in the 9 o'clock hour, there's two big ones I want to get into with you Melissa. First, we've got a great local goods story of the day was
cons and wise going on. Excellent. And we're traditions from around the world is new years. We're new years traditions. Oh, we're going to have some fun with that one. Not
making resolutions. Okay. All of that coming up for you. We want to start our show though with, of course, with the loss of a legend in the state. Herbert H. Cole
passed away yesterday. Herb was born on February 7th and 1935 was an American businessman philanthropist and democratic politician from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Cole was born and raised in Milwaukee, the son of Mary Neha, Neha, and Max Cole. His father was a Polish Jewish immigrant. And his mother was a Russian Jewish immigrant, intended Washington high school. Mr.
Cole served for 24 years as United States Senator for Wisconsin from 1969 to 2013. And earlier served as chairman of the democratic party of Wisconsin.
Alongside with his brother and father, he was a founder of Cole's department store chains of which he went on to become president and chief executive officer.
I did not know that. Yeah. I didn't know that. That's cool. He purchased the Milwaukee Bucks professional basketball team in 1985 to prevent the team from relocating
out of Milwaukee story that is kind of we've I think we've kind of lost over the years. Yeah. He is also huge. He's also the namesake of the Cole Center arena on the university of Wisconsin
Madison campus. I would like to think that when Wisconsinites are talking about people that they are proud of from this state, people that they are that they love to
champion. You guys have heard me on the radio a billion times talk about locals and which of a home where I am about people from my neck of the woods and everything. I
imagine that Wisconsinites are very similar. The ones that I know the ones the friends that I had sure are. I would think her Cole is one of the biggest names you bring up when you're talking about proud of Wisconsinites.
People you're proud of from this state and not only Mr. Cole, but his whole family. Really when you think of the what his family accomplished and did in this country as immigrants.
And then would you think about what that man accomplished if I gave you just one of those things on her calls list. The cold center or I mean the cold department store or buying the
Milwaukee Bucks and being a senator any just one of those things and I would stand on that statement let alone you combine all of that into one amazing life.
You know, and this is sad because I didn't know the history of and I have not paid any attention to his involvement in politics because it kind of predates my involvement in politics right on.
I mean, I knew the name, but that it honestly does make me feel a whole lot better about shopping at Coles.
You know, if I've got a pick between Coles or Target, it's going to be Coles every time then I and I'm with those are my two stores too. I've gone to Coles almost as long as we've lived out here. My mom loves that place and I think that there's there's a lot to be said with like how they have survived and stayed around to a lot of department sources just not making it nowadays.
Right. Coles just continues to survive. I don't and I don't know always how they do it because the prices sometimes are their close.
Like, is that really what you charge how can I be paying $11.99 for leggings?
Yeah, seriously, and you can't see through them when you bend over. That is an important detail. Oh, my goodness. So important.
How is that not that should that should be a given that you know, well, it's not.
Dang, I walked through Walmart sometime. Apparently. Yeah. Yeah, he's in a just in and keep in mind too. Well, I'm talking about all this.
His politics and what he voted for and things he build the bills that he pushed forward or anything like that.
I'm not talking about any of that. That's all a whole other subject and whole other conversation, which I wouldn't mind getting into or anything.
But just in the frame of this segment and this conversation, looking at the good things that he has done for this state as a whole are very, very not worthy.
Yeah, and his legacy that's going to continue. We have the Milwaukee Bucks still in this state because of him.
We have a championship because of him. In my opinion, the most exciting player in basketball last five, six years has been playing here.
Let alone all the other great moments that that arena has brought to this area.
There's a lot of things that you can talk about, Mr. Cole. Encourage you to read up on him too if you don't know.
I definitely will be because I'm interested now and I'm, you know, I mean, he lived to 88. That's a good long line.
I, you know, me Melissa, I like to, if we're going to start our show with something like that, you know, I want to wrap up with some funny.
I want to try to make you smile a little bit. That's what we do around here, serious comedy. We try to be a positive start to your day.

Grandparents messed up and bought the family 70 years worth of Disney plus instead of a trip to the theme park.
Oh, no, I saw this headline, but I didn't like the story. This is so sad.
And as I was mentioning before, as a homer, being, you know, being proud of Chicago and all those things, I was a little hesitant to do this story.
And we don't usually do that at right stories this early, but I got it because it's about a family from Illinois.
Oh, yeah, an Illinois family mistakenly bought $10,000 worth of Disney plus gift cards, thinking they were the theme for the theme park.
Oh, man.
In a series of TikTok videos, Andy Colston explained her family's vacation mix up and asked for advice.
I, I, I, and I love the idea. 70 years.
I'm not even sure. I mean, Disney will be around. I'm not sure of Disney plus. What it'll be there.
Well, unfortunately, that number is probably going to tick down as time goes on because the price is going to go up.
Right, right. I love the idea to, and I can feel a little of this as a, it didn't have as a grandparent, but as a parent, knocking on what about the grandparent park.
You know, you do something for your kid or something like that and it feels so good.
And when you're walking out of the store or you're, you're closing your laptop, you're like, yeah, yeah, I feel good about that.
Like you almost made it yourself or something. And then something like this happens.
Epic fail.
I, I ordered this gift from my daughter for Christmas and I was so excited and it was handmade and all this thing.
And I, and then I get to the order, I order, I push it through January 2nd.
It was one of those things where I just, I didn't see that ahead of time. I was so excited to order it.
You were supposed to put your orders in before Mary's water broke.
It was right, right. Yes. Yes. I got to remember that next year.
That mean, that mean made me laugh quite a bit this year.
It's pretty good. Probably more than it should have.
The part of it, one of the, one of the, my favorite parts of this story, though, is
thankfully Disney has reached out and helped resolve the problem.
Oh, good.
Coast and told business insider.
That's good. They, they should have. And I'm glad they did because if they didn't, that would be a horrible PR for them.
Yeah. Yeah. I got $10,000. That's a lot of money.
They, the video is assumed 3.1 million views.
And it's just, it's a, even knowing the story, it's still worth watching.
It's still pretty dark. Good.
The, that's over 70 years of Disney Plus, she said, an overlaying video caption.
A premium ad-free Disney Plus subscription costs $139 a year.
That is insane.
But they, the coast and the initial video blew up all the comments and somebody from Disney happened to see it
and pass it along the chain.
And that's how that got taken care of.
But that's good. I mean, I don't think, I think with, I don't, I take shots at Disney all the time.
I will be the first to say that is a wonderful move by them.
And as you touched on Melissa, you can't put a price tag on that PR.
No, no. And I wonder, though, I follow up questions, as always, James.
Did they try to contact Disney themselves and resolve it and, and get turned down?
Sorry, your purchase has been made. And, you know, I'm speculating here, obviously.
But did it only get changed because it got passed up the chain through social media?
Or did they try to resolve it themselves?
My brain says that yes. That's the only reason it did, it did give resolve.
Well, and that is one of the great things about, you know, one of the benefits amidst the very
much negatives of social media. It is a way for us to put pressure on those kind of,
those giant corporations and companies with, you know, besides just our dollar of physically going
and saying, well, if Disney doesn't do something about this, this is awful.
And millions of people joining in and going, yeah, not okay.
I didn't plan on this, but you bring up a point that actually I think it's close to home for us,
because I had Lance Plymouth Wood County Board Chairman on yesterday with Midday magazine.
And Lance and I were talking about, of course, the mill here in town.
I've got to bring it up. It's something our audience wants to hear and wants to know.
Even though I know whether it's talking to him or Mayor Blazer,
there probably hasn't been any change or anything like that, but we got to talk about it.
Yeah, it's important to keep the conversation going.
One of the things I has to lance, I've been really curious about, and I would really like to get
public opinion on, is if we should be doing something like that with this mills, the company of
this mill and putting them under public pressure more, I don't know if it do any good. I don't know
if it change anything. I don't know if they care. They're company, not an American company.
Am I not even here? You know, the noise going on or anything, but isn't it worth a shot?
Isn't it worth trying? I don't believe that it's really, really important in life to not burn
bridges, even when it's an enemy. You just never know that enemy may end up being an ally.
You just don't know how things go. But in certain situations, I mean, it's already scorched
earth, our relationship with this company. It's going to be worse. I mean, they already don't give
a dang about us. They've proven that. They've proven they don't care about this community.
They've proven all they wanted to do was suck the energy, the money, and the people out of it.
Now they're done. Now they're done with that. There's no money in it for them, but this isn't
the only mill they've bought. I wonder if joining up with the other mills they've bought,
having conversations between communities. It's been years. We've lost people in this community
to move away from it. We've got people who are unemployed because of it. It just continues to
be a problem every single day as we go for it. And they don't feel any pressure. Buildings and
equipment don't get younger. Yeah. Yeah. So I mean, they don't they don't have any need to they
don't have any push to do this. They have no incentive to do. They're just sitting waiting for
the biggest buy. They will sell it once they get the money, the price tag they want for it,
which they are never going to get more than likely. Well, because it's not getting any, you know,
less old. How many times in your life have you wanted to buy a vehicle that you didn't you didn't
try first. They didn't drive. There wasn't. So why why what interest do you have in buying it
something if it's not being operated? It's not being used. It doesn't. You got to keep it
operation. Nicely done. This family. Good on them for doing that, but I love the idea of them
going immediately out. If they just didn't work out, if Disney didn't reach out to them,
immediately going to eBay or you know what, you know, in this family for the next 10 years,
all you're getting for Christmas, if you're a family member is Disney plus gift cards. All they
would have had to do is put up some videos of their little grandkids getting told that instead
of going to the theme park. Yeah. Yeah. They're going to get to give their grandchildren
Disney plus subscriptions, which they already had. Oh, that's that's right. Yeah. Yeah. I don't
want to be in that room. I want to be in that room. We're going to take a break. We're

watch actors like Helen Mirren and some of these actors that we get to know later in life,
you see them young and you're like, oh, they were always talented. Like sometimes actors grow and
just get better with age or whatever. Then there's actors where, okay, they were always good.
They just needed a break. Oh, she was in sister acts too. Oh, that's right. She was. Yeah,
I forgot about that. Or at least the second one. I don't know about the first year. Yeah. Yeah.
And with people no longer with us, former US president Woodrow Wilson born in this day in 1856,
passed away in 1924. 20th president of the United States, governor of New Jersey, president
of Princeton University, before he was elected to the presidency. He worked as an attorney in
Atlanta, Georgia. And his reelection campaign was founded on the fact that he had kept the United
States out of World War I. He was best known for coming up with the League of Nations, despite the
fact that his country refused to be a part of it. Yeah, interesting men, interesting men like,
any president, really, I think is quite an interesting history to them. That is going to
do it for our birthdays and anniversaries, but we want to wish a very happy birthday to Ron and

three names and those were the punchlines. One of the funniest bits I've ever seen I thought. I
thought it was a very funny create a bit. That's what I feel like I just did there. I just gave you
three things that really do not seem to like go together, but okay. Here's a rundown of the top
searches in the US. The top news topics we Googled were the War in Israel and Gaza, the Titanic submarine,
Hurricane Hillary, Hurricane Idleia, and Hurricane Lee. The next five were the main shooting,
the Nashville shooting, the Maui fire, the Idaho murder trial, and the Canada wildfires.
That Titanic submarine, I've almost forgotten about that. The one that imploded.
Yeah, that had our cat. That had all of our attention for it. Yeah, because I went missing for
so many days before they figured out what happened. And the Canadian fires. That doesn't feel like
it was that long ago at all, but in some ways it feels like it was. Well, yeah, with the
smoke cover and whatnot, because those happen every year. But they were definitely we felt the
effects of them this year far more than we usually do. Let's hope one day we have one of these
conversations and we don't have a shooting that comes up, let alone multiple ones.

looks like a buckle on. Yeah, yeah, those are some ugly shoes. I'm sorry. They don't even look
like a real shoe. No, no, I know I'm pretty sure it was a play on it. I think that they added that.

go Christmas shopping? You're not supposed to wait till then. But, you know, it is kind of a funny
trope that people get picked on for waiting to the last minute to go shopping. Yeah. But it happens.

One of the things that I like about this list already is the combination of some older things
being incorporated with some of this newer stuff. Yeah. He can't hear us. I thought I'd give this

but we will talk about quality plus in the end of the segment here. The top how often searches.
Like how often do you think about the Roman Empire? Or how often is the world baseball classic?
How often is the blue moon? How often is the world cup? And how often do trains derail?
Well, there's been quite a bit of that in the last year with some pretty big follow
with trains derailing. But going back to moons, aren't we in a full moon right now?

Oh, in the near term, the Groundhog's accuracy rate is slightly better according to the national
oceanic and astropharmic administration. Phil has been right about 40% of the time on average,
over the past decade. Hmm. Not bad average. Not bad. He's getting better. Yeah.

served. Good stuff though. I know. I didn't know it was called that. I've had it, but I didn't
know it was called that. Yeah. It almost looks like a cake brownie, but since there's rum in it,
I'll let it slide. Nice. This is always an interesting thing that you get to the end of the year.
You're looking at your own life. You're looking at the world and the different things and issues
and stuff that came up. I think it's a fun part of life. It's also something that I find brings us
closer together because so many people are doing it right now and kind of brings us all like,
well, we made it through that one. We're in collective sigh. Well, and there was a lot that
happened in this last year. I mean, with all of the natural disasters, the fires and the hurricanes
and the train derailments, which is not a natural disaster, but caused a disaster in several areas
of our country. I believe it was. Maybe it was Canada. I believe it was Canada. It was doing
their year-end interview and the biggest story, one of the biggest, the Canadian wildfires,
certainly, but the next biggest story was a school shooting, a shooting that they had there.
It doesn't even touch our top 50 here. We've normalized it so much. Well, because it happened so
often. The way history looks back at us, this falls on all of us, this kind of stuff.
That we continue to let happen. That makes us the butt of jokes in other parts of the world.
Yeah, absolutely it does. And it should be on everybody that they want that to change. They
want better. They want better for our nation, for our country, for our children. We've had an 8%
increase from 2020. It's insane. It's insane. Those numbers should be going down after the first
one. We all thought Columbine was going to be the last one or at least the big one, okay,
things are going to change after this. We continue to let this continue to happen.
You can point the blame at a lot of people. There's a lot of this. There's a many layered
conversation that not one thing is going to fix. But there is one thing that is darn sure about this.
We hire politicians to do a job for us. And they are not doing it. And they need to be replaced if
they are not going to do this job. They are not going to fix this. I'm done with who is in their
pocket. I'm done with the whole. Well, when a shooting happens, it's not the right time to talk
about it. Oh, when there's nothing happening right now. There hasn't been a shooting in a couple
of days. So it's not the right time to talk about it. Like they did for them. It's kicking the
can down the road constantly. But that 8% sound small, James. That's 40,167 people who have
died from gun violence this year. As of December 7th. And so sadly, that number is going to go up
before the end of the year. Go ahead. I know the emails are coming. James. mail if it's
civic media. US. I do not want to ban guns. I do not want to take guns away from people.
I am not a child. I am not an idiot. I understand the world works. I understand hunting. I understand
different things. If you are a pro gun person, you should want this just as badly as we do.
Right. This is no different than when I talk to Sheriff Becker about bad cops.
Know who hates bad cops more than anybody. Good cops. Yeah. Yeah. Get on the right side of
history on this one, everybody. I would like to send a big shout out and a big thank you.

If you've ever dreamed of traveling, you know, this might be a list for you. We've got
the hottest travel destinations of 2024 and the top two on the list are a little interesting to me.
Cleveland or Saudi Arabia. Really? Yeah, I didn't see that coming. You might want to start
planning now if you want to go to either of those places because these could be two of the
hottest travel destinations next year. Interesting. Travel and leisure has released a feature
called Where to Go in 2024 and it doesn't just include the same old places like New York,
Disney World, or trendy places like Iceland, which has become a very trendy place to go to
apparently. Instead, the beaten path destinations that thoughtful, curious travelers should
consider in 2024. Interesting. There are, you know, I mean, there's so many hidden gems and
in places you wouldn't expect, apparently also like in Cleveland, Ohio. Yeah, you're right,
and the Middle East is fascinating. It is a fascinating place. Just go with a group.
Yeah. Yes, yes. You certainly want to do your homework before you do that, but I couldn't
not agree with you more, Melissa. Some of the most beautiful cultures, some of the oldest culture
in our history and our world. You know, we worry about crime. We worry about danger. We're going
to, that's everywhere. You do have to be smart. You need to be well informed. You need to make
good choices and follow travel recommendations from reliable sources. If I got friends coming
to Central Wisconsin, I tell them things. I want to, I mean, it's not as bad as certain areas or
anything like that. Obviously. Yeah. But I think everywhere has something to at least warn people
about or tell people about it. Lock your cars. I remember when the recent rass, rass, rass, rass,
right now, rass, rass. There you go. Recent rass, which is hard to say for you. It is. Of
that's we had around here. You know, they weren't maybe, maybe weren't locals. But that there's
always a reason to watch out, protect yourself. I remember watching the news with my papa,
and there would be a, you know, in Hawaii, there would be a hurricane or something like that.
And over here in the States, there would be a tornado or something. He would talk about
there's, there's nowhere you can go where Mother Nature doesn't, you know, have something.
It's a little crime or any of these things. It can be similar. There's no perfect place.
There's bad people everywhere. But the majority of people I think are good. I believe, I choose to
believe that whether it's true or not. No, I'm with you on this. No, I'm with you on this. I
almost have to believe that. Yeah. Makes the world a better place. All right. And I got to
shout out Cleveland. I loved Cleveland. I've only been there. I stayed a couple of months there
with my aunt and uncle. And I loved it. I liked Cleveland. But I've never been there.
That's fun. The good city. It's a very, it's a very Midwest city to me. Very, you know,
it's hustle and bustle. But people are still holding the door open for you. That kind of thing.
We might have been near there when we went for a comedy show in Ohio. But I don't know exactly
where it was. We might have driven through it. Let's take a look at this list of thoughtful,
curious travelers should consider, should consider in 2024. Shinta Manny Mustang,
Nepal, or Warsaw Poland for culture immersion.
Oh, Poland would be a really neat place to visit, I think. But again, I'm kind of up for anywhere.
Yeah. Yeah. Me too. I certainly have to, when it comes to Poland, the north or south pole.
No, no. I don't need those extremes. As a Jew going to Poland is bittersweet. I would like to,
and at the same time, there are Warsaw, there are aspects of Europe in general.
They will be pretty difficult. But at the same time, I feel a calling or a need to, to go to some
of those places. Well, for the people who survived, and thrived afterwards. I think it's worth
seeing. Seven of my relatives escaped out of those camps. I feel like it's very full circle and
pretty darn cool for me with a chis blood, with stern blood in my, to be able to go back, there's a
free man. Bangkok, Istanbul, or Cleveland. Interesting list. Interesting. I don't think it's
Cleveland, just I don't think that was that was where I thought that was going to go. Those are
four big city thrills. You want big city thrills now. Thrills, Istanbul, Constantinople.
Now it's going to be in my head. I've heard a lot of good things about Bangkok too, but Istanbul is
one of those places I would like to go, just so I could sing this song. No, that'd be an
interesting one. What they're throwing at in here, I like, they're not giving you the
typical. They're giving you, you know, some interesting stuff. A lot of the beaten track of,
but if big cities, those are all obviously big cities, but funny that they chose Cleveland,
not New York, which is your typical go to big city in the states. If nature lovers, big sky,
Montana, or Mara Bay, Boston, Bostonia, those are good places. So the Dominican, not in the
Caribbean, not to be confused with the Dominican Republic. Okay. And for adventurous travelers,
they throw out their Saudi Arabia or Northern Pakistan. I think one that I don't normally see on
the list, but I would think should be maybe because it just is so people travel to it so often.
I think India. India seems like one of those countries. I don't know I don't know as much as I
would like to know about it and it seems like it would be a very fascinating place to go.
I know a couple people who have traveled there and they say that it's amazing. It is such an
awesome, awesome experience. And it's different because it's a huge, huge country. And the
difference is in culture across the country is amazing. And in food and the history there is
just, it's fascinating. But there's a lot of poverty. A lot, a lot of poverty. Classism in India
has been a problem almost since its existence. It shouldn't be in place anymore, but here we are.
Metis crossing in Alberta, Canada. I read a little bit about this just because it caught my eye,
the beauty of it and everything. It is a place to go. You can see reindeer over there and that
kind of thing just popping around. It seems beautiful. This is not the place where you look at old
things behind glass said we need a moroseo of Metis crossing, one of Canada's most compelling
indigenous tourism projects. I encourage people to read about that. It's a beautiful place. Isn't
that that far? Well, in the history that we have in North America as the continent of North America
is very different from the history that you see in the United Kingdom or Europe is in general.
Our history is very different. I think one of the things that I want to do so badly is to see
some of that history. Some of the older, the better to me. That's what I want. I want to do it here
in the States, go out east, you know, see them with the first roads. A lot of ours is in the earth,
you know, which is so cool. I don't know. I find history very interesting, but I also think it's
vital to know going forward. You know, we're just going to repeat things. We don't learn them.
That's very true. Coming up in the top of the night clock hour, Madison Rafter, executive
