Thanks ever so much for making us a part of your weekend to get together
on this Saturday, February 14th Valentine's Day, 918 as we travel back in
time, we bring on Phil. We're going to think about 1978. And this is
something he can blog about. Youngsters today cannot imagine having to call
a friend and talking to that friend's parents. First, even worse, if
you talk to someone you had a crush on, everyone in the house could hear
it. And all the families on the party line had access to your
conversation as well. Luckily, we had a phone with a very long cord. I
could stretch it to the other side of a metal filing cabinet and tuck my head
behind it. That way I could have a bit of privacy. You like pop rocks?
Yeah, me too. Sometimes mother would interrupt to make sure that I was not
on a long distance call. I had friends that lived just a couple of miles away,
but they had a bare valley number. And that would cost an extra 75 cents for
the monthly phone bill. Anyone with a 585, Ithaca number got a raw deal.
If you had a 647 Richland Center number, you could call free to bear
valley. We live closer and could not. What an injustice that was.
In the spring of 1978, my mom would buy me a Western style leisure suit for
the eighth grade graduation. Luckily, no photos of that still exist. When
I wasn't playing junior high basketball or bothering the young ladies in my
class on the phone, I was listening to the radio, my new Panasonic stereo with
AMFM cassette recorder and BSR turntable was always ready. I was making
mix tapes and taping favorite songs off the radio. Our comedy troupe known as
Marty and the corn dogs were getting together on Sundays to record future
classics, such as Ronnie had an accident, chicken or brave, and Majesky has to go.
Some of these recordings still exist, but will never be released in case some
of the group members wish to someday run for a political office.

The area girls wrestling regional was held last night at Richland Center High School.
There were nine teams involved in the tournament at Richland Center's High School Field House
and Kikapula Farge Youth Initiative emerged with a team trophy by a four-point margin
over runner-up Richland Center. Kikapula Farge Youth Initiative with 189 points Richland Center
had 185. Perry D'Shean took third with 141.5, DeSoto and Bosca Belwazika Stuban tied for fourth
with 93 points followed by Verokul with 72 North Crawford Seneca 60 Westby 54 and Ithaca
Weston with 26 nine teams involved in that tournament Friday night at Richland Center High School.
As far as individual qualifiers for next weekend's mineral point sectional, Richland Center led
the way with six. Perry D'Shean and Kikapula Farge Youth Initiative with four of peace and two girls
each qualified for the sectional from Bosca Belwazika Stuban, from North Crawford Seneca,
Verokul, DeSoto and Westby. Here's how things went on Friday night at 100 points, a champion
senior Kayleigh Spilde of Richland Center runner-up from Bosca Belwazika Stuban, Jr. Ali Jalenik.
At 107 points, a champion was Peyton Sander of Bosca Belwazika Stuban, second place to Kylie
Clum of Westby, a three-time state place winner. At 114, the champion Kayleigh Langdon of
Prairie D'Shean runner-up Millie Vaz, a sophomore from Kikapula Farge Youth Initiative.
Senior Madeline Muller of Richland Center, a state qualifier a year ago, takes a title at 120
over Aspen Gilo, a state qualifier last year from Prairie D'Shean. The 226-pound
champ is Hannah Ingham of Prairie D'Shean runner-up Junior Mariah Obday of Richland Center.
Senior Abigail Williams of the Hornets took first place at 132 over Maddie Townsend of
Kikapula Farge Youth Initiative. She is a junior. Junior Chloe Walter of Kikapula Farge Youth
Initiative takes first at 138, Alina Hassan Hansen of Verokwa is the runner-up. At 145 Harper
Gagas of North Crawford, Seneca, a junior takes the title runner-up Senior Valerie Fauver of Richland
at 152, junior Annabelle Shlome of Richland Center takes the top spot.
Ellie Trichestad of Verokwa is runner-up. At 165, Brittany Pesci of Prairie D'Shean takes the
title. She was third at the state tournament three years ago. The Lonnie Rodgers of DeSoto,
the runner-up. Adrianna Logue of North Crawford, Seneca wins at 185 over Cassidy Edkins of DeSoto,
and Katie Durst of Westby takes the title at 235, senior Riley Greffi of Kikapula Farge Youth
Initiative is for her second. Repeating six wrestlers from Richland Center go on to state
to the sectional, I should say, Kaley Spilde, Madeleine Muller, Abigail Williams, Annabelle Shlome,
Mariah O'Day and Valerie Fauver qualify for the mineral point sectional next weekend.
Four wrestlers from Kikapula Farge Youth Initiative, Chloe Walter, Milly Vaz, Riley Greffi and
Maddie Townsend. Two wrestlers from Basquebel, Wazika Stuben, Ellie Jalenik and Peyton Sander,
and two from North Crawford, Seneca, Harper Gagas and Adrianna Logue. Again, Kikapula Farge Youth
Initiative takes the title. I have four point margin over runner-up Richland Center
at the Richland Center girls wrestling regional on Friday night for WRCO Sports, I'm Bill Twining.
In girls high school basketball action from last night, it was Richland Center at River Valley
and WRCO's Filney was there. River Valley picked up a win 74-36 over Richland Center
in area girls basketball. The Black Hawks put out a 13 to nothing run in the first half
and led 43-26 at the break. Leading the way for River Valley on senior night was one of their
seniors, Brooklyn Stokes, with 30 points, 15 for Brooklyn White, 9 by Belladavini, 8 for
Ella Myers, 6 points scored by Ella Hillabrand, and a total of two points each for Heidi Hegglin,
Anna Birchfield and Kylie Smith. Leading the way for Richland Center with 11 points,
Jory Schultz, 8 for Kylie Burns, 4 points for Ava Martin, also, Ella V Weiss at 6 points,
3 points for Ella Clements, 2 each for Taylor Wirtz and Addy Board. Richland Center made two
three pointers, both from the hands of Jory Schultz, they were 10 of 19 from the free throw line.
River Valley made 6, Belladavini had three three pointers, Brooklyn Stokes with 2,
Ella Hillabrand with 1, and the Black Hawks 14 of 21 from the free throw line.
River Valley won the JD-1 game 50 to 21. With the loss, the Horns are now 3 and 19 of the season,
and 0 and 9 in the Southwest Conference. For River Valley, they improved to 14 and 8,
5 and 3 in the conference. They will play at Belladaville on Tuesday night. Richland Center will have a
home contest, non-conference tilt with Wisconsin Heights. Once again, the finals from River Valley

It's sectional wrestling Saturday around the state as the WIA begins a new qualifying
structure for the state wrestling tournament to be held in two weeks. Individual
sectionals are held in all three divisions, and today's qualifying will feature the top two
wrestlers in each way class, moving on to the state individual tournament, and the top six
teams in each sectional qualifying for next weekend's team sectional tournament.
For Area Division I schools, most teams will be involved in the deforested sectional,
although Holman will make the long trip to Monámini for a sectional there.
Division I teams qualifying will move on to team sectionals at Verona and at Marshfield
next weekend. Division II schools in Southwest Wisconsin will compete in sectionals today at
ASEO Fairchild and at Richland Center. Traveling to ASEO will be Area Teams, Adams Friendship,
Arcadia, Black River Falls, GET Mail Rosemondoro, Maustin Nacita, Nacusa Port Edwards,
Watoma Wild Rose, West Salem Bangor, and Wisconsin Dells. Their team sectional next weekend
will be at Black River Falls. The Richland Center sectional today has 16 teams involved,
including four that have traditionally competed in the Division I field, Baraboo,
Monhorabarnaville, Redsburg, and Stoughton. Joining them today will be host Richland Center,
River Valley, Dodgeville, Sugar River, Belmont Plateville, Broadhead Judah, Cubicity Benton
Southwestern, Monroe, Portage, Phenomorum, and Perennial Power Houses Lodi and Evansville.
The top six teams today will qualify for the Lodi team sectional next Saturday.
Individually, the top two wrestlers in each way class will qualify for the state tournament in
two weeks. In the Richland Center sectional alone, there are 21 wrestlers with state tournament
experience, including former state champion Shane Rashan of Dodgeville,
reigning champions from Evansville, Colin Frye, and Colton Bolig, and three-time state champion
Hawken Peterson of Dodgeville. A pair of three-time state place winners is also in the field today,
Dylan Wigel, a Belmont Plateville and Eli Leonard of Monhorabarnaville.
Two-time state qualifiers in the Richland Center sectional today are Nolan Owen of Baraboo,
Gatlin Empey of Stoughton, and Monhorabarnaville teammates Eli Meyer and Hunter Stevens.
Richland Center is led by seniors Ethan Bodendine and Ethan Bindel and River Valley by
seniors Mason Schulte and Blake Brickle. Exactly half of the top rank division two wrestlers in
the state today will be at the Richland Center sectional, Hawken Peterson of Dodgeville,
Evansville's trio of Colin Frye, Colton Bolig, and Liam Crandall, and three more from
Monhorabarnaville, Eli Leonard, Eli Meyer and Hunter Stevens. There were also seven second ranked
division two wrestlers at the Richland Center sectional. Turning to division three,
here's what's happening today, Blair Taylor, Cochran Fountain City, and Independence Gilminton
will compete at the Independence sectional today. The Waterloo sectional includes such
familiar teams as Black Hawk, Shellsburg, Darlington, Beckettoneka, Argyle, and Mineral Point.
The top six teams from the Waterloo sectional will funnel into next Saturday's Mineral Point
team sectional. Most of our areas division three teams today competed the Brookwood sectional
in Ontario, where the 18 team field includes Ithaca Weston, Riverdale, Kickipulafire, Youth
Initiative, Bosca Bell, Wazika Stuban, Iowa Grant Highland, North Crawford, Sennaka, Kilsperl,
Brookwood, Cashton, DeSoto, Royal Money Walk Center, New Lisbon, River Ridge, Verokwa,
and Westby, and Powerhouse teams such as Lancaster, Prairie Dishine, and Aquinas.
The top six finishing teams today advanced to the team sectional at Cashton next Saturday.
Individually, the top two wrestlers in each way class qualify for the state meeting two weeks.
In the Brookwood sectional today, there were 16 wrestlers with state tournament experience,
including reigning state champions Grant Matthews of Riverdale and Jackson Busy of Iowa Grant
Highland. Two more have reached the state finals, but fall in short, Brody Mies of Riverdale,
and two-time state runner-up Tyson Martin of Aquinas. Roger Fliggy of Aquinas is a three-time
state place winner, while Brody Mies of Riverdale and both Jackson Busy and Brock Hinderment of
Iowa Grant Highland have each placed twice at the state meet. Also, Lakota Brewer of Riverdale,
Parker Mills of Cashton, and Whalen Hargrove of Aquinas have all twice for state.
In addition, both Sawyer Swigham of North Crawford, Sennaka, and Marta Sheard of Aquinas
placed fifth in last year's state tournament, among area seniors looking for their first
state tournament birth, or Derek Franson, and Ashton Bennett of Ithaca Weston, Bennett Coder,
and Cody Johnson of Kickapool of Hard Youth Initiative, Ryan McCoy of Hillsboro,
Joe Wetter of Basketball, Wazika Stuben, and Drew Powell of Brookwood.
There are four of the state division three top ranked wrestlers at the Brookwood
sectional today, Sawyer Swigham of North Crawford, Sennaka, Tyson Martin of Aquinas,
and Iowa Grant Highland teammates Jackson Busy and Brock Hinderment. Five more wrestlers today
at Brookwood are ranked number two in the state, Toy Raggots of Lancaster, Aquinas teammates,
Marta Sheard and Roger Fliggy, and the Riverdale tandem of Brody Mies and Grant Matthews.
