Good morning, Wisconsin. Good morning, world. It's a new day. We hope you're feeling good. We sure are around here
We're going to make sure you do too. We got good stuff on the way for you throughout the hour, Seth and James here with you at 804 on the clock
We're joined right now by our good friend Mr. Paul Tromba from whether I weather center
How you doing Paul? Good morning. Good morning. Paul got any fun plans this weekend
I know nothing nothing to have on that docket really yet, but just you know probably normal running around a little bit here and there for the weekend. How about you guys?
I got my sister coming in the town, so I'm going to be looking forward to seeing her. I haven't seen my little sister in a little while. She's bringing her two little dinosaur boys with her.
I got two little boys and just bowling balls. I love my nephews with their little bowling balls.
So I've been preparing myself for that, Paul. It's nice to have kind of a calm weekend this time of year. You take whatever once you can get right, you know?
Exactly. Is Mother Nature going to be calm? What is the weather going to look like, Paul?
Yeah, you know, pretty calm here for us cooling down a bit with these temps through the weekend and also seeing some of the rain showers coming into the picture here late tonight.
So I'm more kind of overnight a band of some rain showers moving in and then maybe a couple of snow showers developing by Saturday evening.
But otherwise still a mix of clouds and sun out there today highs up near 50 South Southwest went 10 to 15 tonight clouds rolling in with the rain coming in overnight.
Mid 30s showers early Saturday then staying cloudy. Hide about 39 a few snow showers possible to get a Saturday evening 23 and then on Sunday partial sun some clouds 31 16 Sunday night 35 partly sunny on Monday.
Highs around 33 in a Tuesday still mid 30s on some Wednesday with some sun and highs to getting back up in the 40s again Thursday. So still warm September or warm December.
Can you feel for us feels a little like September. Yeah, today looks a little easier. Yeah.
We appreciate you Paul. You have yourself a great weekend. We'll meet together. We'll get together on Monday. We'll let get everybody started with the week. Right.
All right. It's not like a plan. Take care. Thank you, but best in the business. Yeah. I friend Paul, probably from the weather. I weather said is always appreciate Paul joining us. That's fun. Always good.
We got good things lined up for you this hour. We're going to get into how many people consider traveling home for the holidays of vacation.
Oh, that's good. Yeah. Parents are mad at Google for asking this one or for a common Christmas question from kids. We'll get into what that is.
How many people get a Christmas real Christmas tree and how many have already gotten one. Okay. Gotta get into that too. We will kick off in this hour.
Not only do we have missed these many birthday and anniversary club. But after our state and local news, we're going to make you a star of the day. Christmas edition. All right.
I've got a three Fridays before Christmas. And we're going to hit Christmas themes on each one of them. Very cool. Today it's a Christmas movie.
You got to tell me what what's what we're going to play a song and what movie that is from. Very cool. That is going to be our one for today. You do that right and boom.
Just like that. You're going to win yourself a family pack of four from our friends at callers to adult meals to kids meal free callers. Nice.
Nine o'clock hour is going to kick off with our friend Mike Clemens talking, you know, our local sports reporter going to be talking with us. We're looking forward to have Mike join us.
Preview some of the great Wisconsin sports going on this weekend. That'll be how we start the nine o'clock. Get into a little bit of entertainment news with you Seth.
You and I get together. We have to why does Ryan Seacrest love radio. We'll get into that. Cool. And I've got a list in the honor of Hanukkah of a list of Jewish rock stars. Nice.
And I did not put this together. This is this is from who is this from here. I just I just I have to do. Okay. It's rolling stone. Oh very good. Yeah. Yeah. I did not do that. I did it to get popped up this morning. I got all excited. I'm not going to lie.
A little bit later. I want to get into what are some of the things we'll be nostalgic about in 20 years. That'll be good. Yeah. That should be a fun one. That should be good. All that coming up for you along with some good stories of the day.
We've got a lot of local things we want to cover as well. Got to root off country Christmas. We've got the seventh annual Christmas tree walk. Of course the winter farmers market is going on this weekend as well. And look, I don't I don't know if anybody else has been having this issue or not.
We got this mischievous Merton merchant Merlin Elf man bobbing around with our friends over quality foods IGA as they're trying to stock shelves and trying to do stuff.
Mischief maker. Yeah, popping up there. Yeah, I was trying to put cereal on the shelves and boom. There's another one out there. We got to catch this elf. And we need your help doing that everybody. We are going to give you a hint a little bit later.
You take that hint and run over to quality foods IGA get a picture of that elf once you find them and put it on our Facebook pages WF HR WYRI both of them. I put it on both just to cover your face. Absolutely.
Wish me with make sure to do that with the hashtag WR quality foods. Yeah. And we'll collect the submissions. And then on the 21st, we're going to draw one name in that lucky person to win a holiday ham celebration basket. Nice. It's pretty cool.
Take care of your holiday meal right there. Yeah, looking forward to that. That's going to be coming up a little bit later. Nice. I do, as I mentioned Hanukkah. I did want to just give everybody. And I have got a story that I want to share a little bit later and a poem that my daughter wrote.
It's short. It's really short. And it's really, really good. Like I know she's my kid. So I'm biased. But I, I, I, I, I, I, I read this for an author friend of mine. And, and she had the same reaction my mother and I had.
I think you might like it. So we're going to read that for you a little bit later. I did want to start our show being sending a shout out to a great local business. Our good friends at images and ink.
Want to say good morning to Dan and Don over there to my favorite people in the world was in there yesterday for a couple hours. I was getting a, it's more of a remake than a touch up.
Oh, okay. I had to get this one touched up. I got this one. I was 40 and this one that wraps around my arm.
It's working. Being around Dan and Don, it's a 90% conversation. We're just catching up. And the rest is actually getting the tattoos and all that.
I personally, I've said this before that the two best tattoo artists I've ever known. And if you're getting worked on, I think you go to images and ink here in central Wisconsin. There you go.
I'm going to send you some kind of conversation. Shout out to all of our artists out there though when I don't want to disrespect any artists out there. But I'm a little biased. These are my people.
And Don's my old high school friend and everything. And where she was working on it. And she starts working on the inside of my arm. I've got a really good pain tolerance.
You know, you don't get stabbed and punched and all the fights I was in without some kind of positive to come out of it. And I've always been thankful for that.
Getting the tattoo on the inside of your arm over your right over your bicep. Yeah, there's no way to toughen that skin up. Just no way. And then when you have pipe cleaners for arms.
Man, here's the thing that I'm proud of too though. And Dan noted this. I wasn't crying. I wasn't complaining. Nothing like that. But I got real quiet. Yeah, I got real. I'm with you there, man.
The inside of my cheek is probably just gummed up too.
Is it offered you? Would you like this piece of wood?
There are moments where you're like, why did I choose to do this to myself?
And it's not because of the very fortunate that Don is incredibly good watch.
To be able to be as in tune with her clients as she is. The creativity comes in. I will never normalize a creative being able to do stuff in the moment.
And what they can accomplish and do, especially when your canvas is human skin. Yeah, like I don't even know how you begin to do.
You know, getting into a world like that and everything. Let alone where Dan and Don are. I can't even imagine.
Like the worst shakiest hands. I'm like, oh my god. I don't want to think about me doing that.
And it is great as they are at what they do. I think that you know, you get great. And to me, greatness isn't about skill level. It's about motivation. It's about desire.
And you could be so great at something. Have a great clientele and just sit back on your laurels if you want.
Sure.
Dan and Don have been always looking for different equipment or different ways to perfect what they're doing. New ink.
A lot of these things. And I know this because not only have I gotten their work, but I've gotten work from them years ago in current work.
I'm telling you, it's such a different day and age with tattoos. These things heal like in a couple days now.
Yeah, compared to the back of the day when it took forever. Yeah.
It sure felt like a two man. Like it felt like weeks and weeks before that stuff healed up. Now it just it happens so quick.
I've got my I have to have my shirt off a bit today just to let it breathe and stuff. But it's not hurting nearly as much as they used to or anything incredible.
Yeah. Big shot of two are one of our great favorite local businesses here in town, images and ink.
You're looking for work to get done to 21 Oak Street right here in Wisconsin.
Yeah, but you can't miss them. And again, a good morning to them. Really good to see those guys hope you guys have a good morning. Happy holidays to you.
Yeah.
We're going to go ahead and take a early quick commercial break here. Get out of the way.
That's a birthday to get to. Yeah. We do have a big list to get to. We've also got our star of the day to get to.
We got to catch this mischievous merchant elf.
Man, that's going on this hour. Holy cow.
I'm only going to get the mischievous Merton merchant elf.
The Merlin part. I don't know where that comes from and I'm not going to be able to remember that.
You Merlin. That went in there. I didn't know what Merlin has to do with the kind of Chris. I don't know. That's why it doesn't stick for it.
I got the merchant mischievous merchant elf though.
You've never seen that weird Mexican sand closet movie or Merlin does make an appearance.
You are so right. And you are right. I remember that. It was the.
Is that the. We got to have a discussion about this. What is the weirdest Christmas special?
I don't remember. I think I blocked it out, man. So consciously.
We're going to try to do some hypnosis and you know, I'm covering some of those memories during the break.
We'll be back with this. He's many birthday anniversary club. Okay. All right. Before we go to break.
424, 2600, 715, 424, 2600. Now until Christmas, we are going to keep a roving conversation going.
Weirdest Christmas specials. The most obscure things you've seen shown once on TV. Let us know.
I'd love to figure it out. Find them. Call up when you're self some shirts.
If you've already got shirts and maybe a good Christmas gift.
We've got an early submission. Santa Jaws from our own Melissa Kay.
I just happened. I just happened to look down at my phone and Melissa is good timing.
Yes. Excellent. Excellent.
Santa Jaws is a good one. That's a good one.
Take a break. Come back with more fun in the morning show at WFHR.
We always get that one. We always do. It seems like we do.
Well, it's time to do some celebrating with the Beatles and our good friends over at Misty's.
Many we encourage to treat yourself. Get on over to Misty's. They're open right now to open 6 to 2, 7 days a week.
And 90 41st today with 13th South in Wisconsin Rapids. When you get there, wish the gang a great, big, day, happy day.
And a happy weekend from all of us here at WFHR. I was incorrect there. They're open six days a week.
They're still doing that. They are closed on Wednesdays for the month of December.
They're going to be taking the final week of the year off, coming back.
And we'll touch on other hours and the changes over there at Misty's.
But keep in mind, the menu, the staff, all those things. Nothing's changing like that over there.
Stay in the same. So we appreciate that and appreciate our great friends at Misty's menu.
As long as I was looking into this, as long as there's been a Misty's menu,
they have been advertising with us here at WFHR. That's correct, which is so cool.
That is beautiful. 22 years. Yeah, wow amazing.
Both institutions in this town and we are very, very thankful to the relationship we got with our friends over at Misty's.
Treat yourself. Get on over to Misty's there at 90 41st today with 13th South in Wisconsin Rapids.
Seth, I need a one through three from you.
Two.
And we go. It gives us that qualifier.
And we got our main qualifier for Saturday done.
And then a one through three for Sunday.
One.
All right, gives us that qualifier.
So we can get right into the celebration.
And first up, we want to wish happy birthday to Jason Went.
Happy birthday, Jason.
And joy your day, Jason.
Hopefully there's a great one for you.
And we wish happy birthday to our qualifier, Kathy Sedevy.
Oh, happy birthday, Kathy.
Kathy, enjoy your congratulations.
Yeah, I appreciate you guys getting us this birthday and anniversary.
We love all of our local birthdays, but I really love these ones where they got that last name.
That's a fun name to say, isn't it?
It's a beautiful name.
Yeah, I love saying that one.
Looking at Saturday, we get to put the spotlight on one group.
It is a couple celebrating their 62nd anniversary.
Gerald and Marge went.
Oh, happy anniversary to you tomorrow.
Happy 62, you guys.
62, my goodness.
That's beautiful.
That is beautiful.
On Sunday, we wish a very happy birthday to Penny Love.
Happy birthday to Penny.
That's a great name.
That's a good one.
Happy 57th anniversary to Bernie and Jerry Encro.
Happy anniversary.
Happy 57, you two.
That's man.
That is a good one this weekend.
It's a really good one, that.
And a happy 46th to our qualifiers, Tom and Ellen Sox.
Wow, congratulations and many happy returns to them.
We have got some epic anniversaries this weekend.
Wow.
Happy 62nd to Gerald and Marge went.
Happy 57th to Bernie and Jerry Encro.
Again, happy 46th to Tom and Ellen Sox.
Good job, you people.
Oh, they're my goodness.
I appreciate all of you getting those.
Taking a quick look at our celebrity list.
Let's see here.
Sam Hunt is 39th, country singer.
Body like a back road.
That's heck of a name.
Heck of a name.
Oh, man.
I like that title.
Nicki Minaj is 41.
Wow.
It seems like she's been around for so long.
It does.
I did not realize she was in her that much older.
Yeah.
Phillip Rivers is 42.
They say retired and a full quarterback.
I know that he's officially retired.
But Phillip Rivers has like 11 or 12 kids at home.
I feel like if you call him up, he may come.
He may come play a couple of games.
He may start his own football team.
Actually, he's got 11 kids.
Yeah.
Hi, he might.
Dominic Monahan is 47.
Charlie Unlost.
Mary in the, Mary the Hobbit in the Lord of the Rings movies.
Very good actor.
I like him.
I like him a lot.
I thought he was really good in loss.
One of the better actors on lost.
They had some really good cast members on that show.
He was one of the better pieces, I thought.
He hated how they, spoiler alert, earmuffs everybody.
I did not like how they, they got rid of that character.
I did not like that.
I was very bad about that.
It was lame.
It was lame.
Oh, man.
It was lame.
Cory Taylor from Slipknot is 50 today.
Oh.
I saw Slipknot when they did, like, wait and believe their first song had come out.
We were in the Osfest.
And the main stage had the death tones out.
And we were kind of like, you know, and, and, and we weren't the only ones.
Chris and I, as we started the migrate over to the second stage because there was this really,
there was a sound coming over there.
And all we could see from where we were were, there was like 20 people on stage.
And all in masks.
We're like, alright, what's this?
As we started to go over there, we were going over with a flood of people.
And I've never seen this at a concert before where I, I'm not even exaggerating.
Like a good 100-some people moved from the death tones over to Slipknot.
This band that nobody knew who they were.
And they were on a smaller stage, 20-some people and just insanely good.
I thought to have all those instruments, all those different things going on.
And they were still copper, like I can still copper and what they were doing.
I think history has borne you out on this one.
Yeah.
I mean, not many people remember the death tones.
But Slipknot has had quite an interesting career.
Yeah, yeah.
Marty Friedman from Megadeth is 61.
Wow, lots of metal going on here.
Wow.
Phil Collin from Def Leopard is 66.
Okay, that's not metal, but yeah.
There's it's hard rock.
So yeah.
And Ken Basinger is 70.
Oh.
Ken Basinger.
Man.
A good actor.
Yes, very good.
But we go back into music then, Seth, where Jim Morrison was born on this day in 43.
Wow.
Incredible writer.
Yeah.
Singer and performer.
You know, a showman, all those things.
Yeah.
And then Greg Alman, born in the state of 1947, passed away in 2017.
Oh, my gosh.
So we did a rock fest one year for my old GLX days.
The Travis Aes and I.
And Panama had done a bunch of these already.
And it was kind of like, I don't know.
We had like 10 minutes before he told, but he's like, hey, you guys want to introduce the Alman brothers?
What?
Yeah.
We want to introduce the Alman brothers.
And we had to rush over there because they were on the other side.
And we get over there just in the nick of time and we're all out of breath.
And Travis and Aes were behind me because I was faster.
And I'm walking up the steps not really thinking about, I don't know where I'm doing.
I don't know where I'm going.
I don't know what I'm going to say.
I look up and up there.
The first thing I see is all these guitars on the wall.
And then I see Greg Alman.
And he, hey young man, how you doing?
You're the one doing this and I point this.
I don't even say anything.
I just point to Aes and Travis.
I was so taken back.
I was completely star struck.
Wow.
I can count on one hand how many times that's happened to me.
Greg Alman looked good, but he also looked like rock and roll.
Like he looked, he sounded.
He did a poster boy for rock and roll right here.
Yeah.
He said that about Mick Jagger.
I thought that about when I saw Greg Alman.
Yeah.
But I mean, Justin, he still sounded great.
Yeah.
One of my favorite bands of all time.
Those guys that can do that for 40 years, sing like that.
I'm always, it's amazing.
And one more artist, Bushwick Bill, board of the state 1966 rapper
with the ghetto boys.
And so we got into the musicians there.
We're not done with today, though, everybody.
As far as we got a couple of comedians to mention.
Oh wow.
Well, David Caridine, board of the state in 1936.
She mentioned that.
Another great actor, kind of John Caridine.
Sam Kenneson, board of the state in 1953, passed away in 1992.
Yes, angry, yelling, comedian, very smart comedian.
Very smart, yes.
I had a lot of smart comedy back in the day.
The 80s were full of comedians with gimmicks.
But the thing he gets lost in the shuffle is Gallagher
wasn't just smashing watermelons.
Gallagher had other props.
And he always had a good joke to go along with it.
Maybe they didn't always land.
But it wasn't just, hey, I'm just smashing watermelons.
He had some comedy to it.
Eddie Murphy, Richard Prior, George Carlin, Sam Kenneson,
all of these guys were smart comedians.
They had their gimmicks.
They had their things that caught your eye.
But you stuck around for that fifth, tenth joke
because they were smart comedians.
Right.
They didn't just, they didn't go just on the gimmick.
They used that kind of as an entry point
and then went with their real comedy.
Didn't Sam Kenneson do wild thing, too?
Like a song like he did once.
I think he did.
Yeah.
He's yelling at it.
He's not really saying anything.
But yeah.
He's either him or Bill Hicks did it
because I know Bill Hicks saying several songs, so yeah.
Not so much the 90s, but the 80s.
You knew your star got too big if they offered you a record deal.
Like Bruce Willis.
I mean, like, how many artists that we should not have had?
And I love, love Bruce Willis.
But how many artists, they probably should have gotten a record deal.
They got a record deal.
No.
No.
Flip Wilson born in this day in 1933.
Pestway in 1998.
You can't talk about standard comedy.
You can't talk about comedians without Flip Wilson.
Speaking of gimmicks.
He did have a few himself, too, with the old Geraldine thing,
which was pretty good, though.
Many people say, I've heard Martin Lawrence
and Chris Rock talk about this.
There's actually in the African-American acting
in standard comedy community.
There is a almost right of passage of doing drag.
Interesting.
Those starts with Flip Wilson.
Pestway.
Chris Rock hasn't really done it.
But almost every, like, you know, Martin Lawrence,
of course Tyler Perry has gone, you know,
and that's his whole thing.
Right.
But a lot of it.
It's gone on a lot in that area.
And it's weird to hear or talked about.
Yeah.
It's interesting.
And I think maybe the most entertaining,
the greatest entertainer I've ever seen.
If I really had to say, you put me on the spot.
Greatest entertainer I've ever seen.
Not talking about the greatest actor, musician, or singer, dancer.
Sammy Davis Jr.
born in this day in 1925.
Pestway in 1990.
I didn't get to see Sammy at his peak.
No.
But what I saw Sammy Davis Jr.
even at the tail end of his career.
I've never seen anybody who was at 10 singing, dancing, acting,
and seeing just in an interview.
Right.
There was no style of dancing the man couldn't do.
No style of singing he couldn't do.
He was a fantastic actor.
Wonderful interview.
And everything we've ever heard.
One of those guys that everybody loved to work with.
Everybody loved Sammy.
I can't think of like, there's a lot of names.
We can have a great discussion on this and everything.
And I'm not saying I'm right.
But if you put me on the spot,
who is the most entertaining person you've ever seen?
Sammy Davis Jr.
Without a second, I'm saying that.
I would, today, I would go on YouTube.
Look up some of his live performances.
You will never see a man who is more comfortable on the stage.
Yeah.
That's where he belonged.
He loved being on the stage in front of the crowd.
Entertaining people that is where he was at his best.
And it's really amazing.
It's remarkable.
My whole life, I'll be working to feel that comfortable on stage.
Yes.
Tomorrow, looking at some quick celebrity birthdays,
John Melkovich, a celebrated birthday.
70 years old for the great John Melkovich.
Wow.
Chicago's own.
One of the greatest actors I've ever seen.
Dick Puckis would have been celebrating a birthday tomorrow.
Wow.
Would have been 81 tomorrow.
One of the greatest.
I think you make the argument top five.
Or you can't make the argument.
Easily top five running linebackers involved.
Oh, yeah.
Kirk Douglas.
So it would have been celebrated a birthday tomorrow.
Born in 1916.
Again, one of the better actors.
Sonic actor.
Yeah.
I am Spartacus.
You know, my dad was watching the most recent Batman.
And he's never seen Robert Pattinson.
He's never seen him act before.
So I'm watching it.
And he's like, this kid's pretty good, Jimmy.
Like, you know, he's asking me about him and everything.
And he's like, it's his jaw.
He's got that Kirk Douglas jaw.
He does.
I never thought of that before.
Just blew my mind.
I'm like, wow.
Okay.
Well, my brother and I get into this next 10 minute discussion
about great jaws and acting history.
It's your Bert Lane cast here.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Back to the day they had like 80 actors.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I feel like they were cast.
Let me see your jaw.
Let me see your jaw.
Robert Redford probably had the most square jaw, you know.
I loved Kirk Douglas though.
Great.
Excellent actor.
And we mentioned Flip Wilson.
And so many other greats were born on this day.
In 1922, the legend Red Fox.
I'm coming.
Are you crazy?
You make dummy.
Oh, man.
How many of us didn't grow up on Sanford and Son?
It might be easier to like just confine those numbers and those of us that weren't touched by Sanford and Son.
Right.
Maybe the greatest theme song of all time.
Like it is.
It's just one of those great ones.
I love it.
And when we're we're going to be talking a little bit later.
Oh, yesterday we were talking a little bit about Norman Lear.
I mean, you know, it's just real.
It's all lining up here.
Yeah.
It's all connecting there.
And you know what?
If you black comedians, you can mention every single one of them.
You know, the trailblazers, your Dick Gregory's, your Richard Price.
The guy who's the Godfather of them all was Red Fox.
Yep.
Back when his records, you could not display.
You had to have them under the counter.
Yeah.
Because of the stuff he was talking about.
The jokes were very, you know, kind of raunchy and stuff like that.
So true.
Yeah.
Pretty almost what they were called.
Yes.
But if it bows in the nose, you know, can I have the red, you know, the red spot.
Yeah.
Here you go.
I got it right here, kind of thing.
So yeah.
So well said.
We're all quick looking at Sunday's birthdays.
Meg White is 49.
White psych.
White Stripes drummer.
Mm-hmm.
Drums a little bit here and there now.
I liked, well, I think Meg White was a great drummer.
I think she was really good.
Yeah.
That legend or anything like that.
She did a really good job.
I thought with what she was doing.
Bobby Flay is 59.
Iron Chef.
And the greatest Shakespearean actor I've ever seen.
Kenneth Bragnaw is 63 on this Sunday.
Certainly, you know, we've seen him in the parole movies, of course,
with a murder in Venice, the most recent one.
But I got to see that movie though.
It's really good.
Mm-hmm.
But I've never seen a Shakespearean actor that does what Kenneth Bragnaw does.
He's got this amazing range, too.
I mean, it's, and he's a director and he's a writer.
I mean, yeah, he does, he does it all.
It's amazing.
I was told early on that you can't do the acting game and not get Shakespeare down.
Whether you like Shakespeare or not, you're going to have to do Shakespeare,
if you want to really be respected in this industry.
And he was the first person that I learned that I would study and try to learn from.
I could study him the rest of my life every single day for hours and hours and hours
and never even come close to what Kenneth Bragnaw is.
If you are looking for a telling of Hamlet,
I generally don't believe there is a better Shakespearean movie made,
let alone a better version of Hamlet than Kenneth Bragnaw's Hamlet.
Yeah.
You know, the amazing thing for him, you know, there was a cycle of probably before him,
the most recognized Shakespearean actor was Lawrence Olivier because he brought it to the screen.
He's the one that brought them to the screen.
For some, I don't know how he did it.
Kenneth Bragn, on the late 80s and the 90s, brought Shakespeare back to the screen and made it popular.
Yes.
That's an amazing accomplishment.
Really is.
But you're right about the Hamlet.
And by the way, that Hamlet movie is one of the few uncut versions of the play.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Even if you go to a stage production now of Hamlet, there's edits.
Because the whole play itself is like three hours long.
Yeah.
So you said they want to cut it down to like an hour and a half or something like that.
He did a really cool thing where there's an intermission in the movie.
And they actually have curtains come down.
Oh, cool.
And go back up.
Rob Williams has a beautiful performance in there.
That's right.
That's one of my favorites of this.
All the cast in that is amazing.
It's easily one of the...
Billy Crystal's in there.
You think the department's got a big cast.
Look at that Hamlet movie.
Yep.
It's great as Kenneth Bragnah is, I've never seen anybody do a female character
maybe better than Kate Winslet as Ophelia.
Yeah.
I don't know how any...
How an actress would ever do that role after seeing her do it.
It's got to be hard.
I would imagine.
We will take a break.
Come back after our state and local news, making you a star the day with our friends from callvers.
On WFHR's morning show here at locally grown radio.
Lights, camera, action.
It is time to make somebody a star the day with our friends in the Wisconsin Rapids callvers.
What Seth and I are about to do is play a famous holiday classic from a great holiday classic movie.
You tell us what movie this is from at 715-424-2600.
If you have the civic media app, you can just press one button and get right to us.
That's right.
We had a winner a couple weeks ago using that and they got to us right away.
Awesome.
So not a bad idea to download that app.
Yep, you call 715-424-2600.
Tell Seth and I what movie this is from and you will win a beautiful family pack of four from our
Wisconsin Rapids callvers.
That's two kids meals.
That's two kids, that's two kids meals, two adults meals.
That's free callvers.
That's all you need to know.
That's delicious.
There's what it is.
There's only one thing better than callvers.
Free callvers.
Yes.
Let's get to it.
We're going to play this for you right now.
You're ready to call up 715-424-2600.
You know I've written special music for each holiday.
This sort of gives me a chance to keep a little promise I made to myself.
I said I was going to sing this song at the end tonight.
I'm dreaming of a wise Christmas.
Just like the ones I used to know.
Let's go ahead and see if we have a winner.
Good morning.
What's your answer?
Let's try again.
Good morning.
What's your answer?
I want to try white Christmas.
You are correct, sir.
Wait a minute.
What's the movie from?
What's the movie it's from?
Let's see.
Bing cross me.
I don't...
Yeah, it's a tough one.
This one's a little bit more challenging.
Yeah.
Hey, that's all right.
Go ahead and we'll keep this going for another minute.
424-2600.
What movie is the song from?
I think we all understand that it's white Christmas.
Right.
But what movie is white Christmas from?
I'll just let Bing keep on singing here while we wait another minute.
I believe this is the song that the movie was introduced in.
If I remember correctly.
Yes.
715-424-2600.
How about this?
Name me another Bing Crosby Christmas song.
Okay.
Name me another Bing Crosby Christmas song.
If you don't know the name of the movie, 424-2600.
Otherwise, any of our collars that just tried to win, go ahead and feel free to call back.
Yeah.
All right.
This is actually a very good movie.
And I'll give a hint.
Yeah.
Actually, the movie White Christmas, you know, we've talked about before from 1956.
This was the movie that it was sort of supposed to be a sequel to.
Right.
From 1942 is what this movie is from.
So, that's not an easy one.
I got to say, because this movie is not as remembered as the other one is.
Yeah.
So, I wanted to choose a tough one.
I didn't mean to stop everybody, though.
I got to be honest.
I thought this was supposed to be one of our easier ones.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was a little tough, but I didn't think I was going to go stumping people here.
So, we got to get a winner.
Yeah.
I have a few used to do.
We have always had winners, but we have never gone hitless with this segment.
No.
No, we have not.
715-424-2600.
Do you call up right now?
Give us your best guess, and you'll get this.
You'll get this.
All right.
We'll do it that way.
We've already had a couple of collars go ahead and feel free to call back.
715-424-2600.
Let's go ahead and see if we have ourselves a winner.
Try again.
It's flashing again.
Let's try that.
There we go.
Good morning.
What's your answer?
Holiday Inn.
Yeah.
We got it.
We got to make it official.
Got to make it official.
Got to get the winning bell in there.
There we go.
All right.
It's official.
Did you have to look that one up?
Yeah.
That's all right.
We're okay with that.
Yes.
We're very okay with that.
Yeah.
Holiday Inn was the classic movie that this one was from.
The Bing and many others were in it.
It was from Fred Astaire.
Yeah.
It was from Fred Astaire.
Yeah.
It's a shame.
There's some spots in the movie that have gotten, you know,
it never got to be an agent.
No.
No.
But some really good performances in there.
Yes.
Can I get your first name, Miss?
Pam.
Pam, we love that name around here.
That's one of our favorite names.
Pam, thank you so much for calling up and playing along.
What town do you call us from?
I'm Rapids.
All right.
Got ourselves a Rapids winner.
Excellent.
Pam, do me a favor.
Hang on a line.
We're going to get some information from you off air.
But you are our newest star of the day.
Woo.
Awesome.
Thank you, Pam.
Appreciate it.
Great reaction.
I love that.
All pams are great.
Aren't they?
I feel it's safe to say that.
You stand by that, I think.
Yeah.
I'm going to stand by that.
Well, we're going to take a quick commercial break talk to Pam.
We'll be back to talk a little bit about that mischievous merchant elf.
Yeah.
And how many of us consider traveling home for the holidays of vacation?
We'll get into that.
More on the morning show at WFHR.
Anybody else just think of Christmas vacation every time they hear this song?
It's kind of funny.
It's been associated with that.
Every time.
Since that movie came out, yeah.
And I know I heard it a billion times before I saw the movie.
Oh, of course.
But for some reason, I just immediately think of the boarding.
In the opening of the boarding.
Oh, gosh.
Yeah.
A lot of people, especially younger adults, use some vacation time in December to go home for the holidays.
But does that count as a true quote vacation?
34% of people say traveling home does not count as a vacation.
In fact, 71% say that they're probably going to need a vacation after their family time.
Very honest of them.
I say that.
Yeah.
Most people stay with the family or friends when they go back home.
But 34% of people say that they're planning to stay somewhere else like a hotel, a bed and breakfast, a hostel, or an Airbnb.
Maybe staying in a quote new place is a hack that can make it feel more like a vacation.
Some reasons people pick hotels include more space for themselves.
They can relax, be taken care of.
They can get some quiet time.
And there are some amenities that they wouldn't have otherwise.
Right.
I am actually, I have no problem with that.
For me, it's also for, you know, I always feel like I'm imposing a bit.
Even if they've been invited and say, oh no, come stay with us.
I get that.
But I still feel, you know, at times it's like, I feel like I'm imposing on their life.
I would rather just, you know, be with them during the day.
And then say, okay, we're going to stay here and then don't worry about your routines and that kind of stuff.
I should journalistically mention I have never been on a vacation.
Right.
So I read something like this and my immediate thought is like, well, I mean, how many vacations are you on that you can like be nitpicky about what a technical, what technically is a vacation?
A fair point.
I mean, really it is.
But it's also, I also have family.
And I get how it can be sometimes.
You can love these people and you would die for these people.
But you may not want to spend another minute or another minute.
Exactly.
There's a line in the sand.
See, you should do a survey.
You should ask your sister, you know, who's coming up this weekend.
You should ask her, do you consider this a vacation?
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Answer two boys are like pulling at her hair.
No, I don't.
I love the idea too, because Julia doesn't do mean.
But I do every once in a while, you know, that comes out.
Like the vein in her forehead is popping out.
Definitely, yeah.
What do you consider out there?
424-2617-154-2426-100?
Do you consider it a vacation when you travel to go see relatives,
whether it's an hour away or a state away or anything like that?
I would think that one of the outliers here would be,
how far are you traveling, you know?
Yeah.
I don't know if I'm being like, again, I don't know.
I've never been on a vacation so I'm being so literal with it.
Like, ironically, if you move, if it's considered a vacation
by what's your restrictionary, if you...
I don't know.
So I will actually use myself as an example here,
because I will be traveling to see my parents,
which is they don't live where I grew up.
They now live in South Carolina.
That is where they retire too.
So we'll be going now and spending some time with them
over the holidays.
Funnily enough, as we're there,
one of the Christmas presents they're giving us,
as a family, is we're going on a vacation on our vacation.
So we're actually going up to North Carolina
to like a lodge, you know, for a few days,
to have, you know, for them too.
So it's like, what is that?
How do we categorize that?
Quite interesting.
Yes.
So that's kind of like one of those little...
What was it?
The German...
Oh, the Russian...
The Russian Dolls.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
That's a little bit what are those situations?
Yeah, exactly Dolls within the Dolls within the Dolls.
Yeah.
Yeah.
From you guys, four to twenty-six hundred,
let us know what you think of that one.
I kind of get it.
I do, but at the same time,
if you're getting to see loved ones,
I mean...
Yeah.
Even if it's not, quote unquote,
a vacation, it's still important, you know,
it's still...
Yeah, it's something you should be doing.
I'm a little curious about this too
if we extend the conversation.
Our good friend, Terry Johns, around here,
CEO of your United Way of South Wind and Ames Counties.
Terry just went on like one of those destination weddings.
Oh.
Her and Randy and the girls they traveled over.
Yeah.
To go to this wedding.
I don't know.
I would like to know,
do people consider that a vacation?
Mm-hmm.
You've got plans.
Usually those things are all booked, you know,
the next day that you're doing this at noon
and this at one and that kind of thing.
Right.
I don't know if people consider it.
Like to me, I definitely would.
I've never been out of the country.
I don't care what it's for.
Outside of like being, you know,
pulled to a court case outside the country
or something.
I'm considering that a vacation.
Well, and you know, that's a great point,
because like several years ago,
I went to England to do a conference in Oxford.
I like telling people that he has one of the colleges in Oxford.
You got to drop that.
So I went there because I didn't,
of course, I don't know anybody in England,
but Beth knew of a couple who, you know,
one was an American, one was British.
They got married and they moved back to England.
So she, you know, we've got to hold them.
They're like, oh no, come stay with us kind of thing.
So before I went to the conference,
I got to spend like a day or two with them.
And you know, they did the tour.
You know, we went to see the ancient Roman ruins,
you know, in the area where they lived up in the Midlands.
And so I got to do some of those things.
You got to do a pub, you know, a classic,
you know, British pub kind of thing,
which was a lot of, you know, it was great.
But I wasn't necessarily there on a vacation.
It was just to do something else,
but I did some touristy things while I was there.
So I don't know, what does that, does that count too?
I guess it depends.
What do you think?
When you look back at that time.
You know, I don't know, I guess I wouldn't,
just because I was there for another reason.
But it was very cool to be able to do at least a little bit
of that while I was there.
Well, I don't know much about the subject matter.
I will say if you feel like it was a vacation
or you don't, that tells you something.
I think that's a deep enough. I think you're right.
You got it. You should be your own judge of this kind of thing.
Right. Yeah.
It has some breaking news, one of the touch on the US.
Added $199,000 jobs in November.
And the unemployment rate fell to 3.7%.
Wow.
Not bad.
Yeah. Nice seeing those numbers as we get into the end of the year here.
We're going to take a phone call.
Good morning. What's on your mind?
Well, I was calling about the vacation thing.
Yeah. Yeah. What's up?
So I think it's less about whether or not you consider these things vacations.
And I mean visits to your family or even like the destination wedding, right?
It's not whether or not you consider it a vacation,
but can you make it a vacation, right?
Can you, by staying somewhere else and not with family,
can you maybe stay an extra night and do some sightseeing in that city, right?
Or stay in a different town and do something there,
and same with the destination wedding, right?
If you made time for you and your family to go to the beach outside of the wedding party,
yeah, that's a vacation.
There you go.
Yeah, I like that. I like that.
I'm convinced. Good argument.
Yeah, you got me.
Yeah, you got us.
Nice.
Nicely done.
Have a great day.
We'll talk soon.
Take care.
Yep.
Appreciate it.
We love our callers.
Thank you so much.
The best listeners in radio.
Yeah.
I got nothing after that one.
No, that's a very good point.
Very good.
Very good.
Well done argument.
So here's another one that we continue in the Christmas conversation.
A lot of people, especially younger adults use some,
where was that?
Here it is.
I'm sorry about that.
I got, there it is.
He's got like 300 tabs open on his computer.
That's why he's got to find a few tabs open.
Yes, I do.
So here's, this is silly to me,
but it's coming to a stock from a study that a lot of younger people have been adding to
and everything.
A new study looked at how we perceive people based just on the type of car they drive.
Oh, wow.
And it found a luxury automobile really can give a leg up maybe.
Researchers found that when someone's got an expensive ride,
other people assume that they're higher up in the social hierarchy.
They're probably an important person with an important job or at least a lot of money.
It also makes you more attractive to potential mates for obvious reasons, again, money.
As Don Allmire will tell you while your answers come back to money.
They found that that's true whether you're a man or a woman.
Quote, individuals with high status and perceived as a,
perceived as competent, attractive, received, preferable treatment
and are more likely to be favored in the job selection.
The study found driving a pricey car also makes you think you're more attractive and socially superior.
Ooh.
There is no evidence of any of this.
This is just all perception.
Exactly.
We are creating our own heads.
Tail wagging the dog there maybe a little bit.
Yeah.
This goes back to the gentleman that needs to overcompensate
or that's for a million different reasons.
Yeah.
I don't think you're saying all of these things.
Yeah.
And none of it ends well.
I've never heard somebody, hey, you guys have been doing together 30, 40 years.
How did you meet?
Well, he was driving an expensive sports car.
And I thought, well, he's got to have money.
Or he wouldn't be as attractive outside of the car.
But he's in the car and he's attractive.
I like that idea.
You know, so we got married with him in the vehicle.
He had to stay in the vehicle as we, as we got married.
Let's take this to the ridiculous end game on this.
Yeah.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
715-424-2600.
Call up and tell me how you and your significant other have been together 40 years.
And I first saw each other because it was that car.
Yeah.
Like, we have no, there's literally no stories that start that way.
You know, it's better than what I think.
Because every time I see someone driving a fancy car, I automatically think, oh, drug dealer.
Just kidding.
I don't eat.
You know, you're not far off.
You're not far off.
You're not far off.
Well, the Sackler family.
It was, it was a way, it was like the way that you wanted to get caught.
Because you were driving around in South Chicago in Alexis.
You know, it's like, well, wait a minute here.
Wait a minute.
That doesn't track here.
Something doesn't have.
You don't got to be clubbo to figure that one out.
You don't get it.
Yeah.
I can't think of anything more silly that we've talked about than this.
That's a little weird.
Yeah, studies.
I think, I don't think we need the study to tell us this.
I also don't think you need to, you know, if you've got two brain cells to rub together,
I think you also understand this is fleeting.
It's a fleeting thing.
It's a fleeting thing.
You want a fling.
You want something like that.
Sure.
More power to you.
But you're looking for something substantial.
I don't think many relationships started on, hey, they've got a fancy car.
They may have money.
I track.
I am now attracted to it.
Although I suppose I can be an attractor for some people.
I could be wrong here.
Yeah.
But I feel like that says more about you than it does the person in the car.
I think you may have something there.
We've got this dang mischievous merchant, Merlin Elf, just bopping around a quality food
IGA.
Yes.
While the great staff over there is trying to do their job.
Yeah.
Trying to stock shelves, trying to check people out.
