Broadcasting live from the Civic Media Studios in Green Bay.

This is Night Light with Pete Chwaba.

Your inside source on everything entertainment from Wisconsin to Hollywood.

And now a guy still not convinced computers are here to stay, Pete Chwaba.

Pete Chwaba (host)

Welcome to Night Light, ladies and gentlemen.

How are we doing Wisconsin?

Great to have you with me on this Monday night.

And people all over the state tuning in to have the fun we have every night here where we talk about movies and TV and music and comedy.

And tonight we're even going to talk a little bit about the Packers and one of their most famous executives and his campaign for the NFL Hall of Fame.

We'll talk to Matt Miller, our pal from Milwaukee, Milwaukee Film Critic extraordinaire.

We'll talk movies and TV.

We'll talk some Packers.

We've got a lot of a lot of stuff happened over the weekend and Joining me as always is the lovable producer Conrad.

How you doing, buddy?

Conrad (producer)

Hello,

Pete Chwaba (host)

you

Conrad (producer)

know, uh today when I woke up I put on my brewer's hat my brewer's shirt my brother's pants No before I came into the studio today I had to

Change my outfit

lose

what happened

They didn't just lose today.

They're 0-4 right now.

Why are they really?

I don't even want to say the amount of runs.

42 runs they've given up in the past four games.

Oh, man.

They lost 11-1 today.

Pete Chwaba (host)

That's concerning.

No question.

Very concerning.

But I'm going to say equally as concerning the fact that you are rocking Brewer's head to toe.

I'm always leery of those guys.

Conrad (producer)

T-shirt, sweatshirt, sweatpants, hat.

I even had my Brewer socks on.

Brewer's box or briefs.

Well actually for the one sport I do have everything from head to toe is Packers.

Yeah, but do you wear them all at the same time?

If I'm going to a game.

Oh, yeah.

Wow.

I don't think I could do that.

I could do a jersey

Pete Chwaba (host)

or a hat.

Don't know if I could do the whole the whole shebang though like that.

Yeah, well anyway, he's a fashion thing not that I don't want to show my You

Conrad (producer)

don't

Pete Chwaba (host)

rock

Conrad (producer)

bears had to

Pete Chwaba (host)

tell Hat and if I go to a game I have a jersey I'll put on yeah at home I wear a hat But I kind of equate it to like people who wrap who have the the American flag shirt shorts It's just a fashion thing with me.

I just and I'm not even a fashion guy

It's just,

Conrad (producer)

you know, the fandom.

It's there.

Yeah, I get it.

Even in my house by myself, you know?

No one knows I'm doing

Pete Chwaba (host)

it by myself.

That's

Conrad (producer)

acceptable.

Pete Chwaba (host)

That I could see.

Folks, it is great to have you with us tonight.

Wherever you're joining us, if you're on the app of the stream or on the good old fashioned radio, pull the wife and kids into the room.

And let's have some radio fun tonight.

We've got a lot to talk about.

There was a lot going on in the week.

First, I want to let people know, though, just a reminder, folks, if you tune in regularly here at Civic Media, or even if you don't, you still qualify for our break into spring text-to-win statewide contest.

Your daily chance to win a Chulivis to get away.

Milwaukee Brewer's club level tickets, those might not be high on the list right now, or $100 in cash.

Plus, every entry puts you into our grand prize drawing of a brand new Queen mattress set from Verlo that includes a mattress, sheet set, mattress protector, and pillows.

The times for text to win are 7 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m.

Get the word of the day, open up your Civic Media app.

You're probably already listening there anyway and send the word in and you are entered.

You are qualified for the daily prize as well as the grand prize.

So wait for that word, tune in, wait for that word and text in the word and you are all set.

Good luck everybody.

It's a great contest.

We've had so much fun doing these here at Civic Media and this one's a great one too.

Great prizes too, especially with summer coming up.

I would totally go Chula Vista.

If the brewers turn it around, take the seats.

Conrad (producer)

Well, let's hope.

Or

Pete Chwaba (host)

if you're not a Rurer fan and your team is coming to town, maybe that's what you want to do.

But Chula Vista in the summer, you can't

Conrad (producer)

go wrong with

Pete Chwaba (host)

that, 100 bucks.

Then your pocket's pretty good too.

Let's see, what are we gonna do here?

Where should we go?

Hey, if you're going to the night, I wanna get this out there.

If you're going to the Wisconsin Film Festival this weekend, folks, don't forget at Flix Brew House, there is a night light with Peach Waba inspired beer called Hazed On Radio.

So starting Thursday, I believe, check it out and let me know, beer drinkers, I'm not a huge beer drinker.

I like beer, but I don't drink it regularly.

I haven't had any.

recently, but I would love to know what you think.

It's an IPA and if you're a beer connoisseur, I would love to get some feedback on the Hazed On Radio IPA that will be available during the Wisconsin Film Festival at Flix Brew House in East Town Mall in Madison.

That should be fun.

Are you going to try one?

I'll try to get my hands on one.

Conrad (producer)

Yeah.

Can you bring it back for me?

Pete Chwaba (host)

Yeah.

Conrad (producer)

It's a

Pete Chwaba (host)

tapper, so it'll be weird.

I'll have to carry it in the cart.

It might be a little flat, but that's how I'm

Conrad (producer)

going to do it.

Maybe you could get what are they called, those big cans.

I forget what they're called.

Pete Chwaba (host)

Big can of beer

Conrad (producer)

No, it's like they have a can they pour it in there and then they seal it.

Oh, they airlocked

Pete Chwaba (host)

tight, you

Conrad (producer)

know, I forget what they're called though.

Pete Chwaba (host)

I would do that for you Thanks, man.

I'm a giver What were you gonna say I kind of cut you off there?

Conrad (producer)

Oh, well, I was just gonna say we did get a text at 430.

Oh, that's right.

Pete Chwaba (host)

Yes, read that Saturday and that was

Conrad (producer)

that was bud

Pete Chwaba (host)

from a

Yeah, bud from Jamesville.

Let's let me let me track that text down.

Is it on the sheet or do I have to pull up the?

Conrad (producer)

Yep,

Pete Chwaba (host)

it's on the show.

There we go.

Hey, Pete, this is bud from Jamesville.

Why do I always think buds a trucker?

That's Tony the trucker, right?

Yeah, that is he from Jamesville, too.

I don't know why I get these guys.

Okay.

Bud says, hey, Pete, my daughter, Adrian shares a birthday with the USA July 4th.

Oh, that's good.

As a young lass, we told her the fireworks were in her honor.

There you go.

That's a blatant lie, bud.

She probably has some issues with her parents now, especially after that whole Santa Claus thing, too.

Thank you, bud.

Appreciate you listening.

Even at the ungodly hour you listen at, that's great to hear.

We got some help here at Growlers.

Conrad (producer)

This is what

Pete Chwaba (host)

they're called.

We have a couple of textures jumping in.

Tyler from Columbia County and Ross from Crawford County.

Announcer

Those

Pete Chwaba (host)

canned beers

Announcer

from breweries

Pete Chwaba (host)

are called Growlers.

the 124 ounce bottles that a lot of the people get are called Growlers.

Okay, Growlers, yeah, there we go.

All right, that's fantastic.

And lots to cover tonight.

We had, did you watch the tournament?

What do you think about four number one seeds?

Conrad (producer)

I mean, all right, so I was big on Texas Tech and they kind of fell apart there in the last three minutes.

But their point guard for Florida made...

three threes, just like turnarounds too.

Like you just

Pete Chwaba (host)

double back

Conrad (producer)

out, shot

Pete Chwaba (host)

it.

That was pretty

Conrad (producer)

incredible.

But you know, I'm kind of sad that there's no really Cinderella's this year.

Pete Chwaba (host)

I would say after we did all this hype about the tournament, I still love it.

It can't be gold every year.

Conrad (producer)

Yeah.

Pete Chwaba (host)

There weren't a ton of upsets and there weren't a ton of buzzer beaters.

Conrad (producer)

Yeah.

Pete Chwaba (host)

It

Conrad (producer)

was a fun year.

The final four, I'm excited to see Duke lose, hopefully.

Pete Chwaba (host)

Houston's my team now.

I'm going for Houston.

I like the coach.

Love how I thought those guys on Houston were like seven feet tall.

They're like six, eight, but they have that arm span.

They just play great defense.

They're fun to watch.

I don't know who else.

Conrad (producer)

Well, I

Pete Chwaba (host)

mean,

Conrad (producer)

I got Auburn.

Pete Chwaba (host)

OK,

Conrad (producer)

so, you know, I hope they can they can pull it off.

Pete Chwaba (host)

So you got Auburn in the pool.

Would you cheer for them anyway, even if you didn't have them?

I would have gone for Michigan State.

Yeah,

Conrad (producer)

just for the big 10.

Right.

Because there's no big 10 team in it, which kind of sucks.

Pete Chwaba (host)

That's correct.

Hey, if you're looking for something, if you are interested in the Wisconsin Film Festival, folks, check out later tonight the Wisconsin Film Festival Directors Cut episode, which I am the host of, airs on PBS Wisconsin.

You can also check it out at pbs.org.

All kinds of information about this year's festival, just like we've been talking about on this show.

It's a great show, we've been doing it for years, and you get to meet some directors, see little clips from their films.

And it's just a fun time and a lot of fun.

It gives you some insight into this year's festival, which should be another exciting time with great movies.

I was looking at the lineup.

I'm excited to introduce some films, host some Q&As, but you'll learn more if you check that out, that airs tonight, or you can see it online anytime.

Let's get to what I like to call our question of the night.

Announcer

Let's talk about

Pete Chwaba (host)

the question.

Okay, question.

Question.

Conrad (producer)

Question.

Pregunta.

Question.

Question.

Okay, I have a question.

Questions.

This question.

Domanda.

Question.

Question.

Questions.

Pete Chwaba (host)

In honor of National Prom Day, what celebrity would you like to take to the prom?

That's our question, folks.

What celebrity would you like to take to the prom and Amanda's had a funny answer to this because I said this is our question nice She's I didn't go to the prom like okay.

Well, what it's kind of hypothetical and then I realized she's just give me a hard time Yeah, like I really heard her feelings or something, but what celebrity would you like to take to the prom 8 5 5 7 5 2 4 8 4 2 8 5 5 7 5 civic you can text us on the app or on the stream

Anyway, you get ahold of us just get ahold of us love when you guys are part of the show and we get to read your answers on the radio Lots going on in the world of the business we call show too.

I saw a movie last night.

I'm gonna recommend we'll talk about this with Matt Miller When he comes by a little later last breath We rented it on Fandango at home paid the 20 bucks Woody Harrelson

Leads a crew of underwater divers that fix pipelines at the bottom of the ocean floor and One of the driver one of the divers gets trapped and they do a rescue mission.

It is a true story It doesn't even say based on a true story at the beginning of the film.

It says this is a true story So I don't know how close to what they were but it was really good and it's only an hour and a half long but it's riveting and this guy

who they rescued.

I won't tell you the exact ending, but it was without oxygen for 30 minutes, almost 300 feet below the surface in the ocean in the North Sea of the Atlantic Ocean.

30 minutes without oxygen.

So I recommend it.

It's one of those films too that was interesting because it was just about a crew coming together to help this guy.

There were no real bad guys.

There was no adversary, villain.

It was just everybody.

And that was kind of refreshing, because every movie, whether it's a rom-com, a thriller, or whatever, even your basic porno film, Conrad, has a foil.

I know you wouldn't know about that

Conrad (producer)

stuff.

Pete Chwaba (host)

But it's really good.

Highly recommend it.

Last breath, starring Woody Harrelson.

We've got a lot of fun playing for you guys tonight, so it's great to have you with us on this Monday.

We're going to talk to our guest.

Cliff Wall is here with Sam Venese.

Sam is a local veterinarian who is hoping his brother Jack, who is a Packers phenomenal administrator who's already in the Packers Hall of Fame.

They're trying to get him in the NFL Hall of Fame.

We'll talk about that.

Our buddy Matt Miller is here tonight to talk movies and TV.

And we're going to read your texts when we come back and talk about Saturday Night Live and Teletubbies.

You can't miss that, folks.

SPEAKER_??

you

Pete Schwabba (host)

Welcome back to Night Lights.

I'm Pete Schwabba, your loyal host, guiding us through this Monday night where we chase away all of our concerns of the day.

Whether it's work, we're being stuck in traffic or arguing with family, it's great to have you here.

Let's talk about

Entertainment, let's talk about some.

I would just met our guest Conrad out in the lobby.

They're here, Cliff Wall and Sam Venese.

And this is gonna be some really fun Bear Packard talk because both his brothers were like rock star executives, one with the bears and one with the Packards.

So you can imagine the turmoil in Sam's life.

But we'll talk about that with Sam and Cliff when they come in in just a few minutes.

Sherry checks in on the text line.

She's in the 9-2-0.

She says, good evening, Pete and Conrad.

Well, would you?

Oh, God.

She says, you would be fun, Pete, but Sam Elliott wins.

Yeah, I'm a pretty fun date, Sherry, I will say.

I might make you laugh, but my voice is not Sam Elliott.

I would ask Sam Elliott to the prom, just so I could be there with a cool guy.

Is that not weird?

No.

Yeah.

I mean, honestly, Sam Elliott would be a great wingman.

Oh, yeah.

I'd go up the girls.

Have you met my friend, movie star Sam Elliott?

Anna from Madison says, hi, Pete and Conrad.

I would take Don Johnson to the prom.

I would have him wear a pastel, Giorgio Armani suit and a t-shirt like he wore on Miami, on Miami Vice.

I've had a thing for him for years.

He'd be a good prom date.

Don Johnson as I understand it just based on what I've read was quite the partier back in the 80s and 90s So he would probably be a fun prom date.

I'm guessing Steve from Florida checks in from the 920 says Betty White would have been a good choice to take to the prom She definitely would have been the life of the prom with her natural and gifted humor.

Yeah, she would be great She'd have to clean up the language a little bit pretty potty mouth as she got older.

I don't know

Who I would take I used to have a big crush on Rosanna Arquette.

I Could take one of my exes Sidney Sweeney or Taylor Swift

Cameo Keith

I don't know about Sidney Sweeney Glenn Powell might be

Pete Schwabba (host)

mad.

He might be taking her off the market Julia Ormond is another one.

I would maybe ask this is let me clarify this Assuming my wife said no or couldn't go and I didn't have a wife when I went to prom anyway.

I would maybe say Julia Ormond one of the great beauties.

I love her

Tom from New Berlin says, where can I find a prom date?

Tom, I can point you in a direction, but I'm not like, I'm not the guy with all the sweet hookups.

What about you came in?

Who you taking to prom?

Cameo Keith

You know, I think I'd take Scarlett Johansson.

Pete Schwabba (host)

Oh, she's great.

I love Scarlett Johansson.

Cameo Keith

Just so I could pick her up and Colin Joest would see it.

Pete Schwabba (host)

Yeah.

And look out concerned.

Cameo Keith

And then he maybe have a week weekend update on it.

Pete Schwabba (host)

Listen, young Krieger, you be a gentleman.

This is a big day for, keep those texts coming folks, we'll read them.

Who, what celebrity would you ask to the prom?

It is national prom, prom day or prom date?

No, I'm getting confused here.

Cameo Keith

National prom day?

Pete Schwabba (host)

National prom, national prom day, yes.

Seems a little early for prom.

A little too cold.

Yeah.

It's also, it's also a national tater day.

So that was going to be my other question.

How do you like your potato?

Like, what's a better way?

I stay

Conrad

away

Pete Schwabba (host)

from food.

Just giving us a little breather with food before we jump back into the food questions.

But that would have been a good one, too.

So, all right, Conrad says, Scarlett Johansson, I'm gonna say Julia Ormond.

That's who I would ask to the prom.

And, you know.

I would hope she'd say yes, but who knows, right?

Phone lines are open, folks, 855-752-4842-855-75 civic.

The teletubbies dropped on this day in 1997.

And I don't know if you remember this, but there was a huge controversy when the teletubbies come out that one of them was gay.

First of all, they're child toys.

Best of my knowledge, they don't really identify.

with one sexual preference or the other.

But it was, it was insane.

It was like people lost their minds over this stuff.

Cameo Keith

I always thought of them as like really scary to be honest.

I could see that.

And the sun in the background with the face on it scared, scared me even more.

Pete Schwabba (host)

Did you have one?

Now this would have been like just four years or five years before you were born or three.

So they were probably kind of a thing when you were a kid still, right?

Cameo Keith

I mean, I don't really remember.

Well, I remember being scared of them though.

Pete Schwabba (host)

Hmm.

I remember dads everywhere.

We're like, don't play with the gay one.

That's the kind of stuff you'd see on, like before there was social media, there were sketches about that.

I think on Saturday Night Live, like people want nods.

They were very scared.

I've been watching way too much TV folks.

I don't know what you guys are watching.

Feel free to share it.

I just talked about a movie I saw last breath.

I'm excited to talk about that with Matt Miller, but...

I am watching way too much color television right now.

I just finished Reacher, season three, really liked it.

Liked it better than season two.

Eight episodes, got through it pretty quickly.

1923, I'm like five episodes into that.

Our buddy Jamie McShane, who's been on the show, is one of the cast members of that.

He plays a Marshall, Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are the stars.

Pretty good.

a little slower than season one, but I'm digging it.

I'm only one episode into adolescence.

I thought I would jam through adolescence over the weekend and watch, you know, maybe bang out like two or three more episodes, but I didn't get to it.

I'm still watching Severance and a show called Dope Thief on Apple TV, which is about these guys that poses DEA agents and rip off drug dealers, kind of a Robin Hood type thing.

But...

Lots of good TV on right now.

Lots of good stuff to binge.

We'd love to hear what you guys are, what you guys are watching as well.

Coming up in just a few minutes, Sam Venesi will be here with Cliff Wall.

They're a package deal.

These guys are great guys.

They're coming in here.

We're going to talk about Jack Venesi and whether or not he should be in the NFL Hall of Fame.

He's already in the Packer Hall of Fame.

And Sam has a brother, Jerry Venesi, who helped build the 85 Bears.

So I believe Sam is a tried-and-true Packer fan, but we will talk to him about that.

We'll have some good Bear Packer talk there.

Then Matt Miller joins us at 720.

What celebrity would you ask to the prom?

That's tonight's question, 855-752-4842, 855-75 Civic.

We're going to do the news, folks.

Civic media reporters are waiting to tell you what's up, and then we're going to come back, talk a little Bears Packers, and a really cool, you know,

Sam is a veterinarian and he like revolutionized eye surgery for pets So he's got that going too.

I've done none of this stuff But we're gonna learn all about it coming up next on nightlight with peach wava on the civic media radio network

Pete Schwab

Welcome back.

I'm Pete Schwab.

This is Night Light.

Great to have you with me on this Monday night.

Our question tonight is, what celebrity would you take to prom?

It is National Prom Day.

Tom said earlier, where can I find a prom date?

And he says, do I need social media?

I probably wouldn't hurt Tom.

You ever made a date off social media, Conrad?

Conrad

No.

No?

Pete Schwab

No.

Okay.

Me either.

But I've been married since before social media,

Conrad

so.

Yeah, that makes sense

Pete Schwab

then, yeah.

Tyler from Wisconsin Rapids says, Sissy Spacek might be fun.

Which is funny because Mike Dessertel, when we asked a question on Facebook, Mike said, anyone but Carrie.

One guy wants nothing to do with Carrie, the other guy wants to take her to prom.

I don't know what that says about you guys, but Monica from Mount Horrib says, Andy Garcia, he's got a sexy voice, has aged well, and I'm stereotyping here, but I'm assuming he can dance well.

Okay.

That's a good answer.

I personally am not attracted to Andy Garcia, but he's a fine actor.

Thank you, Monica.

Gordy from Oregon, Wisconsin says, it's been 54 years since my last prom.

If my 18-year-old self could take an 18-year-old Demi Moore.

Oh my God, heaven.

Well, you can wish, Gordy, that's what we're doing here.

We're just having fun.

Conrad's mom checks in and says, Hugh Jackman, not only handsome, but he can dance and sing.

Paul, you would be the envy of the prom, but I'm not sure how Conrad's dad would feel about that.

But keep those answers coming, folks.

Also, Christy Barlamint said on our Facebook, you can always weigh in on social media too.

She says, Ed the Diver, for sure.

Well, that wasn't a stretch.

We knew she'd pick it, right?

Kathleen on Facebook says, Pee Wee.

He would be a blast.

Pee Wee.

Sam Venesey

Herman?

Pete Schwab

Yeah.

Unless there's another Pee Wee.

I'm kind of a weird nickname.

Eric Rathsack from Ask Your Mother says, Pete, he's fun.

Thank you, Eric.

I'd be honored to go to prom with you.

You'd be the tallest guy there.

And I would totally make you my wingman, buddy.

I would love to go to prom with you.

Sherry says Sam Elliott, of course.

Sherry has said that twice, so we obviously know she has a crush on Sam Elliott.

All right, we are going to turn our attention now to some fun.

Packer talk?

Packer bear talk?

We'll even work in a car, some new cars somehow.

It's going to be a fun segment, folks.

It's my pleasure now to welcome to Nightlight for the first time ever in the studio.

Sam Venesey and Cliff Wall are here.

And Sam, I'll give background on you guys.

Sam is the brother of Jack Venesey, who is the Packers, well, see the VP of, what was your brother's title there, Sam?

Sam Venesey

Well, he started as a scout and then he ended up being the personal director.

Personal director.

Right.

Okay.

And business manager also in a sense when Venesey was there.

Pete Schwab

When Vince Lombardi was there, and Paul Horning had great things to say about your brother, it was really fun to read about him.

He's in the Packer Hall of Fame, but you guys are hoping to get him into the NFL Hall of Fame.

Sam Venesey

Correct.

Pete Schwab

All right, so Cliff Wall is here too.

Speaking of wingmen, he's being a good friend here

Sam Venesey

with

Pete Schwab

Sam.

Great to have you guys here.

And you were a car dealer owner, Cliff, right?

Cliff Wall

Family-owned dealership since 1929.

Wow.

Got out in 2020, March of 2020, which is...

You know that history of COVID.

Yeah.

Good time

Pete Schwab

to sell.

Good for you.

Did you ever sell a pack or a car?

Cliff Wall

Oh, yeah, sure.

Well, I have a nice photo of my father delivering a car to Bart Starr.

Oh, no kidding.

And also one with Bob Skaronsky.

And of course, when I merged with the Cadillac dealer, Dave DeNeal, we sold a lot of packers.

Al Harris.

And I using selling to a pack was a little different was you were selling to an agent and then the okay player came and picked it up But I mean yeah, what kind of card at Bart star by he bought a Would have been a 67 Oldsville 98, okay, and This is I can tell you a little story.

I don't want to get too far off Jack when he sees no, that's okay anyway, so the old the Oldsville rep at the time found out about it and he said

Well, we got to get a picture in the, at least in the Oldsmobile publication.

I'd like to get it in the General Motors publication for the employees.

So Bart, if you knew Bart, he was very kind, very nice person.

Yeah.

And Bart said, sure, well, sure, I'll pose for a picture and no problem.

You can put it in the thing, into the GM Oldsmobile publications for the employees.

And about two months later, he called up my father and said,

Cliff I'm sorry, but I just took I just became a partner in a Lincoln Mercury dealership Down in Birmingham, Alabama, and it probably is not a good idea to have a picture of in the GM publication So we did give morning, I don't think it ever got in the publication.

I think they Nixed it.

It sounds like he did okay, but yeah, right, but I did get anyway do have a nice photo with my father, you know LeRan Carter.

Yeah, and I think he also kind of

He was a good friend, of course, with Bob Skaransky.

And I think he kind of pushed Bob to say, you better go buy a car

Pete Schwab

from Cliff Wall.

So we appreciate that.

That's a pretty modest car, though, right?

For Bart Starr.

I mean, an Oldsmobile?

That's not like he's driving around in a big Cadillac or anything.

Cliff Wall

Well, yeah.

But remember, when you sell Oldsmobiles, that was the smart man's Cadillac.

OK.

That's

Sam Venesey

a great sales pitch.

Bart was that type of a guy.

It seems like.

He didn't want to

Pete Schwab

show off.

That's great.

All right, so it's great to have you guys here Sam.

Let's let's jump into so so Jack is part of the Packer Hall of Fame and You guys are making a push to try to get him into the NFL Hall of Fame

Sam Venesey

As a contributor

Pete Schwab

as a contributor.

Okay, so what does that entail?

How difficult is that?

Sam Venesey

Extremely difficult Especially since you have so many owners that are being admitted into the hall now as they contributors

And they usually pick, I think, about 50 that are considered to be picked by the sports writers, and so they pick three out of those 50, and that's not easy.

Wow.

So we're hopeful that Jack's been nominated.

Pete already nominated Jack about 10, 12 years ago.

And not this past year, but the year before Jack was selected in that group of 50 to be considered, and he didn't make the cut.

This year he didn't make it in the fifth day.

I'm hoping next year he does get it in the fifth day.

Pete Schwab

Is it like, I think, what do they take five players a year that are eligible after five years?

When someone is trying to get in posthumously, is it, is that more of an uphill climb?

Because you're picking from all the people who haven't gotten in, right?

Sam Venesey

I mean, it seems like it's a real uphill climb.

Extremely difficult.

Extremely

Pete Schwab

difficult.

Do you need people, like, does it help if you get more sportswriters to go to bat for him or former players?

Sam Venesey

Absolutely.

And we're hoping that, you know, all these sports writers are going to be at this raft.

And with Clip's support, with her digital, we're going to have a program.

And I'm going to be sitting next to Jack's monument there in a little tent showing his wall of fame that I have in my clinic.

And hopefully we'll get enough signatures that it'll make an impression.

Cliff Wall

Yeah, I hope so.

So look for those petitions around.

Town

Sam Venesey

come coming up to

Cliff Wall

the draft because we figure if we get 250,000 for the draft Maybe more.

Yeah We get them all to sign that petition.

I mean that that's our goal is get get as many signatures as you can right?

That's so they can't say no They can't say no Jerry Kramer.

That's how they got Jerry Kramer and they got petitions and in support form So that's really the that's the goal and and look look for Jack on the corner of

of Ridge Road and Lombardi look for his little tent and find out more about it.

And he'll definitely tell you a lot tonight, I hope so.

Pete Schwab

Yeah, that's so cool.

And you can't go wrong when players are saying stuff like this is a quote from Paul Horning.

I loved Jack Venesi.

All the players did.

He was a football man.

That's what he was pure and simple.

He brought so much talent to Green Bay, but it took Lombardi to make us champions.

Like that doesn't happen without great moves and bringing the players.

You get the coach, you get the players.

Sam, let's say, okay, let's say you're the NFL Hall of Fame and I want to hear why Jack should be on, say some nice things about your brother.

What did he do other than what I just read?

Sam Venesey

Well, think of Titletown and think of the reason we call it Titletown.

You have to think Vince Lombardi.

Who brought Vince Lombardi to Green Bay?

It was Jack.

There you go.

They were personal friends.

If you remember, they really tried hard to get Forrest Foschewski.

That was Dominic Olnichek, who was the president at that time.

That was his choice, and they tried very hard.

I always tell people, they offered him the City of Green Bay, the key of the city.

and they even included an orphan hotel on the offer.

I'm just joking, of course, but they really tried hard to get him.

And Jack was so relieved when they didn't get him because they needed a disciplinarian.

If you remember that last year where they have one in 10, the record, and Scooter was a wonderful guy, but he was part of the team, you might say.

They just needed somebody, a good disciplinarian.

Jack knew.

Vince Lombardi.

He knew he was a disciplinarian.

The coach environment, I'm trying to think of his name right now, Blake, Colonel Blake.

Vince worked with him and then of course went with the Giants and had a very good reputation there.

But Jack had just known him personally and he felt this is the guy that can turn things around.

But he had to convince...

the president and the board, that this is the man.

And finally, when they turned down Vince Lombardi, Jack called George Hallis, who was a personal friend.

We grew up together.

And Paul Brown, who loved Jack, and tried a couple of times to woo Jack the Cleveland from Green Bay.

And the commissioner, the name escapes me for a second and he'll think of it.

Bert Bell.

Nice.

So Jack talked to all three of them, and they all called and talked to the Olenichek.

And they said, if you can get Vince Lombardi, grab him.

And so he was willing to talk to Vince Lombardi.

Vince came up, and that was history.

Pete Schwab

My guests are Dr. Sam Vinisee, who is Jack Vinisee's brother, who is in the Packer Hall of Fame, and Cliff Wall, former auto dealer to the stars, I would say, here in Northeast Wisconsin, right?

Fairly

Cliff Wall

accurate.

Fairly accurate, yeah.

Big evidences unfairly.

Pete Schwab

To your modest, just like your clients and Bart Starder.

So, okay, and I would think like bringing Lombardi here, you know, as an administrator, as an executive, that's a huge get too.

He had no ties to Green Bay, right?

When they hired him, he lived on the East Coast, right?

Sam Venesey

Absolutely.

His wife said, where is Green Bay?

I never heard of the place.

Pete Schwab

So to get him to come here, too, might have taken some convincing.

Sam Venesey

Well, I think he was ready.

And I think he was looking for, you know, a coaching head coaching job.

And this was an opportunity.

And he knew that Jack had some good players.

And that was one of the decisions I think that helped him was he knew that there were a lot of good ball players that were just sitting idle.

Cliff Wall

So just as a side light.

Sam was a little modest here about his brother, but he has Jack has 14 people in the pro football Hall of Fame 13 13 people excuse me 13

Pete Schwab

appreciate your honesty

Cliff Wall

Sam 13 people that he's associated with there in the pro football Hall of Fame more than anybody else way more kidding and I think if Vince Lombardi was would not have been in Green Bay

Green Bay would not have a big stadium named Lombardi right now.

I really believe that.

Pete Schwab

Is there a special section in the Hall of Fame for executives or a different label or are they just lumped in with players and coaches and everybody?

Sam Venesey

I think they're a lumped in.

This past year they had three sports announcers that were in the Hall of Fame.

Normally it would think sports announcers would be in the Sports Hall of Fame rather than the NFL Hall of Fame.

So it's pretty broad.

Pete Schwab

Okay.

That's interesting.

So you kind of, we'll get into this next, but let me, actually, let me, before we move on, Cliff, how are you, like, you're not related to Jack.

How do you play in here?

I know you're involved and you want this to happen, but what do you do as Sam's friend and Jack's friend, and what's your role in this?

Well, I got

Cliff Wall

introduced to Sam by his son, Sam.

Okay.

I said, well, that sounds like a project.

That sounds like someone that should be in there.

Let's

Pete Schwab

pick up there.

We're going to do a very quick break, and then we'll jump into more of this.

And then Sam has a great history.

His brother was an executive.

also a hotshot executive for the Chicago Bears.

So I can't even imagine the conflict and turmoil that went on in your house.

But it sounds like you've figured out where your alliances are.

We'll get into all this and more.

Matt Miller is here at 720 to talk movies.

Right now, after this very short break, we'll have more with Sam Vinici and Cliff Wall.

This is Peach Waba and Nightlight on the Civic Media Radio Network.

Pete Schwab (host)

Welcome

back.

This is Nightlight.

I am Pete Schwab.

It's great to have you with me on this Monday night.

It's a little early for NFL talk, but not really, because the draft is here in Green Bay in just a few weeks.

Joining me here in the studio right now are Sam Venesey and Cliff Wall.

Sam, I know we're here talking about your your star studded executive family But I do want to touch on some of the work you did too because you did some pretty cool stuff in your field Which what you were a veterinarian very well known you're actually Dr. Sam Vinisee, but you're here as a fan.

So I hope Sam is okay All right, so so Sam's brother Jack is there Cliff

and Sam and many others are trying to get him into the NFL Hall of Fame.

He's already a member of the Packer Hall of Fame.

He was a rock star executive for the organization, brought Vince Lombardi to Green Bay.

very exciting background, but you have the reason I say you might be a little conflicted is because you kind of grew up.

We grew up very close in the same neighborhood, not the same neighborhood, but you weren't too far away.

I grew up in the Jefferson Park area of Chicago and you were at California in Peterson, you said?

Peterson Woods is right.

Wow.

Okay, so we were practically neighbors.

You were probably gone by the time I was born, but you and your brothers grew up in that area and you have a great story about how your brother Jack got so interested in the NFL.

Please share that story.

Sam Venesee

Well, my father had a grocery store, actually a grocery store, a delicatessen.

Wilson Avenue and that was very close to Wrigley Field and right across the street from the store was a shared Plaza Hotel and that's where the majority of players that didn't have their home bases in the area would stay and so after the Bears had to have their practice the number of them would come down into my dad's store, which was just usually about eight o'clock at night and

They would, dad would make them a sub.

Well, a sub in those days was a big loaf of Vienna bread, piled with ham and salami and cheese and tomatoes and lettuce.

Probably cost a buck and a half at that time.

But each player would order one of those and have it cooked.

We didn't, dad didn't sell beverages that were any more than sodas.

And so we got to know quite a few of them.

And of course my mother,

got to know them all.

And being that she had a son that was very interested in football, she would invite dad and both of them.

They would actually invite several players to come over for Thanksgiving if they had no place to go.

Pete Schwab (host)

They'd

Sam Venesee

share a Thanksgiving dinner with us.

And then my dad decided to have an Italian night dinner so he could invite six or seven.

And he'd invite them over.

And of course, Jack was just late.

late high school, I mean late grammar school, maybe early high school, and I would just, and of course I was four years younger, so I was really small and young, and I would sit on their laps, and Jack would sit on the floor, and the football players, and they were giants, I mean, you go back to Bronco Nagorski, Bulldog Journal, Jordan Musso, Danny Fortman, Joe Steinhardt, they would all be there, and...

and they would tell stories.

And I would, of course, just sit on their lap and they'd be jiggling me around on their knee, but they'd be telling Jack stories.

And he was just mesmerized.

And he just fell in love with football.

And that had a big, big part of what he wanted

Pete Schwab (host)

to do.

Wow, obvious.

And he turned it into a phenomenal career.

as an executive.

All right, now, you have another brother, Jerry, who went on to do very similar work for the Bears and helped build the 85 Bears.

So what was that like?

I mean, where does he fall in line in that order?

Sam Venesee

Well, Jerry, of course, was quite a bit younger.

He was actually 10 years younger than me, so he'd be 14 years younger than Jack.

And Jerry was an accountant.

He had worked for Arthur.

Arthur Anderson.

And then he decided to finish up.

He wanted to be a lawyer also, so he went to law school, got his degree in that, passed the bar.

And then he was still close friends with Muggsy, who was a boy.

Pete Schwab (host)

Muggsy Hallis.

Muggsy Hallis, because

Sam Venesee

we were up together and played together.

Wow.

And then they asked Jack, you know, they asked Jerry,

if he would have considered coming in to be in their control or in their attorney for the Bears.

And which, of course, Jerry jumped at.

He just loved it because he just got a football.

Jerry couldn't play football.

He had asthma.

And so sports were a difficult endurance for him.

But he came in.

And then when Mugsy Hell has passed away, unfortunately, a number of years,

I'm trying to think exactly what I'm

Pete Schwab (host)

not sure.

It's like 83 maybe or something.

Right in that range.

I

Sam Venesee

know it was right after a game here in Green

Pete Schwab (host)

Bay.

Sam Venesee

I sat with Muggsy and Jerry in the box at the back as we're beating the Bears.

And Muggsy said, Sam, aren't we ever going to make you a bear fan again?

And I said, I'm sorry.

And then poor Muggs died that next day.

Wow.

And so then Jack...

Our jury kind of became a surrogate son for George Ellis.

Pete Schwab (host)

Oh, no kidding

Sam Venesee

cuz he didn't that was the only son that he had and so they were very close and then come in the early 80s George asked Jerry said I'm gonna make you general manager I'm bringing in my ticket and I want you guys to win a championship and They did they did in a couple of years.

They made a few they have already had a good team, but they made a huge a few couple of changes

And, of course, they won that Super Bowl.

And I was a kid.

I said, Jerry's my younger brother's the only general manager with a Super Bowl ring.

Pete Schwab (host)

All right, this is great, and I want to add I've got a few more questions about that So we'll do that after the news Civic media's reporters are waiting to tell you what's up.

Sam Venese is here brother of Jack Venese who is a candidate for the pro football Hall of Fame already in the Packers Hall of Fame Cliff Wall is here riding shotgun also part of that mission and We'll talk more about this after the news.

It's peach wabba and nightlight on the Civic media radio network

Pete Chwaba

Broadcasting live from the Civic Media Studios in Green Bay.

This is Night Light with Pete Chwaba.

Your inside source on everything entertainment from Wisconsin to Hollywood.

And now, a guy who appreciates a nice hot meal at a fair price.

Pete Chwaba.

That's me, baby.

Love.

a good hot meal at a fair price.

Matt Miller will be here at 720 folks to talk about movies and TV, Madison.

He's way ahead of me in the game when it comes to movies.

He's all caught up.

I am getting there, but Matt will tell us what's up.

On the text line, our question of the night, ladies and gentlemen, is what celebrity would you ask to go to the prom?

And I said Julia Ormond, Conrad said Scarlett Johansson.

My guest tonight right now, here in studio, this is so much fun, are Sam Venesey and Cliff Wall.

And you guys said, tell me who you said you'd take to the prom, Sam.

Sam Venese

Oh, in my age, Doris Day.

Doris Day.

He was my sweetheart.

Pete Chwaba

Beautiful.

That's a

Cliff Wall

good choice, Cliff.

Well, I better say Betty Stone, Cliff, because that's my wife.

However, my second choice would be Jane Seymour.

Pete Chwaba

If your wife couldn't make it, Jane would be a trooper

Cliff Wall

and go in her stead.

Pete Chwaba

Yeah.

Cliff Wall

Well, my wife actually told me, she said, I probably, if he would have asked me to go to the prom now, she's from Escanaba.

She probably would have said no anyway, but so I might have had a better chance with Jane.

Pete Chwaba

Chris from Salk County, he's in the 608.

He says, are she, he or she, it's Chris Conrad.

What do you do?

You got to play it safe.

Conrad (producer)

Yeah.

Pete Chwaba

It's like Terry or, but Chris says Jason Momoa.

because I would choose him for everything.

Being Aquaman, being a superhero, going to prom, all those things work.

And then help me with this next text here.

Conrad (producer)

I think that's a new description we get for...

Pete Chwaba

I like this.

This involves you guys too.

Packers, prom, and pro football hall of fame dreams.

Pete Chihuahua kicks off... I've heard worse with my last name.

Pete Chihuahua kicks off a lively Monday night in Wisconsin with a mix of entertainment, sports, and quirky questions.

Pete and his producer Conrad

Miss Bell.

Dive into the woes of the Brewers, the Packers legacy and the campaign to get Jack Vanesey into the Hall of Fame, the NFL Hall of Fame.

Special guest Sam Vanesey shares tales from his family's storied NFL history, including his brother's instrumental role in bringing Vince Lombardi to Green Bay.

A spirited debate unfolds on which celebrity listeners to take to prom with choices ranging from Scarlett Johansson to Sam Elliott.

The show promises a blend of humor, nostalgia, and sports fervor.

Whoever wrote that, please identify yourself.

That was

Conrad (producer)

great.

to be honest

Pete Chwaba

somebody went to chat gpt to send in a text

Conrad (producer)

no no one sent that in that that's for us no there's no text relation to that okay I

Pete Chwaba

don't know what to make of

Conrad (producer)

that I don't know this is the first day I'm seeing this happens

Pete Chwaba

okay

Maybe it'd be a normal thing.

My guests are Sam Venese and Cliff Wall, and that last text pretty much summed it up.

Sam's brother Jack was a Packers executive, brought Vince Lombardi to Green Bay.

That's a pretty big deal, folks.

He's in the Packer Hall of Fame.

Cliff Wall and Sam, his brother, are here tonight talking about a campaign to get him into the NFL Hall of Fame.

And tell us again, guys, how you plan to do that with the draft coming to town.

Perfect opportunity, right?

Cliff Wall

Perfect opportunity.

Again.

I'll put some words in Sam's mouth, but he's going to be in a tent on the corner of Ridge Road and Lombardi Avenue trying to get signatures from everybody that's going to watch the NFL draft.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Pete Chwaba

It's a pup tent.

It's a two-person thing, so it's a bit of a chore.

Not many people

Cliff Wall

are going to...

Pete Chwaba

It's going to be a canopy.

Cliff Wall

A big actual tent.

So we have to recruit some people to...

walk around with them, put the tent up and walk around with petitions to sign it and yeah.

Pete Chwaba

That's exciting.

So you're on the board at Heritage Hill, you just told me.

Cliff Wall

Part of the selfish reason to get involved is because Heritage Hill, like a lot of places in Green Bay are trying to figure out how can we utilize the draft to get visitors and obviously bring some dollars into the park.

And I thought this would be a good thing to have Sam

talk about his brother and be a mission for both of us, really, get visitors here to chill.

So what we decided to do on April 25th, which is the Friday of the draft, we're going to have, well, Sam can tell you a little bit more, but Sam is going to start the program talking about Jack and why he should be in the pro football hall of fame.

It's going to go from one till three.

So you still have time to get to the draft and get a fish fry.

Friday night in Wisconsin, you know, yeah in Green Bay fashion.

Sure.

So we're gonna have Well, we're trying to get cool.

We're trying to get some David Menera Menaris Moranus used to be David Moranus and Guy named Mike Lombardi.

No relation by the way.

Yeah, how about that?

Yeah, talk talking about why Jack should be in the pro football Hall of Fame.

So now turn over to

to Sam to carry on with that.

Pete Chwaba

Well, before we do that, is there somewhere people can find out online more about the campaign you guys are doing?

You want to give a website or social media?

Sam Venese

Well, it's already on social media.

Cliff Wall

Yeah, share it.

Facebook, around Facebook, share it because I've been on the board of Heritage Hill.

I've been sharing their April 25th program.

But we don't have like a...

Get Jack in the pro football hall of fame dot com or anything.

Okay.

Yeah, it's it's more of a we'll call it a grassroots effort I hope you guys are successful.

It's exciting.

Sam Venese

Well, we're gonna have a half a dozen speakers and I'll probably start out the program just basically talking about how Jack got interested and take us for his childhood all the way up to when he came to Green Bay with Gene Runzani and The Mourningbirds It was all about Jack.

It's up one of my old

one of my old clients, in fact.

But he's gonna talk about Jack, and the day before he's gonna talk a little bit about having a program about the ice bowl.

But then, the third party is gonna be Jack's daughter, Valerie, Valerie Husser.

She's gonna show a video that Bob Hool made that was shown when Jack was inducted into the Hall of Green Bay Hall of Fame back in 85.

And then, of course, we've got

Mike Lombardi.

Mike Lombardi is not related to Vince Lombardi.

Mike Lombardi, he's got three Super Bowl rings.

The Patriots, right?

Yeah.

He worked with Belichick.

He worked with Walsh.

He worked with the... I think he went

Pete Chwaba

somewhere else after that, too.

He's a very successful guy.

Sam Venese

Yeah, and right now he's destroying Belichick, who's going to be the coach at North Carolina.

Mike is gonna be his general manager.

So he's gonna be on the program.

And then of course, Dave Robinson, great football star.

He's gonna be on the program.

Roy Spoils used to be a sports announcer in Green Bay.

He's written several books.

He's gonna be on the program.

So I think we've got really a good staff.

Hopefully we're trying to get a few words from David Moranis.

He's of course a very busy, busy fellow.

And still, but hopefully we can get some words of that.

I know he feels that Jack should be as a contributor in the Hall of Fame, so hopefully he'll give us a good quote and we'll go from there.

Pete Chwaba

Sam Venese is my guest, along with Cliff Wall, two guys trying to get Jack Venese into the NFL Hall of Fame.

Jack is already a member of the Packer Hall of Fame and is largely responsible for bringing Vince Lombardi, maybe you heard of him, to Green Bay here.

Sam, you went on to study...

You were a veterinarian, very successful one, but you have these two brothers.

Are you in the middle?

Sam Venese

I'm the second one.

We have a we have a daughter, a sister.

Okay.

And who's a few years behind me.

And then of course, 10 years behind me is Jerry.

Was your sister a

Pete Chwaba

famous executive too, or just the brothers?

Sam Venese

No, I think she's very jealous of the three boys.

Pete Chwaba

All right.

So you've got you grew up in Chicago.

You've got Jack.

who did phenomenal things here in Green Bay.

Your brother, Jerry, worked for the Bears.

When did you become a Packer fan?

Sam Venese

When Jack came up here.

Okay.

Pete Chwaba

You followed, you actually moved here.

Sam Venese

When I graduated from Iowa State, I practiced for a year in Burwin, Illinois, which you're familiar with.

Sure.

And Jack said, Sam, what are you gonna do?

And I said, well, I'm gonna start my own practice.

He said, why don't you come up to Green Bay?

He said, you know, you love to fish, you love to hunt.

He said, Green Bay, we need a small animal doctor up here.

Most of the doctors did small animal work.

So they came up here and I practiced for a while.

But my real interest was ophthalmology.

I wanted to be a veterinary ophthalmologist.

So I stayed here for five years and then went back and got my degree in ophthalmology.

And

Pete Chwaba

that's what you specialized

Sam Venese

with animals?

That's what I specialized in.

I'm retired now, but that's what I specialized in.

Pete Chwaba

If you were called back into work in an emergency, do you think you could

Sam Venese

I think I could get the hang of it again.

Well, probably not surgery.

At that point, the only reason I retired is because I could feel that my hands were getting a little shaky.

And I did mainly retinal detachment surgery.

And I had to have pretty steady hands for that.

Pete Chwaba

Is walleye vision a real thing?

Absolutely.

I remember it in the movie, Hot Shots.

And I thought it was a joke.

And then I'm like, oh no, it's an actual

Cliff Wall

thing.

Pete Chwaba

Okay.

Cliff, do you like, do you like Jack's chances?

Cliff Wall

I really do.

I think, I think this is the opportunity with the draft in town to get just thousands and thousands of signatures.

Yeah.

And, you know, all those, all the sports writers, probably all the voting sports writers are going to be in town also.

Now, how do we connect with them?

Not sure.

Yeah.

But I guess just spread the word, being on your show, Pete, and, you know, around the, around the Wisconsin.

Oh, I hope it helps.

Pete Chwaba

Yeah.

This is fun, because I had no idea when I booked you guys that you had these ties.

Well, I figured Jerry Vinise was your brother, too.

But I love that turmoil growing up in a house that starts off as Bears fans.

And then this rivalry exists, but it exists in your own house.

Like you've taken it to another level.

Sam Venese

Well, we never took it serious.

I think we just wish the best for each other sir and And had Jack been alive when Jerry no became what he what what he was The general manager he would have just you know, he would have been joyous over the whole thing No, they

There was enough love there not to worry about jealousy.

Cliff Wall

Sure.

Oh, I'm sure.

Although I gotta say, I'm a bit jealous because I thought this was about the Packers and we're mostly talking about the Bears.

Listen,

Pete Chwaba

I've had about enough of your nonsense.

That's

Cliff Wall

all I've said.

If you don't

Pete Chwaba

steer this conversation back to the Packers, I will get you in a headlock and I will whip your ass

in your own studio.

How do you like

that?

So how do you guys like the Packers' chances this upcoming year?

They're in a very tough division, just as fans.

What do you guys think?

The Bears should be better.

The Lions are great.

Minnesota had a good year.

We'll see what happens.

But how do you like the Packers chances this coming year?

Cliff Wall

We don't want to answer yet.

We want to wait and see what the draft looks like.

Sam Venese

They've got a tough schedule.

Yeah.

Really tough schedule.

Pete Chwaba

For sure.

Do you, let me ask you this, Sam, do you ever cheer for the Bears?

Do you ever go back, revert back to your childhood when the Packers aren't playing or if the Packers were eliminated from the playoffs and the Bears were still, that hasn't happened in about 30 years.

Sam Venese

No, I enjoy, I enjoy seeing them lose.

Pete Chwaba

Music to Green Bay's ears.

You guys, this was so much fun.

I wish you luck with your campaign.

I hope your brother gets into the NFL Hall of Fame.

It sounds certainly deserving.

That would be great.

Cliff Wall

So anyway, Jordan loves going to be healthy.

are going to go all the way this year.

All right, Cliff.

There you go.

And then the other phrase I have to get in is, you know, the Bears motto is rebuilding since 1985.

Conrad, we're going to edit that out later.

Pete Chwaba

OK, guys, thanks so much.

It was great meeting you, Sam and Cliff.

Good luck with your efforts.

We'll be right back with Milwaukee film critic Matt Miller.

He might want to weigh in on this, too, Conrad.

You never know.

You know how mad it is.

We'll talk to Matt next.

It's Pete Schwab and Nightlight on the Civic Media radio

network.

Peach Wabba (host)

Welcome back!

Our question of the night in honor of National Prom Day is what celebrity would you like to take to the prom?

We've had some pretty interesting answers.

But get in on the fun, folks.

It's 855-752-4842-855-756.

Civic on the stream.

Craig says, Pete, the kid in episode three of Adolescents was brilliant.

Not a weak spot in his performance at all.

I agree with you, Craig.

I'm only one episode in, but I really like it.

So it's one of those shows.

I'm like carving out time because I want to sit and be uninterrupted.

Love the idea that it's all one shot.

And so far, I really like it, but I appreciate people not doing spoiler alerts here.

Christine in the 4014 says, John Candy is who she would take to prom.

Oh, that would be, why don't you love to hang out with John Candy?

That would be so, so great, so funny.

Prom or not, I just like to pal around with the guy.

Yeah, definitely.

Chris from Salk County says, Chris, is she her?

Thank you, Chris.

I didn't wanna, I don't wanna get that wrong.

I immediately thought.

That's how far we've come in our society.

Conrad, I see the name Chris.

I immediately assume it's a guy.

We made great progress.

All right.

Thank you, Chris, for clarifying that.

All right.

It is time for some movie and entertainment talk with our pal from Milwaukee.

He's a film critic who does fine work and his name is Matt Miller.

He's been here before.

Hey, Matt.

Hey, howdy.

Thanks for having me.

Great to have you, buddy.

How are you?

How are you?

I'm

Matt Miller (film critic)

doing great.

I'm doing swell.

It's Monday.

It'd be nice if the Brewers won this season, but we're saving it.

Peach Wabba (host)

Here's how far behind I am at.

I feel at my stage in life, I have one sport I can follow.

And I choose the NFL because it's 17 games.

It's once a week.

I can handle that.

Baseball or basketball, if my team does something, I'll start to follow.

But I'm just getting into basketball now with the tournament.

And Conrad had to tell me the Brewers have been outscored like 40 to something or whatever.

It's

Matt Miller (film critic)

crazy.

Yeah, they've they've lost by touchdowns these last few games.

It's been a rough go.

Peach Wabba (host)

But you

Matt Miller (film critic)

know what, last season they started really hot and then they kind of fell apart at the end of the season.

And maybe this year they're just flipping the script a little bit and they're starting off real slow this season and saving all of the fun and the wins for the back end of the season.

So I'm fine with that trade

Peach Wabba (host)

off.

You got 162 games.

I don't think we need to panic just yet.

No.

Do you have

Matt, I don't know if you heard part of our conversation that we just had with Sam Venisi and Cliff Wall, but Sam is Jack Venisi's brother.

They're trying to get Jack into the NFL Hall of Fame.

He's already in the Packer Hall of Fame as an executive.

I know you're a big Packer fan.

Are you familiar with that whole situation?

And if not, you should drive up to Green Bay and sign the petition.

Matt Miller (film critic)

I do not, but I have a new reason to drive up north to check out Green Bay and to put my voice and my name down for the cause.

Peach Wabba (host)

I love it.

I hope they're successful.

Two really good guys.

And they said during the interview that Jack Vinisey was largely responsible for bringing Vince Lombardi to Green Bay.

So I would think that alone might be enough to get you into the Hall of Fame.

Kind

Matt Miller (film critic)

of an important NFL figure, I would say.

Exactly.

Peach Wabba (host)

Before we get into what you've seen movie-wise, do you go to Madison at all for the Wisconsin Film Festival, Matt?

I

Matt Miller (film critic)

don't.

It's a real hole in my game.

Unfortunately, I've just never been able to make the time to do it.

And the Milwaukee Film Festival, especially now in these recent years, has been so close to it.

Peach Wabba (host)

And

Matt Miller (film critic)

they share a lot of the same kind of movies in some cases.

But they get really great retrospectives at the Madison Film Festival.

I always look at their lineup with extreme jealousy.

So I'm looking forward to making my maiden voyage to the Madison Film Festival one of these years.

It is, like I said, it is a glaring hole.

in my movie nerd repertoire.

Peach Wabba (host)

Yeah, you need more to cover Matt, because you don't do enough already.

So let's throw something else on your plate.

And then I want to ask you tonight's question.

Is there a celebrity you would like to take to prom?

Matt Miller (film critic)

would honestly Jennifer Lawrence seems like she's a really cool hang like she seems like a fun part like there's a reason why everyone was like put her in a comedy she's a very naturally funny at ease person or at least that's her persona I think she seems that way in real life too I think she would be a really cool hang at a prom night

Peach Wabba (host)

that's a great answer

All right, so let's jump in because oftentimes when it's time to go, I like, oh, I should have asked Matt that in this.

I told you in our text exchange earlier that I just saw last breath last night.

And I really liked it.

What did you think of last breath?

Matt Miller (film critic)

Yeah, so for those who don't know, that is the new drama about a true situation.

Guy was basically left at the bottom of the ocean on a diving mission.

It stars Woody Harrelson, Simulu.

I thought that movie was pretty good.

It is very funny.

You get to the end of the movie and it's a little bit like I just watched 90 minutes of a workplace incident.

The movie just kind of wraps up and there's no kind of like greater message or greater themes.

It was just like, oh, I guess this was like a big like

I think it's well acted.

I think the story is obviously inherently very intense and very terrifying.

And it's well documented.

The filmmaker, the director was the same person who did the documentary of the same name, which got a lot of popularity on Netflix in recent years.

I think it's on Hoopla now.

So if you're a public library member, you have access to that, I believe for free.

But yeah, and so he really kind of captures that underwater eerie unease of the darkness of it all.

I think it was a really good movie.

And I think it's the, I've spent much of March frustrated.

because people like to complain that Hollywood doesn't make original movies.

They only make sequels and remakes and reboots.

And all of March has been pretty original movies.

You know, you have

Peach Wabba (host)

stuff

Matt Miller (film critic)

like Mickey 17, which is based technically on a book, but not a book that people are super familiar with.

You have Last Breath, which is, you know, not based on a comic book or anything.

You have, you know, a working man and you have, you know, the woman in the yard and all these movies.

And no one's really seeing them all that much.

You know, they're

Peach Wabba (host)

not

Matt Miller (film critic)

really making the case.

We as audience members are not really making a good case for why Hollywood should make original movies.

We have many more opportunities to come.

There's a lot more, you know, to come in April.

Sinners looks really good.

That's the new Michael B. Jordan and Michael B. Jordan movie.

But there's a lot of really interesting stuff coming out and we should support the really good original movies that come out because that's how Hollywood is convinced to make more of them.

Peach Wabba (host)

That's a great answer.

And I want to say, before we move on from last breath, it's rare, but the movie had no bad guys.

You're just watching this team try to save this guy, and it's riveting.

And I didn't even care that there wasn't really a subplot or anything.

It was fantastic.

Matt Miller (film critic)

It's almost better that it doesn't have a subplot.

I was waiting for it to bring in, you know, some sort of stuff.

It's very much a kind of a movie about competence, a movie about people trying to do a job, trying to get something done, and trying to achieve it.

And I think it's, I think it's, it's quite good.

It's, if you're one of those people who's looking for a good drama and theaters, that's a really good one to check out while you still can.

Peach Wabba (host)

Totally agree.

All right, Matt Miller is here.

We're going to do some news and we'll come back and we're going to talk about the Alto Nights and Mickey Seven.

and Matt's gonna give us a rundown of some April films and we'll talk about the controversy surrounding Snow White.

You won't want to miss that.

It's Peach Wabba in Night Light here with Matt Miller on the Civic Media Radio

Matt Miller (film critic)

Network.

Pete Schwab

Welcome back.

Hi, I'm Pete Schwab.

This is Nightlight.

Great to have you with me on this Monday night.

We've been talking a little Packers Hall of Fame.

And Matt, you'll find this interesting.

I think this guy, Jack Vinisi,

who his brother Sam is trying to get him into the NFL Hall of Fame is also the brother of Jerry Venese who helped build the 1985 Bears.

So he's like right in the middle of these two brothers.

He became a veterinarian, but I could have talked to this guy for an hour.

He talked about these stories about growing up and getting into the NFL.

And then he followed his brother up to Green Bay and instantly became a Packer fan after being a childhood Bear fan.

Fascinating stuff.

Matt Miller

Yeah, it's always it's always interesting the kind of the proximity rivalries and kind of the The the inbred nature in some cases of like, you know You've been started as a Bears fan become a Packers fan or you know the Giants fans who becomes Jets fans who become Giants fans and all the the weird kind of sports.

I know

weird relationship stuff.

Pete Schwab

It is weird to think that you are a fan your whole life of this team.

But then, oh, your son plays quarterback there, or you marry a girl from here.

And it's like, oh, that's all out the window.

Daniel on our Facebook page says Molly Ringwald, he would take to prom.

That's a good one, Daniel.

Showing your age a little bit too.

Emerson Lehman.

Layman from the WBAY Morning Show here in Green Bay says, Sydney Sweeney.

Nice to see Sydney Sweeney getting some attention.

She doesn't get nearly enough.

And then Jody Inman says, Carl Urban.

Matt Miller

Oh,

Pete Schwab

the answers are all over the board.

I love this.

This is a fun one.

Matt Miller

It's a good choice.

Carl Urban seems like a cool guy.

Yeah.

Pete Schwab

I think Matt Miller is a cool guy.

He joins us here on the

Matt Miller

stream

Pete Schwab

tonight.

We're talking movies and TV like we often do with our Milwaukee film critic friend here.

Matt, I want to ask you

about the Alto night because this is so gimmicky.

And when I first read it, I'm like, I don't know, man.

I love DeNiro.

I like Barry Levinson.

What did you, I didn't see it though.

What did you think?

Matt Miller

Nobody, nobody did.

For those who don't know, this is the Robert DeNiro and Robert DeNiro are gangsters in like the 1950s, I believe.

It's directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.

Yeah, Levinson Sonnenfeld.

Levinson.

Thank you.

Written by the guy who I think did good fellas.

So great

Pete Schwab

track record.

Yeah.

Matt Miller

Yeah, great track record, bad movie.

And I know I just went on this big diatribe of like, please see original movies.

Yeah.

But boy, this is not one you have to make time for.

I was just so it feels like baby's first gangster movie, like

Unidentified Speaker

these

Matt Miller

line readings of just like people just repeating that it sound it read it plays like there wasn't a script.

Like it

Unidentified Speaker

plays

Matt Miller

like they were like and Robert De Niro in this scene you're gonna talk about how you're annoyed at your friend And so it's like five minutes of him being like I just can't believe he would do this I mean he goes and do it does that how would he do that?

Why would he do that?

And it's that for like five minutes at a time and you're just like this scene is going nowhere I want to cry Yeah, it's it's it's a rather bad movie like just watch Goodfellas again.

Just watch any of the other mobster movies again.

I was

painfully bored watching that movie.

Wow.

Pete Schwab

Well, I'm not surprised you say that because it didn't review particularly well, even with audiences.

What about, did we talk about Mickey 17?

I don't think you've been on the show since I've seen that.

Matt Miller

Yeah, I don't think we got to talk about that one very much.

I'm a fan of it.

I'm a big fan of Bong Joon-ho.

I really love the host and Snowpiercer and obviously Parasite, which won Best Picture back in 2019.

I think this is probably lower tier.

of his.

You can tell that the script is really all over the place.

There's a lot of voiceover.

The tone is very strange, which is not unexpected for a Bong Chun Ho movie, but it takes a little bit to acclimate it to it.

And there's so many balls that's juggling in the air.

I enjoyed a lot of what it was doing though.

I liked Robert Pattinson.

I liked Robert Pattinson.

There's been a lot of dual roles this year so far.

I don't know what Warner Brothers' deal is, but maybe they're really emphasizing the Brothers thing this year with all the duels they have coming out.

But yeah, I enjoyed it.

I get why people want it.

It's a very weird blend of emotion and satire and action and goofiness.

I think if you're a fan of Oakja, if you're a fan of stuff like Brazil or Starship Troopers, you would enjoy something like this.

But if you're looking for just a good old-fashioned sci-fi comedy romp, this isn't quite that.

Pete Schwab

Yeah, it's weird.

I had just seen the host.

And I liked Parasite.

And so I gave this a chance.

My wife and I went, I first of all, I could not stand that voice.

Robert Pattinson

Unidentified Speaker

was just like,

Pete Schwab

this guy needs a beating.

Like, please stop.

Unidentified Speaker

Well, you're in the right place.

The guy who is the clone to die.

Just rebirth

Pete Schwab

himself,

Unidentified Speaker

exactly.

Pete Schwab

My guest is Matt Miller.

He's a Milwaukee film critic.

And you can follow him on his sub-stack at a man about film.

We have a call, Matt.

You might, I think this might be for you as well.

Let's put the, the calls.

Allie from the Northwoods.

Allie from the Northwoods.

Hey, Allie, how are you

Allie from the Northwoods (caller)

tonight?

Hi.

I would just like to say first off that your story with Sam and Cliff was wonderful.

Unidentified Speaker

It's

Allie from the Northwoods (caller)

always great to hear the true story behind the story.

And in that vein, I would like to say my prom date pick would be Elvis.

And the reason behind that is that

We were stationed, my dad was stationed in Germany about the same time that Elvis was there.

And of course, he let his four little girls know that there was nothing going on in this house with Elvis the pelvis.

So I would love to see my dad open the door to Elvis, picking up his daughter for the prom and love to hear what he would say to Elvis about making moves on his daughter.

Pete Schwab

Well, Matt and I will be happy to speculate about that, Ollie, and maybe we can give you an answer you'll enjoy.

That's a great call.

Thank you so much.

That's Ollie from the Northwoods.

She didn't specify, though, Matt, if it would be fat old Elvis or young pelvis Elvis.

I'm guessing

Matt Miller

the younger one.

It's stationed in Germany-era Elvis.

I think it's still Elvis the province-era.

Probably.

Yeah, not quite Vegas-era.

That's

Pete Schwab

something a dad wants to see.

All right, so we both didn't like Mickey.

Well, I didn't hate Mickey, I will say.

The end, it had a nice message and there was stuff about it I liked.

I like the ambition of it.

Matt Miller

It's a very flawed movie.

And like I said, you get a little bit of the vibe that the studio may have messed with it because there's so much.

voiceover in the movie.

Right.

And there's so much like kind of story scrambling where the movie like jumps ahead and then jumps back and then jumps forward and then jumps back again.

It's a very oddly, I get why the movie kind of flopped.

It was always going to be a weird bet, but I like it as a weird bet.

Pete Schwab

Okay, that's fair.

What now tell us about we do the popcorn pick of the week here every Thursday night, Matt.

And we had Frank Hermans, who's a big, does great stuff here in Green Bay, basically owns the Meyer Theater.

He came in and his popcorn pick of the week was Snow White.

He loved it.

And there was so much controversy around this film that didn't seem like it needed to happen.

And I don't

Matt Miller

know why it did,

Pete Schwab

but was the film good?

Tell us your thoughts on Snow White.

Matt Miller

Yeah, a lot of the controversy is dumb.

A lot of the controversy is because Rachel Ziegler,

has become public entity number one for certain people on the internet.

I don't know if it's because she's got theater kid energy.

That's not a crime.

I know some people don't like that she was vocal about the what's going on in Palestine and Israel right now.

I know Disney is trying to blame her for why the movie flopped.

That's not her fault.

And anyone who sees the movie knows that she's the best part of the movie.

Like Rachel Ziegler is so charming in the movie and is really

bringing this princess character to life.

There was also this dumb controversy where she like, when they first were talking about her being in the movie, she was like, you know, the original Snow White is a bit outdated.

Like we're going to refresh it.

And a bunch of people took umbrage at that because how dare you say that a movie from 1937 or whenever maybe doesn't hold up a century later.

And she's not wrong.

And a matter of fact, I think a lot of the updates they do for the movie work out really well.

The Prince is like an actual character this time.

Snow White has more character as well.

I don't think the movie is great.

I think Gal Gadot is pretty bad in the movie.

She seems kind of lost in terms of

how campy she wants to be, how big she wants to be, how human she seems scared on screen.

And she's the villain of the movie.

She's not supposed to be the scared

SPEAKER_03

one.

Matt Miller

And the CGI dwarves are very odd looking, but Ziggler is a star.

She crackles on stage with the Prince character.

I think that works really well.

And I don't think it's like the best directed movie ever, but Mark Webb, who did the not the most recent.

Spiderman movies and not the original Spiderman movies, but the Oreo filling Spiderman movies.

He's not a great director, but he has like a colorful pop to his movies.

And I think that works in something like this, where you're trying to bring this animated movie to kind of live action life.

You could do far worse in the subgenre of Disney live-action remakes.

You could do better.

Cinderella's great.

Pete's Dragon is great.

But this is nowhere near as awful as the headlines would make you think.

It is a perfectly serviceable, very charming kids movie.

Pete Schwab

I don't understand the controversy.

I have two opinions on this.

If you're Rachel Ziegler,

Why are you commenting on global politics right before a movie comes out?

Like, can you wait until after they see the returns?

Same thing with Gaskin from Emilia Perez.

And then also, I don't understand, like, people seem to have an issue with her race.

Like, and saying the woke stuff.

Like, I don't understand.

Like, I saw a hotel ad where there was an interracial couple and people are like, woke hotel, woke.

And I'm like, that's what people do.

They marry people from other.

races or religions.

Matt Miller

That's not, whoa, that's life.

It's deeply dumb.

And for some odd reason, this has been trailing Rachel Ziegler's entire career when she was cast in West Side Story, Spielberg's West Side Story.

You

Unidentified Speaker

know,

Matt Miller

there were people who were, you know, oh, she's, she's not Latina enough.

And then she was cast in Snow White and people were like, her name is Snow White.

How dare you not cast in the Aryan master race?

I can't look past this.

And it's just like, what are we doing here?

You know, it's just the dumbest stuff that is driving this conversation.

And for some odd reason, we let it take over the conversation on these movies.

And it ends up kind of, you know, toxifying the water and ruining what is a perfectly charming movie.

And I know it's not going to make its money back.

None of that is Rachel Ziegler's fault.

None of that's Gal Gadot's fault.

It is the fault of the fact that people don't want these live action Disney remakes anymore.

that, you know,

Unidentified Speaker

we had

Matt Miller

our fill of seeing the version of these Disney movies that we love done worse.

There's not been a single one of these that we liked more than the original movie.

And that is why people didn't show up to Snow White, which again, is a century old animated movie.

That's not a movie that people watch a lot anymore.

You know, we have new classics.

So trying to like bring that back, it was always going to perform more like Dumbo than the Lion King.

Pete Schwab

very interesting uh what you mentioned uh sinners coming up in april any other anything else we can look forward to uh in the next month hitting theaters or streaming

Matt Miller

yeah if we're looking at big blockbusters we've got one coming out this weekend called uh a minecraft movie oh yeah yeah i'm hoping that's

theaters could use a hit this year.

It's kind of been a slow start to the year, but, you know, obviously I'm kind of hoping that's a Five Nights at Freddy's kind of success.

I've heard really good things about an indie movie called The Friend.

which is a movie about with Bill Murray and Naomi Watts where Bill Murray passes away, leaves this giant dog to Naomi Watts to take care of.

And it sounds really kind of cloying and like saccharine, but all the reviews out of the festivals are like, this movie is really charming.

Don't worry about the dog.

They seem to be going out of their way to be like, this isn't going to be that kind of movie.

And there's really good reviews.

Naomi Watts is a really good actress.

I'm glad she's getting some good work

SPEAKER_03

here.

Matt Miller

I'm also excited about the horror movie Drop, but a woman who goes on a date and she starts getting drops on her phone from someone who is saying that she needs to kill her date or they will kill her son.

And it's like this whole web of like.

Yeah, it looks like a really fun crazy time.

It's from the director of happy death day, which is a very fun modern slasher movie.

Highly recommend checking that out.

And if you like that kind of tone, that kind of playful horror slasher vibe, I think you'd have fun with drop as well.

And then another one, I just want to drop one more in here.

The luckiest man in the world, I believe it's called, which is quietly, very quietly coming into movie theaters this weekend.

Do you know the story of like the 1980s match game?

or not match game press your luck where a guy went on press your luck and like knew the rhythm and the routine of where the folks went and won like an insane amount of money and the station was like you cheated and he's like no I didn't I was just smarter than you and so we've made a movie about this guy

Paul Walter Hauser, who was in the Richard Joule movie and I Tanya, really good actor.

I think David Strathairn is in it as well.

Very tiny little indie movie, but definitely I think one worth checking out if it's playing in a theater close to you.

Pete Schwab

All right, we're going to do a very short break.

Then we'll have a couple more minutes with Matt when we come back.

This is Pete Schwab at Nightlight on the Civic Media Radio

Unidentified Speaker

Network.

Matt Miller

Welcome

Peach Wamba

back to Nightlight with Peach Wamba.

I am Peach Wamba, Conrad Riding Shotgun as usual.

Tomorrow night on the show, influencer and filmmaker Craig Benzine will be here.

Craig made a documentary about Japanese packer fans called No Packers, No Life.

I had the opportunity to interview Craig on PBS Wisconsin's Director's Cut, which I host, and that is airing tonight.

He is one of the guests.

You can find out a lot more information about the Wisconsin Film Festival if you check out Director's Cut tonight on PBS Wisconsin.

And you can watch it online as well, very informative if you're interested in heading to the festival.

My guest right now is Matt Miller.

Before we let you go, Matt, I wanted to ask you about the Rust documentary.

How was that?

The Alec Baldwin accidental shooting?

Matt Miller

Yeah, last take.

I believe it's on either Hulu or Peacock.

I think it's a Hulu documentary.

I was going into this documentary pretty nervous because I've seen some pretty crummy kind of true crime documentaries that have clearly been rushed out to kind of...

caps to capitalize on big headlines and things like that.

And I thought this was actually really well done.

I think it does a good job of kind of breaking down what actually happened on the set, breaking down all of just the factual levels of, you know,

what happened and everything that happened afterwards as well, while also keeping a very human tone to the situation.

And I think it really does a good job at the end talking to the cast and crew about why they came back to finish the movie after this happened, after the tragedy that happened to Halina Hutchins, the cinematographer who was killed accidentally on that film.

I think I was waiting for it to be this super exploitative,

crummy documentary that like fed into like conspiracies and stuff like that and instead I think it's a very good tribute to her a good kind of you know factual this is what happened and a good kind of breakdown of like why people make

this art and you know why people came back to this you know cursive project doesn't make me want to see the movie Rust which they are going to release it does they finish the movie it seems like it's going to come out I don't know if I really want to see it because there's that giant cloud hanging over that movie but you watch the documentary and you're like I understand okay almost the the needed

therapy like catharsis these people needed to get this out almost out of their system.

I think it's a really well done documentary.

It's called Last Take.

And if you like that, she also did the filmmaker who did that documentary also did a little mini series on HBO called an update on our family about these family influencers who got into hot water.

Micah Stauffer was her name.

It was like a big viral story three, four years ago.

Very similar in that it takes this very kind of internet-friendly story and finds the interesting nuances and finds the kind of interesting, finds the depth in things that became, got turned into internet memes, essentially.

Peach Wamba

Interesting.

That's a... Yeah, I kind of want to see it, but I agree with you.

It probably has like that...

the crow feel where you know, when you see that scene where Brandon Lee probably died, it's just got to be just a horrible, uh, I don't know.

I'm not anxious to see it either.

I guess is what I'm saying, man.

I agree with you.

Hey, buddy.

Matt Miller

Go ahead.

Sorry.

No, I was just going to say, I'm glad for the people who needed to get it out of their system.

Peach Wamba

Um,

Matt Miller

but, you know, maybe that's almost more of like a therapy thing for them.

And I don't need to participate as

Peach Wamba

a viewer.

You know, totally get it.

I'm totally with you on that.

Hey, when you come back, Matt, hopefully I will have seen Black Bag by then and a working man, and we can talk some more movies, but let's do that soon, buddy.

Thanks for your time

Steady Eddie checking in on the text line.

Our question tonight was what celebrity would you wanna ask to prom?

And Steady Eddie says, Pete, my celebrity fantasy prom date, definitely Pamela Anderson of the Baywatch era.

If she can't go because she's busy washing her hair that night, then I'm hoping Sam Elliott says yes.

See, Steady Eddie, that's what I love about Steady Eddie.

He just wants a cool date.

He wants someone cool to hang with.

He says, speaking of Baywatch, is it true that Hollywood has called you, Peach Waba, with your curly hair and rugged good looks?

emoji that's like Groucho.

I don't get that.

But he says, the poor man's David Hasselhoff.

Yes, Steady Eddie.

I am the poor man's David Hasselhoff.

Steady Eddie says, I can see it.

Matt Miller

Just just a little bit.

Peach Wamba

I mean we're having a month.

Yeah

Craig's great.

I interviewed him on PBS.

He's a great guy and no Packers, no life about Japanese Packer fans.

These Japanese Packer fans, folks, party as hard as any Northeast Wisconsin or Wisconsin Packer fans.

It's supposed to be a great documentary and we'll talk to Craig about that tomorrow night.

Check out Director's Cut on PBS Wisconsin tonight.

If you're looking for something to watch, it's our Wisconsin Film Festival episode.

We will continue to talk about the Film Festival throughout the week and many other.

I hope to see you tomorrow night.

Thanks again to my guests.

It was a lot of fun tonight.
