Welcome, everyone, to Midday Magazine for this Thursday, May 23rd, 2024.
Have your host, James J. Mailoff here.
In part one, we're going to speak with our good friend, Janelle Weir,
Horticultural Educator with UW-Madison Division of Extension.
Right now, we have in studio with us some of our favorite people.
Steve and Katrina Hintner from Family, Natural Foods.
Good afternoon, you two.
Good afternoon.
How are you guys doing?
Great.
Yeah.
Good.
Good.
The sun's out.
Really enjoying the weather.
And maybe things are drying out.
Maybe.
Maybe.
Sometimes, like last summer, we would just pray for this kind of rain.
But maybe not in this quantity.
I think, you know, we could share some with the months of June, July and August.
We'd be great.
It's a great idea to share.
It's always a good idea to share.
We all have siblings.
We get that.
We learn this.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
We have a great, wonderful guest coming to town here.
And I think that's a great place to kick things off.
Let's do it.
So we're going to have the man, Terry Lemeron.
The legend.
Yes.
The legend.
Terry Lemeron.
Coming to Wisconsin Rapids.
Y'all, he's coming to Rapids for us.
For all of you, this community.
And we're pumped to have him.
This is really great.
When we've had him in the past, we got really good turnout.
And I would give you the time and date and stuff here in a second.
But I would say make sure you come a little bit early.
Especially if you want to like a closer seat or you want to pick your seat out.
Because we've had, you know, near 100 people.
Every time we've had him at our store, actually.
Before the pandemic, after the pandemic, the turnout's always been really great.
And there's a reason there's nearly 100 people coming to a talk on a Wednesday night.
It's because Terry has so much wisdom.
And he's so generous with sharing it.
And you could feel his passion when you're there.
It's a passion, but it's like this sense of his story in life and his mission in life.
And his mission in life is to help people in a natural way.
And really like healing people.
And he loves hearing people's stories of how things have worked so great for them.
But he just wants to spread the word.
He wants to share his knowledge.
And this man has got 50 years plus years of experience.
Yeah, probably more.
I mean, he's been in the industry for years.
And he's seen the ups and downs of everything.
And he's now, you know, he's in his mid 80s.
And he is traveling the world, finding new things, always learning about new things.
And he was bringing it to us.
And I was talking to one of the people at the company.
I think it was yesterday or the day before.
Anyways, earlier this week, they said, oh, like they said, oh, you know, Terry's over in Europe right now.
He's at a conference or a convention, you know, learning about new products and stuff like that.
I was like, he's in Europe.
Like that's a big, like if I was planning a trip to Europe,
I would be exhausted.
And there'd be a lot to do and a lot to stuff.
But this is just sort of like what he's doing this week.
Yeah.
And next week, what he's doing is to family natural foods.
Nicely well.
Wisconsin Rapids.
Which is, yeah, like it turned us up.
We're really excited about it.
To your point about the turnout that happens with Terry,
so many people turn up for this.
You can't even host it at family natural foods.
You have to move to a different location.
Right.
And so I'm going to give the date to everybody just so you can get it.
And we're going to give it to you probably three more times before we're done today.
The date is going to be next Wednesday.
So Wednesday, May 29th at 5.15 pm.
So that's Wednesday, May 29th at 5.15 pm.
So like James was just saying that, and Steve was saying,
we have such a large group of people that will come.
And we love that.
We are so thankful our neighboring church, first Baptist church,
right behind us.
Beautiful white church with the gold kind of rooftop.
It's 9-10 McKinley streets with literally one block behind us.
Yeah, really close.
You can park at the store.
And then you can just walk over.
If you need, you know, having mobility issues,
you can definitely park at the church nearby and then get through.
There is wheelchair accessibility at the church.
Yeah, and the church has a decent amount of parking.
There's a lot of street parking.
So parking is not, parking is pretty easy.
Yeah, so you can park in between the church and in between, you know,
there's a lot of family natural foods.
We are planning on coming back to the store after the presentation.
So Terry's presentation is at 5.15.
It'll be about an hour, maybe an hour, 15 hour and a half.
And afterwards, we'll walk back with Terry.
He's happy to do like many meat and greets, which is great.
And then we'll have different samples of food.
So we have our friends Prairie pastured beef.
We have amazing grass-fed beef samples we'll have.
And then we have forward beverage, which is a Wisconsin up in Wassa.
They're doing different beverages.
And we have some really great unique flavors that people will love.
Yeah, they did a really nice job.
It'll be fine.
Yeah, definitely.
And then to top it up for that, well, we have two more top-offs.
So we have Jersey Valley cheese, which is a grass-fed cheese.
You can taste the difference, like the milkiness in it.
It's so good.
Yeah, all the milk in this cheese comes from their farm from their cows,
which I think is a really cool story.
And one of the farmers, it's a family farm.
One of the farmers is going to be there doing the demo and talking to customers
and letting you sample their cheese.
So I think it's such a cool story to have the actual farmer there.
How often do you get to ask them questions or learn about the pride they have in their cheese?
Yeah, that's a really cool opportunity.
I bought this chunk of cheese at the grocery store.
That's great.
There's a story.
Well, it goes hand in hand with something that I've been talking a lot about
with promoting this event and everything.
And the idea that many of our listeners enjoy Terry on the weekends
and listening to his hour long show that you guys sponsor and we appreciate that.
But this is an opportunity to be in the same room with him,
to be able to really hear him right there, no filter,
and being able to really take this knowledge in.
Terry reminds me so much and I get this from just listening to his radio show.
I can't imagine being in the same room with him and hearing him in person.
He gets me going.
He gets me excited about these things, interested in these things.
I can't remember the last time I didn't like go on my own rabbit hole dive
of when he's talking about something.
I'm like, oh, I want to learn more about Kermek.
I want to learn more about this or something.
And then I spend the next hour on this rabbit hole of things that Terry got me started on.
His passion for this, his love of this.
I think love is a great word for it, is infectious.
And it gets you really wanted to look into it more.
And all of this comes back to you having your best life,
you living your best day.
Being in your complete health, that's what Terry wants,
that's what the gang of family and that your foods wants.
That's kind of what he exemplifies too.
And I think that's really the testament.
You know, an 86 year old guy who's owned a number of businesses over his life
and he could have retired 20 years ago.
Or earlier, he did actually retire when he sold his first business.
He thought at that moment, he was like, oh, this is great.
I'm done.
I can retire. He's probably in his 40s or something.
Retire young, maybe 50s.
I'm not sure.
But you know, as soon as the paperwork was all done,
and he sat down, he realized that was one of the biggest mistakes in his life.
I've heard him tell his story before.
And then he started a new company.
You know, as soon as he could basically.
And yeah, then he's just been working ever since.
So the fact that somebody is still doing this for this long
and is in such good health, 86 years old,
able to travel the world.
I think we can learn something from somebody like this.
I'm so glad you brought that up because not only does it say something
about an 86 year old man doing this,
how much he loves this area, likes coming here,
loves you guys at family and natural foods.
He's not doing that for just anybody at that age and everything.
But also, I can't think of many, like if I was,
like think goodness Terry is not, I am not him
or he is not me or whatever because I could see just walking up there
and being like, I'm 86.
Look at me.
Like you want to know if my products work,
you want to know if what I'm saying is helpful or anything.
I am the example number one right here.
I just traveled to get here.
I took a plane.
I did this or that or anything.
He says he takes all of his products, right?
I mean, he takes like all of his products and hands.
So walking example of this.
He's amazing.
And something else I just want to say that's a huge highlight.
Like, come visit Terry.
Come to the presentation.
But for those folks who are coming to the presentation
and learning about it, we are doing a deeper discount that evening
and we're excited to offer it.
And it's like a discount that we can't do.
We can't even say.
Yeah, we can really say what the number is actually.
Because we're not allowed to say it in advertising.
Oh, you know it's good to be advertising.
Oh, yeah.
But we really want people just to try these products.
Get help with it.
And you know, take their own chance.
Though as Jamie who works at our store would say,
it's a no risk thing to try.
Because even if you came in today or, you know, a month from now,
his products all have a money back guarantee.
So, you know, you try it on sale, even better.
But, you know, you can try it any day.
It's no risk, you know.
And I think that's also been something he's done his whole life
because he knows they work.
And he wants people to give him an honest try.
And, you know, I think this will just be a really great opportunity.
And the last thing that we're going to also have after the talk,
we want to make this an event.
We want people to come to the event, stay awhile, stay awhile afterwards,
is we're going to have some olive oil sampling.
And if you've heard Terry on your Saturday radio here, you know,
he's been highlighting how much olive oil is so beneficial for you.
It's, you know, it's your daily supplement of so much health benefits.
And so, we're going to do some sampling of some olive oils.
Of his favorite olive oil.
It's a Greek olive oil.
He talks about a lot.
He wrote a book on olive oil.
He didn't, you know, like when he wrote this book,
he didn't even sell a product with...
He didn't even sell an olive product when he came out with his book.
But he's that passionate about olive oil.
And I'm flipping through the book right now.
But his, you know, like this...
His passion for olive oil, I'll give you another great example.
Katrina and I got the chance to travel with him.
And we were in India.
So a little ways from out of town, right?
And not in like, you know, Greece where you can get all of this,
like left and right or anything.
No.
So what we were sitting at breakfast with them,
I think it was just the three of us.
And I saw these little bottles.
And I was like, what are these tiny, like, you know, not tiny,
but small bottles.
And I looked closer and it said olive oil.
And so Terry takes little bottles of olive oil
across the world.
Wow.
In his luggage.
Wow.
So he can take olive oil out of it.
Dedicated to taking it as a daily thing.
And I believe it's like...
He'll drink water, but that's his first thing
to break, essentially, like, you know,
I guess, like, a fast in a way, you know.
So it's a big breaking, like, his first thing he eats
because it's so nutritious for him.
And he'll talk...
He talked a little bit about it last time,
but I'm sure he'll talk about it again.
And also, because of kind of our inspiration
and Terry's inspiration, particularly,
we decided to do a talk later, actually, in this summer
on olive oil.
It's going to be...
And we haven't got the date exactly nailed in,
but it's going to be kind of mid-June.
On a Saturday, too.
On a Saturday.
And we're going to talk, you know, probably like 11 o'clock.
You know, instead of watching the cartoons until 11,
just come to family natural foods,
doing some, like, olive oil tastings and samplings.
But also for anyone that comes to the talk on Wednesday night,
afterwards, we'll be doing some olive oil sampling
of Terry's favorite olive oil.
Actually, two of the ones he wrote about in the book.
We've got those featured.
We sell them on our store.
So great, great kind of fun opportunities around this event.
Yeah, so make sure you mark your calendar for Wednesday,
May 29th at 515.
It's going to be at the first Baptist Church,
which is 910 McKinley Street, right behind family natural foods,
and then come afterwards to get some sales, meet and greet.
I mean, literally eating meat, but also meeting Terry in Wednesday,
May 29th at 515.
Everyone, please join.
It's going to be amazing.
Well played.
Nicely done.
And you can even get a sample and idea of what Terry is going to talk about,
or maybe not what he's going to talk about, but how Terry talks,
how Terry handles these kind of things.
Be sure to check out every Saturday 8 a.m.
Terry talks nutrition featuring Terry Lemran,
brought to us by our great friends at Family Natural Foods.
It's a great hour, very informative, and a lot of fun.
Be sure to check it out every Saturday right here at WFHR at 8 a.m.
Terry talks nutrition.
Speaking with Steven and Katrina,
they're from Family Natural Foods.
I was like catching up with you guys about things that are season sensitive,
if you will.
And I know that we've got a lot going on with spring and in spring time
and summer right around the corner.
Yes, so I don't know if you all know, but it's been raining a lot.
Usually in the spring when it rains a lot.
I heard about this.
I heard about this.
There's usually a lot of mosquitoes afterward.
So we want to be your first defense for mosquitoes and sunscreen.
So we want like, we have all sorts of fun options.
So whether it's bug spray for the whole family, including your pets.
Yeah, and we got a really great natural bug spray.
A couple of different brands.
The one we sell the most of it's we've sold it forever.
We've started carrying it because they tested it against Deet.
The chemical you can use for mosquito repellents.
Deet is effective.
But when they tested it side by side,
there's was as effective and actually slightly more effective
in some of the leading Deet sprays.
And I've used it myself since I was a kid basically.
So I could say myself it works just as well.
Periodically, I would do even like control groups.
Things with my friends.
They would all be spraying themselves the Deet.
I'd stand way, you know, ways away.
And I'd use my own bug spray.
And at the end of the day, we'd see how many ticks I'm going to see.
Who's got more bites?
Yeah, exactly.
And it does work great on ticks too.
You know, ticks are, I think, you know, they're out there as well.
And it's nice to have a bug spray.
One thing does it all, you know.
And that's certainly been my experience with this bug spray.
But maybe you don't want bug spray.
And you just want to sit on your porch into the evening.
And you don't want those pesty little bugs to keep getting you.
We have this really fun mosquito and fly.
It's called an outdoor garden stick.
And it's, this is sun and sand.
You can smell it.
So essentially, it's essential oil-based.
Oh, I like that.
I think that lasts for, I want to say like 30 years.
It's like a giant incense stick.
And it's, yeah.
And it's awesome.
And Jamie, who works at the store, raves about it.
In fact, we had to get more because she just loves them.
And she, you know, she'll use it at night.
And it'll, it'll keep the mosquitoes and the flies away for a while.
And you can actually enjoy your backyard without the mosquitoes being around you.
Wow.
So that's a great one.
And then if you have gotten bitten, we have a really good like sting stop.
Kind of bite.
And it's very safe for the whole family.
My kids were using it the other day.
And, yeah, it feels good instantly.
It does.
And you're like, wow, I feel so much better.
And then sunscreen.
We have, you know, baby, kid, adult, water resistant, clean sunscreens.
Yeah.
It's badger brand.
We've carried them for years.
Yeah, they've gotten better and better every year.
I'm like, I don't think this is getting better than they kind of,
they kind of improve it again.
Like, you know, they're zinc based, but they go on so smooth.
You don't even know.
There's no white.
There's no shininess.
It's just like it goes on.
Yeah, really, really great.
I have to note too with those brands, with that brand,
that you're mentioning there in particular too,
as somebody who had not not grown up wearing sunscreen and not used to it and everything.
One of the things I was worried about is that,
that kind of feeling of it on you or the feeling of that layer on you.
And I didn't feel that.
I didn't feel any of that.
I just, it just felt almost like lotion kind of.
Yeah.
Oh, it just evaporates.
I'm good.
Let's go ahead and take this on.
Yeah, they made a new lighter version, which I say is very close to like a lotion kind of quality,
where it goes on and you hardly know it's there.
And remarkably, it even still has a water resistance, I think, for 40 minutes.
And plenty of sun resistance.
Sort of as another kind of knowledge point for people.
Also, when you're looking at sunscreen,
sometimes you look at natural ones like at our store and you'll see an SPF 30.
I think we have a 40.
We have a 50.
And, but you'll go to like the drug stores or something.
You'll see these more chemical based ones that do like 80, 90 years,
whatever, you know, these big, bigger numbers.
And you, so you think, right, that like the difference between like an SPF 30 and SPF 60
is the 60 is twice as strong.
And if you're really worried about the sun, you know, and all these things,
you're going to want twice as much, right?
But that's not how the sunscreen scale works.
It's not a linear scale.
It's the difference between like an SPF 15 and an SPF 30 is like 2% better.
Something like that.
I don't know the exact numbers.
We have the information at our store.
But it's a very small difference.
Once you get past the SPF 15, SPF 30,
there's really not a lot of gain with a 40 or 30.
It actually makes sense.
You know, I wouldn't have thought of it.
This is brand new to me.
This is all very interesting and a very new to me.
And I can't be the only one out there.
We're learning more and more of those of us with, you know,
more pigment are just as vulnerable nowadays to anybody else when it comes to this.
So we're seeing a lot more people using sunscreens and learning.
And some people that are my age, just all of a sudden,
like little kids learning about this.
Like, what is this doing?
You're so right about that.
And that's, it's something that I wouldn't have known unless you guys had talked about it.
So I, it definitely doesn't seem like common knowledge either.
Appreciate you touching on that.
Yeah, I feel like it's just important to mention.
So people don't kind of get sucked into the, you know,
higher numbers are better.
Yeah.
Kind of marketing gimmick really is what it is.
Because it's, it's not going to be much difference to an F.
So you have 30 and SPF 60, for example.
When it comes to those type of sunscreens,
do you guys offer anything that is more of a natural base or more of just a,
maybe even a more comfortable base as far as a bug spray or anything?
Yeah, yeah.
Bug sprays and everything.
Everything's like essential oil base.
So it's all clean and good for sure.
I gotta be honest, I knew the answer.
I just, I would just send you off.
Hey, another seasonal thing is I know it's a moral weekend.
And there's gardening.
A lot of people do their garden this weekend, like this long weekend.
We still have garden seeds.
There are some varieties that are out because people were early birds this year.
For sure.
But we definitely have things around.
So if you need to get some more potatoes or, or, you know,
random different vegetables, peas, corn, etc.
You have it.
It's a good time to get it, you know, now into Saturday too.
Yeah, maybe take a look and see if everything I've washed out.
Yeah, that's another thing.
The wash out, for sure.
Good idea.
So we have that.
And we will be closed on Monday Memorial Day.
I'm guessing most people know that, but just a heads up, we are closed.
But before that, it's a good time to catch some holiday snacks.
Or maybe you're going to grill out with your friends.
Yeah, local meats.
Get some local meats.
I think we've got some new ones that are coming in from Prairie Pastures,
the company that was going to be sampling on Wednesday for our event.
Lots of like, you know, like beef hot dogs.
You can't get beef hot dogs.
Like, so that's a really cool one.
Yeah.
The only kind of hot dogs are like the beef ones.
Yeah, those are so good.
Yeah, absolutely.
And so just a good reminder.
Like we have some fun snacks.
Maybe you want to grab like some beverages.
You're going to be, well, hopefully the weather will be nice.
Yeah, yeah.
Who knows about the weather.
A couple of nice days.
Yeah.
So maybe we'll be like grilling or maybe you'll be outside, you know, and enjoying it.
So get your sun and bug spray.
Get your local meats or any snacks you need for the holiday weekend.
Mark your calendar for Terry Lameron coming through Wednesday, May 29th at 5.15 p.m.
We're just pumped to celebrate.
Yeah.
A lot of exciting stuff.
Throw a little curveball at you guys real quick.
Like I did want to mention to you, you would give me an opportunity to disample and try
this spray.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I couldn't.
I had a written down.
I can't find my notes now.
I wanted to just rave about it for a second because I started using it just because you were
nice enough to let me.
And I thought that was cool.
So I'm going to try for a couple of days at least, but to be honest, I didn't know if I'd
keep up with it.
It is in my part of my routine now.
It is one of those things I do.
And I have been so much thankful, so thankful for it.
I think like a lot of, well, certainly a lot of Jewish people, but a lot of people out there deal with dry skin.
And is it gets warmer and warmer?
Are you dealing with that?
Yeah.
This is such a quick fix for that.
I mean, I'm pretty much the rest of the day.
My face is dehydrated and everything.
People think you need lotion for dry skin, but in fact, it's like, no, no, no, water is a very good moisturizer.
Yeah.
This is an essential oil.
It's a hydrosol.
It's a hydrosol.
So it actually doesn't have any of the oils.
Yeah.
When they're making the central oils, they use the water components of it is what this hydrosol is.
And they're very hydrating.
A lot of lot of lotions, if you look at the back of your bottle, it has alcohol in it.
What does alcohol do?
It dries your skin out.
Yeah.
Well, it may feel like when you put the lotion on, it's hydrating.
It's almost addictive because your body needs more.
Yeah.
Because in the long run, it's drying your skin out.
So yeah, hydrosols are so great.
And they're great for, I don't know, a person like myself, a guy.
Yeah.
Probably like a guy like James as well, who's like, I can't do this whole beauty routine, right?
Yeah.
But I can spray this thing on my face that takes like literally one second.
And it feels.
You're so right about this.
Yeah.
100% right about this.
Yeah.
It's quick and it feels really good.
Yeah.
It feels great.
Not only are you do do all these things for your face, for your skin, but it also just feels nice.
It's a great way to start the sunburn.
Oh, is it?
You can use the lavender or chamomile, I think.
Either one of those would be really great for a sunburn.
Good to know.
Very cooling.
Yeah.
