And that's where we're going to start off the show today.

And because there's no playmakers today.

We're going to go to sports gambling.
Or good.
More specifically sports and gambling.
Okay.
Because I'm sure a lot of you have heard out there that a massive gambling sting just recently,
well, like yesterday, I think in the news, resulted in the arrest of Portland Trailblazers,
head coach, Chauncey Billups, and Miami Heat Guard Terry Rozier.
But they were involved in two totally different schemes.
I hadn't heard of this, but that's how out of the loop of sports I am.
And that blows, blows my mind.
I just think that's absolutely here.
I have heard a lot of people talking about sports gambling, but like that's always been
a, like that's been a thing.
Well, and we've been, I mean, I was wondering why it was suddenly so much more popular.
Now I know.
Thank you.
Well, first of all, it's because it's legal, of course, in a lot of states, not all states,
and in a lot of different states.
But the thing is, is there is like zero laws on the books about it.
Right.
Yay, gambling is, is okay now, but we have no regulation at all of what's going on.
It's the Wild West right now.
Right.
And that's not, that's not sustainable.
So that's not necessarily related to this because this is, we're illegal.
So Billups is accused of helping fix high stakes card games that cheated unsuspecting players
out of at least seven million dollars from his own players.
And the Mafia was involved too.
Oh my.
Wow.
This is an old school, everybody.
How did I miss this?
Yeah, this is a throwback.
This is very much a throwback.
So that's, that's one side of it.
Okay.
Rozier, the other side, was allegedly using private information about his fellow players to win bets on NBA games.
Now that's more traditional.
I think I heard that one.
Yeah, that's more traditional using, you know, illegal gambling on actual NBA games while you're playing, right?
Right.
Like, I think I heard that one and I was like, yeah, all right.
Like, that's almost an expected one.
Yeah, I mean, we've already seen some of that.
The other one?
Oh, that's, that's a throwback.
There's been at least one player in the last couple of years that's been kicked out band for life because of gambling while playing on team.
Sure.
Well, and that's the thing, right?
There's no laws on the books.
But they're sure our regulations from the NBA.
The rules on the NBA.
Yes.
On any of that, yes.
Corporate side, there's rules.
And so there's at least that, I guess.
Well, and that's the thing.
They can, and if they get found guilty and not in a court of law, but if they find out that they have done this, they can boot them out.
I mean, they can always ban them from the, from the league, which we've seen a little bit of that.
Sure.
You usually, well, in the past, what I've heard about it most in baseball.
Yes.
And that's the tubers most notorious league.
Pete Raw is the black socks back in 1919 and all that kind of stuff.
So yeah, that's been the big thing.
But there's been, in the NBA, there has been some gambling scandals.
Probably the biggest one before now was a referee.
Okay.
Which was found was a gambling.
Was he fixing games?
Yes.
He was helping to fix games.
So yeah, yeah.
I know I can't remember.
I thought my head I cannot remember the name of the referee that was doing it.
Crazy.
So yeah, that was the biggest one.
Almost makes me want to pay attention to sports.
This is bigger than like anything, which is crazy.
This is crazy.
So billips and rosier are facing charges of money laundering and wire fraud conspiracy.
Okay.
The NBA has placed both of them on, quote unquote, on leave.
Sure.
There are among dozens of people who have been arrested thanks to years long FBI investigation.
Dozens.
They include former assistant coach and player Damon Jones, who allegedly participated in both scams.
Holy cow.
Both scams.
That's, I mean, that's a busy, that's a busy guy.
I'm nearly speechless.
That's like not a thing that happens to me guys.
So here we go.
So what were they doing?
The poker scheme involved illegal games run by the mob, which I guess it's just the mob.
Right.
No name.
No specifics.
Right.
The mob.
And use tricks, tricks like rigged card shuffling machines and x-ray equipment, assault
extortion, robber.
X-ray equipment.
What are they using that for?
I wonder if it's like the tabletop and they could see, because you're married.
I don't know.
Back when, you know, poker, like TV poker was a thing.
You could see what they had on TV.
Now the players couldn't see it.
So I'm guessing they use the same thing.
Okay.
Oh my gosh.
While assault extortion and robbery also came into play.
Oh my god.
This is a.
Wow.
This is crazy.
It's like a wedding scam, Rosier and others not only used insight info about players, but help them win bets.
Okay.
To help them win bets.
But players also altered their performances in order to rig prop bets.
And this was just a matter of time before this was going to happen.
Oh yeah, for sure.
But also like, hey, get in this world records.
You'll listen.
Because this feels like.
We may have something here, man.
This is because.
Like that's a lot of crimes stacking up on top of each.
Right.
So this is interesting.
In one instance, the feds claim that Rosier told people ahead of time that it was going to leave a game early due to.
Injury.
So he said, he's like, okay, this is what's going to happen in this game.
At some point in the game, I'm going to be injured, quote unquote, and I'll leave the game.
And then you'll know which way to do the prop bets, either over under kind of stuff, those kind of things.
Wow.
How many points still score and stuff?
That sucks.
So like vote the under or bet the under because that means I'll be out of most of the game because I'll be quote unquote injured.
That's how they did that.
Yeah.
That's insane.
Yeah.
And this is a lot of gamblers to put.
Well, like this is crazy.
That earned them tens of thousands of dollars.
Is he in here?
I doubted you.
I was like, I mean, sure.
We can talk about a sports thing.
And I can talk about the not sports of it.
Oh my gosh.
There's a lot of not sports in there.
There is a lot of not sports to talk about in this story.
Depending on how much you, you know, gambling is a sport to you.
I guess that would be the main thing.
I'm not.
Gambling is not a sport.
Don't, don't, don't do that to me.
Don't.
It's just based on sports.
Sure.
We'll go with that.
I don't even know if I count poker.
Absolutely.
Information about other players were traded in soul.
Meaning, you know, if you know something about like LeBron James was one of them.
Now, LeBron James not involved in this at all.
No.
His name was useless.
Like, hey, I got some information on LeBron.
He's, you know, he's got a little injury or something.
Well, naturally.
People would pay attention to something linked to a name like that.
Exactly.
Yeah, yeah.
But there's no indication that these other players knew that this was going on.
That is crazy.
My favorite side story on this one.
Oh, God.
There's more.
This is just a fun little thing.
So when ESPN was reporting on this, they quietly removed the logo for its betting service,
ESPN bet, during a discussion about the scandal.
Of course, LeBron.
Oh, my gosh.
So this is something that I know James and I have talked about on playmakers and on the
morning.
Sure.
All the betting.
Yeah.
About gambling right now, the Wild West, all this kind of stuff.
Right.
And it's just, we knew it was going to happen.
Right.
It was just a matter more and more of this stuff because there's no laws on the books.
No.
I mean, I mean, there are some states are trying to get ahead of it now.
Right.
But it's a couple of years after the fact.
Well, there's that.
And then there's also, you know, wave's hands around everything else that is being dealt
with legally right now.
It's still like there's priorities, maybe, maybe sports gambling isn't at the top of
that list.
So I almost certainly, these, uh, chancey billups and Terry Rosier and the other players,
if there were any other involved, will be banned.
I'm sure they'll be banned from the NBA and on likelihood, they're probably going, they're
going to get indicted.
Sure.
And who knows?
They may go to jail for, for, uh, let's see, money laundering and, and wire fraud can
speak.
So those are both federal offenses.
Yeah.
They are.
So there's a good chance they could end up in federal prison.
Yeah.
This is all alleged stuff.
You know, they've been accused of all this stuff.
These are all alleged.
We're, we're not going to get good, uh, trouble on the head.
So, but is it worth it, though, for these players, consider the contracts that these
guys have?
No.
A million dollars.
You could have just kept your head down, played your sports ball for a little while and
lived off of the money for the rest of your life.
You dumb, dumb person.
I ought to slap you, like, give you a solid mother slap.
I mean, even, even a, like regular player, just a regular word, NBA player makes millions
of dollars.
That's what I mean.
You could have just kept your head down, played with your ball, and done your thing.
You still would end up with millions of dollars when you're done.
And the half of millions of, never had to work another day in your life.
So what?
Your knees blown out.
You're fine.
Oh, man.
Well, the only thing that bugs me about this is that there's, there's not enough
about, like, they just say, in the article here, it says that mafia is like capital, all
capital letters.
The mafia is involved.
Right.
No, no, no specifiers in there.
Yeah.
Not a one.
And the other thing is, is we keep seeing these, these sports adjacent people getting in
trouble for gambling, and they all do it illegally.
It's, it's legal.
It's so much legal gambling you can do.
Why?
Are you doing that?
Why are you doing it?
Well, the card game.
No, that's completely different.
That's completely illegal.
You can't do that.
Right.
The poker is, you know, it's tried and true.

Has Trick or Treat officially been retired by Trunk or Treat?
I think there's room for both.
If you have kids of a certain age, this might not be shocking, but Trick or Treating
may not be, quote unquote, cool anymore.
Oh.
The new hype is Trunk or Treating, which is basically Halloween tailgating.
Yeah.
I don't think that these two things are competitive.
No.
No, they're not.
All the Trunk or Treats happen on different nights than the Trick or Treating.
Like it's.
It's absolutely true.
Yeah.
I don't.
I don't get.
Anyway, anyway.
Where is this coming from?
A TikTok, of course, is going viral where a guy seems appalled at the idea that his cousin
doesn't want to go trick or treating.
And instead is excited about going Trunk or Treating at some parking lot.
Now, first of all, it's just Trick or Treating in a parking lot with cars.
Okay.
That's all that it is.
Right.
That's what Trick or Treat is.
It's still Trick or Treating, my guy.
You're still literally going from car to car and collecting candy, which is like trick
or treat.
And you're still doing the trick or treat.
You're still wearing a costume.
You're still doing it.
I.
So first of all, it seems a little weird that you come in.
These are not mutually exclusive.
No.
This is so weird.
This is the most bizarre thing.
You're making a thing out of not a thing.
It's not a thing.
Because like it says here, Trunk or Treating has actually been around since the 90s.
It has been.
I remember doing it.
Right.
When I was still a kid, it's just starting in the 90s when I was still at the very end
of Trick or Treating, like 12 or whatever it was.
But I remember these things starting to happen.
I've hosted some, like when we lived in North Dakota, we posted some at church.
We did Trunk or Treat there.
And it's fun.
Decorate, you know, you're the trunk of your car.
Isn't that fun?
I know.
I got to do it too when we lived in Maryland.
I was part of a Trunk or Treat.
If you, you know, if you don't want to do the, like the whole house decorating thing,
you don't want to have to put up all the life.
Or if you don't have time to do the whole house, or if you don't have time to do the
whole house, you have time to put a couple streamers and a fake skeleton in the back of
your car.
And you can get really clever.
I've seen some amazing trunks.
I've seen some really cool ones.
Yeah.
People have been really clever with them.
The favorites that you see at most Trunk or Treats, you see a person dressed as a witch
or something or a wizard and they have like a, a cauldron with the candy in it and they
have the whole, you know, that, that's cool.
That's so cool.
Oh my gosh.
Which, I mean, again, I don't, I don't see what the, the thing is here.
But it has become increasingly popular and widespread in recent years, post COVID.
And some people argue that it has retired trick or treating at least in their area.
I guess it would depend.
So let's talk just right here.
I guess, I mean, I guess I have generally heard people in town that like more, I know
more people who say they never get trick or treaters than people who say they get, they
get a lot of them.
Okay.
And I guess you, you could make an argument that that's because the kids have already
done their trick or treating at Trunk or Treats and so their parents just aren't sending
them out on Halloween night or whatever.
But I don't know that that's necessarily, you know, is it correlation or is it causation?
Cause that's a good question.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, and I think back to, and I don't know, maybe it has to do with, now, most communities
have a specific trick or treat time, which is not, isn't necessarily on Halloween anymore
because, you know, because of thinking about school and all these other things.
This year, it's on Friday, sure, when the kids get the day off, at least in Wisconsin
Rapids, they do this year, which means that they let plenty of time, you know, to go
they will have all day and day.
If they want to go out, that might confuse a few people, but you know, I guess I was wrong
earlier when I said Trunk or Treats are not happening on trick or treat night.
There are some.
There's going to be a few.
Yeah.
But also like, trick or treating is what?
It's like an hour.
It's two hours.
There's like a significant chunk of time.
Three or five, I think most of like three, maybe four hours in the area here.
Yeah.
And in our trick or treating in a neighborhood, stop at a Trunk or Treat, go to another neighborhood
and then stop at one more Trunk or Treat before it's done.
You can do both.
There is so many in the town.
I would do both.
Okay.
So for someone who lived in the country, I will do both.
Growing.
Watch me.
I believe you.
I believe you very much.
Someone grew up in the country where we literally had to drive from house to house.
Right.
That's how we did our trick or treating because we were so far apart, we couldn't walk.
So we got everyone, all the kids got into the car.
One, we usually had one person that year that would drive us around.
Yeah.
And then we would all go and pile out and pile in and all these kinds of things.
I look at, I think it's like glorious and just in a town.
I mean, rapids, 18, 19,000 people.
There are so many neighborhoods you can go to.
There are so many neighborhoods.
You can't, you couldn't make it to every neighborhood in town in one night in three hours
or whatever it is.
And my neighborhood normally flooded with kids.
Halloween night, not a one.
Why?
I live right by like three parks and so there's normally tons of kids just wandering the sidewalks
in my area.
But on Halloween night, they are everywhere else because I'm, I'm usually taking my kids
to the treating.
So I have an unattended bucket of candy on my porch with the light on.
Right.
No one comes.
Rarely.
Like the last two years, honestly, I don't know if anyone came.
It didn't look like more than maybe three kids had come to my bucket of candy.
And they didn't empty the whole thing into their bag.
No.
So they were actually good kids.
They were good kids.
And I still had way too much candy left over.
Like they don't understand.
This is, this is too much candy kids.
You need to take.
Help me.
Take my candy.
It's too much.
We don't want this much candy.
I don't want it.
I don't want to eat it.
That's the thing you want to eat it, but you don't want to eat it because that's the
way candy is.
And save me from myself.
It's not fun to eat the candy you bought for other people.
It's not.
It's much more fun taking it from your children.
Yes, it is.
Because that's just, that is just fun.
I mean, I don't ask.
All you parents out there don't mean, no, don't even pretend you don't.
You love finding that thing and just, yeah, yeah, I mean, you're, you're doing it.
So just, and it's fun.
Even if it's just one item, you do it, don't pretend with whatever authority we have.
We give you permission.
Yeah.
Parenting.
I'll see.
Of course, it depends on where you live with these, of course, some suburban neighborhoods
still get decked out for Halloween with the majority of the houses handing out candy.
And again, it's about neighborhoods around here.
It is.
It is.
There's certain neighborhoods that get a lot of kids and they get, they're, everyone's
ready on that street or whatever, they're, everyone's ready to hand out candy.
That kind of thing.
Honestly, I will say that I have, like, I, where I tend to have gone trick or treating
in previous years, it is pretty busy when I go there.
Yep.
Um, it's just not my neighborhood.
That's right.
A couple of years since my oldest got over trick or treating really early.
I mean, like, after 10, he was like, oh, no, I'm not doing that anymore.
Okay.
That's cool.
My youngest still is, you know, he's 11 now, but he still wants to do it.
And that's cool.
But the last couple of years, we've gone to a specific place.
He really enjoys.
So he's had a lot of fun with that one.
And I think it's because there's a lot of kids around, and you get to see the costumes
and the families.
I mean, that's, that's kind of fun too.
Well, and my kids are way more into the costumes than they are at this point.
Yeah.
At this point, yeah.
Yeah.
Well, they're building their own.
My kids are so creative.
That's pretty creative.
That's awesome.
Yeah.
I'm sorry.
Huge fan.
Sometimes it's okay to, you know, like get the store bought costume for the most part,
I think, but you should try at least once or twice to do your own costume.
It's more fun that way.
Yeah.
I'm a strong believer in buying a base costume.
That's true.
Yeah.
And then building on it.
Right.
Right.
Like finding accessories from around the house or making them, um, doing weird things
with your hair.
Exactly.
That's the makeup.
I swear to God, when I was growing up, like, like half the class, like in grade school,
was punk rockers, just so they could color their hair.
Back when coloring your hair was like, not a normal thing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Meanwhile, I've been doing that every day since 2003.
So I'm a little bit older than you.
So it was a little different back then.
I guess.
Coloring their hair as much as they do now.
I guess.
So you got to put that up there.
But yeah.
No, I've been punk rocking daily since 2003.
That's real punk too.
In some super urban and super rural areas, it's still practical to go door to door.
That's less practical to go door to door than it is a tab a festive event that's set
up at a dedicated place, like a school parking lot or a community park.
Yeah.
And growing.
And when we were living in North Dakota, we were in a very rural area.
So like the local former elementary school had a big event there.
Yeah.
And you would go and get candy and play games and that kind of stuff, which makes a lot
of sense.
It makes tons of sense.
And this can be exciting for kids because a lot of the adults bring the vibes, elaborately
decorating your vehicles, which we touched on, wearing costumes and hosting Halloween games
and contests.
That's true.
I actually went to a really cool one at a church when we were living in Maryland, where
it was like a whole fall festival plus the trunk or tree.
Very cool.
It was very cool.
They even had a DJ.
It was weird that they opened it up with Motley Crew, but like.
No judgment.
No judgment.

That's okay.
It was a surprise.

At a church function.
It was a monster match.
You see the first one you're going to see, right?
