Good morning, Wisconsin. Good morning, world. It's a new day. Thanks for kicking it off
with us right here at 97-5 FM 13-20 AM WFHR. We are locally grown radio. Got your host,
James J. I am joined by Melissa Kay. Good morning. And the best listeners and radio. Thanks
for joining us, everybody. We've got fun things lined up for you in this hour. We're going
to get in some entertainment news, some good stories of the day. We're getting some local
stuff as well. But right now, we're going to kick off our 9 o'clock hour with new, hard
of Wisconsin Chamber members. We have our friends from Edge, VR, Arcade, and Gamers lounge
right here in Wisconsin Rapids. Want to introduce to you Tom V. Trone. Tom, good to see you.
Good to see you. Thanks for having us. Thanks for being here. And your manager, Christy.
Christy, thanks for being here. Hey, we're so excited to be here. Thanks for having us.
Melissa, I didn't mix them up. I'm so proud of myself right now. I didn't mix them up.
I didn't. Thank you both so much for being here today. I want to talk a little bit about
what VR Arcade and Gamers lounge is, where you're located and type of types of things you
guys offer. Let's start right there. If I see this, I see the sign, what am I going to
see? And what am I going to, what am I going to experience with your guys? This great
company.
Okay. Yeah. So we offer multiple virtual reality stations. And one of the cool features
about ours is, so we'll have eight stations to start with. And you can actually have eight
people all at the same time interacting in virtual reality. So you can play like a virtual
laser tag with eight other people actually interacting in virtual reality. Oh, cool.
And we will also have a race car simulator. And we have a large party room with some really
cool glowing walls. And we have a game room, which is eight Xboxes and eight TVs for
any of the people that come in to enjoy. Sounds like a dream to me. Sounds like a dream
to me. Sounds amazing. It sounds amazing. And it sounds like also another fun option for
kids, especially this time of year. Is that what you guys have found, Christy? Yeah.
We really wanted to have a family-friendly environment, which is safe for our kids to
come, our youth, adults. And we have parties. We're going to have parties so they can have
different packages. We'll have different VR quantities. They'll have the gaming room
with the Xbox as well as the party room in the back with the cool glowing walls.
Yeah, I've really, really got to check out this room. That sounds awesome. It seems
like something that is such a great option this time of year two that's nothing against
the normal options or things that parents might take their kids to. But I've read this
about kids. And from my own, I even asked, they get bored easy. And it's nice to be able
to change things up to offer kids something a little bit different. And that is something
that you guys are doing. Is that part of the reason that you got into this particular
industry? I'll ask both of you this question. Time on to start with you. Is that part
of what brought you to this industry? Yes. So actually, I have three grandchildren and
they come in every year for Tennessee. And when they're with us, we have to either go
to the Dells or go to Green Bay or Appleton or somewhere far away to go do something
fun with them. And back in 2020, I was, I've been thinking about it and thinking about
it. And we, we took the grandkids to a virtual reality station in Knoxville, Tennessee, by
where they live. And I'm like, all right, that's it. We have to do this in Wisconsin Rapids.
And I thought it'd just be cool to have something locally where families, friends can come
to a positive environment. And Christie, for you, being a manager and
getting into a field like this, is this, is that something that you're looking for?
Some of the things Tom was saying there and some of what we've already kind of touched
out. Yeah, for sure. You know, I'm a mom of five. So I have two boys who are, you know,
three third grade and going into fifth grade. And I'd actually stopped in because I was
looking to, you know, have a birthday party. And so I just happened to walk in and, and
you know, they were looking for someone. And I was so excited that we're bringing this
to our community. Another option is for, you know, my boys, my, my, their friends, just
another opportunity, you know, to learn and have fun. And I know that's my one son, like
this is him. He's a gamer. He loves to game. So it really is something exciting for
these kids, you know, and that's why I joined the team. You know, I was able to talk to them
and really having a wholesome environment is what we're looking for for these kids. So
safe online.
Christie, I had here your manager. I didn't have that you're a warrior. Mother of five, you're
impressive. You are an impressive human being. When it comes to not only the options for
kids, but the types of options, you mentioned that the different things that are available
for them. And while a lot of it is gaming VR, there's something else that happens here
with kids and you get them together. They interact. They get to know each other. They make
new friends. They run into people that have like things that they like as well. And when
you don't have that many things like this particular, what you guys offer in an area
like this, really around this area, not just here in rap, it's been really around this
area, all of a sudden you take your kid, because like you said, Christie, your son loves
gaming. You take him to something like this and he runs into other kids that are in the
gaming. And they make friends. And unlike when we were kids, these guys can actually talk
nowadays more and everything. It's cool. It's more opportunities for kids to meet other
kids with likenesses. And I think that that's a huge like selling point to not only parents,
but to these kids, I'd imagine. Yeah. Yeah, I definitely agree. And it's going to be neat
because we will have lots of different options for kids that are really into gaming or kids
that just like to get together with other kids and have fun. So one of the misconceptions
is that in order to come to a place like this, you have to be a full gamer and know everything
about everything when it comes to gaming. And this is actually fun for anybody of any age
and any ability. It doesn't matter if you're physically impaired or whatever. You can still
come and enjoy virtual reality. I know I have some elder people that have tried out the VR
already and they absolutely love it. You know, you can do it standing up, sitting down. I mean,
you can get us active or non-active as you want. Well, you're doing it as well. Just neat.
Can I ask, what's the range of games that you have in virtual reality? Because that's another
thing like people can't not all of us can afford a virtual reality setup at home. So this is
something really neat that you offer. I should mention that's a great question. I should mention
that Melissa and I are both looking for a VR organ trail. We're still hoping for that. We're still
hoping for that. Where is Carmen's Indiana? Yes, yes. It's a great question. What kind of range of
games are there for this? So actually, we have hundreds of games to choose from. So we have a
license deal with some companies where we can access many, many games. And we can also limit it
to age-appropriate games for kids that are younger. We can put it where they're not going to be playing
first-person shooter games and things like that. So that's kind of a neat features. You can play
whatever kind of game you want and just look through the whole library. Wow. And I can imagine
that hearing that, if you're a parent out there, immediately gave relief. Immediately to something
like that. That's a really insightful, smart thing to think about going into something like this.
And it speaks to not only good parenting, but just looking out for others and caring about kids
and everything. I don't know that that's something that would have popped in my mind right away.
So I think that that's an important factor for parents in this day and age. And man,
as much as in this area, we had the gold mine and we had some arcades and stuff around. And I
loved those places growing up. But again, you'd go there with your friends and you're playing
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles like four weeks in a row and eventually you get a little bored in
everything. You can't get past level seven. You could never get past the swim level, Melissa. I
could never get past the swim. There's always a swim level at every game. One of the things that we
have an advantage of nowadays is you want a different game. You download it. You just you're
being just pull it from the the cloud of the sky or anything like that. It's pretty unique and
cool to be able to offer that in this day and age. And with doing the licensing, we don't even
actually have to download it. We just click on it. And however long they play it is however long
they want to play it. And then if they don't, as a matter of fact, so say if you book an hour,
you can play 20 different games, you know, you could start a game and be like, I'm not really
into this one. I want to try a different game. Oh my goodness. That was going to be my next question.
Like this isn't you don't have to plug quarters into this, right? Correct.
Correct. It's a great question. Plus, if you if you can't tell, I mean, I was saving up.
I got a jar of started in the kitchen. If you can't tell, you have two members already.
You definitely have two people that are going to be showing up. As a matter of fact, we'll meet
you guys in there. We two over there. The show can run itself. The audience will take over.
The audience can take care of this. Pull it out of the cloud. Yeah, exactly. Where's AI when
you need it? Did you guys have anything else you wanted to touch on before we let you go?
Mention the address and how to get a touch with you, of course. But was there anything else
you wanted to mention? Yeah, I would say we have our ribbon cutting ceremony this Friday and then
our grand opening is going to be on Saturday. So we're super excited to have everybody come out.
You know, we're just we're we know this is going to be amazing for our community and we're
super excited for it. What time is the ribbon cutting? Three o'clock. Yeah, but it's at three o'clock.
Excellent. Awesome. Have you guys ever done a ribbon cutting before? No, it's fun. It's fun.
It is fun. It's fun. We look forward to seeing that, looking forward to talking with you guys
again. You did too good of a job. You're going to have to come back. We'd love to have you back
on some time and not only that, but thank you for supporting our area, bringing something like
this unique and fun to our area for our kids, our families. Appreciate the work you guys are doing.
Well, thank you. Thank you. I do just want to add real quick. So we will also be offering
pizzas for sale. We'll be having portesi pizzas and then you know, soda and water and things
like that. And we will have some urge for sale as well. So we're excited about that. Very cool.
And then like we'd mentioned, the birthday party packages will be a big thing.
One further question if that's all right, James. Yes, please. How do you can you buy like
membership? Do you just pay by the minute by the hour? How does that work?
So as of right now, you would make a reservation online for either a half hour or one hour
increments. And then you just come in and we will accept walk-ins as well. So you can just come
in and as long as we're not booked up, then you can come in for as long as you want.
And you can see online too, like what openings there are to book. And for parties,
right now we're going to have you call in. That's how we're going to do it. So then we can make
sure we get those parties perfect. Excellent. And what hours are you open?
So as of right now, we're going to be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. till 10 p.m.
Saturday will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. And then Sunday will be from 1 p.m. till 6 p.m.
And then we are we are open to if somebody wanted to have say a birthday party or any kind of
a party on a Monday or Tuesday, we would be opened to opening for that. So a private party.
Very cool. And then keep your eyes and ears out for our mobile unit. You know, we're working
on having a mobile unit to be able to go to different events. So, you know, we're lunch by the river.
I mean, oh, here to you guys when you have a bachelor. I was just going to say we got a perfect
place for your party. Yeah, exactly. Oh, you were thinking the same thing I was Melissa. Yeah,
we've got a open house thing we're planning for the summer and everything. I think you guys
are going to be invited. Yeah, we would love to be here. It went that way in several quick. So
we're going to have multiple mobile stations for the VR, but we're also working it out to try
to have the race car simulator mobile as well. Oh, my goodness. I want to say that's so bad.
There's nothing like those kind of games on the yard. Oh, they're amazing. Oh, that's awesome.
Visit them at 3540. Plover Road. It was constant. Rapids. Keep in mind, you can give the
gang at edge VR Arcade and Gamers Lounge a call at 715 4516891. That's 4516891. And be
on the lookout for more from these guys. And we'll be hearing from them again real soon. You guys
will be joining us again real soon. Thank you. What's the website? It's edge VR Arcade
WR on Facebook. Yeah. So we are we are partnered with another edge VR Arcade out of Green Bay.
And right now we are sharing the same website. So if you go onto their website in your book time,
you would just click on the Wisconsin Rabbits location. Oh, good to note edge VR Arcade.com is the
website. You should check that out. And as Tom mentioned, be sure to follow them on Facebook. It's
a great follow great way to keep up to date and all the things that they are up to. I think you
again, both for the time. Appreciate you. Thank you. Well, listen, I'll be back more fun on the
morning show here at WFHR locally grown radio. Welcome back everybody. Morning show here
at WFHR locally grown radio. Melissa and James here with you. We hope you're having a fantastic
Tuesday out there. Thanks so much for joining us. Little Chuck Berry to play us in talking about
school days. It got me thinking I had to play that because the gang that we just had in a big
shout out to edge VR Arcade and gamers lounge and Wisconsin Rabbits. Tom and Christie joining us.
They're fantastic. Oh, yeah. And just so you know, it's edge VR Arcade W.R. Dot is their Facebook
page. I just found it. Be sure to like that page. Keep up the date on all the things that they are
doing. It was interesting talking with them. We are so focused. I got so focused on talking about
the kids. I didn't think about, you know, they were mentioning that they are open for, you know,
bachelor parties or adult birthday parties, two and stuff. So, you know, I'll be perfectly
honest, James. I wasn't thinking about the kids at all. I was thinking about myself. Yeah, yeah.
And I don't blame you. Somebody needs to think about us. Somebody. And I appreciate you doing that.
No, I'm so excited. One of the, you know, I got to do VR a little bit at my brothers because
my brother has one. And one of the coolest things that I you're able to do with VR is an experience.
I was able to climb Mount Everest. Yeah, that's the, the, with VR. And look out across the,
just the vista of being on top of Mount Everest, it was such a surreal and cool experience.
Because I'm sorry, I'm never going to climb Mount Everest. Being able to experience it in VR
was so awesome. Yeah, I think that one of the original first things I ever saw in VR was something
like that. And immediately was like, I have to try that. I'm with you. I love mountain climbing.
I like the idea of it and everything. I never climb Mount Everest. Did they build an elevator?
No, okay, but I'm probably not going to do it. Escalator? Yeah, something, something. But, you know,
otherwise, this is as close as we get for some of us as these kind of things. And whatever you,
you're imagining of VR, it has evolved so much. It's incredible what they do now.
And the fact that you can do it sitting standing, you know, whatever your ability level is just
really neat that they are able to cater to all abilities and ages. I learned something about myself
recently, Melissa. I've always been very thankful and proud that I'm not a name brand guy.
I don't need the highest end of something. I don't have to run out and get the brand new phone
as soon as it comes out. But I do have something that I am a bit, a bit bad about this whole 4K,
5K, 12K stuff, the graphics and everything nowadays that TVs are producing. I, I, I love it.
I can't tell you how much I love it. And anything like take a YouTube video, you know,
nowadays you can kind of switch the speed. If you want to use the 1080 or K or whatever,
or you can go to use the old 720 or 240, you know, speed bits. And you, and you go ahead and you
start on like the 1040 K or something. It's like, oh my gosh, I can see the sweat on the brown
and that kind of thing. And then you go and switch to 720. And it's like, what am I a caveman?
What, what is this? What is this? Vegan Greek to me, Jans, I have no idea what you're talking
about. I'm so spoiled with the way that the speed rate and the graphics are nowadays with video
and with VR and so much of this. It makes you feel like you truly are there. They've always said that.
But in this day and age, it really does feel that way. It's amazing.
The only thing I can think of when you're talking about speed is the fact that I can speed up
my audio books when I'm listening to them or slow them down. That's, that's where my brain went.
You and my sister, you both do that and I can't do it. Everybody sounds like the chipmunks to me.
I can't do it. You can do that on YouTube as well. Oh, cool. But just just to finish up the
edge VR, they have the ribbon cutting on Friday at three, but their grand opening is Saturday at three.
Yeah. And be sure to be there everybody and support local. We appreciate our friends over there.
They'll be joining us again. I am so excited about this. They'll be definitely joining us again.
They really like the idea of the open house and showing up here. That was pretty cool.
With a mobile unit. Yeah, that'd be great. Diving into some other entertainment news.
Horror will have its day or days in 2025 because John Carpenter and Robert England will both get
stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. John Carpenter, one of the godfathers of horror, writer,
director of so many horror and sci-fi classics. Halloween, the fog, the thing, escape from New York.
They live, prints of darkness, but they don't mention big trouble in little China. That's the classic.
That's the one. That man deserved the star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame for that movie alone.
And of course, Robert England made a career of playing Freddie Krueger in all the Nightmare on
Elm Street movies, except for the 2010 remake. So they're going to be getting these stars.
And they're also getting stars next year. Very, like, should have happened a long time ago, Prince,
Jane Fonda, Jessica Shastine, Colin Farrell, Emilio Estevez, Neil Long,
Fran Drescher, Laura Graham, Bill Nye, Sherry Shepard, South Park creators,
Tray Parker and Matt Stone, DePesh Mode, V-52's Green Day, George Strait, Keith Urban, all will have stars
this year. That's a lot of stars. But there's something to mention here, I think, that is noteworthy.
One, Bill Nye getting one, that is really... I was just going to say that. You said Bill Nye and
I stopped listening. That's so cool. Congratulations to him. That's very deserving.
You look at the work that he has done educating kids, educating us and everything. He's put his
career in trouble at times just to be able to get the truth out there and to get facts out there.
To make science palatable for all of us. I don't really understand it very well.
I think it's really cool to see somebody like Bill Nye on this list. I think that's great.
Fran Drescher certainly deserves to be on this list as an actress. The nanny is a classic show
and everything. One of the greatest voices in laughs you'll hear. But I do believe that part
of the reason for this is her work during the actor's strike and the important work that she did
during that. I know that nobody's going to look at it this way. But one of the things... Don't
get me wrong, actors weren't doing this just for workers. But one of the things that has developed
from the actor's strike and the writer's strike is that other unions have seen this and have learned
and worked this and made it work for them. The actors and writer's strikes were also going
unison with other strikes in local areas where they were able to make some real headway,
some real ground. I imagine most people out there don't look at their job and look at acting
or writing as anything in the same universe they are. Work is work. The work that was done on
these strikes and done by these unions is going to pay dividends for all unions. And we are
already employees. Yes, we're already seeing the evidence of this. So,
Fran Drescher, whether it was for being an actress or the head of the actors guild, I think
belongs on that Hollywood star. But one other note, I just want to get to real quick,
for decades and decades and decades, people have enjoyed horror and sci-fi. But it has never
gotten the respect. You never see horror movies nominated for awards. You never see an actor from a
horror movie nominated for an award. You don't often see them brought up in the greatest movies
you've ever seen. You're never going to hear a sci-fi or a horror movie in those conversations
usually. So, whether we're okay with that or not, that's everybody's own choice. But one thing
that I don't like is that guys like John Carpenter or Robert England or Sam Rainier or some of the
people that have made their bones in that genre have never gotten the respect they deserve.
And here we go, where we're starting to see some of that. Robert England, the Freddie Krueger
character is kind of a one-dimensional character. And those movies are pretty one, two-dimensional
on everything. But there's so many of them. And the work that he was able to do was as a
thespian, as an actor through that makeup. I know it's a silly horror movie. You're not going to
look at it this way. I'm telling you, as somebody who dissects this stuff, I didn't care about the
horror or the cheap blood spills or anything like that. I would marvel at how charming he could be
being this ugly, nasty character and all the facial expressions he could get through across
through that makeup. He's a good actor. Really good actor. Well, I can't speak to any of that because
I don't watch horror movies. But like you said, I do think that they're popular. People like them.
So why wouldn't the actors and the people who create these movies have the same
access to accolades as everybody else and every other genre of movies?
I'm with you, by the way. I'm not a horror guy. Not another horror guy. I like suspense.
I like what Jordan Peel does. I find it, I don't find scary seeing the monster under the bed.
I find the setup to that. What's under the bed? What could possibly be under that?
Yeah, I don't like either of those things. I'm not even a huge suspense guy to be honest with you.
But if you know, Jordan Peel movie comes out or something like that, I tend to watch them
just because they pull me in. And I'm a sucker for the Alfred Hitchcock School of horror,
really, of suspense, where you don't need to show the blood. It's the setup that gets it, so.
I prefer like the 50s horror films, like the fly. Yeah, right on, right on. That's about as
that's about as horror as I get. I know plenty people like those.
Looks like the success of the new Bad Boys movie has Will Smith thinking he's back because he's
got a new single and he's performing it at the BET awards. Good for him. The show airs live at seven
Eastern Standard Time this Sunday. Taraji P. Henson is hosting. Other performers will be
Glowrilla, Ice Spice, Lauren Hill. You've got a bunch of other artists as well.
Interesting little note about this. Two interesting notes. One, Drake leads the nominations with
Seven Nods, which is pretty hilarious considering he is Chernobyl right now. With the beef that
him and Kendrick Lamar got in, Kendrick Lamar like scorched earth. I don't know how Drake comes
back as an artist. I genuinely don't. I'm being very serious about this. What this man,
what Kendrick Lamar has done to Drake's career, I don't know if you can come back from.
And I've never seen that in a rap battle before, but they destroyed him. So Drake enjoy the
nods because I don't even know if he'll show up at the BETs. I'm being dead serious. I don't even
know if he'll show up. All he's going to, if he shows up, all he's got is to look forward to
is Kendrick Lamar fans chanting the song at him. I don't know that he's necessarily going to show up.
What I will focus on is Will Smith. In his Will Smith back, Will Smith never left.
Not really. The idea of him being quote unquote canceled or anything, people don't get
canceled like that. That's not how this works. And take a look at the quote unquote canceled people
in culture and society. Nobody really gets canceled. What happens is somebody, if somebody does
something severely wrong that we as a society are like, that's messed up, they don't work anymore.
They're not going to continue to get work. That's just business. The idea of canceling people
is something that was just created by media. And honestly, a lot of right wing media,
a lot of right wing radio and outlets and everything. They took a hold of this and like,
oh, we can make some headlines off of this. But it doesn't actually exist. It doesn't actually happen.
No, not really. So the idea of Will Smith being quote unquote canceled
was ridiculous to me at the time. And it's even funnier now when he's just got a movie out that
people are going to see. And they threw that movie together. They threw that movie together
quick. Well, that was a very easy franchise to just pop out another movie with.
Yeah. Yeah. And it might as well been another fast and furious.
Yeah. And it's doing well to your point to what you were saying.
Those kind of movies, you can miss me with the whole Will Smith is back thing or Will Smith's
comeback tour. No, he took some time off. He went away. Yeah, he didn't really leave.
As far as him and the whole, you know, not going to the Oscars thing, he got his Oscar.
He got an Oscar already. I don't know that that's really going to hurt him or his career very much,
especially when he's doing movies like bad boys and stuff, you know, he's kind of done the Oscar
thing. The pursuit of happiness, Ali, he's proven everything he can prove as an actor.
They he's done rom coms. He's done serious stuff. He's done it all. So now it's just a matter of
I'm going to do what I enjoy. I'm going to do projects that intrigue me. And he could do that
before he was quote unquote canceled and after he's canceled. If I had to pick, though, I would take
him as an actor over a singer. And then he does just my personal choice of music I like to listen to.
I can't say that. I've listened to a whole lot of I
Summer times. Okay. Otherwise, I have never really gotten into Will Smith as an artist. The only one
I could even think of is just the two of us. No, yeah, yeah, we're not him. No, no, it's no weather. I
don't believe that was one of the samples he used. I don't believe, but maybe did. I don't know
his catalog that well. I did want to touch on one other note. Just we may be getting ahead of a
story here because I've heard some rumblings about this. And now there's even stuff on social
media about it. Ryan Seacrest will be making his hosting debut on Wheel of Fortune this fall
with the return of Vanna White. Possibly. Vanna signed a two year contract to stay on the show
through 2526 season. But there are reports that she doesn't jive well with Ryan. A source says
quote, there is a part of her who wants to walk away sooner. It's just so difficult to do it without
Pat SayJack. So this is this may not be a shot at Ryan Seacrest, like some people are running with.
They just might not have any chemistry right now. And maybe that'll build and maybe it won't.
But I think the important note here is Vanna White has earned her retirement. You know,
and you're thinking about yeah, you're thinking about this. This happens in sports all the time
where a coach gets a team to the big game and they win it all or they don't. And then the next
couple of years as a rebuilding and you're not going to win a lot. So would you rather stick around
for that rebuilding and the grind and losing a bunch of games or you know what, I'm going to leave
all on my top of the mountain. You know, it's the choice that a lot of athletes have to make and
and even some creatives have to make for Vanna. That's something she's got to decide. Do I want to
be a part of a brand new Wheel of Fortune as it goes forward and kind of help with that for older
audiences, the older core audience to have some familiarity with her as they have a new host.
Or do you just want to go ahead and start the whole thing over brand new? The producers made their
decision. Vanna, she signed this contract but it doesn't sound like they're going to hold her to
the fire of it or anything. Well, see, she's also 67 years old. Yeah, I mean, I mean, she wants to
retire. She absolutely should. Maybe she's tired of spelling. Maybe. Or just walking across the
stage and holding her arm up in the air. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, Vanna White never does crossroads,
crosswords. She's never, never, never. She's done with words. Still kind of obnoxious that the
difference between pay that she made to Pat say, Jack. Well, if I'm being honest, I was going to
mention this to you off air. If I saw that, that would have been the deal breaker for me.
Like, you know, like, especially if Ryan, if Seacrest is making more money than her.
I mean, Pat say, Jack, yeah, he put in his time and he did a great job without show $15
million a year. Vanna, $3 million a year. That's a pretty big difference. Yeah. Yeah. Considering
they're both technically hosts as well. I don't think a lot of people look at Vanna that way, but
her technical job is host. She is, again, you don't see it this way, but if you look at the entertainment
industry and you, you're behind the scenes as much as I've been in my career, they look at,
I will tell you this right now on her resume. It says, uh, price is right, host, co-host.
It's not that different than what Ed McMahon did on the tonight show with Johnny Carson.
When, when Pat say, Jack is out there talking and he's not talking to contestants,
who's he's talking to? Vanna. Vanna. And I would just also like to put this out there.
How much work did Vanna have to do off screen to be able to keep that position because I'm sorry,
but she's the eye candy. Yep. Of the show. Yeah. And if she didn't keep her figure and, and all
the things that, you know, these, the stereotypical, this is how women have to look on TV.
That's a heck of a lot more work I'm guessing than whatever Pat say, Jack had to do off screen.
Absolutely. It's a world that I don't know anything about. I've had my agent for a couple of
two different agents telling me to put on weight. That's as close as I've ever come. And even that,
that gets in my head and makes me overthinking everything. I cannot imagine what it would be like
to be Vanna White or some of these other women that are in the industry. It's got, I can't even begin
to imagine. It's a lot of pressure. Sure. We'll get to our news break. We'll come back. We're talking
Beatles with Global Beatles Day coming up on the morning show here at WFHR locally grown radio.
Welcome back everybody. Morning show here at WFHR locally grown radio. Listen James here with you.
Little Beatles to play us in. Little band on the run. That's my favorite Beatles song.
Coming up in a little bit more on that but coming up in a little bit we're going to tell you how
to find the perfect watermelon. Looking forward to that. Hopefully we got time for it if we don't
we'll get that in on third Friday's show. But I do want to get to Global Beatles Day. It's today
and it is today because they did a BBC show called Our World back on June 25th in 1967.
They were already huge by then but it was the first multinational satellite production broadcast
live across the world ever. I'm pretty big deal now. Nowadays of course it means almost nothing
to be able to stream something to the whole world. We could do that. But 67 pretty dang impressive.
Yeah that's about a lot bigger deal then. 400 million people on five continents watch them
perform all you need is love two weeks before they officially released it. John Lennon wrote it
specifically for the broadcast. He kept the chorus simple so even people who didn't speak great
English would get the message. I don't for those that don't know that story I do because I grew up
with a beetle head. But for those that don't know that story think about that and think about the
writing greatness it takes to be able to write a song that is not lame not boring but is basic
and simple and universal yes. I don't know if you don't know that story I would think that you hear
that song and it hits so differently. It's got to hit so differently to people. I also think that
it's also one of the greatest written songs in part because of that because of the fact that so
many people around the world no matter if you speak English or not can sing along to it. But the end
of the song it's the perfect circle song to me. At the end of the song you she loves you yeah yeah yeah
which is a throwback of course to the original hits of the beetles and showing the first
circleness the evolution of the beetles which I think is so cool and unique. Now one other side note
that's come up about this and recently about the beetles. Paul McCartney talked about this in
Ringo Star even touched on it a little bit. One of the things that could have happened
in the beetles had they stuck together could have gone punk could have went a completely different
direction than a lot of people were used to them being the even when they tried to kind of do the
more you know hippie-dippy trippy kind of stuff they were still very loved by the majority of people
didn't really lose a lot of people when they shifted gears and went from I want to hold your hand
to Sergeant Pepper. There is a world where they go from I want to hold your hand I want Sergeant
Pepper to London's calling to you know to the punk end of things which I would have loved to have
seen I think that had been pretty quiet I like the beetles so I hadn't been a fan of anything they
had done but I'd like to have seen anything they have done I don't know if I'd have been a fan
or not but I'd like to have seen and seen where they could have gone with it and regardless of what
you think I loved to have seen an old John Lennon I loved to have seen that I loved to see what
Lennon would have to say about this day and age and so many other things that are going on in the
world today. Yeah if I had to pick my favorite beetles song it probably Blackbird. That's a good one
it's a good one it's a great song. Hey Jude is a personal one to me it means like it just hit
me at a different time in my life when I first really remember hearing it and everything but
I really love band on the run that's hello goodbye hello goodbye is a lot of fun that's a fun one too
while my guitar gently weeps oh classic that's my I think that's my dad's favorite I think that is
my father's favorite I believe that you know what it's my dad or my mom's favorite and I can't
remember don't tell them don't tell them it's our secret we're gonna take a quick break we'll
come back we'll have some more fun everybody on the morning show here at WFHR
welcome back everybody morning show here at WFHR
Melissa and James here with you taking to the top of the hour some fun we'll get to some local
good stuff in a moment here everybody but we've got to talk watermelons a wrap up I think with
a good story of the day Melissa we're gonna help people pick out the perfect watermelon we're
gonna see if I picked out the right one that's on my counter right now right perfect we got
an example right there picture this scenario it's way too hot and humid outside all you want is the
best piece of watermelon money can buy you walk into the local supermarket and see a monolithic
bin of watermelons which one do you choose oh no some some people go with the knocking method
although this requires a great ear and a bit of imagination because there's no science behind it
however they say that a ripe watermelon will have a dull hollow sound whereas in a mature
watermelon we'll have a higher pitch ping sound I would think it has to do with the the density
of the the liquid in there if it has a lot more moisture it's going to be a tastier juice
your watermelon you've done any construction maybe it's a little like finding a stud in the wall
or something you know hollow hollow there we go there we go but according to the folks at
simply recipes.com here are the things you need to look for when buying and looking for the perfect
watermelon look for a yellowish spot underneath this is this is called the field spot or ground spot
if it's that longer oh okay yeah if it's ripe it will be pale buttery yellow if that spot is
like green or white instead then it has not ripened yet yeah so you're saying Melissa that that
means it's been sitting it's sitting on the ground longer it actually ripened in the field
all right right that makes sense I never thought of that so they're going to be better
choose the ones with brown course webbing on the outside there's a good chance they're perfectly
ripe and even sweeter too hmm I got to look at a picture of that I'm not sure I know what that
they're yeah oh yeah yeah yeah yeah the the the brown webbing in between the green oh wow
see like on top of the green oh now I would have thought okay now that yeah I don't know anything
that I I would have thought that that was a bad thing honestly just not not again not knowing
anything okay interesting avoid the watermelon with any visible cuts dense or bruising some
minor scratching is okay but anything worse than that and it's no good well I don't know if I go
that far but if you have a better option yeah it does seem awfully harsh and I don't like the idea
of wasting food I don't because in perfect fruits don't necessarily you know I mean if they're
damaged that's a different thing if they're literally like cracked open into the rind then yeah
they're probably not going to be good I remember my Nana I think it was tomato she was picking out
her something but whatever it was a lady grabbed a tomato and put it back and and and and just
kind of shook her head and put it back and my Nana picked it up and looked at it and it's like
I'll love you and and put it in the cart like I never forget it as she said it's so sweet I think
she said it off a sweet like sweeter than she did to me but Nana always like she liked produce
it was a little banged up sometimes and everything she felt that other people hadn't picked it up
and touched it as much or I don't I don't know all the details I couldn't get in her head but
yeah well we get away from the where we get locked into this everything has to be perfect well
no it doesn't yeah but I would say that this example would be like you wouldn't buy a banana
that the the peel was open a little bit at the top or the bottom or split along the side you
wouldn't buy that one I think that's what they're talking about with watermelon yeah that makes sense
and finally buy them in season the best time to buy a watermelon is roughly April to September so
get get you some yeah yeah and if you're getting them locally here in Wisconsin later yes yes they
haven't grown yet but you can you can get early in on as far as your like kind of old school or
your home recipes of picking out watermelon my dad does do the pounding my dad loves watermelon I
cannot yeah he knocks on him that's what he's always done I don't think he knows about some of these
other methods though I got to tell him about these especially that one you meant you touched on
early the first one yeah with the the bigger bigger white spot on the bottom that is more yellow
than white wouldn't I guess that wouldn't I guess that that is pretty cool and enjoy everybody enjoy
your watermelon this song watermelon is awesome watermelon so good watermelon so I don't care
about the seeds or anything and the ones that are in stores right now are you know they're being
