Max Ink Radio · Sat Oct 4, 2025
Horace Green is an indie rock band hailing from Wisconsin powered by longtime friends Tony and Sam accompanied by a rotating lineup of talented musicians, the band infuses their music with rock and roll spirit, blending sulfur grooves and danceable rhythms with a modern indie edge and high above state street in the W MDX studios, it's time for live from the mad city with horse green Tony Sam Austin Todd, welcome to maxing radio last week we came to see horse green at the
Memorial Union Terrace it got a little chilly but you guys kept it warm on stage did we good I'm glad it was really nice it was a great night it was so warm that you guys were like laying down taking a nap during one song
Oh we were recharging recharging during the song oh that was so fun none of you in the band our named Horace Green tell us about starting this band and naming it Horace Green
well this band started with me and Sam about 10 years ago I think which is kind of scary to say it is crazy Horace Green the name is like you know there's nothing specific with it we wanted an old man we wanted an old man's name we were really into blues music when when we started the band so a lot of blues bands are just like the guy's name yeah so we were thinking well we'll get a band you know you get like a dog
you name the dog you get a you get a band I guess you just name the band we went back and forth for a while we did yeah
Bertis Brown was a contender I liked that one well I didn't like Sam didn't like that yeah that's how Pink Floyd got their name there you know
like they just combined the names of two popular blues singers and got Pink Floyd out of it so oh really yeah you're on your way to becoming legends guys
okay good yeah you know and it's like Jethrel tall too right so we keep referring to Horace Green as him he like right yeah
that happens I do it all the time I I can't help it yeah so you know what's the Tony and Sam story I mean you guys are long time friends and started this band how long do you know each other
we but now we probably know each other like 15 years 20 to yeah 15 to 20 years wow we met in early high school yeah thank you like a mutual friend Sam didn't play
bass when I met him no I mean really bass oh that's how it always happens right it was a couple projects before Horace Green and I played guitar and I
think it was you and your cousin made a band called the Devon port yep me my cousin Chris and I played guitar and they wanted me to play but they asked me to play bass
so yeah you didn't you didn't buy your own base for a while I was living on borrowed gear for like for probably like years that's a good one I like that oh that's
interesting well hey let's see what happens let's kick it off with some live music from the man city with Horace Green presented by the Aaron Weber group the first song that you have
for us tonight it's called sunflower silo and it's from your 2018 album diamond engine tell us about this song before you play this is just a it's a song about kind of getting older and I think a lot of people think it's a love song but it's not it's just a song about not
giving up the things you like doing as you get older Horace Green right here live from the man city I'm Maxing Gradio
good God please make me don't I want to see the mystery I hope for God was in everything
and what I used to have in life they have passed I'll bring them back when life ain't so fast but nostalgia's a
vice not just a memory a cry for a better time I never want to say goodbye to love I'll never want to say goodbye I never want to say
goodbye to love I'll never want to say goodbye to love to love
I'll come to me in times of need I get older so are we carrying my knees or is that my heart saying time to feed
I never want to say goodbye to love I'll never want to say goodbye to love I'll never want to say goodbye to love
and I chase my youth like a bullet chase a gun I can't only be here to have someone I don't
it seemed like yesterday we're having dreams we get someday and I'm always gonna be this way I never want to say
good bye to love I never want to say goodbye I never want to say goodbye to love I'll never want to say
goodbye I'll never want to say goodbye to love I'll never want to love too
to love, to love, to love
wow never going to say goodbye to love that is sunflowers silo horse green right here
inner studio live from the man city on maxing radio horse green has been touring relentlessly
for seven years what can you tell us about red roof ins oh man sam sam can tell you about red
roof ins we accidentally trashed a red roof red roof in room yeah red roof in room accidently
yeah they uh we were playing an Indianapolis and the guys like oh yeah oh well you come through
he heard our songs he liked us he's like come through we'll put you up and we're like oh cool
we'll stay right in the city it was like this red roof in like 10 minutes outside the city and
just kind of like a dumpy place and there was only two beds and three human adults and I
had my hammock with me so I'm like I'll just string up my hammock and it'll be fine in the hotel
yeah in the hotel so what did you tie it to I tied it to the door knob and then the front door
the front door and then the dresser and I ripped the entire dresser like for sad thing off of the
oh and I I was like I had I'd been like laying in it for like 20 minutes and then I'd like
sat back down to like getting to bed and it just collapsed yeah and I'm on the floor then you
tied it to the TV oh yeah the TV was like the TV stand was like bolted to the top of the
that we know bolted yeah all night I heard that hammock creaking yeah I was sleeping right in front
of the dresser and I was like this thing to lie off and destroy me I've never heard of a bad
taking hammocks on tour yeah yeah that's pretty good actually yeah except for out of no
about tying into the TV yeah we didn't get charged we tried to put them together we put it yeah we
put it back together best we could well let's get to know the band tonight and Sam let's start with
you uh bass guitars and vocals how do you get started playing music it sounds like you started
on guitar yeah I started on guitar um I was playing guitar hero 2 and I really liked the song
sweet child of mine that like uh huh I don't know that song just stuck with me it really got me
into like I was like oh I got to learn to play guitar this is super cool so I got a guitar
and started taking music lessons and that was the first song I wanted to learn which is not an
easy first song no learn so I like struggled through that for like six months and then you know
it kind of came and went and then yeah just took guitar lessons like for years and
but how did you get into that what was your parents role in your musical upbringing my mom she
always liked like the Beatles and stuff and she'd play music around the house so I always had that
the music collection yeah I see on the old 45s and stuff it was pretty cool so you got into
the lessons on your own you pursued yeah that was like um the the video game kind of inspired me
so video games do do some good wow who knew right here on maxing radio let's get back to
live music from the mad city with horse green presented by the air and webber group the next song
you have for us tonight it is from the diamond engine album and it's called we could be lovers uh
I saw this bumper sticker on highway 41 outside of five like was that you guys whoa what did it say
whoa it said the name of the song that might say we could be lovers that might be a bootleg
yes someone someone's making bootleg horse green right right there which has happened yeah
oh you're already that famous like you should be proud of yourself yeah maybe
all right let's hear it uh we could be lovers right here live from the mad city on maxing
radio
Music
Midnight goes down
Lonely hearts break out
You find a romance new
But you're gonna hit that dance tonight
I have tonight
I have tonight
We could be lost
In the broad lights
We could be lovers
We could be lovers
In the broad lights
We could be lovers
Music
But heartache shoots everybody
You better watch good
They only liked you for your body
Think twice and now
And darling when you come
I lose out of my mind
Out of the mind
We could be lost
In the broad lights
We could be lovers
We could be lovers
In the broad lights
We could be lovers
Music
Music
We could be lovers
In the broad lights
We could be lovers
We could be lovers
We could be lovers
Music
But heartache shoots somebody
You better watch good
They only liked you for your body
Think twice and now
Wow, Horus Green
We could be lovers right here
on Max and Cradio live from the Man City
Tony on guitar and lead vocals
How did you get started playing music?
Well, I was playing guitar here too
What?
No, it's not possible
This little song called Sweet Child
Actually, I was joking
But I actually was playing guitar here too
My head and uncle who also played in a band in Wisconsin
They were called the Rock and Bones
Oh, yeah
They were playing a lot in the 90s and stuff
And he moved to Tennessee
But he taught me like the first pentatonic scale
When I got my first electric guitar
But I think it was guitar here
I'm not actually joking
I was joking at first
I remember thinking because I got really good at the game
And I could play on expert mode
And I told my mom when I was in middle school
When you play on expert on this game
It means you're as good as the actual guy
Not true
So I should get a guitar and start this thing
So we did
Well, you can use it as leverage
That's okay
Get that instrument
Because that's not your first guitar
That grouch you're playing tonight, right?
No, I traded someone on Craigslist for this like
Really?
Wow
That's a really nice guitar
Tell people about your grouch
This is a grouch duo jet
It's a custom shop
I don't think they actually make this one
It's got
I took the pickups out
And like you'll drill the bigger cavity
For these other pickups
These are Seymour Duncan's
And they just kind of give it
Yeah, a little more
Classic one star
You know, in bridge
Yeah, yeah
A great looking guitar
If prints were in a jam band from Ockash
It would be called Horse Green
And you just released a new single
From your upcoming album called Cream
Why is this the summer and fall of cream?
The fall?
Yes, we have entered the fall of cream
The fall of cream
It's because of cream
We actually wanted to release it in June
But we were way too optimistic with our timeline
So yeah
And ended up being the summer leading up to cream
Not the summer after cream
So that song was just released like a week or so ago, right?
Cream, actually
Well, cream came a month ago
Okay, a month ago
Yeah
Because we've been playing here on Maxing Radio
A great song
And so let's get back to live music from the man city
With Horse Green presented by the Aaron Weber group
The next song you have for us
It's your latest single called Cream
Um, does this song float to the top?
The cream always rises to the top
Yeah
What's the song about?
Well, what's the
What's the
What's the
What's the age range of the listener based
Oh, you know
Well, it's just FCC compliance
I don't think there's an age
It's not about what you think of it
It's about music, actually
It's about music
The cream, I always felt like the cream was like
You know that magical shimmer you get when a song really tickles your brain
Yeah
That's the cream, you know, he says it in the song
That's so cream
Who horse does horse yet horse
Oh, wow
Yeah, the songs are getting a lot of air play on the station
Yeah, there's a lot of cream
They're very creamy station
Yeah, the cream of the crowd
We only played the cream of the crowd and we got cream
All right
It's a true honor
Well, hey, let's hear it live right here
Live from the man city on Maxing Radio
It's Horus Green and this is their latest single cream
You're listening to Maxing Radio
Cream
Cream
Must beat it
Cream
Cream
Electric heaven grabbing her
Move your body with your soul
How we dream it over songs
As we move across the floor
Oh, till it doesn't prove yet
Pick you up and get you a man
Is that your brain?
Give it into the groove
There's nothing you can do
That's so cream
The currency of ecstasy
Turn and go to secrecy
Sister Sonic filled the ocean
We can ride on this emotion
Turning on and on
The universe is ours
Oh, till it doesn't prove yet
Pick you up and get you a man
Is that your brain?
Give it into the groove
There's nothing you can do
That's so cream
The currency of ecstasy
Turn and go to secrecy
That's so cream
That currency of ecstasy
It's so cream
Turn and go to secrecy
We're feeling good right now
Will we survive it when the phone breaks down
Is that your brain?
Give it into the groove
There's nothing you can do
Is that your brain?
Give it into the groove
There's nothing you can do
Is that your brain?
Give it into the groove
There's nothing you can do
Is that your brain?
Give it into the groove
There's nothing you can do
Must be cream
The currency of ecstasy
Must be cream
Turn and go to secrecy
Must be cream
The currency of ecstasy
Must be cream
Turn and go to secrecy
Must be cream
The currency of ecstasy
Must be cream
Turn and go to secrecy
Must be cream
Turn and go to secrecy
Must be cream
Turn and go to secrecy
Wow, horse green, cream live right here from the Mad City
We're going to take a little break and we'll be right back with horse green live from the Mad City
Right now, back to horse green
Let's give the drummer some
Austin, you're on the drums here tonight
Yes, sir
How did you get started in music?
I got started in music
I started playing drums when I was about 10 years old
Funny enough, there's this game called the guitar hero
I'm kidding
That's rock band
That's when the finally the drummer's got some
I love that
I love that
Give the drummer some
That's a James Brown thing
I love that very much
This is Clyde Stubblefield
He's a big influence of mine
So a lot of the funk drumming I studied him for about a year
When I went to college and I was really digging in on some of his album work as Clyde
I think it's Jabble Starks
It was the other drummer
And I did a lot of listening in on them
And they're a huge inspiration
So I know Clyde was here for a very long time until
They moved here in the 70s
Yeah, so it's a lot of awesome person
The party was always in his kitchen
When you ever went over to his house
Everybody ended up partying in the kitchen
And he wrote a song called Parties in the Kitchen
I love that
So what was your parents role in your musical upbringing?
So my dad really didn't want to do the drums
As soon as I said, yeah I want to be a drummer
My brother, he played the clarinet
How was that going to get all right?
Exactly, so then I wanted to do the drums for the very longest time
And then finally my grandma talked to my dad
And talked some sense and said, hey, the kid wants to play drums
Let him play some drums
Go grandma
I know, and that's really the main reason why I'm playing today
Is that she let me get that drum set
Talk to my dad and said, hey, that drum set
You got to get it for him, so...
Was it set up at grandma's house?
It was that
Absolutely set up at grandma's house, so...
Go grandma
Yeah, that was the deal
It's a note of grandma
Oh, that is so fun, very cool
Well, let's get over to Horse Green
Has a new album coming out
And so far you've released two songs
Cream which we just heard and Nighttime Boy
Which we'll hear next
Tell us about your upcoming album
So the upcoming album
We've put a lot of work into this
That we've been doing this
Oh man
So I jumped on with the band in late 2019
And maybe very early 2020
They introduced some of the songs in the album
They said, hey, take a look at this
See what you can do
And this album has been in the works for years and years and years
And finally we got into the studio
We got so much, obviously with COVID and everything
And there's a lot of the latest
It's all a home studio in Oshkosh
Okay
So it was a really really cool opportunity to play
And do it yourself
Type of thing
And it was a lot of hard work
And it was a lot of long nights
I mean, we were recording
Until midnight maybe later sometimes
Wow
I mean, we all have stuff during the day
And so the only time to do it is late at night
And we'd have countless nights
They were pretty late
And put a lot of work into it
But the album was finally finished
I think maybe very early late spring
Or I should say late spring early summer
That makes more sense
But that's when we kind of completed the album work
And we're really excited to
The album is not done
Oh, it's not done
I was just going to say
I mean, are you going to keep releasing it as singles
Or when can we maybe
The album
Find this album
The stints thinking of the diamond engine
The new album is like 20% done
Yeah
Okay
But we're getting there
We're all done with the drums
You think you'll put it out on vinyl in them?
Yes
Definitely
We just got vinyl for night time boy and cream
A little 45
Your music is made for vinyl I think
I didn't know they still made 45
They do, they did it
Wow
They did it just for us
Just one
All right, we'll wrap it up
Well, let's get back to live music
From the Mad City with Horus Green
And presented by the Aaron Weber group
The next song you have for us tonight
It's called
Night Time Boy
And that's about B-O-I
B-O-I
I found that interesting
Tell us about this song before you play
Oh, Night Time Boy
Yeah, well, anybody can be a Night Time Boy
Can girls be Night Time Boy?
Absolutely
I'm glad you asked
Absolutely
Anybody can be a Night Time Boy
A Night Time Boy is just a person who
It feels like they need to get out there
Let's start living a little more life
Maybe at night
If that's where you want to do it
Awesome, let's hear it
Night Time Boy
You're listening to the Horus Green
Live from the Mad City on Maxink Radio
Late Night on alone
But we ain't coming down
Strangest feeling I got now
Got me breaking down
And maybe things just don't feel right
Maybe I got a fortnight
But I got it
How could I keep away?
I want to be a Night Time Boy
I want to be a Night Time Boy
I want to stay up till the moonlight
It's me out of my mind
How could I be missing this?
So much sweeties and they're getting there
Everything I'm looking in the morning
But I'm forgetting it
And babe, I could be your Night Boy
I stay bringing in the light next morning
I want to be a Night Time Boy
I want to be a Night Time Boy
I want to stay up till the moonlight
It's me out of my mind
And I won't be sleeping on this night
I'll come to the other side
I'll fall in love
I'll last myself
I want to be a Night Time Boy
I want to be a Night Time Boy
I want to stay up till the moonlight
It's me out of my mind
I want to be a Night Time Boy
I want to be a Night Time Boy
I want to stay up till the moonlight
It's me out of my mind
Night Time Boy
Well, I'm a little older, so guitar Hero 2 isn't out yet
Guitar Hero 1
I saw that and I said, don't they make real guitars?
Yeah, I get one of those real ones
Actually I was playing a lot of video games
That's the real honest truth
I was playing a lot of video games in my mom's
He's got to do something else
You want to maybe learn guitar?
I could get you some lessons and I was like, really?
Wow, this is kind of like when you believed in my two secret dreams in life
One to be rock star, which is working out right now
But the first one, they helped me fulfill earlier on
Because I was like, they got me karate lessons
I'm like, how did you know I wanted to be a full-time ninja
This is amazing
Full-time ninja guitar player
So supportive
Wow
Oh, that is so cool
And what, do you play other instruments or just guitar?
I barely can play guitar, so
This one's enough, I mean, that's one's enough
You used to carry harmonica
I could do a couple of harmonica riffs
Old Susanna, piano man
Oh, no, I can't do that
Just a couple of big blues licks, you know
Have you played in other bands around the area?
I have, yeah
What bands would we men know any?
Well, maybe, I currently play and traveling suitcase
Okay, sure
And there's a one you wouldn't have heard of
Or I write most of the stuff is called North Wind in the Sun
I've played with Walt Hamburger for a lot of years too
Yeah
Can we see any of your bands coming up anywhere?
Yeah
Traveling suitcase is...
We just played a thing over with Free Dirt
A few weeks or a month ago
I don't know anything currently right now
But some stuff in the coming weeks for sure
All right, well, let's get back to Horace Green here
And I have these words rolling with Roland
Roland with Roland?
What does that mean?
Roland with Roland
Roland spent a part of the band for...
Roland's really, he's really taken on a personality
He's taken the spotlight a couple times
Roland is a drum machine that Sam got during COVID
Yeah
Oh, yeah
One of those that you can play the drum beats on the buttons
Yeah, you kind of program it and then it plays, you know, it's one of the old vintage ones
And the cool color scheme and the...
We started doing these little jams that are less than a minute long
And then we post...
We write it, record it, film it
And then we post it all in like three hours
And we started doing that just like once a week
Just to stay in front of people on the internet
And people liked it so we just kept doing it
We actually just filmed the 100th Roland with Roland last week
Oh, wow
So...
Where can we work on top?
Where can we find these on YouTube?
Everywhere
Any YouTube, Instagram, TikTok
Or a screen band
Versatile
I dig it
Roland with Roland
All right, well, we'll have to check those out
In the meantime, let's get back to live music
From the man city with horror screen presented by the Aaron Weber group
The next song you have for us tonight, it is called
Lardon Damas
Lardon Damas
Lardon
I tried
From your diamond engine album
Is this song about bacon?
Bacon?
Yes
Not this one
No
Because I looked it up
And it said it was bacon
Okay
I'm going to have to look...
I'm going to have to fact check you on
What was the...
Which language?
Maybe I looked up the word Lardon
Lardon?
Lardon is about bacon, Lardron
You know what I see?
The importance of the typo
Lardon might be bacon
The thief of souls
It looks like...
Yeah, but that's the one I have
There's nothing to do with bacon
The thief of bacon would be a good...
The bacon of souls
I was so ready for Jimmy K to call up
And say, use that bacon
I'll tell us about the song before you play
This was one of the earliest songs I wrote
I wrote this like 10 years ago
And it's about...
I like to play characters sometimes in my mind
About...
And like come up with stories
This is one of those songs
And it's just about like...
It's a very open-ended song
So you could kind of take it how you want to take it
But to me, it was about like...
This being who saves people who are in hard times
And they kind of...
He kind of...
He or she rescues their spirit
And then tries to give it back in a better form
Or something
Wow
Interesting
Well, let's hear it
Lardron Dalmons
And by horse green
Right here, live from Man City on Maxing Radio
But I'm a put on back where they belong
This is my purpose forever I roam
I roam
To my home
You just can't see the light
So I'd admit, treat you right
You know I'm praying to you
We're going to make it through the night
You're the touch with a little brick skin
Build me what's an angle at me
But if you close your eyes
We'll be home again
You just can't see the light
So let me treat you right
And I'm a put on back where they belong
You're going to make it through the night
And I've seen too many people cry
And it's our journey
And the spirit feels me
You just can't see the light
So let me treat you right
And I'm a put on back where they belong
You're going to make it through the night
You're going to make it through the night
You're going to make it through the night
You're going to make it through the night
You're going to make it through the night
So let me treat you right
What do you know about this, Tammy?
I don't know much about this
But it's out, it's like 15 minutes north of La Crosse
Right on the Mississippi River
And scenic
Yeah, very scenic
It's right on the, we played the Trimpello Hotel
Also very scenic
Oh yeah, I love that place
Yeah, it's really cool
But it's in town there
And it's in Orchard
And they do a big celebration every fall
Honeycris Putanani
Big tent, couple stages, a lot of musicians
Sounds like a blast
And you guys will be playing
How do we keep up with Horace Green online?
And I know my wife Alice is locked on your Spotify page
Where else can we find you guys?
YouTube, but everywhere
Anywhere
The website, we have a website
Oh, what's your website?
Horace Green.com
And that's green with an e
That is
G-R-E and e
Yes, thank you
Oh, that's really important
Highly important
And it's out on that e
Are you going to get a weirder experience?
There is a band Horace Green from where
Mexico, Argentina, Brazil
Is that possible?
Yeah, and it's
Without the e
They're a metal band
So yeah
They're our brothers from
Oh, that's perfect
And they're probably like
Well, we're a metal band
But we wanted to name our band after like a blues guy
Yeah, probably
Tony Sam Todd Austin
Thank you so much for coming down to Madison to perform tonight
I'm Maxing Gradio
We really appreciate it
Thank you
The last song you have for us tonight
It's called Don't You Stop
Quickly tell us about this song before you go
Oh, man, this was a
This song went through some iterations
But this song is just about
Standing up for things and getting out there
And you know, sometimes
You got to do something uncomfortable
To make a change
Todd thinks it's about fish fries
Fish fries till you break through
Alright, fish fries
A tune about fish fries
Don't you stop
Don't you stop eating those fish fries
This horror screen
Right here
Maxing Gradio
Get out your car
Tonight we go in real fun
The city's hot
But don't you stop
Until you get what you claim out for
But don't let the men shake
You fish fries till you break through
Nobody can touch your love
It's a great dance
But don't break any heart
It's a slow dance
The way this America starts
But don't let the men shake
You fish fries till you break through
Nobody can touch your love
You can take two
The streets with all your fire
They can't break you
But love knows they will try
You will try
You have the power
But you know
That the law is coming down
Just hate to the streets with all your fire
They can't break you
But love knows they will try
You have the power
But you know
That the law is coming down
You have the power
But love knows they will try
You have the power
But love knows they will try
You have the power
Oh man
Oh horse green
Right here on Maxing Gradio
Don't you stop
That was awesome
You guys had a great performance
I've really enjoyed it
