Narrator

From Washington to Hollywood and right back to Wisconsin, it's Night Light with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach.

Connecting the dots on the stories shaping our world with smart takes, sharp humor, and plenty of personality.

You know, I really expected more professional behavior from you.

It's news and culture without the noise.

Yeah, I'm on!

Here's Pete Schwabba.

Dude.

And Greg Bach.

Dude!

Pete Schwabba

Welcome to Night Light, ladies and gentlemen.

Hey, happy Thursday, everybody.

Thanks for joining us here as we broadcast live, not quite statewide, but from various parts of the state.

I myself am in northeast Wisconsin and looking across the state at my pal Greg Bach, who is in Radio Park.

See how I got that right, Greg?

I get it right when I say where you are located, but you seem to have trouble.

with my little moniker that I've given

Greg Bach

you.

You're in Marinette, Wisconsin.

Well, that's right.

Well, you're in, you're in Holiday, Jingle Bell, Land, Midwest, USA.

Sure, that works.

Also, the thing too is, is that you're, it's not a cross, well, it's across the state in a sense, but you actually are looking down upon me because you're in Northeast Wisconsin.

That's

Narrator

true.

Greg Bach

And I'm in Southeast Wisconsin.

And in

So I don't know how you would describe Madison.

It's like Southeast Central.

It's like kind

Narrator

of

Greg Bach

like central issues.

It's got SS's of all of them.

A multitude of Genesequa, if you will.

In other words, it's Dom Lee in Madison on the ones and twos here tonight.

That's right.

How are you doing today, Pete?

Pete Schwabba

I'm well, and it's funny what you just said.

I'm looking down at you because I'm in Northeast Wisconsin looking down the state at Greg.

It reminds

Greg Bach

me

Pete Schwabba

of when I watched the Blues Brothers decades ago and the chase that starts at Pier 1 Imports in Milwaukee.

They start in Chicago.

They end up at Pier 1 Imports on the north side of Milwaukee.

They go off 794, I believe, when that was being constructed.

Greg Bach

My

Pete Schwabba

goodness.

And the car fell south in downtown Chicago.

That's kind of the same thing we're dealing with here.

Greg Bach

It's kind of like people forget a lot of times that the Blues Brothers is kind of a Wisconsin movie.

Like there's elements and yeah touches of Wisconsin within it.

We don't talk about that enough.

It's never celebrated as not a Wisconsin movie, but you know, we're part of it if you will.

So, but oh, absolutely.

Well, I'm glad you're having a good day.

Folks, this is a reason to watch the live stream, by the way.

First of all, you can always get in touch with us, 855-752-4842-855-757.

Leave a comment on the live stream or a streaming on Facebook, YouTube, or the platform we call Twitter.

This is one of those moments I'm looking at.

Pete's room right now, his studio, whatever, however you want to call it.

It's just a nice looking area.

It looks like a good place to sit and have a chat, enjoy a discussion about the news, about entertainment.

maybe have a show like ours like nightlight.

I mean, it's just perfect.

It's absolutely perfect.

Pete Schwabba

Well, and it's, it's, uh, and I want to give you a shout out, my friend, because your team, you're probably, uh, representing your, uh, Milwaukee Brewers tonight with a really

Greg Bach

cool

Pete Schwabba

looking jersey.

And they had a big win on opening day.

Dom, I'm sorry.

It didn't work out as well for, for you guys, uh, your South side team from Chicago, but the Brewers, uh, came out with bats a swinging today.

I don't want

Greg Bach

to

Pete Schwabba

talk about it.

I don't want to talk about it.

Greg Bach

It's okay.

Well, I want to talk about it.

So the thing that I really love is

today.

I said this before we went on the air was that I was very upset with Dominic in the very beginning of this game because yesterday, I believe it was, you sort of like shrugged your shoulders and you said, it's the white socks.

You have nothing to worry about.

Nice.

Excuse me.

We got swept by the athletics last season.

So there is nothing.

that's for sure.

But we did come out with bats a blazing and we did the brewers did win 14 to two today, which is a great start to the season.

That doesn't mean anything other than the fact that we've won one game and the Colorado Rockies are officially eliminated from all playoff contentions for this season.

So sorry, Colorado Rocky fans, you knew this was coming.

It's not my problem.

It's your problem to fix your your state and your team.

So

Other than that, other than the baseball, which we'll talk more about with our second hour guests.

Pete, talk about what's going to be on the show tonight.

Do we have an amazing show?

Pete Schwabba

I was hoping you'd ask.

I have to pull up.

This first guest we have in the first hour, Cindy Scappini.

She is a professor of business law at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

She's got, she's one of those guests we have periodically with all these titles, Greg, but I love that they can explain things to us.

Like she's going to explain with prediction markets when she comes by at 535.

You can bet on basically anything folks, wars, rotten tomato scores, all kinds of stuff.

Cindy is going to break that down for us and tell us why that can be dangerous and you know, stop gaps they're making.

And then as Greg mentioned in hour number two, we've got Civic Media Sports Authority.

Mike Clemens will be here to break down the Brewers' win tonight.

I might ask him about the Badgers and what happened last weekend.

But we've got great guests and we've got a lot of...

of other stuff going on.

I think we should get to our question of the night sooner rather than later just so we can get to our contest and our newsworthy things.

What do you guys say?

I think that's a great idea.

Fantastic, let's do

Narrator

it.

Let's talk about the question.

Pete Schwabba

Okay,

Narrator

question.

Pete Schwabba

Question.

Narrator

Question.

Pregunta.

Question.

Pregunta.

Question.

Pete Schwabba

Okay, I have a question.

Questions.

This question.

Domanda.

Question.

Question.

Questions.

Who is the best music duo of all time?

compliments of our music aficionado, Mr. Greg Bach.

Greg mentioned that.

Well, you said music duo or something, and I thought, oh,

Narrator

that make a

Pete Schwabba

great question.

So that is tonight's question.

Who is the best music duo of all time?

You can let us know.

And we hope you do at 855-752-4842, 855-75 Civic.

You can also text us, or you can drop us a stream comment if you're watching the radio on YouTube, Facebook, or ex Twitter.

And if you are listening on the app, you're going to need that anyway for what Greg's about to tell you.

But you can drop us a comment on the app.

Let us know who your favorite music duo of all time is.

That's a fun one.

Greg Bach

Yes, folks, you must have your civic media app for this next portion of the conversation because I'm about to give you the keyword for our break into spring text to win multi-state contest.

So here's how it's going to work is you're going to open up that app.

Go to your favorite radio station if you haven't already favored it, WAUK.

And you're going to text in the keyword for your chance to win $200 plus be put into a grand prize drawing for a brand new mattress set from Verlo.

So you must have the app in order to participate.

You must have the app to text in.

You can't text it in via your regular phone, can't do it on the live stream.

And I've had people try to email or call it in.

So none of those ways, you must have the Civic Media app if you don't have it.

download it right now because it's absolutely free and beyond just the text to win contest.

Oh my goodness gracious.

You can get news, you can get all sorts of great things.

You can listen to programs, whether it's music or talk, but get that app right now.

If you haven't, you have the entire hour to participate.

But for right now, let's get you that keyword for our break in the spring text to win multi-state contest.

And that keyword is timpani's please, timpani's timpani's timpani's.

The word is bike B I K E. The word is bike as an I shall ride my bike because it's so nice outside.

That is the keyword you must text in via the Civic Media app for your chance to win $200.

You'll get another opportunity in the seven o'clock hour and then seven more opportunities tomorrow and tomorrow is actually the last day.

So make sure you get that app.

Text in the word bike B I K E and good luck to you.

We'll talk more about it throughout the hour.

But yep, the word is bike.

Here we go.

You can't win if you don't play.

That's

Pete Schwabba

a great keyword.

You first said the word.

You can't win if you work here too.

True, that's true too.

When you said timpani, I thought you were going that route with the keyword.

I was like, whoa, that's a complicated keyword.

But bike is a good one.

B-I-C.

Greg Bach

B-I-K-E.

It doesn't get any easier than that.

And it's funny because we had to start spelling it because we were getting a lot of misspellings and we would call, we wouldn't call out, like make fun of them.

We would just simply say like, so and so you spelled it wrong.

Go back and try again, please.

We want you to enter.

We want you to win.

But yeah, it's a lot of creative spelling on very what seems to be simple words, but.

I see them coming in right now, Michael and Tosa, Nan and Brookfield, Tom and Hartford, Brian and Southern Wisconsin.

They're all, uh, they're all becoming a part of it.

And I'm loving it.

Loving it.

Pete Schwabba

It's fun.

And we, and they get that extra chance to win too, which is nice.

Uh,

Greg Bach

correct.

Yeah.

That's right.

Folks, if you get a text message back from us saying, Hey, here's an opportunity for an extra entry, go ahead and click through that link.

That's totally safe.

That is a civic media.

You have in the entire two week contest, you have one opportunity to get one extra entry.

So go ahead and take that opportunity, whether it's subscribing to a newsletter, following us on social media, something like that.

But you go ahead and do that.

And that's just one more opportunity to win that $200 and a mattress set from Verlo.

So again, good luck.

The word is bike B I K E Jim from Berkfield.

You are a smart Alec.

And I like your style, sir.

It's like sending the word bicycle.

Oh, that's

Pete Schwabba

not going to do it.

I think Jim knows that he's

Greg Bach

a smart Alec.

As you said, he's a smart

Pete Schwabba

Alec.

That's a very, that's a very parental thing to say, Greg.

He's smart Alec.

You also refer to Dom as Dominic, like he

Narrator

was in

Pete Schwabba

trouble before.

I like that.

Dominic was being a smart Alec regarding his baseball team.

The full government name.

Oh, knock it off, Dom.

SPEAKER_??

Oh my goodness.

Greg Bach

All right.

We've

Pete Schwabba

got some new story.

We got, there you go, Greg.

Two great guests, a fun question.

And now we get to some new stories.

We got to bang out here before we get to our next portion of the show.

The first big story.

Greg Bach

Pete, what is going on right now with Iran and the president?

Seriously.

That's a great question.

I don't even know if he can answer that question, but go on.

Pete Schwabba

But I saw the headline and it's like, he gives them an ultimatum.

It's like,

Greg Bach

that's all

Pete Schwabba

he's been doing.

ABC News reported that at a cabinet meeting, he said, Trump said that Iran is begging for a deal.

when everybody else is saying they just shot down what the president offered, and he's begging NATO to get involved, the group he wants America to leave, it's insanity.

He's really backed himself into a corner here with Iran, and as long as they can keep this sustained whatever it is they're dealing with there, I have no idea, I'm glad I don't know, but bombs and all this kind of stuff, if they can withstand that, I don't see what

Greg Bach

the exit strategy is, do you?

Oh, I don't see an exit strategy.

Well, I mean, I see an exit strategy in as much as they just have to leave because they have no choice.

I mean, we're either going to just have to go in fully and invade the place and do what they possibly did in Iraq or Afghanistan.

But I mean, the thing is, is like, like they don't want to meet with Jared Kushner.

They want to meet with JD Vance.

The president says you have a deadline here.

The things he says, I'm going to extend the deadline.

He says we're in a war.

He says we're not in a war.

He says we've won.

He says we're close to winning.

That's, that ultimately is the biggest problem, Pete, for me is the fact that like, at least, okay, say what you will about the Iraq war.

It wasn't good.

I didn't support it.

Didn't like it.

But at least it felt like there was a mission that was at least sold to the American public.

9-11, Afghanistan, weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein, irate Iraq, at least on paper, you're like, I understand this.

Even if I don't agree with it, I

get what they're trying to do.

This is like they're spinning just a wheel in the, in the oval office every day saying, what do we say now?

15 point plan.

All right.

We'll say there's a 15 point plan and Iran wants it.

And that's what they're, you know, and we'll just shove it down their throats.

Meanwhile, Iran is saying, yeah, no, no, thank you.

Pete Schwabba

It's really strange.

And you referenced, you know, you say what you want about the Iraq war.

I wasn't in favor of that either.

But at least that went through Congress.

This is like,

You

Narrator

know,

Pete Schwabba

you're right.

This is just a willy nilly kind of, and you can't, you know, for a guy who considers himself a negotiating genius and wrote

Narrator

the

Pete Schwabba

art of the deal, I think that's what his book was called.

And he's saying, okay, here's our, here's our proposal.

And they're saying no.

And he's saying, all right, I'll extend it.

Greg Bach

What are you extending?

They don't want it.

This is just like the terrace.

He says, you're going to get 45% terrace.

And they say, oh, yeah.

And he's like, all right, 20%, or nothing, or more, or it really just depends on how he's feeling.

I mean, it really is true.

Everything he talks about, I believe, is who was in his ear last.

So, there is an idea out there that I could be in the Oval Office right now and be like, hey, you should pull out of Iran right now.

It's not very popular.

And let's just, let's get out of there.

And he might say, hey, we might pull out of there and just be done with it.

Cause people aren't like, you know what I mean?

Like, it really depends on who is surrounding him and who is getting in his ear and what they are showing him.

I mean, they show him a sizzle reel.

And for those who don't know, a sizzle reel is basically a best of package clip of videos or news.

They're showing him that to say, this is what's going on and it all looks great.

He thinks it's all sunny over there for them.

So yeah, it's ridiculous.

It's absolutely ridiculous.

Pete Schwabba

All right, we will be back with more ridiculous stuff and a

Greg Bach

lot of

Pete Schwabba

fun stuff too.

Folks, it's

Greg Bach

a great

Pete Schwabba

night here at Nightlight.

It is Thursday night in the beautiful state of Wisconsin.

We are coming right back to talk about two more news stories and then talk some online betting and prediction markets, all kinds of fun stuff.

Mike Clemens in hour two.

It's going to be great.

Glad you're here.

This is Nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach on the Civic Media Network.

Welcome back.

This is Nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach was just looking up a pool man And I did not is it called the pool man or pool man the pool man.

I think it doesn't mean just Chris pine the pool man Okay, this

Greg Bach

is the

Pete Schwabba

kind of information folks you get on this super secret happy fun show if you watch on the stream We

Greg Bach

were just talking a

Pete Schwabba

lot of movie and now it's translated into the actual show

But we are in the middle of our three big news stories of the day.

So without further ado, why don't we get to number two now?

What do you make of this, Greg?

Oh my God, Florida.

What is with that state?

It's like one of our only warm states where it's really warm, tropical even.

And I just don't even want to set foot there sometimes.

Greg Bach

No, I agree.

There's only a few reasons why I would ever go to Florida.

I would go back for Disney.

I love Epcot.

I'm not going to lie.

Cocoa Beach is beautiful.

But, uh, so the attorney general of Florida has made a decree that the NFL must get rid of what's called the Rooney rule.

And the Rooney rule is, uh, which was instituted in 2003, requires each team to quote, do an interview of at least one or more diverse candidates before making a new hire.

Unquote, uh, the, the policy is, it seems like the policy is only applied to head coaching jobs.

And though, I guess it says here, the NFL teams have also used it for other jobs as well.

Since 2009, both general manager and primary football executive jobs require NFL's teams to interview two minority candidates per the NFL's website.

And this just, just burns the grits of Mr. of Mr. J. Utmire.

Wait, was this his first name?

I don't know his first name.

Idiot, Ottmeyer.

James, it is James.

All right, I'm good.

I'm good.

James Ottmeyer, the Florida attorney general says they must do away with this because, you know, folks, white people, we've had so bad for so long.

They're victims,

Pete Schwabba

Greg.

Greg Bach

And

Pete Schwabba

you know, this is so weird.

Here's why I find this really egregious because the rule does not say you have to hire a minority coaching candidate.

It just means you have to interview them.

People are pushing back against that, and it also helps women too.

This is insanity, and this rule actually got Mike Tomlin, I believe, his head coaching job, and he won a Super Bowl.

He went in as the minority token interview, whatever you want to call it.

He got the job, and he's never had a losing season.

In the rule, it's necessary.

I think like there are plenty of unqualified whitehead coaches that get hired.

And why can't you open the door and at least interview more people?

That makes no sense.

The highest number of black coaches, and I got this information from our pal, Stephen A. Smith, who I have trouble listening to, but I'm totally with him on this.

He said the highest number of black coaches has been six out of 32 in a league where there are almost 70% of its players are black.

Greg Bach

So come on.

And in the entirety of the NFL, like the entire history, like we're talking about all the decades it's been around.

Uh, yeah, this is just Florida anti DEI because they just don't, you know, they don't want to just say we're racist outright.

And I'm sure the people in the, in the live stream in the comments where I'm like, no, it's, it is, it is, it's, it's, it's just, it's in your, and you're couching it in the idea of like, this is to be merit based.

Well, they're not just going to be like, Hey, random person who fits into the minority status, do you want to come in and, and, and interview for a head coaching job?

No, they're going to have merit.

or they wouldn't be there in the first place.

So again, and this is a threat.

He says, if they do not do away with this at their yearly meeting, which takes place, I actually think it takes place right now, or no, it takes place next week.

It takes place next week for a few days.

They're going to talk about possible rule changes.

They're going to vote on the Super Bowl.

But if they don't come out and say that the Rooney rule is going away, that horrible racist Rooney rule that there could possibly be

filing charges.

Uh, let's say it says, uh, the Rooney rule violates Florida law.

It must stop because Florida, as you know, is, uh, anti DEI.

It's no DEI there.

There's no.

Yeah.

Nope.

They

Pete Schwabba

are.

And the reason this came up was because minority candidates were being shut out.

Yeah.

And I would love to know the, the number of like Tony Dungey's wanted Superbowl, Mike Tomlin, Lovey Smith's been to a Superbowl.

This rule exists for a very good reason.

And I want to say, I think the NFL has pushed back against the right to a degree, Colin Kaepernick aside.

Since then, they seem to stand up to the right more than a lot of corporations do.

So

Greg Bach

good for them on

Pete Schwabba

that.

Greg Bach

And

Pete Schwabba

yeah, we'll see what happens.

But I think it's just an interview.

It's such a stupid thing to be upset about.

They're not saying you have to hire a minority coach.

They're just saying, let someone in the door give him a shot.

Greg Bach

It's just snowflake low races who just want their way and want their, you know, like, no, white people are put upon against.

No, we're not.

We're fine.

We're doing great.

We're doing great.

We're doing absolutely great.

I think when it comes to presidents for

Pete Schwabba

like 50 to one or something like that.

Greg Bach

Yeah.

Uh, NFL still hasn't called me.

So I guess I'm, I guess I got to go complain about something.

So while I'm doing that, let's get to the third big story real quick.

Oh, so go on.

No, please.

Pete Schwabba

I insist.

Greg Bach

Vince Vaughn, the actor, remember him from movies like Wedding Crashers and that other movie that your dad loves.

He says that he's calling out late night shows.

He says they feel the same.

They slams Colbert and Kimmel for scolding.

It's stopped being funny.

He doesn't like the fact that it's part of an agenda based style that basically, you know, throw it, put somebody, he said, he said, quote on a Theo Vaughn's terrible podcast.

It stopped being funny and it started feeling like I was in an effing class.

I didn't want to take, well then.

Turn off the show.

Don't listen.

Walk away.

You're Vince Vaughn.

You have way more things to do with

Pete Schwabba

your life.

You've got Newsmax you've got Fox you've got like like I understand that I'm with you Turn the TV off and frankly nobody watches those shows that's in the business So I think he probably unless his friend was on and not only that this is kind of gutless This is Vince Vaughn reading the room and going while everyone else is ripped on late-night talk shows for

Greg Bach

the

Pete Schwabba

last year year and a half I'm gonna jump in now because it's safe.

That's lame and and Joe Rogan too another one Greg, you know trying to read the room

Grifting now ripping on Erica Kirk and it just I don't get these guys there.

You know, he's a grifter I think Vince Vaughn I just think is late to the party.

Greg Bach

Okay.

Yeah, it's yeah, exactly It's just he's using talking points like the reason why the ratings are so shut up Is it because they haven't invited you on their show lately?

I mean, yeah, yeah Colbert wants to be on.

No, thank you I don't like his ratings or his politics You're gonna go on to talk about your TV show.

Pete Schwabba

He's

Greg Bach

made

Pete Schwabba

two good movies swingers in old school

Oh, it is.

I saw that.

Hey, Cindy Scapani, professor of business law at the University of Michigan is up next after the news.

Don't go anywhere, folks.

This is Nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach on the Civic Media Network.

The word is bike.

Greg Bach

Welcome back to Nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach.

My name is Greg Bach coming to you live from Radio Park in Racine and coming all the way all the way up in northeastern Wisconsin in Christmastown, USA.

Did I get that right this time?

Nope.

Okay.

Marinette, Wisconsin.

It's Mr. Pete Schwabba down in actually should say over in Madison in what

Brett from Brown deer calls the Yadir.

Hey, a triangle in Madison is Mr. Domely on the ones and twos.

And we are here with you tonight.

Very excited to talk to you.

Don't forget in the second hour, we'll be talking to Civic Media Sports Authority.

Mr. Mike Clemens, we'll be talking probably about all things baseball and maybe some, we'll talk some badgers as well.

I know it's going to be a stingy topic, but we got, we got to get it out there.

We got to like talk

Cindy Skipani

about these

Greg Bach

things and open up our hearts and understand it's a game.

There's always next year, but I can't hide from it.

And then we'll be wrapping the show up as we do with the nightcap So don't go anywhere remember our question of the night is who is the greatest music duo of all times you can call or you can text that in 8 5 5 7 5 2 4 8 4 2 8 5 5 7 5 civically a comment on the live stream We're currently streaming on Facebook YouTube and the platform.

We still call Twitter The word of the hour is bike for the text to win contest the break in the spring text to win multi-state contest You still have a little while about 20

five minutes left to text that word in via the Civic Media app for your chance to win $200 and get put into a grand prize drawing for a Verlo mattress set.

We've been seeing some text coming through.

I don't know.

The app might be down, folks.

I'm not positive.

We're trying to still get a handle on that one.

But if you can text through, go ahead and do that.

Good luck to you.

The word is...

We're going to be talking about a bike.

But right now, let's get to our first guest for the evening.

She is the Merwin H. Waterman Collegiate Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Business Law at the University of Michigan Raw School of Business.

Please welcome to the show, Cindy Scapani.

Good evening, Cindy.

How are you today?

Cindy Skipani

Great.

Thank you.

It's great to be here.

Greg Bach

Thank you so much.

Now we have you on the show to talk about, I mean, online bedding.

And I know a lot of people in their heads, they say, oh, online bedding, they think.

DraftKings, dual, whatever, the ESPN betting app.

And I feel like when we think of online betting, we have a certain idea in our head, and that's mainly sports.

And with the past few years, it's expanded to like the presidential election or maybe even the Oscars.

But it's way deeper than that.

It goes way deeper and far reaching as far as what people are betting on.

Can you talk more about that?

Give us an idea of what people are actually betting their money on nowadays.

Cindy Skipani

Well, the platforms that run

these these so-called bets, they don't like to call them bets.

They like to call them investments in a contract.

So they'll set up a statement and it's a binary decision.

It's a yes or no.

So do you believe Jesus Christ is coming again this year?

So yes or no when you put your money down on it.

They're saying that's an investment contract and

you'll make money if you're right and you'll lose your investment entirely if you're wrong.

So they don't like the term bedding, but it's really hard to see a difference from a bed.

But it's on just about anything that they'll put on.

So you've probably seen the things about whether Jeff Bezos was going to attend the Super Bowl and the second coming of Jesus.

all different kinds of things that again, it's a yes or no, and you put your money down wherever you think it's going to go.

They're relatively new, but they're expanding to everything.

You're calling it a predictions market, I think is one of the phrases that that I've seen for it.

And it's really a digital platform for laying your money down.

Pete Schwabba

I saw that prediction market is does anybody to the best of your knowledge bet

that Jesus is coming back.

That seems like it's been 2,000-some-odd years.

That seems like a safe bet to go against if you have enough money to put down.

And how do you prove that?

Somebody could probably say, well, I saw him at Target or something.

Cindy Skipani

Yeah, you got me on that.

I do believe, though, there are bets on that going both ways.

And you'll win more money if the odds are against you and it happens, kind of just like you would in any other betting scenario.

Right.

I don't know how they'll prove that one.

And a really sad, terrifying thing is that I read about threats to a journalist because they reported on an issue that high rollers didn't want it reported that way as to whether a missile landed in Israel, I believe, or whether it was just debris from it being attacked in the sky.

And there were threats on this journalist.

So it gets really scary when there's a lot of money backing certain positions and how they're going to prove it.

If you're part of the proof and the big rollers don't like it, that's starting to get extremely worrisome.

Greg Bach

When we're talking about this, you know,

contracts, securities, like however you want to, I see it as betting.

Like to me, if you're betting, whether you're betting on the Super Bowl or you're betting on the second coming of Christ, you're betting.

You're putting money down, you're saying, but there are two main groups in this, and it's Polymarket and Kelsey, if I'm not mistaken, Kelsey is the one.

And in the articles I've read, it seems like Kelsey wants to be a little bit more...

self-governing.

They want to take care of problems.

They see it.

Whereas Polymark is thumbing their nose to everyone saying, we don't care.

Can you talk more about that itself?

But also I feel like I don't, I don't personally believe that either one of them, like I don't think that Kelsey is going to self-govern.

I think they need to have like more than that, like their attempt to do it themselves.

It just seems, I don't know, I don't trust it personally, but can

Cindy Skipani

you talk more

Greg Bach

about the difference between the two?

Cindy Skipani

Yeah, so I think with Kashi trying to self-govern they're trying to show that they are They are caring about what happens in their space.

I think they also want to If they put in the rules, then they're hoping perhaps and I shouldn't put words in their mouth But I suspect they want those to be the rules and not have government or have other type of regulation in place So they'd like to write the rules of the game and I think they're trying to

to be respectful about it, to see what those rules might be, to avoid regulation.

Where, you know, the poly market, I think is kind of, should I say, all bets are off.

All

Greg Bach

contracts are off.

Cindy Skipani

You got it.

They're letting it go at the moment.

So we'll see.

This whole thing reminds me a little bit of when Uber and Lyft came to town and there were

different states had different approaches as to whether they might arrest a Lyft driver versus whether to allow these platforms.

And I do remember.

an executive vice president for Lyft, he was in the air more than he was ever on land, but traveling state to state to try to negotiate what the best terms were for the platform in that jurisdiction to find out what the, in that case, it would have been mostly like the city councils, I believe, what they cared about and whether they could provide it and help again, draft the rules and regulations to it.

And the question there was also, is this a taxi?

Are they independent contractors?

Are they employees?

Or is this just a platform of putting people together?

So this reminds me of that, although the stakes seem much higher and a lot more money involved and they can be scary.

I think they all...

They're trying to avoid state-by-state regulation and to be able to operate the way they choose to operate.

Pete Schwabba

Our guest is Cindy Skipani.

She is a professor of business law at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

Cindy, you said recently in an article, they're trying to differentiate basically what is insider trading and what isn't.

And it's like the Wild West.

Can you elaborate on that?

And is that basically when it comes to regulations or different things to bet on, what did you mean by that?

Cindy Skipani

I meant that.

We don't even know what these markets are.

So in terms of how to regulate them, the question is, is it betting?

Is it gambling?

Like the states are suggesting, and there are many states have sued Kalshi.

For instance, the state of Michigan just got in the game recently.

I'm stating that this is online.

It's gambling and the rules of the state for that need to come into play and it's not just do what you want.

On the other hand, the question is, well, are these investment contracts?

The Commodities Futures Trading Commission, CFTC,

says they have exclusive jurisdiction over this market and they can decide what regulations are in place.

The states are saying no, this is a state issue because it's gambling and it's not part of our laws.

And then these things are so new and they have expanded, as we just talked about, to predictions just about on anything.

So I do see this as the

the Wild West.

I don't see that we have guardrails in place.

I don't see that we've even decided what they are, which which box to put them in.

Insider trading is typically we think about corporations and we think about an executive or a person inside the corporation knowing whether an event's going to happen.

So whether we're going to get the contract, whether we're going to lose the contract, they get the knowledge before the market does.

So they can trade, not legally, but the insider trading aspect is that they go ahead and either sell or buy to avoid a loss or to make money before the information comes out.

That's what typical insider trading is, and it's regulated by the Securities Exchange Commission because this is a stock, it's an investment.

What is this?

Is it gambling?

Is it an investment?

the Securities Exchange Commission, the SEC hasn't really weighed in on that, but you can envision there being typical insider trades inside this platform.

So I might be an executive at a big corporation and there might be a bet about whether we're going to get a contract or something else on there.

I know.

So if I go in and bet on it, I'm really rigging the market.

Definitely not legal under the Securities Exchange Commission.

But then there are other kinds of things out there that aren't related to corporations, but I might have the inside track.

And does that make this market fair?

Is it being manipulated?

And again, the CFTC can go after manipulations, but the moment

They seem to be pretty hands-off on what's going on.

So we just don't know.

Greg Bach

And something I wanted to talk about with you, and I'll talk about it right now, but when we come back on the other side of the break, you can address it, is the fact that what I was reading from my research is that until they even all come together, whether it's, say, it's delegations from each state to the federal government, or it's the CFTC and the SEC, until they come up with definitions,

Nothing can really happen because as you said it's like one side saying it's betting one side saying it's trading one side saying it's inside information the other side is saying no because and I want to use an example that you brought up that's in the verge article is the fact that you know Jeff Bezos his stepson said that my dad might not be coming to the Super Bowl and that could influence thing is that insider information or is that guy just talking to his buddy but his buddies dropped some of them dropped $10,000 on these

trades to say that he would or wouldn't be there.

So I want to talk more about that on the other side.

But when we come back, we'll be speaking more with Cindy Scapani.

She is a professor at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

We're discussing, as we've been told, the bonkers world of online trading or

contract trading, however you want to say prediction markets, prediction markets.

That's right.

That makes it sound that's, that's betting with a tie, but we'll be talking more about that with Cindy on the other side of the break.

Don't forget folks, text in the word bike on the civic media app to be part of the break in a spring text to win multi-state contest, your chance to win $200.

That's going on for a little bit longer, but don't go anywhere.

You're listening to nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach here on the civic media network.

Stay tuned.

Stay close.

Pete Schwabba (host)

Welcome back to Nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach here on the Civic Media Network.

If you want to be part of the conversation call 855-752-4842, 855-755-CIVIC.

Leave a comment on our live stream.

We're currently streaming on Facebook, YouTube and the platform.

We still call Twitter.

Still have a few more minutes.

If you haven't participated in our break in the spring text to win multi-stake contest, text in the word bike.

B I K E via the civic media app.

Let me see really quick here.

Chris and son prairie you misspelled the word so if the word is bike B I K E like look at that.

Shiny Schwinn bike, but you have a few more minutes to do that coming up in the second hour We're talking to civic media sports authority Mike Clements about opening day as well as maybe the NCAA tournament and badger sadness But that's all coming up and we kept everything off within the night cap So don't go anywhere having a lot more fun and we are talking to Cindy Scappani who is a professor at the University of Michigan's School of business and we're talking about online whether you want to call it betting or trading or futures

And that was something I talked about before we went to the break Cindy, which was it doesn't feel like anything can get done until people sit down in a room and decide what this is.

Because until they do, everyone just gets to have their way and say, well, no, sorry, this is what we're doing.

So it's really going to take, I believe, political leaders, elected officials coming together and saying we need to we need to create something that works for everyone.

So we know what's going on and we have applicable rules to put in place.

Cindy Scappani (interviewee)

I think that's exactly right.

And there are some proposals or some legislative initiatives in play.

Nothing has gotten very far yet, but there is a bipartisan bill about calling it.

at least with regard to sports, sports gambling and having that be decided by the states.

So sort of taking it out saying, no, you can't do that.

You have to go through the regulatory process state by state if it's about sports.

There also are proposals about, what is it called, the death bets, something along those lines where there is a proposal to

outlaw completely, anything dealing with death, assassination,

Pete Schwabba (host)

or

Cindy Scappani (interviewee)

those types of things as against the public interest.

Now, the regulatory body, the CFTC, does have the authority to decide that something's against the public interest.

But if Congress passes a bill, this takes it out of their discretion and says,

We know this is just flat out against the public interest.

And there's another proposal to try to deal with inside information so that if you happen to have the inside track on one of those bets or contracts, then you may not put your money down on that.

And there's a good sense of fairness there.

insider trading in the regular stock market, we don't like it because it shows the markets may be rigged.

I mean, why would I put an investment in a company if I know the insiders are going to make all this money first and I don't have a shot at really having a good investment?

So the whole idea behind that is to try to, we can never make it equal or even, but we're trying to give a little more sense of

you know a fairness and I think that's not a bad idea for these markets as well.

If you have the inside track then you or your friends shouldn't be playing that one.

On the other hand we like information and so we want to encourage people to dig for information but dig properly like you know stock brokers like the media when you're reporting on things dealing with companies so I wouldn't want to discourage

Getting at the truth, but you know, it just happens to be that you have you're the only one with a source of information and that's a different story

Greg Bach (host)

While we've been talking here, I placed a bet that Jesus is coming back.

He's gonna look around and then leave so not be happy with what he sees I'll let you know how that works out.

I like the term prediction markets.

It makes it seem like betting on terrorism is so

Okay, like these aren't hog futures or grains people are vet are betting on What is to say like I can't believe there aren't already laws that the people that are doing bombings or people that are betting on terrorism that that's not already Is that considered insider trading or is that a law on a different level that you'd have to go after people?

Cindy Scappani (interviewee)

It would be on a different level and I think it would be against public interest clearly and from what I understand call sheet

didn't pay out on the death of the Iranian leader because of that, although I don't know why that bet even got on their platform then.

I mean, I'm a little bit lost on all of that.

Greg Bach (host)

They took the bet but won't pay out on it?

Yeah.

Cindy Scappani (interviewee)

Apparently.

Apparently.

I mean, that's what I've read.

So that is just not comprehensible right now to my mind.

But I think clearly there are things against public interest.

And you may be

If you're an insider and you can then game the system on, okay, the bets are going this way, I can change what I'm going to do so that I make big money on the long shot or that the incentives are just messy and wrong, I think.

Pete Schwabba (host)

Yeah.

Thank you, Cindy.

Thank you so much for coming by talking to us about this.

Before we get out of here, I wanted to put this up on here.

I wanted to see it.

Joe on the live stream says, thank you for having Cindy on.

I read McCabe.

Coppins?

Coppins reporting on his journey into the world of online gambling.

It was sobering and like a trip to a parallel universe.

Well, yeah, online gambling is one thing.

This, my friends, is a whole other thing and we'll be interested to see.

what happens in the next few years as far as who's going to come to the table to say, let's put something together that protects the people and makes it, as you said, Cindy, it's not going to be totally fair, but maybe just a little bit more fair.

We'll move towards that.

That's always a good thing.

But Cindy Scappani is a professor of business law at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

Thank you so much for being here tonight.

We really appreciate your time and your expertise.

Thanks.

Thank

Cindy Scappani (interviewee)

you.

This was fun.

Thanks.

Go ahead.

I'm

Pete Schwabba (host)

glad you enjoyed it.

Okay, when we come back, we're going to be talking about the question of the night.

Who is your who is the best music duo of all times?

Feel free to call or text 855-752-4842, 855-755-CIVIC.

Leave a comment on the livestream about that or, you know, you got a few more seconds.

The word is bike.

B I K E texted in via the civic media app for the text to win contest breaking into spring here.

It's opening day.

We're celebrating the brewers.

Sorry, white socks here on night light with beach, Schwabba and Greg Bach on the civic media network.

Announcer

Trying to make sense of the world.

You've got nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach.

Greg Bach (Host)

Call our toll-free number now.

Announcer

Headlines, culture, and real conversation.

Greg Bach (Host)

And now, our feature presentation.

Announcer

Here's Pete and Greg.

Greg Bach (Host)

Welcome back to Nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach here on the Civic Media Network.

We're coming to you live, alive on opening day of baseball here.

The Brewers win 14 to two.

We'll talk more about that with Mike Clemens, who is Civic Media's sports authority sports writer.

Guru travels all over the country to get the sports you need, but that's more in a little bit.

Not across the state.

I feel like I can't say that.

Can I say Pete?

Can I say across the state down?

Announcer

Up the state.

Up the

Greg Bach (Host)

state.

Up the state.

Up the state.

There we go.

That

Announcer

sounds a

Greg Bach (Host)

lot better than up the state.

Up the state.

Up state for me in northeastern Wisconsin in Marinette.

We got Mr. Pete Schwabba and then all the way over in Central-ish South.

Wisconsin, we have Dom in Madison on the ones and twos.

Thank you so much for being here.

We still have another great hour ahead for you.

We got, as I said, we have Mike Clemens coming up in just a little bit.

Plus we're going to

We're going to, you know, simmer it down.

We're going to bring it on in for a fun time with the nightcap to close it all out.

But folks, if you, whether you participated or you missed the opportunity to put in the keyword for our break into spring text to win multi-state contest, you have another chance in the seven o'clock hour.

So stick around, stay tuned because you'll get that keyword.

And then it will all start tomorrow again at seven AM, seven more chances.

And tomorrow is the last day.

So it went fast.

It went real fast.

So yeah, make sure you have that Civic Media app.

Make sure you stay tuned for that keyword.

Text it in.

If you get an opportunity for an extra entry, go ahead and take that one.

And you're good to go.

But good luck to you.

Thank you to everyone who has participated so far.

I got to say, Cindy Scappani was amazing.

That was a great interview.

She was fantastic.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

I totally agree.

And I had more questions, but I also, it's so basic.

I'm so pedestrian when it comes to online betting to begin with.

I just don't get it.

I get why people bet on sports.

I have friends that do it, but I don't, I like watching my teams.

I don't need another reason to watch a sport because I put money on it.

It's enough of a time waster.

So I don't even get online betting, but a lot of people do.

You know, the last time I was at Potawatomi, Greg, I was

Announcer

there

Pete Schwabba (Host)

with my wife and my son.

My son wanted to try Blackjack and we're walking around.

It was probably six months ago on a Saturday night.

It was so depressing.

I don't remember.

Like I've spent time when I was a stand up in casinos and you'd go with the other comic and always fun to walk around or whatever, blow 20 or 50 bucks or whatever.

But like so many of those people.

look like they should not have been there.

They look like they couldn't afford to be there.

They got whatever money they had and they're going right to the casino.

It was really hard for me to enjoy

Greg Bach (Host)

myself there.

I mean, honestly, Pete, these are a lot of folks and I'm not, this is, I'm not a gambler.

While you say that you want to just watch your team and enjoy, I just look at my money and say, I want to keep that.

I want it to be my money.

A lot of those folks live in the world of like the lottery mentality where they think that they're going to hit it big, whether it's scratch offs, you know, the mega ball, mega power ball, mega power ball or

Announcer

at

Greg Bach (Host)

the casino, they think that's where their ship's going to come in.

And that's the bummer is that we live in a world where that is a viable idea of how to quote, make it rich.

And yeah, I've been in those casinos as well.

I'm very lucky.

My mom, my mom enjoys gambling.

She enjoys poker, video poker, but she has the guardrails on.

She has her budgets.

When she plays poker with friends, it's for nickels, dimes and quarters.

When she goes to Pottawatomie, it's very strategic.

When she's done, she's done.

And so, and I tell her all the time, I think it's really funny that both of my parents were poker players and went to Vegas regularly and

Announcer

neither

Greg Bach (Host)

one, neither my sister nor I gamble at all.

Period and it's not because we they lost our inheritance.

It's just because we just don't do

Pete Schwabba (Host)

it Well, you're smart.

I mean if you don't if you don't feel the need to do it, you're better off not doing it I just like I love the game poker.

That's why I believe it I would I've never spent a penny like if I lose everything on my app I just build it back up and it sucks, but I'm not yeah I'm not paying real money for fake money.

That's just has never made sense to me I don't know it's no you're right.

I don't I

Greg Bach (Host)

completely understand what you're saying

You know it's not depressing though, Pete.

A lot of stuff.

But what?

Well, first of all, the Brewer's win today.

The Brewer's win today is not depressing.

You know what else isn't depressing?

The Cubs lost today too.

But what really isn't depressing is the question of the night.

Dom in Madison (Producer)

Let's talk about the question.

Okay, question.

Question.

Question.

Question.

Question.

Okay, I have a question.

Questions.

This question.

Domanda.

Question.

Question.

Questions.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

Here we go.

Let's go.

LFG, as they say, folks, who is your favorite music duo of all time?

Who is the best music duo of all time?

That is our question of the night.

And you know what?

It's interesting, Greg, before the show, we were talking about how Seals and Croft, a big time duo in the 70s and 80s, Croft died.

And what was this first name?

Greg Bach (Host)

Dash,

Pete Schwabba (Host)

as in like Mrs. or a dash of or.

Yeah.

Mrs. Um, crazy 85 years old passed away.

So they're no longer a duo.

I don't even know if the other one's still alive to be honest with you.

Yeah.

But, um, and it begs the question, will they go on tour with seals saying it's still seals and crop?

Like a lot of bands still do that, even though like only the bass players left and they're in their 80s and they still tour, you know, well, I think that's interesting to see.

Greg Bach (Host)

I think that the last remaining, the last surviving member of the Moody Blues is touring.

Like it's a thing where they

two or solo playing the music of the band and maybe some of their old music, their own solo music too.

But I mean, now, I mean, when, when Glenn Fry died, I was like, well, the Eagles are over, but they're like, no, let's get a sunplay.

Like these bands just don't stop because there's money to be made.

And honestly, a lot of these, I know musicians, you know musicians.

It's not even musicians.

It's people who make their life going out on stage and entertaining.

It, it's their lifeblood.

It's what they know.

So.

They will continue to do it in that sense, but I wouldn't be surprised.

But also, I don't know how old seals is.

Well, he's got to be, I

Pete Schwabba (Host)

would think in the ballpark of 85 like a dash Croft was, but no, and I get it.

It's in their blood.

I, you know, if you love what you do, especially you're

Bringing joy to people singing or doing comedy or whatever you don't ever want to hang it up You know you might tour us, but but good for them So anyway folks answer the question if you will please who is the best music duo of all time 8 5 5 7 5 2 4 8 4 2 8 5 5 7 5 civic

You can also text us on the Civic Media app.

Do we have information?

Are we back up?

I

Greg Bach (Host)

saw entries come in after I said something, so it seems like things might be good.

But if you can't get through the app, text us via the phone, your regular phone, or give us a call.

We'd love to hear from you.

Sure.

Give us a call.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

If you're watching the radio on YouTube, Facebook, or X Twitter, you can drop us a stream comment too.

But play the game.

Not the contest.

That's not happening this hour.

I just realized what I said.

But be part of the show.

That's what I meant to say.

And do you have a favorite duo, Greg?

Greg Bach (Host)

Music duo?

Gosh, I don't know.

I mean, as far as, like, it's easy to say.

Well, let me ask you something here.

Yeah.

Because one of the answers on the Facebook page

was from Robert.

He said Lenin and McCartney.

And I don't see Lenin and McCartney as a musical duo.

They wrote songs together, but they were in a band.

Like to me, I think of Seals and Croft, Hall and Oats, those kinds of, that's what I think of a musical duo.

So I mean, I might be doing too strict, but it's very hard to nail that one down because there's so many great groups out there.

I mean, if I'm going to say, it's going to be Daft Punk for me.

Ooh, okay.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

That's interesting.

I I answered on on social media as well, and I said Simon a Garfunkel to me that's hands down Yeah, the amount of hits I just love their style to love the guitar and the harmonizing and all that kind of stuff So those would be those are my two favorite.

What about you dummy got one?

Dom in Madison (Producer)

Yeah, I like MGMT.

So I like Andrew and Ben from MGMT.

I just

big in a FIFA and they had a bunch of FIFA songs.

So, that was me.

Yeah, I'm Jim T for sure.

Wolf

Pete Schwabba (Host)

down a big arch burger and

Dom in Madison (Producer)

listen to

Greg Bach (Host)

some... Well, folks, I'm home.

It's time for some good music and some good burger.

Give me the big arch

Pete Schwabba (Host)

and

Greg Bach (Host)

some big hits.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

Tony Zimmerman on the stream.

Our pal Tony here at Civic Media says, Brooks and Dunn.

Okay, that's another big one.

I love Brooks and Dunn.

That's a good concert, by

Greg Bach (Host)

the way.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

Yeah, and then he says or Rebecca black and Friday.

I don't know.

Okay.

That's you know, he's just being silly

Greg Bach (Host)

just like there's a lot of silliness on the Facebook

Pete Schwabba (Host)

today like black Friday.

I

Greg Bach (Host)

can't believe myself for that key and peel.

Come on now.

What was the other Garth Brooks and Chris Chris Gaines.

Eric could being silly.

Millie Vanilly.

Oh, love their work.

I love the work that was done for

Pete Schwabba (Host)

them.

Here's another one I don't understand.

Brett, our pal from Brown Deer says, the best duo I can think of is Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder in Temple of the Dog.

So I guess if they collaborated on an album?

Sure.

That works.

Greg Bach (Host)

Temple of the Dog was a side project for both of them that was still

Pete Schwabba (Host)

a

Greg Bach (Host)

band.

And

Pete Schwabba (Host)

again, again, I

Greg Bach (Host)

am being, I am being a snob right now.

So I say live your life and like what you love and do your thing.

But when I think of musical duo is I don't like, that's not what comes to mind when I think of a musical duo.

Announcer

But

Greg Bach (Host)

if that's what you like, go for it.

We got a lot of Simon and Garfunkels on the, on the text line, by the way, David and Tom both say Simon and Garfunkel.

What else we got?

This was a good one.

Robert on Facebook said, the captain into Neil,

Pete Schwabba (Host)

well then.

Yeah, Robert is an opera singer, by the way, so I'm not gonna argue with him

Announcer

on that.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

Tom from Hartford on the text line also says the jugs.

I think he

Announcer

meant

Pete Schwabba (Host)

the jugs, but I could be wrong.

Tim Baker says Chad, oh, that might be on social media.

I just don't know.

So yeah, well, let's just go to the social media.

We got some great social media interaction today.

Let's see what, uh, see what people are saying.

Greg Bach (Host)

Chad and Jeremy, do you know them?

I do actually.

Yeah.

We've, we've actually on one of some of our stations here on civic media, we play some Chad and Jeremy.

It's like they're a band that like never made it huge, but they've got a couple of hits.

Uh, what else we got here?

Uh, Tim says, uh, the Everly brothers.

He also says Simon and Garfunkel, the smothers brothers, which I would totally go for.

They were very musical.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

Oh, that's

Greg Bach (Host)

true.

Sylvia Ian and Sylvia.

I've never heard of them and Seleno and Barnes.

That's

Dom in Madison (Producer)

interesting stuff.

That's interesting stuff.

Ian and Sylvia are a folk duo.

There's more Lenin

Pete Schwabba (Host)

and McCartney too.

Joe said Lenin and McCartney.

I want to get your take on this Greg because my pal Pat said, Hall of Notes is not even close.

There are some songs I like by Hall of Notes.

I feel they're overrated.

Am I way off there?

Chris Anderson on the text also said Hall

Greg Bach (Host)

notes.

I think Hall notes are definitely contenders.

I think, you know, they wrote so many hits and their,

Pete Schwabba (Host)

and

Greg Bach (Host)

their, their progression too, from when they first started, when they were that blue eyed, you know, pencil, Philadelphia soul sound to more pop rock.

I feel like, yeah, I, I, I would definitely put them up there.

And I don't think that's overrated.

I, but again,

If that's not your jam, it's not your jam.

I would say my favorite new duo is Angine des Portrines, which is a Quebec two-person group that wear masks and play and are completely made up in paint, except for like their exposed skin is made up with body paint.

They wear these weird costumes and they play music that for a lot of people is completely unlistenable, but I love it.

And social media is going...

bonkers for them right now.

Like their look is very, very, very unique.

Angine de potrine.

I don't know if I'm saying that correctly, but just look them up.

They are amazing.

Brian on the text line in Sun Prairie listening and WMDX says the white stripes.

That's good.

That's

Pete Schwabba (Host)

very,

Greg Bach (Host)

very good.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

Great

Greg Bach (Host)

one.

And then Anna in Madison says, hi, Pete and Greg.

My favorite duo is the Everly brothers.

They had great harmonies.

They did indeed.

We

Pete Schwabba (Host)

had Boris on social media also said the Everly Brothers.

I love the Everly Brothers.

Jenny Brand, our civic media colleague, says Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell with Wham as a close second.

Love both of those, Jenny.

Wham's

Greg Bach (Host)

amazing.

Pete Schwabba (Host)

Wham's amazing.

Greg Bach (Host)

They released two records, and that was it.

Is that it?

That's it.

I could talk for hours about Wham.

Oh my

Pete Schwabba (Host)

gosh, Matt Cassane also says Hollin' Outs, Outstanding.

Greg Bach (Host)

All right.

it's time for the Civic Media Sports Guru Sports Authority Sports writer, Mr Mike Clemens here with us talking about opening day and other sports events going on.

But don't go anywhere.

You are listening to Nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bogg here on the Civic Media Network.

Stay tuned.

Stay close.

Mike Clemens

Wow.

Pete Schwabba

Wow.

I can almost picture Dom eating a big arch burger and playing that music.

I don't know why.

Hey, welcome.

Welcome back.

Or any food for that matter.

Welcome back to Nightlight, folks.

I am Pete Schwabba, sitting upstate from Mr. Greg Bach, and Dom is in Madison working the board.

Great to have you with us tonight.

Our question of the night is, who is your favorite music duo?

I would say Simon and Garfunkel are probably in the lead with Everly Brothers or Holland Oats a close second, but we're having fun with that one.

Be part of the show and play along, folks.

Right now, we are going to turn our attention to sports.

Big day.

in the sports world, especially if you're an MLB fan opening day.

And joining us to break it all down is Civic Media Sports Authority and our pal, Mr. Mike Clemens.

Hey, buddy.

Greg Bach

Hi, Pete.

Hi, Greg.

Pete Schwabba

Great

Greg Bach

to have you, Mike.

Good evening.

Thank you so much for being here, sir.

Yeah.

Pete Schwabba

How are things at the ballpark?

I'm going to let Greg ask you about his favorite team, the Brewers, but how are you doing out there?

What's the mood like?

Mike Clemens

Well pretty ecstatic today the Brewers beat the Chicago White Sox 14 to 2 and I was thinking I got it I think it was like an 88 for the Brewers, you know when they had Robin Yacht Rob do those guys or where they had a 12 enough and win over the Orioles on opening day, but yeah, it turns out this is a Franchise record for opening day for the Milwaukee Brewers that are starting your 58 season score 14 runs 14 to 2

But yeah, all kinds of different storylines.

First of all, before the game, and on opening day, you know, Mark Antonostino, the owner, he'll come down and talk to us.

And Pat Murphy, the manager of the year, for the second year in a row, he came down and talked to us for about a half hour before the game.

Usually we meet in his office, but it was a full press conference.

But here's the thing you guys are like.

Adam McKelvie's been like a senior reporter for MLB, covering the Brewers for...

almost 20 years now.

And so Pat Murphy, you know, how he kind of holds court.

One of the things he does is, all right, any new people here before we get started, any new people are in the media.

I mean, I even want to talk to you camera people behind the cameras, introduce yourselves, tell me where you're from.

Is this your first time here?

Tell me a little bit about yourself.

So he does that to break the ice.

It's really it's almost like an MC at a nightclub, Greg.

Pete Schwabba

No,

Mike Clemens

it's so

Greg Bach

cool.

Mike Clemens

You know, you're who's here, right?

Yeah, you guys both know that for your time in the club.

So

Yeah.

He's doing that.

And then he says, you know, and he's always picking on his PR director, Mike Brasallo, and says, why don't we get a picture of these people for once?

So a photographer goes behind him and takes a shot of the behind, behind Murphy's head of all of us up there in the gallery.

And then the photographer posts it.

Well, Adam McCalley being a wise ass, he flips him the bird.

Oh, it's amazing.

And Adam's like, oh, I don't know if I'm in trouble, man.

My editor is impossible all day.

He's like, I don't know if he's going to be upset.

I might be in trouble.

No, I said, listen, man, that's a classic.

As soon as I get out of the ballpark, I'm going to Walgreens.

I'm putting that off.

I'm putting it up on my cubicle.

I love that.

I love that.

So, you know,

Pete Schwabba

you have fun

Mike Clemens

with him like that.

But then we get this news about 15 minutes before those pressures start, we say, Hey, you know what?

We're going to bring down the general manager, Matt Arnold, too, who comes in and tells us, yeah, Jackson Churio, star outfielder, batter.

He's going to start the season on IL.

That's because you guys remember when he was in the World Baseball Classic playing for his team, Venezuela, he

Greg Bach

got hit

Mike Clemens

the hand by a pitch.

All right.

And he missed a couple of games.

He played in that championship game, didn't get any hits against Team USA, but so on has continued.

He had two X-rays out in Arizona, or negative.

When they got him back to Milwaukee the other day, they had an MRI.

They found a hairline fracture in one of his fingers.

Oh my god.

He's going to start the season on the shelf.

Did not play today.

I could see a little brace on his hand in the clubhouse today.

But, you know, so they brought up Blake Perkins, who's, you know, been here before.

I mean, he played plenty of baseball.

So even though they continue to always lose these veterans and agency and big money to other markets like a Freddie Peralta, when you can replace that guy with Blake Perkins, that is your roster is doing pretty good right now.

Greg Bach

And that's something, you know, we're gonna go to a break in a moment, but just like the roster itself is impressive.

I had the chance, I went to a spring training game last week in Arizona.

I saw them take on the Texas Rangers and they just demolished them and it just felt, and there was a confidence in their playing and it felt really good to watch because it felt like they were very ready for today and going into this new season.

Mike Clemens

Yeah, and Greg, as you saw too,

All the, you know, the young names, the young players that they're bringing up from the minors that you said that they're, you know, testing out there in spring training, some who maybe didn't make the 40 man roster cut over 26 in the clubhouse.

But today, the line of us, you know, familiar names, Teran Contreras, Yelich and move on, Jake Bowers, who had a big home run today.

You know, the new guy is the third baseman, David Hamilton.

He got on base twice today and looked pretty good.

Greg Bach

It's excellent.

Love, love, love seeing that stuff.

We are talking to Mike Clemens.

He is our sports reporter, sports authority here at Civic Media talking about all things sports, especially today being opening day for the Brewers and many other teams around the area.

I know that Pete wants to also talk about the Badgers in a little bit and like we'll come back from the break.

We'll talk more about the Brewers, but we'll talk about also the NCAA as well.

But yeah, I

I guess, you know, we're going to be going to commercial in just a little bit.

So I would ask you a question now, but I don't want to have to interrupt you.

I have

Pete Schwabba

one for Mike, because we have to go to a break in about 30 seconds.

Mike, favorite musical duo?

Oh, there you

Mike Clemens

go.

I'm with you with Simon and Garfunkel.

Everly players are pretty damn good.

I'm sorry to hear about the other half of Seals and Cross fast.

Pete Schwabba

Yeah,

Mike Clemens

absolutely great songs.

Yeah.

Pete Schwabba

Absolutely that's that was a bummer.

I want to ask Mike when we come back about They were banging on all cylinders today the Brewers hitting and pitching so we can get back into that after the news Mike Clemens our civic media sports authority is here Dom team the White Sox managed to solo shots.

That's about it was a big win for the Brewers today an opening day.

They are undefeated folks We are coming right back.

This is nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach and Mike Clemens is here We are coming right back on the civic media network

Welcome back to Nightlight with Pete Schwabba and Greg Bach here on the Civic Media Network.

If you want to be part of the conversation, 855-752-4842-8557, 5 Civic, leave a comment on that live stream.

We are currently streaming on Facebook, YouTube and the platform we still call Twitter.

still ahead, we're going to have the nightcap to wrap things up.

But right now we are talking to civic media, sports authority, sports writer and all around good guy and coworker, Mr. Mike Clemens.

We are talking about the brewers opening day, big win for the brew crew, 14 to two against the White Sox, the Cubs lost two, but also just a great, exciting day.

And Mike, you were saying that Mark Antanasio also addressed the press and you said you had a chance to talk to him about some things, especially.

the prospects for this year in accordance to what happened last season?

Mike Clemens

Well, you know, it's because great, um, brewers fans, they come here, they have a great experience.

They love the ballpark.

They love the roof.

They, and, and this team keeps on somehow winning to the vision, even though they're ranked like 23rd in payroll.

And so there's this frustration.

Why can't this owner and his partners put up the money?

You know get a couple of more decent pitchers or some big slugger and you know you're playing the Dodgers and last year in August you beat the Dodgers three games to nothing.

And after the third game, I'm in Dave Roberts the manager's office and just kind of wrapping up my equipment and an old friend came to see me and says are you going back now to LA with a tumor?

Are you going on to San Francisco?

Because they're going to play the dresses.

No actually

I got a tea time tomorrow at Kohler.

Buddy of mine is taking me out to Kohler.

I've never golfed there before.

Dave Roberts, he just went 0-3 in Milwaukee, and he's more worried about his tea time.

He's not even going to fly out with his players to San Francisco.

And I'm thinking, these guys, they won the year before they phoned in.

And then one ends up happening.

They cream the Brewers in the playoffs, and they beat the Blue Jays in the World Series.

You know, and that's what happens when you've got that huge payroll and you've got those kinds of veterans.

So even though last year you win 97 games, you know, is this going to be like Lucy and Charlie Brown and going to pull the football away at the last second?

You know, again, and Duke's fans.

But at the end of the day, I think another, another insight I had into what Mark Antonosio is as the owner for this team is that, you know,

There was just that tribute to Bob Holland and his 20 years of running the Packers.

There was a time where I was following Bob Holland up this escalator at the Bengal Stadium in Cincinnati.

And this thing was up on a second and third floor.

And if you went left or right, you're going old.

You're going down.

And Bob turns back to one of his assistants says, can you imagine having one of these at Lambeau Field with our fans, referring to them being drunk?

And, but that was, that was about, he was always thinking about the fan experience.

What's it like when you park the car and you walk through the lot and you get, you know, you give him your ticket and how long is the line for the food?

How long is the line for the restroom?

What's the fan experience like?

And I asked, I'll tell you about that.

You know, he told me, he's like, yeah, you know, I was walking around the ballpark yesterday and I love the new things we've got with the scoreboard and the audio.

And, uh, you know, Rick here's, he's got people that.

that take care of that form.

He's not really that kind of touchy-feely.

He watches the money, but he's also got the disadvantage of being in the Milwaukee market, or Wisconsin, as opposed to New York, Chicago, L.A., and so he tries to keep them floating.

Now, they lost $20 million, which is a TV deal that's sold through, because the fan neural network they were owned by, those guys are going through bankruptcy.

So at the last minute, they're scurrying to find a new TV deal that they hope with the next two or three seasons can settle down and it'll be like a permanent brewers channel so that everybody knows, but they were putting out the channels last night.

So he's a pretty savvy business guy that way who, by the way, is also now on the labor committee because, you know, they got this CBA that's going to expire in December after the season and they worry about a lockout.

But that's the, that's the positive as a mark.

But you'd like to hear them just be, you know, one of the few color fans that they watch a lot, you know?

Greg Bach

Right, yeah.

Mike, my Cubs, I just saw a highlight on one of my sports pages I go to when it said Cubs opening day.

Yikes.

So I don't feel great about their opening day, but the Brewers got to feel good hitting and pitching banging on all cylinders today.

It's kind of a high bar out of the gate.

This might be their most complete win all year, even if they win the division.

How is the division shaping out?

I would think the Brewers would probably be the favorites.

Mike Clemens

Well, right now, I think Pat Murphy is focusing on settling in and finding what his new starting rotation is going to be since they traded Freddie Peralta in the offseason.

And within the last 48 hours, he went with the Miz, Jacob Mizorowski.

Now, here was an interesting situation.

Pat McAfee, who's now on ESPN, the sports talk guy in the middle of the day,

About a day and a half ago, he put out a challenge on a show.

He says, hey, the Miz, he's going to get the start.

How about that?

Hey, how about this?

How about this?

That's the guy who can throw like 103.

How about this?

We'll challenge Jacob Mizorowski up in Milwaukee and that white and then opener against the white side.

If he can throw a ball 104 miles an hour, the Pat McAfee show will donate $100,000 to his favorite charity.

And, you know, I was talking to some of the guys, they said that, you know, has anyone considered like

Okay, now you're planting that into this 23-year-old kid's head who's you know at his first opening day ever He'd never even been to the ballpark for an opening day and now he's starting and You know, I mean, what if he injures his arm trying to hit 104?

Pete Schwabba

Well, that's what I was thinking

Mike Clemens

Yeah, he gets up.

He gives up to the leadoff batter a home run and you're like, oh my god, here we go, right?

He settles in he strikes out 11 batters

And in the fourth or fifth, some guys got on and they got, but William Contreras, Pat Murphy gave him the credit on, let's place the ball here, let's place it there to get that pitcher in the right rhythm and got him through those innings to just leave that one run up there on the board in this 14 to two win for the Brewers.

And so listen, maybe he can go with the Miz at the top of the rotation as the starter.

But he got him through that experience today.

And I just thought that that was awesome.

Some pretty good stuff, the last 48 hours.

Pete Schwabba

If you're just joining us right now, we're speaking to Civic Media Sports reporter, Mike Clemens talking about the Brewers opening day, as well as, you know, a wonderful story about Bob Harlan.

I have to say, if I was listening to Bob Harlan, I'm like, you've also never seen Brewers fans either, because it's just as dangerous for them as it would be for Packer fans.

But you said something about

Mark on to not say that was interesting because last year for his like opening day interview, he said something to the effect of, well, I'm just the owner.

I don't control a lot of things.

It's like, yes, you're the owner.

So you are in control of things and something that the brewers fans have been, you know, concerned with for many years is this diminishing

payroll.

I mean, you've got a great team.

They managed to make it to the playoffs.

Their level of success varies between seasons, but it seems like they have more than enough reasons to say, hey, let's throw an extra, I don't know, $10 million in.

I know it doesn't sound, it's a lot of money to us, but for baseball, it's not a lot, but they continue to not do that and further fall down the payroll scale, which I feel like eventually will bite them and mark on to Nazio doesn't seem concerned.

Mike Clemens

All right.

And good recall on your part.

And so today he took a direct question like, okay, I mean, there's been some people that say, you know, a CBA and a salary cap and shared revenue like they do with the NFL.

In some ways, maybe that could hurt the small market or some of your freedoms to do certain things, right?

And he said, you know what, that's true.

And he kind of went into some details but said, he claimed, listen, we're competitive.

And whatever the format is, we'll be a good baseball team.

Okay, Mark, but I'll tell you what at the end of the day when the Mets and the Dodgers are spending 300 million dollars on one player I Think the Brewers and they kind of keep this close to their best They spend their money on scouts Okay, they find they find these next stars.

They've got I mean they've got dudes all over the Western Hemisphere the Eastern Hemisphere They're the ones that are pulling out these guys from Venezuela.

I mean half the damn Venezuela team which one the world baseball classic our Brewers

So, you know, and when you walk into that Brewer's clubhouse, you know, there's guys from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and they're pulling from, they're scouting the world for the very best hitters, the very best defensive baseball players and, and pitchers as well.

And that's been their secret formula is it's spend it in the scouting because it's scouts are a lot cheaper than one or two, you know, star baseball players.

And they keep on winning the division and being competitive that way.

So I think that's the way they're going to continue to operate this.

And Antonio said today's his 22nd year's owner, and he's already setting up a succession to his sons taking over someday to keep it in the families, the owners and the brewers.

Greg Bach

Yeah.

Mike, to switch gears and sports here, let's talk Packers a little bit before we let you go.

Are people pan, some Packer fan friends of mine are panicking a little bit about the defense.

They lost for Sean Gary and Kway Walker.

What is the mood like up in Green Bay regarding that?

I mean, they've got a new defensive coordinator, but how do you think things are gonna go?

Mike Clemens

They've lost the entire defensive coaches.

Except for the defensive line coach who they promoted to run defense coordinator.

You know, Jeff Aftley took most of the defensive coaches with him.

Uh, and then the, you know, they traded where Sean Gary into the Dallas Cowboys to get back a, a draft kick.

Yeah, there's going to be some new faces there, but Brian Goodekins is projecting that Lucas Van Ness is going to be able to step up.

Uh, JJ and Agbaria pass rusher Senate.

I ended up signing a deal with the jets.

I thought he had some good performances, but they're Sean Gary mystery.

as to why he has seven or eight sacks.

And then you get to like late October, early November, you play the Broncos and Micah Parsons goes down with a torn ACL.

Micah, that Rashad and Gary didn't have another sack the rest of the season.

And I think when you start looking at the film, you realize it's because teams were worried about Micah Parsons and that opened the door for Rashad and Gary to get in that backfield.

And the

Greg Bach

minute

Mike Clemens

that they didn't have to worry about number one Parsons on the field, they could double teamers Sean and Gary and they shut him down for the rest of the year.

And that's, you know, sort of what made the difference thing.

So otherwise, they've made some very good moves.

They got this, uh, John Hardgirl from the Vikings.

They're excited about that, the veteran, but that, for the last two or three years, when I've talked to the Packers offensive linemen,

in a week where they're going to play Minnesota.

That's the first guy that they talked about.

That guy's a beast.

We're going to have to double team that, dude.

And now he's on the package defensive line to help Octavante White with that defensive line rush.

And that certainly helps speed up the clock on a quarterback and helps out your safety and your corners as well.

So they did a pretty good job in free agency in getting similar level players.

And at the same time, they still have the draft coming up.

The other thing to remind fans is, when did this team, the Packers, make the biggest move of the franchise since they drafted Jordan Love?

It was the first week of the season when they got Micah Parsons.

So, stranger things can happen

Pete Schwabba

as

Mike Clemens

the season wears on before the trade deadline.

And I'll tell you, a year ago at this time, there's no way anybody thought that Micah Parsons was leading the Cowboys, but is that...

drama unfolded and divorce ended up splitting by the time they got to training camp.

And Jerry Jones, you know, his ego is bigger than the players and said, I'm not going to do a deal with a guy who won't negotiate with me directly.

I'm not going with with agents.

That's how Michael Parsons ended up being a Green Bay Packer and that didn't happen until September.

So there's plenty of other moves that can be made along the way.

Greg Bach

Mike, you're the best.

Thank you so much.

Enjoy being out at the old ballpark again.

Thank you as always, pal.

Great work, and hopefully we can talk again soon.

Mike Clemens

We will, boys.

Have a good night.

Thank you for letting

Greg Bach

me do YouTube.

Thanks so much.

That's Civic Media Sports Authority.

So please please feel free to join us with a collar at the door exactly exactly casual

wear some shorts if you want baby or as

Pete Schwabba

I saw one guy say

Greg Bach

a clothing mullet business up top party in the bottom I know do your thing so and then don't forget in the seven o'clock hour we got another keyword for the breaking the spring text to win multi-state contest that's your final chance for today and then it starts all over tomorrow for the last day but make sure you have that civic media app for that keyword texted in

for $200 your chance to win and possibly a Verlo mattress set.

So stay tuned, stay, stick around, get that specific media app and good luck.

But guys, I think it's time to get onto what we do here now at the end of the show.

We round things up.

We talk about what we've learned.

It's time for the nightcap.

Pete Schwabba

It's time to wind it down.

This is nightcap.

with Greg and

Dom Lee

Pete.

That's fantastic.

I want to say we do have some text, but I do want to address what you just said about the mullet.

Whoever coined the phrase business in the front, party in the back is a

Greg Bach

genius.

It's

Dom Lee

just so perfect.

Greg Bach

I want to look this up, but

First of all, I just want to say that that's our coworker who does the voiceover for that little segment.

I'm not going

Pete Schwabba

to say

Greg Bach

her name, but she's our coworker.

She works up a mansion.

She's fantastic.

Always has candy when you go to the office.

I want her to come to my house and just read me a book to put me to sleep.

Her voice is so relaxing.

You're like, give me, have her give me bad news.

I'll at least be like relaxed when it happens.

So yeah.

Pete Schwabba

Oh yeah.

Greg Bach

So.

When I heard someone refer to a mullet as a Kentucky waterfall, I nearly soiled my pants.

I laughed so hard that I was like, did you ever laugh so hard that you can't breathe?

Like you're

Dom Lee

like,

Greg Bach

yes.

But there was like, that's a Kentucky waterfall, baby.

I'm like, oh my God, that's the greatest title on earth.

I've never heard that before.

I love that.

We call it hockey hair growing up.

I had a mullet, but I didn't have what kids have today.

Like kids have like punk rock mullet or, you know, you know, frat mullet.

Like a mullet was just, you look like a regular short haircut.

Like Dom's hair right now, your hair replicates what my hair looked like in middle school, but just with long hair in the back.

And that was hockey hair or a mullet.

And that's what it looked like.

Nowadays people are like, I got a mullet.

I'm like, no, you don't.

You do not have a mullet.

I'm very... Do you think I would rock a mullet or no?

Don't do it.

Please don't.

Dom Lee

You know what else came back is the perm.

I remember

Greg Bach

one of

Dom Lee

my nephew got a perm and I'm like, I said to my son, I go, what's going on with that?

He goes, dad, they're everywhere.

Everybody's getting them.

I'm like, oh, okay, I'm the idiot.

Greg Bach

No, no, no, no, no, you're not.

You're exactly, you're thinking, everything you're thinking is right.

Take a picture of your nephew.

Hold on to that picture.

Show it to everyone.

No, no, no, don't show it to him.

Show it to everyone.

I mean, I got nothing against a body wave, but a perm.

Man, I'm a guy, I feel things.

I don't think a balayage, but don't you come at me with curlers.

All right.

We had some more texts come in throughout the evening for who is your favorite music duo.

Someone said, it shows my age.

They didn't say their name.

They're listening at 414 on WA UK.

It shows my age, but the righteous brother is, hey, man, you got to love that blood harmony.

It's a great, great thing.

Ross and Crawford County listening to, listening to us on WRCE says Robert Plant and Allison Krause had a nice duo with Raising.

He said, yes, they did.

That's an amazing album.

Dom Lee

That's great.

And it really doesn't show your age because the righteous brothers, even like my kids know all the nineties music now

Pete Schwabba

and

Dom Lee

the eighties music, that's just the way it goes.

And I love that music isn't gone.

It's still with us through oldie stations or, you know, generations past that still pass it on or whatever.

Chris and son prairie says Cheech and Chong for no apparent reason.

All right, Chris, that works.

And then the nine twos here.

Oh, Cindy from Appleton.

Pete Schwabba

Hey,

Dom Lee

Cindy, she says the judge.

Greg Bach

She got it

Dom Lee

right.

It is not the jugs.

Greg Bach

It's not the jugs.

It's the jugs.

The jugs.

Yeah, they were huge, man.

They were not the jugs.

They're amazing.

The jugs were not huge.

OK.

All right.

My goodness.

I can be immature with the best of them.

I know you can.

I watch it happen nightly.

I'm younger than Dom

Dom Lee

on some.

Pete,

Greg Bach

before we get out of here, what did you learn tonight?

Dom Lee

Boy, I learned a lot about online betting, which I knew

Greg Bach

nothing

Dom Lee

about going

Greg Bach

into the

Dom Lee

show.

And

Greg Bach

that is

Dom Lee

part of the reason I love doing nightlight.

Cindy was great.

And of course, obviously my Clemens too, but yeah, I learned a lot about betting.

That was

Greg Bach

interesting.

Same here.

I've learned that we need to come together and figure out some rules, some guardrails on that, or it's going to be another ruinous portion of our country, maybe even the world.

So thank you to Cindy.

Thank you to Mike for being here as well.

It was a great, great show.

I had fun tonight.

I don't want the two of you.

Dom Lee

I

Greg Bach

had a wonderful time.

Wonderful

Dom Lee

time.

It was a journeyman show, but no, it was great.

It was a lot of fun.

We had a blast, as always.

Greg Bach

And we

Dom Lee

talked about a comedy club during the special secret show, too, which could get us in trouble,

Greg Bach

although neither one of

Dom Lee

us are working comedy clubs.

Greg Bach

I mean, they don't hire me, so I don't care.

There you go.

All right, folks, thank you to Dominic.

Thank you to talker.

Thank you to traffic and engineering without their help.

Nothing works.

We're talking in microphones that do not work.

Thank you so much to everyone who called, texted, left a comment on the live stream to our guest Cindy Scapani, as well as Mike Clemens.

Thank you so much for being here.

Tomorrow we are going to have a great show talking about tea with Jennifer Nowicki.

And yes, stick around because in that seven o'clock hour is the final keyword of the day, the penultimate day of the break into spring text to win multi-state contest.

at that civic media app ready for that keyword texted in.

Good luck to you.

We will see you tomorrow and Pete, my friend, please say good night to the folks.

Good night, Wisconsin.
