Rapids Report · Wed Dec 13, 2023

Welcome everybody to Midday magazine for this December 13th, 2023.

Have your host James behind the mic and part two at 330 today.

We're going to welcome in our friends from Encourage.

We have Betsy Wood, Dawn Newman, Kim Shields,

going to be with us looking forward to that.

Right now, some of our favorite people,

Steven and Katrina Hintner from Family and Natural Foods

in with us today.

How are you guys doing?

Hey, good.

Doing great.

Happy day, everyone.

Very good day to have you guys in studio.

It's always good.

Yeah.

And glad to hear things are going well.

Very good.

Very good to hear.

Well, happy Hanukkah.

Yeah, thank you.

Thank you very much for that early Merry Christmas, everyone.

Yes, absolutely.

We're talking in our pre-game a little bit about Hanukkah.

I appreciate the pictures and everything.

That was a lot of fun.

Yeah, we got to learn how everyone needs to learn how to play

Dreadel, at least once, right?

Oh, at least once, at least.

It's so much fun.

It's too much fun, not to learn.

It's a fun game.

I want to talk about some other fun stuff.

What's going on over at the shop?

How are things going?

Yeah, so you know, it's the holiday season.

And there's a little bit extra, I don't know,

if it's a pep and ever going step or what it is,

but I appreciate Judith the other day

made our store look a little fancier

with some decorations inside.

She's always doing that.

It looks great.

And it's just fun to have a little extra cheer around

and things that look different.

But a few things that we wanted to mention regarding some sales,

because it's the end of the year, and it's

a good time to highlight a few of our favorites.

And one of our favorites, and we normally never do

Terry natural on sale in December.

But we decided to, he's on sale, not him.

Sorry, he's not for sale.

But the Terry products, the whole line is on sale.

So whether you're looking for Ashwagandha

or you're looking for his corsetin products,

like we kind of have Ada Zee or HQ, you know.

We love for viruses and cold and flu, stuff like that.

Yeah, wonderful.

Yeah, lots of things that are on sale.

We get a lot of people stocking up.

It's been, it's been a good, yeah, it's been good.

Just ordering yesterday, like I got to keep up with this.

Yeah, and I like to think about, sometimes with the holidays,

it's maybe not the coolest gift, but maybe it is the coolest gift,

to give the gift a health, whether it's a gift certificate,

or whether it's, you know, like, oh, you know,

Dad, I was thinking about you, and this product's really great,

and it's for a immune system, or this one's for,

you know, more brain health.

It's such a cool gift.

That's what people need votes to.

Yes, yes.

It's like, you get all these other things,

you get a lot of sugar this time of year.

Yeah.

But really, what we use is a little something

to support our immune system, and our blood sugar was likely.

It's a really good point.

You're going to get enough of the other stuff, you know.

It's important to make sure you get these things in your system.

Yeah, and I also think like reflecting back over the last,

maybe 10 years, I've noticed that being healthy is becoming a trend,

which is wild to me.

But like, you know, learning how to like ferment your foods and garden,

and like, go to a health food store and buy things,

or kombucha, and eating well,

taking vitamin D is becoming every day as well as trendy.

When you have people come in and say, like,

oh, I saw this on TikTok, and TikTok's so trendy,

I don't even have it.

Yeah, not that I'm that trendy.

But I mean, you know, like, I don't know,

I don't have TikTok, but I get people coming in,

people that are older than me oftentimes,

and they say, oh, I saw this on TikTok,

and I was like, what?

And then they'll say something like Castroil,

and I'm like, okay, Castroil, yeah, that's pretty old school.

Castroil's been real for ever,

and yes, it has been able to help with all of the things,

pre-tick-tock.

Yeah, and I was like, I like, you know,

I like a lot of these too,

because it brings awareness to something like Castro,

which isn't a really fancy or cool thing.

Or expensive, either.

Or it's reasonable.

But it is really effective, like, a trend of said,

you know, like, if you have sore knees,

you put it on your, you make like a poultice,

you put it on some old flannel,

you put on your knee, and, you know,

the next, I don't know, hour or so,

your knee's feeling better.

Maybe this was the natural order of things.

It was always going to go this direction,

but I'm with you.

I'm a little surprised that, you know,

since we were kids, there's been a health craze.

Going back to Suzanne Summers and everything,

and people carrying more and more of what they're ingesting.

And we got a lot better about it that is a society,

I think, when we were by the time we were in grade school, even.

But now it's not just, oh, I want to eat healthier.

Now it's not just, I want to look,

I'm looking at the back at the label of everything I pick up.

But now it's also, what can I make from home?

What can I build?

What, what, garden garden, or what can I do?

We're seeing more of that.

That's kind of been the evolution of this.

I think that's a really interesting point.

And our, you know, our grandfather,

our grandmothers, they had massive gardens and large families.

But now we are scaling it down to what works for us,

and whether that's, you know,

just a small garden that has your tomato plants and your herbs.

So, you know, we're not growing plants right now.

We're not here to talk about that.

But if you do want some garden seeds,

we have a few in the back.

We need some packets.

You know, why not?

Give people prepared.

It's a sunny day.

Can grow them in your window.

Yeah.

Or indoors.

But I did want to highlight a few, I think,

I think the store has a lot of good stocking stuffers.

I would call them for the store.

Lots of good gifts, whether it's to give a gift,

to thank a person with if you're going to,

like your aunt's house for Christmas,

you know, whether a thank you gift

or bringing it, making things,

have your food taste a little more fun.

So, some of the things I wanted to highlight

were we've talked about many times,

but our oils and vinegars.

And we love when people come in

and they taste it, they experience it

because that's really fun.

You can make your food taste so vibrant with, you know,

like, truffle oil, basil olive oil,

date balsamic.

We've got like a raspberry balsamic.

I mean, the forest raspberry is so good.

And I think, the other thing too,

is if folks come in and they're like,

I don't know which one they'd like,

you can get them a gift certificate

and two empty bottles.

Yeah, that's a fun way to do it.

And then, you know, maybe write a little note

or whatever, and then they basically

can come in with those bottles

and get them filled with whatever they want.

And they can sample them all.

So, I mean, you can also, you know,

as the gift giver, you can sample them

and say, like, oh, I know this person loves raspberry.

Let me try it. I just want to make sure it's

what I'm thinking.

And, you know, I don't know

but it doesn't like raspberry.

No, it's so good.

But, yeah, if you have any doubt, try it first

which is something you can do with these

wonderful Von Fossoils and Vinegars

and then, you know, get a bottle filled up

or just give them an empty bottle and, you know,

say, come on in and have the fun yourself.

Yeah, for sure.

I've always enjoyed Italian seasoning

on my salad or Italian dressing on my salad.

It's always been my go-to.

I like a good salad.

I like that on there.

When I started trying this,

I did not realize my taste buds literally thanked me.

Like, I got to thank you card in the mail.

I'm like, who's this from?

My taste buds.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Like, they were so happy.

And I thought for all these years,

like, I thought I'd been really good about this.

Oh, Italian dressing.

It's got a lot of pop to it.

It's really great.

I had no idea what I was missing.

You put the other thing I think about this

really cool about those Vinegars is,

you don't need a lot.

You know, they go such a,

a little go such a long way with that.

Yeah, basil olive oil on some noodles.

It's fantastic.

Throw some tomatoes and some cheese on it.

Voila, you're welcome for your dinner.

Yeah, yes, absolutely.

It is a good one, yeah.

So, what they're like great stacking stuffers is,

we have such cool chocolates.

They're so tasty.

And then we've just brought in some really fun ones.

Like, I'm trying to think of the flavors.

I'm sorry, I didn't bring a sample of these ones.

Well, all the times I wanted you to bring a sample.

I know, but we did bring a sample of some chocolate.

We'll give you in a second,

but fun, some fun flavors we have.

It's like a buttered rum chocolate.

And they have such cool, like, the shine.

It's like a shiny one.

There's a sipsit bubbly,

so I think of that as good for now or the new year.

And it's got pop rocks in it, so it's like,

I think you've tried to last year.

Oh, yeah, that's right, yeah, I did.

It did sound familiar.

Your mouth in 3D.

I feel like it's so fun.

It's a good way to cook.

Yeah, it's really unique.

And then there's one that's holy canoli.

So, like canoli is like Italian canolies.

It's got the flavor of that.

And then we have some of our like,

tried and true blends,

which are just like really nice rich dark chocolate,

fair trade, really good.

And I mean, I don't know anyone that doesn't want it.

And then we did bring a sample of this,

is a Wisconsin based chocolate, which we love.

And it's this sweet little tiny size.

And it's called Honey Acres.

It's just cocoa, like chocolate.

And honey in it.

And we're going to give you this as a sample.

But I also thought it was fun,

because when a person is playing dreidel.

Yeah.

So for Hanukkah and you're playing your dreidel game,

this is called what?

Guilt?

Guilt.

So you can try this.

It's gold.

It's gold wrapped.

This is the just plain honey,

but I thought it was perfect,

because it looks like guilt when you're playing dreidel.

And I can eat this.

You can eat that.

Yeah, you can eat it now.

I mean, I guess if you want to save it later,

you can save it.

I kind of wanted to to show my mom,

but you could just take a bite out of it.

Yeah, I'm taking bite out of it.

Yeah, maybe save her a tiny nibble for later.

But it's just honey and chocolate.

And it's made in north of Milwaukee area.

So simple, so tasty.

She's not getting any of this.

I mean, in the whole thing.

Yeah, I can't help myself.

I'm sorry, mom.

I will get you some.

No, that is really good chocolate.

Yeah.

Chocolate's great,

but you can tell the difference of good chocolate.

Oh, yeah, you really can.

Like it took and tell us older to realize that.

That is really nice chocolate.

Not too strong, not too rich.

Good combination.

Yeah, smooth.

I find that some chocolates are like,

waxy.

These are not like smooth and really nice.

So lots of good chocolate varieties.

Speaking of chocolate,

we have a really fun hot chocolate mix.

That's got Ashwagandha in it.

Or there's one that's got Tamarik.

So it's like up in your hot chocolate blend.

Yeah, it's kind of a spice,

like sort of more like maybe a little bit like a Mexican hot chocolate.

But it's an innovative hot chocolate.

Yeah, it kind of goes a different direction.

And you're getting like health benefits

and enjoying hot chocolate.

Yeah.

And so Ashwagandha is really good for adapting

to different stressors in our body.

Just that's a tiny little bit of what it's good for.

Yeah, that's so much good for the immune system, etc.

But I thought that's fun.

It's in this hot chocolate bun.

And the packaging's really fun too.

That sounds really good.

Guys, I love hot chocolate.

I would move to a cold state

just so I could drink hot chocolate.

Oh, you're here, welcome.

Yeah, right, right.

That sounds really cool.

I don't know if I've heard of that before from companies.

Like inserting those kind of things

into a hot chocolate or something, that's unique.

Yeah, I thought it was fun.

It was a new one that we saw.

And then we have,

well, we have Mary Manley makes wonderful mittens.

And I'm going to hand you a pair to put in your hands.

They're so nice.

What I love about her mittens.

Which one is unique?

Each one is unique.

They're recycled sweaters.

Most of them have wool to it.

They're super soft inside.

Oh, they are so soft.

And then Mary's signature thing is that

it's kind of like walking art.

So it's functional, right?

You're going to stay warm.

But it's also going to have really fun,

like art artistic.

Like the one I have in my hand is this beautiful red.

It's got a fun button

and it's got this pocket in the front.

So you could put chapstick in there

or a hand warmer or just enjoy it how it is.

That's a really cool design.

I love watching people come in

and they see this display kind of, you know,

up towards the top of the store.

And they'll, it draws them in.

All the color and design.

And then they, you know,

they'll start looking at it

and they look at every single one.

Because like, it's like a trainness that day,

like they want to find the one that's like the one they like.

And oftentimes you'll see them

like with two or three in their hands,

like doing like this one.

Like, you know, the hard dilemma.

Yeah.

Which one is my favorite?

And so yeah, it turns right.

Like each one's unique

and you can really find your style.

Yeah.

That unique part is so key to this too.

Because so many people, they want that.

They want an item that, whether it's for themselves

or something, they're gifting.

They want a unique item.

This is, I mean, you walk around

anywhere in family and after food,

you're going to find unique items like this.

And this in particular,

not only is it a cool and unique item

and great, so soft, so well made.

Well, you're buying local supporting loans.

Yeah, it's Mary who's here in town

and I do want to make a disclaimer about this.

She will be picking up these mittens.

I believe next week, Wednesday.

So we won't have them until Christmas.

We'll have them just before.

So if you want a pair of these mittens,

I would come in by this weekend and pick them up.

On the first selection.

There's more selections.

Yeah, I think one of those things, like,

if they all look the same,

you could just wait until the last day.

But I'd say, let's say come in early.

It's such a great stocking stuff or two.

You've never heard anybody say,

oh, I've got enough mittens.

I've got enough gloves.

Like, you always lose one glove.

You're going to need another one or something.

It's nice to have.

Even if they don't need a pair, it's nice to have a backup.

Yeah, absolutely.

I want to highlight another great stocking stuff

or is our essential oils.

We have two different brands.

The now foods one is on sale this whole month of December.

So a great time to stock up,

whether you're making homemade gifts,

like bath bombs or you're making a salt

or something you're putting essential oils in,

or you just need to stock up for the season

and you know people have a diffuser and they want to use it.

They're so good.

And it's a great price point.

I'm not going to give you the peaceful sleep one,

even though I love this one.

It's so good because I don't want you to fall asleep.

That's a good idea.

It's a good idea.

But this is nature's shield.

You can smell that.

It's got a lot of cinnamon in it

and it's really good for immune health

and putting around the room just to kind of...

I kind of like it this time of year, sort of.

Oh, yeah, that's what I was just thinking, Stephen.

Yeah, that's perfect for this time of year.

Anytime you're probably good,

but really this time of year especially.

So that one's a really fun one

and it's a good time to get it

with the sale happening right now.

That's another one of those products.

It's such a perfect stocking stuff.

Because even if people,

you go to this person's house

and they got 50 essential oils,

they're going to need more.

You go through those things and stuff it

and that's a great idea.

I like to highlight, we get some soap.

So the name alone is fun.

The look of it kind of like Mary's Mittens,

they're art piece within soap.

We all need to wash our hands.

We all need to use soap.

Their soaps are so nice.

They're goat's milk soap.

So they're really soft

and they're really nice for your skin.

And there's all sorts of different fun smells,

whether it's like cedar or coffee.

Or...

Frink and senseless.

It's sort of a popular one right now.

Yeah.

But truly, I mean,

there's a whole bunch of different fun smells

and they look cool

and those are another great stocking stuffer.

Another wonderful one to think about.

And then I just want to make a mention

but we'll probably talk about it more

for our next segment

when we're going to be here before New Year's.

But we have lots of good meats and like shrimps

and different...

Yeah, gluten-free items.

And food and a different dietary restriction thing,

dairy-free.

So if you're wanting to put together a nice

Christmas feast or New Year's feast,

maybe if you need to have some tricky dietary things

you're working with with family members

in town or coming out from town.

We're discovering more and more of those things.

Then hey, you know, every time I have pizza,

I feel sick afterwards.

Oh, turns out I'm lactose intolerant.

Like, there's so many of us in our society

that haven't been tested for these things

or don't know these things

and we've just kind of always put up with them

because they don't kill us basically.

Now we're learning more and more.

So those having a store like your guys is in town

is so key, especially for rural families and families.

They may not live right next door to Madison

or something like that.

Mm-hmm.

Yeah, so it's just a good thing

to think of the gift of health

and all sorts of fun things

and gift certificates are a great way to go to,

but doing a lot of those right now.

So come in, when you come and you'll see a great display

of lots of fun products and ask us a few of questions

about what should I get, what do you think?

And then we really want everyone to join us tonight

because we have a presentation tonight

and we're super excited about it.

It's gonna be at 5.15 today

and it's a mushroom presentation.

It's gonna be great, we've got Jerome coming in.

He grows mushrooms, it's basically his business

just growing mushrooms.

He's formerly a university professor.

So he's always very interesting to talk to,

like basically about anything,

but mushrooms in particular is always get captivated

to talk into him about.

And so he's gonna be there tonight talking about mushrooms.

I'm gonna fill in some little details on mushrooms

to kind of doing as a tag team thing,

but it's always fun when we bring in a guest lecture.

And in this case, it's somebody that's local.

He lives in Steven's point.

We sell his mushrooms at our store.

If you wanna cook some mushrooms tonight for dinner,

you can come to the talk, learn all about them,

take them home and have a nice feast of.

Medicinal health benefits of all these

and know more about mushrooms, how they grow.

And we're hoping to do something too.

We'll see how the timing is with it.

But he wants to do like a sign-up

so you can get like a kit to grow mushrooms yourself.

And you can also, yeah, like a home kit.

And so you could also give this as a gift

if you had somebody who likes doing things themselves,

DIY people, and they like mushrooms.

You could wrap it up in a little box

because it's like it's not growing the mushrooms yet,

but as soon as you kind of open the package in water,

you get it started, then you'll have mushrooms

in a few days' time.

So we're hoping to get some of those from them too.

So you come tonight and you can learn more about that

and sign up if you're looking for a mushroom growing kit.

You can learn about all the health benefits.

There's so many mushrooms are fascinating.

I would start talking about it,

but then like I went nowhere to stop.

And if you don't have enough time for that.

Yeah, you really, you really need to come to the talk

because it's gonna be, you can't fit it all in

in what we have left 10 minutes.

So much of the important and interesting work

going on right now, especially in the world of science,

is with fungi and learning more and more about that.

I, a couple of years back, I saw a special on Netflix,

fantastic fungi, and blew my mind, man.

Just incredible, like how much communication goes on with this.

Under the soil, the communication they have,

and they feed like the trees, nutrients,

like it's a whole system, which is fascinating.

I think it may seem like we're saying this metaphorically,

like, oh yeah, trees talk to each other, man.

Like no, no, they really are actually communicating with it.

Like they're having full blown conversations and everything.

Like the, the mycelium of the mushrooms

are really the communicator for that.

Yeah, they're like the facilitator,

like the phone lines, they're AT&T.

Mm-hmm.

The, we just got, we just got through a time in our,

in our life where we are also in a situation of,

we've got a new disease and we don't know how to combat it.

And that doesn't happen in our society very often.

The work being done on this is really integral to that,

to, to, you know, coming up with new cures for these things.

And those amazing virus hunters around the world

that are, are, are, are, are really fighting for us

for our humanity, doing these things.

All of this stuff comes back to mushrooms

and, and the interesting conversation you could take in tonight.

That is a really cool idea, yes.

We've had a lot of people interested.

I think it's gonna be, it's gonna be a good turnout tonight

and we're really looking forward to it.

So, yeah, 515 tonight, come and learn about mushrooms.

Come on in, yep, yep.

And this is a free event, everyone.

Yep, yep.

We'll have, we'll also have some sales

on some mushroom products too.

So, a good opportunity if, if you like,

purchasing these things or you're just interested

in the topic, either way, come in for it.

I think we'll be, we might have some like,

we might have some free things we can pass around

or some demonstration stuff to last talk we had.

And if we have any, if we have enough of these,

I might give these out too.

We had some little coupons or $10 off Rishi T,

which is wonderful tea, tea company out of Wisconsin.

So, if we have enough of them, we might hand some of those out,

that's what we did last time at the talk.

This is actually like a free tea box.

Yeah, it's basically a free $10 box of tea,

which is great, especially this time of year.

Is this something that we want people to RSVP for or anything?

Or?

No, they don't need RSVP, they can just shop.

Yeah, we've got a lot of chairs, we'll just keep putting them out.

Right, right, right, very cool.

Very cool, very cool.

You're gonna bring your whole extended family

maybe give us a call, maybe nice to know.

Again, that wonderful presentation, 515 tonight,

over at Family Natural Foods,

give you the address before you wrap up.

Guys, I wanted to ask about saffron,

and not just so I could say the word saffron on the air.

It's a fun word to say the word.

It is, for sure.

Yeah, so saffron's a really cool herb

and also culinary spice that many countries use

as a regular thing, but it's strength,

it's power is in brain health and stress, relaxing.

Yeah, it's used for like increasing positive mood.

And it seems like one of the safest,

probably most beneficial things you could use

for people that maybe have seasonal depression

or kind of any kind of sadness this time of year,

especially as it gets darker.

I mean, it seems like we all have that a little bit now and then.

But saffron's been one of the favorite things I've found

because it's a lot of the pharmaceutical medicines

that we know about for depression, for example,

are they have the longest list of side effects

and you have to be very careful about getting on

and off them, all this kind of stuff.

And they certainly play an important role

for some people with severe depression,

but there's places, like in Europe or around the world

where they'll prescribe these natural herbal formulas

with clinically studied herbs,

which is the case of this product we have in front of us here,

for mild to moderate cases of depression, anxiety,

stuff like that.

And it works really great with basically no list of side effects.

We've had teens taking it and they have really good success

with it.

It's just a cool product.

So it's a Terry product, which we love Terry,

which also means it's unsafe.

And it also has a little bit of the Krakumin to American it,

which is great for brain inflammation

and lots of other health benefits.

There's a lot of recent research that says

that depression's coming from inflammation in the brain.

And not a lot of things can cross the blood brain barrier

as far as helping affect or inflammation,

but Krakumin can this one's been researched too.

With the rise of us paying more attention

to our mental health, there's certainly a lot more people

caring about that and trying to assist our brains,

if you will, and help out with that chemical imbalance,

sometimes, or those things.

And where he used to be, not even just 10, 15 years

ago, if that was the case, you go to a psychotherapist

or something and has to be prescribed on something

and you're getting prescribed pill or something like that

with about a billion side effects.

I know this because that was my high school years

to be spent trying these different things

and finding something that's sort of worked.

But then you know, I got to wait two weeks to see

if it actually impacts me and then there's a side effects

blah, blah, blah and all this.

The side effects from this is, there you go.

That's it, everybody.

I mean, I can give you some nice side benefits.

Right.

This also helps stop stress eating.

So if you find that maybe you gain weight

because you're always eating related to stress eating,

here's a side benefit that this one has.

Another group that actually has gotten a lot of great

results with this is people with ADD, ADHD.

So it helps kind of focus the brain a little bit.

And there's somebody that works at a store

who's had ADD, ADHD and she's like,

this is like her go-to.

She said it works so good.

And I just figured, especially if you're one of those people

who has a couple of these overlapping things,

here you go, one bottle, 20% off for the rest of the month

here, really phenomenal.

Safron's a great product.

I literally will be over there to pick that up.

Like everything you were saying, I'm realizing is,

we're talking, wait a minute, wait a minute,

that's a check, that's a check.

Okay, yeah, actually I might be able to be,

I make a million views of that.

Money back guarantee.

So what else can you say with that?

Well, with the side effect thing I was mentioning there,

that's the plus with this.

We can't guarantee that every one of these things

is going to work for everybody out there,

but we can guarantee that you don't want it

those side effect kind of things.

You try, it doesn't work.

Well, not only was it 20% off if you get it right now,

but you know, harm no foul.

I mean, you just keep moving and trying something else

maybe or something.

But if it works, that is a game changer right there.

And you deserve to be happy.

You deserve to feel good in these things.

Guys, thank you so much for the time.

I want to remind everybody again about the presentation

tonight, what time is it?

515 at Family Natural Foods, 910 West Grand Ave

with Scouts and Rapids.

Stop by and say hi to the gang force.

Always appreciate talking with you guys.

Yes, yes.

If we don't see it,

happy holidays to you and yours.

Enjoy yourselves.

We'll talk next year.

Yeah, thanks a lot.

Yeah, we'll be back with more Midday Magazine right here

at WFHR, locally grown radio.
