre Dame would win 27 to 24 and as much as I'd like to chest bump for the
simulator the reality is that's pretty rare chance absolutely well let's delve
into it quarterback play number one Riley Leonard frankly I'll play the
Ella didn't he yeah you know I thought that Josh Allard the better
thrower and maybe a little more polished overall when you consider all
elements of quarterback play maybe that that's true but in this game there was
no question that Leonard put Notre Dame on his back when they were really
being challenged in the first half Notre Dame looked at a quarter-second slow
Penn State looked to be the quicker team Penn State was the more aggressive
team on both lines of scrimmage and it looked like our boy Greg Stanky the
chairperson of the SEC was right about Notre Dame needed another day arrest
because whether that's true or not is certainly a hypothetical I do know a
reality though is Georgia is a lot more physical than a boy's estate and I don't
think anyone would dispute that and so two days but anyway in the first half
that looked like Stanky had a crystal ball and it was reading it right however
in the third quarter love Jeremiah love and Riley Leonard came out with
avengence and Notre Dame looked like Notre Dame of old and this game then
turned into an absolute fist fight and one that down the stretch to your point
Riley Leonard did all play Ju Allard one of the stats I kind of jumped out
looking at it is third downs Notre Dame was able to be very effective on third
downs and Penn State was not how big a factor was that they bizarre absolutely
bizarre when Penn State needed to to get them off the field and get the ball back
to their they couldn't do it 11 of 17 you know you're talking the best teams
in college football are right around that 50% mark on third down that is a very
good staff I think when I looked at the midpoint you know like 162 or 167 I
guess of the hundred or 134 check 67 out of 134 is the midpoint and that's 44
percent Notre Dame was about 65 percent on third down which is tough for
anybody to overcome when you can't get the opposing offense off the off the
field when you look at the defenses some of the couple of the stars did step up
didn't they yeah you know I thought Jack Kaiser had a really good game on the
defensive side and Casey Whealey 16 tackles yeah he was amazing he was the
safety you know play strong safety but he was all over the field you know
another thing that really jumped out at you in this game was the play of Nick
Singleton and Casey Casey on Allen those two guys I would say are the best
tandem of running backs after watching them and that came I think while they may
not have the same level of talent of Henderson and just they they played
lights out against Notre Dame and I mean they both had 80 plus yards Russian
against a very good defense and those guys break tackles and the one thing
that Notre Dame defense does better than anything else they do and they do a lot
of things very well is tackle they do not miss tackles are rarely I see them
miss more tackles in this game on those two then I have you know in any four or
five games they played all year and actually looking at the rushing yardage
for the game I would have thought Notre Dame had had a very little chance of
winning being outrushed two or four to one 16 yeah you know I mean Penn State
just did not give anything to them and you know and Notre Dame really was more
dependent on London throwing the ball in the second half then they were
running which is a kind of a completely uncharacteristic thing for them and
their best runner love German love is hurt he had a bad bum the knee and they
didn't give the ball to to price a lot Jadarian price did not get a lot of
carries and so in fact the neos Williams third back was more involved and
especially throwing the ball to him so Notre Dame kind of said hey we're
having a hard time here and Penn State is committed to the you know to stop
and to run the other thing I point out quickly Jad is that they when
Angelie came in you know he went right through Penn State's defense because I
think they were so conditioned to stop and to run especially with the plus
one you know with Leonard carry in the ball the quarterback and so you got the
extra blocker they were not prepared to deal with him throwing the ball and he
I mean he went right down the field they kicked the field goal and got a 10-3
so a critical element and it really did show you that Penn State defensively
had sold out to stop in the run and I guess finally does always come down to a
handful of plays and at the end there's a couple of big plays turn out to be
the difference yeah and I was really happy for Notre Dame's field goal kicker
he he came from the I want to say North North Carolina State highly
effective kicker 24-27 or some crazy number like that but he was struggling
this year he had an injury and his dad's a physical therapist so they worked
together and he got healthy at the right time and man he was boom in those kicks
with seeming with a lot of confidence and it was a difference maker in both
games that they won in the in the sugar in the orange ball so 27-24 Notre Dame
over Penn State any final thoughts before we take a time out and move on to
OSU in Texas no other than I would say you know for this team to win the
Sugar Bowl against the SEC champ and then turn around and be one of the best
teams in the big 10 in the orange ball is something that Notre Dame is not
accomplished you have to go back into the previous century yes and so I think
this team was able to get a kind of a monkey off their back so to speak in
winning in one year the orange and then the sugar or the other way around
all right we'll talk about Ohio State in Texas in the cotton bowl last night's
national semi-final coming up next so these college football page 98.9 WXC

well what do you got here oh that's easy that's Ohio State correct Ohio State
and of course perfect timing because last night it was the cotton bowl down a
Jerry world deep in the heart of Texas sir it's he he told about something
that should be done maybe if you have two semi finals you should make sure that
the team that's from the state is not in the game I think that was that was
one that's to be a rather simple one where you set up the brackets where you
know where you know you at the very start I mean it seems like that's
something that the committee could have done yeah you know I didn't seem fair to
me it's a situation where you know when when thank you wanted the game moved
today you know I don't know how you would do that I mean it certainly gave
Texas in advantage with the crowd but the thing is before the when they
released the brackets they should look ahead and say hey Texas is in this half
they should just flip the the game you know the the the orange ball should be
maybe the bottom bracket in the cotton bowl the top of the bracket I mean it's
like it seems as though that would have been a some a simple right from the
very beginning so you don't make any changes I mean because they have that
grouped together it just felt like you know that seems a bit again I mean
they don't with a super ball say if you know whoever I forget if it's a new
Orleans is here I don't know if it is but that doesn't mean the same to make it
they make it I guess you know you just deal with it so but but in the end
somebody said I was actually watching somebody one of the TV programs and they
said in the end it doesn't matter because Ohio State travels well because
they're they're gonna cobble up the tickets just as much as Texas well and in
the end it'll be sort of like when Oklahoma plays Texas every year where half
the stadium is Oklahoma read and then the the rest of the stadium is burned
orange for Texas so in the end I imagine I didn't see the game last night to
be honest with those working I imagine it was a pretty even even crowd you know
I would say slightly in favor of Texas maybe 60 40 but that's my
impression without I never heard them talk about you know I think that when
you talk about teams traveling you write about Ohio State they're like the
fourth best in the country the best in the country may surprise our listeners
it's a big 10 team and it's Nebraska Nebraska travels and they you know it took
them all this time to get to a bowl and bend to a bowl since 2016 but they
travel the best and I want to say Ohio State with fourth or fifth and that's
all all you know because you get some SEC schools that'll travel very well as
well 28 14 and OSU another huge win I mean they they beat Oregon now they beat
Texas what was the biggest difference here in this game as you look at you
know a lot of stats here but just generally what was what was it for Ohio State
that allowed them to move on well you know I think that one of the interesting
things in this game that clearly favored the box was their red zone defense a
couple that with Texas struggles in the red zone they have struggled like 68
percent scoring not not touchdowns you know a lot of teams will be like 83
scores and then 65 touchdowns you know if you were breaking apart you know
but based on penetrations that's what the game turned on you know I Texas
had it first single at the one so I told my son and I were watching I said
Michael this game's OT who do you like an OT basically well they they get
stuffed okay then for reasons known but the God they try to toss and you know
Ohio State the one thing that they are perhaps better than defending you
tackle the tackle on the goal line is defending the perimeter with that speed
they've got well they tried that they lost about seven or eight yards then you
know it's third down and now he was starts to roll well here comes Jack
Sawyer who hits him the ball goes straight to the to earth and it was like a
basket ball it was a true bounce right to Sawyer now Sawyer's got the ball
about on the 12 yard light he runs 88 yards for a touchdown so instead of you
know with a couple of minutes to go yeah the score being 21 a piece it is now
28 to 14 and I guess with with the grief of poetic justice it did come back
to their struggles in the red zone and actually another aspect that kind of
jumps out just in the stats is neither team got to a hundred yards rushing I
mean normally these are the kind of teams that are able to impose themselves
with some big rushing plays neither team able to run the ball really much and
all did they know and you know it's funny that there seems to be a
paradigm shift now in football in college football where the defenses are
starting to dominate you know you didn't see a lot of 500 high 400 yards of
off as you saw low 400 if they broke that mostly the games are played in the
300s and then what you're pointing out here is stuffing them you know I mean
how state with the two arguably the two best backs but now I'm kind of
leaning towards Penn State when I saw the other day not being able to get to a
hundred and then you've got blue and wigan those guys were at 58 yards and so
neither team was able to control from an offensive of line perspective the
other respective the lines quarterbacks and obviously when you get to the big
games the quarterback play is huge and you know I think that Ohio States will
Howard had some criticism levied his weight some of the bigger games this
year but he was able to throw for nearly 300 yards and nearly nine yards per
attempt and and then I guess I'll let you what what how would you rate the
quarterback play for both teams I thought it was relatively even you know as
you point out on the numbers Howard was 24 33 completed 77% of his passes
which is impressive but his ratio was only one to one you know so one that's
down to one pick where he was passed for two hundred and eighty three yards so
six-yard discrepancy but his completion percentage 59 he was a percentage
point below what you and I typically say is the floor quarterback has to be
above or at Earth's hopefully above that sixty percent mark but his ratio was
two to one so he threw two touchdown passes so relatively even you know
you you could give an edge with Howard's completion percentage at seventy seven
and six more yards so pretty much of a push there obviously plenty to talk
about with Ohio State now in the national championship game now for Texas
second straight year that heartbreak in the semi-finals yeah how do you look
at that with the program because obviously the incredible success that
Sarkiesian has been able to bring in to Austin break them back to I think
there what they feel is the rightful place at the main table of college football
knocking on the door do you think that this program is going to continue along
this line and do you think that eventually they'll knock that door in yeah well
you know you look at this is their first year in the SEC they played for the
league championship they they they were the last SEC team standing you know
and so I think all things considered there's clearly disappointment here in
this game and especially in that venue you thought a word we're in Dallas
this is our stadium you know this is us we should get this done they did not so
clearly there's going to be disappointment but I think is the dust settles and they
step back and look at their first year in the SEC other than the two losses to
Georgia I mean they they took care of business and advanced in the in the
playoffs so I think all things considered I think there's plenty of positives
there and I think they they think at this point that Sarkiesian is their guy
and now he's got to find a way to take the next step well and and of course I
think you know as much as people have talked about Texas the last couple of
years it's going to go through the rough because I would think that next
season it's going to be Archmantean under center yeah you know he
wears his gone you know you're here and will he go to the NFL you know or I've
been here and lately Alabama that Alabama is interested in him coming and he
may think he needs another year some people think he's ready others say no he
could use another year so that's the story that he'd be yet decided
I'm leaning towards him staying another year in college because of NIL he could get
himself a mill plus if if in fact Alabama is interested and you know that Texas will not be
offering that because I'm sure that this point two years sitting for Manning
high incredibly highly tauted quarterback it's got to be his time yeah you know and in fact
when we were watching the game Mike was saying I think they're going to bring in Manning when
they were on one yard line because he is so much a better runner not that he was can't move but
not like this kit he's an elite runner as quarterback so I thought that would have been something
they would have considered because they have used them sporadically but anyway they did not
they're not going to tell him he got to sit another year if he was where to stay because he
he does have a year where he could stay they're done with he was he's got him back to prominence
but now they want to get to the next step and I'm glad you said that because that is the path with
you know with Peyton with Manning so it's going to be Notre Dame in Ohio State the week from
Monday for the national championships so we're going to take a time out look ahead again two
traditional powers big powers getting together down in Atlanta so we'll talk about that coming up next

championship game um this week they had the the the FCS championship game didn't they?
They sure did it is an excellent game you know Montana State was favored was the champion out
of the the big sky taking out a very familiar face in this game north Dakota State out of Missouri
football conference and for those of you out there make sure when you're describing that conference
you say football conference because the Missouri Valley actually sued the Missouri Valley
and they the the football side of it um was forced to change its name to identify
that they were for football only but their offices are in different cities and so it's really
a different element but anyway all that said north Dakota State got it done by a score
and and won their 10th national championship were you surprised because again they were not the
top seed is that what you expected um you know I have to tell you I was kind of hoping that the
big sky would win it because I think it's good for balance and I really don't have a horse
in that race uh and and yet not surprised that North Dakota State was able to to get this done
because when they get in those games they just I mean they play like they are the the the answer
you know little Ellen Iverson on the on the court but anyway they um they jumped on them
Chad it was 21 to 3 and then uh the game was just a battle with with Montana State eventually
getting it back to a one score game late but never really threatened uh after that so they
they let the game get away from them in the first half in North Dakota State it's just too good
to climb that big of a deficit when the college football playoff began who did you have in the
championship game who did you think was going to get there I thought South Dakota State was going
to play North Dakota no I'm not about the the big one here oh in this I'm sorry I sure
said we're transferring now yeah who yeah who that was because it's Notre Dame in Ohio State who
did you think was gonna ultimately make it um I heard all started yeah I would say um we had
Ohio State as the best roster in the country and I thought Carson Beck would play at a higher level
than he did so I thought it would be Ohio State against Georgia and I thought that Georgia
or that Ohio State this time would would get it done because their roster uh or their starting line-up
was so good you know is that at the start of the season yes okay at the start of the tournament
when the bracket came out okay because obviously Ohio State was different after losing the Michigan
there was a lot of change Georgia was not had the night of the quarterback did you have an idea
when you saw first on the bracket who you thought would make it through you know um well because
you know I was hopeful Notre Dame but I I did think that Georgia would beat Notre Dame um and then
I thought that Ohio State would get its ceilings back after that Michigan loss and they would
beat Georgia so I guess now that I'm talking a lot I didn't change much because I thought
as being in your Georgia had the most depth of any roster and I thought that um well how state
had the best starting line up Notre Dame in Ohio State 14 wins one loss and again one loss to
Northern Illinois still hard to believe going back all those weeks that Notre Dame is playing for
a national championship there one blemish came against Northern Illinois at home you know I would say
that in the last 20 years I'd say you could go back two decades and I'm very sincere about this
the name Northern Illinois would would have been mentioned this year four to one over the last
20 years because anytime anybody talks about the Irish and given the success they've had this year
you never talk about that one I'm talking about Northern Illinois in fact I may have mentioned
this earlier but Northern Illinois they're connecting the dots and they think that since Georgia
won the SEC and that Notre Dame beat Georgia that they they would have been contenders in the SEC
when you look at the two teams I mean you talk about just one of those losses early on that people
thought would be just a killer for Notre Dame and then well you have what was considered the killer
the kill shot for Ryan Day was the Michigan game I mean I don't know if we've ever had a
a national championship game where you had two losses that seemed so devastating to the programs
at the time and yet they've been able to survive them yeah I think that gets back to leadership
I think you know a lot of things you know I don't know who said it you know to me but somebody
said it early in my coaching career you can you can only embarrass yourself you can never
get embarrassed by a opponent as long as you continue to play with a lot of frostity you know you
bring it and you're you can recover from that but if you quit that's how you embarrass yourself
and I think both those teams said look at this is a horrible loss for a house they lose in the
Michigan there are people to add and you and I are both very aware of this who even if a
Ohio State beats Notre Dame are not going to say that was the biggest that there was a failure
that that has greater impact losing the Michigan those people really need to get a life I mean
they got to pay attention you know and so Notre Dame losing to Northern Illinois was quite frankly
for most people and embarrassment I would say no it wasn't it was a credit to Northern
Northern Illinois Maddie Hammock or Thomas Hammock whether the coach there followed him for a while
I went to school at the caliber I took some grade classes there in fact my teacher was a guy
named Noel Armstrong he was the cousin of Neil so we as a talk about the moon later and there's
I can tell it was it was not fake it was it was accurate but anyway you know so credit to them
you know and the fact that Notre Dame then took what was clearly something everybody else thought
they got embarrassed and turned that into what 13 straight wins so how you handle things
clearly these teams have handled it the right way and you talk about change narratives for the
coaches and I think that you know Ryan Day could not win the big one he's won a couple of big ones
in a row and he sure and then you know with Notre Dame is like oh keep losing these games the
teams we shouldn't lose to at home that narrative has changed very quickly as well yeah you know the
thing on Kelly when Kelly was at Notre Dame they used to say Kelly never loses a game he should win
right but he never wins a game that he's challenged you know this year what Marcus Freeman is done
is kind of flipped that you know he's he's gotten in with Georgia most people thought the SCC
champ would take down Notre Dame I think people thought Penn State with their running backs
given a slight edge to Drew Eller at quarterback you know in that defense I mean they are really
formidable defensively didn't happen Notre Dame found a way in both those games went great frankly
they were the they were the underdog and so I think that both teams have done what they needed
to do and now they're eyeball eyeball but look at some of the matchup points next week obviously
with the run up to the game but the idea again is they they've they've met real recently these
programs all a number of the players are up beyond the field next Monday night they're familiar
with each other sure you know they've they have played seven times over the years Notre Dame won
the first two games and I want to say Chad we're going back tonight the 30s you know
then in the 90s they played again when when Lou Holtz was there and we all know Notre Dame
back then was very formidable it was like 95 or 96 97 any George was the featured back for a
John Cooper era yeah it might have been it might have been and they um they
won both of those games they beat you I'm sorry I'm sorry yeah I'm sorry yeah they won both games
close but nonetheless they won them both and then they started playing in bowl games I want to
say in 2016 Ohio State 1net game 12 44 to 28 then they played again in 22 in Ohio State 1net
game 21 to 10 and then they played was that two years ago or was that last year last season yeah
and that was a game Notre Dame should have won they they had the game won they had a huge stop
right at the end of the game they ran a kid a kind of sweep left and they ran them out of bounce
and then for reasons known only to God Notre Dame didn't have estimate their bruiser in the game
where they could roar at a couple first styles that games over they couldn't get it
punter did a good job but then at the they they had 10 guys on the field trying to defend Ohio
State and Ohio State got that done and and won that game 17 to 14 at the time that was a huge win for
day as well I remember being the one of those big road wins that they were waiting for against a
highly ranked opponent so they'll get another crack for a huge win against Notre Dame next Monday night
yeah you know we'll talk a lot about that obviously next week and we've got some definite thoughts
about this game but hey both of these teams had to overcome what what really was challenging losses
and I thought both staffs and the kids did a great job in refocusing and getting to this point
well we'll talk all about it next week the final show of the season right before the final game
of the season so we'll talk to you next Saturday hey I'm looking forward to it and I can't believe
we've been sitting here since August
