And I want to get into what's a common tradition or holiday that may not exist in 25 years.

I was hoping to catch you guys before you started the entertainment section.
You didn't give me enough time to call in about the vending machines. That's all my stuff.

So that might kind of know this area a little bit because this is happening in Minnesota. I saw this on YouTube last night watching one of my, you know, one of the guys that like to watch hunting fishing.
He was up in Stillwater, Minnesota by McDonald meets, I think he said, don't know if you've heard of that or not.
No, no, I haven't. I don't think that you walk in the door and there is vending machines where you can get like jerk all your meats.
Like you know snack meat. Oh, jerky. Snack sticks. You know, like he showed this.
It was just the really cool thing and you'll sit there and can buy all your meat and everything without even walking the store.
You can have right there in that vending machine. Fantastic. I love that. Oh my gosh. I love this. It's a great idea.
Fabulous. We need this in every Midwest city. Every Midwest city. Now I would only buy it if it was like right next to the meat store.
Yeah.
Like in a middle of nowhere.
Travel down a gravel road, meat vending machine.
I'd be honest. I'd stop. I don't know if I'm going to get one. But I'm going to stop and think about it. I'm going to stop and think about it.
We never know when you need a slim gym. I'm going through. I'm taking a hike through so one of our great pasts or something like that around here.
I see what I was looking at it up. I'm thinking about it. I'm thinking about it. I'm thinking about it.
Let's take with the granola. Could you not imagine putting this into like a bar? Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
You know, and you know, get a whole of a country fresh meats or what's got the local meat department, you know, and get them together and stock these.
And they have them right there at the at the bars that don't serve food.
And we need to talk to Smith Brothers. Yes.
Yes.
And we should also send a big like you're welcome to everybody because we did like our news.
This is just a fantastic idea that the Midwest is going to be eternally thankful for.

I say we say we right now stop doing what we're doing and we all put all of our effort into this idea.

The bane of my existence is wet socks.
There are a few things in this world that I disdain more than wet socks.
And it happens every day.
Every day it happens to me.
Right.
I got these clown shoes for feet and it seems like they just love to find a paw.
Like anything wet.
They're attracted to water.
Right.
Yes.
Yeah.
So with it I want this vending machine in my house.
Well James, maybe if you stopped making your socks out of towels you wouldn't have this problem.
I'm telling you it's going to catch on.

I love that.

We got an interesting one here.
But it's been a debate for quite some time.
The Beatles versus the Rolling Stones.
A little rock and roll debate.
Oh yeah.
Now there is also another one of Are You A Beatles or an Elvis man?
There's that one.
There's a lot of these.
Now I do think it's noteworthy that all of these that we're mentioning all like each other
were influenced by each other.
Right.
And we're actually quite good friends, especially Mick Jagger and Travolta.
All right.
Travolta.
Lenin.
Lenin.
They were friends, yeah.
Where did Travolta come from?
I'm trying to figure that one out myself.
Jagger.
Where?
Why?
Oh my god.
That was a weird brain turn.
It was.
Oh my god.
Why did I think of that?

I guess.
I don't know.
I have no idea.
An indie rocker named Chris Dollar Raveya decided to investigate which band has been more
influential.
He used Wikipedia's list of 479 mainstream rock performers to see which artists they name as
influences.
Oh.
So that's an interesting way to do it.
I like that idea.
It's not comprehensive, but it's an interesting way.
Yeah.
And the Beatles won.
Okay.
But the Stones didn't come in second.
Oh.
Led Zeppelin did.
Oh.
Really?
Wow.
Wow.
Stones, man.
That's pretty interesting.
Cannot call themselves the world's greatest rock and roll band anymore.
Just can't do it.
And here are the results that he came up with.
So again, the Beatles had 210 mentions as far as artists mentioning them as they're one
of their bigger influences.
No surprise there.
Yeah.
Really?
Led Zeppelin came in next with 151.
Wow.
That's a big gap too.
That's like 60-70.
60-70.
Yeah.
Wow.
Wow.
The Rolling Stones at 146.
So not too far behind.
Yep.
You two at 139.
Oh.
That's surprising.
A little bit.
Yeah.
David Bowie at 127.
He should be higher.
Bob.
Yeah.
Bob Dylan at 125.
Yep.
That makes sense.
Elton John at 114.
Okay.
The tag with that is Queen at 114.
Jimmy Hendrix at 112.
Wow.
And not because I don't love him.
And I've seen him in concert and everything.
I'm a big fan.
But a little surprise to see at number 10, the Red Hot Chili Peppers at 112.
Wow.
Tied with Jimmy Hendrix.
Wow.
But then you think about how long their career has been.
I think that has a lot to do with all the, with the exception, with a couple of exceptions.
Obviously, the Beatles weren't together that long.
And their influence has been outsized for how long they stayed together.
But the other ones, for the most part except for Hendrix, were, you know, long careers.
Which makes sense that people would pick up on them over the years.
Yeah.
The list went to 15 and the last five in order are Bruce Springsteen, Green Day,
Aerosmith, The Who, and Metallica.
Green Day.
Yeah.
That's interesting.
Okay.
Seeing some different genres and different styles brought up here.
But it's, it is still, I think, noteworthy.
Because I don't know.
In 10, 20 years, they do this list again.
What it might look like, you know, who might be on there.
I imagine that in 10, 20 years from now, a Beyonce, a Taylor Swift.
Right.
They're going to show up on these lists.
Right.
That, probably.
What's interesting, if you went back and asked the Beatles or the Rolling Stones,
what were their influences?
I mean, for all of them, Elvis probably would have been on that list.
Chuck Berry would have been on that list.
You know, a lot of the old R&B guy that they loved, all of them used the blues, you know,
Muddy Waters.
Muddy Waters from Howlin' Wolf, all those guys.
Those would have been the most influence on the list.
But as, of course, music progresses and time goes on.
Well, an interesting, almost every one of these artists on this list.
I, in fact, yeah, I was going to say except for you two.
No, that's not fair.
You two did as well.
Every one of them, Clay, and we'll note a blues artist as one of their biggest influences.
I almost, you two did Angel of Harlem.
They did a whole song about it.
They sang with Baby King.
Yeah, I mean, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, even that one.
Yep.
So that, that should be noteworthy too.
It should be.
And I bring it up in part because, too, being first or being early on,
something doesn't mean that you were the greatest to ever do it always.
Sometimes it does.
But sometimes it just means that you got the ball rolling.
And there is an eternal credit that deserves to be given to you for that.
Right.
Every song, every pop song in the radio that we've heard our whole lives,
the Beatles can take a little credit for.
Like they came up with that format.
We're still doing the same format.
Opening verse, reframe.
Oh, second verse, reframe.
Guitar solo, bridge.
Yeah, yeah.
This is the same format we're still using.
Nobody has had any strength to change this.
Every once in a while, you have like an instrumental that's a hit,
or you have like a stream of consciousness.
There's no like no real structure to it.
You'll get a few of those, yes, but for the most part,
like your standard pop song, you're right.
It has this formula that it goes with.
Absolutely.
It's incredible to think of.
I just want to bring up Bessie Smith.
Oh, my gosh.
Yeah.
She is one of the most influential.
Who gets just lost, by the way, and not mentioned.
As we move further away from that time,
yeah, unfortunately, we're not going to hear quite as much about that,
but you're absolutely right from Melissa.
But all of like the main, you know, like Janice Joplin,
I mean, she paid for Bessie Smith's tombstone in 1970.
She was an extremely influential singer, absolutely.
Especially all the women rock stars from the 70s, 80s, 90s.
There are certain people that get nicknames or earn nicknames,
and you're like, okay, that's justified.
The Queen of the Blues, the Empress of the Blues.
Like, that's her nickname.
That's Bessie Smith.
That tells you something right there.

mentalfloss.com put together a list of artists who surprisingly have never won a Grammy.
This is always an interesting one to me.
And I think speaks to the, you know, the insanity of this stuff.
The industry is what it is, unfortunately.
It is in alphabetical orders.
Oh, okay.
We'll just go through it that way.
Like, Abba.
Abba is never money.
That's a, that's too surprising.
That's too surprising.
But they didn't win Eurovision, though.
Yeah.
That's true.
That's a good thing.
But surprisingly, to me, the Beach Boys never won a Grammy.
That is surprising.
Very surprising they didn't because they sold lots of records, too.
It wasn't just, you know, how creative Brian Wilson was.
It was, they sold tons of records.
I don't understand.
Yeah.
Yeah, but they weren't popular with those the powers that be.
Were they?
That's a good question.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Bob Marley.
Not surprising.
Not really.
He really, again, sadly, the ball rolled after he passed away more than when he was alive.
Well, interestingly, what Melissa just said could apply to Bob Marley as well.

Now, this one shocked me.
I think this is the most shocking one on the list to me.
Diana Ross.
Wow.
Not even with the Supremes.

And she had a very successful solo career after that for many years.
And she's still, wow, that is amazing.
I can't believe it.
I don't know if you can have like Grammys.
You would give one to her.
Guns and roses, the Jonas Brothers.
Like, I just wanted to mention those two bands together.
Could they be any opposite?
Well.
No.
I mean, probably.
Yeah.
But I don't know if that's that surprising.
No.
Not one of those.
Both and really.
Yeah.
Well, the Jonas Brothers had their moment.
So did Guns and roses.
But they didn't really have staying power.
Guns and roses, to me, is like a, when you see a team that's filled with nothing but talent,
but has a horrible coach.
Like, they win in spite of that coach.
Like, I feel like Guns and roses accomplished everything they did in spite of that's a rose.
Yeah.
Oh, God.
Like having one of the worst singers in human history be your lead singer.
And one of the biggest egos, it could not back up that ego.
Sure.
Yeah.
The Jonas Brothers were the definition of niche.
So I'm not surprised they didn't win a Grammy.
No.
But they were very popular.
Yes, they were.
Speaking of journey has not won a Grammy.
Again.
I mean, not that different than the Jonas Brothers.
No.
They had their thing.
They were very popular.
Again, like you said, still are in a lot of ways.
I mean, people love their songs.
But yeah, they never got any critical respect when they were around.
And it's an interesting line that can exist where you could be so big and so popular.
And yet you almost lose respect.
Like you don't get the respect that maybe you deserve.
I'm not a journey guy at all.
No.
I can't think of anything I really enjoy about journey.
Or like, and that's, that's in part because I played their music to death in my previous reading job.
That would do it.
But I'll be one of the first person to tell you.
It's Steve Perry's got an amazing voice.
Right.
Like, and there's hits, their songs are still relevant.
They sold millions of records.
I mean, you got to give credit for that.
That's a solid band.
Yeah.
Like, I'm a little surprised.
They didn't win.
That is a surprise to buy a date or a date of Ross, but I'm surprised.
Yeah.
Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj.
I'm kidding.
That's not too surprising.
Yes.
Yeah.
Big hits.
But, you know.
They also still have time.
Yeah.
That is true.
That is true.
I thought I kind of took Katy Perry's gift.
Well, maybe not.
Yeah.
Maybe Nicki Minaj maybe, but yeah.
A band that can't probably won't, I should say.
But, deservingly, Queen and Rush.
Hmm.
Boy.
Queen not winning a Grammy does seem awfully rough.
That seems a little more odd than Rush, because Rush was always,
they had hits, of course, and they saw the rock was not.
Boy, did they have a loyal following?
My goodness.
Still do.
Still do.
But I don't know if they were mainstream enough, really.
So, I don't know.
They're a bit more of a, like, I don't know.
I don't want to say cult classic.
That's not the right way to word it.
But, yeah.
What are your bigger cult bands out there, I would say?
Yeah.

Snoop Dogg and Tupac show up on the end of this list.
And, again, not surprise and beast.
The Grammys don't know what hip hop is.
The Grammys gave it to, like, R and B singers and stuff.
Like, they have, I don't know who is in charge of, like,
writing these things or anything like that.
But whoever is doing this stuff, like, I remember a year,
I think they gave Nickelback, like, best heavy metal album or some things.
Like, they don't know what they're doing.
But the first year that they had best heavy metal album,
they gave it to Jethro Tall.
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
What are you doing?

Well, it's, I guess, so much Tupac isn't surprising.
He was, because his career was short.
Yeah.
That makes sense.
Yeah.
All the stuff he's released.
That's the difference.
All the different genres and everything like that.
I'm a little surprised.

What can go away?
I mean, come on.
So National Puzzle Day.
It's a fun one.
So here are some few some strategies from puzzle experts.
Oh, okay.
To kind of help maybe make it even more fun or maybe give you a little edge on this.
Optimize your environment.
The baseline is is a well lit flat surface.
The multitasking is a good idea too.
So you don't get bored.
Throw on a TV show or maybe the radio.
That's what you should do.
Yeah.
That's what my mom does, actually.
Oh, very nice.
She throws on the radio.
Perfect.
That or her ghost shows.
That's it.
One of the other.
Start by flipping all the pieces face up.
Unless you're, you know, you want to really challenge yourself.
Put it in.
Put it together face down.
I have actually I've heard of people doing that.
Yeah, I was going to say you just have to go with the contours of the puzzle pieces, right?
Yep.
I've known a couple people that really get into this and they will time themselves.
Or there's at least two different people that I've known in my life.
They will not look at the picture.
They'll put it together without looking at the picture and everything.
So those are options.
Sort the pieces into groups.
Obviously start with the edges and corners.
Then break it down by color or notable objects.
Choose the easiest sections to do first so you don't get frustrated.
That's a good tip.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Stand up your stand up from time to time and look at the puzzle from a different angle.
Stretch.
Also good.
Yes.
The stretching.
I thought that's where they're going with it.
Yes, right.
But actually they get you both.
Both are good.
Yeah.
Make it easy to consult the image.
Set the top of the box up so everyone working on the puzzle can see it.
Maybe take a picture so you can also look at it on your phone.
Okay.

Oh, you can zoom into it.
Oh, I suppose.
Yeah.
And some puzzles also include like an extra, just a little poster of the puzzle.
That's, I have seen that as well.
Yeah.
And newer puzzles.
Yeah.
The recent puzzles that I bought have that.

There was a line of birds going, a via birds just going.
And yesterday I was out walking the dog Sam and I saw like in the sky, not only like the biggest V I've ever seen, I think.
I don't know.
I feel like it crossed the whole sky.
But I saw like one following it right afterwards.
Migration right now.
I don't know how much I've ever really paid attention to this, but I feel like in the last couple of years I've just been watching it more.
It is insane how well they do this and telling them to each other.
Like how close these birds are to each other.
And yet in the vibrations and the flattened and nothing, they just, it's all just a.
It's like walking for us, I guess.
Yeah.
It really is impressive.

Okay.
You'll never look at swarms of birds the same again.
They're not swarms of walks.
Come on now.

And finally, when all the easy sections are done, it's okay to take a break.

The people that I've known that are really into this, they're really into it, but just for themselves.
Like they're hard on themselves or maybe they shouldn't say hard on themselves.
They challenge themselves.

They're making this sound like this is some, like a tea, like a sports office.

And we have four puzzles.

Boy, that is a tall order.
You guys put a big task effort.
Kind of like that.
It's very funny, James.
You opened up this segment with, they might be giants.
I have, I'm a member of the instant fan club that they might be giants have and that you get a whole box of a bunch of stuff when you're in the instant fan club.
And one of them is a puzzle of their first album cover.
So now I got to break that out today and put that puzzle together.
Let's go.

It's a, I can't remember how many five.
I think it's a 500.
It's a puzzle.
That's so hard.
It's a lot better than when they did the last puzzle they sent out was of their album Flood,
which if people have seen the cover is like different shades of green, all green.
And that was a tough one.
That was a hard puzzle to put together.
Yeah.
I am going to show this list to my mom and try to gain some points back.

Speaking of all Hallows Eve, trick or treating in your neighborhood, people say that there are designated areas now.
The parents can go.

We talk about this.

I actually had a whole bunch of trick or treaters this year.

That's one thing I heard from a lot of parents at that time.
And I don't know if I brought it up or not.
But I think there's a thought right here that part of the reason it's fading is safety or concerns with that.
A lot of it has to do with the weather.
A lot of it has to do with parents just not wanting to be out in that weather or wanting their kids out in that weather.
I was encouraged by that.
Here, I thought my brain the way it works and everything immediately thought negative and everything.
And it's not so much that.
It's negative temperatures.

In the Midwest, we just prepare for that.
You buy a bigger costume so you can fit your snow suit under it.
It's just constant.

Mostly because of the horrible things that have happened because of people doing dumb things,
like starting forest fires or people dying.

Because that, I mean, that's what you're doing with these things when you make it about

Beauty pageants.
Now, this one is tricky.

First off, and I bring this up in part because of the Miss Wisconsin rabbits, pageants and
some of these.
I have no like world, like, nothing I understood about the pageant world.
But I did have a very feminist hippie mother.
And for me, growing up, this was something that, well, the Miss America pageants and these
things, they didn't seem like they were really like, you know, being very supportive of
women.
If anything, just putting them on a pedestal and, you know, all these nasty things.
Objectifying.
Objectifying.
Objectifying.
Objectifying.
Objectifying.
And on a local level, the Miss Wisconsin rabbits, pageant and some of these and everything,
their scholarships involved.
Yep.
Allyson Dairyland.
And you see these girls, the way they get together and every single one of them wants
to win.
But even more than that, wants the other person to win.
Yep.
They're bringing each other up.
They're teamwork that they're doing in a competition.
It's impressive.
So maybe the oldest thing that I remember my mother talking about when it comes to women's
suffragate or women's rights or any of these things is women supporting women.
And how there is not enough of that in society.
She said it in the 70s, she said it in the 80s, she said it in the 90s.
Keep talking.

This seems like something that, again, this isn't my wheelhouse, but it does seem like
that they have like, to says point, they have evolved it.

I wonder if the name can evolve too.

I don't even know if they call them beauty pageants anymore.
They just call them pageants as far as I know.
At least, well, I'm sure there's some that still do, but St. Patrick's Day.
Some people say it's become regional where it's still a major thing in some areas and

They do say them Northwest and Midwest, it's very big.
But it has just, it's just not going anywhere, sorry James, I just had to cut you off.

That's more niche, I think.

I don't think it's faded so much as it's become.
It's become more, you know, you can't detail.
You can't do it anymore because of the computers and cars.
You cannot work on cars the way you used to.
The mechanical part is, is a thing of the past.
Everything is run by computers.
I mean, even your local repair shop has a hard time these days because of the way cars
are made.
And they all look the same.
Yeah.
I mean, the fancy cars of anything prior to like 1980, you can't, they all look the same
after that.
And I'm sorry, but eventually metal degrades and it doesn't keep forever.
That's true.
This is eventually going to die out just because of there are, there are a few industries
I'm more disappointed in than the vehicle industry and the creates the lack of creativity.
And that being said, I have gotten a chance to work on a couple of classic muscle cars
and things like that.
Oh, it's so much fun.
I believe that we're totally believe it.
Going to car shows, oh my goodness, they're so, they're awesome and the work that people
do on them, I know a couple of restores that do this for, like just for fun, but they
could do it for money.
They're so fantastic.
We were talking about putting puzzles together earlier to me, like, you know, being
together an old engine.
Exactly.
This piece has to go right here and this piece, there's a few things to feel good better
than starting an engine.
