There Is FAR Too Much Mountain at this Mountain Cabin! (Hour 1)

Good morning, Wisconsin. Morning, world. It's a new day. Thanks for kicking it off with us at WFHR.

Got your host, James behind the mic. I am joined by CEO of your United Way of South

and Ames County's Terry Johns. Good morning. We got the band together. We do. We're here to have

some fun. We got plenty of things lined up for you throughout this Thursday. Let's kick it off

the way we like to with our friend, Brittany Merlot. Brittany, every day is an adventure weather-wise

at Wisconsin. It really is. And it's a world of different today. If you don't like the weather one day,

just wait 24 hours and it'll change. Patience is a virtue, right? Do you ever talk to other

meteorologists in like boring states where they have the weather's 50 again? I mean, it's got to be

a little exciting in some levels. You know, I actually worked with someone up in Deluth,

Minnesota, so he went from crazy weather, lake effects, snow, snowstorm, peak, everything.

And then he moved to California and I was like, are you bored? Yeah, that's kind of odd.

He was very bored. We got so much. No, it didn't have to work too hard, I guess.

Yeah, there you go. You just keep repeating the weather. You know, the sunshine today isn't

beautiful, though. It was a nice driving. Not a vocabulary to use, you know? Yeah. Yeah, it is

really nice out though right now. A great way to start the day. It really is. It's a little

crisp, a little cool. We're still seeing winds knock us down to windshield, feeling like a single

digits early here this morning. But we are going to climb this afternoon to highs in the upper 30s.

It will be sunny all day long, not a cloud in the sky. Winds of well ease this afternoon too.

And then by tomorrow, we continue to see the sunshine highs right back to the mid to upper 30s.

And by Saturday, we're going to be hitting 40 degrees and Sunday. How about some 50s?

Oh, it should be the Monday, potentially 60. That is crazy.

Wow, just from what we just were experiencing not even 24 hours ago to 60s, some coming up

in less than a week, that's crazy. Yeah, the spring is a roller coaster. You know, I'm trying to

figure out we have a big event on Tuesday and I'm trying to figure out my wardrobe. This is going to

be like 60. I'm having something different to wear. Every Wisconsin night has to give every

other Wisconsin night grace when it comes to wardrobe. Nobody knows how to dress. Nobody,

nobody. We need to be able to bring like in the backs of our vehicles, like have a half of

wardrobe so that if it's 50, we can wear this. But if it's 42, we can wear this. And yeah,

there's no, there's no rival race revealed way secret. That's exactly what I do. I have a little

bit of everything in my car just in case for the weather girl is dressed right. Yeah, because

wouldn't it be weird for you if it was 60 and you had them like a turtleneck? Oh, yeah, that's yeah,

looking a little straight. It's gotta be. Especially for the weather girl. We appreciate your

the bridge over there. It's a Francisco. There's a new version of monopoly. We're going to talk

a little bit about and speaking of board games, how many people cheat at them? We'll get into that one.

I think a lot. Yeah. Don't you? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Entertainment news coming up in the 9 o'clock

hour. But before that, we will have our pet of the week from the South O'Konnie main society.

Looking forward to that one. It's going to be fun. And 10 foods you should never store in the freezer.

Oh, I got a good one right there for you. All right. Also getting some good stories of

we also have our schedule to touch on and plenty more coming up. But Terry, you guys got plenty of

going on over at the United Way. It's always busy over there. And this time of year, especially.

Yeah, we've got some great things happening. Our annual power of the purse is sponsored by

Women United. And this is happening next Tuesday. So we are all hands on deck all about power of the

purse. Yeah. I'm getting everything ready. But this fundraiser is to support early grade learning

and literacy here in our community are actually all the communities that we serve. So South

Wood and Adams counties on the main program that we helped to fund through Women United is

Dally Parton's Imagination Library. This is a huge huge program and opportunity. And you know,

something interesting that I that happened this week. One of our Women United members posted on

her personal social media, you know, hey, come to this event. It's a great time. Even if you don't

do purses, it's you know, it's just it's really fun. And our, you know, the main thing that it

benefits is Imagination Library. And someone she knows comments on her post and says, you know,

Imagination Library is really expensive and and you know, it's really hard to get in communities.

And you know, it's it people can't afford it. And she was but she was so pleasantly surprised

when the person responded that we have Imagination Library, right? Like we're not trying to get it.

We're doing it, right? Like we're making it happen. So I just thought it was, you know, it was kind

of cool because the the person was encouraged about it. But she was like, you know, it's it's

expensive. It'll be hard to do. And you know, and that kind of thing. So so that's great. We

already have it going, right? Like we are serving all children, Southwood County and Adams County.

So power of the purse is next Tuesday. Bullseye Golf Club starts at 5 pm. Tickets are $40

in advance, 45 at the door. We encourage all ladies to come on out. Grab your friends. Fabulous

venue. They're probably gonna have to have the AC on what it's 60 degrees. I mean, dang, you know,

you get a hundred women in the room. It gets a little, it gets a little arms, little hot.

Lots, we have lots of raffles. If you can't come next Tuesday, we do have a really awesome

coach purse and wallet that is for pre raffle. So you can get raffle tickets for that now. And

when I'm saying this, this is, we're talking a dollar a piece or six for five dollars. So I mean,

it's, it's very, very affordable. So we encourage people to, we encourage all the ladies to join

we just, you know, kind of have cooking is right now we are visiting all of our partner programs.

So all of the programs that receive funding from United Way are having a visit from Ben,

our community engagement director. And then also Anna, our new, our new marketing staff person.

And so that's just a way to help her get a little more, you know, acclimated with United Way.

You know, she is in her third week on this job and she is doing fabulous work. It is,

she is a wonderful addition to our team. And I mean, if you just jump on our website and take a look,

you can, you can see somebody's working hard at it, right? Like it looks great. Also, my free

taxes is available again this year. So if you would like to have the opportunity to file your

taxes for free, I'm almost all individuals qualify for that. But you can jump on that from our

website as well. And just, you know, answer a few screener questions and it'll tell you and you

can proceed to file your state and federal taxes for free on that website. And I know I've helped

my daughters use it. I know you've used it. I mean, a lot of the community members have used it

and saved. And the idea really is, right? If we can keep $150 in your pocket instead of you

paying that for, you know, for having that service done, that's important. And that helps people,

you know, I don't know if it gets you ahead, but it might help you stay ahead, right? And it's

a help to people's budgets. So that is all also available on our website.

I've been using my free taxes for so long that I actually reached out to them last year and was

like, you know, I've got a great ad for you guys. You know, my free taxes, so easy or radio DJ

could use it. They haven't gotten back to me. They haven't gotten back yet. They're busy processing

taxes. Yeah, they are pretty busy over there, but I cannot stress enough how simple it is,

how basic they make it and how good you can feel knowing that you filed. I've been doing it for a

long time and, all right, so far so good. My other IRS said, oh, I'm kidding. I don't make

enough for them to pay attention to me. If all of a sudden there's black suits, like, you know,

we'll just, we'll figure it out. They're great. They're a great resource for you,

especially for those in the certain income range that it fits. It's a perfect resource,

and you can feel confident not only that your taxes are filed correctly, but you're getting the best

you can get you can get for back. Yeah, and you know, and it is nice because it does do a little

screen, right? Like if you, if something's not right, it'll flag it and tell you, hey, you know,

check this out. Which is really cool. One thing that I think is just important too, because not

everyone has access to devices. So if you, you know, need access to a computer, there are certainly

free access at the library. All of the libraries in our communities, but it is also mobile friendly.

So if you have a smartphone, and often people seem to have at least one or the other, you know,

either a smartphone or a tablet or, or a, you know, Chromebook or maybe a, maybe a laptop.

So it is friendly on all of those devices. So I just think that that's important too.

I would say it's like the second or third year I was doing it too, where I was in the middle

of filling it out, and I let my fur brother outside, and he's out there for two minutes, and he's,

you know, barking a storm up because the squirrels are forming against him or something like that.

I ran out, yeah, it's fair. I ran out there, get him. I was out there for like 20 minutes though,

and I come back, and it had, I thought it had timed out, but it's saved by where I was.

And that is nice, you can come back.

Kind of a nice feature there too, and everything. And it feels, I have to say too, there's

something about it that just feels good about doing your own taxes, and it feels, you know,

I don't know, you know, I don't know how to put a word to it necessarily, other than it just

feels really good to be able to do that. I encourage you to check that out. Get your tickets for

I just want to add just a little something is, you know, not only is it just the 24 hour resource,

and that's available for people, but it's also, I think, important for people to understand the

credibility of 211. You know, it is statewide, but we are also, you know, I believe there are like

27 states that are statewide, and then other states have maybe, you know, partial coverage,

but we are also accredited through inform USA. So I think that that's really important to understand

that our resource specialists are going through special training. They are helping Wisconsin

Addiction Recovery Helpline is a big part of 211. So there, you know, there's really a lot going

on and we're also able to now offer a warm line, you know, kind of a touchback of sorts. So if you

call for any reason, we will ask you if we should give you a call back in a couple days, you know,

just to see if you found what you needed. But on the, on the side of PCS Helpline or on the

Addiction Recovery Helpline, there's an opportunity, you don't have to, but there's an opportunity

to be put into this warm line circle, so to speak, where people are checking in with you and

touching base with you. And I think that that's just really important because sometimes it's just

that extra voice, that extra hand, we also have a texting option through 211. So I mean, it's really

however you want to, we try to meet people where they're at, but I think it is just important for

people to understand that it's not just and not that they wouldn't do a good job, but it's not

just somebody sitting at a phone. I mean, this is, there's a lot of training and there's, you know,

the accreditation, there's a lot of facets to, you know, to what 211 can offer to our community

and all of the counties that we serve. A big thank you to everybody working over there,

and of course the whole United Way team up and down the state for that matter. I appreciate

them all one day. Right, right. One of them we are definitely going to is the one at LKFA because

our friends at LKFA were named one of the top 11 fish fries in Wisconsin and the Wisconsin

Rapids area. Congratulations to them. Shout out to all the businesses that were nominated in

them one and all that. And you know, and really not surprising, right? Because I mean,

everything I've not full confession, I've not had their fish fry. But everything that I have had

there is very good. So I'm not surprised that they would that they would rise to the top.

years and everything. She's very good at what she doesn't care. She's a lot about this area

in the reporting. I wonder if she sampled them all. Oh, that's a good question.

April is in the Stevens Point area. She called in a request this morning on the sunrise show,

which you can catch Monday through Friday, seven to eight on 105 WIRI. She gave us a song request

and she's like, Oh, can I give you a birthday? I don't know if she didn't realize I do both

boarding shows or what it was, but it felt like she was treating me like I was two different people.

I don't know, but we were talking about it. She said you put on your country in Western

voice for the first hour. I absolutely do. With us talking, I don't know why it came up,

where it came from. But April said, yeah, my name's April, even though it was born in March.

Just out of nowhere. So wish you a good one, April. Enjoy your day. She was fun. She was fun.

Maybe she was a preemie. Maybe her mom had her heart set on April. And then she came along

three weeks early. I was supposed to be born April first. I was born in February. So I get it.

I get it. I get it. I get it. Although April fool would have been a little bit

appropriate. Very, very, very fitting. We wish April and Mitch a very happy birthday.

April, you bragged everybody. Not only is your birthday in March, but that you're a qualified

today. We take a look at our celebrity list. Tyler, the creator is 34. Fantastic, creative,

rapper, comedian. He's really good at what he does. He's got a great new album out too.

Wow. Here's a kind of, I don't know how long ago this was, but this is a blast from the past.

Bubba Sparks is 48. Who was that? He was like a musician for a little while. Yeah, at

least one yet. Yeah, a little while. Bubba Sparks. I'm guessing he may still be. Boy, what was his?

What kind of music is that? I want to say it was pop. It was pop. I had to be right. Yeah,

but I don't not rap. It made me, I wouldn't call it rap, but that's me. Bubba Sparks, American rapper.

Yeah. Okay. All right. I guess. Yeah. Interesting. Rapping to me is a lot more than just

rhyming words, but we had a 2001 single called Ugly. Okay. Peaked at number 15 on the billboard chart.

You know, it's weird. Usually you either remember the song or the artist, but it's rare that you

remember both when it comes to like a one hit wonder or anything like that. I got nothing.

Shaquille O'Neal is 53. Oh, actually feels kind of young for him in some ways just because he has

been started a part of the public eye since he was 18. He had a similar thing that he dealt with

because a lot of people say that LeBron James is such a big star in part because of the way he's

handled social media, you know, having such so many things thrown at him when he was 17, 18 years old.

I don't disregard any of that, but I would like to point to Shaquille O'Neal as having done all the

dealt with the most of the same type of things that LeBron did and quite frankly accomplished more

than LeBron. Now LeBron James is one of the top three greatest players of all time and he's

proving it almost every day, especially in his 40s, evering itching a double double and all this.

But with Shaquille O'Neal, outside of his free throws, which everybody pokes at, they poke at it

because there was literally no other holes in this man's game and he was maybe the most dominant

force we've ever seen in the game. There's a kid Victor Wimbanyama that's 7 foot 2 right now

who's got handles like a point guard who's really good. There's plenty of great players and I'm

not saying that there aren't bigger guys or anything, but the size and the agility and speed of

Shaquille O'Neal and it's prime. The sheer force of that man and just one of the greater smiles,

one of the greater personalities. Yeah, yeah, just okay, but let's talk about important things.

Remember when his shoes came out when you could buy those? I remember you want to talk about

when they had wonders. The whole chef ran. Yeah, but like I could just remember they'd have like

you go to shoe store, especially back when they had like many athletic shoe stores. And there'd be

like one sample pair that was like his actual size and then you could get up. It was crazy.

I have a size 12 feet and when that was going on, I put my shoe compared to

probably can put your shoe inside that too. I might have been able to. It just dwarfed it.

All this being said and I have a lot of respect for Shaquille. I think it's one of the

one of the better arcs of a career and the way he has handled his career and what he's doing now

on TNT with the guys. It's the best sports pregame and after show there is the TNT line up

and the show that they have there. All that being said, I do have a complaint from Mr. O'Neil.

I would like him and John Cena and the Kelsey brothers and everything leave some commercials

for us actors. Please, it's those four like those four guys running every commercial, every

single. We're lucky they're not doing local commercials. Otherwise, there'd be really no

room for anybody else. Please, as a working actor, would you just give me one roll? Let me do the

icy hot ads or something. Just give us one thing, Shaq. You've got so many commercials.

Wild personality. You couldn't, if you were starting your career and you were saying,

this is what I want to accomplish, you would never be able to go all the ways that Shaquille O'Neil

says taken his career. It's crazy. DL Hugley is 62. Great comedian. Great standout comedian.

Connie Britton is 58. Her is Reina Nashville or Abby Clark on 9-1-1. Good character actor. She's

been in a handful of things over the years. Kiki D is 78. Don't go breaking my heart. I got the

music in me. Don't go breaking my heart with Elton John. Her biggest hit from 1976. Interestingly,

a little bit later today, I and Sally Kissner are going to be talking with Michael Kavanaugh,

who's going to be coming to town here singing the songs of Billy Joel, Elton John. Yeah,

I was just hearing about that. Somebody was just talking about that. I think maybe at Rotary,

they were talking about him, that artist and him coming to town and how talented he is.

He is incredibly talented. He was hand picked by Billy Joel to play Billy Joel. I don't

even know if he has to have anything else on his resume, but I agree. Can't wait to talk to him

a little bit later. That's going to be a fun interview. Rob Reiner is 78. This is Spinal Tap,

The Princess Bride when Harry Met Sally, a few good men, was of course Meathead and all in the

family. Another one of those amazing careers. Just a wild career. One of my favorite shows of

all time all in the family. I wouldn't say similar, but a little similar to a guy we were talking

about last week, Ron Howard. Going from TV to directing and some of that, just an interesting

arc and a very, very, very good director. All of those movies I mentioned are great. I love all

in the family. This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride. I pretty much watched those on a loop.

I throw a Mel Brooks movie in there, but once in a while they're a Gina Wilder and Richard

prior movie, but those were the movies I grew up on. Airplane and stuff like that. Love those movies.

David Gilmore is 79 Pink Floyd Legend. Then there's some people no longer with us. Mary Wilson,

born in 1944, member of the Supremes. Ed McMahon. Yes, sir. Born in 1923,

pressed away in 2009. Another amazing career like Ed McMahon and everything he accomplished.

He is used as a caricature now, but he was the perfect co-host for the Tonight Show, which

Johnny Carson, those producers, those writers, Johnny Carson, Ed McMahon, Doc Sullivan,

greatest lineup of a night show there's ever been. There's other shows that I like more

growing up and everything, but getting the chance to get to see Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon

work and everything is part of the reason. If you like anything I do, it's a big part in those two

and watching those guys interact and work. Yeah, Ed McMahon laughed at almost all of Johnny's jokes.

That was part of his job. That was what he's the sidekick. That's what you do. Figure out how to make

it look authentic. And it's not known enough the times that he kind of pushed back on Johnny,

because that was part of the bit. I don't know about that, Johnny. I don't know about that,

sir, or something like that. There's plenty of art to, or plenty of depth to what Ed McMahon did.

He wasn't just up there laughing. He was very good at what he did. But you know the banter,

though, to between those two. Yes, it was part of the job, but I also feel like it was really

authentic. Just completely. You know what I mean? It wasn't, I mean, I'm sure sometimes it was like,

okay, now you're going to do this, but it was also just felt very natural. You know, like just a

natural. Absolutely. banter back and forth. Speaking of good natural banter back and forth,

Lou Costello from Abinacostello. It was born on this day in 1906. Of course, who's on first,

one of the most famous comedic bits of all time. And and something that I love getting my younger

students to work on. I'll give them a homework or I'll give them a little project. I want,

you know, I'll pair these two up that aren't working very well together. Or they're both good

actors, but they they they're not good at working with other actors or something. And I'll make

them do this bit together. And I'm not saying they go on to do great things or whatever, but it just

I've never had anybody ever doing this for over 10 years. I've never had a pair of students not

come out of it and like, this is a great bit. Or this is hilarious. Who are these guys? Or any of

that. It's fantastic. And one of the greatest creatives of all time, Michelangelo board in this day

in 1475 passed away in 1564 Italian reticence artist famous for painting the sistine chapel

in the sculpture of David, of course. That time twister, because when do you say 1475? Yeah,

you never say it threw me off. I'll be out of bed. It threw me off. And the sistine chapel,

that's another one that people often miss bail miss say. But yeah, Michelangelo, my

you're when your work is like, there's some great artists in history, in recent history even. And

we promote and we support and everything. They're amazing. We're at a heck of a time creatively.

Then there's like guys like Michelangelo, where their work has been around for centuries. Oh,

you're really, you've been really, you've been a popular artist for 30, 40 years. That's nice.

That's nice for you. My work is bad. That's amazing. Very happy birthdays and

anniversaries to everybody out there celebrating. I can't think of a better way to celebrate

than with our friends at LCAFA had done over there today to 211 market avenue and beautiful

We're going to have some fun right now and get into an interesting one here. Some city folks

just made a fool of themselves on TikTok. And as a city folk, I will tell you this is not the

last time this is going to happen. So this time it was a couple who was upset because they booked a

mountain cabin that was on a mountain. Just sit there for a second there. They rented a mountain

cabin and were upset when it was on a mountain. She starts the video by saying okay we're in

Gattelberg, Tennessee. We just checked into our cabin and we are leaving our cabin and then she

says it's way too sloppy. The mountain is too sloppy. My God. She then proceeds to turn the camera

around and say, quote, let me show you what we're dealing with. And then she shows a driveway which

is indeed sloppy, but it is again and a great mountain with smoky mountains. Okay. Yeah.

It takes you like a hot second. You could even just Google Gattelberg and you would know that it's

not the plans of Oklahoma. Here. Nice. Here's one quick thing. Okay. I cannot stress this enough.

Um, that uh, it is, it is never the, the earth's fault. Like nothing. Like if the mountain is

sloppy, that's the mountain. That's on you, not the mountain. The earth is never the problem.

Is this anyone's fault besides hers? No. I mean, because let's be real. If you were going to

market your mountain home on VRBO or Airbnb or you know what I mean, like something,

you might have other things to say, like beautiful view, but instead you say mountain home. Like

how much more obvious? I don't know how much more could you be? Yeah. I don't know. Later in the

video, the girl complained the whole mountain that we have to drive through is very uphill. And

needless to say, the internet let them have it. Here are some of the best comments. How dare the

mountains be mountains? Last year I went to the beach and left after seeing all that sand and

water. Could you believe that at the beach? Um, my brother could ride this, his scooter up that.

And then another person, maybe try Kansas, maybe, maybe, I mean, come on. I just think it's funny

because you're really just making a butt out of yourself, aren't you? I mean, like really,

like you're putting this out there. I hope she has a really good day job because, yeah,

she's not going to be an influencer. Here's the mixed bag of this though. I want to use this as a

daily write story. And I even want to play some of the TikTok video. At the same time, I don't want to

like give this person any more like, you know, like, we have a setter name or anything. No, that's true.

That's true. But I think, I mean, seriously, now one thing, I mean, once you've read like 20,

you've read them all, but there is something of comic relief to reading the comments at least.

I mean, that is, that is one thing that's a benefit. I just can't even, I don't really know what

to do with that. I don't. This is definitely a, that ain't right story. It's a very, that

it right story. Do you imagine being her mother? I'd be like, oh, oh, yeah. Yeah, no, no. Like, I

I'm asking her to change her last name. Like, I'm, I'm, you know, I'm among those. Not that mothers

are responsible for their children's actions, but not at all. But yeah, let's go ahead and see if we

can play a little of this. I don't know. I don't know if it'll play for a minute. We just checked

into our cabin. And we are leaving our cabin. Actually, we're going to go stay down to

hang out. That's something's good for you. Walk in, you walk out. Yeah. We're not, let's, let's show

you. Let's show you what we're dealing with here. It's beautiful view. You know, however. Okay,

I can't do any more of this. I can't, I can't. I don't know how people do this. I don't know how

people watch these things. Um, yeah. Now, here's the other part of this too. I will say, um,

if these two, there, there is a possibility they're doing this just to go viral. But I don't know.

I mean, oh, yeah, maybe nowadays, there is no, there is no shame. There is no such thing as bad press

anymore. Like, I mean, my God, look at politics for God's sake. There is no shame anymore. So,

I, I don't know, they were not deceived in the description. No, no, God, no, no. Let's take a call.

You know, I mean, I, I just, I heard the video and I, I'm picturing probably

mid 20s. Obviously, probably, you know, someone has probably never been outside the, the city of

Atlanta or whatever. Some of those, but she clearly has a smartphone. She could have Googled the

location she was going to. Yeah. Well, she was probably thinking it was maybe Malton's theme in

their, in their cabin. There's going to be pictures of mountains in the cabin. There's,

there's going to be, you know, maybe a rocky fireplace. Hey, Kevin, let's not justify this

or her. She's just stupid. I'm not just a fine boy. That's the thing. You know, this is one of,

so the reason weren't certain words exist are for people like this. If we can't use like

dumb or stupid for people like this, then what do we have these words for?

I don't know. Again, I'm a city person. I'm, I'm saying this against another city person.

And even I understand that this was never, like, the idea that the, the mountain area is just

this like one little spot, but everything else is all like, you know, paved and everything.

And it's flat like the, the, um, there is one thing about this though that I will say.

Um, I, I got to think I, if you are a person watching this and you had any doubts about any of

this stuff, they just like answered it all for you as far as like what mountain life is like or

what the, you know, rural life can be like or any of that stuff. And I, I will say it's, it's

probably helping the, uh, the advertisers are the, the smoke, smokey mountain bureau and all that

and, you know, all those things. So not that they needed it. I don't know, but the best comment is,

you know, I went, I went on a beach vacation and I left because there was too much sand. Yes.

Yeah. Yeah. Too much water. I don't, that's way too much. When did they start going this?

What did they, when did all this happen? But did I get to, I got to wet.

Yeah. Uh, they're probably, they're probably used to the mounds of skyscrapers and,

and looking at your neighbors as you're looking out your window is probably what they're used to.

It's like I was driving through Wisconsin and they had all these cows.

And there was all these cows around. What was that? When did, where did that happen?

It's the desilious complaints I've ever heard. Um, um,

uh, cab, we appreciate you, man. Do you have a good morning?

We're talking about monopoly. They got a new board game out and we're going to talk about board

gaming and how many people might be cheating on it and keeping eye on it coming up on the morning show.

We're looking forward to that. It's going to be a lot of fun. Um, well, with the weather yesterday,

I can only imagine that some people at least in our area were playing some board games and, uh,

doing some of that to keep themselves busy. I know that, uh, our library, McMillan Library is

a bunch of board games over there that people are able to rent out or play while they're there.

And, um, talking with the gang over there, there's been a real rise of board games. I would say,

going back to the pandemic and everything of people just playing these more. Um, with that,

of course, these companies have seen this and are looking to adapt and do stay fresh and new and

all that. Monopoly has done this, uh, maybe better than most. Clue is very similar, but there is a,

if you want a Wisconsin, there's a Wisconsin Monopoly game. There's, uh, you know, other states.

There's, um, ones that are Star Wars or Simpsons. I've got a Simpsons Monopoly game.

There's all kinds of them. Um, and same thing with Clue. This is how a lot of these board games have

stayed relevant after decades of being out there, which is just so cool to me. Um, I don't know

how long this will last. I hope it continues to long after we're gone, but, you know, even

whatever the regard of it, I think the board game industry has lasted a lot longer than most people

would have expected. Yeah. I think so too, but it is a great, I mean, it's a great family past time.

Ah, it's so great. Uh, some of my favorite memories, uh, playing Monopoly with my parents and

my brother and sister and stuff. And that's the first game they were going to talk about here,

because Hasbro has announced a new version of Monopoly called Monopoly app banking, which makes

the game a little more digital. The board game elements are mostly the same with a few friendly

tweaks. Parkplace and boardwalk have been switched to rocket launch plan, a rocket launch pad in

the moon and other new properties include a chocolate factory, a VR roller coaster, and a dinosaur

park. The main difference is that there's no banker and no physical money. Instead, there's a

mobile app that processes all the transactions. Hasbro says the app is great for speeding up the game,

making it more accessible to younger players and making it harder to cheat. But naturally,

some people don't like it. A common complaint is that the new version can't be used to teach

kids about math and how to handle money. And some parents are pretending like their kids don't have

access to devices with apps. If that's a concern, the good news is the classic monopoly will be sold,

and there are hundreds of millions of copies of the original game out there. If you want, you don't

have to get the new version. It's not like that's all they're selling. Uh, the app, quote, app banking

version is expected to show up in major retailers this August. It'll be about 24 bucks, and the mobile

app will be free to download, which of course makes sense. You know, you're already spending money

on the game. You know, I don't, well, whatever. I'm more of a traditional, like board, you know,

like have the game in front of you and, and the banker and all those kinds of things. I agree.

It probably does cut down on the cheating. And you know, it is something for, right, the next

generation. Like I, I don't know. To me, I would not be interested in this, but if somebody had it

and wanted to play it, I would play. If one of the things that keeps, because I understand the

money is a big part of the game. And one of the things that they never tell you in all of those

instructions of monopoly is exactly how to like, you know, where to keep things, how to put this.

Everybody has their own way of doing it. Like my dad has all of his stuff in a, and like lined up

in a pile, you know, like just all slammed together and everything. My mom has everything organized

and lined up in her own personal way or deeds here, her money here and all the money separated.

Everybody's a little different about this. And just like every household has their own rules

for monopoly. Like everybody has a little bit of different rules. Well, and I don't think you can

take away part place in boardwalk. No, you can't. No, that is big of a fan of the moon as I am.

I don't like that. I don't like that change at all. You know, when we were talking about different

versions, when you were bringing up like all the different versions of board games, as the person

probably buying the games at our house, like that drove me crazy when my kids were little and we

go through the toy aisle, you know, how about just the game of memory, right? Right. And then all

of a sudden, there's like 25 of them. Well, we have the regular one, but now my kids want the

door a one, and then they want the this one, and then they want this one. I'm like, oh, we already

have that game. I remember that. I remember that. With this game in particular, though,

if this kids younger people to play it, all cool. Yeah, I think it's very cool. But I do really

like the idea of I love when we can teach or we can learn without knowing we're teaching or

learning. And monopoly and board games are a really good way of that. I'm glad that they brought up

the counting of money thing. I'm horrible at math. I would be a lot worse if we didn't play board

games. And it wasn't on me. No matter what my age was, whether I was seven or 17, play a monopoly,

I had to be in charge of my money, my own money. What game piece? What game piece are you? Oh,

I was always the race car on the traditional monopoly. I was always the race car. I always wanted

the top hat, but my sister always got all the horse fight you for the horse. Yeah, I would

seriously roll you over for the horse. I love the top hat. That was my favorite, but my sister

usually got it or the dog. Actually, Jill got the dog and then we lost the dog piece. So then we

yeah, she probably still has it. You know, I have a funny monopoly story. So we were probably

upper elementary age. And I was at a friend's house and there were probably four or five of us

girls playing. But you know, this was it was a sleepover. So like the game started one day,

then the next day we're still playing it. But now we're kind of fighting, right? Like 10, 11 year old

girls. And so we're laying on their living room floor. I will never forget this. We're laying

on the living room floor and her dad comes in and he's like, girls, what if a big tornado came

right now, you know, like this? And we were just like, you know, leave us a look, but this has gone

on long enough, right? And he cut. I was and he watched the middle and he just like scrambles our

game and like stuff is flying everywhere. He's like, now get outside and play. And it was fabulous.

It is one of my best monopoly memories ever. Cause I mean, we were just squabbly. You know, I mean,

like we were just getting and I've had that where my kids have friends over and it's like, okay,

let's do something else. You know, you divert attention somewhere else, but I will never forget

him coming in there. And just like that stuff that money and stuff was just flying all over their

living room. He's like, get outside. I can't speak for most, but for me, that's parenting. What a

one. It was great move by him. That was a great move. Because is there an end to monopoly?

No, I mean, there is as people go broke and they're out, right? Technically, there is, but the game

could go on forever. Sometimes when we play it at home, I mean, I played it for a while, but

sometimes when we do now, we'll just put a time limit on it at at two hours, at two hours,

whoever has the most value, you know, is the winner. I gotta text my sister. I want to say it was

like two weeks we left a board up on the table once and my mother just finally was like,

enough, and we came home and it was all put away. Like you set up, or you set up, we would set up

the card table. You know, I mean, like set up a separate table for the game or whatever and do it.

But yeah, I, you know, I really hope that your sister has that little dog. I gotta ask her.

So we were touching on the game monopoly and cheating and some of this and everything. But

one of my monopoly stories growing up, my father was always the banker because he is a human

counselor. Who's the banker? He was a human. He is a human calculator this day. So he was always

the banker and he always handed out the money. He was very fast with it, really good with it,

efficient, made sure everybody got their money. Really fast. Like one up his sleeve. Exactly.

Because my father had this trick, this trick, he called it. It's cheating, but he called it a trick

where he would put a fight. He'd hand everybody other money out. And then while he was hand in

the five hundreds out, he'd slide one under the board table, like just one right in front of him

under the board table, just in case. It was just a case money. I'm not going to use it, just

a case idea. I mean, but he always needed it. He always needed it. You know, I was always the banker,

like when we were kids, but but then as our kids started to play, you know, if one of them wanted

to do it, I was totally fine with that. But otherwise in general, like if you and I were playing

right now, I'm the banker. Right on. Right on. And that's that's for the speed of the game. That's

probably a good idea. Now going from both continually our board game conversation and touching a little

bit on the cheating part of this. Well, according to a new poll, 33% of Americans have a partner

who is admitted to cheating in the past and 14% said they they always cheat at video games at

board games and all this. How do you do video games? But yeah, yeah, I don't, well, there's, I

guess there's codes. There's things you could do there, I guess. That's outside my world.

The poll asked how often do you cheat when you when you recreationally play games, board games,

card games and video games? 51% said never. 19% said rarely. 9% said sometimes. 3% said often.

2% said always. 13% said never play games. And just 3% said preferred not to say. Oh, I mean,

that's the same, right? Yeah, tell me you're cheating without telling me you're cheating. That's

that's omission. Yeah, yeah. Like I'd be done by association. Yeah. If you break it down,

men are more likely to cheat at games than women. People from the coasts are more likely to

cheat than people from the Midwest and younger people are more likely to cheat than older folks.

In fact, the poll, they pulled more than 6,000 people and 0% of seniors say that they always

cheated. Just 1% said often and so on and so on. The numbers are very low. Oftentimes people

cheat because they want to win. 12% of people say that they are care a lot about winning casual games.

Why would you, if not for winning, why would you cheat? Yeah, I mean, if you're bored,

then don't play that game. You're obviously not working. So I can't think of any other reasons

of them to your board or you just want to see if you can get away. I mean, we did have,

we did have somebody in the radio days way back when I first started them. It was just curious.

That's what they told us why they were, you know, doing some things around here. So I don't know.

Regardless, the numbers are all lies. I don't believe any of these numbers.

If you're cheating at video games or car games or board games or whatever, how often do you play

a board game with strangers? Like, nothing that makes it okay. But if you're cheating around

strangers, that's already pretty bad, but it's, you know, okay, it is what it is. If you're

cheating at board games and you're playing with family members with loved ones, like that I'm

not going to believe you're going to answer a survey correctly. You might just want to win it all

costs, right? Like, you're the reigning champion. You're going to make sure that you, I don't know.

What's fun though is when you live with somebody like that, like my father, but they still don't

win that often. I mean, isn't cheating if two people in your house are playing battleship

and you're standing behind one and you're giving signals to the other one across the room?

Is that cheating? Here is a great debate that they've been having. There's that

Yes, in board games and sports forever. Baseball is the sport that holds itself as the

gentleman's game and all these things and yet cheating and baseball has been a part of the

game since the dawn of its inception. That's what I mean, isn't it? Or like card games, poker

games, right? Classic. You see that in TV all the time. The waitress is in somebody's pocket,

right? And she's coming around with drinks, but she's signaling, I mean, I'm not saying it's right,

but it is a known part of the game, isn't it? Yeah, it's an interesting part of it. It's in

nature's like, where's the line for you of cheating and oh, you're just finding like, you know,

loopholes or just ways around. So it probably depends who you're playing with. I'd be more inclined

to do stuff like that if I'm playing with family. Then I would be, you know, I'd be like with strangers.

We were just playing a dice game not that long ago and I'm like, one of the people we were playing

with. I'm like, dude, and there was some way that he would like not just toss the dice, but like,

kind of twist them and I'm like, what is going on? And then right away, I'm like, do you have a

magnet under the table? I'm like, I'm trying to find him out. I knew a guy who, they play bones

all the time by where I lived and he could always roll sevens and people thought he was cheating.

He just was really, really good at it. He was really good at it. Yeah, oh, because he would

actually like, we weren't even playing the game and we're just, he just like, stand in there and

boom, seven, boom, seven. Like just was really good at it. Yeah, we weren't even, it wasn't him

for money or nothing. You just show us that he could do it. Um, there, there was something there.

I can't put my finger out of it, but I do feel like there was something there. He never give them

different dice. Uh, yeah. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, tried this new dice, not the ones that

you came in. I don't know. I think it is, I don't know. It's whatever. It's fun. Yeah. Yeah.

Exactly. I agree. Uh, I learned that when I was a kid. I learned, I, I can't remember what it was

or what a board game we were playing, but I know I, I cheated at it. It didn't feel good. I

didn't like winning and I hadn't done a sense. I, I, I love the element. I just not, it's not

worth winning to me to cheat because it just doesn't feel as good. When you, when you win, just

outright that there's nothing like that. It's like men playing women's sport. They did

really win. I mean, I guess, yeah. Yeah. I guess. Yeah. That's a weird comp, but okay. Uh, we'll
