Good morning, Wisconsin. Good morning, world. It's a new day. Thanks for kicking it off
with us at WFHR. Take it, Marvin.
Got your host, James behind the mic. I am joined by CEO of your United Way of South
Wooden Ames County's Terry John. Good morning. Got the band back together on a Friday.
It feels good. We hope you're having a good one out there. Everybody, we got one more hour
with you for the week. We're going to make it a good one. Terry and I are going to talk a little
barbecuing a little later as it is national barbecuing day and get into that. Have some fun with it.
And throughout the hour, I'm going to be reminding you that we have got brewer tickets to give
away here at Civic Media. Go ahead and text us the key word for today. Friday, F-R-I-D-A-Y, Friday.
Go ahead and text it to us. Everybody get a chance to win tickets to see your brewers. Next Wednesday,
May 21st versus Baltimore. Great young team put together there on both sides, whether we're
talking to brewers or the Baltimore. That should be a great game. Sounds fun. Get that text
that key word to us through the Civic Media app Friday. And thank you so much to everybody listening,
playing along, representing our community and our area so well. We appreciate you doing that.
Get that word out there again before we wrap up. Terry and I are diving into some entertainment
news to kick off the hour and diving right in. Terry, just a couple of interesting notes here
we'll get into, but I want to actually start off. We usually, I usually like to touch on local
things later in the segment, but we're going to start off right with the local entertainment
at Wisconsin Rapids Community Theater. I just got done wrapping up their 50th season of main stage
shows. Congratulations to them and everybody involved. Cast crew, backstage directors,
their producers, everybody that put it on a great first season. And just think about those 50
years, like all of the people who have come and gone from that organization in that time,
it's pretty remarkable. It really is cool. And they, of course, got their Hopo shows and kids
shows going on throughout the summer. Be sure to check those out, everybody. Lunch by the river
happening. They'll be there on June 19th with a performance of Snow White in the Seven Endings.
I love when they have these things apart of Lunch by the River. One of our favorite
signature events of a summer here at Wisconsin Rapids. They got a great thing coming up.
Karaoke in the studio. Raise your voice for mental health. Wisconsin Rapids Community Theater
and Nami are getting together for this. That is going on next Friday, May 30th. No,
at the end of the month, Friday, May 30th, over at Wisconsin Rapids Community Theater.
Yes, it's two weeks. So we'll be talking more about that as we get closer to it.
Some time to tune your vocal chords. Yes, yes. This summer, you've got our silver foxes with
our laugh in, which will be great. And so many other great productions and shows that are coming up.
We'll be highlighting and talking about as we get closer to them. As far as if you had your kid
audition for a show and you haven't found out yet, I encourage you to look at the audition lists or
the cast lists. Those have been released. Check that out, everybody. And they have announced
their directors for their main stage shows next year. Their holiday show, a Christmas story,
that'll be going on with productions in December. That is being going to be directed by Christine
Sullivan. It was directed many shows over there, done a great job. And the four old broads,
which will be premiering in February next year, are this, yeah, this year. Linda Garsky
directing it. Nice. One of my favorite directors, one of my first people I worked with,
one of my mentors at WRCT and Int Theater. And one of my favorite directors there is,
I love seeing Linda back directing. Father of the bride will wrap things up. That'll be directed
by John Young. John always does a great job. Productions play performances will begin in April.
May have noticed, I did not mention the first show that they're going to be with kicking out
their 51st season with on Golden Pond. That will be directed by Jamie Maylouf. Jamie, no, I'm sorry.
Jamie, so many people have called me that in my life and I don't know where it comes from.
I don't think it's because of your dad, because of James. Maybe. You know what I mean? Like they're
just assume you have a different variation. I, there are, you don't really look like a Jamie.
I do not, and I do not like that. Would you mean IE or an EY?
I don't even want to think about it. I'd rather be called Jim. I'd rather be called my Father's
name. But yes, I, I actually shuttered a little bit. I did. I think an EY.
I submitted and was, was curious. Now, honest, being honest with the audience, I, I'm an actor
and I have not directed since high school. But I know that our community theater for me is about,
well, what is my community need? We've got, it's not like when I first started at WRCT,
and we didn't have as many male actors. Now, with the way the community has grown and everything,
we got, they got plenty of guys. They don't need me for that. But what we could use is directors.
What we could use is more people behind the scenes. So not only did I throw my name in there,
and I honestly didn't think that they'd choose me, but they did. And I'm very humbled by that.
And thankful for it. I, I want to send a shout out to Linda Garzky, because she's one that called
me and told me, and I have to say that's, that's pretty full circle for me as somebody who my first
show I did with Linda and Steve, and how much I look up to her and I appreciate her. And we'll be
picking her brain on what to do as a director. But I'm, I'm excited about this. I'm very, very,
very excited for the community, for this. I think Angold and Pond is one of the, for me, one of the
early things that I fell in love with with movies, watching that movie with my non-Ampapa,
watching the incredible performances of Hepburn and Fonda and, and just being blown away by
the subject matter, because I had not seen anybody talk about that stuff in movies or TV shows. And
nowadays we've gotten a little bit better with that stuff, but that was a game change.
I was going to say, I don't think people really were talking about that at the time of,
of, of Angold and Pond. So, congratulations.
Thank you. I am very humbled by it. And I, again, I, I keep waiting for the call me up. Oh,
no, we meant Jamie Maylouf. We didn't mean you. We, there's somebody else they mean.
I don't know what I might call you then. But yeah, probably. Not the Maylouf, the Jamie
Part. I'm excited about this. And, and I want the whole community to come down in the audition.
Auditions are going to be August 4th and 5th. We're excited about it. And we'll meet you down.
So when show time shows will begin our first play date will be September 25th.
September. Okay. And we'll have some shows that'll bleed into the beginning of October.
Nice. And there'll be a great way to kick off the 51st season over at WRCT. We're so excited.

Let's get into some other entertainment news. Tom Berserot. I think, I think, if you ask me
who the best host of the last 20 years is of anything. Game shows, talk shows, whatever it is,
I think I might pick Tom Berserot. I like him. I just think he's a perfect host. I don't know
that what else he might be good at. I'm sure he has other talents and skills. But he's just one
of these guys. Nowadays we grab comedians to be host like Drew Carey. That's exactly what I was
going to say. And I have nothing against that. But producers are so afraid of making the wrong
choice like they used to. So now it's just a safer bet to bet on somebody who's already got a
little public notoriety or they're comfortable in front of audiences. They can improv. A lot of
the things that you look at at a Monty Hall or some of the people that were just, we don't have
those anymore. The people, that's what their job was. They were specifically a game show host
and they were amazing at it. We don't have those Tom Berserot's anyway. He's kind of a throwback
to me. And he's really, really good at it. I watched two minutes of dancing with the stars and I
saw when he was hosting back in the day. And I just like, well, I could see why he, why he has helped
make this show so popular. If you're great at the job, people, I bring it up and they'll note it.
But during the show, he doesn't take away from anything. He just keeps moving and adds to it.
And that is, I mean, I think that's a gift of his. He's not, he's in the spotlight,
but he doesn't behave like he has to own the spotlight. You know what I mean? I always appreciate
that. I couldn't believe when they got rid of him, honestly. And I quit watching.
You're not alone. The ratings went down after that. And to again, to our point of how good he is
at this. And it's nothing against, and I'm not picking on Drew Carey. I'm actually using him as a
great example because not many people can transition from stand-up comedy to doing that. He's done a
great job. Or follow Bob Barker. There's that piece of it too. You know what I mean? You're
following somebody legendary in that role. So how does that work? The catch is that Drew Carey
has spent his literally his whole life wanting laughter and chasing laughter. And a comedian is
going to take a little more attention away from contestants and some of that. Tom Bergeron does
the exact opposite. And that's part of what makes him so good at it. Now all that being said,
I don't know what he's going to do with his next contestants because Tom Bergeron is going to be
hosting Shark Week. So I don't know how that's going to work out for. Dancing with the stars
kicked on Bergeron to the curve in 2020 and they have never really recovered. But he sure has.
And he's fine a gig after gig. And Tom is hosting a special for Discovery Channel Shark Week called
Dancing with Sharks. I'll find expert divers and their shark partners will perform routines
devised to quote world class underwater choreography. That's kind of fun. I think that's fun. Yeah,
I am a sucker for the Shark Week stuff. I don't get to watch every single second of it. But whatever
I can catch, I usually do. Bergeron posting an Instagram video, see you in the summer. It'll
be fantastic. Like only he can pull that line off. Good on him. And one other side note, as he's
just let himself go gray, well done. Smart move. He looks very distinguished. I mean,
he's a throwback. He's a classic man. Looking at what's new on your small screen, your big screen
this weekend. Today, the greatest at home videos are going to be premiering on CBS. So they're
still doing that. That's kind of remember when that was your first came out. But in some videos,
I love that. It felt like everybody watched that show. We had, well, yeah, because that's all you
had. You know what I mean? Like you didn't really, I mean, some people had cable, but not we didn't
really, not too many people I knew had cable. And so that was the thing to watch when you still watch
TV as a as a family or together. But we have the best video of my sister on the swing set,
when the swing broke. Oh, that has. But we always said, we should say that. And that was before,
now you can just do it digitally, right? Like we would have had to have figured out somehow how to
get it from the, you know, we had like a little eight millimeter video camera. So getting it from
that to a medium that we could copy it to get it. So I needless to say it never went in, but it is
fabulous. The videos that we did see in the amount of them, people had to work for that back
in the day. Yeah. You have to make a copy like on a VHS and nail it. How many people probably
only sent in their only copy of it where nowadays it's crazy to think you could only have one copy
of something or something like that. The 16th season finale of Shark Tank is tonight on 7 o'clock
an ABC. And the series finale of SWAT is on CBS at 9 o'clock tonight. Although I don't know if
that's the last you'll see of that show. I'm hearing, I'm hearing rumblings with a little bit of
the people I know that that show may have a second life at another network. We'll see.
Tonight, premiering tonight on the streaming premiere of the brutalist starring Adrian Brody
as a Holocaust survivor who immigrates to the US. You want to ask her for this one most recently.
It's a tough watch, but it's a really good watch and an important one. And his performance is
incredible, along with a bunch of other actors in it too. Saturday night on NBC, the season finale
of NBA Saturday Live, Scarlett Johansson is hosting with Bad Bunny. 50th season finale. Wow.
It's pretty impressive. Scarlett Johansson is an amazing guest on that show. Well, she's
amazing in general, but I think she's one of the top 10 currently working actors. I think she's
one of the top 10 top 15 at the least. That I think that much of her talent. Now, as a side note,
for those that don't know, she is married to Colin Joseph, who is one of the headwriters and the
head of Weekend Update on that show. Oh, really? And they have quite a bit of fun with that.
We've seen couples in those scenarios before. I've never seen them do some of the things that they
do. They are very, they must have a really strong relationship. And they also seem to really be
madly mad about each other. They seem to be madly in love. And they've been together for a while.
The series finale of Suits LA, because that was canceled. And episode six of last of us are also
on the Air Weekend Dial. Looking at what's new on your big screen, not a lot of big releases right
now. You got to wait for July, June, end of June, July for a lot of that final destination bloodlines.
I don't know. The final destination movies. If you watch one of those, you're going to,
you've seen them all, I think. I don't know. That's, you know, last night I drove by the movie theater,
just it was on my path. And there's a sign outside. And I think it said a clown in a cornfield.
And I'm like, who in the world would go to that? Like, I don't like that kind of stuff. But I
just, it was so funny. And I'm like, I've never even heard of this. But yeah, that was the poster
out front. So I mean, a lot of a lot of releases, because that you've already had some big releases out,
a lot of these movies are looking at, okay, well, we don't want to compete with these movies.
But we are specifically, we're final destination. We're just a horror genre. So we're just
hitting this market. So we're not as worried about competing with the bigger blockbusters or
some of those. But it's, it's weird. And in Hollywood and the entertainment industry is still trying
to figure out how to handle the summer movie release, because the, and this is going back to the
Wild Wild West movie with Will Smith, where that, they expected that to just be a blockbuster.
And that was going to just be the next big move. That was the next Independence Day. And when it
wasn't, they freaked out. And ever since then, they've been so hesitant to take any chances or
to do anything. They, they have to fall into things. I think a couple of years ago with the
Barbie and Oppenheimer movies and how people were making a big deal out of going to both.
That, that was organic. That was something that no movies, you know, no marketing, because
executive came up with. And they've been trying to do it ever since. And they will continue to.
So I don't, I don't know what the big releases will be coming out later in upcoming weeks.
By now, everybody has seen that the last mission of possible movies coming out, because there's
commercials for everything. If you, if you are watching something that has commercials,
you have seen a commercial for that by now. So that's definitely coming out as well in
the next couple of weeks. And just wanted to wrap up mentioning our WFHR newsletter. A big, big
thank you to everybody who was already signed up for that one. Encourage you to sign up, everybody.
It is your one stop shot for such Wisconsin news. We're talking local stories, sports, weather,
whatever you want to think about. We are covering it right there. And a big thank you to not only
so many of the great civic media, personalities and writers we have on there,
like Terry Barr and Brittany Merlot and Jimmy Casca. But our own people, of course,
with the great sports writing that Michael Comer is doing or some of the work Laura's writing
up about for us. Certainly the work that Chuck has put in there. And this, all starting and ending
with Melissa Kay and the REP of this newsletter. And there's so much more that we're
want to do with it. And we want to hear from our audience. If there's things we're missing or
you'd like us to cover, let us know. We want to we want to do that, everybody. So there's a little
comment section. You can leave us a comment on or just give us positive feedback, too. That's
always nice. People don't do that a lot. You know, we love that. I don't mean for us. I just mean
in general society. We don't do that enough. I think I encourage that. Not even just with us,
but just in general, everybody. For every negative comment you leave, give yourself this.
You can leave negative comments if you also leave a positive comment sometime in the day or
sometime in the week. Good point. I think that's a good counterbalance and everything. Yeah,
it's good karma, too. And it's a good idea to sign up for that newsletter. Go to WFHR.com.
Sign up. Thank you very much for doing so. Terry, now I'll be back with more show coming up.
Morning shows at WFHR. Welcome back, everybody. Morning show here at WFHR. Terry, James, reminding you.
Never surrender. And Corey Hart. And Corey Hart. We're just waiting on thick. What's going on?
Now you're making me. Now you're making me nervous. I need to think about that, but now I totally get
what you're saying. I mean, I've been asking for it for a long time, but now I get a double shot.
This is more so of how much has been on our plates around here, specifically Seth, and that he
finally got a chance to actually do this. And it's more about that than it is anything else.
You know, it's funny, though, sitting here this morning, I never even noticed either of those up on
the screen. You know, before you played it before, like I was like, whoa, he does that to me every
week. And it's my job to be paying attention to that stuff. And he does that to me all the time.
Shout out Seth, nice work on the bumpers. And appreciate all of you hanging out with us. And happy
national barbecue day, everybody. It's supposed to be the unofficial start of grilling season,
which means nothing to my father, because there is no off time for grilling season. We grill you
around, especially here in the Midwest, but I get it what they mean by that. It's only been a thing
for about a decade. So no one's sure who came up with it, but probably someone trying to sell
grills more than likely. But you know, that's all right. I mean, we've made it our thing, I think,
for a lot of a lot of families. May is also National Barbecue Month, which the Barbecue
Industry Association came up with back in 1981. Anyway, Yelp just celebrated National Barbecue
Day by raking the top 10 barbecue cities in the US. They based it on the reviews of the top
barbecue restaurants and the top two are both in Texas. I'm sure. But you know what is to me?
Like this is a Midwest thing, right? Like everyone else calls grilling barbecue. Yeah, we call it
grilling. We call it grill. I mean, I don't say, hey, should we barbecue tonight? Because then
that means I'm making like sloppy just like barbecue food like like sloppy Joe's or something.
But I always think that that's funny. I love that. I love that. I think it's also because of
brats. I don't know, because you're not going to barbecue a brat. So you would say you're grilling
when you're making a brat. And I think that the popularity of sausages and everything in this
state in particular, but in the Midwest, because in Illinois, it's the same thing. We say grilling.
We're not saying barbecue. You don't do that. Yeah, I think it's Midwest, but I think, but like
Texans, anything that touches a grill, they call barbecue. Yeah, even if there's not barbecue sauce
on it, they just call it barbecue. And that was one of those things. I did not get it. It took me
a little getting used to what I was down there. Yeah. And I one thing that I think is interesting
about this too, where the way they're doing this, I don't believe if I'm understanding it right,
I don't believe that they're saying this is the best barbecue. These are the people that grill the
most. These are people that barbecue the most as soon as they do. All right. Because I do not want
to get into that debate of who has the best barbecue. My whole life I've been hearing about this.
And nobody has the perfect answer. No, not like the perfect on. I'm not getting in that fight.
Now teach their own, whatever you like. Austin, San Antonio, take the top two spots, followed by
Kansas City, Missouri, Memphis, Tennessee. So not no surprising there. Just the order of them,
I guess is a little surprising, but I wouldn't be none of that is shocking anybody out there.
At five and six Charleston, South Carolina and Greenville, South Carolina, y'all can figure that
out between yourselves as it should be higher than the other. I was joking about this with our
National Day of Calendar on Sunrise show earlier. It's interesting. This part of this is the
kind topic is interesting to me when it comes to who has the best barbecue because the country
seems to have their debates. Kansas City, Texas, a lot of that. But if you spend time in the
Carolinas, they do not, it is not a debate. They have the best barbecue. It's more about who has
the best barbecue the Smiths or the Joneses. It's more of on a local level like a community level
and everything. They go crazy about their barbecue. Growing up, I always thought it was Kansas City
that went really crazy with their barbecue. No, Carolinas. Honolulu is at number seven on the list.
Wouldn't have expected that. A lot of Lulu, a lot of Louis. Of course, yeah, I wouldn't have
just wouldn't have thought of that. At number eight, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Durham, North Carolina
comes in at number nine. I guarantee you, they were upset about that. They feel like they should
be higher. Not only that, but the two South Carolina cities finished higher than in North Carolina
city. Well, they're different. They're south. They can grow longer. I don't know. We grow.
I know. I know what you said. At number 10, Nashville. Yeah. Yeah. One of the things that I've heard
about, because New Orleans is probably number one of the list as far as cities or states or areas
that I haven't been to, that I would like to go to number one on my list. But right next to it
is a tie between Nashville and Memphis and just wanting to experience both of those cities.
But as much as I'm a big music guy, and part of the reason I want to go there is that I love the
blues and some of those things. Man, the food. I don't know. I'd have to combine the two because
you know, I'm only going to be able to spend so much time there. And I want to try all the food in
those places. I let alone. There's a lot to try. Can't imagine. Just from what I've heard about,
that's one thing. But I don't know about you. I'm one of those people. I love to travel and I've
done a lot of it in my life. And I refuse to. If I'm spending time in Galveston, Texas, I'm going
to a water burger. I'm not going to a McDonald's or I'm going to a mom and pop place or something
like that. Going somewhere that you don't have access to. I like the locals and everything. I
love that because first off, I feel like it's almost teach their own on their trip. But for me,
it'd be a wasted trip if I go there. And I'm not experiencing one of the reasons I traveled.
I can't get that food here, you know, where my hometowns. I want to try that. That's a big
part of it too to me. It's not just what you hear from on TV or movies, what Nashville and Memphis
may have. I want to know what the locals are eating. I want to go to those places and check that out.
I want to go somewhere where they're handing me my food on a paper plate. That's the kind of
place I want to go to. And I can't imagine what they've got in Memphis and Nashville with those
kind of places. Memorial day is the unofficial start of summer, but also a popular first day to
fire up the grill. So waiting for another week, I wouldn't wait. Not that any of us around here
have it all anyway. Find out the full review at yelp.com if you'd like everybody. And speaking of
yelp, again, I fell into that, but I'm going to bring this one up more often. Go ahead and leave
your negative complaints in your comments, but I encourage you to also leave a good positive comment.
I challenge you to do that. Those of you out there that do leave comments on things. And that's,
you know, here or there. It's up to yourself, but I think you're going to notice a good feeling
from that. Coming back after our news, sports and partner break, Terry, now you're going to
get into some more barbecue. A barbecue day poll. I got a bunch of different questions for you that
they surveyed people out as far as barbecuing. That should be good. Coming up on mornings here,
WFHR. Welcome back, everybody. 80s vibe today usually happens when Terry and I get together.
Hope you're having a great Friday out there. Happy Friday, everybody. Terry and James here,
what do you think so much for joining us and keeping the barbecue theme going here? It's officially
grilling season. So what are you cooking? A recent poll found our favorite food to grill is burgers
with over 70% of the vote and informal Buzzfeed poll backed that up. Over 15,000 people voted on
popular barbecue food and matchups. For each matchup, you can only pick one. So there was a lot of
that going on. Now, before we get into these matchups, we're going to talk about here. I want you,
Terry, the audience, chime in. Let me know what you're thinking. What is your favorite thing to
barbecue? What is your maybe your go-to thing to barbecue? Now, you can answer that as your favorite
thing to literally grill. Like, my dad loves making any type of sausage or Italian or
brats or those kind of things. Burgers are more my thing. I like grilling burgers more. So usually
he's my father has a Cal Ripken streak of making great burgers. So I'm not saying he can't do it well.
But I tend to be the one that Jimmy took over. I'm right over there and doing the burgers.
For me, my family, that's kind of how we do. We like to do it and everything. I'm curious if
anybody out there has a go-to or a favorite or just you're not even opening the grill unless
you're putting this on it. I mean, my preferred is a steak. So we grill a lot. So anything hot
dogs. If I have a hot dog though, I want it really well cooked. Like, it can be blackened,
brats, hamburgers, pork chops. I don't know. I feel like we use the grill as much as we use
the stove top. My first apartment, my father, my mom, you know, making my mom, my Nana, making sure
I had milk and cereal on some of these things. My father shows up. He's got a hammer, a multi-purpose
screwdriver and a little mini grill. Like, that's exactly what he brought. These are the basics.
This is what my son needs to start out on his own. That's how serious we take grill it. I hear you.
I hear you. So we're looking at these match-ups. Burgers or dogs. Burgers got 78% of the boat. Hot dogs
got 22%. I like grilling a hot dog, but I'm a Vienna hot dog guy. I don't like pork hot dogs.
I like hot dogs. Just a period. Just a hot dog, yeah. And it's funny because a lot of people are like,
oh, you like hot dogs? And I just, I just do. Yeah, I don't know. Is there something do you think
nostalgic about it to us? Oh, first of all. Because I, especially our generation. Because they do
taste the best with macaroni and cheese. I mean, not mixed together, but I'm going to say like,
which mean, though, yeah, that's a great combo. Chicken or pulled pork, 47% said chicken, 46% said
pork. So pretty close. That pretty close race between those two. Look, pork on the grill. Yeah,
I guess. Oh, I mean, it may be in a, in a, you know, barbecue or maybe they're just
barbecue in the roast and then pulling apart. Yeah. Okay. Well, I would prefer, I mean,
if I'm eating one of those, I'm eating pulled pork over chicken. Yeah. Sausage or ribs.
Ribs won with 56% of the vote, although I don't know if they did this in Wisconsin, how that would
go. Ribs are great, but there's almost no contest. If you're going to put ribs up against a
sausage here in Wisconsin, I don't know if that has much of a chance. I don't know.
Ribs are so much work. Yeah, they are. Not to cook to eat. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I boy, man, I love ribs, though. The only reason I've actually thought about trying lobster
or some of the seafoods in my life, because I have not, I've never had lobster, is,
because part of the reason is all the work that it goes into to have one little piece of lobster,
but I get it when I compare it to ribs. Like, there's not a ton of meat on the bone of ribs,
but man, is that me worth it? Okay, but you know, who has the best ribs? West Grand IGA.
Yes, they do have really good. Potato salad or coleslaw, 56% chose potato salad.
Again, this is one of those ones. I like both, but I would prefer potato salad.
Yeah, I think here in the Midwest. How is made? Yes, that's a big, oh, you're right.
You're right. Everybody has that one person in their family that they're waiting for them to show
up to the potluck or to the, you know, family dinner with that potato salad. Yes,
for sure. And they have to make it every year. They may want to make something else, but nope,
yeah. Hey, Helen, are you bringing the potato salad to Syria? Nobody else even thinks about
bringing potato salad. You can always see the new member in the family, too, because they brought
a potato salad. Like, oh, you shouldn't have done that. You should be like, overstepped.
Yeah. Macaroni salad or mac and cheese. Mac and cheese, of course, one with 77% of the
voter wasn't even close. I've never had macaroni salad. I'm not sure, but mac and cheese is great
anything. Mac and cheese is one of the few versatile foods to me that can, you know, whether it's
summer, winter, doesn't matter. And when we were kids, I mean, yes, it was there, but it was just kind
of a staple. And then all of a sudden, probably what, like, 10 years ago, it just exploded. Like,
mac it, well, look, we've got like restaurants that are just mac and cheese. So I wonder how much
that, because from what I understand, that's always been the case in the south. It's always been,
like, there are people that they'll have for mac and cheese for dinner. Like, but it's not
the mac and cheese I grew up with. It's not. It's like baked. Yeah. Yeah. It's a cheese. So it
almost reminds me more of lasagna than it does mac and cheese. And watermelon or pineapple, 69% said
it's watermelon, not to me. I don't know. I like watermelon, but I'm a pineapple. I love pineapple.
And they're each is equally as annoying to clean. Yeah. In my opinion. So I, you know, especially
if you're going to dice it up and put it in a bowl, I mean, if watermelon, if you're just going to
slice it and eat it off the rind, that's, that's way easier. But, you know, I'm kind of like,
what's the difference from cleaning one out clean the other? There's something nostalgic and
and something like one, you know, grade and so summer about having a slice of watermelon or
something like that. Like on the rind. Yeah. Yeah. That is weird. That is weird to me. I mean,
I'm fine with them and not being in there, but the nostalgia part. As I've gotten older and,
and I, you know, I stopped smoking some years back and everything. So my taste buds came back and
I feel like I'm tasting some things for the first time. Every time I have watermelon now,
it kind of just tastes like water to me. Like I don't really get, like I get the flavor of
watermelon, but like you were saying with the amount of work and all that, and I'm kind of like,
I don't know. It's, I don't know if it's worth it to me. Watermelon's okay. It's just not one of
my favorite flavors. So I don't get as much, I don't feel like I get as much out of it as I did when
I was a kid. Whereas pineapple, I've loved it my whole life and will always love it. Like the
artificial flavors, the real flavors, a real pineapple, pineapple flavor, this. I just, I like pine.
Do you remember as a kid? Well, maybe even as an adult, but having a canned pineapple, like the,
but not, not the little chunks, but like the slices. Yes. Yes. Put my finger in. Oh, yeah.
My mom would always make fun of me because I would drink all the pineapple juice. Yeah,
it was fabulous. I loved it. Or we'd have to count how many slight, you know, because there were
four of us kids. So it was like, if there were, you know, if there were nine slices, everybody got
two and then the other one had to be quarter. Had to quarter it. Yep. Yeah. Well, that's hilarious.
Baked beans or cornbread. Cornbread, one with 58% of the vote. I love cornbread, but I,
there is cornbread and then there's southern cornbread. No, that's different. Oh, that's some good
stuff. I don't even, yeah, I mean, for me, it's both. There's not one or the other there.
I, I've said many times on the air, I am not a beans guy. There's jelly bean. That's about the
only kind of bean I like. I just not a bean. But also not green beans. Nope. No beans. No beans.
No, no, no, no, no, no matter what color or shape. Like the texture. Just don't like the way
they taste though. I like all beans, I think. I have never met a person who doesn't like beans,
except me. I'm the only person I've ever known that doesn't like. I admit, I am on an island
on that one. Grilled veggies or corn on the cob wraps things up for us in this one. It's not
even close. Corn on the cob, 70%. I do say that. I'm a grilled, I would pick grilled veggies. Yeah.
Oh, yeah. They're not bad. I may be a surprise in people out there. But I actually, that's the way I
prefer vegetables is grilled. But corn on the cob, oh, it's a mainstay to me. Oh, everyone at my
house loves it. I don't like stuff stuck in my teeth. Yeah. I just don't like if I, if I make
corn on the cob, I literally make myself a different vegetable. Or I will cut it off. And they're
really, you know, they're all like really, you can just go in the bathroom and floss me. I just
don't like it. I just, I mean, I like corn. I just don't, I don't know. Well, I, it's everything
that I was saying about beans for me. I'm with you. There's something about the texture that I just
don't like. It's not even the flavor because I couldn't even tell you what a bean taste like green
bean, you know, baked bean, whatever it is. It's just that as soon as the texture gets in my mouth,
I'm like, ah, don't like it. No. Um, what about refried beans? No, no. I, uh, I, you know,
I, here's the other twist of this. I love chili. I love chili. So you pick around the beans.
I either pick around the beans or I get it without. When I was a kid, I, I didn't really, I mean,
I liked green beans, but I didn't like other, other beans, you know, um, brown beans or, um,
big beans or anything like that. But yeah, in chili, I would always pick out the kidney beans
when I was, when I was a kid. And now I love them and my kids like them. I don't know.
Well, if you needed an excuse, which I got a guest at 99% of our audience does not,
if you needed a reason to grill or barbecue this weekend, we have given it to you. Happy
barbecuing everybody. Uh, enjoy some great food and, uh, get some local food while you're at it.
Always be looking for that made it Wisconsin label. I encourage you to do that everybody.
We'll, uh, take our final time out of the week here on the morning show. We'll come back, wrap
up the show, get into some of our schedule and some local things going on in our area and
get an update from our United Way. All coming up here on Mornings at WFHR.
Oh, you hear that music? You know, it's a Friday here at the Morning Show on WFHR.
Terry and James hanging out with you.
Hope you're having a great Friday out there. Thanks so much for joining us,
everybody. Gonna get into our schedule and some other fun things in a moment here. Uh,
but don't want to remind everybody every Friday's all summer long. Our talk stations here at
Civic Media are going to be giving you a chance to win some brewer tickets. Be listening every Friday
for a keyword to text to us through the Civic Media app. For today, it's Friday. Friday.
Text to us, everybody. F-R-I-D-A-Y Friday. Go ahead and text it to us. Uh, get in on the
winning and we, uh, I'm rooting for every one of you. I'll, I'll like,
heartedly admit I'm rooting for rappers, uh, people, uh, to win this. But anybody in our
listenership we're rooting for, you go in tickets to see the brewers playing Baltimore Wednesday,
May 21st, uh, and be listening every Friday for another opportunity to win with us here at
WFHR and of course all of our Civic Media talk stations. Friday texted to us, everybody.
And, uh, thank you to the Milwaukee brewers. I appreciate that brewers. Um, hopefully with
a relic getting that home or and everything that turned things around here. So we're hoping
offensively, uh, and we've got some health coming to them defensively, uh, and, and pitching wise.
We're going to talk more about this on playmakers tonight. Be sure to join us from four to five.
I'm 105 five W-I-R, right? Uh, we are looking for your sports takes and feelings.
Quick PSA for everybody out there. Those sports takes those feelings, they can, they can go bad.
You do not want to keep those inside. You do not want to keep those locked up, everybody.
We talk a lot about mental health now these days. Well, part of mental health is getting stuff
off your chest. Call up and join the conversation we want to hear from you. Uh, we will be joined, uh,
by, uh, you know, whether it's Randy, Michael, or Seth, we focus on local area high school sports,
our river kings, our rafters, and of course we build from there and kind of talk about, you know,
big events going on in the world of sports along with plenty of other things.
And, uh, today we are going to be joined by assistant GM Jake Adams from the Wisconsin
Rapids rafters. Uh, Jake's going to join us and coach Ziggy is going to join us. Uh, for the
first time we're going to be having on our airwaves, our, our coach of the manager for your 2025
Wisconsin Rapids rafters. Cool. Coach Zig's going to join us, came not wait to get to know him a
little more and talk to him and ain't going to be the last time he joins us. Uh, he'll be with us
throughout the summer. Um, as we work with our, our rafters for a 16th season. That is, isn't it
just crazy that they've been here this long? Crazy. It's crazy to think it feels like it was
literally just like what a couple of years ago. And of course every hit, every pitch,
every win a rafter baseball right here where it belongs. The WFHR all summer long, everybody.
We of course encourage you to get your tickets to go to the ballpark. But if you can't make it,
we got you covered right here at WFHR. Now we're very proud of that. And, um, yesterday we did
some promo stuff with the rafters where we're doing a little video and some photos and stuff.
That stuff I encourage you to be on the lookout for. And while they were here, they may have dropped
off tickets to give away. They may have. Uh, you're going to keep listening to find out they did.
They did. They did baseball. This is fun. Yeah. Yeah. We're excited. We're making it. We're,
we're, uh, baseball needs to give us some money in the, like, because we were helping baseball
stock around here. All baseball. We love it. We love baseball. Uh, also love being able to bring
you great local programming. Um, while it has shifted, it's may not be a near analog radio.
We cannot encourage you enough to keep checking out the rapids report. It is what we have done
with midday magazine. It is streaming every Monday through Friday at two o'clock. You can
listen, download, uh, just as you always have with the show. And, um, we appreciate everybody who
has been doing that. Our numbers streaming wise are great. And, and we appreciate you doing that.
But we also know that there's a lot of people out there that like to listen and still used to
listen to things analog wise. And we encourage you to join us over there. But also to let us know
about that. Let us know those individuals out there that are missing the show on the air. I want
to hear from you. You can reach me out, reach me directly if you'd like. Um, and we'll work together
on these things because this is your station as much as it is ours. I understand that things
may feel differently sometimes. Uh, as long as I'm in this chair, and as long as Chuck is in the
chair, he's in, it'll be the case. And we're getting close, we're getting closer and closer to
celebrating our, uh, another birthday around here. Another big milestone here at WF HR. And don't
think for a second out there, everybody, that we don't realize the reason we're able to celebrate
that is you, you out there. You made this station. And we're not, we are not going to forget that.
And we're going to continue to do great reporting like we will be on the rapid support. Be sure to
join us today for that. Senator Patrick testing going to be in with us. I've got a bunch of,
a bunch of hardball questions for Senator testing. Um, I'm going to, boy, I'm going to grit. No,
I mean, I don't shy away from that stuff. But we also don't treat the conversation that way. We'll
be catching up with him about. And man is, uh, him and crew have been busy. Oh, yeah, busy.
We're going to dive, we're going to dive into a bunch of that with you today. And in part two,
we're going to talk to Andrea. She is a part of out loud marathon county. Learn more about what
they are doing and that great organization today, uh, and again, that'll be streaming for you available
at two. Uh, real quickly, just a couple of notes I wanted to get to before we get an update from
the United Way. I want to remind everybody that we got rafter pocket schedules here at the studios.
Stop by, say, herring to Pam and pick up a rafters pocket schedule. And volunteers are
needed to help place flags in our local cemeteries tomorrow. Please meet at the Forest Hill,
Mausoleum right here in Rapids, 10 am sharp. See if you can help out with that one. We greatly
appreciate all of you doing that. Thanks to everybody helps out with that every year.
And I wanted to touch on a couple of other fun things like, uh, going on tonight, uh, over in
Nekusa. They have their, uh, at 6.30, Alexander middle schools and Nekusa high school choir pop concert.
Oh, fun. Check that out, everybody. Head on over to the beautiful Nekusa high school auditorium at
6.30 tonight to check out their Alexandria middle school and Nekusa high school choir pop concert.
And then next, uh, Monday, Lincoln high school has a band concert going on at 6.30 at the pack.
And next Tuesday, they, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, Rams will be having a sixth grade band concert. We'll
tell you more about those as we get closer to them next week. Uh, what kind of master gardeners have
their spring plant sale happening in the port, uh, Edwards Village rummage sale that'll be going
on tomorrow from 8 am to four and 9.30 Westport Drive and beautiful port Edwards. Uh, I got a lot of
great things available for you with that. Uh, you can also talk to, uh, Garden Walk, uh, get, get
their tickets for the Garden Walk. You can ask a master gardener stop by. They're both to discuss
your gardening questions. Maybe you heard our Rapids report you yesterday with UW Extension's
Janelle Weir. Uh, Janelle talked about this a little bit. She is one of the smarter, better
brains when it comes to this and she'll be down there. It's going to be a great event. It's a great
resource. Yeah. Yeah, it really is. Uh, enjoy the Wood County master gardener spring plant sale
going on tomorrow from 8 am till 4 pm at 9.30 Westport Drive in Port Edwards. Look for their, uh,
science and stuff and everything. Be sure to check that out. Uh, and want to remind everybody
about a blood drive happening next Monday, this coming Monday, uh, right here in Rapids,
at 311 Lincoln Street and Wisconsin Rapids over at the former East junior high school music room.
Go check that out. Uh, and donate if you can from 2 to 7. Uh, we appreciate all of you heroes out
there donating, uh, greatly appreciate you doing that. And speaking of, uh, uh, you know, heroes out
there and donating items. Terry and I are going to talk a little more about that in a moment. But
do want to thank everybody who has already dropped off stuff for the little Charlottes animal rescue.
This pet drive we're doing, uh, over on 105, but really WFHR is a part of it too. Um, we're taking
blankets, towels, dog cat food, dog and cat food, treats and toys, kennels and crates, garden hoses,
cleaning supplies, all the fixings. Please help us give these animals a better future. Uh, we've
got, uh, you can drop things off our friends from the ground up coffee shop here in Rapids or, uh,
of course, equality foods, both locations, people state bankets, Stevens Point, family,
natural foods, uh, right here in Rapids, uh, you know, of course, a lion health, uh, chiropractic
and plover, mission coffee house and plover. Um, junkyard bar and grill, by while meow here in
Rapids and of course, the WFHR WRI studios can drop off any of these items at any of these locations
and we'll get them to our furry friends. Thanks so much to everybody who's already helped with that.
Quick reminder again that the Wood County Parks and Forestry Department have opened up some more
trails. Uh, they have announced that these trails got four miles of new ATV, UTV trails right here
on, on Wood County Forest, connecting Peterson Road to Hey Creek Road. These opened up yesterday.
Please use caution while riding on the trails. Riders are reminded to stay on designated trails,
obey all the signs, have fun, but enjoy yourself and, uh, be safe out there. Find out more at WoodCountyWi.gov,
WoodCountyWi.gov. I mentioned, uh, drives and dropping off items, Terry. Um, we've got a couple
of those things going on with our United Way. Yeah, we absolutely do. So we are right now in our
diaper drive, which runs Mother's Day to Father's Day. We are looking for new, unopened packs of
diapers. If you are curious, our greatest need is the larger sizes, so size four, five, and six.
But of course, we will take any, um, diapers, wipes, and creams or pace. Those can be dropped off
at United Way at 351 Oak Street, here in Wisconsin Rapids. If you are donating on the south side of
our, of our service area and in Adams County, those can be dropped at the Adams County Extension
Office. We are also collecting school supplies for stuff the bus. Um, from now until, um, August 7th,
at lunch by the river, we will encourage members of the community, do encourage members of the
community to pick up school supplies. We are looking for solid color folders, solid color notebooks,
markers, colored pencils, scissors, glue sticks. Those are kind of our most needed.
We also take monetary donations because with that, we purchase the backpack that, um, holds all
of these items. So, um, that's an important piece. Last year, we were able to serve 949 students in
Southwood County, um, who maybe otherwise, you know, wouldn't have had all of the, all of the items
that they need to, to get off to a good start. So we do encourage, um, donations, school supplies.
I mean, much to people, sugar in, but school supplies are out. So, um, you know, you can pick those
up and you can bring them by any time we do. Um, and this will continue to build, but we do
on our website, have a list of drop-off locations, you know, maybe our hours aren't convenient at,
at the United Way, or you certainly can hang on to your items until lunch by the river on,
on August 7th. Um, but then that distribution takes place. Um, just two short weeks after and we,
we get those in the hands of families who, who need them most. If you are in need of school supplies,
you visit our website, UWAC.org. That registration is currently open. Um, you can register your
children to receive supplies. And the reason, you know, important reason to do it early is that
these, the distribution slots are first come first served. So, um, we're distributing on a Friday
afternoon and a Saturday morning. So if there's a specific, you know, you know, you could only do
Saturday, then, then you should hop on and get registered so that, um, you, you get the spot that
is most convenient, um, to you, because we can't just only serve so many families per hour,
right? You know, it's just, uh, just try to balance it so that no one's in line for, uh,
for an obnoxious amount of time. Um, I mean, you know, a huge shout out to all of our volunteers
and partners around stuff the bus and stuff the desk because it's, it's a lot, there's a lot of work
that goes into it. Um, and then, you know, since we're talking baseball, let's wrap on baseball.
So we have a United Weeknd. This is our annual food sculpture contest taking place at a
Raptor game on June 17th. Um, teams are encouraged to build a some kind of sculpture out of
non-perishable food items and the idea is to build awareness around hunger. So if you attend the
game that night, um, you know, you can see the sculptures, you can even vote on the sculptures.
But if you, you know, want to just check it out during the day, you certainly can do that.
Any Raptor game that you go to between start of season and June 17th,
if you bring non-perishable food items, you will get a free bleachers seat. So I mean, that's,
that's super cool. Um, but the idea, again, build awareness around hunger in our community and then
the, the huge side benefit is all of the food used in the sculptures gets donated to local food
programs. And so, when, when you're going to get some great baseball, see a Raptor's win,
and also be able to see some really fun creativity from your local, you know,
community members and everything. While all the whole time knowing that all that food's going
to go to somewhere, helping somebody out, helping some family out, helping some people out,
it's, it's such a good feeling every year. It's one of my favorite days of the year.
Cannot wait for United Weekend, that's coming up. Find out more about that and all the other
great things going on with the United Way, UWSWAC.org, UWSWAC.org. Be sure to follow them on social media
as well and share their posts on your page. You just never know who might see it otherwise.
And keep in mind, two in one is a great resource with any questions you might have in the community,
especially recommend two in one to people new in the community and everything. Oh, it's a really,
really good, a handy resource. And thank you again, Terry, for that update. One last good story of
the week. We've seen plenty of stories about ducklings and kittens being rescued from storm drains,
but there's no one. Firefighters in Austin rescued a baby deer from a sewer the other day.
They returned the male fawn to a nearby spot in the woods where they'd seen his mom hanging out,
but the photos of this are... How big are their sewer drains? That's exactly right. How did they even
get in there? I don't know if I've ever wanted the animals to be able to talk more. I want to
interview this deer and of course these great officers and we appreciate them. Appreciate you,
Terry. Have a great weekend. Have a good weekend. Be good to each other out there.
