Filney's blog, without further ado, let's bring on Philip J. Knee.
As summer vacation started in 1980, I was busy cultivating corn on my farm wall super-sea.
To break the monotony, I would daydream about many unrealistic things.
Perhaps some young ladies would drive by and stop and ask me to go to the lake with them.
Perhaps some
Hollywood filmmaker would just happen to notice me and decide to cast me in the movie adaptation of the comic strip Funky Winker Bean.
If Pat Benatar's tour bus went by the field and she saw me, would it be love at first sight?
As you can realize, the hot sun and the exhaust from the tractor's muffler affected my thought process.
Sound cancelling headphones had not been invented yet.
It was difficult to hear music through the white ear plug that came with my Panasonic tape recorder.
I could not use one hand to push the earpiece deeper into my ear while steering with the other hand and raising the cultivator at the end of the roll.
I did not want to wipe out a bunch of corn stalks.
Dad would not be happy.
He caught me once or twice at the end of the row.
I would lay down under the tractor and make it look like I was cleaning off the cultivator shovels when actually I was laying in the dirt taking a nap.
Mother would often say if that kid would get to bed one night he might be more work brittle.
So I looked up work brittle this week, it says, and I quote, it's an adjective meaning industrious or diligent, though it has a long history of also meaning unwilling to work, depending on context.
It is a compound of work and brittle and is considered obsolete in most contexts.
Well, so am I on some days.
The summer of 1980 had some really cool tunes.
Some of my favorites coming from the radio were,
coming up by Paul McCartney, brass in pocket, the pretenders, steal away Robbie Dupree, train in vain, the clash, another brick in the wall, Pink Floyd.
We live for love, Pat Benatar.
You may be right, Billy Joel.
All night long by Joe Walsh and Gimme Some Lovin' by the Blues Brothers.
My friends and I could not wait until we saw the Blues Brothers movie that summer when it finally came to the Eskin Theater in Richland Center.
We spent the next two years repeating the lines.
We have both kinds of music.
country and western.
Are you the police?
No, ma'am.
We're musicians.
We're on a mission from God.
That movie is still one of my favorite comedies of all time.
Tonight, I'll be taking your request.
I'll spin a few from my misspan youth.
And from all the generations of tunes we play, including the 50s through the mid 90s, audience participation makes the show.
I love to hear from you with requests from the talk and text line.
Keep it tuned to WRCO FM 100.9, wrco.com and the Civic Media app.
If you stay up too late, you can always take a nap the next day in your cornfield.
And maybe you'll be work brittle.
I tell you what, it's a fun time.
Between 9.15 and 9.30 every Saturday morning we bring in PJ Knee, Philip Knee.
We have Phil's blog and he always shares a funny story from his childhood there on Aubrey and also always previews what's coming up.
On those were the days.
Today no exception and it was another good one.
We're at 67 degrees.
We're going to take a really quick time out when we come back.
More of your calls as we have now moved past the halfway point of today's show.
Still plenty of time to get you on the radio.
at 608-647-4155.
More calls after we check in with Jamie.
