Good morning, Wisconsin. Good morning, world. It's a new day. We hope it's treating you good.
Got your host James J behind the mic. I am joined by Melissa K. Good morning.
We're here to have some fun and get you ready for the new years. It's the last show of the new year.
And we're going to talk new years, of course. We've got some history out new years we want to
get into. Why do we drop the ball? Why do we kiss at midnight? Other random fun, weird facts will
get into. We're also going to try to help you with your new year's resolution. We've got some
tips on that and some helpful, hopefully some helpful. I don't want to say advice. I'm trying to
avoid the word advice. Yeah, there you go. We'll be doing that. Looking forward to it. We got all
those things going on along with, of course, it being a Friday show. We've got Misty's Menu,
Birthday and Anniversary Club. The star of the day featuring our friends from Wisconsin
Rapids callers. Well, it's some fun with those. All that coming up for you. Right now,
let's see if this works, Melissa. We want to kick off the show with our good friends from the
Weather Eye Weather Center, Mr. Paul Tromble. Are you there, Paul? Yes. Good morning. Yes. Good
morning, Paul. Yes, the phones are working. Yes, Paul. It's so good to hear from you. I'm so
sorry. All week we have been trying to, we've heard you, but we haven't been able to get in touch.
We haven't been able to communicate. How have you been all week, Paul? I've been doing okay.
Yeah. Yeah. First I figured maybe you guys are taking a break between Christmas and New Year's
or something. Yeah. Well, glad you could try. Yeah. Thank you for keeping on trying, Paul. We
appreciate you guys so much at the Weather Eye. What is Mother Nature Gun store for us this New Year's?
Yeah. Looks pretty quiet here headed into the holiday weekend and joined Sunshine
here for us here today on our Friday and that can help our temperatures up to about 41 for a high
this afternoon. Northwest winds 5 to 10. Clear tonight, 22 and then on Saturday.
Rakes of sun and some increasing clouds later in the day about 37 tomorrow in a little bit of
snow shower activity in the picture. Saturday night down to 25. You flurries,
snow shower and early Sunday, 33 and accumulations sustained less than an inch, some more of a coding
possibility for some of those amounts Saturday night. Early Sunday after that, 18 Sunday night,
partly sunny Monday, 32 and low to mid 30s, Tuesday and Wednesday with partly sunny skies in the mid
week as January comes in quite calm and fairly mild still into our area. Not bad, not bad. We can
take you bad at all. Yeah, that sounds alright. Paul, do you get any New Year's plans?
Ah, you know, just going on to nice dinner on Sunday evening. Yeah, very cool, you guys.
Yeah, kind of similar thing. I'm pretty low-key this year taking it a little easy. How about you,
Melissa? We're having a nice night in. Hmm. Sounds good. Sounds good. Cooking at home.
Paul, we just wanted to thank you and your team over there at the Weather Eye Weather Center. We
appreciate you guys so dang much. It's been wonderful talking and working with you.
Wishing you guys a very, very fun New Year's. Thanks, Cynthia. I think back at you guys too.
And I guess we'll talk probably on Tuesday next year. Yeah, yeah, that's the hope. We'll see how
that goes. If not, we'll talk sooner than later, okay? Okay. You take care, Paul. Thank you.
Best in the business right there. Our friends at the Weather Eye Weather Center appreciate them,
so dang much. Melissa, let's go ahead and dive into the show. We got good things lined up for
everybody. We should let everybody know a programming note here. I apologize that seemed a little
awkward with Paul because I was told that they knew this already. Maybe not. I guess we'll
I'll call and reach out to Paul and find out myself. I thought I was told a number of times that
they understood what was going on. So at the start of the New Year, we are going to be doing weather
a little bit differently here at WFHR and at Civic Media. We have our wonderful friend,
Brittany Merlot, who is going to be joining us on Tuesday to kick off our weather.
All right. It will be fun. Yeah, looking forward to it. Brittany is going to join us like Paul
does here at the 805 spot. She'll call in live and we'll talk with her. Get an update on what
Mother Nature has gotten store for us. Looking forward to that. And hear about our local weather,
but we definitely have very much appreciated talking to Paul and we'll miss him. I'll miss him.
I miss him already. I literally do. I miss him already. I have worked with that team over there
for many, many years. I love every person over there and have a lot of respect for them and
personally think that they're some of the best if not the best in the business. So really going to
miss working with them. Really looking forward to working with Brittany. I have not had a chance to
do that. I know that you have from time to time and you know, Brittany a little bit more and
it's going to be exciting. She's going to fit right in on the show. Oh, absolutely. She's fun.
She's got great personality. Nine o'clock hour. Got a lot of good things lined up for you.
Hopefully you're going to be able to check in. Boy, this this tongue of mine today, Melissa.
It is not working. We're going to be able to check in with my clements at the start of the
nine o'clock hour. Make sure that that hopefully that works. Phones are working and everything.
Otherwise, we'll get into a bunch of other fun stuff. I wanted to start here, Melissa first,
because we already got into what we're doing new years. We're both taking it easy, keeping it low
not a bad idea. In fact, that's I have not talked to one person this year that has plans for new years.
Like, yeah, I, I, I, I want to say at least 12 to 15 people I've talked to between students and
listeners and all that. Everybody say the same thing. Let's keep it at low key this year. This,
this isn't, you know, staying in that stuff. That's fine. More power to you. I'm sure there'll be
plenty going out, but oh, yeah. I actually spent a busy season. I kind of thought with the weather
being the way it was, it might get people to want to go out more. I, I don't know, but I know that
there is a couple out there that could really use a good New Year's Melissa. And that's where I want
to start our show. Oftentimes we like to start off our end our show with a then a write story. It's
something that we all kind of like laugh at and have some fun with. And you know, move on. We're going
to start today with possibly a that a write story. But I have to be honest journalistically with you
in the audience. There is a part of me that that that doesn't know what to do with this situation.
Should I should I be angry or should I get a give a golf clap? I'll get into the story. A North
Carolina couple woke up on Christmas morning to what they described as a terrifying scene.
They're three-year-old loudly requesting a pair of scissors. Disturbing on its own, okay? Yeah,
yeah. Scott and Katie Rennington's toddler secured an early preview to Christmas by waking up at
3 a.m. to unwrap his entire family's presence. Oh, no. Oh, no. The three-year-old,
quote, the three-year-old found his Spider-Man web shooters. And so he wanted scissors to cut them,
Scott Rennington said, who works as a science fiction and fantasy author. He said to this phone
interview on Tuesday morning, I think he's got to do a story here to go along with the fan.
I bet he wishes this was sci-fi. The couple has three children, ages six, three, and one.
Kate Rennington said her three-year-old son had unwrapped literally everything from the
tiniest eraser to the biggest box. The gifts had taken hours to wrap the night before.
The three-year-old whom Scott and Katie lovingly referred to as the midnight preparator,
explained to them that he unwrapped the presence because he didn't want his family to be confused.
Quote, he wanted us to be able to see our presence so we knew what they were. Scott
Rennington said, I think he legitimately just felt that he was doing a service to everyone.
He will not do it again next year we hope.
Kate Rennington added he is showing no remorse. None whatsoever.
At three, it's hard to show remorse.
The morning then became a mission for the Rennington's to save Christmas for their six-year-old son.
Their six-year-old didn't feel as great about this, a whole situation, but the family ended up
being able to make the most of it and have some fun with it and everything.
So it seemed like they had fun with this.
Yeah, hopefully they were able to wrap the six-year-old's presence before he woke up.
I have to say that the rebel, the mischievous part of me of my brain, there's a part of me that
just wants to just slow golf clap. Just well done, kid. Well done. Nicely done.
I've never heard of it. Don't try to get away with it again.
No, no, it's a one-type thing. It's a one-type thing and you have to be the under the age of five
to be able to get away with it. Those are the rules. But otherwise, I mean, not at all.
I'm guessing that our audience doesn't include a lot of under five-year-olds, maybe one or two out
there, ear muffs for this. I'm not encouraging this behavior by any means.
But God, God help me. There is a part of me that just admire this kid.
A lot of dedication. It really did. Every single present.
Just sitting there. And they probably were more than like six.
And he put them in order for the family. So he was kind of setting up this plaitum.
This one's for me. This one's for mom. I don't know if you did this in your family,
but it seems to be a tradition in many. If you're the oldest, like I was in mind, your job is to
get all the presents together and hand them out to your siblings and parents and everything.
So everybody's got their stuff. And then they start unwrapping.
Maybe he got one step down. Just forgot that second step.
No, we made a big production out of presents in my family. We one person would pick one and hand
it out. And that person would open it and everybody would watch. And then that person got to
pick a present and hand it out next. So we did them one at a time. So everybody got to see what
everybody got. It was very confused as I got older and attended other people's Christmases. And they
just everybody opened it once. It's like, what's going on? Okay, I'm overwhelmed. This is fine.
My family did the same separated the gifts and then did exactly what yours did.
And I don't know if it was that or not, but I was hanging out with my oldest daughter,
Bri, yesterday we were recording her pod and we exchanged Christmas gifts. And Bri asked me,
will you open yours? And she's looking at me when I'm there to open it and everything.
There's this. I've always felt a little uncomfortable with that.
I don't know why. I get very awkward and uncomfortable. You can put me on stage in front of
2,000 people and I'm perfectly fine. But my daughter's looking at me as a mobility
or Christmas gift. And it might as well have been 5,000 people staring at me.
Like it just is a lot of pressure than I supposed to look like you appreciate it or like it.
I never worry about that. I've never gotten a gift that I didn't appreciate. I can say that
wholeheartedly with my whole heart. I genuinely have always felt that way. If there is one
advantage of not getting a lot growing up, you find ways to appreciate everything. And I mean
everything. But the pressure I didn't feel, it felt very awkward. It felt very uncomfortable.
And I wonder if anybody else has ever felt that way or do feel that way when you're opening
gifts or not. 715-424-2600. The phone lines are working. Call up and join the conversation.
I mean obviously I'm weird. So I'm an outlier usually in most cases. I'm not expecting other
people to feel this way, but I'm curious. I was wondering, no one would throw it out there.
And wanted to let the audience know that not only are the phone lines open, but we expect a
hear from you today. You've had all week off. You've had a break. It's time to get to work.
Everybody will want you to call up and join the conversation and have some fun with us.
I'm going to give a huge shout out to Solaris for popping over and checking in on us yesterday.
Got a love and thank our local businesses. And I want everybody to give some empathy to Melissa.
It was not only had to work with me all week, but is thinking a little similar to me because
that's exactly where I wanted to go, Melissa. I wanted to wrap up this segment talking about
Solaris and thanking them. I got off the air yesterday and they were in studio in the house here
and hanging out with us and looking at what they could do to get things done and working with
our GM and our engineer Chuck on that. Our friends at Solaris did an amazing job working with our
team and really appreciate what they do here. They got a lot going on with them and there's always
issues with phones and internet. There's never a time where there isn't some kind of traction or
something going on. I think that the way we handled this on the air, given our job and given the
pressures put under that job by many, I think we treated them with respect and didn't throw anybody
under the bus while also being honest with our audience about what was going on. Appreciate Solaris
being able to do that with us. Looking forward to working with them more and more. We got Misty's
many birthday anniversary club right around the corner. Remember the phone lines are open 715-424-2600.
We want to hear from you everybody. Melissa and James taking you through your morning right here at
WFHR will be our locally grown radio. It's time to do some celebrate with our good friends at Misty's
menu. We encourage you to treat yourself when they open their doors again in the new year,
treat yourself and get on over to Misty's menu. At 9041, stay away 13 South and Wisconsin Rapids.
When you get there, thank you for wishing a great one for all of us at WFHR.
Yeah, happy new year. Little news from our friends at Misty's. Again,
just going to read this one more time from their Facebook post. They are excited but also a little
bit sad to announce that they will be closed now until the beginning of the new year for this break.
And when they open their doors again, not only will they be open all seven days a week,
yep, Wednesdays again, but they will also be under new ownership. Mike and Chrissy
will be the new owners of Misty's menu. Mike and Chrissy are a great couple with many, many years
of restaurant experience and they have complete confidence that they will carry on with they have
what the team has built there for 22 years. The restaurant name, menu, food and staff will remain
the same with some new and exciting things to come. To say that we will miss our Misty's
menu family and our wonderful customers is a huge understatement but we will most certainly be
around quite often. So you never know when we will show up. They want to thank the community.
I think everybody that has helped them continue to do business over there at Misty's and
really fulfill their dream and they appreciate everybody from the bottom of their hearts
that is from Misty and Brian who we greatly appreciate. Really put a lot into our community.
Been a part of things at WFHR here as long as there's been a Misty's menu. We really appreciate
the team over there. Yeah, looking forward to meeting the new owners. Yeah, I'd like to have them
in studio. I'd like to bring them in or something. I think that'd be fun. Let's dive into our birthdays
here, Melissa. We are not just celebrating Friday, Saturday and Sunday but we've also got to get in
Monday for New Year's Day. All right. That means you got to do a little bit heavy lifting, Melissa.
I'm going to have to do a pick some numbers here. I'm sorry. Okay. That enough I made you work
today but not going to make you work today. Just have to put up with me one more day.
Give me a one or two. Two. All right. And another one or two. One. All right. And another one or
two. One. Nicely done. Well played, Melissa. Let's dive right into the list. First up,
I want to wish happy birthday to Steph Lutz. Happy birthday, Steph. Steph is a long time friend of
my sister, Jillian's the pretty much best friends. I've been knowing each other since grade school
really. Her and her family. Wonderful people. We wish Steph a great birthday. Enjoy it, Steph.
Yeah. Our qualifier today, Jim Gretzoff. Oh, congratulations, Jim. And joy your day. Sorry,
you got a fine name there. We hope it's a good one for you. Enjoy your day, Mr. Gretzoff.
Happy birthday. We move on to Saturday and celebrating their 23rd anniversary, Chuck and Carol
One Row Brody. Oh, congratulations, Chuck and Carol. Wishing you the best of days. Hope it's a
great one for you. Also, our qualifier celebrating their 34th anniversary. Less in Gene Elmer.
Less in Gene. Happy anniversary. Congratulations.
Happy anniversary to you all. I hope it's a great one for you. I think there's some kind of
romantic and fun about getting married near new years. That seems like a good idea. I don't know.
I like that. Well done, you guys. And a very happy anniversary to both couples there, and especially
to our 34th, that's in Gene. They are qualifiers for Saturday. Moving on to Sunday, where we wish
a happy birthday to Marcy Bucope. Happy birthday, Marcy. Enjoy your day, Marcy. We hope it's a
fantastic one for you. And our qualifier for Sunday, December 31st, celebrating their second
birthday. Luna Louise Rainy. Happy birthday, Luna. Luna Louise Rainy, that is easily like one of
the most beautiful names I've ever heard. Happy second birthday. Wishing you a great one.
Two is so much fun. And that's a girl. Yeah. Yeah. A lot of ways. A lot of levels.
I always feel for people that have birthdays around holidays, especially Christmas.
They seem like they have to share with the holiday and that kind of thing. But New Year's
completely different story. I think it'd be kind of cool to have your birthday right on New Year's Eve
or New Year's Day or something like that. Something about it seems cool to me. I don't know.
It may be Luna could tell us differently. I don't know, baby. We can ask her in about 10 years.
Yeah. Yeah. We'll get her on. We'll ask her then. And I wish her a happy second birthday.
Happy second birthday, Luna. And on Monday, January 1st, we wish happy birthday to former program
director Greg Gack. Happy birthday, Greg. I've missed Greg. Greg's a great guy. Greg was my first
program director here at WFHR. There are at least 20,000 things I could tell you that I learned from
Greg. Also, I've never seen a person be able to smoke a cigarette faster in my life.
No, no, two puffs. Two puffs in that man can put down a whole cigarette like commercial break.
He dragged me outside. James, come out here. We'd be outside of the old building. Greg would have
like a minute to smoke that cigarette and he had 30 seconds to spare. Wow.
I don't know if I'm oppressed or impulsed. I don't know either. I don't either. But I'll tell you,
he's this is one of the best people I've ever worked with in this business. And many of our
listeners out there, remember Mr. Greg Gack, a big hockey fan and just one of our favorite
voices and personalities here at WFHR over the years. Happy birthday, Greg.
I want to wish a happy birthday to Pam's cousin, Dennis Eskritt. Dennis grew up in Wisconsin
rabbits, lives in Cape Coral over there. His father Edwin Eskritt also had a January first
birthday. Happy birthday, gentlemen. Yeah. And we wish a very happy birthday to our
qualifier on Monday, January 1st, New Year's Day, Kelly Becker. Oh, congratulations, Kelly,
happy birthday. Hope you it's a great one for you, Kelly. Enjoy your day. We take a look at
our celebrity birthdays for today. And yeah, I'm going to be honest, it's a thin list.
Jude Law celebrating a birthday, happy 50th birthday to Jude Law. A lot of great movies with
Jude Law. Man, you ain't kidn't great actor. Fantastic actor. One of those guys too that really
has taken a hold of his career kind of let early in his career let agents kind of tell him what to do.
And it almost got him over over saturated the market with Jude Law. Like there was a time
where when he first made his break every month he had a movie coming out because he was as an actor
who's been waiting for that break, you're going to say yes to just about everything. That's where
you're agent and other people need to come in and kind of help you with that because you can
over saturate an audience with people other than other unless your name is Samuel Jackson,
other than him. Nobody else in human history has been able to get away with it.
Jude Law took a hold of his career and you see the choices he has made since then all very smart
and just keeps growing as an actor. Very good. Arguably the best soccer player in the,
one of the best soccer players in the world, Ethan Moppie is 16. Already growing as a star around
the world. French soccer player. Yeah, he's good. Alison Brie is 40. Fantastic actress. She's
very versatile. A lot of people would remember her from the TV show community. She was really good
on there. Yeah, she's good. Happy 75th birthday to Ted Danson. Ted Danson.
One of the best TV actors of all time. Just an incredible career when you look at what he's
done on TV. He said at least three or four hit TV shows over multiple decades.
Cheers, obviously. One of my favorite scenes that Ted Danson ever did. It was in cheers. And
Sam Malone was one of those guys that a lot of kids liked and looked, I don't want to say
looked up to, but enjoyed and thought was funny and everything. And a lot of Sam's character was
tied to his hair. And there's a scene, I think it's the last season where he, at some point,
he takes the hair off and it's a two pay. And Ted Danson just talked about this in interviews
later on and everything that this was something as an actor that really held him back. They really
bothered him after that scene. He just started to grow his own hair out and you see him now.
He's got this great hair. He had a hair that silver fox. Ted looks great. And he's married to
Mary Steamberg. And I mean, come on. That just catches the century. It really is. That seems
like one of those couples you just want to have coffee with. You don't even have to talk. Just
let me sit here at the table with you guys while you have your conversation. I'm just going to be
a fly on the wall. And of course, most recently, I loved him in the good place. That was a fabulous
show. He's such a, it's such a cool thing to look at actors like him or the fans, Henry Winkler,
actors that for one generation, like Henry Winkler, for one generation, he's the coolest guy in
the world, he's the fans. Another generation, he's all these side characters and Adam Sandler movies.
He's funny and silly and all that. Ted Danson is cheers. He's Sam Malone, former baseball player,
bartender or owner, a woman's man, you know, all these things. You can go to the good.
He's seen investigator and CSI. Yes, yes. And then he goes, he doesn't, and his next big hit,
the good place, which another generation knows him from. And he's that character who's almost
complete opposite of Sam Malone. It's just kind of unique and kind of cool. You'll get to plan
these things out as an actor. It's pretty awesome when it happens for that. Diego Luna is 43 today.
A lot of people know him from Rogue One or in the TV show Andor. One of the better actors I've
ever seen. He is incredible. Fantastic actor. Let's see here. Some people no longer with us.
Like former president Andrew Johnson born in this day in 1808, passed away in 1875.
And the great, the wonderful, the legend Mary Tyler Moore born in this day in 1936, passed away in
2017. If anybody has a hat on right now, go ahead and throw it up in the air. Throw it up in the
air and honor Mary Tyler. One of the first faces of TV, one of the first, you know, lead female voices
on TV kind of picking up the mantle from Lucille Ball and many others that you know that she
she not only came before her, but there was nobody really doing a lot of women's suffrage talk.
There was a lot of whole, a lot of seeing a lot of women in positions like she was on that TV show.
The fish out of water thing that was a little bit new at the time. There was so many things about
the Mary Tyler Moore show that stand out and that really to this day, people use as a blueprint for
TV. Mm hmm. Well, and one of the, you know, early women producers. Mm hmm. Yep.
You will go back and watch in that show and you'll see her name in the producing credits.
And that is a, not only awesome, but that is a compliment to our, it's a preview, a pred, a
pre-assip to where we are now with acting. Jude Law, any of these big name actors that we just
talked about or anytime we talk about them. Nine out of 10 of them, you are going to see their names
executive producer or EP or something or at least in a producer on a movie or a TV show that
gives them a seat at the table, that gives them an opportunity to talk to be able to have a,
you know, some take in the conversation. Yeah. Yeah. It goes a long way. So a lot of that starts with
a Mary Tyler Moore and actors like her Lucille Ball, other actors and the pave the way for that.
We are going to get out of here on that. We'll get into our state and local news. We'll come back
and have a bunch of fun with you. We got to talk about this time ball. I want to talk about
the time ball. I want to talk about why we kiss at midnight on New Year's. Plenty more coming
up for you on the morning show here at WFHR where we are locally grown radio.
Lights, camera, action. It is time to make somebody a star the day with our friends from the Wisconsin
Rapids callvers. What Melissa and I are about to do is play a famous TV show theme song. You call
up 715 or 242600. Get the answer right and you haven't won anything in 30 days. Boom, just like
that. You're going to win yourself a family pack of four from our Wisconsin Rapids callvers.
We have three callvers. That is the best part of callver. The only kind of, there's nothing
better than callvers than free callers. So we're looking forward to giving that to you. This family
pack of four includes two adult meals, two kids meals. That is a meal you don't have to cover.
That's right or two or three depending on how many are in your family. Yeah, yeah.
So get ready to call up everybody 715-424-2600-424-2600. Tell us what TV show this is from.
Let's see if we have ourselves a winner. Good morning. What's your answer?
Honeymooners. Yeah. Nicely done. Nicely done. Oh, that was good. Did you know that one right away?
No, my old husband knew that. That's a little bit of a tougher one. It's a bit of an older one.
So I wasn't sure. I wasn't sure. What's your name, miss? Sandy.
Sandy, thank you so much for listening and playing a log. We really appreciate that.
You're our newest star of the day, Sandy. Okay. I hope you share the callvers with your husband.
Yes, we sure hope you can share with him. We need you to hang on the line, get a little
information from you off air. But Sandy, thank you so much for listening and playing along.
We appreciate you wishing you a good New Year's. Thank you. Thank you. We're going to talk to Sandy
in a moment. I was looking for there is like no like New Year's TV show or movie or anything like
that that we could really do to celebrate that. So I was just kind of looking for old school shows
and something fun to kind of bring us into the New Year. The Honeymooners is one of the most classic
TV themes songs of all time. The Honeymooners aired only from 55 to 56. Only lasted for a year,
but one more iconic TV shows of all time. Jackie Gleason, Audrey Meadows, Art Carney,
Joyce Randolph, Pert Carlton, I think it is such a cast, one of the best cast in TV history too.
That was a lot of fun. Thanks, Sandy. We appreciate that. Thanks for playing along.
And a big thank you to our Wisconsin Rapids callvers. We appreciate the gang over callvers so much
but working with us all year long, looking forward to another year of star of the day.
Be listening next Friday for another opportunity. Absolutely.
Take a break. We'll talk to Sandy. We'll come back and have some more fun on the
morning show here at WFHR, locally grown radio.
Welcome back everyone. Morning show here at WFHR. Melissa and James hanging out with you.
Hope you're having a great Friday out there. Happy New Year's Eve weekend, everybody.
It's got one of the more original voices I think I've ever heard.
Alana Smores said the way that she sings. They really is.
Yeah, the way. I'm gonna mistake it.
Oh, no, you really can't. Let's go ahead and take a phone call and listen to kick off the segment.
Good morning. What's on your mind?
Well, I just wanted to say happy holidays and happy New Year, guys.
Hey, happy New Year, man. Happy New Year.
Without the snow, I was having a hard time getting in the Christmas spirit because I hadn't
heard the WFHR jingle until just before your last segment.
Oh, it's a classic. It's a classic. You got to get it. You got to get it then.
I'm glad you heard about it. I really like your Christmas programming, but I was going to ask you
what you're going to have for the New Year's Eve, New Year's Day programming with you guys
having your well-deserved day off. When I say we have the best listeners and radio
this is why. These are the reasons why. They teased us up. They set us up perfectly.
We're going to get into our New Year's Day. What we're going to be doing in New Year's
Day programming wise here. Got some really good stuff for you lined up.
And we'll get into that next hour. Well, we got that coming for you. All right.
Cool. All right. Well, have a happy New Year and be safe, everybody.
Who knows what the weather is going to be like. That's true.
You too, brother. Be safe. Happy New Year. Happy New Year to you and yours.
That was great. Great call. Good call. Keep those calls coming. I'm going to be honest.
Just feels good to take calls too. It does. I want to get into this one, Melissa.
One of the bigger traditions, of course, for New Year's is the dropping of the New Year's Eve ball.
It's been around longer than we've been alive. It's a long time tradition. But I was kind of
curious where that came from. And I was diving into this and I actually went down a whole other
rabbit hole from it and came across this thing called the time ball. A time ball is a time-signal
device. It consists of a large painted wooden or metal ball that is dropped at a predetermined
time. Where did this come from, though? A young officer in the Royal Navy suggested a time ball.
The ball would be dropped from a high point in a specific time. Navigators aboard the ship
could observe the drop by telescope and use the time to set their chronometers. The first time ball
was dropped in Port Smith in 1829. Wow. This was the precursor to our New Year's Eve ball.
This influenced that. That's where the history of the New Year's Eve ball comes from. It comes
from our Mary time. It comes from our Navy. It has history in our US military.
Right. And then the fact of the ball dropping signaling a time change or the change of time,
that's very symbolic. I did not know that. It's kind of cool, isn't it? I just thought it was kind
of interesting. It's the interesting piece of history right there that I had never heard before.
It has somebody who like cannot help himself and goes down the like tons and tons of rabbit holes
almost every day. I'm a little surprised I didn't know that one. That was an interesting one.
What about kissing somebody on New Year's? The clock strikes midnight and you're
look kissing someone or if you like me in my early 20s looking for someone to kiss.
Standing in the bar and literally being the one person with like a looking around like okay,
that's it. There is nobody there. It was rough. It was a tough 23rd birthday or that 23rd
year. So where does this come from? If you have ever wondered why people kiss at midnight on New
Year's Eve, according to English and German folklore, the first person you encounter in a new year
and the nature of this encounter, sets the tone for the rest of the year. A kiss is about
strengthening ties you wish to maintain in the future. In other countries where we're not that
aren't as you know caught up in machismo or you know so many other things and everything,
it is not uncommon for men to kiss each other on the cheek on New Year's. It is not uncommon
for women to do this as well, along with you kissing your significant other.
Right. It's kind of an interesting that you said it has to do with setting up how those
relationships are going to be for the next year. It's kind of cool how so many of these traditions
are like that or do that where we're trying to welcome in good things for the New Year,
warding off evil spirits from the past or current ones. Yeah. I don't know and I want to open
this up. I did this on Sunrise Show. We'll do it here too. 424, 2600. What are your New Year's
traditions? What do you guys like to do on New Year's? Keep in mind we are a PG-13 show.
Yes. Keep it radio friendly. Yeah. But otherwise I'd love to hear from you always and we loved
know what your traditions are. Traditions or superstitions? Yes. Yes. Well said. Yes.
Absolutely. All the above. Because if you don't kiss your significant other on New Year's,
what does that mean to you? That's interesting. Oh, I like where you went there. Nice.
When we come back, we're taking a nap. Well, not technically. No. Melissa can if she wants.
She's earned that. You've earned a lot more than that, Melissa. But we're going to talk
naps when we come back. Great. Naps are wonderful. Melissa and James take any
through your morning on WFHR. We are locally grown radio.
Welcome back everyone. Morning show here at WFHR.
Melissa and James hanging out with you. Little Sir Paul to play us in.
We fade him down as he fades that song away. We have a good show lined up for you.
And a bunch of great things kicking off in the nine o'clock hour. It doesn't look like we're
going to be able to talk with Mike Clements. So Melissa and I are going to hang out with you and talk
a little entertainment. I've got for you. Are you talking sports, James? I know. I knew you were going
to be disappointed. I'm sorry. I should have let you down easier. I was I was all ready to talk
about my favorite sport games. You know, as much as I love those conversations, we're going to
have to just wait until next Friday to talk with our good friend Mike Clements. We do appreciate
Mike. Wish him a great new year. Really appreciate Mike being able to join us lately.
Last couple months, it's been a lot of fun talking with him. Yes, it has. Someone who actually
knows sports, not me. Let's dive into this. Young people claim they are not lazy, but this
poll might might not say that they are lazy, but it may add to how they are handling their days.
Someone asked 12,000 Americans. That's a pretty nice number right there. I like these surveys that
have that high number to them. 12,000 Americans. They asked them how often they take naps.
And 25% said that a few times a week, that was the most common answer. 13% 13% of us never nap.
Once a day was next at 19% another 6% said that they usually take multiple naps a day.
But here's the interesting part. You'd expect the multiple nap crowd to be mostly, you know,
older crowd or maybe retired people. But the top age group that was that takes more than one
nap a day is actually people in their 20s. 11% of Americans under 30 said they nap multiple times
a day. That's one in nine compared to just one in 25. And a third of those young people said that
they wish they could take even more naps than they already do. Join the club. The poll also asked
for the quote ideal length of a perfect nap. 20 to 30 minutes was the top answer followed by an
hour. 13% said two hours. And young people were most likely to say two plus hours is ideal.
Anything over an hour is more you're not napping. You're going to sleep.
Like I'm sorry. If it is over an hour, it is not you're not taking a quick, you know, cat nap.
You're resting. You're sleeping. Your body is going into REM. But I do want to say real quick
that I joke about this a lot. I actually mean this. I really don't feel like I have a like to
stand on in this conversation. I don't nap. I wish I could. I'd like to. I try to when I
very seldomly have the opportunity. But I just am very bad at this. I really do need to take
a class at mid state or something like that and napping 101 or something like that. So I want to
back off and let you get on this, Melissa. Maybe do a sleep study James. I've done that. I did that
in college. I did. I actually got kicked out. Maybe you should do it again. Yeah. Yeah. That's a good
point. Yes. Yes. Yeah. I agree that a nap that is over an hour. Your and science backs you
up on that. It's a different kind of sleep that your body goes into versus the quick, you know,
20 to less than 40 minute nap. You wake up feeling more refreshed from that type of nap. If you take,
if you sleep over an hour, you fall into the deeper REM sleep. You wake up feeling more tired
or, you know, not rested because your your body was expecting more. And then you kind of,
you know, if you break something up mid cycle, bad things happen. Not bad things, but not necessarily
the outcome you wished for. Yeah. I'm curious why why are younger people taking more naps?
That is interesting to me. Well, I think that in your 20, in your 20s, your body is still growing.
You're not done yet, especially guys. I think you don't stop growing until you're what,
23, 25, something like that. So that could be a good reason. They could still be, I thought you
were going to include like, I don't know, 15 year olds. Because how many of high schoolers
tried it to sneak in a few naps during the school day. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
I mean, Kelvin taught us to take a ping pong ball. You cut it in half. Black sharpie dry high balls
on it. And you just stick them in there. They can't tell the difference. Can't tell the difference.
It's a it's a it's a perfect crime. It's a wide way.
I will admit that I I tried to nap some in school, but didn't always didn't ever actually.
It didn't ever work out, but I like naps with your sleep schedule. Do you have the opportunity
to even take naps, Melissa and your day to day? Yeah. I do here and there. It depends on the day.
And what I'm doing, because sometimes I end up working late into the evening. And then,
you know, if I only get five or six hours of sleep, that's not enough for me. My body prefers
more like nine. If I don't get nine hours of sleep in the night, I'm I'm kind of tanked
during the next day. Yeah. So I need that 20, 30 minute nap. Should I usually take on my lunch break?
Well, good. Yeah. That's in that the crux of all of what we're talking about here about work
and balance. You put it in. Yeah. Yeah. That kind of thing. You would you should be probably
eating or something, but of course, you got to take that nap if you can get it. You got to take
it fitted in where you can. The idea of younger people doing this more than older people,
I think is somewhat interesting, but it also part of the thing that I think that it holds this
up, this study, is we don't really have data like this kind of data for when you and I were
teenagers or when our parents were teenagers, that kind of thing. We don't know. They're saying that
you know, young people, people in the 20s want to take more naps or are taking more naps,
but we don't really have the data to say that we were doing that more now than we were before
or anything. This may have always been the case. Hmm. Could be. And there's science too to back up
why older adults maybe take less naps, energy levels decline, metabolism and hormone production
changes so that maybe you need fewer hours of sleep than when you were younger. I don't know
anything about naps, but I do. I have studied sleep quite a bit for over 20 some years. It's one of
those things that I feel I know pretty well, including some of the more far-fetched things that
come from sleep like people, the longest a person, you know, the longest somebody's ever stayed awake.
Six days. Ouch. Yeah, yeah. Man, the deprivation can do really weird things to your brain.
Yes, you can. Yes, definitely can. Yes. I could promise you that. I can guarantee that.
Let's take a callers. We're getting ready to go to the top of the hour and break.
Good morning. You're on the show. What's on your mind?
Good morning. Happy New Year. Happy New Year.
Well, you know, the nap thing. It's good to take a nap, but if I feel five big guys, I guess I think
I get a 20-minute morning afternoon, I feel worse. Yeah. See? Yeah. That's why they don't.
I mean, if I get that hour, I guess I'm happy, but I don't remember what I don't take
I rather than just for when I wasn't feeling well, I don't think I'm going to get so many years to go that
I did think that. Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't sound like you were ever much of a napper.
Not really. I mean, I get sick because I sometimes get felt worse when I woke up. Yeah. Yeah.
That's the boat that I'm in a lot of the time and I couldn't. Honestly, I couldn't
I tell you the last time I took a nap, but I do. I can tell you the last time I did, I woke up and
I felt crummy. I mean, I think that's each their own. Everybody's a little different with that.
That could have to do with a lot of factors. Maybe I didn't rest long enough. Maybe I rested too long
who knows everybody. So Kevin, you need more than an hour.
It's what you're saying. Yeah. Kevin, do you think you need more than an hour? Is that it?
I mean, if I go over an hour, well, I'm in trouble at night. There's no way I'm going to go to sleep,
but I want to go to sleep. Yeah. Yeah. So I try to keep
no more than an hour. Usually if I'm just, if my youngest one is home,
I assume don't let me go over an hour or I'll try to make sure I set my alarm on my phone
to make sure that that's all I get. You know, if I be satisfied, if I'm tired,
and obviously when I do say to math, and sometimes if I'm out,
do your hunting, and I'm getting up early in the morning, that nice fresh air is out.
I'll fall asleep in the tweets day. I want to know why.
Just don't fall out. Yeah. Yeah. We appreciate you, man. Thanks a lot for the call,
wishing you and yours of great new years. You're two and I appreciate everyone.
You as well, bro. Happy new year. Appreciate you. Appreciate you all. Thanks so much, everybody.
Looking forward to taking some more calls next hour. Melissa and I will dive into a little bit of
entertainment. We're also getting into facts about new years and things, ways to different random
facts about New Year's Eve. And I want to get into tips on ways to help people with their
New Year's resolutions. Got all right. All of that coming up for you right here. Melissa and James,
taking you through your Friday New Year's Eve edition of The Morning Show here at WFHR.
