Madison Uphoff accepts the fate of Four Corners on Max Ink Radio

welcome back to maxing radio i am rocker here with jane and it is time for live from the

mad city presented by the air and webber group marrying wandering melodies and twisted words

madness and up off 21 she is a Wisconsin born folk artist and her debut album holding pattern

was written and recorded in los angeles released in may 2024 and she was interested in exploring

the cultural goings on and her own related misgivings and she set to record a four track cassette

recorded in ep in 2026 and madison welcome to maxing radio let me turn you on

thank you there she is it's been a night of that i'm missing so many buttons tonight yeah you're

the one missing the buttons for you i'm the one missing the buns i'll take the blame on that

madison tell us about yourself i mean what is your backstory how did you get started in music

yeah i i don't know that i have like a joker catalyst origin story but i have always

loved music my family is very musical so i sort of grew up with my dad he's a sound engineer

and my step-parent is a performer and my mom you know did choir and Wisconsin singers when she was

in school and so it's like i think it's very familial i started you know singing as soon as i could

open my mouth and terrorizing my family with it and i got put into piano lessons when i was seven

so that was like the first time that i was answered you didn't want to i don't know that it was

that i didn't want to but i think i think because it was structured and it was discipline

it's a little hard to get a seven-year-old to sit down and really practice her skills and it wasn't

it wasn't you know my piano teacher was wonderful and she stuck with me until i graduated high school

so clearly we had a bond however um yeah i don't know i think learning a skill is hard and i think

i'm a stubborn person well you played piano for a long time then huh yeah what like what would

you say you know you play piano like because there's so many different really styles a piano can

be almost anything what do you like to play a piano i these days you know i kind of just

structures like i mean like jazz or whose piano or are we talking like rock and roll or you know

yeah i mean honestly it's very singer-songwritery right now um and i grew up i learned some

classical pieces and i remember mostly when i was being taught it was like preparing for festivals

and we would have recitals and so there was like a certain list of repertoire that you have to

learn for these festivals um and it wasn't exactly the most inspired thing i've ever done in truth

however um i am also i was a musical theater and still um um student and and so i was

playing a lot of songs like that so i could accompany myself as i sang um which i never had

tremendous ease with but um i think that helped set me up to to teach myself guitar and to

to start accompanying myself um but yeah i so like i played some musical theater styles i played

some like classic like Bach butchered some Bach in my day um yeah it's a little bit of everything

but now since since i've stopped taking lessons and i hope my teacher never finds this but it's

been a little like a little slow it's less seasoned for the piano no we're hope they're we hope

they're not listening right now uh also on your resume um of course guitar which you'll be playing

tonight uh dulcimer cello banjo and bass guitar yes do you do you play any of those uh in any

other groups or bands or i don't nor do i play any of those you know excellently um i i got a

dulcimer um because i love Joni Mitchell and i wanted to play her stuff um and so i had just graduated

high school i was in a music shop in door county i was like this is calling my name so i got myself

a mountain dulcimer so i could play a case of you and um california and you know all the Joni

songs on that instrument uh and then yeah i played i played cello in school so i was living in LA and

got a very cheap cello and it's beautiful it's exactly to my skill level you know is there such a

thing as a cheap cello i didn't well honestly no cheap for a cello maybe it's a better way to say

yeah yeah picked up a cheap stand-up bass right exactly it's like you know for the low price of

through it in the back it's taking home yeah um i think a cheap cello is probably stolen but um this

one was reasonable it was like his name was riza he lived like an hour away i found him on

facebook market place he sold me a cello it hasn't broken or anything so i think so far i'm getting

my money's worth like oh excellent well let's get to a little live music from the man city

tonight it's called four corners and it's from your debut uh EP holding pattern from 2024 is this

song about never leaving home and moving to LA in a way i mean yeah i wrote this i wrote this like

you said in LA um and i when i was young i think i was in high school uh i went and i saw a play

called fun home by Janine Tussori and based off of the the comics by Alison Bechtel and in it the

father character talks about it's just some statistic that he mentions uh about you know dying

in a very small radius to where you were born uh and what percentage of people stay in that circle

their entire lives and live their entire lives and grow their families and you know work and and

die in the same place and that as a young person to me was very i wouldn't say scary

because i had enough autonomy to leave and to go to Los Angeles but it was like it was curious

because now here i am back in my hometown and it's it's a bit of a i didn't know it at that point

right exactly so yeah this is all right well let's check it out this is four corners

tell us about your

theater experiences

oh my gosh

yeah so

that's that's mostly what i do

music is you know the thing that i

love and the thing that i create

all from myself and

so it's for me and completely by me

and so it's kind of sacred

and theater i've been doing

since i was a kid i started in fifth grade

and

now i'm here

i'm uh

yeah it's like it's my own an off job

i feel very lucky to be able to do it

for

for part of my job sometimes and um

did your

do your mom like make some of your costumes

for some of your early plays

oh my gosh no

that would have been so lovely

i yeah i feel very lucky like

um i've just i've been able to do

amazing like you said i did i've done

some stuff here at children's theater

madison here at forward theater i'm

like looking at the building where i

did these things across the street

you're the overture um sure well what did you

learn you know about wendy from the

experience of playing wendy from Peter

Pan

like maybe something that we don't know

i mean we've all seen the the animation

right maybe even one of the movies

but playing the part you must get a

some kind of inside scoop

yeah i'm trying that i i did that

when i was a sophomore in high school

and it was so much fun

we only got one performance because that

was like March 13th 2020

so that was like all really

everyone was you know biting their

fingernails should we even be able to

do this dress rehearsal but everything

was shutting down we were devastated we

were children trying to put on Peter Pan

and so we did one dress rehearsal um trying

to think of like tidbits about that i my

my favorite part of that was the flying

because i got set up in a rig

oh really and everyone got flown in the air

it was amazing yeah i had never i haven't

done that since either so that was like

that was my only time in a how many people

are how many people are flying around on a

stage it was four of us it was me

and then she has two little brothers

right and then it was it was the the actress

who played Peter and so we were just all

up there swinging around it was amazing

it's a nobody strings are getting tangled

i hope thank goodness we had no string

titles although mind you we had one

performance like you never know what

happens um but yeah we we managed to stay

alive for that one so i think that was

that was easily my favorite part and you're

also a dancer training ballet jasmine tap

while you do a lot of stuff you you must

own a lot of dance shoes actually i'm a

horrible dancer i have been trained

they have tried to train me but i'm not a

horrible dancer i just i think i locked

the zeal i don't i don't have the um the

bug and so i've kept my dance shoes

minimal thank goodness for my wallet i'm

spending it on cellos clearly all right

out of music and yeah exactly um but yeah

no i i love to dance i just you know if one

were to put me up against a dancer it would

be a stiff competition

well let's get back to live music from the

have for us today it's called uh never

felt the kick who is lola yes um i'm gonna do

this intro and then i'm gonna down tune so

sorry for everyone involved but um

lola is the subject of this song of course um when i

was living in Los Angeles i first stayed with

family and then i moved into my own

apartment uh and i was 19 so it was the first

apartment that i'd ever had it was a very

expensive studio apartment in Los Angeles that

was not fun before um but uh yeah i was kind of

just like exploring the the new digs and

and seeing what this this new place that was

all my own had in store for me and it's

crawling up on the countertops and like seeing

how much dust and dead bugs there were and

you know just like getting the real lay of

the land um and i it was basically a spotless

apartment it's one of those where everything is

painted over white and so it looks almost

like a present but then you fill it up with all the

love and all the decoration but um lola was

carved into the the top of one of the cabinets

and i found that so interesting because

everything else was completely blank and you

know spotless and and here was this name uh and so

i i kind of wrote a song about what she

might have been like um and maybe it's a bit

of a projection of myself you never know you

know um but i'm gonna down tune into open sea

real quick it could be your cool alter ego

someday it could be my cool alter ego

that's that you aren't already cool that you know

yeah open sea is a um a bit of a stretch on this

guitar but uh someone gave me this guitar

in Los Angeles which um

i was very lucky to receive uh in line with the

fact that i had written this song and played and

i could see all the time which is very nice

and this is this is tuning on uh your iphone i see

yeah you have an amp there's an amp for that

there's an amp for that i i had a snark for a little

while and i used that because opening up your

phone to tune just seems it's like way too

on the nose for you know and i just don't want to

be on my phone if i get avoid it but the

snark was inaccurate all the time and i was like

got to go back to the app

never felt the kick I didn't I didn't feel it oh my goodness that was my favorite song so far that was

really neat it had this almost like a Middle Eastern scaling get played kind of folky like rock

so it was very interesting with a very out of tune lowest string so sorry for everyone

I thought they made it sound cool I couldn't even tell I thought that was a part of it

you know what retrospective it was it was I knew it

Madison you'll be performing a single actor play in Los Angeles and we'll just give you a second

to tune back because actually you got a tune now back to what regularly I play I play a half

step down but yes so it's hard to do yeah exactly drafty she's metal very metal

it's a very metal that's a metal tini

there's like old school right right so sorry everyone

we're back we're back okay Madison you'll be performing a single actor play in Los Angeles

coming up it's a retelling of a classic heroes journey story Homer's Iliad tell us about

taking this on it must be quite a quest it's like you're the only person telling the story

yeah I just came this this afternoon from my first dress rehearsal so I just did the

the whole thing for other people for the first time which I think I'm a little bit of a

masochist because I am exhausted but it's also been like it's 110 minutes of me yelling

the whole megella oh my gosh it's like and it's truly the one of the most rewarding and humbling

experiences but yeah it's a it's kind of it's been an insane learning experience and I'm I'm so

grateful that I get to do this it's the most text I've ever had in my head at one time it's like

you know you play all the parts so it's basically it's a it's a play by do you kind of voice out

each character a little bit yeah it's in the voice and the physicality and I'm having

conversations with myself almost the whole time and so and so it's like yeah you you're talking

to the left and now you're talking to the right and you're a different person and like you got

a switch back and forth and wow it's been yeah it's been super challenging as I'm sure you know

you can imagine but it's also been I'm learning so much about myself and I'm like

some kind of script that's been modified or yeah thank goodness I'm not doing the whole

Iliad I'd be a puddle on the floor this is a this is a retelling of the Iliad based on

Robert Fagels' translation from the 90s and it's a it's a play structured by Dennis O'Hare and

Lisa Peterson who basically have taken this concept of a kind of immortal being named the poet

whose task is to retell the Iliad time and time again throughout the years and it's imagined that

this poet character has been present at every armed conflict since the Trojan War and so witnessing

war and how we get there and what brings us to violence and the consequence and the the cultural

shifts it's a fascinating play and I'm so lucky to be able to do it but yeah it is um how did you

find out about this to audition yeah this was um this is being directed by a lovely friend of mine

named Morgan McKenna's who um we met doing theater things in Milwaukee and she's now working out

there for Sony and so she's in Los Angeles she kind of moved there right as I left um so we were

a little passing ships and we've worked together before and I love love working with her and so

she had this idea and I love her so much she like forgot to ask if I wanted to do it she just

started talking about like when we do it and I had to turn to her and be like I thought you were doing

I see I did like I didn't know but it's been a blessing and you ever performed uh like this

before like a solo no no I've done when I was in high school I did um forward theater does

I'm on a log um festival thing where you do like a 10 minute piece and so for me that felt

Hercules and I was like 10 minutes okay um 100 now I've added a hundred I was like this is not

enough um so no I've never done anything of the scale before and in a way you know obviously it's

an incredible challenge but I do feel kind of unstoppable I was learning this play and I was

learning a two person play at the same time and I did feel like I could wow learn anything do you

think do you think we'll ever be able to see this show in Madison I don't know I I you know I've

been thinking about that because I have a lot of people that I love and would love to come see it um

and so hopefully that does happen I I think that I could probably get that together but

as of right now no details but there's a big question mark in the future well let's get back to

apple next year is this song about flying too close to the sun well yes in a way don't we all um yeah

I I wrote this song I was you know I was living in Los Angeles I was coming to terms with a lot of

things that I think I solidified in my youthful mind as truth and then when you grow up you look around

and you realize no one knows what they're doing and you can't just swallow everything you're told

and it's a it's a bit of a heartbreaking process to learn in all the ways and you know never

learned completely but to see so many of the cracks in the pavement and so I think this is a

reckoning of everything a lot of conceptual stuff um but yeah well let's hear it this is the wax

you know we've been talking about your acting career

and one thing I found that another character that you've played

was a title on Fiddler on the roof

and tell us about playing that character and what you took away from that experience

how long were you and you did that that was just this last summer

so that was yeah that was that was amazing I met so many beautiful people

it was my first time ever doing anything down in the Chicago land area

and so it was sort of like a new a new body of water to explore

I love that show I've done that show three times two of which were

you know youth productions and so it was it's a very different ball game

when you're doing and getting paid and fun things like that

but I love the show I grew up like you know I love to the movie with

topple and I mean the music in that show is just like

yeah right it's like I'm truly truly in love

and so I had I when I was a little kid I played chava

when I was slightly older I played huddle

and then recently I just did so I completed my little triangle

it was just fun you played all the characters

and soon I'll be the mother you know you never know

hopefully I have a second but

what do you what do you take away from that story because you know

it's a very interesting story yeah I mean it's like

it was such a wonderful experience too because I am Jewish

and I come from a you know a not super involved Jewish community

and our Jewish family rather and and very little Jewish community

and so we were just talking about this but like forming my own

relationship with Judaism and it was a cast of mostly Jewish people

it was like the most Jewish people that I have ever been around

and so it was like it was these people telling the story

that some of which have you know super strong connections to

and some of their family comes directly from this part of the world

and so it was just like everyone had their own tie to Fiddler

but I think like I don't know I think Fiddler everyone

regardless of who you are where you come from

that I mean that is that's the family right

and it's the the ideas of tradition and doing you know

everything you can for the people that you love

and it's the story of these three daughters forming their own lives

and making their own decisions for themselves and what they value

and I like that it's a universal story there's a reason why it's you

I think for the character of Cytle which you played last year right

she was betrothed to the butcher right so she was supposed to marry the butcher

and she didn't want to marry the butcher she was in love with the tailor right

and her dad actually recognized that

and kind of changed around what was really kind of you know almost

this like law in deals how did you you know how did that

how did you see that from your perspective as a woman

to see this happen with your character

yeah I mean Cytle is like she's the oldest in her family

and so it's this journey of tepia their father sort of

exactly reckoning having to deal with the fact that these children

that he raised on his own principles might in fact challenge the things

that they all know to be true right

and it's like oh I did this didn't I but I raised them too well

but it's yeah she she gets to confront these very rigid traditions

with simple that's the simple truth right

and sticking to what she believes which is I love this person

and she goes to her father who she you know doesn't necessarily know

she's going to be able to change his mind but she advocates for

oh my gosh I'm actively receiving a call from the person that played model

plays the tailor that's perfect timing

oh my love Nathan

yeah so yeah I mean she makes the first move

and her sisters all have their own individual journeys there

and you know it's slightly different but they're

they're young women taking control of their lives

and so I think it was I don't know I think that's a wonderful story

and you know very empowering and like very cool

well if it ever comes around again I want to come see you in that if you're going to play

I will always be there I guess I got to wait till you're the mother right

three years

you are planning an album in 2026

is you putting this out digitally or final CD tell us about your new album

yeah I haven't I haven't recorded it yet

yeah but I'm planning on doing it's basically like a session's EP

so I'm planning on going somewhere hopefully like upstate Wisconsin

somewhere in the woods sit down with a four track cassette and just record a couple of songs

the one that I just played the wax this one I'm going to play next and a couple more

that I think I'm playing later in the evening and just sit down there

and kind of like a sessions recording just a little messy and a little honest

and and I'll hopefully then you know digitize those cassettes and release it on platforms

that don't require you to come come by a cassette because that might not be the most

approachable for many more but yeah so so hopefully I'll have that out as soon as possible

but I'm also I'm in this place now where I'm like I'm not going to rush anything

I'm trying to sort down a court here I've got a new court where was there was a

quarter inch cable over there that you had before can we plug into that

every now and then you get a bad chord or a bad connection so I guess we'll just

try and fix it here and see what we can do

which is a Monday and January 16th which is a Friday I'll be there and then

hopefully more throughout the season but what's the post like I've never

been to that restaurant inside the par hotel oh my gosh it is like it's the

dreamiest gig ever I just set up in a corner and I play for the dinner crowd

and I've never done a Monday but the Fridays have been very lovely it's like

fancy or bar food or what yeah it's pretty fancy I mean the park is like kind of a

I think it's like a fancy-ish hotel it seems that way when I walked in I got

ballet so it felt very serious very fancy I mean I think it you know I've never

gotten ballet in my personal life and so I felt like a big move wow rock star

yeah I knocked for real yeah so it's been wonderful I just I sit in a corner

and it's it's a pretty small restaurant but you know some of the the hotel

goers and then I think a few people come in the streets and it's it's been

um I've been you know in an artistic ebb and flow with different mediums and

as you know things like theater get a little more popular in my life and

presents and taking my time I haven't been writing as much and so this is the only

song of 2025 to emerge but I'm grateful that one came out and we'll see what

happens in 2026 but this one this one is like I think it's a more up to date

you know it's my first one that I finished back in the Midwest and so it's a

little bit of a it's a pocket of now I guess oh let's check it out this is

sudden the guys like you just begun and I am not known by the bed I can't leave

no room in the dining push the final thoughts to blue the strobe by

detention didn't cry mine from you a break in the breathing reaching back across

the room long fingers enveloped the warmth she withdrew perfumed and annoyed

so I can hold stale but through I've trained and I'm woven pleading of youth

it's a bear little winter it's feeding the proof we wait for the pinch of the

ending

of that name Madison paranormal investigation is not a new thing

in fact your great grandparents are paranormal investigators we just we're almost

at the end but I had to hear about this great grandparents yeah I'm investigating

here in Oregon Wisconsin here in Oregon Wisconsin yeah they have a little they

had a little farm and they would have people come in from all over the country

and they try to basically myth bust and like see if they're the real deal I know

very well they're kind of more skeptical than like you know believers I think they

were yeah I mean they were like they believed but they were also going to

ratchet you out if you were lying but I it's so interesting isn't it like I

don't know many of these stories because they've been kind of swept into the

rug and that honestly brings up even more suspicion for me but I found this I

recently they have a book so who knows it's called great psychic frontiers

interesting I'm going to have to get that and check it out at the library we have
