Kamala Harris, moving the 2024 Presidential Election FORWARD

The Paul Revere Show · Sat Jul 27, 2024

Hello, this is Attorney Mark Thompson. This is your Paul Revere Show. This is W-A-U-K-540-AM-101-1-F-M.

You know, we've been trying to push Wisconsin forward for every week. We have a

spectacular set of guests Sarah Harrison running for Assembly District 15

Lewand Bird running for Assembly District 61st District but both had the

opportunity to see Vice President Kamala Harris when she was in town earlier

this week so fire away it was just electric in that room the party the

people that were there have come together so strongly so loudly wasn't it

exciting it was absolutely amazing the energy was just palpable yeah I

honestly I was down kind of in the front by the stage and it was like being in a

mosh pit it was like I was back in college you know I mean it wasn't quite as

much jostling but it was so much excitement and I had the privilege to also take

my 20-year-old daughter and my college intern and they both were just floored by

this amazing event so let's sort of back up and walk through this how long did

you have to wait in the room a long time yeah a long time and the energy still

was yeah right the energy was still high every speaker was fantastic you know

listening to Tammy Baldwin and listening to Tony Evers he just has his way and

Josh call and who else we everybody was so yeah you're not gonna yeah you're

never gonna get tired of listening to those guys so well I'm you know we

were listening to them before president Biden withdrew but what was

different now what was different because you you've heard Tammy Baldwin

before you've heard governor Evers before but what was different I think the

energy went up 150% and everybody is really just so enthusiastic to get

out there and win this election I think we were worried about Joe Biden we

were yeah and what we were hearing in the doors was also that concern can he

do the job is he too old and I think there was a kind of mixed feelings there

was this grief for our beloved Joe Biden because we we all loved him and yeah

like like like like I said a weight lifted off because now we have Kamala Harris

and before the event started everyone she had enough votes to get the

Democratic nomination so the the people are coming together and realizing and

then it's sort of hitting us we're gonna have our first woman president I've

heard comments yeah that it's reminding people especially young people of

oh eight and at the doors there's a difference there's a there's still

confusion about like people are sort of like we can't believe this is all

happened you know and but before we jump to doors I'm gonna hear more about the

room who was there who was in the audience you said you had your daughter so

the younger kids older folks all great was it was a racially mixed yes yes I

would say all factions were represented in that room right right in front of me

there was a little girl she was in third grade and she was just getting tired

of course that's a long time for her but by the time Kamala came she was just

raising her arm and she was rocking it out and then I gave her my Kamala

Kamala sign and then I gave her one of my buttons and she was so on top of the

world but she's also we want her to stand on our shoulders and to see her get

to witness what you know it's gonna be our next woman president watching to

show this little girl that women can do it women can do it yeah and I believe it

was spontaneous that the wave broke out like they were doing the wave around

the perimeter of the gym in the stands I mean I've never seen that a political

effect before it was cool it was cool a lot of legislators yep governor Doyle was

there a lot of people in the room I think seem it's to me with a fun listening

there a lot more though just just folks yes I mean I heard that people drove

from all over the place just to be in the room yep I know for sure that at

least at least one person had driven from yeah all the way across the state

because I was talking to them I don't know exactly where but they it's that

they'd been in the car for you know five hours there was a group of women and

I'm not sure where they all came from a bunch of African-American women that I

heard were in Kamala's sorority and they were there and they were getting

their picture taken as I was leaving so I mean there were a lot of different

I guess reasons for people to come and celebrate and listen to listen to

Kamala we had to hear from her what's her vision for America so before we get

to the her vision and her comments a little bit more about the energy and

the enthusiasm anything about this speech or this this grouping that strikes you

or stands out I mean you folks have been to a lot of different rooms I think

Luan said it best earlier when we were talking a lot of people didn't realize

how much stress and pressure we were feeling until it was lifted and once it

was lifted it was jubilation right we are ready to go attack this full force

I'm getting goosebumps just talking about that's that's how I kept feeling to

like goosebumps and then more goosebumps and then more you know the more people I

saw the more hugs the happier everybody felt it was and loud I it I've never

heard something that I actually had to plug my ears a little bit it was so loud

in there yeah it was amazing so president Biden freed everybody it sounds

like in the sense of great relief and hope yes and I hope that we're going to

win in November and not lose absolutely well yeah go ahead well I was just

at this is this is um absolutely causing effect typically when we go out and do a canvas

we'll get for for my area I'll get you know maybe 10 or 12 people and we have 24

people sign up for this weekend so it instantly doubled our number of volunteers

because they want to get out there and they want to talk to people people are it is

difficult to get people to volunteer to do that but they are feeling really

passionate they want to get out there and have those conversations we have the same

thing in our democratic organizer so many people signed up that day I also want to

mention my phone kept going off yeah the last two days with donations because I'm on this

old group and it's just hasn't stopped most of them are little donations because I think

people are trying to figure out what they can do to help yeah and this is one thing they can do

is donate to a state and they're from over the country but donate to a state that is the pathway

to the presidency so Wisconsin is important without a doubt ground zero and here we are

in the middle of the state Walker Shaw County ground zero ground zero

Sarah Harrison Lewand Bird at the rally speech by Kamala Harris kicking off the campaign

what did the vice president say Sarah that really struck you same question coming up for you Lewand

one of the things that really stuck with me was that she had a very humble approach in terms of

she was very grateful to president Biden and talked about that he has achieved more in one

term than many presidents ever achieved in two terms and that she wanted to earn the right to

be that nominee and that she was sharing that she had you know the votes to get there but it was

not at all a message of follow me it was a message of let's do this together it was a unifying

message well I love two things one when she talked about which kind of America do you want and she

was very clear about the difference between you know what we want for the working class or do we

want the rich to get richer and you know she had a list of those things but what really struck me

was when she said you know I was a prosecutor for a number of years and she said I know what

an abuser looks like I know what a cheat looks like I know what a criminal looks like I know

what Donald Trump looks like and it's like we have a prosecutor now running against a convicted

felon and if it it's just such an easy choice now and it wasn't before but now it's easy that's

what that's how I came away from this like this is going to be easy to talk about you know she's

also worked on climate change change she was the deciding vote in the Senate for several big bills

that were passed this year she's got a great record to talk about and it's so in contrast with

with somebody who talks about groping women and tries to take over the capital because he loses

and you know the things he's done inside mocking people with disabilities it's so unacceptable

for America to have someone like that at the top it's just we can't let that happen

and I've also gotten contacted by three countries in my race and political came and knocked on

doors with me when the RNC was in town because they wanted to hear what voters were having to say

so that the the tone at the doors has completely changed and so they came but all about what's

really powerful to me is to hear from a friend in Germany now because Germany put out a story

about our race and about how important it is to them because if Trump gets elected they're worried

about what Putin's going to do over there and so it the importance of like me just knocking on these

little doors here and winning in our little districts and yet the impact that has on the state

and on the nation and now in the world it's it's really become important I have a I had a greater

sense of urgency before but it just I don't know how but it can even be greater now. Lewand bird running

assembly district 61 it's not a little district okay it's not a little district each vote is

crucial every district is crucial Sarah Harrison assembly district 15 you know you two are running

and seats that are not blue right now and this energy how's it going to impact

more this is Attorney Mark Thompson this is your Paul Revere Show this is WAUK 540 AM 101.1 FM

this is Attorney Mark Thompson this is your Paul Revere Show I am honored and privileged to have

Sarah Harrison the Democratic candidate for the assembly district 15 which is a red district

now hopefully going to be blue and November I shouldn't say hopefully after the energy change

it's going to be blue Lewand bird 61st district again trying to take a red district blue

you know we're talking about the enthusiasm that that came with vice president Kamala Harris' visit

and the the new burst of energy and Lewand you were talking about even that getting

contacted by folks from Europe you were saying something I had Germany contacted me they wanted

they did a story right when the RNC was in town I had Spain tried to find a time they're still

gonna try and then I had people from Japan follow me around for a day on the doors because it's

so important to the world what happens in America they're looking to us for leadership and the

title of the story that the wonderful reporter from Germany put out was you know like Lewand's

not gonna let hate win and I thought that was that was a message that resonated with people in

Germany so I got a message from a gentleman or from a woman I think we've been emailing back

and forth and I said you know you give me this global perspective it's wonderful to hear from you

and then she said regarding the global perspective I wonder whether that is something you might like

to stress more with your team of supporters this election is not just about America if America lowers

its emissions less people in Bangladesh will be washed away in floods if America gets right behind

Ukraine all of Europe will feel less anxious if America shows the courage to tax the rich the other

countries will follow and that's such a great message for me and for all your listeners to know

that if you're sitting out there and you're you're sitting back this election it might be time to

get involved because we matter what we do matters not just to us but to the world and it's also

very important to future generations so talk tell me more about how this energy has impacted

the doors for you Luan it's completely changed it was one set of doors and then

the debate hit then it was another set of doors and then there was the shooting and then people

were slamming their doors you know so my poor our voters have gone through a lot and then all of

a sudden to have this opportunity people are feeling energized the fear now is just simply will people

vote for a woman but I'm hearing the doors are ready my our people in our districts are ready to

vote for a woman it's no big deal because she's so qualified to be president so that's what I'm

experiencing at the doors actually I'm experiencing it the streets I'm experiencing it when I'm checking

how to grocery stores people are talking about it everywhere so yeah it's really been positive it's

much easier and like Sarah and I were saying we didn't realize how hard it was to knock doors

before and try to convince people that Joe Biden is our guy we all love Joe Biden by the way and

there is still a grieving process going on there yeah but right it's much better yeah what's

happening on your door before it was very doom and gloom it was I'm picking the it was I did not

see it this way but a lot of other people said it was kind of the the best of two I don't want to

say two evils but you know what's the best of these two not great choices was how a lot of folks

were seeing this and now people are not just voting against Trump they're excited to go out and

vote for Kamala that's a whole different energy are you sensing at any level you know it's curious

on Trump's pick for VP anybody talking about JD is anybody matter it has to come up on my doors I

got to be honest you know because I think they went they tried to do a youth factor right I'm in

a generational shift did you see it at all the way no no the conversations in my circles though

were like he's so not dynamic and he's just like Trump maybe he's worse that's what I'm hearing

so no there was no positive effect in that pick that I heard from anybody and I'm not

Republican doors so yep I'm not hearing a lot of enthusiasm I'm glad you're knocking on Republican

doors we have to in our districts but yeah but I think people this idea of selective campaigning

I think there's great limitations well and when I'm on a door and as someone says you know

historically I vote Republican to me I'm not running to only represent the people who vote for me

I still want to know what's on your mind I want to know what's happening I want to represent

everyone in the district so I still want to have that conversation even if we don't see eye to eye

on everything and I'm the big guy I want to bring civility back and I want people to be able to

have political conversations that don't have that hate behind them or fear or anger let's just

talk about what's important because it's it's my experience that we have more in common than we do

not so having conversations doesn't matter what party for me it's just people that are really

dug in Republicans that are harder to talk to so this enthusiasm that has come with our new candidate

and you know I think there I think there's comfort with the president Biden sitting there and he's

going to see this out and fully support Kamala how's that playing with independence and Republicans

at doors Luanne I mean when you talk to them you see their response different

they liked Joe Biden their concern they don't like Trump the most Republicans I'm talking to

at the doors are not in favor of Trump but to vote for Joe they just weren't sure I think because

of his age but I do think that they will and it's only been a day two days of knocking doors so

I think that I anticipate it'll be let's just put it say it'll be interesting to see what they'll

do now because they don't have that that too old thing to think about they're going to have to

think about do they want a young dynamic prosecutor who's been very successful at representing

the little guy and taking care of average people who's not about making the rich get richer will they

will they buy into that I'm certainly character wise she's you know there's no comparison

she's got a wonderful how about you Sarah what do you see him I mean similar where folks who are in the

in the undecided world which to me kind of blows my mind that you could be undecided at any point

in this um particular cycle but uh you know that a lot of people just want to live right I suppose

and they're busy working yeah and they're not you know like you thinking about politics and just

this every 30 seconds that's fair so the no no but it I think it is it's you know some

there there's a freshness you know I sense that we have a short election this is the

turning mark Thompson this is your Paul Revere show Sarah Harrison and Lewand bird talking about the

new boost energy november is going to be exciting

you

hello this is attorney mark Thompson this is your Paul Revere show we are here

every week moving Wisconsin forward on WAUK 540 AM 101.1 FM civic media statewide

I'm delighted to have Sarah Harrison as Democrat running for assembly district

15 which is now read and hopefully be not hopefully folks it's going to be blue

Lewand bird from assembly district 61 again going to turn that district bloop they were sharing

their experience at the speech and rally for vice president Kamala Harris and the best producer in

the world Jess has got some highlights to share with all of us oh absolutely should we start with

just checking in on the energy there huh I think that would be a beautiful start all right

so Wisconsin I am told as of this morning that we have earned the support of enough delegates

to secure the democratic nomination

oh that's energizing to hear for real for real what else you got well let's do a little comparison shall we

so Donald Trump is relying on support from billionaires and big corporations

and he is trading access in exchange for campaign contributions a couple of months ago you all

saw that a couple months ago at Marilago he literally promised big oil companies big oil lobbyists

he would do their bidding for one billion dollars in campaign donations

for real but you know Sarah Lewand I'm I'm confident you haven't had any set

downs with billionaires throwing money your way for like how are people responding to you know

Trump's just straight-up approach I'm going to represent billionaires and really not the public

well the folks who are aware of it are flabbergasted and offended by it I don't um we have to

keep telling people that this is happening because not everyone is aware right um but once people

are aware of these promises that are being made it it's horrifying to people and there's another

way to fund a campaign right small donations are fantastic well yeah let's listen to this

look grassroots on the other hand we are running a people-powered campaign

and we just had some breaking news we just had the best 24 hours

of grassroots fundraising in presidential campaign history

all right so you can make a difference yeah you can make a difference with your donations they

matter they matter a lot and I think I heard your voice in that the screaming there I'm sure you

did and you post the goosebumps have not gone away yet they just keep like piling on top and on

top yeah but you know might the Trump voters I talked to don't don't really want to face reality

they're sold out and that's just a small fringe group of the Republican Party it's not the ones

in the middle that really get what Trump's about you know and now they've got a choice they've

got someone good that they can vote for so my job our job going to doors is to make sure we know

enough about Kamala to talk about it and there are some great things that that are different

about her that Joe Biden didn't have so you know I had to do quick research on that and make sure

that I understood how important she was in some of these decisions and in her former work so I'm

sure Jess has something for us there no I do before I was elected vice president before I was

elected the United States senator I was elected attorney general of the state of California and I was

a courtroom prosecutor before then and in those roles I took on perpetrators of all kinds

predators who abused women fraudsters who ripped off consumers cheaters who broke the rules

for their own gain so hear me when I say I know Donald Trump's type

that's the kind of leader we need that's what people want they want someone who's authentic they

want someone who's proven proven record and Kamala has all of that yep that was just an amazing

moment the whole the whole room just exploded because it was just believe me when I tell you I mean

it was so earnest and just she's real well and she's been out working hard for women's rights

for a long long time long time she's got a long record a long history of doing that and actually

before this came up I went to one of her rallies a couple months back in right here in Waukesha

and she was out just talking about what's happening to women since Roe v Wade got overturned so

that's what we also need we need a champion of women's rights a champion of voting rights a champion

of gun safety laws she's got all of that and she's got that world view having worked with Joe Biden

for the last four years she's you know gained that experience got something for us there Jess

oh yeah oh yeah and we who believe in reproductive freedom

will stop Donald Trump's extreme abortion bans because we trust women to make decisions about

their own body and not have their government tell them what to do

that's a big issue at the doors absolutely yep my assumption is that still the biggest issue

yeah oh yeah I had a lady today she says I said you know I'm introduced myself and I said what

is it you care about she says I have two daughters I said we're on the same page yep okay bye

yeah and Kamala Harris yep she's in you know I mean it's really an easy choice now there's no doubt

there's no doubt in people's minds it has been great you know I think you know we look back

and we had these terrible maps and you know we together you know we had a new justice

win by 11 points and women in youth ran it drive right and because that we have new maps

and because of that I have Lewin Bird here who's going to win at the 61st Sarah Harrison's

going to win at the 15th but you're going to win with the help of young people and women

who now are volunteers volunteers are well knocking doors right energize they are

but I want to correct you on something mark this district is purple it's only 50.8

Republican there you go that's so good it's purple it is not red Wisconsin's purple it's purple

everywhere if you pull it man you stole my line at the end preaching purple right it's purple well

do you mean that when you district appropriately actually it's more representative of the people

wow what a shocking revelation isn't it you got anything else from this rally oh sure yeah what you

want hit it we will finally pass red flag laws universal background checks and an assault weapons band

gun safety yes I hear about that a lot gun regulations you know you would think especially after

the attempted assassination you know in the in the murder of you know Cory who was just trying

to save his family that there would be an openness to finally stand it up so you see that changing

at the doors well Bob Donovan signed on to the red flag laws right and because no that has not

changed at the doors crime and violence safety is a top issue and if people don't feel safe in

their streets or safe in their homes or safe that they can protect their family from a gun that's

the top issue Bob Donovan signed on to the he's my opponent by the way he signed on to the red flag

laws but then recently in the news which law it's a law where you can take away a gun from a family

member or a police can take a gun away from someone that's gonna harm themselves or someone else

temporarily until they get the treatment that they need the mental health treatment right he

was calling that nonsense in the news this week so that's what we're gonna get with the

Republican agenda and so if we want the safety and we want women's choice and we want good public

education all the things Kamala talked about all the things at the local level we can we can

we need to vote for the for Kamala we need to vote for Democrats up and down we stand for what

the people want yeah I mean time after time we've seen in polling that the general public supports

gun safety measures but the Republican Party will not vote in that way because they're in the

pocket of the NRA and that includes people at every level of of the organization so if we want

change we're gonna have to elect it so I just at vice president Harris say anything about visions

two visions she did she did I thought I recalled hearing something about that what she's saying

this campaign is also about two different visions for our nation one where we are focused on the

future the other focused on the past to get into the specifics of what those are I think that

would be perfect but Donald Trump wants to take our country backward he and his extreme project 2025

agenda will weaken the middle class like we know we got to take this serious thing can you believe

they put that thing in writing so if your listeners haven't read that they might want to or look

at a summary of what that is because they want a dismantle government as we know what they want to

get rid of all civil servants and make them appointed by partisan by the partisan leaders and that's

not what our democracy is based on so when you're going door to door talking to people where do you

tell them to go find out about 2025 nobody really brings that one up it's but but what's happened is

I mean we're hearing it more and more we are hearing it more and more and that the doors

it's just it's just not brought up I'm only there for you know the short time to introduce myself

and talk about what's important so I don't hear that as much but boy in my circles it's it's

everywhere now and we're becoming aware of the threat and the more we let the public know like

you said that this is the threat this is we're up against what we're up against this is what we

can do to stop it this is how and now we have a great person that you don't have to be afraid to vote

for right right you know likely I was saying a big part of project 2025 is replacing

civil servants with people who are loyal to the person appointing them not loyal to serving

the American public and I believe Ben Wakeler just said if you if you don't know project 2025

Google it and that you'll find all the information out there just I think the vice president said

something about the path what she said about the path of this election path to the White House

goes through Wisconsin yes it does we cannot win the White House without winning in Wisconsin

and we cannot flip the assembly without winning in my district so there's a lot at stake

and I think I'm very excited because there's 97 Democrats running in 99 seats and we are

going to talk more about that with Sarah Harrison and Luan Bird who are going to help

transform Wisconsin and Wisconsin democracy keeping Wisconsin moving forward not attorney

Mark Thompson this is your Paul Regear Show

WAUK 540 AM 101.1 FM honored and privileged to have Sarah Harrison that's going to run and turn

assembly district 15 blue Luan Bird is going to run and turn the assembly district 61 blue

in a purple state you know we're talking about the message that the vice president

brought when she was here in West Alice and the energy and the excitement in the room

and she and she talked about you know where which way are we going but she reminded us that Trump

took us backwards I mean Trump promised the American public he would put people on the Supreme

Court and wipe out row and women's right to choose and control the reproductive rights

a rights that existed constitutionally for 50 years right and because of Trump we took this huge

hugely backwards how did you two see this I mean you're both women different generations right so

how does this play out how do you see this top priority for women and we hear it a lot of the doors

and the kind of the upside to this is women are talking about their abortions now

because it is just health care and then all of a sudden they're making you know the government

to come in and make that decision for us and we're not happy about that so you know one lady

her daughter was on my list I knocked on her door and it was Susan and I said you know I'm

this is who I am and what is it you care about and then she says well you better talk to my mom

her mother comes up there her mother's 81 years old she said 51 years ago I had four kids

I had a husband who didn't help and I got pregnant and I wanted to have the surgery she said

and and he wouldn't let me so I divorced him because I could not do it she was a maid

that was her job and I and then her 51-year-old daughter standing there and she looks at her mom

I said how old were you and she says I was the baby that was just I mean born she says I was the

I was the baby and she says my mom is strong those are the stories you hear at the doors you don't know

what women are going through and we've gone backwards so if we don't change these laws women are

having to leave the state only women that have money or are getting help somewhere to get abortions

it's not easy to access them here in the state doctors are not sure that they can actually save

a woman's life there's still uncertainty around all of that and I would not want to see my

daughter in that emergency room sitting at a table and this happened to women right after

Roby Wake out overturned in some states and they are there one woman her water broke at about

14 weeks and the doctor looked at her and said I don't know if you're sick enough for me to do this

even though there was no viable pregnancy there that's the kind of confusion that's

that's backwards my generation we had choice however they've been chipping away at it for years

so now it's time to look at that Sarah your vantage point yeah absolutely so I actually

personally had to have a surgery about six years ago because I had pre-cancerous cells two years

in a row and so I had a hysterexomy and my concern for folks in a world where these rights are

in question is is a doctor going to have to say well no I can't do that for you because what if

you wanted to have a baby I'm taking a viable uterus away and so I'm going to make you live with

the risk of having cancer things like that are not that far-fetched based on some of the stories

we're hearing and that's terrifying what are you hearing from women you know I'm

this does impact women in different ways in men right I mean I appreciate a woman's right but

in terms of the individual decision-making I can only imagine it and I can't sense it but I mean

you know birth control IVF I mean what what are you hearing on this people women are worried that

they're going to lose all of that if Trump gets elected if the Republicans win the White House

be as some the all these houses were in trouble we're going to continue to go backwards they right

now make women wait in this state we haven't gotten our rights completely back wait like 24 hours

so if you come in from a long ways away you got to find a place to stay you know if you're

going to right now because there's very few places you can get an abortion women can't afford that

so yeah absolutely and you hit right on what I was going to say and when you said women can't

afford that it's a very classist thing because folks who have means can still get the services

that they need but the folks who don't have means have no chance where else do you see Trump taking

us backwards let's talk about public education right now you know let's privatize public education

I think that's in the project 2025 Sarah what do you see I well mark I know you're aware that I ran

for the Waukeshau school board and we see a lot of really concerning things happening at a local

level and it's building up at the national level as well and we see things such as that parental

bill of rights and that kind of thing where kids rights to be themselves are being stripped away

so that people can play politics right taking away the right or the conversations teachers need

to have with their students and with their parents they're trying to ban all of that so a couple

minutes a couple minutes what is your spill Luan why vote for Luan 30 seconds same for Sarah

I'm gonna fight for those rights like I did my husband's when he was paralyzed 34 years ago

I'm gonna fight for women's rights workers rights public education there are simple solutions to that

so you should vote for me because you know I'm gonna get things done that matter to the people

not to that party yep so I am a small business owner I am a community advocate and a mother of two

and if those three things don't qualify me as someone who knows how to solve problems and build

bridges I don't know what else would I am here to listen and then lead we're going forward

me and Sarah yeah we are folks forward forward forward forward we have an exciting new

chance right vice president Kamala Harris blew away Wisconsin the energy was amazing

there is real real hope on the horizon remember folks vote August 13th and we don't have time much

but vote no no on the backside on the the the propositions folks this is attorney Mark Thompson this

is your Paul Revere show always moving Wisconsin forward so Wisconsin today I ask you are you ready

to get to work do we believe in freedom do we believe in opportunity do we believe in the promise

of America and are we ready to fight for it and when we fight we win God bless you God bless United States
