Taylor Schereck rips it up on Live From The Madcity on Max Ink Radio

Taylor Shirk is a full-time musician from the Madison area who is known for his solo shows,

dual shows with Uncle Vaughn, and is also one of the main singers and guitar players

of the 90s rock tribute band Fufu Dolls. Taylor's last year released his very first ever

5-song EP titled Lost and Found. You can find that in all its streaming platforms,

and now he's currently working on his first full-length album called The Cycle of the Heart.

They'll be releasing in October of this year. Taylor is from a musical family, and last time he

was in he brought his mom to sing, but this time Taylor is solo me, and just Taylor and his guitar

and right here on Live From The Man City, presented by the Aaron Weber Group. Taylor,

welcome back to MagSync Radio. Hey, thanks for having me. I appreciate you having me on the show again.

It's good to be here. And Taylor, tell us about your musical family and how you got started in music.

Well, so if you listen to the song Music is Family, which is a song that I wrote.

Oh yeah, we play that all day. Yeah, I know you guys do. Thank you so much.

So, verse 1 is about my dad, how he inspired me to play guitar, and verse 1 is also about how his

dad inspired him to play guitar. Wow. Then verse 2 is about how mom inspired me to be a vocalist and

how her dad, and his infamous line was always open up your mouth and sing. So I added that as a

lyric in at the end of verse 2. So they were the two who, so dad taught me guitar, mom taught me

vocals. I got to give a huge shout out to my stepmom Kathy as well, because she taught me a lot

about vocals as well. And then in verse 3, we talk about Uncle Vaughn because I feel like he's the

one who really showed me how to become a musician. Oh, we're going to learn about him later too.

Yeah, we tried to get him on the show this time, but unfortunately he was not available. But one

of these days, we're going to twist his arm to come down here and it'll be a fun time.

Wow, that's incredible. And now you just guitar and vocals, or do you play other instruments too?

Well, so that's a loaded question. So on my album, I'm in the process of literally learning how

to play piano right now. Really? Wow. Yeah. And I'm not at the point right now where I'm ready to

like unleash that live. And honestly, like, I like to add unleash. I mean, honestly, and like I'm

still not even opposed to the idea of maybe getting together with a piano teacher and having

them teach me the fundamentals because I really do like piano a lot. And a big reason why this

album is happening. So I'm a huge fan of this band called Sleep Token. And they're kind of a band

that does a little bit of everything. You could classify them as a metal band, but they really do

cross all sorts of genres. And I saw them live at the all-state arena in Rosemont, Illinois,

just outside of Chicago, and the bass player of Fufu dolls and I went there. And I'm not sugarcutting

this. It's the best concert I've ever been to. And like, I was, you know, already in the process

of writing, but after seeing them live, I was like, no, I got to like do this now and do it a lot.

So the impetus for the album, well, now you just mentioned Fufu dolls and you've played with the

remedy. And then you have a duo with your uncle Vaughn. Have you been in any other past bands in

the Madison area? Did I get the list correct? You did get the list correct. I mean, there was like,

you know, maybe for a little bit of time, there was some guys I was jamming with when I was around

like 21 or even before that. And we just never got out of the basement, unfortunately. And then

everyone just kind of went their own separate ways after a while. Now, you're doing music full time.

What does that look like to you and what challenges do you face doing that? Well, currently,

this time of the year, dry air equals dry throats and my water I have here. Three bottles. Yeah.

Yeah. It's ridiculous sometimes. But I, you know, I would say like one thing as well that can

sometimes be a challenge is that, you know, I love doing this. And sometimes I can go a little too

crazy with booking myself. I've learned over the years that you don't have to do 20 plus shows in

July just because you can burn out. So yeah, no, I've had moments where I've definitely gotten

pretty burnt out by the end of the summer. And then normally in the winter time is when I kind

of slow down a little bit and focus on usually what I do is I focus on writing new songs. But now I

have all of these songs and now I'm in the studio. So I've been actually really busy for it being

my slow season, if you will. Well, not, you know, and as a musician, do you think you get more

from record sales merch or from performing? Where would you say you concentrate on? I right now,

I definitely focus on performing more. I mean, I, you know, I made maybe like a whopping $37 off

of my music so far. Well, it's a start. It's a start. Yeah. And I am in the, so I do have my own

logo. Oh, that's the wrong pick. I was going to show you guys. I got to create it a lightning,

essentially like a neon heart that has a lightning bolt in it. That's the logo that I'm rocking

with these days. So I'm definitely going to do a merch line of that. So I think as I progress

along, it'll be kind of a combination of merch and live performance. And I mean, I'm always

going to be looking to go into the studio and get the albums out and get the album version of

the songs out there because that's, of course, the kind that everybody listens to and remembers

forever. So, well, let's get to live music from the Mad City with Taylor Sherik presented by

the Aaron Webberg group, the first song that you have for us tonight. It's called The Flame.

And we just premiered this song a few weeks ago on Maxing Radio. Tell us about this song before

you play it. So it's the song that sparked the, um, the inspiration for this album without me

even realizing it. So I went into the studio actually and recorded this song in summer of 2024.

And I just kind of recorded it as a one-off single. And um, little did I know that this was going to be

the beginning of a bigger part of a story I have in my head. And not only is this an album coming out

that has a whole story and a concept behind it, but it's part one of a trilogy. Oh boy. So

that's all I'm going to say about that so far. But this song was the spark that started it all.

And then like I said, you know, seeing sleep token inspired me to start writing again and

certain other things in life as well. So all right, let's hear it. This is the flame you're

Maxing Radio and your tire flies off your axle and the wheel as well.

Doing 70 miles an hour? Yeah, what did you do next?

So first of all, I'm glad that I'm still alive to tell the story.

Oh, no, I'm glad that I get the opportunity to be on here again. So thank you for having me.

So like you hear stories about people when like they just talk about how everything is in slow motion.

That was definitely one of those moments where like it didn't even feel like slow motion.

It felt like a frame, honestly. Like I was in a still frame. Like I saw the wheel fly off the axle

and then next thing you know, I'm just in a new frame and all that's on my mind is get off the road

and get pulled over safely. So that's all that was on my mind and like

and this was on 18151 as well and they were doing a bunch of construction and if we would have

been like even just three miles down the road, you know, it was a one or sorry a two lane,

you know, one lane going in our direction. And I mean, if we wouldn't have been able to pull off

at the shoulder, then we would have just been stuck in traffic and oh my god, what a nightmare

that would have been. It has to be surreal to kind of like be driving and watching your tire

like roll off. Yeah. So it was one of those moments where like I was in so much shock that like

I didn't even really process what had happened. And then eventually like we were calling

because my mom was with me because she was on the show. So we could do music as family.

So we had to call Uncle Vaughan to come to the rescue. So thank goodness for Uncle Vaughan.

But yeah, it was it was a crazy experience. I'm you know, like I said, I'm really glad to

be here still. Oh, what I was going to say is that like it first, it was everything was in

shock. And then after we called like, I think the fourth tow truck company and they were like,

yeah, we can't get there. Then that's when profanity started coming out of my mouth.

So we'll just leave it at that. The Fufu dolls are performing with power takeoff and the hounds

at the mama cares. 11th anniversary bought the high news moon on March 29th. Talk about donating

your band's time for such an important cause. They help musicians in their time of crisis.

Well, I mean, I love my I love music. You know, I the reason why I do this for a living is because

and I'm very grateful that I get to say that. But the reason why I do this for a living is because

I see what music does to people. I see that it lifts their spirits up. It gives them a place to

be seen when they and heard when they don't feel like they have a place that they're seen and heard.

And also like, I just love that music is one of the few things that brings people together.

So I'm very happy that we get to be involved for this. And I'm also very grateful at Fufu dolls.

One, what was their category best cover best tribute band? I think. Yeah, that's the first time

that I've ever won any sort of award or anything like that. So I'm super grateful that we get

to play this event. And it's my third time playing at high noon as well. Oh, that's,

that's going to be a good show. April 17th, Fufu dolls is at the Roxy on State Street,

just on the street from our studio. And then May 24th, broadcasts. Yes, sir.

So, uh, not Left On The Color Red. Left On Red, as in you sent a message to someone,

they've read the message and they have not responded. That's what it means. Yeah. Wow. Yeah,

we're old rocker. You should know. You do that to me sometimes, man. Well, maybe this song is

going to be the hit single for all the youngsters out there then because what inspired this song

is I, and I've had past history of like, you know, I'll get a girl's number, reach out to her,

ask her out on a date. And then all of a sudden, like she just doesn't exist anymore for some reason.

There was one week where I'm not kidding. It happened to me four times in one week.

So I decided, you know what? I'm going to write a song about this. So, and my album, I, um,

I like to say it's unapologetically myself. And I also like to say that there's different

moods in the album. So the flame is like one of more the upbeat songs that's going to be on the record.

There's some happy love songs on this album because it's about the cycle of the heart. And then

this is kind of the turning point in the album when things start getting a little more dark.

because it's from the Shrek movie soundtrack. And literally, I was called Shrek

so many times by a brand new teacher. It was ridiculous. Well, Cherrik in German,

Well, I got a couple of questions for you as well. Just the first time interviewing tonight.

So what comes first, lyrics, riffs, or concepts of your songs? How do you get to where you want to be?

Usually it's music first. I mean, so when I started writing this album,

it started with like a couple songs here and there. And then I was like, I should write an

album about the cycle of the hearts and, you know, kind of the emotions our hearts go through

when it comes to relationships with ourselves and others. I feel like we're either on our own

healing or becoming a better version of ourselves. I feel like, you know, chapter two is kind of when

you're in the relationship. And then chapter three is, you know, and some people figured out

right away the first time I am not one of those guys. And then you go through the heart break

and you get rid of all the negativity and then you start the cycle over again. But

so for me, it's always usually music first and then lyrics and melody. But it's kind of interesting.

Now that I have this trilogy in my head, like I do, I do have like song ideas of like topics I want

to talk about. And then sometimes music just flows out of me. That's, you know, that's the honest

that got truth. Like, you know, I feel like when I actually sit down and try and think about

something, then it doesn't come out as naturally. But then like, if I just kind of let things flow

out of me, sometimes the music just speaks to me and is like, okay, that's what I want to talk about.

So who's your inspiration that's getting you to do this? What's guiding you to it?

My family for sure. My musical family for sure. I always got to name them first. But

I'm going to bring them up again, sleep token. Yeah. I hear the vulnerability and vessels voice

and it inspires me as an artist. And also, but before Vessel and aside from my family,

when I saw Cory Taylor in both slipknot and Stone Sour. So I always knew I wanted to be a guitar

player and Angus Young and Slash inspired me to be a guitar player. Then I saw Cory Taylor and I was

like, nah, I want to be a frontman. That's what I want to do. You want the line, right? I mean,

who doesn't? I mean, that's just, I mean, that's everyone knows the leasing. I just feel more

free when I'm fronting, honestly, like it almost, you know, I love playing guitar and singing,

but sometimes I feel like I'm, you control the pace, you control everything that's going on out

there. It's you. You're personally invested. So that's awesome. Well, let's get back to live music

Well Vaughn is the drummer, yeah. So tell us a little bit about the album where we can find it.

All right. So I'm going to release five singles because like I said, there's earlier,

there's multiple different moods in this album. So I released the flame last year or sorry,

last month. I'm going to release left on red. The song you just heard me play not too long ago.

That's going to be April 3rd. Then I got another happy love song coming out middle of May.

Then the song you're about to hear me play is the song I'm going to release in July.

And then I haven't fully decided what the fifth single is going to be. But it's definitely going

to be one of more of the hard rock heavy songs. Yeah. On the album. So you really have a schedule

going on this year. I do. Yes. And you're playing around the area. And next Saturday, your duo is at

the whiskey roast saloon. That's just past spring green in a vocal Wisconsin. Yes. Looks like a

fun place to play. They have cheese curds and tater tots. Oh, let me tell you they take the same

Patrick's day. So seriously. Really over there. Yeah. They shut down like the entire main roads

and they have a whole parade. And pretty much the whole entire town of Avocca is there watching

us. We've gotten to do it the last. Oh, my God. How many years has it been now? It's been at least

like three, I think. It might even be four, honestly. Wow. That's one of my favorite duo shows.

like whatever the case may be past traumas or you know, an avoidant attachment style, whatever

the case may be. And this is kind of me singing from the perspective of making the point of like

on B. Just trust the process. I know. I know. Taylor, your summer is going to be crazy playing

music. But even your march is pretty packed up, uh, Kernicke's in Pine Bluff. It's another fun

place. It sounds like I'm going through all the places that you're playing. I'm looking at

their food menus, right? Friday, fish fry with fresh cut fries and marbled rye.

So I'm going to tell you something else about Kernicke's. I'm having my album release party there.

Really? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I love Kert and Nikki. They're incredible people.

And you know, like there's so many great venues that I'm grateful that I've been able to say

that I get to play at. But I mean, and also Kert Nikki's is like seven minutes away from where I live.

So I find myself going there a lot. It's not bad at all. Did you're playing solo in Windsor in March

20th? Yes. And I've just recently started playing at that place. What has it been like four or

five months ago or something when I first played there? Right. I love that place. I really can't

wait to see what happens. And I'd really want to see that place like start to explode and expand.

And I, you know, I think give it time. I think that that'll be a cool location for sure. So back

in the food play here. That's what we're really, you know, keying in tonight is the white

you sliders there. I'm all over. There's no back cheese curds. I haven't tried either one of those

things yet. The last thing I tried. I think it was something along the lines of a rib eye steak.

And I mean, that's, you know, that's always a go-to for me. So I mean, you got to play

at a good place to have good food. Right. Especially when they offer it for free. Every time I play

the comeback in, it's always like, yeah, I'll take the rib, the pound of rib eye steak. And I feel

like I'm going to pass out before I play my first note. The benefits of being a musician.

reasons because a, it's one of my favorites to play at my solo shows. And ironically enough,

I didn't even know this song existed until about a year ago. What? Wow. Yeah. I know lots of

Led Zeppelin songs, but I had never heard this one. And I just immediately connected with it.

And as an added bonus, there's going to be four bonus tracks on my physical copies of the album.

It's going to be two alternate versions of two of the songs on there and then two cover songs.

And I wanted one of the cover songs to be going to California, not just because it's one of my

He's played, he's played in Chewy with Vaughan back in the day. And he knows how to play Mandolin.

And I noticed now and Bailey's here's the food to get right. German Bavarian pretzels.

And they have a neopolitan brick pizza oven and they use San Marzano tomato sauce on their pizzas.

That sounds incredible. And of course, turtle cheesecake. I mean, how can you miss? This is going to be a great show.

Well, coming from a total pizza holic and my entire mom's side of the family is pizza holics. There's so many stories.

I approve. I love a wood fire pizza. It's something different. I haven't tried all of the other stuff. And also I see a lot of people who will get like

what's the word for it? It's like the thing that has like cheese and crackers.

I haven't decided if it's going to be fully acoustic or only piano or what the deal is.

But it's the finale on the album. There's piano in it. There's heavy guitars.

My dad has an eight string guitar. So I used eight string on this song.

I picked it up for the first time and I'm like, what am I supposed to do with this?

But I was able to freaking me out. I'm a drummer.

I was able to find a way to make it work.

And of course there's the big drums from Vaughn, the big bass from Denny.

And a lot of people who have heard the sneak preview of this song have told me that this one

reminds them of like an Ozzy Osborne vibe.
