Week 1: Sully is back and we look at the Badgers, Big Ten, Power Four, Group of 5, FCS and more!

and welcome back Southeast college football page week one of the season for

Southeast college football page week zero for college football but we're glad to

be back we'll be back with you every Saturday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. right

until the Saturday before the national championship game as we do each and

every year and in fact this year got a couple of extra weeks because of the

length and schedule we're gonna be we're gonna be on the air from today all

the way through January 18th so we got a ways to go here and real quickly before

we go into the FCS something that we'll have I'm assuming starting next week

again is it every week you're gonna bring on a special guest and we'll be

able to have the challenge with Sully right yeah you know we've got we got

four people lined up we just got to work through the the days but yeah we like

games go back to them pick five more and give them the final words so yeah great

segment I enjoy that every year and you know we're either gonna have professor

Lopnall some of those superstars or Joey Papausky from the mint or or maybe Joe

Raider from Raider Stowing so and then the final guy this month will be Troy

champion from champion and terrific well we talked about called the the

Darnier pro level the big big ten conference yes and now the FCS which is

something that you focus on so much both here on this show and both on your

lot of fun this year yeah you know these teams there are 13 conferences in

the FCS we track them all so right now on the site Chad we're talking we're

tracking 262 teams there's 134 that we track in the FBS and then now we're at

129 so my math maybe up there we're in the FCS so a lot I think that's right

but we'll figure that out later. I had a long night I might know that I'm not gonna

watch me but I think it's 263 so the bottom line is a lot of work here with the

FCS and I'll tell you they play football at a high level these teams are

really good and we're going to talk on the backside of this how they've done

against the oh then we better get right into it because you gotta get this in one

segment there's not a lot of time we're gonna go in groups of five here in the top

15 you got number 15 Lafayette number 14 incarnate word number 13 sacramental

state number 12 Yale and number 11 Florida 8M yeah you know and so let's go

go quick here when you're talking about Lafayette that's the Patriot League

really good league for them and Lafayette and Lehigh as you know the oldest

rivalry in college football so great stuff there in kind of word I kind of

came out and over the last four or five years it's the largest Catholic

university in Texas and I'll tell you they are good

sacramental state is the team that's constantly beating FBS teams and we'll

talk about them you know Yale won the Ivy League a year ago it's hard to

gauge them because they do not play in the tournament you know that for

some reason they seem to think they're in academics their academic time we're

gonna have to talk craziness yeah you know so good really kudos to them and in

Florida A&M a really good team out of the swag the Southwestern athletic

conference swatted historic black college at university programs 10th or

six you got Richmond the spiders I always love the spiders yeah remember years

ago they always making a run in the March madness yes basketball years number

nine Montana state we've heard a lot about the Montana rivalry in recent

years number eight the Idaho Vandals number seven South Dakota we mentioned

them when they they're coming to Madison pretty soon and number six Albany yeah

you know so when you're talking Montana state to start their plan today they're

one of these FCS FBS games and they've got a good shot they're playing New

Mexico and they may be able as the 63 scholarship program take on 85 and get

them Richmond is out of the colonial Idaho another big sky team used to be in

FBS a couple years ago I kind of dropped down to the FCS South Dakota real good

program an Albany they're out of the colonial you know what I keep saying

colonial my apologies two years ago they changed colonial to coastal so they

are now the coastal athleticists I prefer colonial because I actually know where it

is coastal it could be anywhere and it could be east west south where it could be

everywhere and that's that's you know kind of what they said that they wanted to be

more geographically correct my call in a coastal because it's not in New England

sort of like the ACC I my suggestion last year instead of the Atlantic Coast

Conference they got called the all coast conference because you got you got

Kelly they could be still ACC so I will let them take my suggestions yeah we

should write them a letter you go and then the top five firm and number five you

got Villanova number four North Dakota State of course number three Montana

number two and then South Dakota State number one to start off the New Year and I

got to tell you talking to Villanova is really good program for them check

not for them for men is out of the socon that's the Southern Conference that's

their great conference North Dakota State you're gonna like this next week

they play Colorado so they're going out they're gonna play coach Dianne out

there and South Dakota State is going to see the Mullet they're playing Oklahoma

State so we got some really good games coming here in Montana is really

jumping at the bed to get a national championship again they came close a year

ago against South Dakota standing in one of the things about the FCS is so

interesting is the fact that the quotas and Montana these other areas that

traditionally don't get some of the glory right I mean I actually think that's

great that they have this opportunity and I know that I've kind of pushed back

on you over the years about a tournament that basically would be the the

group of five yeah I know I kind of pushed against that for many years but then

now as we get into these super conferences is starting to feel like maybe that

that time is getting closer for me to actually say maybe you have a point maybe

you got a point but but I do like the fact in the FCS you got some of these

schools that are in some of it we consider the rural parts of the country the

the plains and the mountainous areas and and they're putting together such

wonderful football programs and there of your mind because they have been

offered to come to the FPS and they say no we like it right we're we're doing

the right thing here and we're good with this and I'm glad to hear you say

about your rethink in that a little bit because I really would like to see

that they they can't compete at that level when when you the finances don't add

up that's the bottom line can't do it the way the month is spent by these

schools is just again they're they're they're you know they're professional

sports teams with universities around them in some of these cases yeah I'm

100% and let's look at the FCS because you talked about it we see a lot of

these mattress with the FCS going up against not just FBS schools but good FBS

schools ranked FBS schools what have you learned in terms of what you found out

let me share this in in 21 my reading is right in 21 they played or 2021 the

COVID year yeah they played each other 36 times and the FCS won two games so I

then in in 21 the full season after COVID they played 117 games and the FCS

won 12 and 105 so they win some games therefore and that percentage chance was

10% then in 22 120 games they played and the FCS won 8 and 112 and then last year

they played 118 games and the FCS teams won four and then you can kind of look

southern Illinois is one the last two times they have played so as Sacramento

State I am looking today to see if the FCS can get a win you know with the Montana

State who's very good program and one quick thing with them Chad what they do is

they can give 63 full scholarships but what they do is you can give the

equivalent of those dollars up to 85 which is where the FBS is kept and so what

they'll do is they'll give like 54 and then they'll grow up to 85 with you know

somebody has academic aid or academic scholarship or economic aid then they

combine them and they suddenly have 85 guys on some form of scholarship

pool or partial so they're better than people think well Montana State beat New

Mexico I don't know a lot about New Mexico but I do know

Montana State will not blink in this game they'll go into this game thinking they

can get it and New Mexico and New Mexico State have lost to those big sky

teams out there so this game I'm telling you I'm tuning into hey we talked

now we mentioned slightly the group of five and we're gonna really delve in

because Sully not only wants to see a playoff and he also ranks all these

group of five teams so who are the best among the group of five so we're gonna

find out coming up next as we continue here on the first edition of Sully's

and on the civic media app we are getting the basically set for the season

again there's a few games today but we're trying to get your set for the

upcoming season that really starts to the heat up in the next week and we

talked about the big 10 we talked about the FCS and now the group of five

and there's still five in the group of five as a part of the the power five is now the

power four but as we talked about briefly in the last segment there is a probably widening gap

in terms of resources between the group of five and the power five power four isn't there yes

there and there have been for for quite a while it just hasn't been talked a lot about but yeah

when you're talking the SEC in the big 10 and they now can't have separated themselves

from the big 12 and the ACC and they're getting a bigger percentage oh you know and they're like

I think they're at eighty million uh per team and I want to say the ACC and the big 12 are about

forty million so per school so the reality is that they're they're about doubling them up now

well let's talk about the top 20 and again if you go to sully's college football page.com

you're able to get all this information and a whole bunch more you really get a lot of good

stuff on all the schools not just focusing on on the on the power four and the top teams

but really good delve into all of college football and uh team that uh number 20 San Diego

states and new head coach this year and no reason they should not be among the best in the group

of five based again on resources and location and everything else no no doubt about it Gary

Patterson the old coach had Texas question used to say when they were in the mountain west

everybody's the same except San Diego state they got back 12 talent you know they recruited

Southern California really really a good program struggle last year and a Wisconsin guy is there

now so on Lewis coach here in Madison he's going to do good work there he was at Colorado a year ago

that's a story all in it yeah it is but uh army number 19 yeah well you know a Jeff

Monk is a jolly guy you know and so I always got a guy kind of got to look to see how they're doing

they're in the American this year they're no longer independent so it's going to be real interesting

when they hook up with Navy and there's something I want to talk about that game later but nonetheless

armies in the American and I've got them ranked at 19 uh number 18 is Louisiana

you know that's Billy Napier's old team who's currently at Florida and I used to always love

watching them play defense those kids played with an edge they they were always jabberin to somebody

and I mean they were after it so uh you know right now uh the guy's name is Michael

disormal disormal I think he uh uh you know he he's just getting started there but he had a

decent year a year ago and looked for him to continue to build on that number 17 western Kentucky

and uh western Kentucky seems to be a school that uh it's had pretty good success in recent years

but they seem to be kind of a pit stop sometimes for coaches oh Jeff Brown was there and there's

others that have moved to there the guy that used to be at uh can that Louisville what's his name

got fired he had the issue with an Arkansas oh yeah but he had the western for like a year he

was for one year so was he like drink with staring for a bit yeah you're talking about patino

yeah you know the yeah and this kid that's there now is Tyson Hilton that's Clay Hilton's brother

of the old coach at SC so that he stayed and he's done good work there uh number 16 Troy and

that's another school that's been uh very much noticeable in recent years as well yeah and they

got Notre Dame's defense or offensive coordinator who people were not sorry to see leave South Ben

so he landed himself a pretty good job and you know that school Troy you know John Summer I was

there the last couple years and I want to say they've been like 23 and 4 so you know Jared's

going to have to step up in it because this is a good program number 15 the running reps of

Nevada Las Vegas and again uh you talk about resources they're playing in that beautiful stadium

that the Raiders playing as well don't they can never figure out why they can't recruit better

Las Vegas and they got the right guy now Barry Odom the old Missouri coaches there and they had

a really good year a year ago and looked for them to continue to improve and then we go to one of

your favorite conferences the Mac in the Toledo Rockets coming in at number 14 and I think Jason

Candle he does a terrific job there the other thing about Toledo when you watch them play they have

speed you know you typically don't associate speed with the Mac but when you watch Toledo man those

kids can run you got at number 13 another Mac team Miami of Ohio yeah and I got it I got it

I got to digress a minute uh Martin Chuck Martin was in the news I don't know if you saw I know

but they have the best field goal kicker in the country really yes he was 27 of 28 and I'm talking

50 Yarders that this kid drills well what happened was this summer he went in you know when that

second portal window opened he suddenly went in nobody knew why and then he transferred to

Alabama well now Martin was on on ESPN the other day and said there's no mystery here Alabama

acted illegally and they bought him they contacted him through a third on outside party told him

they entered portal he did and you know of course Kellan the board has fallen all over himself

denying it but we already got a little conference wow and that's going to happen more and more

it is yeah number 12 Fresno State again just a program there for the most part is always there

always doing really good work usually with the offense but always very solid yeah no there

matter used to be anybody anytime anywhere you know and now Jeff tell for the old uh the old

tell for the old telephonia coach is there so uh doing good work wasn't he the old Fresno State

coach and then he came back you know what to say that I think so he's got he's got he's got he

this seems like he's been around uh he was uh you know Aaron Rogers buddy because I think he

pleaded Rogers was there at Cal and and he and Rogers has always been a big fan of his obviously

and uh but not every player is a big fan of their coach but he he has been a big fan of Jeff

Telfer to a guy that really seems to work well quarterbacks uh number 11 Jacksonville State

well this is Rich Rodriguez the guy that really yes he's still hanging around somewhere as you

know and he did great work he learned something yeah he was at West Virginia and they had a great

player um well yes yes really really fast and the story I was going to tell about he had some issues

divine maybe was his name so anyway uh uh deans hundreds got involved said I'm gonna take

this guy and straight him out he stole deans car and they caught him in somewhere in Texas but anyway

so Rich Rodden went to Michigan things didn't work out there but he went to Arizona things didn't

work out there either yeah you know he he would have a spot at West Virginia sometimes the grass

is not always green right and I'll tell you he had a great year a year ago Jacksonville State came

from the FCS and they they were ineligible to win the conference all right you know or as

recognized but they did win it number 10 James Madison the dukes I always love the dukes

and uh they had a terrific season last year as well yeah and that's where said uh Kurt

Signetti to Kurt go to the end and take a few of their players a lot he took a bunch of them

still number 10 you know and Bob Cheney one of the reasons this he did great work at Holy Cross

and now he took this job so did he take a bunch of Holy Cross yeah yeah yeah you know maybe Holy

Cross yeah I'm not sure I'm now in uh number nine Texas states and and again then you look at

their last game beat rice I mean so again that's yeah the thing about Texas is some of these schools

that you really don't know about there there there's so many football teams and football schools

in Texas you see that where they're better than rice yeah you know and this is the only team

from Texas that's in the Sunbelt you know you've got all those teams that were in American conference

USA they're not any of them and this team has been steadily improving and the coach we already

talked about in current word his uh his uh C.J. or G.J. Klaikini is now there was there a year

goal did good work and we've got them ranked in the top 10 at nine uh number eight is Tulane

the green wave and I can't say Tulane with all saying Willie Fritz right yeah your guy that's

another guy that I've enjoyed watching him and uh you know now he's at Houston so he was at

Sam Houston for a while I did great work the last eight years they beat SC in a new year six

four I mean man off season so long I forgot he left yeah are you were you heartbroken with that

happened I just kind of follow him I'm interested to see what he does at Houston I think he's

going to make some noise there because he is a popular guy in Texas so he is going to be able to

recruit at a pretty high level so uh we'll see what happens there uh but John Someral the guy that

did all that good work at coastal Carolina he took this job so I don't see Tulane and most

people in North don't know about Tulane's history they were a member of the SEC there's a lot of

football tradition at that school and then you get uh the number seven and of course another what

what a what an amazing story Air Force football has been not for just 10 years or 20 years with

I remember back going to my Fisher to Barry back in the days I mean I remember back I think

was the 80s where they were like beating Notre Dame every year we don't want to talk about that

but uh they're number seven yeah hey Detroit cow who's still there right yeah well yeah

he's been there it wasn't to Barry and Calhoun are they the only two coaches that have been over

like that and I want to say he's this is his 18th year and he's uh he's been there I want to

say he's like 39 31 and 21 there so he is one uh and that's law I I don't think that's an

accurate number but anyway um he uh he just turns them out every year and last year they were eight

no and then they played army and got I mean army just stopped them and then they didn't win a game

until they beat James Madison in the bowl but this is a very good program and they'll make noise

in the mountain west uh number six Texas San Antonio another program that has been on the

rise in recent years yeah you know and Jeff trailers they're really good coach and I have to say

that I've probably got them lower than it than other people who who rank teams you know the

the NFCS all the way through 134 they're one of the highest if not the highest I think Phil Steele

has them at one athlon might uh we're not buying it yet we'll see how they do number five south

florida the bowls and uh again when you talk about the school I think you can talk about similar

uh foundations yes to build on in florida and texas and california and south florida one of those

schools that's been able to maybe take some of the players that don't go to my army or florida state

and build a pretty successful program right yeah absolutely Alex goal is showed up last year

and things started to change almost immediately because you remember five six seven years ago south florida

was as good as central florida I mean they would line up with them and that was a battle royal they're

going to be back I've got them here at five I would not be surprised to see them get up towards

challenging for the new year six day bowl another school that's been uh you know always popping up

with a nice winter too and uh and doing the job on a consistent basis is appellation state yeah and

how about their win over michigan I know people can remember that for years and years and years and years

and years but my son michael to say the least is not a big michigan fan and he's I think that's

the first thing he thinks about when he gets up in the morning but the the reality here with

appellation state they're going to challenge you know they're in the sun belt they will

challenge for a new year six birth then he got liberty and uh boy they have just been consistently

right near the top of these rankings for a few years now yeah you know Jamie Chadwell is there uh

they as you know a year ago they were undefeated they got to the new year six ball but unfortunately

they had not played against any kind of speed like they saw against organ I watched the game

and they uh they they would be outside in and still could be to the outside you know I mean

that they just were not ready to play against that speed but what a great year they had

and we've got them coming in here to start here third you got way of boys he stayed way up high

boys he has been uh for their standards have not been quite there recently they have not in

what they did to rectify that they hired a kid named Spencer Danielson who was a linebacker there

and has been an assistance for 2000 since 2017 Andy Ovalos was there I don't think they ever really

warmed up to Andy he was having winning records but not the way that they have won over the years

and then Danielson took over they won out with about three or four games to go I think maybe less

but nonetheless they went out and then won their bowl so they um they they offered him the job

and we're uh we're recognizing that is a good move for them and number one in terms of the

group of five Memphis yeah and I got to tell you where's the only ones that did that

I don't know until two days ago I heard Greg McAway McAway the old Roy McAvoy think

that the old quarterback in Alabama say hey you know the team I'm looking at in the group of five

his Memphis and I thought you know I'm getting a like Alabama yeah he's the first guy

when we looked at it that's what we came up with their American team and I think they're

going to make some noise that's Ryan Silverfield so again that is the top 20 in the group of five

and again if you want to find out more about these schools those conferences go to the website

yeah you go there and it'll tell you who they're playing what they're you know uh who they

most recently beat so there's a ton of information there and also I'd mention our game simulator you

can ask if Memphis plays Ohio State who wins and buy the numbers mind you buy the numbers it'll

college football programs in America to start off 2024 and slowly's opinion oh yeah you know

yes the power that's and that's going to take me the whole year to get get right rest in

peace at least for now the pack 12 we'll see whether or not some new incarnation rises from the

ashes at some point but let's talk about the teams at sunny is going to be looking at at least

at this point as the the biggest threats and of course there's school that can pop out of nowhere

to try to challenge for a playoffs pop with these right now are the teams that the sunny things

are going to be the ones to keep an eye on as we get towards the brand new football playoffs which

is coming up you're 12 team plan which is why we're going all the way to January 18th exactly so

well number 25 coming off of five and seven season coming off a number of disappointing

campaigns is Nebraska yeah you know and and I have to tell you I am the only one

or a solid college football page I should say is the only publication that I've seen ranked

Nebraska in the top 25 they had the wheels kind of came off at the end of last year they were

they were at the end of eight games they were five and three and they had beatable teams and four

chances to do it they lost them all I I was shocked that they because I thought that's the effect of

Maddie rule but then the Nebraska effect took over you know yeah they even been a bowl and this

is Nebraska mind you since 2016 so it's been nine years going into this year that they

this year they will make it Maddie rules always done really well in a second year see no reason

not to you know schedules a little tougher because the west is gone but nonetheless they're

going to get to a bowl this year and I think eight wins is there for number 24 is Arizona now part

of the big 12 they did lose their head coach jet fish but real quickly the teams that moved into

the big 12 like Colorado and Arizona and Arizona state this could be I think a pretty good move

because with the Texas and Oklahoma leaving that conference there are some openings at the top

of that league isn't there yeah well you know the the other team notes gone in is winning hamps you

thought yeah yeah and there they are projected Chad by many to win it so yeah the big 12 I would say

this it may not be the best league but show me a more competitive one go this is going to be a

fun race to watch one other thing I'd mention you know we do have portal ranks here and

this Chad is from on three the one we did earlier was 24-7 you're going to like what on three does

they don't care what Notre Dame is done oh Michigan is done they compare internally so they

look at what you did with your portal compared to what you lost in the portal and then they rank

and so they ranked Nebraska at 34 and you have to you go all the way down to 46 before you know

the 46 ranked portal team before you you've regressed so any ranking from 46 up you've improved

and so both these teams haven't proved through the portal number 23 is Miami again Miami has been

they just have not been able to take that next step have they yet no and and I I've clearly got

them ranked lower than anybody else in the country you gotta prove it right yeah that's my thought you

know and they've got a huge game next week a game that I'm going to be all over there not this week

of course but next week they're playing Florida right so that's that's Graham Merz you know I'm

really anxious to see that and building up here and then you know what what Miami's going to bring

to the table this is all interesting stuff 22 is Wisconsin and I think that's I've seen some

thoughts at that's kind of where they're expected to start but I think that Wisconsin in the end

will either be better than that or worse than that this based on the schedule because if they win a

lot of games they're going to be rewarded for it if they lose a lot of games then they're going

to drop because that's the way it works in college football rankings yeah you know in the bottom

line is when you looked at the page of schedule this year I kind of love it because you're you're

seeing four quality teams you know with Penn State and Oregon and help me out here Penn State

USC in Alabama in Alabama yeah it's hard to forget Alabama but nonetheless every other game

there is winnable and you know fickle everybody needs an upset on their resume he's got to find a

way take care of the teams they should be there with and then win one of those games number 21

Kansas State they continue to be a very consistent force in the big 12 conference and they're also

a mystery to me that look where they're they're the recruiting rank is 57th they were 49th in the

portal which means they dropped what they do that recruiting services never get right and you know

this they go to junior colleges and they get those kids coming out of junior colleges and people

they surprise and then they just you know they just find a way in these games and they're extremely

well coached another team that was a had a losing record a year ago that you have in the now in

the top 20 at number 20 is Florida well you know I like Maddie rule building the pier I have a lot

of faith and I watched his teams in Louisiana you know and I got to say the Florida fans sometimes I

think they're from doped them when when Mackle man Easter west of games but you know I get the

impression they brother lose 50 to 49 then win 17 to 14 old ball coach philosophy yeah you know

when when Mackle man was there they were getting to the SEC championship and they were they were

getting beat by Alabama solidly but who wasn't Alabama beating solidly in those years and they wanted

him out because they didn't like the emphasis on defense so style over substance I I guess so I

am really pulling from hurts you know quickly building the pier said his feet are bad we could change

him and he's going to be a lot more effective pressure his his last year was constant his ratio was

10 to 11 last year after he worked with him 20 TDs three picks he was second in the fewest

interceptions in the country number 19 USC and again I think for Lincoln Riley this is a significant

year and I don't think they brought him in to be number 19 yeah no they did not and you know it's

going to be the first the defense you know let's see what they've done on defense they've had

troubles there yeah you know and and and Chad they don't need any more offensive players but

that's what they seem to have and not only off skilled you know the outside the speed guys the

clamor guys they need to get the meat and potato guys and put them in a phone booth to start moving

off the line wasn't that some of the troubles he had late in his run at Oklahoma yes yes yeah

absolutely speaking of Oklahoma their biggest rivals who were not thrilled with them leaving the

conference but still in the big 12 is number 18 Oklahoma State yeah you know I think that with

you know with Mike Gundy you never quite sure that guy is very what you call polarizing I would say

yeah he seems to have a way of sometimes you'll put his foot in a smile I'll say he can and you

know that the thing about him and his teams they play through adversity as well as anybody I

remember himself so yeah yeah sometimes he's struggling to get the foot out of mouth but I

watched them against Notre Dame they were down 28 to 7 in that game they didn't bad and I they

just kept playing in one the game like 38 to 31 or something I've always been impressed with them

and people say well they struggle with Oklahoma who doesn't struggle with Oklahoma you mentioned

Utah earlier you have them at number 17 is that is that a little low maybe maybe but you know I'm

saying that's reflective of the competitive nature of the big 12 not necessarily the outstanding

nature of the big 12 we'll see what happens this is a good team and I couldn't get passed

last year in the bowl game a few remembered Northwestern beat him 14 to 7 so it's hard to digest

that and then rank him much higher than we did number 16 the the new era at Texas A&M here yeah

is it going to calm down a little bit the Jimbo Fisher era just felt like it was always very

schizophrenic and now with Mike and again I don't I mean I understand why he did it but he had

said he was going to stay a duke and that always annoys me but but he's he's done a nice job he

was a good coach at Notre Dame other staff it feels like it's a pretty good fit and I think that

you know he went from Notre Dame as a decordinator to Texas A&M as a decordinator because Kelly fired

them as soon as he interviewed for that job because Kelly had a rule that you could you could

interview for head jobs but not equivalent because we're Notre Dame so we're Notre Dame yeah yeah

wow you know anyway he was well thought of that's not like something you would say yeah I believe

me I'm critical of them as well anyway Alco things are not going to quiet down for him because

they are opening the season against Notre Dame and they're they are projecting the biggest crowd

in A&M history at this game and you know you got the infamous 12 man if you're the visitor

and Mike Dembroke the new decordinator Notre Dame he's saying that place is like an asylum

it's crazy so anyway things are going to stay active for Alco for a couple weeks number 15 is

Oklahoma I mean obviously a new era for OU moving to the southeastern conference it's a big

challenge I mean again but some of these super conferences you could have a team that is ranked

in the top 15 but you would go through this gauntlet and you're gonna you if things go sideways if

injuries go badly things could go really bad quickly as well as being very much in a better

position with national championships right yeah well you know they're the six best recreating

program in a country they hired veterans from Clemson for a reason and they want to get better

because of like you know Riley's legacy they want to get better defensively yeah so we're

gonna see where they're at I know they made some improvements through the portal on D so we'll see

where this team is at right now we got them probably the lower than they would they would think

they should be mentioned Vanables coming from Clemson and Clemson number 14 and it's been

interesting all the success that Clemson has had and a couple of years that don't get them into

into the playoff all of a sudden the the the rumbles of discontent to be bubbling up and being pushed

back by the coach you know and I got to tell you I'm kind of pulling for I'm kind of pulling for

dabbo on this he he does not like the transfer portal he says hey we go recruit we make a commitment

to these kids we expect them to commit back to us and we're gonna develop them and we're gonna

take the guys we recruit and we're gonna win and win big um has an happened and so people get

frustrated to fans and they're already on a guy who has really changed the nature of Clemson

football so Ted next week they go to Atlanta to play Georgia big game last time those teams played

in the first game was like 21 maybe and it was a great game ended up like 14 to 10 or something

like that so one of the big games a week from today number 13 Tennessee and they've under Josh

Hyple has been able to make some nice strides in recent years and right back into the mix where

they expect to be yeah you know and you you think about Josh Hyple second for the high as he's

going the first game that Oklahoma plays in the SEC is against Tennessee and as you know

Joshua was their quarterback in Oklahoma finished second in the Heisman has had a great run of

Tennessee in fact many people will say central Florida's success had more to do with Hyple than

it ever did with Scott Frost number 12 LSU talk about coach Kelly I imagine that let's see

was expecting some returns on their investment well you know they were so bad defensively by their

standards a year ago they lost Mike Timberock they've lost the Heisman winner I Kelly's gonna have

to roll up his sleeves now they are the fifth best recruiting program in the country remember now

that's over four years and an average from three sides 24 seven rivals in ESPN and they did not do

real well according to the portal they lost more than they gained because they finished 48th and

number 11 is Florida state and I'm gonna make a editorial comment okay good I'm a little tired

of the whining from Florida state about how ESPN hates them about how they want to get out of

the ACC how they good now they should have been in the national you know final four last year

and then they lose 63 to three and I know there were accentuating circumstances but at the same

time just shut up already you know when when you win like that it's it's just counterintuitive

because it's not gonna be well received the reality is and I know you're kind of with me and

as if anybody was shortchanged last year it was them dogs you know yes I still think them dogs

would have beaten Michigan I know I'm a minority there maybe I think you're exactly right on that

and so they lose they came to Alabama who by the way the last nine times Alabama has played Georgia

they've won eight eight of nine and so they just struggle with them and um but I I thought more so

than Florida state they were the ones who should have been in that college football and what about

Florida state because I know that Norvelle's in a terrific job he really has brought them back

after some days in the wilderness after Jimbo left uh it's number 11 that's a little bit down

from a year ago what what are your expectations my expectations are that they are favorite on our

site to win the ACC to beat Clemson we'll see how that plays out uh they've lost a lot you know

Travis was a great quarterback he's gone and we saw the result of some of the players that they

lost you know either to the portal or or to the uh to the NFL uh but they recruit well you know they

are the uh uh but not as well as I'm as I'm initially thinking I've got him ranked at 17th

and the system we use so we'll see what happens with them but they're definitely going to be

challenged by Clemson for the ACC championship coming up we're going to talk about the top 10

if the playoffs was today these teams would all be part of the playoffs including Florida state

and LSU as well if you went to the top 12 and obviously it's not going to be that way but

but we're going to talk about the teams that at this point solely considers the top teams in the

countries and it's always at this point and that's a good point and we'll talk about how it's not

if i'm not mistaken yes so 22 so 44 hours will be with here on this program between now and mid

january and the first two are going by this this goes by so quickly i looked up i said i can't

possibly be 10 to 11 but now some good stuff yes hop on the top 10 to start off the 2024 season

here from sully's college football page and uh number 10 and frankly i've noticed when i

follow say high school rankings and college rankings often it's about a little bit of history

rather than but the team is coming back yeah michigan maybe one of those teams could they be

overranked based on what they have coming back and and some of the other issues that are going

on a new head coach and still some other aspects hanging over their head you have a number 10

is that maybe a little high i you know you can absolutely make a good argument that it's

way too high that's it's sort of a tradition you know the name michigan you know i'll tell you

my thinking on that michigan has seven starters back two on offense their whole offensive line

is gone their quarterback is gone their best running back is gone but they recruit well you know

and so if there's a distinction here between experience and talent right they have talent

don't know there's no question about the fact that michigan is talented they lack experience

they've got a couple of games to get going they host Texas in week two so let me ask you about

week one Fresno could that be an upset in week one it's from our Appalachian state you know

Fresno you have them in in the in the group of five rankings third day could they be knocked off

in week number one yeah you know again i probably should say that until next week when we talk

about it but but it feels to me like this is the kind of game that definitely could be an upset

that you know and and they're a dangerous number ten you know i don't week because like you say

and he got seven starters back and experience counts more for talent you know as the talent gains

experience then they're a different club but early on yeah Fresno could potentially be a problem

for them and what and a topic i mean a trend we're going to see here is big ten number nine

big ten Penn State and again they have been in this grouping for quite a while they just have not

been able to get past Ohio State and get past Michigan and there's there's no shame in that

i mean that's the thing about it as well people and i think we found that with Wisconsin after a

while it's like oh yeah we're going to the Roseball we're going to New Year's Day Games but we

want to go to the playoffs and we want to win a national championship sometimes there's a ceiling

yes and i think sometimes with Penn State maybe that ceiling is just just a smidge under Michigan

in Ohio State well if anybody's glad these division has gone away in Penn State because now they don't

got to play Ohio State and Michigan every year which they have lost excuse me the last ten times

they've played the thing about Penn State is their quarterback Allert last year you may not know

this yet he threw 25 touchdown passes and two picks i mean the guy does not throw the ball to

the opposition the knock on him is 90% of his passes were five yards past the line of scrimmage

he doesn't throw the ball down the field you know they've got great runners and singleton and

allen the receiver room has got to step up this year and Allert has got to throw the ball down

the field if he does that their defense is elite we got about five and a half minutes left for

the team so we have to go a little bit quicker here but number eight great program we're a great

story Missouri yeah that's Eli Drinkowitz i always want to say Eli Wallick you know the guy

from the good to bad and yet but Drinkowitz has done great work there and he's when you listen

and he's always kind of defensive because i think he thinks Missouri is constantly being disrespected

i think you're right in that uh number seven i'm surprised you know number one no i know you

were you're very fair about these rankings Notre Dame Notre Dame is elite defensively got one

of the top five defenses in the country their quarterback this year uh was not Lincoln Riley

but Riley Leonard yeah he he is really mobile um their receivers are better they've got solid

runners it's going to come down to their offensive line they lost two all American tackles one

was a fifth pick in the NFL draft so we'll see how their offensive line does and they are in

the mid you know in the lions then next week number six Alabama do look tied uh he probably

as close as anybody to winning a national championship in the fair well for Dick Sabin lost that

heartbreaker no tea to Michigan in the semi-final number six that's actually low for Alabama

this time of year yeah you know and they they are not Georgia Alabama is the number one recruiting

program in the country when you do it over four years and three sites like we do their first

Georgia second the other thing look where they're at in the transfer portal sixty fifth and

that's deceptive because they recruit better players that are in the portal all miss number five

boy Lane Kiffin he's doing a job isn't he you know I've liked Lane Kiffin ever since he used to

Photoshop Sabin in those those those short blue sheets but Kiffin is a great offensive coach

they have done great work um in the portal you know they were for a long time they were the number one

team in the portal got a lot of players in uh the rank third and it's high quality players they've

brought it watch out for them we talked about Oregon earlier in the big 10 rankings so they're

number four real quickly speed just think speed and Dylan Gabriel their quarterback was that Oklahoma

kid can flat out play they are a real threat to win it all this year and Texas looks to be back

number three yeah you know it's occasion he's got more quarterbacks than he knows what to do with

um they're they're uh they lost some guys in the defensive line but this is a program that

recruits again at a very high level Texas uh now we're gonna find out because they're not in the

big 12 they're in the SEC number two Georgia at least you said it early I agree totally uh of

anybody that uh deserved a chance to defend last year it was Georgia yeah that was unfair in my

way yeah you know I know there was all the racket about Florida state but this was the team

that I wanted in the playoffs because I'm always looking for the best game actually yeah and

they're gonna be good I'll tell you I laughed at what uh Kirby said he doesn't have any depth

Chad they had 20 when they won the national championship of 21 they had 26 kids that uh you know

that were critical or part of that of that for the next three years um 25 of them got drafted

because he was saying he doesn't have any more depth you're not gonna have the same kind of

depth in the NIO uh and finally Ohio state number one and again I think number one in terms of

the rankings and number one in terms of pressure yes I'll tell you and we put them first in front of

Georgia because I kind of in flying in the face of what Kirby said we think Georgia has better

depth than Ohio state so Kirby probably wouldn't agree but Ohio state they have more star power when

that Huggins kid went from Mississippi Ole Miss he went to Ohio state he's a great runner and then

they bought Caleb Downes the Alabama's all-American freshman all-American safety is now in that

backfield with Dan Southberg they're loaded 40 seconds left kickoff coming up of the season

in just moments Florida state and Georgia Tech yeah you know for the state of wind this game

you know that that's a Brent uh Brent key is that Georgia uh Georgia Tech and he's always

described as an old timer you know somebody that's gonna do things by the book uh Georgia Tech

may be the most disrespected team in Georgia you know because it's all about the bulldogs

all right we we got it all in and next week we'll talk about a whole bunch of action next week
