It's a new day.

Thanks for kicking it off of us right here at 97-5 FM, 13-20 AM, WFHR.

We are locally grown, radio, Terry and James hanging out with you.

Thanks so much for joining us, everybody.

We're going to have some fun this hour.

We're going to get into some United Way talk before we wrap up, along with our good stories

of the day and talking about our schedule for today.

Also a little bit later, we're going to get into some of the most useless things we have

memorized, Terry.

Most useless things we have memorized.

We've got some entertainment news to kick things off, but I always like to let the audience

look behind the curtain and be honest with them about everything.

And I am not a materialistic person by any means, and I am very careful with my money.

I haven't been very honest with the audience.

I work in radio.

I've spent 22 years in radio.

You don't make a great living necessarily when you first start in radio.

It took me a long time to get to where I am now, where I am getting a decent paycheck.

And I am benefited by it being in modern times where our economy runs better because of

a lot of the, what I look at as modern day layaway, like only better, the clarina things

and a lot of these payment plan things that you can do monthly payment plans on and stuff.

It's part of how our economy has survived is by having options like this for consumers.

Maybe I can't pay the full front right now, but over five, six months, I can pay this

off kind of thing.

And I am done a whole lot of that, but then a little bit of it for things that like gifts

for my parents or something like that.

And I told the audience I had a concussion this weekend.

And I did an impulse buy while I was healing from this concussion and it arrived yesterday.

And I don't know how to feel about it yet, because I'm a little, it's a lot of money,

but it's also something that I'm very excited about.

Terry, I ordered a PS5.

I have a PlayStation 5 and I turned, it showed up yesterday and I turned 15 again.

Okay.

Now hold on.

My, here's my, my mother, please, please, I need it.

And you finance this or you paid for it?

I paid for it, but it's over a monthly, so you finance it.

Yes, yes, yes.

You'd be dead if you lived in my house.

Yeah, I'm sure.

I'm sure.

You want crap like that?

You save the money and then you pay for it in full.

I hear you.

You are, you are echoing my mother and just, and every mother and my father just

shaken his head.

Not really any words.

Just shaking his head.

No, come on.

He's like, where's the other controller?

Let's be true.

Yeah, he wants to.

He definitely wants to.

But I was, I was up way too late last night doing that, especially with a deal with

a concussion.

And I do want to mention as well, I want to send a big shout out to VR, VR marketing,

because they are great.

They, oh, yesterday we had a team building thing that we did.

We're going to talk more about this on Friday's show with Melissa and Seth, but we had a lot

of fun yesterday over there as a team.

We got to do VR.

I've never done VR before.

It was really fun and exciting.

I thought it was interesting.

So we're looking forward to talking about that a little bit later too.

And this is some of these other video game kind of things that I've been doing and fun.

It's been fun.

I also realized that I completely regressed like overnight and complete it.

Like I did not want to come into work.

All I wanted to do was play and see a football see, I've got a dynasty going.

I, I, I totes the badgers.

I chose the badgers.

I've never played with the badgers before.

So I'm making, I'm making you all happy.

I'm making the university of Wisconsin great on my game.

Well, I'm glad.

Celine Dion can have that can do these kind of things because she's got that kind of money.

She did before the Olympics and she definitely will after.

Celine Dion will perform Friday during the Olympics opening ceremony and she's being

paid two million for one song.

Wow.

Man.

They're all, they're also footing the bill for travel and accommodations for Celine and

her family.

So not just her, but her and her family quote, they're paying a ton of money, ridiculous

amount.

She said, this, this will be Celine's first.

This will be her first performance since she stepped away from the stage back in 2022 after

being diagnosed with stiff person syndrome.

And speaking of celebrities at the Olympic Snoop Snoop Dogg is going to be heading the

Paris.

He's going to be carrying the Olympic torch.

I saw that last night.

Snoop, a big fan, appreciate you, appreciate the work.

And I think that his arc is one of the most unique arcs of an entertainer ever.

It's up there with Willie Nelson, man.

It's very odd.

It is very odd, very, very odd if you know the whole history of Snoop Dogg.

It's very odd.

Just don't use the torch to light anything else.

All right.

Just come on, man.

Just be smart about this.

Don't go put in the torch out or anything like that.

Enjoy yourself.

I, I, I, I, I, more, I'm never going to be like as an entertainer, as an athlete, whatever

you do.

And I don't care if you're a construction worker, get your money.

I'm not, I don't have any problem with that.

I don't blame her for taking the two million.

I always, always laugh at people to get mad at athletes for signing a, getting two million

for a signing bonus or something like you'd turn it down for just signing your name.

Like you would turn that down, but, but what bothers me a little bit is these athletes don't

get paid.

None of these athletes are making a single penny on any of this.

They're doing it out of pride of country and, and I love and respect that.

It's part of what I love about the Olympics, but it is, it is a little daunting when you

think about it.

So many of these other countries that don't, they don't even have two million to put into

their Olympics program, let alone something like this, the, the Olympics have a, this

is why I bring this up because I love the Olympics and I would hate to see it go away.

And every time the Olympics come out in the winter or the summer Olympics, I hear talking

heads on the, on the four letter network and some other places talking about, well, do

we still need to do this or should we keep doing this?

And when you have countries, in every country does this, every country, I'm not picking on

Paris.

Every country does this.

When you overspend and overspend and you build all these big buildings and what do we

see five, 10 years later, nothing, they're, they're not being used, nothing's happening

with them or anything.

And meanwhile, these other, these Olympic athletes continue to put time and money and energy

and blood and sweat into these things and, and, and truly get nothing for it, maybe advertisement

opportunities here and there, but that we're talking like three or four Olympians out

of thousands of Olympians.

I would like to see these games more celebrated, more appreciated, and I'd like to see these

athletes get some credit for what they're doing, i.e. N.I.L. with college athletes.

I'm a big believer in that.

I, I, I long gone are the days of, well, you got a scholarship.

That's worth it enough.

Okay.

Then, then, then the university doesn't get to make any money off of that player.

University doesn't get any money from that.

If the, if this is the deal we're making, where the athlete is getting a scholarship and

that's supposed to be good enough, which I'm not saying it isn't good, but it isn't,

it isn't enough compared to them selling a jersey in the, in the team store for 60 bucks

and selling 80 of them and the athlete getting nothing.

While, meanwhile, the university is continuing to make millions and millions and millions.

This is why we have N.I.L.

This is why we have this now.

And if you're upset with N.I.L., if you're upset with the way things are, blame the N.C.A.

Blame the people that could have gotten this straightened out decades ago.

They didn't have to wait until the last minute.

They waited until they got sued.

They waited until the chickens came home to roost.

And so they got nobody to blame but themselves.

Don't blame the athletes.

The athletes are trying to do what every single human being on this planet is trying to do.

Make a living at something they love to do.

That's not the wrong with that.

These Olympic athletes are very similar to me.

It should be a really nice to see her be able to play.

Oh, I think so.

We ended a lot this summer.

I'm going to be saying it a lot.

We're running game in Paris.

I am proud.

I'm very happy for her that she's getting to perform.

We don't know if this might be her last performance even too.

So that's something that's noteworthy.

Again, not a big Celine Dion fan but I respect her.

Respect that voice.

That's for sure.

I'm happy for her.

We go from one icon to another.

Whoopi Goldberg goat.

She is a winner of all the awards.

She's won everything.

Oscar's Grammy.

Well, what's she been up to lately?

Everything.

Whoopi Goldberg as I believe she's still on the view.

I'm not 100% sure.

Oh, I don't get it.

I couldn't tell you the last time I even heard about that show.

So I'm not sure.

But whoopi Goldberg did something with her mother's ashes

that was quite interesting.

So during it's a small world on the Disney ride, whoopi

led her ashes out into the water.

It was her favorite.

It was her tribute to her.

Whoopi was on late night with Seth Meyers last week

and said that she discreetly spread her mother's ashes

in the water while on it's a small world ride at Disneyland.

It wasn't a punishment.

It was a tribute to her.

She said, my mother loved Disneyland.

It was her favorite place.

Her favorite ride was it's a small world.

So she wanted to honor her.

Don't do this.

Don't do this.

Like, I don't know.

I don't know.

I don't know if there's statue of limitations on something

like this or whatever or anything.

And I empathize with her.

And I feel for her in the situation.

And I appreciate her honoring her mother.

But I don't know that you could really sanction this.

Well, I don't know.

I'm kind of like, what's the difference?

Well, to me, yes, yes to me.

I'm guessing it was not the whole urn.

I'm guessing it was just a small amount,

you know, a little vileful or a containerful.

I don't know.

It's not like you're swimming in that ride.

And even if you were in ashes.

And if you're Disney, what can you do here?

I mean, you're not going to go getting,

you've been barking at somebody for, no, no.

She's, I mean, this and she can't be the first.

Yeah, that's a very good point.

And I think probably a lot of stuff gets in that water.

Yeah.

This is probably low on the concern.

I've never even been anywhere near Disney World

or Disneyland or any of those things.

But even I know that there's a lot of stuff

that goes out of those parks.

But everything is like very clean.

Like very, very clean.

So, so I don't, you know what I mean?

Like I don't know.

I don't know if it's an issue.

I mean, I don't think they want people coming with,

can you just see like people coming with the whole thing?

Yeah, they get the whole little word.

Yeah, yeah.

Had a big dad.

My dad was big.

He's a big.

It was like Mount St. Helen when they dumped it.

Now can you use that as a placeholder for your ride?

Those lands are really long.

That was, that was not kosher, I shouldn't have said that.

Katie Perry has entered her, the irrelevant era, it seems.

Her new single, Woman's World, failed to make the top 40.

It debuted at 63 on the Hot 100.

It's also only spent one day on Spotify's US chart

at 110 before it disappeared.

And a lot of people are not, a lot of people

are slamming the song.

I really, in part because of the guy that

wrote it and some of the, the history with him

and how he has treated people.

But this goes back to the Jennifer Lopez conversation

we were having and part of the reason I'm saying this.

Katie's new album, 143 drops on September 20th.

Usually this is, these opening singles

are the best songs on the album

and they're gonna lead up to a good selling album.

This could not have gone more opposite for her.

Now Jennifer Lopez, I would say her last big hit

was probably in the early arts.

So I mean, that's quite a while ago and everything,

especially in music and pop culture and everything.

Katie Perry has been in the public eye, not stopped.

She isn't gone anywhere for her to not be able to hit.

I think that it kind of speaks to something

that we don't see as much anymore,

but maybe we're gonna see more of

of people being a little more picky with their music.

And not just, cause this song is supposed to be

a woman empowerment song and it is not.

I mean, you hear the lyrics and everything

and it was written by a guy and you can tell.

You can tell and so people, like you can't just,

hey, women empowerment is really big right now.

I'm gonna do a women empowerment song.

Like no, you can't just get away with that.

You got to really actually mean it

and it might actually help to have a woman write the song.

I mean, there's a lot wrong with this.

Yeah, yeah, it's just, I find it interesting

that pop artists can't just throw anything out there anymore.

You know that's true.

Well, when you were saying, I mean, I get it

if it doesn't hit really high on the billboard chart,

but when you said, like it didn't do anything on Spotify,

that's interesting to me, right?

Because usually whoever you're following is

whether it hits high on the chart or not,

they still are supporting you.

But yeah, clearly, clearly not so much.

She maybe needs to go back to the drawing board, huh?

Maybe she needs to be, I know she's been a,

I believe that she has been a judge on American Idol.

Maybe she needs to be a contestant.

Maybe she needs to maybe get back over there, I don't know.

You've heard of Christmas in July,

so why not other holidays?

Reena's Reese's peanut butter pumpkins

have arrived a full three months before Halloween.

It's the earliest Hershey has ever put them out there,

but you won't see them in stores just yet.

It's a limited release thing for people who prefer them

over normal Reese's cups.

The chocolate to peanut butter ratio

is different, apparently.

It is.

Yeah, I guess another thing about it.

Yeah, I could see that.

They're selling 32 ounce bags on Hershey's website

for 25 bucks, and they're shipping through the mail.

They won't be available in stores for another six weeks or so.

Hershey's is in the middle of a big class action lawsuit

over the pumpkin right now.

In May, four people sued in federal court

accusing them of misleading customers

because the pumpkins don't really have faces.

Okay.

People are stupid.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, they are.

Yeah, there's no getting around that.

I'm on.

Our court systems are so bogged down.

Oh, because it's a pumpkin, not a jack of lantern.

They promote it as a pumpkin.

Get over it.

Even if they're packaging shows faces.

Are you serious?

Our judicial system is built to protect people from things

and to help you to do things right.

This is this just bogs it down.

Well, okay, they're individually wrapped.

So it's not like you're unwrapping them and displaying them.

Yeah.

You're unwrapping it and putting it in your mouth.

Yeah, I mean, just, just any, that ain't right.

I would love to be able to.

This is a that ain't right.

Yes, yes, that is definitely a,

the packaging shows them as jack of lanterns,

but they're blank chocolate on top.

The people behind the suit claimed

that they were very disappointed,

and they're seeking five million in damages.

I wouldn't give them five cents.

I wouldn't even, in fact, they owe us.

They owe us money now.

And they're, and they're so traumatized.

Yes, these poor people, these poor things.

Yeah, get over it.

But, go back to DoorDash scamming.

Yeah.

Now, I will say if you want to go to Yelp,

if you want to go review this and mention it or something,

that's your, as a consumer, that's your right.

You go right ahead.

I would like to see more people, you know,

taking as much energy to leave good comments as bad,

but teach their own.

But as far as like bogging up our court systems

and everything was stuff like this,

this is, I mean, this been going on since we were kids.

But on a technicality, they are pumpkins.

They're not jackal lanterns.

They're not jackal lanterns.

They're not called jackal lanterns.

They're not, they're not.

I don't even know how this got even into the court process.

Carves your own darn face in it.

Yeah.

Take it out of the package, get a pairing knife,

and carve the heck out of it.

That is definitely a, that a right part of the story.

But we're talking about the ratio before.

I think it's different.

There's more peanut butter.

You're right, right about this.

Cause I, to me, I think, I don't know what it is,

but I don't like peanut butter and chocolate together,

except in Reese's.

I think Reese's has the perfect ratio of chocolate

and peanut butter.

So like a regular good old fashioned Reese's,

I love, or the Reese's piece.

And I think there's more in a regular Reese's.

There's more chocolate because of the, you know,

the little cup that it's in.

So it's like that corrugated kind of edge.

And that's all chocolate with the pumpkins,

not jack-o-lanterns, the pumpkins,

like the chocolate is just smooth over the peanut butter.

So I think, I think there's less chocolate more peanut butter.

I don't know, same with the little Christmas trees

that they do.

Those have more peanut butter than chocolate.

But yeah, I don't know.

There's something about those, you know,

just a regular old Reese's.

Yeah, that's something good about them too.

There's something, just, yeah, they hit the marker.

You know, I kind of hope that this judge

just kind of laughs them out.

I would love to see that, right?

Just, I would love to see more of that.

Like, are you serious?

Yeah, you can't, you can't be, like, don't know.

You're wasting our time.

We got actual court cases.

Well, it's kind of like when, you know,

let's say a food place is selling a burger.

And they have it on a billboard.

They have it on their menu or whatever.

Well, of course, that is prepared

and then airbrushed and touched up and photoshopped

because, oh, if you don't know.

When does a burger ever look like that?

Yeah, if you are under the age of 10

and you don't know this, I get it.

If you are over the age of 10,

you've got to know this stuff by now.

It's, this isn't new.

I don't know.

I didn't want to take a moment to talk about this, Terry.

Do you ever feel like your brain is at full capacity?

Your bandwidth is done.

You are a complete bandwidth.

And you wish you could forget the random junk

that seems to be taking up place in your head.

There is a list on the internet of, quote,

the most useless things that people have memorized

over their lifetimes.

And chances are you can relate to a number of these.

You know, I can remember my high school locker combination.

Oh, wow.

And you know what's funny about that?

Is the same lockers are still there?

And obviously, so it drives my kids insane.

Like not anymore, but like when you'd go,

you know, you'd take them for their little walk thing.

And I think there's whatever there is.

Four combinations for each one or five.

So every year they change it.

So it's got to pop back up at some point.

Like I should be able to pop that locker open

at some point in time.

That's hilarious.

You mentioned phone number earlier.

That you certainly, from the pop song, what's her name?

Jenny, Jenny.

Jenny, yeah.

That song, I think phone numbers are a common one for people.

My brain is half of this.

My brain is full of half of useless information.

First off, sports stats.

Like my brain, my bandwidth is clearly taking,

where I should know math or certain other things.

No, I could tell you who won the World Series

and back in 1983.

Like things like that are taking up my brain.

And there is also, I have a love of learning.

I love knowledge.

I like to learn.

I like to learn new things almost every day.

You're not always learning though.

Like really, like the beauties of the universe.

Sometimes you're learning things like lethologica.

Say by know what lethologica means.

Lethologica is the word for when you have something

on the tip of your tongue

and you can't think of what it is.

Why do I need to know that?

Why is that stuck in my brain?

Do you remember your first landline telephone number?

Oh.

Like your parent, like what you learned as a kid,

like if you have to call your mom or dad,

this is where you call?

424, 1525.

I was just 435, 375.

Yeah, it's crazy.

How those stay in our heads?

It is.

Looking at this list, number one on there

is old phone numbers from your childhood

that don't exist anymore.

That's number one.

Also on there, old friends birthdays, like from high school,

one person said it's really annoying

and look at the calendar.

I'm like, oh, today is so-and-so's birthday.

I haven't spoke to them in 10 years.

Ha, ha, ha.

Terry, number three on the list.

Old blocker.

Oh, yeah.

I don't know why.

That's awesome.

Your old classroom seating chart.

Ah, sort of, I guess.

I mean, one year, because they,

I think it was our sophomore year.

So our first year at Lincoln,

they, the teachers for whatever reason

that in Santa, everybody alphabetical to start with,

I had five of my seven classes with the same dude.

And we sat next to each other at every single one.

Because my last name was A, his last name was B,

and it was hilarious.

And we got to be good friends

and now when I see him we'll still,

I mean, we're not like in touch,

but we'll chat when we see each other and stuff.

And so it is funny, but that, otherwise I can honestly say,

I probably never would have gotten to know that person.

So that's all I really remember about seating charts.

I remember that with lockers.

I had a, um, a barb, a alloy, I had Ryan Marks.

And I think, um,

uh, man, who's always right by me too in lockers,

but from East all the way to Lincoln,

we always had our lockers next to each other.

And I don't know why I still remember that one.

32, 34, 48.

So she said, she's, that's crazy.

Uh, your first Wi-Fi password you had,

even back when they were a string of random letters and numbers.

I don't know how you remember that one,

but I could see that.

The alphabet backwards.

Yeah, because yeah, that, that could see that.

Oh, yeah, I could see that.

Or Mary had a little lamb.

Or chocolate or something.

It's already terrible.

Man, yeah, I'm telling you,

there was something about playing those though.

I enjoyed it, actually.

I think I'm the only kid in the world

that ever enjoyed playing them.

I always wanted to play an instrument.

And up into that point,

when I was that young,

I didn't think we could afford to rent an instrument.

So those were quarters of the closes.

I was getting the same thing.

We went on a field trip in sixth grade

to the Madison capital,

and I'm a sucker for capitals.

I think they're kind of cool.

Is it that in fourth grade?

Oh, maybe it was like in fifth grade.

that I could like belt out for you.

Theme songs are really, they really stick in the brain.

And for older folks, the Gilligan's Island theme song.

That's another one that does almost any theme song.

How about the Macarena knowing, not just the song,

but knowing the dance still.

Well, how could you forget it?

It's stuck in a lot of people's heads.

Lines from old plays and literature, yeah.

The spell to summon Captain Planet.

It's for a lot of younger people, I think.

This is a great one right here.

The codes for special moves or cheat codes in video games.

I will say this to all my old NES fans and Nintendo players

and everything up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right,

A, B, start.

See, isn't that funny?

It's crazy.

It's just there.

I have not used that code since I was probably

13 or 10 or something.

And yeah, it's so stuck.

So to that point, how did you find out about the codes?

I loved to know, that's such a good question.

Nowadays, I just Google it or whatever.

Yeah, but back then, someone had to tell you.

Somebody found that code out and spread the word.

It went across, like, just across everything in the mirror.

And how super fun is that?

It's awesome.

They had probably had to play telephone to do it, right?

Enable the calling tree.

Like, I'll tell you, and then you call the next person.

It's such a good question though.

I would love to know, yeah, where that came from.

The rules of the game of tag.

Yeah, that's just being a kid though.

I don't know.

And it's not like they're deep rules or anything.

It's like there's two rules to the game of tag, right?

A bit of old advertising jingles.

They're just annoying.

Like, you know, like that kind of stuff.

The McDonald's ads, two beef patty, special sauce,

lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and sesame seed bone, yeah.

The 1-800 cars for kids at those ads.

There are certainly some that stick.

So what's the biggest nuisance of all of these?

That's another good question from that.

I think it's more so when a song gets stuck in my head.

See, and I think it's like just the random, like if it's rules for something, if it's

how to do something, like to me at some point that's useful, but I think what it's just

literally something so random.

Yes.

Yeah.

That's why to me, it's that one that's song pops in your head.

It's not even a song you like, because of pop culture you know it, and it just gets stuck

in your head.

And before you know it, you're bobbing your head to macaramia, like I don't even like

that song.

That kind of thing.

Jingles are really, Jingles are one of those things that gets stuck in your head real

quick, too.

But that's good marketing.

Oh, yeah.

I mean, is that why you stand up and do the macaramies that are on some while?

Just exercise.

Just trying to, you know, get some stretching in.

The electric slide is next.

All the old dance moves.

Here it comes.

The chicken.

The hokey pokey.

The hokey pokey on roller skates.

That's we're just in the old stomping grounds of that over there.

But I think I got a good one right here to wrap up with Terry.

The five most common mistakes new drivers make.

Here are the mistakes they seem to most often make.

And hopefully we can help some people out there.

Even some all veteran drivers, you know, we refresh.

We've become lacks in their skills, right?

Not paying close enough attention in traffic.

Like not looking at what's up ahead of the highway and they tend to have tunnel vision.

So they don't glance left or right when they go through intersections.

Isn't that just driving in general?

Yeah.

Like you should, you know what I mean?

Like to me that's not a specific thing.

You should be paying attention all the time.

And all of us are susceptible to that.

Oh yeah.

Not checking blind spots.

Even with all the sensors and cameras that cars have now,

you should still be glancing over your shoulder before you change lanes, merge or back up.

Except I think new drivers probably aren't driving the cars that have this technology.

So you need to look.

There's still plenty of vehicles out there.

I would say overwhelmingly the majority of vehicles out there do not have some of those things.

So yeah, keep an eye on those blind spots.

Especially new drivers.

Yeah.

Rolling through stop signs.

You're supposed to stop before the white line on the road.

Let me repeat that.

You're supposed to stop before the white line on the road.

Then inch forward if you can't see.

New drivers tend to stop after the line because it's what their parents do.

So again, just a reminder that kids are sponges and they're learning from us.

If you want them to be good drivers, you got to be a good driver.

I love it.

Tailgating.

New drivers don't have a great sense of how long it takes to stop.

You're supposed to leave at least three seconds of space between you and the car in front of you.

Even more if you're on the highway or it's raining or there.

I would say motorcycles are one of the ones that I very adamant about.

Give more than three seconds.

Give four or five.

Maybe even ten.
