a young singer was breaking into the Madison music scene after winning the emerging artist
series for summer fest with her band rivalry five years later she would win the project m competition
and now a winner of multiple Madison area music association awards caddy scullin is set to
release her newest song antidote along with a video this week tonight caddy scullin is in the studio
along with dame demonia on guitar to perform and chat with us about everything caddy scullin
caddy welcome back to maxing radio thank you thank you so much for having me it's so good to be here
well you know i'm not kidding welcome back because this is i think your fifth live appearance on
maxing radio and you have been at all three of our studios going back to 2019 even when it was called
the devil's layer oh yeah back in the day yeah we've been been here a few times it's super fun
oh well welcome back again caddy you started out in music very young joining rivalry at a young age
talk about how you got started in music and leading into joining your first band
well my brother and i started writing music together back in college i think it was
maybe two thousand six and my dad was like you guys you got to call yourself sibling rivalry because
we were this kind of dynamic duo he was super great at guitar and i was singing and we were collaborating
and uh we ended up forming a band later on after my parents had a uh anniversary party they hired a
band and that band invited us to come out to the barn uh Tim Schmidt and glassy d on bass and we
formed rivalry wow that that's pretty cool formed in a barn i love that how did you start
playing guitar so you started singing first yeah and then picked up guitar later on yeah i've always
been uh involved in music ever since i was a kid my my brother got a guitar i think when he was
11 and just watching him kind of thrive in it was really inspiring to me and so he started
teaching me everything that he knew and yeah the rest is history now what's what's your parents
role what role did they play in your musical upbringing well they bought us a uh haunted piano
haunted piano it was a haunted piano that's what they said and i don't know if that was true or not
or if it was just a way to get us curious about the piano but they they always brought us to like
shows we went and saw Kenny G and um we saw the Phantom of the Opera and different Broadway musicals
so it's always been you know something that we loved as a family and just being musical
oh what's your brother doing these days is he still playing he he's an IT guy he's an IT guy
he's an IT guy yeah he still plays though he uh he's in a band called ultra boy picnic okay they
recover band uh more less than uh the Fort Ackinson area but they're awesome Katie left rivalry
to pursue your music career as an individual artist what challenges did you face striking out on
um i think i just kind of decided that you know i wanted to i wanted to go a different direction
i wanted to write music and um more or less like just expand a bit and so i you know i did rivalry for
a while and my brother and i kind of decided that you know he was getting married and wanted to start
a family and um and i also was having my son Mason and so just decided you know i'm gonna go solo
for now and see what i can do i did starpersons which is like a hip-hop group and i've done you know
various uh projects you know singing backup vocals for different bands and whatnot but you know
being a songwriter has Katie Scullin was kind of just the direction i took and i stuck with it so
well how did you overcome obstacles like booking self-management you know what has been your biggest
success my biggest success oh being a mom i think that's my biggest success um but yeah i mean
it's challenging for sure being an independent artist figuring out you know the music business and
booking and management and self-promotion and all of those things there's a lot a lot that
goes into it you know you gotta figure out the the website and the marketing and and then the song

it's called Whitney and it's from your past catalog tell us about Whitney before you play
so Whitney it was a song that i wrote when i decided i was gonna pursue music more seriously um
i was playing piano in my living room and i had this little keyboard that my dad had bought for me
for Christmas and hit the like pre-recorded drum beats that those old you know Yamaha's would have
and it was like it was super cheesy but it like reminded me of a pop song by like Whitney Houston
or something and so um i just decided to call it Whitney and then i never changed the title because
i i thought about how music has helped me in various scenarios through life where i feel like a song
just speaks to my soul and it helps me through you know different difficult situations and so
i wanted to keep the song called Whitney you know maybe there's a Whitney out there who was like oh my
god this is my song um yeah and just a note to Whitney Houston because she's freaking awesome so

oh that's an awesome moment to Whitney thank you i love it uh i have been watching the
Taylor Swift documentary series end of an era and i am impressed by her drive to control
music and art at every level and Katie you've also taken control of your music and art and
become a band leader in your own right talk about that role and the bond that you create with
your band to bring your vision and music to the stage well i appreciate the uh comparison i
you know Taylor Swift is she's phenomenal and like we were talking earlier she really takes care
of her crew and and she's had a tough journey herself you know trying to take back control and
and i think i struggled with that myself just kind of knowing you know the industry and how things
have played out in the past for other artists who maybe weren't as fortunate um
being able to get back their catalog of music and and things that they worked so hard for and
that really are a piece of their heart and their soul um so you know that's definitely been a part
of my journey as well and i i love what i do and i'm by no means at a Taylor Swift level i look
up to you know the things that she's done it's it's phenomenal and i think it's just great to
you know hear the stories about she takes care of her crew and and all of that and i you know i
try my best it's uh you know we're in a small community here in Madison but there's a lot of
opportunity at the same time and yeah well you've you've got a great band tell us about the people
in your band i do have a phenomenal band well first we've got Dane over here well we'll be talking
in a in a moment but uh tell me about your the live band that you play with right now
yeah so while it's been my brother primarily for the longest time and he plays with me from time
to time as you know as his schedule allows uh Jacob bears been my base player for many many years
Scott chase on um and i've also on drums on drums yep yep he's he's a phenomenal drummer yes um
and i've just recently started playing with ivy McLaughlin on keys and uh mic sissario has been
playing percussion so yeah i have a i'm lucky i really am i'm blessed with great artists how do
you balance your music career in being a mom you know i i have no idea i don't really sleep um
no and i have a full-time job too i work in media as well on doing a video production but
i over the last i don't know five years or so i've i've decided to dedicate one night a week
to music to continue my craft i'm you know first and foremost i'm a mom and then i've got my job where
i'm you know doing video production and whatnot but i have had to you know carve out time to
continue to do music and perform as often as possible and try to play out as much as i can too so
yeah it's a balance it's a balancing act well tell us about your son i mean is he interested in
music because you know the first time we met him right was right here on the radio yeah yeah he
he's so sweet he's uh he plays saxophone right now he's playing saxophone in the
okay in the band yeah i was a sax player too you all that's off seven years i love it and i
i see secretly hope that he you know steps up on stage and plays careless whisper with us
that's on point um yeah no he's great he and he just picked up the guitar i you know he took
drum lessons and he's taking guitar lessons a little bit and those kind of went away but he just
recently picked up the guitar um which made me super happy so but i think saxophone he's he's
pretty good at it so wow and how did he get into saxophone was that something there's a school
yeah or did he just kind of pick that up yeah that was his choice in band he wanted to try saxophone
so yeah it is a kind of an easy instrument to pick up in place is it i understand yeah i do yeah oh boy
that what that one seemed really hard to me yeah i would pick something easier like drums right
there you go i did trumpet you only have three buttons on the trumpet so how hard can that be only
three exactly but you have five fingers it just doesn't make sense uh well let's get back to

that you have for us tonight it's called endless summer and the older you get the shorter the summer
is tell us about endless summer um well this is a great tie-in to my son so we took a vacation
i don't know maybe three summers ago um in the north woods of Wisconsin and um it was just pretty
it was pretty magical seeing all of my nieces and nephews playing in the water and having so
much fun and it just kind of brought me back to my childhood of being on vacation and just sort of
that that freedom um so we ended up putting together this treasure hunt for the kids um and they
ended up finding this map in the mailbox and you know there was a missing piece on the map and they
had to go through all these different obstacles to to find the the pieces to you know find the buried
treasure and they ended up having to like uh cross the water to an island um cross the lake to an
island my dad my dad dreamed this whole thing up but it was and it's all videotaped i have a
documentary but it was like pure chaos in the in the moment right because they were all super excited
they had no idea what was going on um they ended up having like slay a dragon and then they ended
up getting the treasure and you know like they're they're all excited to get like these you know
this jewelry and whatnot that was in the buried treasure and for me the like the true treasure of
it was just seen the excitement and the smile on their faces and so I I really wanted to capture

the guitar is some tell us about dane dane is awesome he's waiting for you have been a rock in my
life now dane is so wonderful i would say i think you are one of the best guitar players in
Madison and just love love having you here you've added so much to my songwriting and performance
it's we we have a lot of fun together so all dane you are a veteran of the Madison music scene here
tell us about your backstory mean how did you get started playing music oh man um so since i was a
kid i remember there's probably pictures of me when i was like four years old holding a guitar that
was bigger than me you could see like my head and my feet coming out of the side of it uh my dad
was a musician so we would have band practices at our house or i would go with them to the drummer's
house or whatever and i was at every gig every show every practice and i loved it i just wanted to
be in the middle of it um and so he had been through in different bands and i was 14 years old and
he came home one day he's just like hey you want to be our lead guitar player and i said i have it
like i said before i thought he was kidding and uh he wasn't so wow yeah so i started playing
the clubs at 14 with my dad all the all members of his band and it just sort of
when i'm from there i moved to Madison in 99 uh i started my first band here as a rock band
back in the day and played with many musicians what band was that uh it's called 20 well actually the
first band i started was called luster luster yeah and then it went uh 20 reasons taken we were
rock band oh sure yeah and then uh just a bunch of other bands i went through and then
um a few years back i went on tour uh with a guy named Derek Jones we threw the United States
played all it everywhere um but i also have two kids and it was getting kind of hard they were coming
up with me and uh logistically was rock every and well they were and they loved it they loved it
but like at the same time uh the the whole band was from um southern indiana so for me to get down
there oh boy yeah i had to get there anywhere south i had to get down there and then anywhere north
they would come up here and get me and hit the road um so we got to do a lot of cool stuff it was
it was a blast um but it got to be a lot so how'd you run into Katie oh man uh well we we go
way back uh family friends uh we've known each other for a long time uh we've been playing together
for what nine nine years something like that uh like 2016 or 2017 uh she needed a guitar player for
brought fast and gave me what a month oh my god but i was so impressed like he he took my entire
catalog and you learned it note for note within a month yeah yeah which you probably didn't even spend
you know he's just that good did you have perfect pitch or something i don't know but i just
that good now i just grew up that's how i learned music i remember my dad shot me in a room one day
he's like here it was Georgia satellites um keep your hands yourself yeah he was learning this song
he came back in 15 minutes and he goes how you're doing i had the whole song down and i just learned
by ear from then on i tried to read music and i just yeah for me and so yeah i just yeah i just
listened to it and try to learn it very cool well let's get back to live music from the mad city with

called enough and uh it has not been released tell us about your new song oh what do i say about
this one oh you can't say enough oh man you know this is uh kind of this this song happened i think
it was tail end of covid maybe it was during covid and i was pretty uh i don't know sad about
seeing like the the true condition of the human heart through social media and just the fighting
and and whatnot and i was going through some things in my own world in my own life and i felt like
i was i was frustrated that like doing the right thing didn't seem to be enough and um i was
struggling with that because we're taught to you know lead by example and you know pray for your
enemies and and pray for the people that persecute you and and all of that and so this was kind of
kind of a prayer in itself um just wondering where god was and then also being like well you know
i guess i don't blame him if he left because we're all being really crappy to each other at the same time
so this is just kind of a prayer like hey you know i'm here i'm trying you know come back help me i

us of your life outside of being a mom and music well uh yes i do a lot in the video production world
now which has been super fun um producing and working on a lot of different 30 second commercial
15 second commercials uh working in tourism with discover Wisconsin uh visit lake janeva a lot of
different things so that's been super fun just kind of like you know get into that side of
of production as well as um producing music as well and yet i teach one night a week i teach uh
guitar songwriting and i've been doing a little bit of artist development with some of my students
which is super rewarding to like help them you know like people helped me when i was just getting
started in music so yeah so that's great you're a mentor to a few younger musicians then
yeah yeah i'm trying yeah your eggs are in all the baskets great job thank you
katie you have new songs and videos coming out tell us about recording and producing
for your own album yeah so um this next project that i've been working on i've been recording in
my hometown at lunar lava audio which has been really really fun it's um you know being being
home and close to mom and dad i i over the summer was going there i'm Tuesday nights like we had talked
about earlier um i one night a week and um it's it's been fun i go to the studio i record and then
i go see mom and dad and have dinner and head on home so and i am uh i'm putting a music video out
as well too so i've got a new song coming out um we're doing a premiere party on january
talking about that in just a minute yeah so tell us about the new album that you're producing
it itself produced you said yes lunar lava yep is it going to be coming on on vinyl oh i wish i don't
know yet so i've been you know as an independent artist um putting songs out as often as i possibly
can yeah um so it's been more single song releases and i hope you know as as the songs come out
then once i have my catalog i can put out a full-length album with all of those single songs
and if i can do vinyl i absolutely want to do vinyl i want to go back old school you know i love
that you we can stream music all over the world but there's also some downfalls to streaming and
there's yeah which we're all figuring out the hard way um yeah vinyl is in again that i'm uh
surprised that's what i've heard i need to get myself a record player oh yes and you need to get
some vinyl because uh i want to play it on vinyl right yeah uh is this a new album is is self-produced
are you are you working with a producer yep um so i'm producing it and working with uh

that was really good I like this stuff uh you know let's talk about Copa uh it stands for
community organizers promoting the arts and before we talk about your listening party that
you're hosting there what is Copa Copa community organization promoting the arts you know
it is the visionary behind it is Dale sticker he has toured with Elton John for the last I think
32 34 years yes piano man right yes that is as his piano attack um and he he's just been you
know such a blessing in in my life and in so many other people's lives just promoting the
arts and and giving artists a like resource to develop and craft their music and that's what
Copa is all about it is a space for creative people not even just musicians people that are
interested in lighting and uh audio and dance and performance art there's uh there's uh people
that are just you know making making art in all forms uh whether it's painting or clay or or
whatever so it's it's a space and um it's it's wonderful I'm I feel very honored and blessed to
to make music and make art and and be able to utilize that space uh Katie do you know uh Lola
like I'm pretty sure she was a show girl at the Copa Lola yeah I didn't mean her there but yeah
maybe maybe she's there on Wednesday night well now they have uh they have open jams there
yes they do I know they have an open jam there and I know that uh Dale sticker's main mission is to
actually build a campus over there yes now we're talking that's index road which is just south of
the belt line off of fish atry yep yep and he plans to have just a giant facility there for
for everything that you said but brand new he really wants to bring it in there yep and so it's
great you could go out to to your advantage Copa and kind of check it out if you want to get more

listening party um well I think just in getting to know Dale over the years and and seeing his
mission and and how he's been you know just so supportive like I don't know he's been a wonderful

knows that it's there I mean except for the musicians now are like oh there's an industry night
oh there's jazz night oh there's there's a cinema showcase like there's just so many things
that are happening there um and it feels it feels great to just like be able to be in community
with each other because that's really what it takes it's an ecosystem right as an artist we
need producers and we need lighting tax and and videographers and um directors and screenwriters
they need musicians for their films and all of that so creating this ecosystem is just like

Being a musician is full of problems. How do I get to the gig on time? Did I bring the
cartooner getting porn on during a summer show? How do you cope? How do you cope? How do you cope?
You know, you just get through it. There's been a lot of getting this laughing over there.
There's been a lot of gigs where I've like gotten four hours away and been like,
okay, I don't even have a cable or I don't have a microphone or I don't have the main component
to my PA system. Like there's so many things to remember. Or you don't dress correctly, right?
You think that it's going to be warmer and it's freezing cold or vice versa.
I'm still wearing my clogs. Yeah, you're sweating your butt off and all of that. Or you
know, you get rained out. That can be a hard thing, especially as an independent artist.
Yeah, you just, you live and you learn not to put all your eggs in one basket. You get a little
bit more strategic as you go. So remain calm. Yes, remain calm. Well, you know, I saw that first hand
Katie, your band played for us just up the street here on State Street for a make music Madison.
And boy, it rained that day, didn't it? It rained. It rained on part of your set, but I was just
amazed. It didn't faze you at all. And your band just like when just kept on going. We wanted to
play so bad. We covered everything in tarps. And you know, people were having fun though. At least
it was summer and somewhat warm. But yeah, we made it through. Wow. That was, it was a lot of fun.
January 16th, you are hosting your music video premiere party at Copa. And there's a lot going on.
Tell us about the party and the premiere of your new video. Yeah. So I have a new song coming out
called antidote. And I've been working on the song for a long time. I just looked back in my
voice, my nose. And I started writing it in 2021 on my bedroom floor. And it just like,
you're writing the lyrics on the floor. Yeah. I don't know. I was probably crying.
No. And it just kept coming back to me. And I started doing some like pre-production in my
my bedroom studio. And I recorded a version of it up north. That was this sort of like slow,
slow, I don't know, moody version of it. And then I finally decided in the last year, year and
a half that I wanted to produce it with a band. And Dean is on it. And Jeff Peterson,
who's been helping me produce it as well, is playing drums. And we've got Dan Mcdonald on
the bass and who else. I think my brother did some swells on it. So yeah. And then just as the song
was getting finished, I got a message in my DMs from a good friend of mine who's done two music
videos. Bob Tronson, he owns Clouds North films here in Madison. And he's like, hey, you know,
do you have anything ready to go? And I'm like, I just so happened to have gotten the latest mix
on this song. Let's do it. So we filmed a music video in November. And I'm really excited about it.
And I was like, you know what? Like there's so many people involved in bringing a song to life
that I just really want to celebrate all of the people that helped me get there. And so
they're on a party. And we're going to have a premiere. And I even hear you might be able to get
dinner. And there are. Yeah. So we are going to leave it open until Tuesday evening. If you want
a dinner plate option, we are going to cater in forage kitchen and have some other great options as

be asked that question. I think the song is generally about navigating unclear situations in life.
We sometimes get clouded in relationships that we're in and we kind of lose sight of who we are
as individuals and like our sole purpose in life. And so the antidote for me was navigating
that being able to put words to different scenarios and things that I was going through and
being able to sort of take back my sense of self and autonomy, which we all deserve. And so I think
art is the antidote to people's pain. And I think knowledge is also the antidote to people's fear.
But it's definitely up for interpretation. All right. Well, let's check it out. This is antidote
