And of course, he's a legend in this town, Madison.
He was supposed to be in here tonight, but he got booked on a show.
Of course, he's a full-time musician, so he took it.
And so Terry Barr spoke with Robert J. earlier this week on subjects of his upcoming lifetime achievement award and the 10-year anniversary of Mama Cares.

11 albums plus a couple of bands, including those we know as the Moon Gypsies and the Rowdy Prairie Dogs.
I've always loved that name.
And so many awards.
I could not even count them on two hands.
I needed more hands than that.
I am talking about Madison based musician Robert J. Conaway.
Of course, we all know him as the great Robert J.
He is about to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Madison Area Music Association.
And it's really not just about the music.
It's because he has also taken time to care about others and give back to the community.
Robert J, thank you for joining me.
Well, thank you, Terry.
Nice to be here with you today.
a lifetime achievement from the organization that tries to do so much good in our community, the Madison Area Music Association.
What does an award like this one mean to you?
I'm
honored to be thought of for this award.
I mean, you know, it's a lot of great people in the Madison community.
Music community have won it in the past.
I guess I'm thankful that they're putting me in that same bag as the rest of the people.
Michael Krohn, but it's Vig, Ben Sidrin, all these great people, Jonathan Little, the Lips, they've all won that award.
And so now I guess they're running out of people.
You know, it is interesting.
There have only been 20 lifetime achievement awards given prior to you accepting yours on Sunday.
That says a lot about you.
What do you think about when you think about your music career and the things you've given to the Madison area?
I love Madison.
I think Madison is a great town.
It's been my home for over 40 years, and it's allowed me to do what I love to do, which is play music and make sort of a living doing it, you know.
We always look for recognition or connections, you know, through our music.
This kind of makes me feel connected.
You know, we're going to learn a lot more about you at this celebration because there will be a video that plays.
When people watch this, what do you hope they walk away remembering about you?
Well, that it was meant to be.
From the earliest days of my existence, I've had a guitar.
I make a mouse crank guitar when I was little and work my way up from there.
a survivor.
I'm stubborn enough to have stuck with it the whole time.
Maybe they'll learn that, you know, songwriting has been my favorite and most important thing.
You know, if you want a great guitar player, there's a million out there in this town alone.
You want a great singer, you can go there too.
But when I pride myself on it, you want a song?
Well, hey, I'll get you one.
And you have won awards for your songwriting.
and knowing that that is the part that you really, really love, that has to feel good to be recognized for songwriting.
I
definitely feel good about it, you know.
I feel good for some reason, somewhat embarrassed.
There's so many qualified people in this town, you know.
I have a humble attitude towards it all, but I am honored that somebody's taken notice, you know.
Well, I've seen you play many, many times.
And when you get on that stage, you just come to life.
There is something about Robert J on stage.
I don't care
if you're
solo or with a band.
You just come to life.
It's nervous energy.
OK, so one of the reasons aside of that you've supported the community, you've supported other artists, your songs are incredible.
But another reason behind this Lifetime Achievement Award is the Mama Cares program.
And you were the driving force behind that.
Why was this so important for you to begin?
It
all started because of a benefit that was thrown for my family when my son had emergency brain surgery.
We had a super outing at the high noon saloon.
350 people came.
We just felt we had to pay it forward in some way.
My wife Jill and I decided at the time that we should do something to help others.
So we came up with Mama Care as I proposed it to powers that be at the mamas and we've been doing it ever since and I'm happy to say we've given out over $110,000 raised and given out over $110,000.
All the money we raised goes towards helping our fellow musicians in need.
And this can be something, you know, keeping the lights on at their home or medical care, whatever it may be.
And it's really important, isn't it?
Well, totally.
You know, we'd love to give more than we can, you know, than we do.
Just to let them know that they're not alone.
We're here to help them.
It's a good feeling.
It was a good feeling for our family when we were helped.
So we want to pass it forward.
Wonderful.

What can you tell us about this year's mama cares?
Well this this year's mama cares is going to be again at the high noon saloon on Sunday March 29th.
This year the theme is we've got you covered.
We're featuring three cover bands from the Madison area.
The Hounds, Power Takeoff, and the Fufu Dolls.
So it'll be a fun day.
And we do it a little differently every year.
That's just seemed to be a good theme for this year.
We got you covered.
I love it.
Oh, this is something to look forward to.
And it's pretty much an afternoon party, isn't it?
It goes from three till eight o'clock.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's going to be raffles.
auction, silent and live auctions.
Our good friend Mr. Butch Vig has already pledged to give us some good stuff swag from Garbage and his career.
And we're just starting to get together all the auction items, you know, so if anybody has any interest in either sponsoring an auction item or donating an auction item or being a sponsor for the show, please get a hold of us.
And I was there.
I've been there a couple of times in the past and it is fine.
You know, Madison is not a huge cover band city.
So this is going to get a little rowdy, I think, for a Sunday fun day.
Looking forward to it.
Musicians are often really the first to step up.
And I think we're seeing this even in current times in Minneapolis.
Bands have been playing benefits.
Why is it?
What is it about?
musicians and your hearts that you always want to do things for others.
We're kind of the life of the party.
You know, you go out to a bar to usually to see music or not always, you know, and we've just been there.
And when people need us, they ask us and we've gotten a lot from the community and our frequent fliers and repeat offenders who come out to see us play.
You know, when the cause comes up, they ask us musicians and
Quite often we say, yeah, let's do it.
You know how to bring the people together.
That is true.
Before I let you go, is there anything you want to add that I didn't ask you?
Well, as far as the legacy show this coming Sunday, I'm thrilled that my good buddy, Mr. Mike Massey, is also getting the Legacy Award too.
We used to be in a band that we would go up and play in Northern Minnesota at the Lake of the Woods.
And we called ourselves Bobber and Pike, the fishing musicians.
I was Bobber, of course, and he was Pike.
Oh, I don't
think
I ever knew that.
Yeah, yeah, sorry.
It's not a very well-known thing.
But yeah, we used to go up there and we'd fish every day and play music every night.
And it was a pretty nice couple of weeks to get away.
And so I'm thankful that Mike is getting the award.
He well deserved.
They are nice to him.
be able to get it right alongside him.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah.
And again, that's happening this Sunday, February 15th.
It is at the Eastside Club in Madison, just for good cause to come on out.
I think it is a goodwill offering.
And there's going to be some free beer, free pizza and even cake.
How about that?
I know.
We are asking for a donation, I guess.
They're asking just to help.
to fray costs and things.
It's not mandatory, but of course, if you can pitch in to help the mama program, that's a good thing.
And we always love to say, if you're coming, bring a friend and have that friend bring a friend.
It's it's going to be a joyous afternoon.
And I think we could all use some joy and good music right now.
The last the last hour of it after the awards are given out, Shawn Michael Dargan's Beatle Band is going to be playing.
for an hour, so it'll get a little festive at that
point.

This is one of my absolute favorite songs of yours, but for those who maybe haven't heard it, what can you tell us about it?
I
kind of wrote it because for me and all my friends, you know, a lot of us had kids and everything.
life is a beautiful blur you know I mean there's ups and downs and everything but it's definitely a blur so that's how I came into writing that song you know as a blue collar musician that I am you know we have our doubts about the course we take in life sometimes uh so that kind of came out a little bit in the song fun little fact the video that is going to be shown at the uh legacy award of
my life and my career is the backdrop music
to it is this song.
So now people have a little peek into what's going to happen.
Now they really do need to show up on Sunday
to help
us
all
celebrate.
Oh, it's
going to be wonderful.

So, you know, I started clicking on songs and I played that one.
I was like, wow, this is like really good.
And she's just an amazing artist.
And she's like a teacher and like, like a, she runs a lot of things.
She's really pretty big down there.
Diana Lawrence, a singer, songwriter, pianist, um, and that band formed in like 2008.
So that's pretty cool.
I had never heard them before today.

And I I've loved the first rule.

They're from Kenosha, I believe they'll be traveling to Madison for that show.
And speaking of that show,
Soundcheck Entertainment and the Wisconsin area music industry have partnered to grow their annual Battle of the Bands to include Madison in 2026 and Madison's Battle of the Bands showcase will take place Saturday, February 21st at the Burrocon Winnebago Street here in Madison.
On the phone with us from West Dallas, Wisconsin is Soundcheck Entertainment's Michael Grasman.

How you been doing?
I mean, I think we last talked when you were having the battle of the bands last year.
We were doing, it might have been that one a year ago.
So we were doing the first one and we had bands coming in from all over the state, which is kind of what fueled it to become instead of battle of the bands, Milwaukee, it is now a battle of the bands, Wisconsin.
And we've got bands coming from all over the state.
Like you said, you get the first rule coming up from Kenosha.
Oh yeah.
We got bands.
All over the area and they did it last year.
They participated last year and they drove up and played in, uh, I want to feel cotton walk is where we had them.
Oh, that's killer.
Yeah.
This is their bands are from all over the state.
Michael, uh, sound check entertainment does a lot more in Milwaukee's music scene, uh, than put on a battle of the bands events.
Uh, tell us about what you do at sound check entertainment and what you guys do in the, in the Madison, in the Milwaukee music scene out there.
So.
me as a working musician and a production guy you know that's kind of how this whole thing got started and then that part laid into working with music venues and booking their bands and all that stuff and then getting really invested into that and creating events and creating ideas and creating things that draw people out that's kind of where this company has gone in the last couple years that's what the Battle of the Bands is now that's we've got a
Uh, uh, from the battle of the bands, we've got another festival that kicked off, uh, this year called guitar town festival in Waukesha.
Oh wow.
Um,
yeah.

Yeah.
With Gibson guitars, let's Paul, the Chad, the Chad Smith foundation from red hot chili pepper.

Um, these, this all came out of the first battle of the bands, two guys, one judge and one performer.
And they approached me about this idea and we were like this is what we're doing Wow taken we're taking whatever this event can give us and make it the next thing
that's really exciting now soundcheck entertainment deal you guys do Lessons PAs and you also book a couple of Milwaukee club Milwaukee clubs.
I do I do book music for a Polly's public eatery, which is one the music industry venue of the year three years in a row.
That's that's my
That's our little flagship idea of a venue.
How we do it, we kind of take that model and we took it to three other venues and that's really proven to have some sustainable live music.
And obviously the goal from Book and Music at Venues is how do we make it incorporate original music as well.
And I love Polly's club because one of the, one of the ways that you guys do things is you book bands at the bar, but then there's shuttle buses that take people to concerts or summer fast or, you know, all these different events around Milwaukee, but then you end up back at the bar where this band is playing, right?
Yeah, we call it a Polly's Mass Transit System.
He's got four school buses, seven, 15 passenger vans now.
Anything that there's an event going on around town, even going to other big live music shows at other bars and clubs, we're not afraid.
We're not afraid to say we'll take you there and we'll bring you right back to where we are because you're going to go spend money there, you're going to spend money here, and we're going to get you there safe and reliable.
What a concept.
uh soundcheck entertainment and the wisconsin music industry are partners in the battle of the bands in the first round was held at oak brewing in west alice tell us about the first round and who won to move on uh to the finals that are going to be a rally point station in a conwalk in march
yeah so the first one was at oak brewery which is a music venue that does book original music so they have in-house production
a great sound guy that night, Nathan.
And then from Canever, Caneverland Productions, he was our sound guy for there.
But we had six bands perform the band that won that round with the highest score that's moving on to the finale was called Whiskey and the Devil.
And they were signed up to do last year and they had a conflict that couldn't do it.
And I was really excited that they came back and they sailed right through their super talented trio.
And the other band that moved on is called Benjamin Trick, who is a local five piece just rock and roll, a little pop punk kind of band.
Yeah.
So, you know, they're both totally different bands.
I think the cool thing about the battle of the bands is that every band that participates is stage ready.
These are these aren't bands.
They're just hammering around in their in their basements.
This is going to be a show.
This is going to be nine.
The borough will have nine bands.
We did have one drop out from a concert or an illness.
Um, but we will have nine phenomenally great Wisconsin original bands.
Now what inspired soundcheck in whammy to bring around to Madison?
Well, the, uh, well, last year when we did this, we had all these bands coming from all over the state, all the way from, uh, Eau Claire, uh, and Green Bay in Kenosha.
So we, we saw it on, it was the writing was on the wall.
Like we got to bring this to more cities.
Um,
And obviously if we do it in the same city every year, it's going to eventually, you know, you're not going to, you're going to run out of bands.
So the idea was to keep growing, keep expanding.
So even by the time we did the finale last year, uh, we knew we were going to go bigger.
And obviously you got the Wisconsin area music industry.
It's Wisconsin.
It's not Milwaukee.
And I think that this, this can go with their partnership.
They endorse our, our events.
They are partnering with us in the way that they are just endorsing it by.
helping us reach more bands.
The whole goal of this whole thing is not just a competition.
This is a vehicle towards collaborating, networking.
We've got professional videographers there taking video creating content for these bands so that they do have something in their hands just by participating.
And then we've got judges coming in like you guys to give us the best
feedback that they can take to go on to the next level.
That is awesome.
Saturday, February 21st at the Baroque is the Madison round of the Battle of the Bands.
Tell us about this next round.
What can we expect at this show?
And like you said, myself and Sean Michael Dargan are judges.
Yeah.
Well, we're good.
It's going to be fast paced.
It's going to be a long show because we've got nine bands.
We were quite honestly blown away by the reaction we had from Madison.
So it's going to be a packed night.
We'll start at 7.30.
So doors will probably open at 6.30, I believe.
There's a $5 cover.
It kind of helps put on the whole show.
But then every band is going to have a little presentation behind them so that we can all find their followings.
We'll have TVs up with QR codes to every band.
So I hope people are ready to scan QR codes because that's my goal is to
make sure that everybody is finding these bands to follow them, find their music at Spotify, find them on social media, and then come out and see them again when they have their actual shows.
And now two bands will advance from Madison, and then the finale is, that's out at Rally Point Station in Econawa, coming up in March.
Tell us about that.
Yeah, we did our finale there last year.
We're good friends with the production team at Rally Point, and
In my opinion, they're one of the best in the state.
I mean the rally point was owned and operated by a well-known musician from the band Disturbed and he's and Mike Wangren the drummer of Disturbed was going to be a judge at the finale Oh, wow, we're gonna get we're gonna get some heavy hitter some rock stars in there as a judge But they designed a room that was catered to the best sound quality you can can can have and the walls have been sprayed and
It's with, you know, sound absorption material and the PA there and the sound guys are just my good friends of mine with Dan Henze and Michael Hart are just amazing sound techs.
So it's going to be a phenomenal big show.
It sounds like a lot of fun.
March 27th at the rally point station in a conwalk is the finals.
And of course next week, the final finale.
and Saturday, February 21st is the Madison edition of the Battle of the Bands.
How do we keep up with the bands online and how do we find out more about the band of the bands?
Yep.
So the Soundcheck Entertainment, our social media, Facebook, and Instagram is continuously promoting over the next nine days who the bands are, where you can find them, we'll be tagging them.
So you can find them, you can look at them.
We're going to try to share more content by those bands.
But yeah, social media is where we're at right now.
We're kind of allowing ourselves into the animal of trying to push everything out there as much as we can for people to find.
Well, let's see who's fighting for this crown here in Madison.
I see Dolt is playing Valley Kill, The Great Asian, Venus Drug, Rose from the Dead, Thor Grim, The Psyops, Stray Bales, The First Rule, and Mildew, one of those bands.
Which one canceled?
Um, you know, I don't have my lips in front of me right now.
Okay.
Well, one of
them
canceled.
So yeah, $5, nine bands, stakes are over $5,000 of prizes on the line, including studio time at treehouse studios and a slot at summer fest.
Um, you know,
Michael and the Wisconsin area music industry award show.
We, the winner last year got a spot performing at that award show and they're going to do it again this year.
Oh,
very cool.
The opportunities that have spurred from this thing, it's just too many, too many to even list right now.
And the Whammy Awards ceremony is going to be here in Madison at the Atwood Music Hall coming up in May.
And I'll be there too.

So we were talking, he recorded at Megaton Studios with Paul Schluter.
So we were talking and we were like, oh, we need another song, right?

have a little extra time.
I thought, let's get, bring out a little old classic Last Crack.
That was from 1989, their debut
album
Sinister Funk House, number 17.
And do you know what the Sinister Funk House was?
No, I don't think so.
It was a little practice place.
They rented in like a storage facility out Stoughton Road off the Beltline in Madison.
And when they would practice, all the people would come, all their fans would come and stand outside the door.
You know, it's so small inside, they would stand outside and drink beers.
Wow.
And, you know, and Butto wrote all the lyrics for the whole album all around the inside.
And then they went up to...
Paisley Park to record that song.
Actually, I was recorded in Princess Paisley Park by Randy Green.
And Sarah Boy's Cage, Sarah Bowles, she was kind of funded the band.
She was helping them along.
And when they moved up to Minneapolis, they lived in her apartment.

And not only are people going to the Hall of Fame, but there's some Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Of course, we told you Robert Jay, but Michael Massey, you know, he's been in just a ton of bands, solo artists.
I mean, he was nominated for a Grammy.
He's written a book about his life and he was once signed to actually a band.
on Atlantic Records.
They were called Chaser and they were from the 80s and even in the 90s here and Chaser was his band.
And Michael Massey is going to be given the Lifetime Achievement Award here tomorrow at the Eastside Club.
So I thought we'd bring out a little bit of Chaser and check out this throwback.
