I'm Chad Holmes and again, it was a massive week in terms of New Year's is always a massive
time for college football.
And this year it was basically the platform for the college football playoff quarter finals.
And it started off on New Year's Eve with Penn State and Boise State in the Fiesta
Bowl.
And it was Penn State winning by a score of 31 to 14.
When you look at some of the numbers, nothing really blows you away, do they?
Not quarterback, not running back, really just it was a game where there was a lot of penalties.
I mean, it was it was not what you call the prettiest football games.
Well, you know, the numbers were relatively even with one exception and that was the turnovers.
You know, Penn State forced Boise in the four turnovers and that Chad was the difference
in the game.
If you accept what we always say that a turnover is a 14 point swing, you're talking then
with a four to one, you figure four turnovers equates to a 56 point swing.
Now, when you add the one that Boise forced, that brings it back 14 down to about 42 points,
that will change the nature of any game.
So when coaches, you know, everything from rage to wine to, you know, just try to calmly
point out the devastation of turnovers, this game really exhibits that.
Well, Boise State actually had more yards.
They put up 412 yards of total offense, very even or 12 for Boise State, 387 for Penn
State.
And when you look at Drew Allers numbers, they don't jump off the page at you at 13 to 25
for 171 yards, 6.8 yards per attempt, but the major numbers were the touchdowns and
the interceptions, he threw 25 passes and threw you for touchdowns and he never threw a
pick.
Yes, you know, and that he was solid, you know, no picks was the big thing there.
You know, the other thing on third down, Boise was 50%, they were eight of 16.
So they outperformed, they outperformed Penn State and that realm as well.
And then the other thing about this game, it was kind of sloppy.
There were 23 penalties, excuse me, 23 penalties that, you know, we always say five, five is
where you want to max out one quarter and one for aggressor.
But come on, 23, these teams need to be better than that and Penn State going forward.
They really need to firm that up against Notre Dame next week.
During the course of the season, there was a lot of talk about Boise State's Heisman
trophy candidate and the idea that folks aren't seeing a bunch of him because of being
in the Mountain West Conference.
This was the big stage and what was your take?
I thought that he was up against arguably the best defense that he's played against,
you know, his Penn State better than Oregon.
He certainly could make a case, you know, either way, but I would lean towards Penn State
defense.
So for our purposes today, I'm going to say this was the best defense that he's played
against, you know, and he performed fairly well, 30 carries for over a hundred yards, 104
yards, 3.5 yards carry, which is low as standard and he popped one run for 26 yards.
So I thought that he was not with these numbers winning the game, but he certainly belonged
on the field and, you know, the things that you heard about him.
Well, I think we're relatively right on in terms of his performance in this game.
And bottom line is if Penn State plays at this level moving forward, they're not going
to go much further.
Are they?
They have to be better.
Yeah, they cannot commit 10 penalties for 98 yards against Notre Dame.
And Notre Dame, the thing about them is they lead the country in takeaways.
You know, they led the nation in turnover margin.
So they can't really depend on what they did against boys here winning the turnover
battle for to want.
That's going to be a challenge just to stay with Notre Dame in that respect.
The second national semi-final was Texas defeating Arizona State.
I should say national quarter final that was played in the pitch bowl down in Atlanta.
Double overtime, Texas 39 Arizona State 31, again, that Texas led much of the game, but
then late rally by Arizona State forced the overtime with the help of a couple of two
point conversions.
I mean, they were two for two of those two point conversions.
They needed both of them to get back to even they were able to do so.
If you look at some of the numbers, if there's a player that is under the microscope as much
as anybody would be the Texas quarterback, Quinn Ewers, obviously, when you have a manning
sitting behind you and all this discussion and during the season, there was a couple of
I thought shaky moments in terms of where his coach was trying to bring in manning a little
bit.
20 of 30, 322 yards, 10.7 yards per attempt, three touchdowns, the one pick, stepped up
pretty big, didn't he?
Yeah.
Well, you know, the thing that jumps out at you is his yards per attempt.
He was throwing a ball down the field 10.7 yards.
That would equate to every time he throws them all into first down.
His quarterback rating in this in this game was 92.0 and that's related.
Chad Moore to his yards per attempt, 10.7 is what's really elevated that.
Now, quarterback rating, if you maxed out, you could be, I think it maxes out at 1,200
and something and what you would have to do, Chad, I figured out how to do that.
You would have to throw, complete every pass you throw and you're going to like this.
99 yards.
Yes.
Exactly right.
That was for 99 yards.
Then you had Sam Leavitt, 2446, 222 yards, the yards per attempt, much lower at 4.8, had
no touchdowns, one in reception.
But obviously it just felt like he had a tougher task against that Texas defense, didn't
he?
Oh, there's no doubt that the Texas defense, I would say you're going to get arguments
here from Notre Dame, you're going to get some arguments from Ohio State, you're going
to get arguments from Penn State.
But I think the Texas defense of the final four that we have now getting ready to square
off, Texas may have very well the best defense, they've got athleticism and the line to back
or at the debacks and safety, those kids are all very athletic and I would agree that
was a tough, tough task for Sam.
One of the numbers that stood out in terms of the stats that you provided here is not the
actual conversions that Arizona State made on third down was the number of opportunities
they had on third down.
I don't recall seeing too many games where you have 24 third down conversion opportunities.
Yeah, over the years, entering statistics, that number is ominous because you don't want
to have your offense placed in a situation where you're in the money down 24 times, your
first and second downs, you want to stay out of as many third downs as you can to keep
things flowing.
And then when you do, you want that number somewhere between 15 maxed out and down to 12.
If you can keep it there, that's a better deal.
The other thing about the numbers in this game, and this is going to surprise people, Texas
had 375 total yards.
Arizona State had 510.
So here I am talking about their defense.
Arizona didn't share my perspective of Texas defense because they put an outrageous number
on them, that 510, which clearly suggests they deserved a better fate.
Texas this season, I thought early on, they rose to the top of the rankings.
They felt like a team that was as good as anybody.
Did they peak too early?
I mean, it just feels like the last half of the year, they have not been quite at the
same level.
Is that fair to say?
Yeah, I think that this was an eye opener for them because they were playing in a conference
that recruits the best that typically performs at a higher level during the season and puts
more guys in the league than any other conference.
So I think for Texas, this was a little different experience than playing in the big 12.
So they started out non-conference and then they started getting into the SEC, got slowed
down.
Two major challenges were both against the same team, Georgia.
And just for whatever reason, we're unable to get it done against Georgia.
Maybe not as good as we thought and certainly not as good offensively as they have been
over the last few years.
And perhaps the star was born.
I think I was seen on social media.
There were many people who had never seen this guy or heard of this guy before and he
came up big and that was the Arizona State running back Sam Scatable and he had 30 carries,
143 yards, a couple of touchdowns, eight catches, 99 yards.
He threw a 42 yard touchdown pass.
He was doing everything, was throwing up on the sideline, it looked like a bit of a new
legend to his begun.
Yeah, and the guy might have the biggest head, his head's bigger than that.
They said he needs a nine and a half to get it on his helmet.
I'll tell you, that guy's performance was as good as I can remember seeing.
You know, that 42 yard half-back option pass, he threw, changed the nature of that game
in the fourth quarter.
It was 24 to eight.
Arizona State was virtually doing nothing against that Texas defense.
They hit that pass.
Then he has that 68 yard run where the only way they could get it, that was Terri's helmet
off.
Then on a two point conversion check, he was stopped.
There were two, three hundred pound kids from Texas on him.
So it wasn't one of those scrums.
He just blasted into the end zone.
And so I'm with you.
That was as good a performance as I have seen.
And he single handedly took on that Texas defense in the fourth quarter and got that
game back to 24, 24 and gave airs on a state chance to get it done.
There's two of the four national quarter finals.
We're going to take a time out and talk about the other two games that were played around
the New Year's, New Year's Day, and the day after New Year's as we'll talk about the
Rose Bowl and also the Sugar Bowl coming up next as we continue here on Salt East College

1st ever 12 team college football playoff featured a rematch from one of the better games
during the Big Ten season when Ohio State went to a Eugene and lost by one to the Oregon
Ducks, one of the many great escapes that Oregon had during the course of the season.
And once the best way to make sure that Oregon doesn't find a way to win in the second
half is to put the game away in the first half, and that's what Ohio State did.
They came out and they just, they put their hands around the throat of the ducks and were
able to take the huge halftime lead, and then it was all just about surviving the second
half.
And Ohio State beat Oregon 4121, a game that was not as close as the final score would
indicate you look at all the big numbers.
Will Howard had, he talked about the last game with 10 yards per attempt.
Will Howard had more than 12 yards per attempt.
He was 17 or 26 and three touchdowns, no interceptions, Dylan Gabriel, the Oregon Cubi,
the numbers were good, 29 or 41, 299 yards, two touchdowns, no picks.
But in the end, who was really, his numbers came a lot after the game was already in secure
for Ohio State.
And then you look down the line, other numbers as well.
But so I guess what, what stood out, going into that game, what were you expecting and
how close to it was it?
Well, you know, the first thing I think, like everybody else, I was watching, you know,
what Jeremiah Smith would do, and he did not disappoint.
I mean, before you hardly got the popcorn ready, he was running down the left sideline
there for a touchdown, and they just kept the pressure on Oregon and just didn't look
back.
The other thing, when you come out and do what they did to Tennessee, you know, I mean,
they had this fire after the Michigan game, you know, they were going to, somebody was
going to answer them, you know, regarding their failure there.
So you knew that Tennessee was kind of going to be up against it.
But you didn't know if they would keep that going.
You know, you weren't sure that they could keep that level.
And after this game, it gets back to what you were saying off air, you start to realize,
this may be more about talent than emotion.
You know, maybe that emotional thing with Michigan, they've buried another just letting
their talent loose because I'll tell you, man, they looked like we're going to have
to go back and get Joe Burrow and that LSU team to see we can find somebody that can
play with these guys.
First, probably the worst thing that happened for Oregon was Ohio State losing the Michigan
because then they were not part of the big 10 championship game.
You could have seen them play back then for a second time.
They were not a plate in the Rose Bowl, obviously, because Ohio State would have been
a higher seat there.
And in the end, Ohio State not playing in that big 10 championship game, I think was
wonders for that group.
They gave them the time to, I think, you know, decompress from that disappointment, a chance
to step back.
And obviously, you have to give Ryan Day, and I think it's staff a lot of credit for
taking that time and getting this team back into the proper mind frame to perform against
Tennessee and then perform against Oregon.
Yeah, you know, and Kirby Smart had said something, he was speaking to that as well because
people were, obviously, everybody noticed that the teams that got the buys lost.
And Smart was saying, I really don't accept that.
He said, we had time to heal.
We had plenty of time, we could prepare for Notre Dame.
Notre Dame in that game, Riley Mills, their best defensive tackle, the guy that, you know,
six, three, something kind of patrols the middle was gone.
He got hurt.
So he said, you know, you run the risk of injury.
Notre Dame was missing a critical guy to his credit.
He never talked about Carson back.
He just, he just didn't, but, you know, yeah, you wonder, why would it happen if Ohio
State wasn't able to get back on the field quickly or more quick than they were, would
have been able to, had they, you know, had they won the big 10, played in that game and
then got the buy and set for a month.
Well, I mean, actually, I mean, they would have the same time off though.
I mean, they had nothing to do with, they instead of having the time out later, they just
had the time out right after the Michigan game.
So again, it was, I don't think, I don't think it had anything to do with any of these
games.
I mean, again, they talked about the, oh, the lower seed one, well, the lower seed was
the favorite in all these games.
Again, it was us odd, it was, it was an odd conglomeration of teams and matchups.
And in the end, I just think the best teams won all four of these games.
I don't think there's, I don't think it had anything to do with, I'm off, I had anything
to do with anything else except the best team won the football games.
You know, and I'm not disagreeing with that at all.
I think that Notre Dame, you know, in that game against Georgia, you can argue, this Notre
Dame really better than Georgia.
I would give you a big, I don't know.
I'm not sure.
But I know this that Notre Dame was the more aggressive team and won the line is to talk
about that game.
Yeah.
We're still on the world.
Yeah.
Well, no.
Yeah.
That's true.
So Ohio State, I thought just took it to them and it was more a matter of talent than
it was.
One of the interesting things as well as this was not a case where Ohio State was able
to take advantage of Oregon turnovers, have short fields or anything like that.
I mean, there were no turnovers in the game at all.
There were very few penalties in the game at all.
It was just the case that they were able to drive it down the field.
They had 500 yards in order to get to those 41 points.
And again, it was just an old-fashioned whooping, I thought.
And how about the Ohio State defense holding Oregon the minus 23 yards run?
That's a big minus 23.
Well, Ohio State outgained them 500 yards to 276.
They almost doubled them up.
So you're right.
I just came out and got after them.
And the game from a concentration focused standpoint in terms of penalties was impressive
as well.
Oregon had three penalties for 13 yards, Ohio State two for 14.
So both teams focused in on what they were doing, no procedural stuff, no laid heads.
It was just a clean game.
Maybe Oregon needed to be a little more aggressive, you never know that because sometimes we
have no, I think is the same way in a basketball game where you have a game where there's, you
know, neither team is close to the fall limit at the end of the first half.
I mean, is that a clean game?
Where's that just not an aggressive game?
I'm with you, so maybe it's got to be that five number.
You got to have a minimum of five penalties, you know, where you get one or quarter and
then one for aggression.
So two and three, maybe for Ohio State good for Oregon, maybe they needed to be a little
more after the buckeye.
Then you had the final game on January the second when Notre Dame defeated Georgia in
the sugar bowl in New Orleans, 23 to 10.
One of the interesting numbers in that game is the fact that Notre Dame did not get to
a hundred yards passing and that they were still able to win and win rather easily 90 yards
total passing for Notre Dame, a Riley Leonard, a dismal 3.8 yards per attempt and yet they
were able to win and win rather easily.
I don't have it in front of me, I don't think, but I would suggest he did.
I do have it in front of me.
He passed, you know, per attempt for 3.8.
He ran for 5.7, so his legs actually outperformed his arm and I don't remember seeing that from
the quarterback before.
So while the guy was a major factor in running the ball at best adequate, you know, with the
couple of throws, he did complete 62 percent of his passes.
So that was a positive 63 percent.
As did Gunner Stockton, they were both 63 percent in terms of completion.
The other thing, no picks.
Gunner did not turn the ball over, his race show was 1 to 0.
The game actually turned in one short period of time.
I mean, really, when you look at the entire game, Notre Dame within the kickoff return obviously
was vitally important, but they scored basically almost all their points within a very short
time.
You know, how about 17 points in 54 seconds, you know, and that's what happened.
They kicked a field goal and then Kirby was criticized, which I don't think he was warranted
for playing aggressive.
I think from where they were positioned, they could see the aggression that Notre Dame
was bringing.
So with about 40, 50 seconds to go and a half, they had to ball deep in their territory.
They decided to throw the ball down the field on first down to see if they could get
something going.
And they, I want to say it was RJ Oben, the kid that came in from Duke made a big plate
and knocked the ball loose and then to Elamaka, I think that's how you say that guy's name.
He recovered it and then the next plate touched down.
Then a couple of plays for Georgia, then the kickoff and now a game that was 6 to 3 is
now 20 to 3 and you're feeling at that point, Georgia's in trouble.
They are really in trouble with this game.
Absolutely.
And Georgia needed more from at the end, didn't they?
Yeah, you know, they struggled to run the ball against Notre Dame.
Now, you know, Georgia always a physical line, you know, really good backs.
They're down a little, no doubt about it.
And usually this number is inverted, Notre Dame ran for 150 yards, Georgia ran for 62.
So the fact that they were able to hold them to that few or that low of a number running
the ball really was a major factor in the fact that the Irish were able to come out.
So third down shot, Georgia 2 at 12, Notre Dame struggled out third down as well.
In fact, they got a lot of third downs on the Richardson, say, like it's 4 is not a lot.
But they got 2 at the end of the game and at 7 minute mark going down to about 2, maybe
3 minutes when Georgia was able to get the ball back.
And again, it shows that total yardage doesn't always mean everything.
300 yards for Georgia, Notre Dame at 244.
Again, Notre Dame made the most of their yardage.
Yeah, and they wanted to turn over battle, Chad.
You know, and I know sometimes people don't emphasize it, but I would tell you, turnovers are
the silent killer in the numbers, you know, when you're looking at, when you're looking
at statistical data and when the game is complete, those two turnovers, that's 28 points
swing.
All right, and Georgia was not able, given the fact they could, they didn't throw the ball
overly well and Gunner was under pressure all night and then they couldn't run it.
So it was a very difficult task.
And then like you say, that 54 seconds turned things upside down.
Absolutely.
So there you have it.
The four games that were part of the college football quarter finals this week and that
leaves four teams remaining and they'll get right back at it Thursday and Friday night.
We're going to talk about the games and also want to talk, I want to ask Sol about what
the SEC tried to do here in the last day or so.
I don't know if you heard about that, but I want to ask them about this coming up as we

start off with that great sinkie who is the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.
He had asked about the possibility of flipping the cotton bowl classic and the capital one
orange bowl because he was concerned about Notre Dame who was not last time I looked, a member
of the Southeastern Conference, but sinkie's concern was a potential disadvantage for Notre Dame.
The fighting Irish will have to play on a shorter turn around than the Nittley Lions who will
have nine days between games and so again I just sinkie said Thursday on the Paul Fine Bomb show
that he had raised the issue potentially changing the game day and asked decision-makers involved
whether it would be possible. I recognize it would be difficult, sinkie told Fine Bomb. I don't
know if it's impossible. I raised that and the focus quickly became today's kickoff, today's
game won't see what happens. This is not an SEC related issue, it's for both teams.
I also know that communities have dates, they have plans, they have people that bought tickets,
he doesn't care about the fans, it's about, you know, whatever you want. I'm just, I have to admit,
I'm going to say this right off. If the SEC went into a pit and never came out again, I would be happy
because I just think that the way that they think that they run college athletics starting with
football is just getting a little bit old in my mind. And frankly, the Big Ten is right behind
them. I think that Tony Petiti, I think the old TV guy who is now the commissioner of the Big Ten
is almost as bad as sinkie. Well, you know, I got to, the reason I survived this the last 15
years is I pay zero attention to those guys. The SEC, the one thing they do better than play,
which they do at a high level is boast. They are constantly chanting SEC when they should be using
four syllables, L, B, M, that's what they should be doing. Next statement. Yeah, there you go, that
as well. You know, I'm not sure what Stanky's perspectives are there. It's clearly right,
but he at some level, a guy in his position has to know that the dominoes that would start to fall
with that kind of change makes it not even worth mentioning. So I'm not sure what exactly
he was thinking. I will say at least at least who he was opened in his mouth and not talking about
more automatic bids for the SEC, which I'm sure we'll hear once this is all done. Let's talk
again about the games because that's again, the fun aspect. And then you have the semi-final between
Ohio State and Texas. And of course, you talk about again, you talk often about the old blue
blunts. Yes. You talk about traditional powers. You talk about decades, decades of college football
excellence and being at the top legendary coaches. There are royals and the witty haze and all that.
And I mean, I think for a certain group, this is the kind of matchup they want. There are
certain people that want the Cinderella. And there's other point others that want the old blue
blunts. Boy, I'll tell you, we were close to having a Cinderella with ASU. I mean, that came down
that at last play, they defend that fourth and 13. It's them we're talking about and not Texas.
The one commonality of these four teams and as we focus on Ohio State and Texas is all of these
teams can play defense. And you know, with the exception of Texas, they're all running the ball
extremely well. You know, Penn State's got Alan in the case sound or case sound Alan and Nick
Singleton and Notre Dame's got love and price and Leonard in Ohio State's got your my opinion,
the two best running backs, you know, on the same field, on the same team, you know, in Henderson
and Juggernaut. So this game, the simulator, if we get jump right into that, the simulator
likes the bucks. It says an eight category is assessed that Ohio State will win six of them.
What about the quarterback play? I mean, obviously, both quarterbacks have had plenty of experience
during their college football careers. I think both quarterbacks have played well in the college
football playoff up to this point. How do you see that matchup? Well, you know, yours is certainly
the more recognized name in the matchup. And I have to say, I was really impressed with him
when things were going poorly in that Arizona state. He just kept, you know, a stone face and
just kept playing. And then, you know, even when those, those field goals that Texas was struggling
with, down the stretch in the fourth quarter, they missed two. They had the camera on him. I give
me a break. I'm going to watch, you know, no, no real emotion. Like, let's get, all right,
let's go. We got to get this done another way. So, and then, you know, you, you, you look at Howard.
And this kid has, I mean, he was probably there were if they would have taken a vote in Michigan,
or excuse me, in Ohio, after the Michigan game, they would have voted to deport them.
They would have sent him right out of the country. They would have put him on the same
boat with Ryan Day. Yeah, there you go. Yeah, both those guys, you know, sent him to Turkey and
feed him chili or something. The bottom line is they, he's regrouped. And the last two games,
he has looked awful good. So, you know, I don't know that there's a real advantage,
either way with these two guys, how it may be a better runner. In fact, they think he is a
better runner. And not to mention as good as Texas, and they do have good receivers,
he does not have the same talent level that Howard's thrown to, you know, with the Bucke,
and with Jeremiah Smith, those two guys are otherworldly. And obviously, he's going to be very
interesting. And as you talk about the kids like Smith, I mean, you see on both sides of the football
for both teams is that both these teams have the game breakers that are able to do a big time
on offense. But both these teams have the ability on defense is also the step up as well.
That makes I think for the intriguing aspect when you see these outstanding football teams get
together is that yeah, there is a lot of offensive talent. But boy, these defenses have that
ability to shut down very good offenses as well. Yeah, Ohio State has two of the best
players in America in their secondary with Burke and with the kid they got from Alabama. You
know, those two guys, they've got first round picks or second round picks at a linebacker,
and then their defensive line is as good as there is in the country. And Texas answers that,
you know, so both these defenses are really talented. You think Chad that at some point,
if it comes down to the running game, you know, then you got to like Ohio State
because of who they have back there. And as many injuries as Ohio State has had in their
offensive line and they've had significant injury, they're starting to remind me of Notre Dame
in that their offensive line highly criticized. But man, they've circled the wagons and they are
playing at a high level as well. So Texas clearly has got a big bite in the apple there.
That might be very curious to see if it does come down to a field goal and Texas has to make one
how it goes because those were two big misses. I mean boy, he is very fortunate that they came
back and won that game because both were very makeable kicks and he missed them both.
Yeah, he might have been on that boat with Howard. I think you're right. Yeah,
be very interesting to see if that situation comes up again.
You know, when you mentioned Will Howard and I think you're right there. In the last couple
games, he said 630 total passing yards, five TDs in the first two playoffs.
Against both very good teams. Yes, yes, against good defense.
I mean, that's one thing Ohio State. I mean, we talked about, you know, sometimes the,
you know, Penn State and their bracket really I think kind of worked out for them with SMU
and then Boise. Ohio State had to face a Tennessee team that many folks thought had the capability
of making a deep run talent wise. And then of course, Oregon, the undefeated number one
ranked team in the in the country. So Ohio State definitely did not have the bracket that would
be your consider the the easiest road to get to this point. I couldn't agree more. In fact,
I thought Tennessee there was a good possibility of Tennessee would beat them given the disrey
and in all of the chatter that was going on after that Michigan game. In fact,
can't I would tell you that if Ohio State wins it for some Ohio State fans, it won't be enough
because they lost a mission. It just I know and that is so silly, but that's the way it is. But
I'm sure that Ryan Day and anybody that has a brain at the Ohio State University would say
that they would trade a lost to Michigan for a national championship. One would hope so.
I would hope so as well. And then the other guy I want to mention out of Ohio State's defense
that I always like to watch is Jack Sawyer. I think that kid has been playing at a tremendously
high level these last two games and was a solid to very good player throughout the year. But I'll
tell you, he's found another gear in the playoffs and he has been raising cane with opposing quarter
X. Absolutely. So that's one of the semi finals and coming up next we'll talk about the other
semi-final as Notre Dame takes on Penn State. He thought about blue bloods. He got a couple more
blue bloods coming up in that other semi-final. So we'll talk about that coming up next here on

And of course who always talk about you know the the FCS as well there as well there's a lot
that you can dig into. Yeah and I'm glad you mentioned that Chad on Monday for those of
people who really enjoy really good football. The FCS championship has taken place in Montana state.
The only undefeated team left now that Oregon has lost is taken on the perennial you know monster
of the FCS North Dakota state should be a great game. I believe it's on ESPN by you you'll be able
to find that I'm sure and should be a great game and shockingly Montana state is favorite because
usually the big sky is seen as kind of the little brother of the you know the Missouri Valley which
most people Missouri Valley football conference I must say otherwise I'll have us in court.
You know so really I game worth you know if you are able really well worth your time to watch
those two go ahead. Who do you think's gonna win? I think that Montana state is gonna put an end
to the Missouri Valley football dominance conference dominance. This year they're very good.
They played an FCS there in the check and FPS team earlier in New Mexico and beat them and as you
know North Dakota state gave Colorado all they wanted a great game and it'll drop that game early on
and I will be the next best team is also a Dakota South Dakota state who had lost to Oklahoma state
and then those teams battled you know a couple times this year North Dakota state actually
survived them both times so this game on Monday is really worth your time. Absolutely it's a big
week next week and start off with that FCS championship game and then of course Thursday and Friday
the semifinals of the college football playoff we talked about the second game we played on Friday
and then the first game that on Thursday that sole concerns Greg Sanky that need to give
Notre Dame a little more extra time but it will be down in Miami the the Orange Bowl classic 630
PM on ESPN and again when you look at the final four you just have incredible tradition incredible
records of accomplishment and a two more traditional powers Notre Dame in Penn State.
Yeah you know there's so much history with Texas and with Ohio State and then go back to
Joe Pa in his early years and and with Notre Dame you got Rockney and Leahy and Perseesian and Holt
and on it goes you know so you couldn't I'm sure if we took some time we could find somebody that
could fit in there maybe yeah the one of them but I'll tell you this is about as good as you can
get when it's an open field so for whatever work the committee did they can sit back here and put
their feet up because they got a good final for based on you know how these teams are playing at
the at this very point in time it does look like Notre Dame is peaking at the right time. Yeah I'll
tell you Notre Dame somebody you know that that plus one run game you know where they run their
quarterback with Leonard is often as they do and people forget he's six foot four and about
two twenty five two thirty he's a load and the thing about him is he never looks like he's going
that fast and what you need to do is look at his stride he gobbles up five yards and about a
stride and a half and so while guys are are looking like they're moving quicker through that
catch in them and so he is he is surprisingly fast or the elusively or deceptively maybe
is where I'm looking for fast and they've used that in a very effective way and both teams you
know when you look at this era of college football so much spread and so much in terms of
offensive explosiveness and yes they do have players that can do it in that way but this is a
these are teams that do it maybe more in the would you call it an old-fashioned kind of way in
terms of toughness on both sides of the football yeah well you know I think you can start with
Penn State with Tyler Warner that kid is is going to to be a problem for anybody that plays them
he's he's he's kind of a hybrid kind of like to get from Georgia was a year ago you can move
him around he lines up at quarterback in fact I think he was saying he's played everything but
tackle so he was at some point maybe we can get him there he's he is somebody that you really
need to be conscious of you know and on the other side Notre Dame sky the guy in Watts
who is an all-american safety who may be focused on this one or so that could be a really
an interesting match up to watch in this game and then kid how about the running backs you got
single-ton and you got Alan and then on the other side kid we haven't talked about is Jeremiah
or Jadarian price who really in his own right is an outstanding back and we haven't talked much
about him he popped a run against Georgia that got called back but the acceleration when he
went down that signline it was like somebody had fast forward in the tape so there's another guy
so Notre Dame answers with price and love uh quarterbacks little different but very interesting
you know with Drew Aller and then Riley Leonard so all kinds of things that are interesting in
this can also I guess generally in terms of this era of offensive football we see so many high
scoring games and you look at the final four teams all of them are in the top five defensively
well you know if I don't know who said it but you know the idea that defense wins
championships you know that's a figure who did say that I know Lambert and others have said it
you know but I don't know who said it first yeah the bottom line I think all four of these
defenses can play Notre Dame struggles to throw it Texas struggles a little bit to run it
well I'm still trying to find out what Ohio State struggles with uh in Penn State has had
some issues thrown about down the field you know Aller's very effective underneath but you know
this year they've tried to do that but he's still better in that medium short range a passing game
so that said none of these teams struggle on defense they can all take games over and so you
know whoever said that whoever said it first I found out oh did you it's a guy that's obviously
one of the legends of college football back it's not a it was a football person because with
sports it could be any sports you could say that but the person in its somebody that has
is a SEC legend that's a hint oh bear bear Bryant okay so first they said if he's credited with
saying offense sells tickets but defense wins championships you know I remember watching his last
game was a bowl game Liberty Bowler yeah I don't know what bowl I believe it's a Liberty Bowler I saw
the game and uh you know that guy was was just a kind of a bigger than life yeah you know he really
was absolutely so as we go into this week these two semi finals we had a couple of minutes left here
is this going to be I mean we talked about the again the legacy of these programs is this
going to be something that is going to be really good for college football you know I was content
with what we had you know I was all right with the bowls and everybody arguing about whose team was
better you know Alabama still claims that 1966 they were that Notre Dame and Michigan state
tie they're unbeaten and I watched them playing Nebraska they are they the kid from Joliet from my
name like two two winners he was a running back and they just blasted Nebraska beat him 35 to
seven and they're still complaining about it 70 years later so I always liked that part of it but
I have to tell you I'm intrigued by this and it's been fun to watch and we have seen better better
matchups you know even within the big 10 and I know you're a regional guy and like that right and
yet we have seen some games that were that earlier in the year that SC Penn State came out there
when Penn State was down and came back and got it done that was a great game just a lot of good
things have happened with this realignment we just will have over a minute when we're back
together next Saturday morning who's going to be playing for the national championship I think
Ohio State and Notre Dame are going to be playing for it I think Notre Dame is going to be able to
make enough plays the other thing is Abdul Carter they're Dianne the guy who is absolutely lights
up we're talking Penn State now it's questionable banged up yeah you know and even if he gets back
and knowing knowing what you do knowing read about him he probably will try to find a way
and their middle linebacker Kobe King is another guy you know the wear and tear of this
now Notre Dame has lost so many defensive guys but those two defense events that have come in
that have replaced starters you haven't lost a beat and I got to tell you whatever Marcus Freeman
is doing and those two coordinators the advantage in any game is anything they play I'll take
their O and D coordinators over anybody that they're going to be seeing with what they have left
or who they've played we'll see if they keep that aggressive mentality as well so that'll be
private vital as well so enjoy a big week we'll be back next Saturday chat I'll be looking forward
