Hour 1: The Most Depressing Day of the Year

Mornings with WFHR · Mon Jan 15, 2024

Good morning, Wisconsin. Good morning, world. It's a new day. Thanks for kicking it off

with us right here at WFHR, locally grown radio. Got your host, James J. I am joined by

Melissa K. Good morning. Seth Havhacker. Good morning. And the best listeners in radio.

Thanks for joining us, everybody. We hope you're having a great, great stare to your

week out there. We're going to kick things off the way we like to, talking a little

mother nature with our friend, Brittany. Good morning, Brittany. Good morning. My teeth

are, my brain is still unfreezing. My teeth are still chattering. I just talk in between.

I turn my mic off and just say, so you don't hear the chattering. How is yours, Brittany?

It's so cold that my teeth actually hurt to be out there. I just like the smile, you

know, the sun's out and I'm like, ow, ow. It's like biting into ice cream. Yeah. Did

you, did you have a good weekend, Brittany? Oh, I did. I did. You know, I got to play

around in the snow. Got a big chunk of snow, right? Very cool. What is mother nature

gotten store for us? All right. Well, she is just going to keep biting us with the cold

unfortunately. So we are stuck in a windshield advisory until noon. Our temperatures right

now are below zero. We're at negative nine and it feels like 24 below. You can get frostbite

in 15 minutes in those conditions. Yep. So you know, that's fast. I've got, yeah, yeah,

yeah. Sorry, didn't mean to rough go ahead. No, it's okay. We're all thinking the same

thing. Let's just layer up, bundle up, cover up all your exposed skin if you're going

outside today and if you're driving around, throw that winter emergency kit in the car,

have a sleeping bag, hand warmers, all of those things just in case because you don't want

to be stuck out there. This is dangerous cold. So our windshield advisory expires at noon.

Our high temperatures today are going to climb to a very, very warm one degree. Break out

the shorts. And it's going to feel like 15 below because our winds are still whipping

20 miles an hour on occasion. But the shorts away. You're no more shorts, no more shorts.

That's a good thing we didn't have the backers here at the front. Yeah. Yeah. My gun,

like that game. Oh, that would not have happened in Green Bay. Oh, no, it would have been

a very different game. No more like that Kansas City game. Yeah, exactly. Shatter

helmet soon. Exactly. My goodness. But yeah, we're stuck in the cold

through tomorrow too. So just keep that in mind. We're not going to see double digits until

Wednesday or Thursday, but those double digits are going to be feeling still like zero.

We're not going to see 30s until this time next week. Oh, yeah. I was looking ahead. I

did see that. And I did find some like a hope in that though. Like there is still, you

know, there's 20s coming up. I don't know. You got to do what you got to do to get through

these weeks, these times and everything. And for me, like looking ahead to the next week

or whatever, it was a lot easier than next spring. It was a little closer, a little closer,

a little nicer. I did want to touch on one thing you brought up there, Brittany. I have

for since I think it was eighth grade. No, ninth grade, I think it was. I got frostbite

in my fingertips and in my toes. And just anybody out there that deals with that, I wish

I had heard this years ago. If you put your gloves on and your shoes on in a warm place

in your hands already, it helps a lot. It really goes a long way with that. Putting on

your gloves outside, they're not even, you're barely going to feel your gloves. It doesn't

just as go as far. Oh, goodness. And I will say too, it's gloves versus mittens. Mittens

are your better choice from these days because your fingers are, you know, kind of like body

to body, right? If you're going to get hypothermia, that's how you warm up fast. Same thing.

Your fingers are all together in your mittens and your one thumbs alone. So the thumbs

are more susceptible, but your fingers are going to hold up much longer. Throw a hand

warmer in your mittens too. Oh, I was 46 when I realized this. I did not think about

Brittany. That is, that is very helpful. That is a good tip right there. Thank you for

that, Brittany. We appreciate you. But now you struggling with frostbite though at last,

right? Yes. Yes. Yes. It's like burning now. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Always appreciate talk

with you, Brittany. We'll hang out tomorrow. Okay. No good. Stay warm. You too. Have

a good one. Thanks, Brittany. Big big big Brittany Marlow, Jordi, guess there. She's

the best. She's awesome. We appreciate her. We got good stuff coming up for you, everybody.

It is of course Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We are going to be celebrating the man celebrating

the man's message, talking about him a little bit later, looking forward to kind of wrap

up our show, talking a little bit, Dr. King, some random facts about Dr. King. We'll also

talk about ways that you can celebrate this day. We'll get into that. We've also got

a couple of other big ones to get into. It's blue Monday. We got to talk about that

means the government is banning joky messages and highways on highway signs. I want to

talk about that. There's a couple of things. All joys. Yeah. We'll also have of course

the WFHR birthday anniversary club sponsor coming. That's coming up in a little bit. We'll

look forward to diving in that nine o'clock hour. It's a Monday. You know how we kick things

off on Mondays in the nine o'clock. It is the kitchen's open. All right. The kitchen's

open. Yeah. I can have a great segment for you. I got to read that one last night. It's

so good. I like it. I like where this one's going. It's going to be fun. A little bit of

entertainment news for you as well. We'll catch up with the cast and crew of the Glassman

Ashery, Wisconsin's Rapids Community Theaters of coming play. That's a good get, man. Thank

you. I worked really hard on that. I worked hard on that one. So popular. You know, famous.

Looking forward to that as well. All those things coming up. But I wanted to start here

if you guys don't mind. And first off, you guys all have a good weekend. Melissa, do you

think we can? Yeah. It went by really fast for some reason. I hear you. I hear you. I hear

you. Yeah. Yeah. But good on you. If you know your body needed it, good on you. There's

not much to do when the snow storm and they get really cold. Yeah, it might as well

hibernate a little bit. Right. It's a good idea. That's what I did. Nice. Did you have

a good one, Seth? I did. We had, of course, the snow. That means my children were outside

a lot. That's a good thing. Yeah. Yeah. You know, get tired and played in the snow until

it got a little too cold for it, of course. But, uh, but yeah, no, I just, it was hung around

mostly. I think most people hung around the house this weekend. Yeah. Yeah. I came here

a little bit for some River Kings games, but other than that, yeah. Right on. Very cool.

I imagine you, um, everybody had a bit of a better weekend, maybe than this mom did.

Uh-oh. I don't know if this is universal or not. Uh, but it seems like it's a universal

thing for parents and kids alike where, you know, you get to that certain age,

mom and dad may be a little worried. They don't know you like they use to it everything and

they want to kind of find out, but they don't want to pry. Maybe necessarily. Maybe some

parents do. Some parents, most parents, I think don't necessarily want to do that. But you,

you know, you, you care. You're worried and everything. Your child is out in the world and

all this who knows what they're experiencing. So most parents probably aren't going to look

for a journal or something like that. But what is the one thing that most parents will do?

Check out that top drawer. They're going to peek in that. They're going to peek in your drawers.

You're going to peek in those in those drawers. You see what's going on in there? What's going

on in that underwear drawer? You know, some of that. They try to shut it. Now I, um, I made this,

I did a little homework for this story this weekend and I was talking to my mom and dad.

My mom and dad, I grew up very fast and they were very loose with me. I had very

few rules growing up because I mostly kind of stayed in line. I was a knucklehead, but by the time

I came up here, I was pretty much understanding what I had to do to, you know, get, uh,

keep things moving and all that. So I, I, I never thought my mom and dad did this. And so I,

I asked them, like, well, mom, dad, did you guys ever, you know, look at my drawers or anything,

no, or anything like that? And my mother with the greatest poker face of all time looks at me and

says, you'll never know. I did not know she had this gear in her. I did not know, like, I'm

seeing my mother with strangers act, uh, you know, act this way. And I've, I've seen her put her

foot down with my brother and sister and I before, but not, not missed, Mrs. Confident, Mrs. Uh,

Miss Spy. But as your mom ever considered a career in diplomacy, she was sent her over to the

Russian. It's like, yeah, it was, it was, it was, it was, I could not read it. Like I'm good at

reading people. I could not read if she had her. She had, uh, that's good. I like it. Well,

I know for, I know if she definitely didn't, uh, uncertain times because there were times where

I hit things in there that were alive. Uh, so, uh, a reptile Wrangler was called to an Australian

home where a mother found one of the world's most venomous snakes in her son's underwear drawer.

Oh, nice. Melbourne snake catcher Mark Pelley, aka the snake hunter, uh, said he was called,

he was called to a home where a woman found a five foot Eastern brown snake in her three year

old son's underwear drawer. Oh, he's only three. Oh, okay. He's only three. All right. I do,

but come on. You got to like the idea like he was catching them and keeping them. No, no, no. Oh my

goodness. Pelley shared video showing the moment. He opened the drawer in the boys bedroom and

confirmed the presence of the Eastern brown snake, considered the second most venomous species

of snake in the world. Yeah. Nice. Quote. Yeah, that's the snake. Yeah, it's very

bird stressor. Yeah. We don't, we got enough snakes. We were good on snakes. We don't need

this one. This one's, I mean, we're nobody's gonna miss this guy. Sorry, Larry. Um, Larry,

this snake. I don't know why I like that though. I like his name's Larry. Uh, Quote, that's not

something you see every day, Pelley said in the video. The reptile Wrangler said the serpent

apparently hid inside some clothes. The mother had brought in from the clothes line at the

previous day and ended up being placed inside. Oh, that's, wow. I don't, I like, it's one thing

to find it and then to like, oh, how did they get in here? You've got to figure that out. But

then when you find out how it got in there, I, the guilt that you got to feel from that one. Oh,

god. And terror. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And how, like, are you buying, are you immediately going out

and buying a dryer? Are you, like, I'm not putting my clothes out anymore. Yeah, no, never. Yeah,

it's like I never, ever doing that again. No, a five-foot snake would have some heft to it.

How did you not notice when you were folding the trousers? Yeah. How? Five-foot snake in there.

I, I appreciate that, Melissa. I read this article and that's one of my first thoughts was like,

how do you not realize that? I mean, I don't know. I don't want to pick on the lady. I mean, it's

certainly, you know, she was an accident. It can happen. I mean, she does have a three-year-old.

She's obviously overworked. Yeah, right, right. So I love, I love the understatedness,

though, of the snake guy. He's like, oh, that's a snake, you know. He's exactly. That's a big one,

too. Yeah. You call that a snake? Yeah, he is. He is a snake. He is a real snake.

We immediately go to Prakanal Dundee. We have no other frame of reference, man. We would like

to apologize to the country of Australia. A true Australia. Yeah, a beautiful country. I'd

love to come visit itself. Australians are wonderful people. Not your snakes. Not your snakes. No,

or spiders or scorpion. Man, you got a lot of things like a Killian Australia. All Australia is full

of nothing but like a cheese. I worked with a couple actors from Australia once, and that's the

first things out of their mouths. If you visit, stay on the streets. Like they tell you to stay

where they'll go off the beaten path. There is no. Because all Australia is... She will die. Every

inch of Australia is off the beaten path, basically. That's a joy. That's a fun. I was still checking

out. Would you go to Australia? Yeah, you know, free trip, all that. Yeah, I would love to see it.

Yeah, that's a beautiful thing. It looks like a beautiful country. Absolutely. It's huge.

Yeah. The Opera House alone. I hear it as a Melbourne. The Melbourne. I hear it as the greatest

acoustics in the world. I've heard people say that. That alone would make me want to go there.

The perfect venue for your Simpsons one-man show. Yes, yes. That's a book at now, man.

Be right back. The best dough ever. Yeah, it is. Oh, good. It would sound it there.

We will take a time out. We'll come back and do some celebrating with WFHR Birthday and

Anniversary Club coming up right here on WFHR. I mean, why else will we... It makes sense, right?

It's time to do some celebrating. We got a bumper music back, everybody. Celebrating that and

celebrating you with the birthday and anniversary club. We're going to dive right in right now

before we do want to remind you. You can get us those birthdays and adversaries by sending

them to info at wfhr.com, james.mailup.etsivicmedia.us. Be sure to reach out to any of our staff that way.

All of us have the similar emails, Melissa.k.etsivicmedia.us and so on and so on.

You can direct messages as well on our Facebook pages. Hit us up in the WFHR or

or iFacebook pages, just like those pages and send us a message. And cue card. Come on.

Cue card. And telepropter froze. Yeah, telepropter froze. It's so cold out, everybody.

I'm sorry. I apologize. There is another way you can get in touch with us. I just cannot

remember how to do it. Delay for now. Ah, there we go. Yes, Edison, no. Call up and join the

conversation. 715-424-2600-715-424-2600. If you're listening to us on the civic media app,

we appreciate you downloading the app. You were just to touch it to away from joining the conversation.

That's right. Let's dive right in and let me see here. Oh, I need a one or a two.

Let's see here. Seth, give me a one or a two. Two. All right. Give us that qualifier. All right.

Get right into the cellar right in here. And first up, I want to wish a very happy birthday to

my cousin, Sherry Mayloff Hoffman. Oh, birthday Sherry. Sherry's awesome. Sherry's great.

And like every other Mayloff woman, a spitfire. My cousins grow it up. Yeah, just they are

something. Love them. That is one of those phrases I was going over this weekend actually.

And my family uses phrase a lot. Boy, that's something.

Boy, that's something. I'm the definition of something. I've had this phrase said about me

my whole life. And it's one of those ones where it can be positive and negative. Boy, you're

something. You know, you are really something. You really mystified people. Boy, he is something.

Yeah, he is something. All right. He's something. It's the all right that comes afterwards.

If it's boy, he's something. All right. Then, then you know, it's more than the negative.

You're like, oh, wait a minute, but you really are something. It is. It is. It is. It is.

It is. I'm fair. But yeah, you have to say right always something. You know, all right. Yeah,

it's something. All right. Cousin, Sherry, you sure are some. You're a good one. We appreciate you.

Have a good day. It's something good. It's something good. There you go. We also want to wish a

very happy birthday to Tim Ferris. Happy birthday, Tim. Enjoy your day. And a very happy birthday to

our qualifier today, Kate Sanders. Happy birthday, Kate. Like the Kate. Congratulations. Yeah. Congrats,

Kate. We wish you a great one. Enjoy and keep getting us those birthdays and anniversaries,

everybody. We will have. We can't announce too much right now, but we will be collecting,

we're collecting names because we will have prizes at the beginning of every month. We will. Like

we've always done with our birthday and anniversary club. Mm-hmm. Stay tuned. Let's take a look at

our celebrity list. Skrillex is 36. Huh? Skrillex huge with our audience. Our audience really

big into the techno techno. No. Skrillex, 8,000 beats per minute producer responsible for tons of

electronic music and an incredible producer. Great ear for sound. Real big fan of it. It's

cool. I didn't realize. Oh, is that his name? Okay. Oh, nice. Good to see why you changed it.

Nice work. Nice boring name. Yeah. Pitbull is 43. Somewhere pumping his fist. Somewhere

there's a beat and he is he is he is partying. If this is buffing his head and pumping his fist,

yeah. If he is if he is his birthday, he is definitely celebrating somewhere. He's doing

these party right now for sure. Does he have eyes? I've never seen him without the sunglasses.

I don't think he has eyes. Oh, the first picture that popped up does. Oh, right, right,

right. I'll show you how much I look at his picture too. He in the specifically in my southern

floor to Miami area, he does a lot of good. Like he he he he's one of these guys. He's not

forgotten his roots at all. Cool. Does a lot for kids. Does a lot for raising funds for homeless

shelters and things. Yeah. One of those guys that seems to really believe in giving back.

Cool. Actually, his eyes kind of remind me of you, a Brenner. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. Oh, I got to look

at him now. Now I got to look at him. So that if he looks like you'll Brenner, why on earth is he

wearing sunglasses? Yeah. Yeah. And the shape. Yeah. A little bit. Okay. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

One of the best quarterbacks of all time. Drew Breeze is 45 today for Manuel and St.

quarterback. Very, very interesting career. Drew Breeze, I think is one of those career one of

those careers too, where you look at and you're like, well, that's determination. That's

yeah. If if it was about the money, Drew Breeze gets drafted, has a nice contract from the San

Diego Chargers and is building a career here and makes some couple of million here and there or

whatever, enough to where he could have gone on to do other things with his life. He has a

rotator cuff surgery and they think his career is done. Yeah. Like he is not he is flirting with

the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. The dolphins are not that interested and they kind of

lowball them a little bit. The Saints offer him a not only a contract, but a future. He goes there,

not only wins a Super Bowl from the New Orleans Saints, which still is just mind boggling to be

the New Orleans Saints were able to win a Super Bowl. Right. Did this after Katrina and did this

while breaking tons and tons of records at at five foot, what 10, 5 foot 11, something like that.

That's all this guy. No, not quite a career. Boy, if if not for him,

what where would the Saints be? I ask you. I ask you. Well, and I've also heard this too, without

his performance at that size, does Russell Wilson get drafted in the third round or is it even

later? Does he give a chance? Get a chance. There's a lot of short quarterbacks now that are coming out.

They all have a chance because everybody thinks why can turn him into Drew Breeze. Right. Regina

King is 53. Oh, yes. Huge fan of Regina King. Love her work. Sandra Palmer on 24. She was

also Cuba junior's wife and Jerry McGuire. Sandra Bullock's partner in a miscongeniality.

Great voice actor too. Did the voices on the boondocks and just a wonderful voice actor too.

Yeah, she's great. Let's see here. Lisa Lisa is 57. Lisa Lisa Lisa Valaz from Lisa Lisa

and the cult jam. The cult jam. Head to toe. I'll cry it out. Let the beat hit him. Lost in

emotion, of course. It's more hit songs than I had remembered. Me too. Yeah. Pretty good career.

The great, the amazing Mario Van Peoples is 67 today. Director of New Jack City also was in

New Jack City. He got to play Malcolm X and Ali. Columbia University graduate degree in economics.

He is, of course, the son of Melvin Van Peoples, one of the greatest directors in history.

I think Melvin Van Peoples, if you look at what Melvin had to work with and the times that he

was creating the work that he was, I think he is revolutionary in that industry. Right.

Especially a black box plantation. Yeah, he basically invented the genre. Right. He was the

first one to get there and then all of a sudden, whoo, where to go. Huge fan of Mario Van Peoples too.

Great, great director, actor, all of the above. Yep. And some people no longer with us,

like the great Lloyd Bridgesborne is staying in 1913, father of bow and Jeff superstar,

of course, of airplane and airplane too. And yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I picked the wrong week to

quick, quick, stupid glue. Lloyd Bridges got so many great lines. You know, people remember for

that, but that was like towards the tail end of his career. Man, he was a working actor. Yeah.

He was in so many movies. What was that? He was in a TV show, a sea hunt. I think it's what

it was called. He was the star of that as well. So no, go back and see all the stuff he did. Oh,

he had wonderful hair, man. Yeah. Yeah, his hair was something else. Yeah, he's in those two as

well. Yep. Whenever we're talking about these older performers, I hope that our younger listeners

out there go back and do a quick engine search on them and look at them. Terry and I were talking

about Angela Lansbury on Friday when she was celebrating her birthday this weekend. And for those

that haven't, you got to see young Angela Lansbury, man. Yeah, you got to see young Angela Lansbury.

Look, yeah. But I would recommend Joe versus the volcano. Oh, good choice. Oh, you just made

me so happy. Oh, I felt like I was the one person in the world that loved that movie growing up.

It was on WG at all the time and I'd watch it every time. Yeah, no, you are the only. Yeah,

kidding. That's a great movie. Ronnie Van Zantt would have been celebrating a birthday

today, born in 1948, Pestway in 1977, lead singer, songwriter for Leonard Skinnerd,

free bird. Well, there's so many sweet home Alabama. God, I mean, there's so many great

Leonard Skinnerd hits. Yes, he was, he was, he was one of a kind. And of course, Dr. Martin Luther

King, Jr., born on this day in 1929, Pestway in 1968. We're going to be celebrating Dr. King

throughout the show today. We'll have some random facts about him that I thought were interesting

also talking about different ways that you can celebrate the day. We'll get into all of that.

Do one or mind you once more. Get us those birthdays and anniversaries. Everybody,

we love celebrating with you. Keep them coming. Mm-hmm.

Big happy birthday to my cousin, Cherry, male off Hoffman. Happy birthday, Cher. Happy birthday,

Cher. Happy birthday. Happy birthday to Tim Ferris. Tim Ferris, happy birthday.

And a very happy birthday to our qualified Kate Sanders. Happy birthday. Congratulations, Kate.

Enjoy your day. We hope it is a great one for you. And we want you to keep getting those

those birthdays and anniversaries everybody. We will come back and we're going to talk about

what Blue Monday is. Today's Blue Monday, just so you know, we're going to talk about that.

We'll come back on the morning show here at WFHR.

Welcome back, everyone. Morning show here at WFHR, locally grown radio. Got your host, James J.

joined by Melissa K. And Seth Hatbacker. Good morning, everyone. We hope you're having a good

morning. I like this. I like the bumper music, all right? We're making everyone with a summer song.

Yeah, yeah. We go sad. I know, I'm sorry. It was random. I just grabbed a bunch of songs

in the room in there. It's nice. We appreciate it, Beth. Nice work.

We are Blue Da-da-da-da-da-da. Happy Blue Monday, everyone.

Yeah, I did that. I did that. There we go. That's the way to do it.

Well, I found a note. I should have put that one in there. Yeah, I'm sorry.

Thanks for getting your started, James. I'm going to let her keep going too. I'm not going to stop her.

I'm like, so today is Blue Monday. It's supposed to be the most depressing day of the year.

A travel company in the UK came up with it in 2005 as a PR stunt. So if you're having a great day,

don't let that mess with you. Good thing the sun shining. Yeah, yeah. It's based on a formula

that's supposed to calculate how depressing any given day is by looking at things like weather,

post-holiday stress, New Year's resolutions were not able to fulfill. And the fact that Mondays

are just kind of rough in general. Most experts say it isn't very scientific, but the formula

claims that in the northern hemisphere, the saddest day of the year is always the third Monday in

January. And the happiest day is in mid to late June. Even if Blue Monday isn't backed by science,

most people would agree. Winter is a little more depressing than other seasons. So the Toronto

star posted a list of some science-backed ways to cheer yourself up. They include getting some

exercise, getting some sun, if possible. Vitamin D can also help with that. Doing something fun

with people you like and eating some chocolates specifically 85% dark chocolate. Darker the better.

Nice. I can agree with that more. Yeah. I love that statement right there.

And I shout out to the Toronto star. And anybody that does this, the low hanging fruit of Blue

Monday and just focusing on that news wise is I get a lot of people doing that. But I think that

the other side of that is just as interesting. Yeah, absolutely. Also seasonal depression

lights can also be helpful. You can get lamps that will kind of be like sunlight since we don't

get a whole lot of it. I have found to that I've taken vitamin D now for a few years, especially

this time of year. And that seems to help me as well because I do have I'm very much affected by

the if nothing else in winter about the darkness. I mean, I don't like anything about winter.

But it's the extended dark periods. I think that really bothers me. So I found that helps me a lot.

Margaret Renkels the comfort of crows is a collection of essays that celebrate the wonder

in inducing nature to be found in your backyards. That's something that they recommend. It is

very good. I encourage people to check that out if you haven't read it before. And they also

recommend get moving moving around keeping yourself. It's not just exercise. We talk at just

moving. Even if you're just getting up and doing things, it keeps the mind active and keeps the

day moving. Just like juggling is notion. Yeah, nice. Do something fun with people you like. That

one is pretty self explanatory. But it seems too simple to work, but it is. It works. It's

funny. Yeah, it does. It's really interesting. Yep. We have a chance. We have a tendency to

hibernate when things get cold. When we're feeling depressed. And the hardest thing

honestly to do is to get yourself out there and hang out with people. And that's what you need to do.

I have I've touched on this a lot with students and friends of mine. And even the therapists that

I've talked to, there is a huge, huge amount of people that take your traditional introvert,

if you will. Now, first off, most people are a mix of extrovert and introvert. Very few people

are one or the other. Most of us have a combination in us of both. Keep that in mind. I think when

you hear those terms thrown around, especially when other people are, it's one thing for a person

to describe themselves that way. That I have no issue with. But when other people are describing

people that way, it can tend to kind of create a bias in somebody's head. Oh, this is an introvert.

Oh, they don't like people or something like that. Right. I probably lean more introvert

than I do extrovert. But I love people. I love people. I like reading well people. I got

being around people all those things. Right. It's a layered thing. It's a different type of thing.

Right. And it's like, it's like anything like anything else. It's a spectrum. You're not

all introvert. You're not all extrovert. You're somewhere in the middle there in certain situations

and things like that. You're usually more than one than the other. But you're not completely

one over the other. Usually you're not one. And some days you're more one than the other.

Absolutely. Right. Depends on lots of different things. Yeah. Your traditional introverts

came out of the pandemic, having even harder time being around people and being in group,

being in crowds and everything. And this is something that I've always looked at

others in research and everything. I did not realize I also have been struggling with this.

I'd say yeah. And then you add on top of that, the winter, where as Melissa touched on perfectly,

we live in Shaxx. We're all just kind of keeping indoors. Pibernating. Pibernating and all that.

It's tough. So I encourage people to know. The piles of blankets.

I encourage people to not only reach out, but to find it in themselves to reach out to

those that are struggling with that. We have a call coming in. Let's go ahead and take it.

Good morning. What's on your mind? Yeah. You guys were talking about Australia before the

I wrote these. Yeah. I was a Vietnam house, a medic in there. But anyways, we got to go on

hour and air hour. Why were there? And they just opened up Australia when I was there. So I went

to Australia for six days. Wow. With the medic matters driver him and I went together. So

we'll just think of it. I didn't get to see what I wanted to see because he was a glitzy guy.

He wanted to hang around all the fancy, you know. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Didn't need all that stuff.

I wish I were to went with somebody else or I wanted to see the countryside and stuff like that.

Oh, okay. He wanted to see all the bars, junk like that.

We don't get to do this very often with you, sir. We do appreciate your service. Thank you so

much for that. And thank you for calling up as much as you do. And in love hearing that, I didn't

know that about you. That's really interesting. That's really cool. That's very cool. Would you go

back to Australia? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Cool. I was there in March of 68.

It was just coming to the end of their summertime. Oh, that's true. Yeah. That's right. Going

into winter. Yeah. Interesting. Yeah. Appreciate the call, sir. Thanks so much.

I wish. Yeah. You have a great day. Yeah. Best listeners in radio. That is interesting.

That's really cool. Another thing they suggest is going to Australia. No.

This time of year, yeah. Summer. Yeah. Let's do it. They do say travel to, you know, find the light.

You know, you use warm light to improve sleep. That's something you can do.

University of Pennsylvania did a big study on mental exhaustion this time of year and found that

a lot of some of this can be some of these like old lights can kind of the fluorescent light.

Some of that stuff can actually drain your energy. Yeah. Yeah. Which is crazy to think of.

But yeah. Well, and how much time we spend looking at screens now? That's part of it too. Yeah.

I think you're right. Yeah. It's the cost of that too. Second thing on this list. That's a really

good note, Melissa. I would have gone past that. That's a good note. It's something to keep in mind

as time, like any time of year, but especially this time of year where we're probably looking at

screens maybe more. Maybe I think we are. I think that's true. And finally, again, take a dose of

very dark chocolate. Just, you know, there's never a bad time. There's never bad. It's not bad for

you at all. Daily dose of dark chocolate. James, I think you've had enough. No, I have to prove

to him. It's, it's a morse. It's my, it's my medicine. It's taking my medicine for my mental

health. I started this slowly turning the bean there. I said, I'm broken the pot. I'm broken the

pot. We're going to break. Talk to Brad. She's not Sean Connery. I know it's Sean Connery. It's

started as the brain, the brain impression you have to do like there. Yeah, you have to cover

your, but then slowly you turn into Sean Connery. Connery. We named the dog Indy.

Wasn't it tentative to be, but there we are. We're there. We will take a quick time out. We're

going to come back. Have some more fun on the morning show at WFHR. Locally grown radio.

Welcome back, everyone. Morning show here at WFHR. Locally grown radio.

There is a photo.

We're about to work in on some of just to try to do the photo.

Boy, you really are hitting us with the summer stuff. I wasn't, that was a trial.

I really wasn't, everybody. I'm not going to be greasy. I'm not going to, don't you, give us a

nice paper cut you put lemon juice in it. Let's go over the temperatures every hour,

or we'll be come back out of the air. Let's just go ahead and do that, too.

It's funny you said that about the paperclip, Melissa. I got a cardboard cut this weekend.

Ooh, deep and worst, yeah, just driving nuts.

So this is interesting. Is this something that needs to stop, or a few grouches just ruining the fun?

The federal government is ordering states to stop putting funny messages on highway signs.

We're talking about the light up ones that normally say things like buckle up,

and don't drink a drive. Studies have shown that messages that include humor or pop-up

culture references can be good because you're more likely to remember them. Some states even let

you submit your own ideas. But the Department of Transportation claims that that can also be

dangerous, take longer to read, and cause crashes because of distracted drivers that can also confuse

people. For example, officials in Ohio got calls a few years ago when they posted a message for

Christmas that said like a froggy lay drive safe. Froggy lay drive safe. Some people didn't get

the reference from the movie, a Christmas story. The feds recently updated their 1,100 page manual

and said states have two years to comply with the new regulations and stop posting funny messages.

Now we have some of the types of things that they're banning. We have a couple of the examples

here that we'll get into to wrap up the conversation. Before that though, I think that there's

something that needs to be said. I don't want to like overstep here anything, so I'm just speaking

for myself. But when did this happen in society where we instead of like hey, be better drivers,

be smarter. No, we're going to instead know we're going to dump things down for you. That's the

route we're going to take. Instead of being like hey, be better drivers. Don't be as distracted

by this stuff. Don't be able to do two things at once. That's what we ask of our drivers. When

you turn 16 and take a driver's test, these are some of the things we ask of our drivers. At what

point are we just like you know what? No, we're asking too much. We're asking way to we're going to

dump things down. We're to just drive safe. Not not some funny sign or anything that might actually

help people remember to do these things. No, instead we're going to dump things down. It goes

back to this whole argument too of ranked choice voting. The people are quote unquote the American

person is to dumb the figure this out. When did we start? Why do we start doing this?

What is going on? Where's our standards? Where's where's the bar? Am I alone on this? Like 424,

2600 like I feel like there's got to be a balance here where yeah, maybe some things we need to

you know rework. Otherwise also smarten up. I would go one further. Okay, so how is it having

now to be fair there's not a ton of these you know these boards that you can put messages you know

if there's a traffic accident or something up ahead. There's not a ton of those. If those are

distracting, what about billboards? Yes, yeah, I mean I have said from the day I started driving.

Why? Why do we have billboards that have tons of words on them to read? You can't possibly read

it while you're driving. No, I'm telling you. We don't have like we don't really carpool all that

much. Yes vehicles contain one driver and that's it. So it's not like it's there for the benefit

of your passengers. No, I'm telling you if that's not do the double standard here if that's the case

if that's distracting because a lot of billboards have funny things on them you know funny sayings

and that kind of stuff. TV screens now. Exactly. And they actually change while you're driving and

that could even distract you more right. So where's that let's let's figure this out here which

what are we really worried about here we can I it's been done before they have banned billboards

before yeah they can do it again. So how much advertising power is there and billboards anyway?

That's a great question. When was the last time you did something because you saw it on a billboard?

I'm not talking about your you're on the highway and you're looking for a place to stop and you

see a sign you know the signs to tell you the eat if you want to eat there's the rest around it.

That's right. Exactly. That's the highway signs are the only ones I look at.

Yeah yeah right. I could not tell you the the last time I looked at a billboard was when we had one

WFHR had one. Yeah that was the last time I looked at it otherwise and I don't mean this to hurt

the billboard industry or to hurt any businesses that are advertising with them. Right.

We do know good if we lie to our audience I'm not going to do that I mean very honest I just don't

see myself I'm a very if I if I am driving I am all tuned in I am locked into the road and what's

going on the way you should be exactly I'm not got it could be it could be an advertisement for

for me it like hey James is one man show or whatever and everything and I'm not going to look at it

right I don't know I I'm really glad I was hoping Melissa because Melissa's brought this up

before about billboards and I was hoping you would touch on that again thank you Melissa I think

I think that was a really good let's have some fun with this though and let's look at some types

of the things that they are banning okay they pulled together for this article some of the best

highway messages we've seen over the years tailgating is for football not highways that's good

it's good I like that one what's worse than pineapple on pizza a car wreck oh that's oh huge slam

against pineapple and pizza wow oh I like this is funny one and I this is good visiting in laws slow

down get there late that's funny that's good oh texting and driving one that said get your head

out of your apps I like that that's a good one I like that one not bad a Christmas vacation one

that read cousin Eddie says Twitter's full put the phone down nice nice that's a great one

he'll use that forever now that's full no I can't use it anymore every Christmas I would

see that one up yeah lots of turn signal ones don't be a stinker use your blinker yes

does your blinker not work or what oh man and turn signals the original instant message

hey nice oh I love that that is a pet peeve of mine oh say not signaling oh I hate it and

and that's yes those are good I love them all another one at Christmas that said Santa sees you

win your speeding four eyes and Mississippi two eyes on the road oh nice that's a good one that's a

clever one yeah baby Yoda uses the force but still needs a car seat it's actually a fine that's

actually not a bad point actually interesting that's interesting that you can float he can you get

that grow cool things grow cool by the way one of four of July one for the fourth of July don't

draw don't drive star spangled hammered a little bit of a reach but I like it I like the creativity

yeah yeah I stretched a little bit I love the creativity of it's amazing yeah good stuff when do

government employees get to be creative you know I mean let him have this for St. Patrick's Day

luck of the Irish won't help you with a DWI that's a good one that's a good one two two that

embraced the New England accent use your blinker blinker it's spelled blinker blinker go to extra

yod this weekend dry seba yahosa one for smokers will be blunt don't drive high

oh that's clever that's good that's a good one another one that said puff puff pass the keys to

a designated driver oh there it's good that's a good one too I like that yeah one during summer

that red 100 is the temperature not the speed limit nice and a ghost buster's reference who

are you gonna call nobody you're driving oh that might be my favorite one that's a good one that

is some great ones oh we want to take this away no well we have we have two years I guess you can

get all their their fun things into two years but well and we could say this too that often times

with these things when we have time maybe that you know cooler heads will prevail or something

reverse this a little bit yeah there's got to be a balance more important to work on like I

don't know healthcare well it is the Department of Transportation there's a lot of things there a

lot of things that they can work on that are not related to to highway signs and safety the

rail run headlines and all kinds of things I believe they've got enough on their plate they don't

need to be adding this yeah many people are seeing their first significant snowfall in a long time

so you might have forgotten how to deal with it and I bring this up because it's a knucklehead

story oh well first things first just in case there was one person out there but it still felt

this you can't burn snow away okay police in the city of Bellevue Nebraska actually had to make

that announcement a local officer posted this online quote if you live in old town Bellevue

you and are currently pouring gas onto the snow and trying to light it on fire as a form of snow

removal you can't do that our officers are on the way to talk to you right now and quote we mean

you Carl yeah Carl there aren't any further details but it does sound like anyone and then

doesn't sound like anyone was hurt they also didn't say that if the person would get into trouble

for doing it either sending snow on fire probably doesn't work anyway it doesn't work

although a few years ago someone posted a video of themselves using a flamethrower to clear their

driveway dressed as Eddie from Christmas vacation yeah that's I believe they did this during the

pandemic I thought it was kind of like the dinosaur thing where people were just trying to make

you know people laughed yeah in the pandemic and everything um

speaks in the movies people I I say this with every bit of love in my heart I love my fellow

Americans I love this country this is such an American story it's so us you're not we got to own

this everybody all right this is our people this is us if I told you I a person in the world

that tried to remove snow with a flamethrower tell me another part of the world you would

you're not going to say Zimbabwe you're not gonna you're not gonna this is us you're not

gonna say Canada no no not even Canada would do something like that I mean there are a million

countries I could have said I picked the one where there is no snow thank you Melissa thank you

for calling me out on that I need that need no no it needs to be called out there might be some

mountains that have snow on the top there might be I would like to also remind the audience I teach

improv for a limited geography not as strong suit I well that that ain't right man that ain't right

that that who even gets that in there huh snow removal fire hmm like who has that connection where

do you put well you know fire melts things you know I don't get a lot of lighted on fire though

you know to be fair when when is the opportunity to use a flamethrower in life you just don't

have a lot of opportunities you know you want to get your money's worth for good reason yeah

yeah it's a very good reason very good it's also very dangerous to to use gasoline oh god for

anything yeah it does very flammable knucklehead knucklehead don't you know I know it's not the most

fun but get out there shovel or use the snowblower or whatever right as a side tip I only bring

this up I am I am positive that there are thousands of people out there listening that know this

already but just in case those uh shovels the bent shovels oh my god I just started using those

last year oh my god those are amazing like nobody do what do they make tell me this better late

than ever I guess I suppose but man those things are a lifesaver I love those things

for 20 years they've been around like yeah yeah long time hey you guys hear about this thing called

water it's great um we do have actual news from our wood county of for parks and forestry

department uh wood county snow and veal trails are main closed at this time clubs are outgrooming

time uh gonna get some time in on those trails coming up yeah it'll be coming I've been really

uh having a drive to one uh go snow showing snow showing yeah wow I don't know why it just

of uh it seems like a James doesn't need snow shoes by the way no I don't I don't that's part
