I believe. The piano gal Marta Hansen, she has been making original music for decades.
Marta is a songwriter, singer, pianist and a ukulele player and she may have even tuned a piano
for you. Marta loves playing her favorite 90s covers in a set to release an album this month
called Strip and you might know her as the piano gal but we know her as the master of mom rock.
Marta Hansen, welcome back to MagSync Radio. Hey, thanks for having me. It's always a pleasure.
You know, we just heard a cover of Creep and it features your son. Talk about both your sons
actually. Talk about recording one of your sons. Yeah, it was so special and amazing. I've always
wanted to do a song or, you know, multiple songs with my kids. My oldest is a senior in high
school. He's 17 and my youngest is a freshman. He's 14 and they're both pianists and my youngest
is also a plays violin and so we collaborated as a trio and this my oldest played piano I sang
and my youngest played violin on the track and I wrote the arrangement for them and we we went
into audio for the arts and now we have this really special beautiful song that we did together that
we'll kind of have is just this really special experience. And recorded with Audrey. With Audrey,
yeah. Over at audio for the arts. That's so cool. Yeah. Marta, how do you get started with music?
What's your backstory? Oh, man. I started playing piano when I was seven and then singing shortly
after that and then I went to I've been playing piano and singing for, you know, my whole life and
songwriting and then I went to UW Madison and I actually have a music ed degree and I was a choir
director for a time and then yeah, about six years and then I started to learn how to tune pianos
in my 30s and I've been doing that now for about 15 years. Like how do you just like fall into learning
how to tune pianos? It's a much longer story than I made it. Yeah, it's longer than that short
explanation. But I was teaching private lessons and I took an interest in tuning my own figured out
how incredibly difficult it was. Wow. Took a break, came back to it and then decided I was kind of
commit to learning the craft and the art of piano technology in. I stuck to it and now it's my full
time job. Wow, that's pretty cool. Yeah. That must be crazy and you're not blind. You know,
you shouldn't think of a piano tuner as you know, the guy comes over and it's like pitch perfect.
Yeah, no, no, I just a lot different today. Technology. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But I do tune by ear. So. Wow. Yeah.
Well, that's incredible. That's an art then. It is. I think so. And what's what's the name of your
business now? Still piano gal. Piano gal shop. Yep. How do we find that online? We need a piano
too. It is the piano gal shop dot com. The piano gal shop dot com. Okay. What is mom rock? Oh, so
my husband and I have had many a conversation on what my genre is. And it's really like a short
way of saying I play I make original music and covers of my favorite rock music that you at my
age now, you would put on your sweatpants and have a glass of wine or a THC drink and listen to
on your couch. But when we were in our 20s, we would have seen it in the mosh pit. You know what I mean?
So like I've stripped it. I've taken all my favorite rock vibes and made it into something that
is more fitting for the stage of my life that I'm in now. Well, we played your original music on
Maxine Gradio now for several years and you often play shows and feature your favorite 90s rock
songs that you just talked about. And now you're set to release an album of those songs in your mom
rock style. Yes. Tell us about the new record. What inspired it and where we'll be able to find it
online. Yeah. Okay. So yeah, it's called stripped, which you know, stripped down, covers and
arrangements for piano vocal or piano or vocal ukulele of all my favorite 90s tunes in a
couple early 2000 songs that really kind of shaped my musical style and my musical preferences
and just me growing up. And it's how I perform live. A lot of my previous albums and tracks have
more instrumentation to them. But when I go play, it's usually a solo gig. And I wanted to record
an album that was a true reflection of if you were going to go see me in a bar, see me in a coffee shop.
What I truly sound like, which is and these are all songs that I've honed
at live gigs that I've arranged and made my own. And I wanted to have an album that was like,
hey, this is like, if I went in some art at this show, this is what we would hear. And this is
that. Yeah. Oh, that's cool. It's very authentic. Yeah. You will be performing live at the
Sunperry Farmers Market on June 6th, and July 25th. How do we keep up with you online? And
where do we find you at the farmers market? Yes. So all my gigs update updates on, you know,
released music, future gigs, all that kind of stuff is on my website, which is marda Hansen
Music.com. And that's H-A-N-S-E-N. Yes, E-N. Yes. And then I'm also Marda Hansen Music on Facebook
and Instagram. And I'm on BN Camp as well, if you look up my name on there. And yeah, you can
find all that information. Farmers markets are Saturdays 10 a.m. to noon in Canary Square in
Sunperry. So I'll be there at those two dates. And then check my website because I will have an
album release performance coming up at TBD right now. How is that Farmers Market Audit Sunperry?
It's amazing. I've never been to that one. It's amazing. If you want something, you want everything
you need, but it's a little less crazy. Yeah, then downtown. Yes. And you don't want to walk a
mile from your parking spot. The Sunperry one is so, so awesome. You get so much great stuff.
And there's always live music. I'm actually the music coordinator for all of them. So I book
all the other musicians as well. Oh, nice. Yeah. And it's become, it's quite a destination to come
down there. So I highly recommend it. Who else do you have playing there this year? Bear in the forest.
I always get bear in the forest. Oh, man. I've got page, page clever. Okay. And I've got
an acapella group. I've got a marimba player. I've got Ed Ford. He's a local like Bluegrass singer.
Oh, that marimba player. He's always out here in front of an overture. He plays Black Sabbath.
Yeah. It is Eric. Yeah. Black Sabbath. Eric DeLos Santos. Yes.
Floyd. Yeah. I've heard him play war pigs. I've heard him play the entirety of a dance
macabre out there. Yeah. A whole thing. He plays there every year. Just a whole slew of just
of a wide variety of musicians. It's really awesome. Oh, that sounds so fun. Yeah. Well, you know,
every time you're here, you bring a different instrument, piano, guitar, and this time Yucca Lele.
You're going to play one of the songs you recorded on your upcoming album of your favorite cover
songs. Tell us about the song you picked to play tonight. And you know, why are you going to play it?
What? Tell us about this song. Yeah. So I'm going to be playing my cover arrangement of All Apologies
by Nirvana. Nirvana just is and will always be one of my favorite bands. And there's I made,
I'm very partial to this arrangement because it's almost like it's this weird juxtaposition
with the lyrics because it's almost like a lullaby type of version. Yeah. Very ethereal, very light.
And it's just, yeah, I just love it. And Nirvana will always be like top three bands for me.
So. All right. Well, thanks so much for coming down tonight. We really appreciate it. Let's
let's check you out, playing on one of your songs from your upcoming album Strip. A cover
of Nirvana's All Apologies. You're listening to a mini live from the man city on Maxing Gradio.
What else could I write? I don't have to write. What else should I be? All Apologies.
In the sun, in the sun, I feel this one, in the sun, in the sun, Mary, Mary, I wish I was like you.
Easily, I'm used to find my nest of salt. Everything's my fault. I'll take all the
name. Like the sea foam shade, sunburned with breeze of burn, joking on the ashes of her enemies,
in the sun, in the sun, I feel this one, in the sun, in the sun, Mary, Mary, Mary,
Mary, Mary, I yeah, yeah, yeah. All in all is all we are. All in all is all we are.
All in all is all we are.
