Can you imagine men and black with anybody instead of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones?
I can imagine without Will Smith not so much Tommy Lee Jones though
Yeah, he really nails it in that one. Well, it turns out nobody could because even Thor couldn't do it
Well, you know, they had the they had the re-imagined or they re-did the men and black thing a little bit with
Tessa Thompson and
And it didn't do well. It really didn't I didn't think it was a bad movie my dad liked it
But you know, I didn't it didn't do well box office. Why right right?
So we almost have some evidence of how this would work without those two pairings of Smith and Jones
They they really nailed that casting and those two really worked well together
They did so that's not worthy I think in this conversation because that wasn't always going to be the case
Mmm, it almost didn't happen
David Schwimmer was offered the role and was supposed to take the role to work alongside Tommy Lee Jones
Whoa, okay of all the names you were gonna throw out there
That's probably the least likely that I would have guessed didn't see that one good not see that one coming
David was offered the part first
But it turned it down because he only had a short break from friends and had already committed to directing his own movie
Oh, well that would do it the movie was a high school reunion comedy called since you've been gone
It was supposed to be a theatrical film but ended up premiering on ABC in 1998
David says it was it was a brutal decision
But he as that he had
Convinced to a bunch of friends and associates to do the movie and it if you'd scrapped it for men and black
Those friendships probably would have ended. Oh, wow
Quote you have to follow your gut if you look at the success of the film and the franchise my career would have taken a very different

I mean I don't blame him. I really don't need directing his first movie. Yeah, no, no

There's plenty of stories of famous stories of actors turning down roles
Will Smith has actually turned down some big parts. Yeah, sure
You know, there's been a lot of stories of that over the years
Will Smith was supposed he was offered the role. I believe Morpheus in the Matrix movies or I'm sorry
Will Smith I think was offered either that or neo one of the other yeah, right and he turned it down famously right
There's a couple of those that have happened
And on the other side of that counter reefs has turned down some role. It happens. It's the business really
It's actually to me
I look at this and maybe and I'm looking at this as somebody who has been fighting for a career for so long
But to me I almost look at this as a feather in the cap in some ways of you
You've got that kind of career. Mm-hmm where you you've turned down parts that are that you know
That you've had that opportunity even that that says David swimmer
Okay, his career is not where it was at the peak of what it was with friends, right? So for David swimmer
Maybe he can't say he was in men and black, but he was their first choice. Yeah, I mean you put that on a big enough name at that point
Yeah, and while that may not help you for your everyday job interview in this industry
It does it matters in this industry so while to many people out there that may not care about that and good the good on you for it
To casting directors to producers to directors. They know that story
So that does add to which I mean doesn't hurt certainly in as great as if he had done it
You're not saying that
We might have gotten a much bigger in terms of not necessarily in like money or anything like that
But in terms of like big movies David swimmer, you know
Yeah kind of thing instead of what he ended up doing so I don't know
I still would have taken the money from friends. Yeah, that was a lot of money
One of these days Seth and I on directors cut are gonna get into actors who have turned down roles
um
The famous role famously turned down roles like George raft and all of the roles that he turned down. Oh
He's got he could have been a Casablanca you could have been a possible list. Yeah, topical list him
This is pretty cool believe it or not Senate lives already at their 50th season
It premieres on the eight to 28th and their host will be Gene smart

Love it and I don't know if Gene smart is necessarily a household name, but you know who are from designing women
She has been in a bunch of recently big shows like hacks
Yeah, she was in sweet nomamama. She was in phrasier mayor of east town. She's been on that too. That's the other big show
Homeward bound of course that movie just want an Emmy, right? Yes. She just wanted an Emmy for the t-show hacks
She is she is right now at the top which is awesome to see for a woman of
Her age honestly I to see I love it. I absolutely love it. Yeah, it's so cool
She is and it's it's really cool to see where she is where everybody kind of had her when she first
Start on designing women right in the character that she played in the opposite of that now that she's yes exactly very happy for her
Yeah, and I bet you jelly rolls gonna have a good show on
October 5th you'll have comedian Nate Margazzi. I think it's his second time hosting cold play will be there
October 12th Ariana Grande with musical guest Stevie nicks her first time back since 1983 whoa
That's pretty cool. That is nice. I like that. I am more excited about this one October 19th
Michael Keaton hosting with musical guest Billy Eilish. Oh, okay. Oh, okay. Michael Keaton. Yeah. Yeah, that is actually a woman on that one
The musical guest too. That's a really cool show. Yeah, she's a great live act. She is real that I was actually had to because I heard a song from Billy Eilish
This is when she was first starting out and I said, okay, she's got a really cool unique voice
I'm curious of how that you know translates live
And then she showed up on center live and I was like, okay, let's check this out and see and it really like at the acoustics at 30 rock
It depends on who you listen to but for the most part not the greatest not always the greatest
It's it's an old train station sort of it's you know, it's not really when it's not what it could be acoustics wise
But I've heard a lot of people actually say they are great. So who knows?
But she sounds great on that stage. She her voice works really well on that stage. It's actually a perfect stage for acoustic
I've heard a lot of great acoustics acts over on that. Yeah, it does better with like that sort then the hard rock and
the more electric sound right? Yeah
And November 2nd John Mulaney a musical guest shaperone
Who's one of the biggest acts in the world right now? Never heard of a
I'm behind the times. So um, I think that this is going to be a pretty good list in and again 50 seasons
That's now will also celebrate its 50th anniversary with a three-hour premiere special on February 16th and 20 next year
In related news and live our Saturday night hits theaters October 11th
That's the movie about the show's first episode which premiered October 11th in 1975. Oh right with George Carlin as the host
Yeah, I um my my little sister just yesterday sent me a trailer for that for that movie
And I you know if you listen to me on the air here for more than five seconds, you know, I feel about center live
It's my dream job. Right um, it's uh, it's something that I've watched since I was a little kid
I've seen every single episode every minute of center live in all of their history
That I didn't know wow. That's a lot of TV
And and probably most things more than once. Oh wow that's saying this with pride. I just said I'm just owning it
It's your thing. Yeah, right. Um, I have almost zero interest in this movie
Really? Yeah, and I I couldn't I couldn't even tell you why I got no idea why I don't even know like I I was trying to explain to Jill
She's like, what are you talking about? This is your thing. I'm like, I don't know. I watched I watched um some of the trailer and and then I saw some of the casting and

I guess for me
It's a little bit like watching some of these right now one of the more popular things on Hulu and FX is
Taking a sports story and turning it into a TV movie. They did it with the Donald Sterling thing
And they're doing it currently with Aaron Hernandez
And I and those stories are very interesting to me and I remember living through them and seeing a movie about them
Does on paper seem interesting to me and then I see the actors portraying these people and I'm like ah
Nah, man, but oh you have to use your imagination
That's what you ask people to do all the time James. Yeah, I know and I've got a I've got an imagination that doesn't run out of ammunition man
Like it's insane and I can't do it like I can't for me personally
I can't seem to break that that wall of being able to look at these guys as oh, that's Jim Belushi
Oh, that's Chevy Chase the no name. No, I'm sorry
And this is different
This is a little bit different than playing Ronald Reagan or playing a former president or something like that an actor an actor president
Something like that a guy who had two careers is what I'm looking at here
um
If I'm I'm looking at okay, I need you to play John Belushi
You got to play John Belushi you got to be Belushi man and there's only one Belushi like that's I don't know
That's asking somebody to play this you know a Chevy Chase or any of these people. I understand this is acting 101
But I can't break it. I can't break through and see them as this person
I just see an actor trying to be this person. Yeah, and I think it's simply just you're so close to it
I'm too close. I think that's what it is. It's just such it's been such a big part of your life and your professional
aspirations and and all that stuff, so which is it's pretty lame actually
I don't know
Lame on my part. I don't know. You know if if they did if if this would be bizarre if they ever did a movie about the
Forming of mst3k. I'd be like what? Yeah, that would make it a little weird for me because it's my favorite show
I know so much about it, but yeah, I don't know who could play any of those people that would be weird man
That'd be very it would never make that movie. I know most rather them like have them play themselves just younger
Just you know like try to make themselves look younger. They can actually do something funny with it
They asked me, but yeah, they can have a lot of fun with that like we're now did with his movie. Yeah, absolutely

And and we wrap up our entertainment section with this one. I thought was kind of interesting stuff
Many Americans look for a maiden USA label on the products that they buy because they believe that they are more likely to have high quality items
Or they just want to support their country and everything right um, but that doesn't necessarily go for digital content
According to a recent study Americans are consuming over 50% more internationally produced TV shows and books
Then they were five years ago. Wow and a large chunk of that is young people
Overall roughly 48% of TV shows we watch are internationally sourced along with 46% of books
41% believe that that international content is higher quality than American made content and 38% say it's more original
Jim of course, it's more original. They they're gonna do different things than we're gonna do
They're saying the same thing about us. Yeah
Gen Zers 42% and Millennials 40% were more likely to favor international content over gen Xers
28% and boomers 21%
One reason for the change is the pro-lific
The foreign foreign titles and streaming services. Yeah, you've got so much more of this. Yep
Whether that's new content or licensed by saying Netflix
That's just more access to them now than there's it been five years ago. That's for sure true. Yes
singles for books some of the foreign foreign boost comes from manga graphic novels from Japan
That's where you're seeing a huge number of those. Oh, yeah, that's really exploded in the last few years
Yeah, um and and I've said for years I would I
There's the number one TV network or you know, I would want to work for BBC
Like I like right yeah now there's a lot of things I don't like about the BBC a lot of things
I don't like but oh my god the content they produce their entertainment arm is really good. Oh, they just a great stuff
Yeah, I can name 20 shows right and I couldn't name 20 shows. I can name three or four shows a bunch of shows
That would not only hold their own, but would win awards here in this country if it was straight up just the you know here
Right there. They really do great work on the BBC as far as I you know entertainment wise right right
Part of it I think has to do with the industry as it as it's constituted in the UK
You will see more bigger name actors do smaller projects like TV shows like that
Because they get they don't get paid nearly as much in Britain as they do over in the United States
Which is why a lot of British actors come over the United States because they get paid a lot more
But because of that they have to keep working constantly because they don't get paid as much
So they got to keep me like you say you got to keep the next job the next job next
And I think that has something to do with it is that the talent level is really high
Because of that I
I also think that there's there's a lot of this the grass is always greener on the other side
Oh, yeah, I think so because I guarantee you that if you go to Japan you go to London you go to any of these places
Some of the biggest that you're going to see somebody walking around with an American TV show t-shirt or American band
Or listening to an American song or talking about an American TV show or something like that like we all do this around the world
Oh, yeah, we're we're huge in other countries and we're not as huge in our own
Yeah, right. Well, and historically the United States movie industry has been international
A lot of the stuff that people got everywhere was from the United States
That's where a lot of filmmakers from other countries they saw you know a famous movie and they're like
We're inspired to become a filmmaker or something like that. I think some of it is it's just being shown back to us
Yeah, yeah through a different lens
I think that has something to do with it
It also has something to do with where we've had the most cultural cachet like the UK
Japan is good example very good example Japan who it doesn't very interesting job of showing us our culture back in a very interesting way
But you're not going to see quite as much as countries that you know that have been more isolated like you know
Like closed like Iran or something like that. Yeah, which has some amazing filmmakers
But you're not going to see as many of that over here because of their there's no cultural connection between them
Yeah, and us so it's interesting to the part of this article gives into how
Gen Zers and Millennials are more likely to watch content with subtitling right interesting
Very interested in that very they like that actually preferred and I think that goes along with the fact that most of them
We did as an article. I want to say almost a year ago about how many
Gen Zers and Millennials want to have subtitles on they they always have like constantly even for like English language movies
Yes, yeah, it's always on there and everything um and some of that is volume some of that is just uh
Honestly the one of the things that the movie and TV industries have not done very well as work is get sound better
It's great as they know with some things they have not adapted to say and and and not for nothing TVs
Like what happened to smart sound. Yeah, why doesn't every single TV that's built have smart sound
It's it's a ridiculous kind of thing that they that we do that we we had this technology
We should put it in every TV. It would make sense. It doesn't make any sense not to right um and
And that's one of those things that gets lost in the shuffle with a lot of the the cuts that they're making in the movie industry
Oh, I need to pay this. I need to pay that. I'm gonna you know shortchange the sound team. Oh, I'm gonna shortchange the special effects team
Dumbest decision you'd ever make really bad really really sound is so integral to film so oh my god
It's so important. Yeah, and and oftentimes we're missing some of that because of the RTVs or the headphones were listening to whatever it is
Especially if you have headphones that are specifically designed for bass you're probably missing a lot
They're great for those bass songs and everything, but if you're listening to your TV shows and everything on yeah
You're not here and everything right you might not be hearing sound effects that are happening
I've noticed this with headphones. Um, it's something that they really need to get back on again because they weren't always this bad sound
No, no one of the things that you could pride so important so important. Yes, we will get to our news break

I have changed at least off top my head 10 to 13 tires in my life
You know, I'm in my 40s. I've done a quite a few of those right um and and I marvel at the fact that we have not this not has has not changed
Nothing about it. I want to say it was 9 or 10 the first time my dad showed me how to do this and at it
I was about 39 40 probably the last time I changed a tire no different no different. This is not changed
It hasn't evolved and I and I don't have a problem with that necessarily
I just find it funny when we are so quick to advance things right here's something that hasn't there's not really much you
You know, I was watching you know a while ago an old Laurel and Hardy short
From like the late 1920s early 30s and they had to change a tire on a car
Guess what basically the same thing back then yeah, I mean seriously. It has not changed it 100 years
First on this list. There has to be a better way to package flower
Oh my gosh. Yeah
How would you do that? We have not figured this out. No
Like we just we there are certain things like
Idrops or or or contact lens solution that we just like yeah, we're just gonna spill a bunch of that
That we're just gonna waste a bunch of that and these actually the the saline company or whatever Johnson and Johnson
I believe there was got sued for this because they they have it in their their idrops that you
They release more than you want. Yeah, right? So you would have to buy more and they actually got in trouble for that. Yeah
Um, yeah, but this flower thing is hilarious to me because that that's one of those things it is
We have all noticed but nobody's just really you know made the logical flower

If you can figure out a better way to package flower and to sell you might make a few dollars
That's okay packaging and selling it is not so much. I think the problem
It's it's dispersing it. Yeah, and then or or oh using it you only need like half a bag of flower
With another half and everything you're just tying it up and hoping for life. Yeah, right right printers that can't

Even after you spend an arm and a leg on printing ink. Oh well
Well, yeah, we can throw something out there for that. I think that is something that we could take care of if we would
Get let keep stop printer companies from blackmailing us into using their ink. Yeah, and it would be a lot cheaper too

Handcuff our own printers even though we've bought and paid for them. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that's crazy
That's hard that is one of the biggest hustles going on. Oh my god right now. Yeah, yeah, it's yeah like yeah. Yeah

Being able to successfully clean the inside of a windshield

It's you can do it to the outside of the windshield. Can't do it inside. I gotta say I think that some of this I've always thought was just me

I well, you know what it was I enjoyed it. I thought it was it was fun. It was different and
It was a little nerve-wracking at first, but what you get into it, you know, well, we gotta get close
We got to give you guys more opportunities to do that. Yes, that's all that takes and there's an easy way for you to do that James
Yeah, just just to take a vacation. Oh, you met me. No
Oh, no, we're not doing that. Oh, yeah, yeah, definitely. Yeah, absolutely absolutely
So, uh, continuing continuing this list a little bit of off the top of my head
When you everybody almost everybody loses a remote
But what about the TV that doesn't have a power on button? Like there's some TVs out there that have no button
You got to you you have to have the remote. I know that seems insane to me. What are we doing? Why would you do that?
That's ridiculous
You can't you know say the powers off and then when you how you gonna watch TV if you got it you know
Shopping carts shopping carts that like if there is a a shopping cart that has a busted wheel on it
Take it out of rotation take it out of the rotation to be fair. I don't know how expensive
Uh shopping carts are so I don't know if they do that because that they really are expensive
I don't know. I couldn't tell you but I'm with you very very annoying very annoying
Um and using a keyboard screen a keyboard on a TV screen or something like anytime you have like a fake keyboard
Yeah, yeah, we're having to type in passwords on a TV with with those remotes with the remote
Yeah, like I've I've had to do this so much especially in the last couple of months
I've gotten better at it but even I get like just insanely frustrated and and it doesn't help you know
Because they a lot of them now have you know the voice recognition thing right so you do that
Try reading an email address. Oh god. Yeah, try doing that. That's not get you're gonna be I can't I think I've tried to do mine with my last name
That's what like most of my email addresses. I'm like yeah good luck
I have to correct it anyway
Like uh bacon bacon packaging that's that that could use some work
And and why do we not like why don't cereal like all the cereal companies should be working with the ziplock companies
And and just creating a a combination there of what we're wonderful world
We're our cereal bags and our box is actually working
Reheal and all is there anybody out there that actually thinks that closing the cereal box keeps it fresher
But no that's ridiculous. What's going through the motions? What's we are like why aren't they when is it ziplock got on that like
Ziplock and in the in Kellogg's at least if they combine forces how great would that be oh million dollar idea
Million dollar idea. Okay, so the initial
Serial that you buy is in some kind of container that can be resealed. Okay, like a like a like you know
I don't want to use more plastic, but you know kind of a plant maybe something
That you can use over and over again and then the refill is just in a bag. Ah you just pour it in there
That's something a refill set kind of thing, huh? Oh, I like that work. I don't know maybe we'll say like it's worth a try
It's worth a try run it up the flagpole
Just spit ball in here just blue sky and I love that

Oh, we haven't done an idiom showing a while have we no and I got and I got admitted here before break
So I'm gonna go ahead and look at
Because that that's an interesting one that I like that phrase. It's a fun one to say
The phrase run it up the flagpole originated in 1950s and 60s with advertising executives on Madison Avenue in New York City
It's a expression that means to test out a new idea or and we already know with that
But okay, so that's where it originated. Yes, interesting, but so just I guess you have it up a flagpole so everyone can see it
Is my guess is what that means? So let's show everybody and let's see what feedback we get it
It originally comes from the phrase run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it
First coin by Madison Avenue ad men. How about that? Huh?
So there's actually a second part to that saying
Okay, there you go interesting interesting you learn new things on the morning show here sure to everybody. We we

We're nothing you're not teachers. No, that's not fair
You also learn what not to do plenty of times lots. Yeah, I am one of your better examples of what not to do

I'm gonna have some fun doing it too. We got some good stuff coming up for getting to our schedule in a little bit
But right now I got a quick story to get in uh, we like to usually do our then a right stories right here
This is sort of a that a right story
According to a survey 62% of people are overwhelmed with access screens
And I'm worried about managing too many passwords accounts and logins
85% of people think it's worth it to some degree because they believe that they're more secure
And 64% feel confident in their cybersecurity knowledge
But over half admit to sharing their passwords with others and 40% admit to reusing passwords
24% right down their passwords and 19% keep them listed on a file on their computer
The most commonly shared passwords are of course streaming service ones right and 15% of people share other bank account
Passwords and pins
15% I wouldn't do that
Only 12% of people use a secure password manager which experts and cyber security agencies
Recommend yes, it is uh, it is the the best way to go. It is the most secure way. So yeah
Most browsers have basic features like that built-in but many of the premium services cost money especially
For you know some of the you know more higher up
Right. Yeah, yeah
But uh, this is one of those problems that we're gonna
We're not only we're not going to run into we have already run into yes
Absolutely and especially for younger for I mean for older people where
They may not realize some people like I've talked to my mom and dad about this and everything
They think that they have to write everything down and like well actually google can save your passwords for you
And it's very safe. Yes, and I thought oh that's a great way to do it too
But then what happens when that doesn't work and you can't log in and stuff
So they go back to the writing them down and I don't blame them for doing this
But I also know that that's not a great safe way of doing it either. No
No, there's there's a lot of um, there's a lot of gray area with this
Yeah, a lot of uh, we're trying to figure out the best ways to do this and there's no op there's no absolute way of course
There's we just can't be that's just the way that the internet works. We can't because it's an open internet
We've heard our whole lives
Basically you can do everything right walk around safe in your you go for a walk one day and a tree branch falls on your head
Yeah, right. I mean the randomness of life. Yeah, and it's no different than with our our passwords
Yeah, very much very true. Um, it's it's it's just about how you want to approach life
I realized when I was really young. I don't want to live my life afraid. Mm-hmm
I don't want to spend my life that way
So, you know, well, that's gotten me in trouble a lot in life
But I grew up and I got a little bit older a little smarter, but I but I still live that kid
I am still that person that doesn't want to live my life and fear and yeah when it comes to these things
I I don't just say come what may you know, my password is cat dog
You know, it's not that
But I also don't I don't get too worked up about these things
I do trust a lot of these security systems to do their job and when they can't I
I'm I have confidence in our judicial system or what have you to be able to make things right right and you do have to I mean
This is something that in I know what you're saying, but for a lot of it you're not 100% sure like every website
You don't know what their security is like so that's why you have to try to be as as careful as possible on all those things
And am I am I like no? No, I'm sure there's things that I'm not doing very well either in terms of cybersecurity, but it's
Like you said, it's not something that we can have complete control over anyway, and this isn't true
Because everybody has something that they they want including you're if you just have an identity
Then do you have something that they may want but um, I also look at this a little bit like well, it's just me
Like I know I'm not my account doesn't have a ton of family members on it or yeah, or you know my bank account
It's just me and I don't have anybody else that I'm you know, we're really
So I guess it's a little bit easier but it always has been a little bit easier for me on that regard
If you're like yeah, if I had a significant other if I had children and living with me or or something like that
It might be a very different story
The it increases exponentially because of the more people you have because there's just more chances for people to get in
Yeah, with me. It's like
I worry, but I mean I'm worried that much right
We had a new addition to our pet of the week. We each picked one today. We did we we
Set picked Willie Nelson. I did a wonderful domestic short hair who was four months old a very cool looking guy
Yeah, Laura picked Winfrey Winifred Sanderson a
Great name. I love that four month old wonderful short hair mix kitten those were great. So what about Pam?
