Hour 2: The best place for your vampire…

Mornings with WFHR · Tue Nov 21, 2023

Good morning, Wisconsin. Good morning, world. It's a new day. We hope it's treating you good.

We're certainly gonna. Got James and Melissa with you at 906 on the clock. We hope you're having

a great Tuesday out there. Thanks for joining us. We got fun things coming up. We're going to get

in some entertainment news in a moment. And part of that is going to be how holiday music affects

your shopping. Okay. Got that one coming up for you a little bit. And we're going to get into a

couple of other fun ones. In fact, I've got one Melissa. I think we if we have time for the best

and worst cities for vampires. Oh, good. Just for fun. To run into them or to live. We're going

to find out. We're going to find out. That's coming up for you a little bit later. If that wasn't

enough, we also got another that a right story for you. Add some good stories to the day, of course,

locally. We'll get into our schedule here at the station as well for our holiday week here.

All that coming up for you. But right now, want to dive into Dolly Parton news. We tease this over

on the sunrise show. You might have bought Dolly Parton's Rockstar album on Friday and enjoyed

30 instant classics. Nice work. Except Dolly wasn't done. Of course not. She released two bonus

tracks. One is a cover of any money's 1977 hit two tickets to Paradise. Oh, really? And at

which I I'm curious to hear. But the other is a remake of her own classic Jolene.

Oh, that I would like to listen to because the original gets stuck in my head all the time.

Same. It features the Italian band main skin. It's available digitally at Dolly Parton.com. You

can check it out there. I'm going to play a just quick sample of it for you right now. This is

again Dolly Parton and main skin with a reimagining of Jolene.

Little busier than the original. Yeah, it is. And I like what she does in the refrain with

with a little bit more of the, I don't know, ad libbing. Yeah, adding to.

I think that's a bad that's a good way to put it. That's the only way I'd put it.

Or the only way I would know how to put it either too. I don't know if there's musical

term. Like, you know, she's, she's in her later 70s and she still sounds so amazing.

I admire that was such a powerful voice and such a powerful legendary career in presence. How

she with a lot of these artists takes a back seat and kind of lets them take over. Yeah.

And she's kind of the back up to it. She's like the frosting though. Yes. Well, she's the best part.

This is the thing that's been right under my nose right in front of my face. Her whole career

that I don't think I ever truly appreciated until now. I don't know of another singer

that can mend with anybody better. Like in music history, I don't know of anybody. You put her

with anyone and she can, she can sing with them. They sound good together. She can harmonize with

anybody. And maybe I'm just, I understand so little about singing in music that, well, James,

anybody could do that. I don't, maybe I just don't see that or don't hear it. They have to,

they have to choose to. Yeah. She does. There's nobody, even if it's a song, I don't necessarily

get into. Like, I'll be honest, I don't get into a ton of her and Kenny Rogers stuff, but they

sound so good together. And name me the time that you've heard her sing with somebody and it

didn't sound harmony, like perfect harmonies. She's blending voices, but her voice is so

identifiable and iconic that you can tell it's her, but she manages to compliment whoever she's

singing with, like you said. Yeah. We told you about this earlier, but now we're, we're going to let

you know how you're going to check out a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It is a tradition. I don't know

if there is a Thanksgiving or a Christmas or a Halloween Thanksgiving or Christmas that go by

that I don't at least catch some of one of the specials from the peanuts. Yeah. It's been a

long time since I've seen it. So tell me how I can watch it this year. You've probably noticed

in recent years that a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving has an aired on ABC, like it used to since we were

kids, Melissa. Well, it's because Apple acquired the rights to the peanuts catalog back in 2020.

But to show some holidays, oh, same, same here, but I will give them credit on this to show some

holiday spirit and recognition of the specials 50th anniversary. Apple TV plus will allow non-subscribers

to watch it for free this Saturday and Sunday, the 18th and the 19th. Okay. A seven day free trial

is also available. If you want to watch it on Thanksgiving after the trial, Apple will charge you

$9.99 a month and make sure that you take that off of there if you don't want it. So last weekend,

you got to watch it for free. But on Thanksgiving, yeah, you have to sign up for a free trial. Yeah,

yeah. And by the way, I would have told everybody about this had I known. I didn't even, they did

not publicize this at all. So you know, I want to give them credit for it at the same time. They

will kind of like, you know, and I don't blame them completely on this. I don't think this is

going to sound really weird. I don't think Apple is very good at advertising. In part because

they don't feel like they've had to be. I've noticed this with McDonald's when we were kids,

McDonald's was the kings of advertising and fast food advertising. But they got bigger and bigger

and bigger. And now when's the last time there was a memorable ad from McDonald's or really any

conglomerate, Nike, any of these companies, like I really think that once they get to a certain

mark, they don't have to try as hard and they just don't get as good at this stuff. And it's not

even the mark necessarily. It's once they have somebody roped in to their product, it's very

difficult for them to get out. They're so right. People who started with Apple and who never experienced

anything else don't actually realize that there's other phones out there that don't cost thousands

of dollars. Seriously. I thought all phones cost that much. Well, nope. No, they don't.

There are phones. But good luck getting out of Apple. Tell me about it. Tell me about it.

There are phones that you don't have to wait in line for weeks for. You can walk into a cricket

wireless and just buy a phone for 500 bucks. And it's a decent phone. You can also buy the DVD of

a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving for the same price as an Apple subscription cost. So just to keep that

in mind, if people are curious. And then you can watch it every every time you want to. Yeah.

That is without commercials. I think that, you know, a good to my point that Apple doesn't know

necessarily how to advertise or how to reach people. If they really wanted to reach people,

they did, they did just put this out there for free on Thanksgiving. Like they don't need. That's

what what's 10 bucks more to Apple? Like the couple of families out there, let's even give them

a little bit of benefit of the doubt. Let's say three out of 10 families in America are going to

buy this. That's 30 bucks. Like a big deal. Like you can give this away for free and get a lot

more PR-wise and get a lot more free advertising from that than you are from actually doing it this

way. You're not understanding your base. You're not understanding your audience. It drives me crazy

advertising. There's some magnificent advertising and people in that industry. And then there's the

people that live in a bubble and don't seem to know what it's like to be a human being anymore.

A lot of that exists in Apple. For a company that that's that big. Like you said, they would get

better PR if they just said, you know what? Anybody can watch this for free on Thanksgiving.

Anybody without strings. Don't attach the strings because there's actually I would think a

better chance of them getting more customers sign up for their product by offering that free.

Then they're going to get but unhappy customers who, okay, I'm going to sign up for the seven

day free trial. So I can watch this and then I have to remember to cancel it. And for the thousands

of people who forget to cancel it and they get a few extra hundred or thousands of dollars or

whatever. And very many unhappy customers. Yeah. These companies to all these companies out there.

I'm telling you, nobody wants to jump through hoops. Nobody wants to download your app. No.

If they do, they're already got it. They already got it. Or they're going to download it and

delete it right away. And when they when they do that and then they forget, you're going to have

angry customers who are then going to, you know, bad mouth your company. Yeah. Yeah.

Which they had a bad experience. Yeah. If you just make it simple, the simpler the better,

the better when it comes to any of these kind of things. Giveaways, anything like that.

It's just the overwhelming majority of human beings, especially the coveted 18 to 34, 18 to

27 market, have told us over and over and over and over again. Just make it simple. Don't make

me download this. Don't make me cue our code that. Just get it to me. Just you'll make it simple.

That's it. And the simpler, the better. And maybe I'll sign up for your product. Yeah. Yeah.

We will take a quick break in just a moment. And when we come back, we're going to get into how

holiday music can affect your shopping, your holiday shopping. I'll tell you, if I hear Christmas

music before Halloween, I'm not going to buy anything. But I do want to talk a little bit about

our schedule here coming up on Thursday and Friday this week, Melissa. Oh, good. We've got some

great stuff. We have exciting things coming for you. Yeah. Yeah. Let's tell them about how Thursday is

going to roll out. Yeah. Thursday morning, we're going to have country music on Whisk Country 105

during the sunrise show. We're going to have that regular country music playing then on WFHR

from eight to nine. We're going to have a marathon of kitchen open segments.

We've had so much fun with this segment over the over the last year plus because we've been

doing this for over a year now, James. Can you believe that? That's awesome. I did not know that.

So I'm going to have fun. And actually, this is on my to-do list today because I have to,

you know, obviously, I have to get done. But I'm going to I'm going through to find the perfect

segments for your Thanksgiving day. We did some great ones last year around Thanksgiving.

They have to do with the foods for Thanksgiving. So I'm going to put together a montage of kitchen

open segments for the eight o'clock hour. And then the nine o'clock hour, tell us what set has

in store for there. Yeah. We're going to have some of our best up from directors cut. We're going

to look forward to some of that. That's going to be fun. And including our art net special that we

did our little Thursday or is that Friday? Oh, is that Friday? Yeah. What am I making?

One of the two. One of them is going to be autumn songs from set faces. I'm sorry. Thursday is autumn

songs from set faces. The music. Yes. Okay. Good. Sorry. And I couldn't remember exactly. No,

you got it. You got it. And then so we'll be doing that in the nine o'clock hour on Thursday.

Then on Friday, we will have that. Yeah. We'll have a similar lineup. We'll have the music on

IRI and then another a different montage segment of kitchen's open and then set faces or directors

cut with our art net. We're going to have two radio dramas on Friday because I am definitely

including the leftover container segment that we did. I love it. I love it. It's going to be so

much fun. So I won't be with you physically. We'll be here in spirit and be with you throughout

your holiday week here. Looking forward to that. That's going to be fun. Of course, we'll have some

great programming on the radio dial for you as well outside of that. Kicking off tomorrow,

we've got Wisconsin men's basketball part of this tournament that they actually kicked it off

yesterday. Part of that tournament. Tomorrow at 7.05, we'll have the Luke Fickle show looking

forward to that. On Friday at 6.30 right here in WFHR, Wisconsin men's hockey hosting Alaska

Anchorage. Yeah, it's going to be good. And then at WIRI at 7.40, we kick off the cranberry

classic, the 39th annual cranberry classic. Is that basketball? Yes. High school basketball,

our friends over at Assumption High School host this every year. They've been doing it for 39

years. We had Bob Brickhouser, your 2023 Sports Commission MVP Award winner Bob Brickhouser.

Congratulations to him. Gosh, I was looking so forward to having him on the air with this

yesterday and I knew what I was going to do to him, but he didn't. No, man, it was great.

Bob was a great sport about it too. Congratulations to him. And to his son and to everybody

over at Assumption who do such a great job with the cranberry classic every year, we encourage you

to get your tickets and check out the cranberry classic. It's a full day of basketball, Friday,

Saturday. Be sure to check it out and support our local sports, support our local high school teams

on the uses girls and boys, varsity and JV basketball on the girls side. You got Assumption,

Columbus, Catholic, Nicosah, and Wyoming, go freemont on the boys side, Assumption, Columbus,

Columbus, Catholic, Nicosah, and Port Edwards all going to be there. You know, I have concessions,

50, 50 raffles, all kinds of great things going on. Sounds like fun. If you can't catch it,

we'll have the games for you right on WIRI. Again, 740, our pregame kicks off for Port Edwards at

Assumption on Friday and then on Saturday, 1230 right here at WFHR, the Battle for Paul Bunyan's

Axe, Wisconsin, First Minnesota. Wow. Yeah, big game. That'll be a good game.

Going to be a good one. And you can enjoy it from the comfort of your armchair.

Yeah, that WIRI at 740 Assumption or Port Edwards will take on the winner of the other game,

the other game there and we'll have continued to have the final game of the cranberry classic

right there in WIRI for you. It's going to be a good one. Nice.

Looking forward to it. Good stuff all weekend long for you on right here at WFHR, locally grown

radio. Welcome back everyone.

I am still living with your goals, lonely and dreaming of the worst cold.

Melissa and James here with you. I hope you're having a great start to your Tuesday out there,

everybody. What's that music doing to you? Music making you think of the 90s a little bit,

little ever clear, little one hit wonders maybe. Never clear heard a couple of songs, but anyway.

Does it get you, does it get you moving? Does it get you motivated maybe to do some things? Maybe

some shopping? Who knows? 1,000 five people were surveyed on music's impact on their holiday

shopping. Real quick, 1,000 and five people. What was with the extra five there?

They were going for 1,000, but like they had five extra people. We could have five more.

They go ahead. It was the people conducting the survey. I want to take it to. That's it.

Yeah, but nicely done. Yes. They answered this survey about music's impact on their

holiday shopping and almost 1 and five avoid going into a store if holiday music is playing.

Wow. 1 and five yikes. That's probably me sometimes, especially depending on what the music

sounds like. I'm curious then on the other side of that, are people encouraged to come into

businesses that are playing Christmas music? I wonder. I wonder what the stat on that one is.

I know of at least one person, Terry Johnson, who might actually go into the store because of it.

I don't know. Maybe she would. People are more likely to go into a store or stay longer if

these genres of music are playing. Pop music, 43% more likely to stay in the store. 37% for

rock, 26% for alternative, 23% for classical, and 21% for hip hop. Really? Interesting. Yeah.

Yeah. And they're more likely to leave if they hear these genres. 40% would leave if they

heard metal. 35% would leave if they heard gospel. 34% would leave if they heard hip hop. 34

also would leave if they heard country and 23% if they heard punk. Wow. Interesting. Okay.

So these are people choosing to... I don't shop that way, honestly. Yeah. If I'm going into a store,

there's a reason. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm in there to get whatever I'm getting and I don't really care.

I might notice what music is playing, but it's not going to change why I'm there.

So I thought part of what was interesting about this is kind of piggybacking on our article

yesterday that you brought us about earworms and how songs can get in our heads. And I've noticed

that the way that usually happens to me is when I'm at a store or a business that's playing...

Okay. Used to YouTube, okay. You get in your car and you're like, that song is still there.

Yep. Yep. And in half the time, it's not even like a good version. It's like a music version

of the song. Kidbop. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Something like that stuck in my head or something.

Never fails. So I don't worry about genres, but it's more so that. And I certainly wouldn't leave

a store because of whatever music they're playing, whether it is gospel or other...

Oh, they're playing Kenny G. Yeah. Get out of here quick. I don't know. It's too late by that

point. It's already in your head. I will just listen to the whole song. I will say if I was a

business though, and I may... There's a difference, I think, between a store that you expect people

to be in and out of in a store. Maybe you sell knickknacks or items like that and you want people

to pop around and hang out in your store. Or you're a store in the mall. That's where I picture

people choosing to go into a store or not versus driving to the grocery store. I'm doing your

shopping and leaving. I don't know if these stores even exist anymore, but there was a rainfall

store back when I was a kid. There was like some kind of like one of those stores that you could buy

those the woodsticks that the rain sticks at and stuff. Okay, yeah. So kind of a novelty shop

where they're like knickknacks and house decor. They had like Amazon rainforest playing in the

background. In the background, you're adding animal sounds, some light flute music. It's kind of

nice. It was kind of like it just kind of carried the mall. Yeah. I don't think if I ran a business,

I don't think I'd play music, but I think I might do something like that. Something like that.

Something that there's, it'd be pretty hard to offend somebody with. I can't think of any

business where you're okay with losing any part of your, you know, possible consumers,

possible customers. Just because of music you're playing or something like that. Well, and there

is a lot of research. Obviously, you know, you just read a bunch of statistics about what people

think about music, but there is a lot of research out there for businesses to look into of

what type of music you should play in your store. But it also depends on what you're selling.

Good point. Yes. We'll get into the top holiday songs in a second, but first, let's take a

call or good morning. What's on your mind? Well, I had my point, but Melissa just took it right out

of my mouth. Make it anyway. Reinforce my point. Yes. Yes. Well, you know, you talk about,

you know, what you're selling. You know, think about the tea shop or think about some of those

not really. Oh, yeah. What's that one that kind of sells like to the guy's beautiful that's

do more like skateboarding. Oh, sure. Yeah. Yeah. I know what you're talking about. You're going to

play, you know, songs like that. When you go, let's take you going to Yonkers, you're going to have

pride more of the elevator type music and pop music, maybe. I'm not going to change my shop

because they're playing something wrong. I mean, I have a mission. I'm going to go get it. And

I know what I'm going to get. And I don't care if they're playing hip hop or country or

anything. Yeah. It sounds just like me. Same here. And you put it the perfect way. You're on a

mission. You're on a mission and you're getting in and out. You're sticking to your list in your

head. Yes. I know exactly the last thing I'm thinking about is the music that's playing around

there and everything. Do they have a Spencer? Do they have a Spencer's gift anymore? Because if I

walk into Spencer's, I want to hear five finger death punch. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Now, you go

into a certain store and you're expecting to hear certain types of music and everything. I get

that part too. Yeah. You're going to go into like a champ sports or things like that. You're in

here. You're in right here like anthem rocks or. Yeah. Yeah. You play it too. What you're,

you know, your clientele is great. I don't think people really know. No. No. I think it's a lot

to do about nothing. You know, talking loud and saying nothing kind of stuff. But we all notice it.

Yeah. And we got to talk to you, man. So, you know, what's worth it? There's what we're talking

about. Have a great Thanksgiving. All right. Thank you. Yeah. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you

for reinforcing my point. Yes. There we go. Yeah. There's people. Our listeners think like me

or at least this one. There we go. Yeah. At least what presently? These are the top

holiday songs found on shopping playlist on Spotify. Winter Wonderland from Tony Bennett.

Oh, that's a good one. Yeah. White Christmas from Bing Crosby. Oh, another good one. Yeah.

Slayeride from the Ronets. Okay. The Christmas song from Net King Cole. I must have. Yeah.

Yep. Yep. Yeah. And it's roasting on an open fire. Have yourself a merry little Christmas from

Sam Smith. My favorite, but it's got to be Judy Garland. Yep. Yep. Agreed. Not in against,

I don't know much. I don't know. Sam Smith. So I don't know. But I'll definitely say Judy

Garland is the one. Yes. The top artists are Taylor Swift, Michael Boublier, penetronics,

Arya Grande. Penetronics. Yeah. Penetronics. Thank you. And one direction. Really? Well,

I'd choose penetronics out of that. Sam? Yeah. Same here. Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. Michael Boublier

also has a nice Christmas album and he has a gorgeous voice. So he's a great crooner. He's a great

singer. Yep. And I got nothing against him. I just got a little burnt out from him from an ex

that I dated that her mom and her really. But whenever I hear him now, it doesn't bother me.

It doesn't. Well, yeah, because he he was really like overplayed for a while there. Yeah.

Not his fault this Saturday. No, no. A couple of quick programming notes. Real quick. I did

want to send a shout out to Michael. Mike in Wisconsin Rapids who won himself a free turkey from

our friends of the West. The winner of our turkey turkey turkey. Yeah. One himself turkey from

the West Grand IGA. Big shout out to our friends over at the West Grand IGA. Be sure to head over

there for all your turkey needs. That's a great store. Yes. I've gone there basically the whole time

I've lived on the west side of Rapids. That's the only grocery store I go to. They have a wonderful

deli. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. If you are looking for lunch, like that's the place to go. They've

always got they have such good chefs of cooks over there. They do such good. I've never had a bad

meal from there. Oh, yeah. No, it's wonderful. Join them at 1021 West Grand Avenue in Wisconsin

Rapids. Just be don't go there expecting to get a ton of doughnut holes. That's where I get my

doughnut holes. That's you buy them out everything. Buy them out. Buy them out. You do need to get

there early to get those doughnuts. They're always gone by the time I get there. They're always

gone. They're great doughnuts over there. Be sure to check that out. But another note I wanted to

mention and a big thank you to Pam Hilke for letting us know about this. There have been missing

child alerts announcements on WFHR this morning. And if you wonder why those are playing and we

continue to talk, it's because we cannot hear them in our headphones. So we do apologize for that

if it seems a little abrasive or a little kind of clunky or anything. We're still working out some

of the kinks in the behind the scenes here and everything. Do apologize for that. But we

it honestly, I don't care. The missing children, that definitely comes first. Yeah, talk over us.

Yep. Absolutely. You want? Yeah. Yeah. For now, we'll get to our state and local news. We'll come

back and we're talking vampires. Because what goes better with Thanksgiving? Really? Thanks.

Really? It's not at all leftover article I had from Halloween. It's not at all that. It's

coming up on the morning show here at WFHR locally grown radio.

Welcome back everyone. Morning show here at WFHR locally grown radio.

The heat is, well, the heat is technically on because it's cold outside and everybody has their

heaters on that side. Exactly. It's a different type of heat that's on that. Let us dive into this one.

There's not many things that go hand in hand more with Thanksgiving than vampires. We all know this.

No, wait a minute. No, we got that wrong. It's Halloween. I'm so sorry. I apologize.

I was, we talked so much like when we're leading up to a holiday. We'll do this with Christmas. We'll

do it with all the things. We talk endlessly that the week of especially about Thanksgiving

this Thanksgiving that I did think it'd be kind of fun to throw some different things out there.

You know, just for fun. Who doesn't like vampires? The vampire experts at lawnlove.com

because they are the ones that you go to. If you have any vampire questions, you think right away

lawnlove.com. That's the first thing you think of. Bram Storker's Dracula and then lawnlove.com.

Those are the first two references you have for vampires. They conducted a study to

determine the best places for vampires based on 17 factors. Wow. Okay. No blood centers,

casket suppliers, homes with basements, vampire friendly clubs. This is one of the weirdest

lists I've ever seen. They also, but we are talking about vampires. Right. Right. They,

which by the way, spoiler alert don't exist. They're not real. Not real everybody.

Now, if there is any, we can have fun with this segment. You know, I apologize. If there are

any vampires out there and they happen to be awake at 9.30 in the morning, please call up

715-424-2600. I should not be so dismissive. I should not just throw that out there like that.

You know, I don't know. I haven't met everybody. Maybe there is. Who knows? This is true.

I'm guessing there isn't. But please, please do call up if you are. We'd love to have this

here for me. 745-424-2600. They looked at also local deterrents like average percentage of

sunshine, churches, urban spice shops with garlic festivals. Of course, garlic festivals.

I love it. So we are moving to this new neighborhood, me and my family. They've got the garlic

special, don't it? They moved to the one town that like celebrate, like, has a garlic parade

every year or something like that. Why are not moving to that town? In the end, they found the

best city for vampires is New York City. I would recommend Brooklyn, as we have seen a great,

there was a great documentary that Eddie Murphy and his brother Charlie did of vampire Brooklyn.

Has proven that Brooklyn, New York, it seems to be a good place, seems to be a good spot.

Documentary. The rest of the top 10, the best cities are Chicago. Columbus, Ohio, Philadelphia,

Los Angeles, Houston, Portland, Madison, Wisconsin. Really? Yeah. Seattle and Omaha, Nebraska.

But, huh? Chicago and Madison getting in there. Chicago and Madison. Yeah. Look,

though, you just, I just mentioned two of my favorite cities in the whole world. Chicago,

obviously, my favorite, because I'm a bi, I'm biased, but Madison is genuinely in my top five,

favorite cities in America. Easily. Oh, it's a great city. I love Madison. I've been going there

since I was a kid. I've spent a lot of time there. Love Madison to death. It's a big city that

doesn't feel like a big city. Yeah. Yeah. There's so many beautiful spots to it and everything.

All of this being said, if I'm a vampire, the last thing I'm doing is living in the Midwest.

Why is that? The weather and there is a lot of garlic, a lot of garlic in the Midwest,

a lot of garlic. We love garlic here. There is almost no chance you're not going to run into

somebody that has some garlic in the house or in a meal or something like that. And if you're a

vampire, you want to, you want to, you know, you know, you know, that there is a stereotype to you.

You're going to try to introduce yourself to your neighbors. You're going to try to be friends

and get along with people over a lasagna. Yeah. And what's going to happen? Somebody's going to

have some garlic in the house. You're going to be in trouble. The rest of the top 10 worst are

Odessa, Texas, Rancho Cordova, California, and Sparks, Nevada.

All right. Arizona probably the amount of sunlight. Yeah. Yeah. Arizona was also thrown in there.

They included a 500 cities at the very bottom. Yeah. So not quite the list. Not a lot of places to go

if you're a vampire here in America. Not as easy. Now, I do think that, you know, saying

Transylvania feels very stereotypical. So I'm not going to throw that out there. I'm not going to

say the vampire should go to Transylvania. I'm not going to do it. Okay. As a random as this

quote study is, it had a purpose. They say that they're promoting it to encourage blood donations

during the national shortage. So all of this truly does actually have some bit of a good

intention to it. And we do have a blood drive going on today in Wisconsin rabbit. Yes. Melissa,

you saw right where I was going with this. Looking for a way to help others, but maybe don't have

much time or money to spare. Blood donations cost nothing and takes less than an hour and saves

countless lives. The blood center of North Central Wisconsin will hold the blood drive today.

Right here in Wisconsin, Rapids. And it actually is kicking off in about 20 minutes. It goes from

10 to 2, I believe. 10 to 3. 10 to 3. 10 to 3. Yeah. All right. The drive will take place at room

111 of the former Eastern High School and their high school music room. If you ever went to

the link east like I did, 311 Lincoln Street. I still call it the music room, even though it

hasn't been that in 20 years. Also today. Yeah. Appointments are encouraged to promote social

distancing, but walkins are very welcome. 866 566 5900. If you'd like to make an appointment 866 566 5900.

If you're unable to today next Monday that November 27th from 2 to 7, they will also be taking

blood donations. Yeah. And they want you to enter from the Lincoln side now as opposed to coming in

from the back. And they'll have sandwich boards up to direct you to where to where to go to get to

music room. Also coming up in Mosenee on the 24th from noon to 5 over at the Mosenee

Brewing Company. You can don't you can donate blood. That is an option. And of course our friends at

the Stevens Point Blood donation center are taking donations today from noon to 7. They are

located at 32.01 C Main Street right there in beautiful Stevens Point. We'll continue to tell

you more about other donation opportunities for you coming up. We will take a quick commercial

break. We're going to come back and have some more fun. Let's see. We'll get into older

adults and utensils. We're going to talk about that a little bit as we are getting ready to use

quite a few utensils in the next couple of days. Indeed. Coming up here on the morning show at WFHR

locally grown radio. All right. Welcome back everybody. Morning show here at WFHR locally grown

radio. James and Melissa hanging out with you. Thanks for joining us. Happy to have you here.

Always gets me that song. Always gets me. Sorry. Didn't mean to talk about it. No, that's all right.

Some about the J. Giles band. Some about. So we're going to be using a lot of utensils in the next

couple of days. But which ones? And how does it change between the ages? Most people will cook for

Thanksgiving or friends giving from their own kitchens. But some people will be working within

unfamiliar territory. And that person's kitchen may or may not have a potato masher.

There's some interesting new research out on kitchen utensils. And it includes data on how common

various utensils are. More than 90% of people have the basics, can openers, measuring cups,

measuring spoons and all that spatula isn't it? At least 80% have steak knives, cutting boards,

whisks, graders and all those things. But then there is a drop off. Only 73% of people have a

rolling pin. Only 69% of people have a potato masher or a food thermometer.

14% have a garlic press. See, 47% of a garlic press going back to the vampire thing. See,

what did I tell you? And 43% have a juicer. And only 35% have a mandolin. A mandolin.

Man, mandolin. That's a slicer. Right. I was thinking to get the guitar for

15% of people don't know if they have one of those or not.

Okay. They also broke the results down by age. And not surprisingly, older adults have more

kitchen utensils than millennials and Gen Z. Yes. There are a few exceptions,

risers, zesters, juicers and especially chopsticks, which was the biggest disparity.

60% of young adults say that they have chopsticks in the kitchen compared to 38% of people 45

and older. That makes sense. Yeah. It's just interesting. That's an interesting one to me.

And I don't know necessarily why, just interesting. I was a little taken back by some of this,

but once you kind of sit back and think about it, it makes sense. A lot of these things and maybe,

I don't know, maybe it depends on the income of your family, but a lot of these things are

handed down, I would think. My mom, when I got my first department, my mom went out and bought

new, like a new can opener and measuring cups and gave me her old ones. That kind of thing.

But I don't think I ever owned a rolling pin and I find that kind of it. I never thought about

it before, but yeah, I don't think I have. Well, and if you don't have a use for it, if you're not

making pastry at home, why would you have one or pasta? Because you can use a rolling pin to make pasta,

which seems more likely for you. Yeah. And that's kind of why I thought I would have one. Honestly,

off the top of my head, I'm like, Oh, I'm sure I have. No, I don't know. There are other things you

can use in place of, if you have perfectly round glasses, some people have, and they're covered

for drinking glasses that can be used as a rolling pin or a jar or heck, a tin can. Yeah. Yeah.

You know, you can improvise for some of this stuff. I like what you're just doing there too. Yeah.

And so there's, there's plenty of, all things I've had to do in my past. I was going to ask. Okay.

But yes, I inherited my mother's rolling pin now. I have it in my drawer.

I think that that's, you know, there's not, back in the day, people used to be able to give their

kids houses and things. And that stuff hasn't been, that hasn't been the case since the 50s.

But when you can do that as a parent, there's very few things to feel as great as handing those

kind of things down and letting and then continuing use. There are still items that my mother and I

use that my grandmother and Nana used. I just this weekend used to drill that my papa used to use.

You know, there's so many of those kind of things that we, it's not just having the item to use,

but the people we think of when we're using that item. Well, and the other awesome thing is,

if you have something that was your grandfather's and it's still working now, because it was made

better than the stuff you can buy now. There you go. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So true. It's so true.

We got a then eight right story one. I got a doozy of one here. Airlines get made fun of for

serving food, even a dog wouldn't eat. But this is taking it a little far. Oh no. A photo of an

airline's in flight menu is all over social media because one of the appetizers listed was,

quote, imported dog food. Really? It's not some new policy where they feed your emotional

support animal. The menu was for people seated in business class. No less. What?

The appetizers listed on the menu include smoked pepper beef, vanilla shrimp,

okra, dried, I'm sorry, diced veggies and imported dog food.

But this has to be a mistake. The flight was the China Eastern Airlines and the good news is

they probably weren't serving dog food. Most people think it was an unfortunate transition,

a translation error. Okay. But they haven't fixed it yet either, though. So,

whoever posted the menu also got a shot of actual food and it does kind of resemble dog food a

little bit. It's not, but it looks a little like it. It's like Purina and cranberry sauce is

basically what it looks like. Yeah, that ain't right. That ain't right. I don't eat on

planes. Is it like a pate? That doesn't sound right. No, no. I just don't eat on planes.

I don't do it. I bring a food with me or I'll eat the peanuts maybe, but that's about it.

I don't know. I eat the plain food because I've paid a heck of a lot for that ticket.

Well, there you go. Yeah. See, I, um, and I'm never like, because you've flown to Hawaii and stuff.

I've never flown. I've never done anything like that before. If I'm on a flight like that,

I'm probably going to get pretty hungry and I'm probably going to eat what's ever in front of me.

Right. Yeah. Just may not order the dog food. That just may not order that.

Well, and if you're flying economy, which is what I always fly, you don't get a menu.

Right. Right. You get whatever they, I mean, they might give you a choice of, you know,

one A or B. Yeah. It's not, it's not like, hey, or please order off of this menu.

We got to get to a palli cleanser here. Let's get to some good stories of the day and we've

got that coming up for you today from three to four from midday magazine. We kicked things off

for the week with the perfect, I guess, Stephen and Katrina Hittner from Family Natural Foods.

Wonderful. Looking forward to them hanging out with us is going to be a good time and

poor Katrina. Everybody have a little empathy for her. She's got to put up with me back to back

days. She's going to be our co-host tomorrow on our morning shows. Uh, she'll do great.

We wrap up with at 330 Amy Fluno 211 director with the United Way of South Wind and the

Ames County is going to join us looking forward to that. Good, good, good. Always talk to,

a good to talk to our United Way and have Amy with us. So, uh, enjoy that a little bit.

A little bit like how you can get help in your community. Uh, a little bit later, uh, our sister

station, W.I. R.I. 105, Wisconsin, 655. Our pregame kicks off for Lincoln High School Girls basketball

as they host O'Claire North. Oh, high school sports. Michael and Seth Tag team and that one,

you know, it's going to sound good with those guys. Oh, yeah. It's going to be a good one.

Also want to remind you that we got some great events going on this tomorrow. Rekindle the spirit

kicks off. Good. Be a part of the by local holiday celebration festivities include parade,

holiday lights, In Veterans Park and Wisconsin Rapids and much more.

This will be going on tomorrow from 545 to 730. Join us as this kicks off. This beloved tradition

in downtown Wisconsin Rapids. Yes. And of course, be a great parade. We've got small business

Saturday kicking off this weekend as well. Mm-hmm. Yes. That is on Saturday the 25th.

Buy local support local. Get yourself that passport and get it filled out and maybe get

yourself some cool prizes just for buying local supporting local. Mm-hmm. It's a great event.

It is. And I'm going to interrupt you quick here, James. Um, the the amber alert that has been going

out is canceled. The children and the suspect have been found safe in Iowa. All right. All right.

Good. That's great. That is some good news, Melissa. Thank you for that. I appreciate it.

Also appreciate all of these all the all you out there and supporting all these local great

wonderful businesses. Keep it up everybody. Yes. I got a card here from Melissa that I'm going to

read. And this is from our friends at UW SP Stevens Point. Nice. Our food drive for UW SP

students was a great success. Your help and generosity were reasons it was so successful. We

wanted to let you know and your efforts were very much appreciated. Your ad was really terrific.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you from Ron Klein. UW SP Men's Basketball Coaches Committee.

Oh, awesome. Good. Big thing. Big thing you do our pointers out there. We appreciate them. Yeah.

Great job on helping to support our future by helping these kids that are trying to get their

education to be fed. Just man. Okay. I'm not going to keep moving. Keep moving. They

shouldn't need to worry about food, but okay. Yeah. So I want to get to some local or some

world good stories. A South Carolina man's TikTok proposal is going viral because of how he

incorporated his girlfriend's four kids into it. His name is Josh. He gave them each a t-shirt.

So when they lined up, it read, can we call Josh Dad? Oh, they'd apparently been asking their

mom when he'd be their dad. So it was kind of an inside joke. She walked in, started crying,

said, yes, immediately. He also bought each kid their own ring to wear and got down on one

knee to for them as well. Oh, that's really sweet. Yeah. That's beautiful. That got me. That's

really sweet. Two World War Two vets from North Carolina named a Millard Denson and Joe Stroud

just met up after searching for each other for 76 years. Oh, my. They met in a Navy when they

were 17 and they were best friends. They're both 96 now. A family friend helped Millard track Joe

down this summer. They've been talking on the phone for the past three months, but met up in person

last Friday. What a wonderful reunion. Both of those back. That one gets me. Yeah. Both of

those back-to-back, man. That ain't right. Wait, go James. Make us cry on a Tuesday morning. I

would like to apologize to everybody. I am so sorry for making you tear up. But no, your hearts are

happy. Yeah. If it helps at all, it got me too. And Target sent a bunch of stuff to a woman

in Minnesota by mistake last week, more than 140 packages. Oh, I saw something about this. I'm

curious. Yeah. And they were all filled with reading glasses. It turned out they had an issue with

a vendor. They used the wrong address. Target reached out to her and gave her a $250 gift card

for the hassle. Oh, wow. This next part is where it gets you. They told her they're donating all the

glasses to charity. It's what she was planning to do with it when they, you know, instead of the

return. Oh, yeah. Cause it's like, what do you do with all these glasses? Target could have asked

for them to be returned. They could have even paid for the return of, you know, packaging and all

that. But instead they decided, no, you keep them and put them in a charity there. And we're

going to give you a gift card. Sit on your target. This is what we're talking about when we are

saying earlier about businesses being smart about this stuff. Um, it may be it costs them more,

but look at what the PR that they're getting from this. We're talking about a target in Minnesota.

I mean, you know, it just, it's right there for you, everybody. Advertisers, marketers, businesses.

And it's a blip in their finances, but not even a blip. Yeah. A big shout out to all of our great

listeners out there. Thanks so much for joining us. Melissa, thank you for a great show. And

congrats to Mike for winning the shotgun turkey. Congrats, Mike. Uh, and a big thank you to our

friends at the West Grand IGA. Go ahead and get all your turkey needs over there. Melissa,

you have a great Thanksgiving. Yeah, you too. And thank you to our collars today.

Appreciate all the great Thanksgiving, James. Yeah, you too. Uh, we'll talk to you soon and

later. Be good to each other right here. Oh, Pam, you take it. W F H R Wisconsin Rapids 1320 AM
