Family Natural Foods

Rapids Report · Thu Feb 22, 2024

Welcome, everyone, to Midday Magazine for this February 22nd, 2024.

Have your host, James J. Mailoff here.

In part two at 330, we're going to welcome in our friend, Anna James,

natural resource educator with UW Medicine Extension.

Right now in studio, some of our favorite people to talk to,

see even a Katrina Hittner from Family Natural Food.

It's good morning, you two. Good afternoon, I should say.

Good afternoon.

Good to have you guys in studio. Great to see you guys.

Appreciate the time. Let's go ahead and start with what's happening at the shop.

Yeah, there's always, there's always some happening.

Yeah, there's some happenings.

I think when the sun came out, you know, a couple of days ago here,

everybody started looking at their garden because there's no snow on it anymore, right?

It's everywhere. And they're kind of like, when am I going to start planting?

Like maybe tomorrow.

Right? It feels so springy right now.

Yeah.

And to Steven's point, we have some garden seeds.

We do not have every garden seed.

Kind of like I mentioned last week when I was on the radio.

We have, we have some of our seed packets, kind of like

from Acorn squash to Zucchinis and, you know, not just in the squash families,

but that reference.

Yeah, well done.

But they're only in squash.

But anyways, we have some peas and some beans.

Our corn isn't in yet.

Our potatoes and our onions aren't in yet.

So we will let everybody know on the radio when it's all there or when other segments of it is in.

Yeah, it comes in stages, but we got a bunch.

Yeah, we have a bunch in, so you can come peruse.

And if you want to call us up,

yeah, call us up. Let us know if you want to be on the list for when,

you know, onions come in or something like that.

We're happy to do that.

So yeah, and you guys have such a wide variety of seeds

that to be able to choose from and everything.

Even this time of year, it seems like.

Yeah, and what's so cool, like our grandfather was all about,

he was all about having a garden.

And he was all about agriculture and and health.

But he really wanted people to be able to, you know,

have a bushel of a corn squash if they want and not have to spend very much.

Our seed packets are 99 cents and you can probably get a bushel of a corn squash.

You say for like less than a dollar, you can grow bushels of vegetables.

Yeah, so with inflation and everything,

this is like the value proposition.

Our seed packets are still 99 cents.

Like they were like five, 10 years ago,

yeah, I don't know how long they've been out.

It's pretty cool.

We'll have to ask Mike Hittner.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaking of which, he's our next presenter and family natural foods.

Good to see you, Steven.

Nice to meet you.

Yeah, some generational stuff here from grandfather to father.

Yeah, so Mike Hittner, he, that guy, he's going to be in presentation.

And we're not even going to spoil with what he's going to talk about.

But if you know him, he always does a good job presenting.

And he's always got great knowledge.

And like Steven was saying, it's going to maybe be a little bit more of

some of his favorite things that he's done over the years.

So like maintain and, you know,

he's really good health.

And that's kind of what we asked him, like, hey, you don't have to do

a bunch of research, you don't have to like,

with this complicated, just look around your house and be like,

oh, yeah, I've done this for like 20 years.

And I've been doing that for like 15 years or 40 years,

like whatever.

And we're just like, there's so much wisdom in things

that have been lasting, you know.

We followed trends all the time.

And we hear about them in our store pretty much daily.

You know, it doesn't matter if it's Celtic sea salt,

which we had somebody asking for today or

cash or oil, which has been around forever.

But now it's a new hot trend again.

So it's always kind of hard to tell.

Like I mean, Celtic sea salt, we've sold for probably 15, 20 years.

It's been on our shelves.

And then it got on TikTok.

And we can't keep it on the shelves anymore.

We have some more actually right now.

If you like our Celtic sea salt, don't waste any time.

Stop up by family.

Yeah, exactly.

But we finally got, we finally got a good,

a decent supply of, of Castro.

But again, I wouldn't count on that either.

If you wanted to try Castro,

which has been around since before our grandfather's time.

I mean, it's, it's an age-old remedy for aches and pains,

digestive problems.

Somebody said you can put on your belly button

and you lose weight.

Whoa.

I don't know about that one.

But he hasn't tried it yet, everyone.

Yeah.

Yeah.

You can get some at family and attributes

and give it a try yourself.

Yeah, absolutely.

You know, one thing about your, your father,

that I, I appreciate so very much,

is Mike is an incredible, like, public speaker.

Yes.

And, and, and very, very good at it.

And one of the things that I've learned from him actually

in this job and in public speaking is

underst, knowing people and how far that goes.

Your dad knows people.

He gets people.

He, he, he's, he's not only relatable himself,

but he relates himself to others so well.

And the things he talks about,

whether it's with us and historic point boss

or talking about things that family,

natural foods, he, he not only has such a wealth of knowledge.

It's so much fun to pick at his brain

and hear some of that stuff.

But he can articulate it well.

He can get it across well.

That's where he's not talking down to you.

He's not talking at you.

He's talking with you that just, he's a master at it.

You can give a master class.

And part, all of this I say, he does it organically.

Like, I don't, I don't know for a fact

that he's, he ever took any, you know, speech classes

or anything like that.

I'm guessing maybe he didn't.

He did, it's been a couple of years.

Right, right.

It's, it's just natural thing that he's just said.

He's got a natural skill for.

Yeah.

So regardless of whatever he's,

if he's up there reading a phone book, I'm all in.

Like, yeah, well, I can't wait until he gets to the D's.

Like, yeah, so exciting.

Let alone what, what would the topic he'll be

that he'll be diving into with this?

So March 7th at 515 is the presentation.

Don't miss it.

It's so fun.

It's fun to have him, you know,

participating and a lot of people

that miss seeing him at the store on a regular.

I've been telling like some of our, you know,

our, some of our customers that really know my dad

from the past, I'll be like, hey, he's doing a presentation.

I did that today and, and this lady's like,

oh, I'm definitely coming to it because people miss seeing him.

We miss seeing him.

So come on March 5th at five, I'm sorry,

March 7th at 515 and come listen to Mike.

Learn what day of week is that?

That's gonna be a Thursday.

It's gonna be a Thursday.

It's gonna be a Thursday.

So come join us on March 7th at 515.

We'll be talking about that in our good morning shows

and everything.

We appreciate that.

Yeah, I just want to review two sales

before we get on to a couple of their topics.

Pronrom, which we talked a lot about in January

because we had a presentation with Pronrom.

It's an essential oil based company.

They're on sale this whole month

and this whole month meaning we only got another week

and a half of that.

So I want people to know, to come in,

to grab their essential oils,

they're on sale right now

and there's so many amazing ones there.

Ask us, we'll help guide you through it

if you need some new ones.

You can smell them all so you know what you're getting.

Get the experience, smell it, open up your senses.

Yeah, who's speaking of that?

Yeah, speaking of opening up your senses.

Thank you for setting me up so well.

We're gonna talk briefly on sinus and allergy.

So opening up those senses.

When I was in last week talking with you, James,

we only got through one third of what I wanted to talk about

but I'll condense it a little bit more.

It's a reminder, right?

We're, it's February, but it feels like March.

Allergy season comes soon or is here for some

and we like to talk pre-game at family natural foods.

So pre-game being, if you know you get allergies,

let's boost your immune system now.

So you won't be getting potentially allergies

as worse or at all to come in the springtime.

So we have different products to help really boost your immunity

like whether it's Corsetin to help kind of the inflammation

and really keep the histamines at bay.

Or we have, I was talking about this liquid sinus breakup.

It's got some menthol to it, but it also has

more stratish, agonatia, like really good.

It's a staff favorite too.

Like it's one of those ones that like half the staff,

well probably most like all the staff have

and they're like cabinet.

And some people are using this like daily.

I use this daily actually.

And I don't really have sinus issues.

So this sounds odd that I do it, but recently.

That's why.

Oh yeah, that's why.

Nice, nice.

But recently our house is so dry.

It's just that winter dryness.

And so I wake up and I'm kind of like, oh,

and I take this and then I chase it with some water

and I feel so much better.

Because it really opens up the sinus area.

Yeah, and once you get used to that and like,

you don't want anything else.

You're leaving freely through your sinuses

and not having dry nose and all this kind of stuff.

Then you kind of are like, oh, I just want this every day.

So.

I look at it as an immune booster too,

because it's got a lot of heavy hitters in here

that are immune boosters.

Like OSHA is so good for your long health.

It's got a lot of health about them.

It's got angrographis, which is one of our favorites.

And side note, we have this display,

which it's almost done, not quite done.

We're putting our staff favorites on it.

So if anybody even you come in, it's kind of fun way

to be like, oh, what's Katrina's favorites right now,

which might change daily?

Well, right now it'd be a guessing game,

because there's no names on it.

But all of our staff favorites,

is this kind of like, we could make it as a game,

like put a matching thing.

If you get like two thirds of them,

you get like an extra discount or something like that.

Yeah, that'd be fun.

Oh, I'm thinking about this.

Okay, stay tuned, Stephen's coming up with ideas.

Everyone on the air.

I love that.

I, you know, I've talked about this on the air before.

I've always struggled.

I'm not good at breathing.

I'm just not good at it.

I should be more relaxed.

It's kind of useful.

It seems like it's something I should probably work at.

It seems like something that's going to be useful for me.

And most of us out there, everybody's pretty much,

but I'm not alone on this too.

I've joked about it enough where I've talked to listeners.

And especially when it comes to this time of year

or spring, when there is more allergies,

I know a lot of people that will use a nettie pot.

And that's pretty good.

Like I use one every morning.

And by this time in the day,

I'm already feeling clogged up.

I'm already feeling like that it's back.

And it's nothing against a nettie pot.

You can only do so much though.

Right.

And with the weird season we're having,

I'm hearing from a lot of people

that have never really dealt with

though out of the breathing issues

that are dealing with that.

So I think that that's also helpful too and no worthy.

Another one that we're like to consider,

it's on sale this month.

Pranuram has this sinus formula.

It's a central oil based,

but it has a little olive oil on it.

So I'll actually put it in my nose.

And it keeps my nose from getting really dry.

And it can work with either of these formulas,

scenarios like you could do the nettie pot.

You can maybe put a drop of it in your nettie pot.

You don't need too much.

It's just one small drop probably

would really kind of clear things out.

Or you could put it on your nose

or in your nose after the nettie pot

or with Katrina's sinus breakup thing.

You know, there's different ways to do it.

But yeah, this time of year,

it's good to get ahead of it.

And you deserve to be able to breathe.

Absolutely, it's a very important thing.

I don't think that's asking a lot.

Like you deserve to be able to breathe.

There's so much beautiful fresh air out there right now.

Absolutely.

Take some deep breaths.

And know what your weaknesses are

because you could help strengthen them pre-game, right?

If it's the allergy season, you can help strengthen it.

So that's another.

Get a head on it.

It's a really good point.

To work on it naturally,

you kind of have to build up your body's natural resistance

to allergies.

And ideally, even three months would be ideal.

But one month ahead of time is a good idea.

You just don't really know when allergies are going to start.

Spring kind of feels like it's happening today.

I think we're going to have another month or two of winter.

But hard to say.

So you kind of have to start on it early right now, really.

Come on in.

And if you've got seasonal allergies every spring,

start on it now, and you'll find

that they're going to be less severe this spring.

And maybe not existent, ideally.

How long does something like these kind of products do?

They take to kind of feel that they're working

or that they're doing something.

I think it's so individual.

It could be within an hour for some people.

And then it could be a couple weeks

because it's a chronic issue that they're dealing with.

So I think it really depends really

on each person's makeup and what works.

It's something I bring up because I know

for so many people nowadays,

they want an instant reaction.

They want an instant satisfaction.

I took this and it did this.

And there's some stuff out there that can,

but like a lot of things when it comes to your health care,

it takes work, it takes effort, and it's worth it.

It's very worth it.

Again, you want to be able to breathe right.

You want to be, and it's not to say that it's going to be,

it's going to take seven months or something like that,

but it takes time for your body to get used to these things

and to be able to absorb them

and to find out what works the right process for you.

Everybody's different.

Right, agreed.

So we're in February.

It is still heart health month.

And so we want to talk a little heart health

because just like breathing, James,

our heart is another very important thing.

All three of us with the transition today,

nicely done to you, nicely done to us.

After you're done breathing,

that oxygen has to get to every cell in your body.

Including.

And the way it happens is with your heart,

and your cardiovascular system.

There's a whole system to get that oxygen

to ever breathe in around our body

amongst other good things that gets pumped

through our cardiovascular system.

So we've got a lot of really good

heart health products on special this month.

I think there's two that we kind of want to focus on

that are from Terry naturally.

And one of them I think we talked about briefly

in the fall, which was healthy cholesterol with amyla.

One of my favorite products

because it just has so many benefits.

Interestingly, actually both of these interestingly

are great for allergies

and kind of general immune health as well.

So side benefits, we like to call this.

Yeah, amyla is really good for digestion.

It's good for kind of vein health,

vascular health, like varicose veins,

think of things like that.

A lot of things like that,

it's good for these small veins like in your eyes.

So it's actually good for eye health.

Strengthening those capillaries in your eyes.

But what this product is specifically designed for it

and researched for is heart health and cholesterol.

In the research it was shown to reduce bad cholesterol,

triglyceride levels, and increase really notably

it would increase good cholesterol,

which is a really positive marker when it comes to cholesterol.

It also reduces the inflammation,

like C reactive protein, numbers, CRP.

So kind of a really comprehensive product for heart health

and people who start taking this, they stay on it.

I think partially because of these side benefits there,

they're like, oh, my digestion feels better,

or whatever, or my allergies are less.

And also, my cholesterol test came out better.

Of course, this is the kind of thing,

like cholesterol, you're gonna take a little time

to get the numbers reflective.

And it's not gonna do as much as a pharmaceutical drug,

but as far as natural things go,

this one is one of our top sellers

and top products for cholesterol.

I don't know why it seems this way,

but it seems like the hardest, one of those organs

we don't think about nearly enough.

We don't get on that until it's, you know, we need to,

or it's too late or something.

And I get a little worried sometimes,

I catch myself, like I don't want to sound stupid

or something, but I want to ask

because there might be other people out there.

I was gonna ask this off here,

but I'll ask you guys to read up.

Does heart health and circulation, are they tied together?

They seem like they are, but are they?

Because I know there's people out there

that deal with bad circulation and their joints and stuff,

but it's something that my family and I deal with.

But I also know that there are people in my family

that are fine, but also have heart issues.

So are the two automatically connected?

Or...

I think if you looked at like a pharmacy,

they would have, you know, they'd have a different drug

and you'd end up with like six or eight of these drugs,

probably in a course of five or 10 years, you'd find,

oh, I started out just taking a little

blood pressure medicine or cholesterol medicine.

Now I'm taking both, and now I'm taking...

Some different circulation.

Something for circulation and a blood thinner, you know,

you know, the list kind of grows and grows

because it has to work on these targeted things

in these very different parts of the body.

So I think the answer to you is these are,

there's different things, you know,

in the circulatory and cardiovascular system

that need to be addressed.

But when you talk about natural ingredients

compared to pharmaceuticals,

they tend to overlap and they tend to kind of cross,

they have cross benefits.

So, you know, if you started taking this cholesterol formula

because you had high cholesterol, for example,

and, you know, then maybe you'd find,

oh, hey, like I don't have, oh, like circulatory problems,

like, you know, in your joints,

or where you get kind of like cold hands and feet,

you know, maybe it probably, over time,

would probably address some of those things too.

And I think that's what's wonderful about this

and I'd like to remind people,

this is a Terry natural product that we're talking about.

He has one of the best money back guarantees

I've ever seen.

He wants people to try it honestly and thoroughly.

So, you know, he would say, you know,

buy this product, take two a day, you know,

keep your receipts, keep your boxes,

your bottles, whatever.

And you could try it for three months, six months,

you could bring all six bottles back

and you get every penny back if you said,

hey, I tried this for six months, didn't get any results.

It's fine.

So, you could try it for two weeks

and say it didn't agree with me for some reason.

You can return in one bottle, that's fine too.

I just like to remind people,

especially with something we're working with,

that's a longer term thing, like cholesterol.

You gotta give it a long try

and you gotta give it a thorough try.

Don't just take, you know, one a day or one every two weeks,

you know, when you think about it, when the moon's full.

You gotta take it every, you know.

Yeah, it's a consistent one.

And it'll work really well for you for that.

And I think that's a great note, Steven.

I appreciate that.

Real, as a side note, you too.

That was not an easy question.

Way to knock it out.

Yeah, nice.

No one knows you.

It was a very good question.

No, it's an important question.

I'm sure other people are asking that too.

And the second product we've got

is a really new one from Terry Natural.

It's, I'm just catching up on trying to learn more about it.

I was kind of doing a little crash homework

before we started here.

It's called Red Sage from Terry Natural

and it's a really cool product

because it's a Chinese medicine herb.

So it's got a long storied history in China

for a lot of uses,

and I'm gonna get into that in a minute.

But when it comes to Chinese herbs,

I'm always a little suspicious of the quality.

If there's any chemicals or contaminations,

like everything, we're a little suspicious of China,

right?

And I think it's kind of warranted, unfortunately.

Yes, yes.

And Chinese medicine herbs, I'm not as suspicious of

because that's something that's got a history there.

But Terry kind of found the best of both worlds.

So you found this guy in China.

I met the founder of this company,

one time at a conference that Terry was organizing.

He's in Belgium, I believe it is, right?

He's in Belgium.

So in Northern Europe,

and he takes these herbs that are hard to grow

or often are contaminated or have questionable issues.

And he grows them hydroponically

in a controlled environment, they're organic,

they're growing in a way that he can optimize

the active ingredients in these herbs

to make them the best they can be really.

Because you can do this kind of almost like a lab,

it's indoors in a controlled hydroponic facility.

And it's so cool.

And innovations he came up with were just amazing.

So anyways, I know that this red sage

is probably one of the best on the market.

And what's unique about this herb,

and this is where you're gonna pay attention.

So it's always fun to find side benefits, right?

We're kind of talking about that with Amelang,

the Healthy Collestral Project a minute ago.

So with the red sage, in Chinese medicine,

it's traditionally used for a few things.

It's used for cardiovascular health,

but it's also used for like stress and sleep.

So if you have a little bit of stress

or a little bit of sleep problems,

or a lot perhaps, most of us do,

you know, here's a side benefit.

So you can get some benefit for stress,

and then it has a bunch of cardiovascular benefits

also going back to the beginning of our conversation today.

It's great for allergies, like histamine reactions.

It's also good for kind of autoimmune conditions.

So maybe rheumatoid arthritis, stuff like that.

It can help balance that a little bit.

I'm not sure I have to read more about how much it can do of that.

But again, that'd be a great side benefit.

Even if it's just preventing those things,

because preventing autoimmune conditions

could be a really great thing.

And then the big, heavy hitter for this,

well, actually I should add a fourth one.

So here's the bonus one.

It's good for women's health.

It's considered a blood herb.

And so a lot of these blood tonics

are really good for women's health.

And if you want more information on that aspect of it,

you can come in, you can give me more information.

But then the last detail, and the main reason

that Terry's launched this product,

is it's amazing for cardiovascular health.

Circulation, like we were just talking about people

with issues of palpitations, chest pain,

they call it like angina, blood pressure,

it has benefits for some minor benefits

for blood sugar issues, and then cholesterol.

What does it not do?

Yeah, really good question.

Yeah, well, I think that taxes.

That's it.

The only thing it doesn't do is your taxes.

I get to find that product that does my taxes.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, me too, yeah.

Times are taken.

Yeah, maybe the stress would actually help me

get my taxes.

There we go.

It might have ties together.

It's going to help with my taxes too.

There you go, this is great.

No, really great comprehensive product.

And I'm just learning about it.

It's a brand new product from Terry Natural.

Again, money back guarantee on sale this month

and just phenomenal.

So come in, delve into this.

If you like those side benefits,

the sleep, the stress, the allergies,

the women's health, and then everything cardiovascular,

we just talked about, why not?

You have to try it.

I think it's going to help you.

And like I would say, the majority,

if not all of these products we talk about

with you guys at family and natural foods,

there's no negative effects.

There's no necessarily with anything like that.

You're trying these things.

You give it a shot, see how it goes.

James, do we have a minute to try a food sample?

Sure, sure.

Are we doing crept at this?

Yeah, let's do it.

Okay, let's break this up.

What are we going to try?

We're going to try this.

This is the last thing on our list today.

It's smelling it, it smells great.

It's a cre...

Ooh, it does.

There's a crey, like a little puff,

like a little rice cracker.

Like mochi rice cracker.

So like crunchy, like a potato chip.

Ooh.

It's got some fun flavor.

It's not...

Loaded with flavor, yeah.

Loaded with flavor, but not like a hot flavor.

No, but it's so much fun.

Yeah.

Kind of think like Thai curry, kind of.

Yeah, yeah.

Which is really fun.

And we have this really brief little, just say,

we have this like new shelf.

It may be there today.

It may not be there tomorrow.

Kind of try and know something new with the new product.

Yeah, the shelf will be there, the products.

Yes, the shelf will.

Yeah.

But yeah, the products are all just like things were testin' out.

And like if you like trying new products,

this one's one of our new favorites.

And this one I think is a mistake.

I have anything to say about it.

I haven't had curry in decades.

I was burnt of curry.

And I haven't been able to have it.

And I kind of missed the flavor and stuff.

I got it back.

I got it back.

Oh, it's really fun.

That's a really good one.

What is the name of that again?

This one is called Golden Curry Snack Bites.

And super fun.

So come check it out.

Check out the new shelf with random new things

that are coming in and out.

Stop by and say hi to the gang over to family and natural foods.

They're open right now.

Go ahead and join them Monday through Friday, Saturdays,

Sundays.

It's not just a Saturdays.

It's just not on Sunday.

Not just not on Sunday.
