And obscure game that we love to play was the one called the last straw.
It involved a plastic camel on wheels.
You loaded it saddlebag with sticks.
And if you were the last one to put a stick in right before he split, you were the loser.
Another favorite was called avalanche.
This involved placing marbles at the top, hoping that the swinging gates would move
in your favor to line up all your marbles.
Young Philip had not learned the rules of good sportsmanship yet.
And would lose his marbles and they would fly around the room
when his sister snickered when he lost.
The game that used to drive me really mad, though, is sorry.
That is not a good game to play for sore losers either.
Fortunately, I grew up a bit and graduated from the kids table when I was about 21
to the big table in which a Euchar game might break out after Sunday dinner.
We had many memorable moments with gravy on the cards.
Other popular card games on the Old Valley farm were dirty clubs, 500,
kings in the corner, and Wahoo.
Basically crazy aids, but the twos are wild cards.
And you say, Wahoo, when you play your last card.
I remember watching many of the big NFL games.
Oftentimes we could watch the first half and then we have to go milk.
We did not have a lot of snacks.
Mom would get a frozen pizza and doctor it up with all kinds of toppings.
School friends and neighbors would stop by if the game was on a UHF station.
There was CBS channel three out of Madison on the VHF side or channel eight out of lacrosse,
which was also CBS, but 15 21 and 27 required a UHF aerial.
The knee family was very advanced in the 70s because we had two antennas.

The Panthers trailed 2624 to the Chieftains at halftime.
In the second half, Riverdale led 3332 when Iowa Grant went on a 17 to nothing run

But fell short for the second time this season

A busy weekend of high school wrestling kicked off last night at Boscobel,
where girls' wrestling teams from the SWAL, the SWC,
the Ridge and Valley, and the scenic Bluffs conferences met
and the annual girls' wrestling clash.
It was won by mineral point with 178 points.
The Lancaster girls were second with 130,
followed by Prairie DeSchean 101,
fourth place Richland Center 91 and a half,
and Kikapula Fierge rounded out to top five with 81.
One point ahead of Dodgeville from the area River Valley was seventh with 63 points.
Area place winners for Richland Center a pair of champions, both seniors Kaley Spildi
at 100 pounds and Madeline Muller at 120.
Meanwhile, senior Abigail Williams was third at 132 pounds and Junior Annabelle Shlom
at a third place points at 152.
Junior Mariah Obday was fifth at 126th,
and Senior Valerie Fauver sixth at 145 for Richland Center,
again boasting those two champions Kaley Spildi
and Madeline Muller.
Four Kikapula Fierge Youth Initiative, a bunch of place winners for the team that had 11 wrestlers
competing on Friday night. They were led by Junior Chloe Walty's third place finish
at 138 points, Chloe Walter finishing third, a pair of fourth place efforts from Junior Emerson
Miller at 120 and Beth Gander, a senior at 235, taking fifth Millie Vaz, a sophomore at 107 pounds
for Kikapula Fierge. Ethica Weston had just two wrestlers competing.

Other place winners for Area teams River Valley had a champion sophomore McKenzie

Dodgeville had five wrestlers in the tournament, had a champion in sophomore Jenna Johnson at 138,
and a runner up in Brio Walmer, a junior at 185, a pair of third place finishes from Maya Marcline
and Michaela Lathrop in the light weights for Dodgeville. For the host,
Basquebel Wazika Stuban co-op at the tournament on Friday night, a fifth place finish from Junior
Averoth at 185 and sixth for sophomore Ali Joleneck at 100 pounds. Iowa Grant Highland had four
wrestlers in the tournament, boasted a champion at freshman Rowan Altman, and a runner up in
sophomore Maria Schaefer, and for Mineral Point, the champion point is quite a day for Mineral Point
at the tournament on Friday night. They were led by a pair of champions in senior Dalyne
Collins, a two-time champion now at 132 pounds, and Junior Emily Heisner at 165, runner-up finishes
for Tatum James and Lillian Heisner, and four third place wins for Mineral Point on Friday night,
Abbey Finley, Riley Reikling, Rachel Heisner, and Hayley Yeager as a pointer swept to victory.

The 19th annual Scenic Ridge and Rivers Conference Wrestling Tournament will be held today at North
Crawford High School in Gays Mills, as 13 teams vie for the tourney title one a year ago for the
first time by DeSoto. DeSoto Pirates won the Scenic Ridge and Rivers event last year by upending
defending champion Royal Waniwak Center, while Ithaca Weston, which had won the title in both
2022 and 2023, finished third. Brookwood and Kickapoodle Farge Youth Initiative finished 4th and
5th respectively. Those teams all return along with North Crawford Seneca, Hillsboro,
Cashden, New Lisbon, Packetanica Argyle, and River Ridge. In addition, there is a new entry in the
field this year, a triop from Blackhawk, Schullsburg, Warren Illinois. Senior Lucas Orloff of Packetanica
Argyle headlines the individual wrestlers today as he seeks to join Rare Company as a four-time
conference champion. A year ago Orloff breathed through the Scenic Ridge and Rivers tournament and
all the way to the state finals, finishing with a 56 and 3 record and earning a state runner-up
medal at 126 pounds. There were six other returning champions in today's tournament, Ashton Benet
of Ithaca Weston, Ryan McCoy of Hillsboro, Bennett Coder of Kickapoodle Farge Youth Initiative,
Drew Powell of Brookwood, Dalton Lion of New Lisbon, and Kaden Mikkelson of Cashden. Also
former champion Trenton Fry of Royal 1-E-Walk Center hopes to return to the top of the podium
after a third place finish a year ago. Among those who play second last year are Derek
Franzen of Ithaca Weston, Gavin Wilkins of North Crawford Seneca, Emerson Murray of Royal 1-E-Walk
Center, DeSoto teammates Keegan Colden and Braden Peterson, and a pair of two-time runners-up,
Parker Millsen of Cashden and Turner Calhoun of Royal 1-E-Walk Center. In addition,
seniors saw your swiggen with North Crawford Seneca missed the Scenic Ridge Conference event last
year, but went on to earn a fifth place medal at the state tournament. Action begins this morning
at 9.30 at the annual Scenic Ridge and Rivers Conference Wrestling Tournament to be held today
