He is going to be in here talking about his Madison Grindcore band and their show happening tomorrow night at the Gameray Bar.

Chakari is coming in.

It's just going to be amazing.

She's a singer and songwriter and she recorded her first album in the bathroom on her phone.

On her phone.

And we're going to hear about this.

I mean Boston recorded their incredible debut in a basement.

So I'm sure this is just as impressive.

That's right.

I said new song from Trappership.

So we'll hear that.

Now I was telling you about American scarecrows.

And they're from Minnesota.

And they're great band.

They play in Madison quite a bit.

We had a man at Woodfest this year.

And they're coming back down on November 21st.

To the Barrymore Theater, they'll be playing the 12th annual flannel fest.

And flannel fest is pretty cool.

That's the keep Wisconsin warm and cool fund.

So like today, for instance, we're keeping Wisconsin cool.

Yeah.

And probably next week we'll be going to warm them up.

They have raised $169,000 for this fund in 12 years.

And that's quite a bit of money.

Isn't that crazy?

So, you know, who puts it on?

It's the mascot theory in the Beth Killing Band.

So they'll both be playing as well.

And then headlining the event is the record company.

And they're kind of a national band coming around.

So that's going to be pretty cool.

Barrymore Theater, 12th annual flannel fest.

That is Friday, November 21st.

You can play in for it.

I believe that the day or the night before that,

they're up in Appleton again.

So it kind of tours Wisconsin.

But for you, Madison people, we're right here at the Barrymore,

make some plans.

It's 40 bucks, I think, for the whole thing for it to take it.

Wait, how many bands did you say?

Like just for 40 bucks?

How many bands is that?

Four.

The record company, the mascot theory, Beth Killing Band,

and American scarecrow.

So that's $10 a band.

I tell you that's a bargain, no?

Well, I think it's a huge bargain.

I mean, Barrymore is a great place to see a band.

And you know what?

We're going to play actually a couple songs.

I think the most important historical things that I photographed are all of the street actions in Madison.

I've always been down for the protest.

I played in a band Chronic Jones that was a political band and I would do photographs and then make them into YouTube videos with the music and the photographs.

But the photographs would be of various protests.

And one I'm really proud of from Chronic Jones is 2005 Day of the Dead.

Everybody's carrying signs of, say, free Palestine.

We're talking 2005.

And then the music track is kind of a political, yeah.

So we know you have your Talbot Gallery on Atwood Avenue.

Tell us the story of how you came to get that property.

Like what was your inspiration for having your own gallery?

My inspiration was a woman friend of mine pointing her finger at it and saying, well that's for rent.

And while I'm just going to do my last wedding, I did wedding photography.

I did well enough. I owned an airplane.

So I flew down to Mexico.

But right before I left, my friend pointed at the building that snouled my gallery.

And I went next door to talk to Bob Hansen, the owner of Mr. Roberts, Byron Grill.

And I just sort of asked him about it.

And then I went and shot my wedding.

And I came back two weeks later in the for sale or the for rent signs down.

And I go and I say, I see you rented the building and he said to me, well I decided to rent it to you.

And I was kind of, I didn't say I wanted to rent it.

But I went home, took a day and thought about it and rented it.

So that's how I got the building.

It was just fortuitous.

And now you've had your gallery since 2011.

But there are some pretty cool things coming up in its future.

I know you had a big surprise you wanted to talk about.

Well, the surprise I wanted to talk about is the fact that unfortunately Bob Hansen,

the man that rented my space to me, I died.

I died about three months ago.

And so my building is now being put up for sale by the family, which means I have to move.

And of course I'm saying they're fretting about it.

Where am I going to go?

I really love my spot.

You know, am I going to go on the bottom of a retail?

I don't want to do that.

I just like my funky gallery.

So Bruce from Country Antiques, which is four doors up on the block from me,

came into my gallery about a week after I started fretting and said,

I'm looking for somebody to rent my retail space.

Do you know anybody?

The star is aligned for you.

Yeah.

And I said, I need a spot.

And he went, really?

And he was thrilled.

And I'm thrilled.

Oh, wow.

And he's totally remodeling his space.

It's much bigger than my present gallery.

It's got three window walls.

Country Antiques.

It's right across the street from Monty's Blue Plate.

It's perfect.

Yeah.

So that's my big surprise.

And I haven't talked about it.

And now I'm announcing it.

Wow, premiered right here on Mexican Radio.

Oh, that's pretty cool.

Hey, Terry, you know, we were messaging a little bit.

And you were telling me that you had photographed Paul Black,

legendary slide guitar player here in Madison.

And he just recently passed.

Do you have anything to say on it?

I think he was a wonderful musician.

He was a beautiful human being.

He was grouchy as hell.

He was a great guy.

And I was just telling a friend of mine today about having a run across the video I shot

of him with Doc and Terry Roddy.

I didn't know if you know them.

Yeah, sort of folk.

The Roddies.

At their farm sitting around the campfire jamming.

Wow.

And Paul Black was like Clyde.

Yeah.

You know, they both would, they were, and Jim Schwalto.

Yes.

All three of those musicians were really wonderful musicians.

I was very talented, but totally down the earth, no ego.

And they would sit in and play with anybody.

They really would.

I saw Clyde playing with the bad randies.

I'm trying through Proville, Wisconsin.

There's a sign that says bad randies and go, what's that?

So I stopped to go here.

I can hear countrywester music.

Can I walk around the corner?

And also, I know you have things going on at your gallery right now.

Tell us about the gallery jam.

And I know we were talking about the future of maybe having movie nights there.

Yeah, I want to do that.

And I have jams on Sunday afternoons from three to five thirty.

Acoustic it together.

Well, sometimes they're electric too.

They'll be able to definitely be bigger and more electric in the new space I'll be in.

Oh, something else I want to mention is I just yesterday picked up my best of Madison third place for art gallery.

Congratulations.

And this is the third year in a row.

the central from Madison is one such band formed in 2010 it's like the experimental side of Frank Zappa created a

dual grind core band with the fastest drummer on the planet Alex Roberts the central will be taking their

experimental grind core show live at the gamma ray bar on Sunday September 28th and in the studio right now

with us is Frankie Ferrillo of the central Frankie welcome to maxing radio hello thanks for having me

wow grind core Frankie how did you get started playing music I mean what's your backstory how did I get started

well I actually started with drums I was baking the drums my pops who's in a band called the

Rousers plays around here not so much anymore okay bought me a drum set yes that was the start of the musical

career and what's what's your dad's name Frank Ferrillo Frank Ferrillo in the

jazz oh I can't believe that that is so awesome so your dad he's already in a band right so what he is how

old were you and you started playing drums I think that was around eight years older so

got me a drum set even though we lived in an apartment so I was that obnoxious kid oh my but we had the

nicest neighbors in the world so did he give you drum so drum lessons or did he have you go

somewhere else no lessons I was kind of obstinate to taking lessons as a kid you know stubborn kid stuff

just wanted to bang bang around on the crashers so nice well now you play guitar right yeah yeah how did

you drifting from drums to guitar well more or less there's just been a big music love in the

family so yeah just kind of whatever is around the house my aunt Jackie actually got me a

electric guitar I think close to around the same age and wow then I yeah I gravitated more

towards guitar you're like Duolingo yeah I guess yeah you know so tell me what is experimental

genre blending grindcore that's a good question well I guess like our main sort of sound is grind

core the experimental part is we like to throw their genres in there yeah we're very influenced by

soul world music you know that sort of thing so we really trying it particularly like to get weird

rhythms in there we're very rhythm focused yeah weird time signatures there's a little bit of

almost like you know I go back to the 80s like stormtroopers of death or something okay yeah yeah I

like that you said Frank Zappa there's there's definitely a lot of Frank Zappa in well Frank Zappa

I mean when you listen to some of the music it goes back and forth it's very different than music you

might be hearing on the radio most of the time so and I remember Frank Zappa back you know he did

many albums where he really drifted between these sound effects and parts and sometimes they almost

seem disjointed or not even connected right and I heard that a little bit in your music well tell us

about the band I'm sorry so non-traditional songwriting techniques tell us the style that other

bands that follow your category what other bands like I said stormtroopers of death but who would

you attribute maybe to some of your inspirations well I think I'm trying to speak for Alex too who is

definitely the second half of the band we'll hear about you we're big influenced by rhythm focused

music drummer focused music is a big one bands particular bands Dillon sure escape plan was a big one oh I see

another band called daughters right now we're really influenced by a French band called poil they are

very underground but they as far as rhythm music goes as far as drummer focused music this is some of the most

inspiring stuff I've heard recently well tell us about your band the central you guys are definitely

different and also you know give the drummer something tell us about your drummer Alex Roberts because he

is fast yes Al is is quite a human he's definitely an inspiration to be around very very technical drummer

very creative I've worked with a lot of drummers in my life just in other bands you know music stuff and

he's my favorite in the world best friend best friend of life yeah no he's he's like an encyclopedia when

you talk to him of knowledge whether it be history music or anything really he should be here talking

tonight he's much better at talking but you got me so we got you and in the central this is a duo it

we're we kind of do the steely dan thing where it's we two people that write and we'll hire some people

like a bass player whatever maybe another guitar player do big live things but we also do live stuff

as a duo tomorrow we're playing at the gamma rays of duo but yeah no that just me and Alex do all

the writing all the recording and in production up until this recent album that we just finished

now did you did you track that out of yourself or did you go into a studio we went into a studio

for the first time we did it we actually did something oh what studio give me a shout out signature

tone in Minneapolis an incredible studio incredible engineer Adam Tucker up there another encyclopedia

of music knowledge just incredible sounds right away we're mixing with our close friend Kyle

Grayson also out of Minneapolis who has been bugging us for about 10 years to do a project together

so we're finally doing it so many finally's in this album nice happening because well you guys

have been together since like 2010 right yes yeah we started in 2010 we were both in high school

and here we are the central has finished recording a new album out next year right

we'll see well it's gonna be out I will definitely release something next year we have more

unreleased music than we have released music right now so we have so much stuff just in the library

sitting so we're definitely released something as far as the album that we just finished tracking

I don't know okay we'll just see how the how the world works well the central is playing the

gamma ray bar tomorrow night tell us about that show yeah that's playing with you guys okay so this

is a very mixed cool lineup if you're a fan of music at all whether it be heavy or melodic you'll

like something here the starting off the show tomorrow is a band called dilatant if I am pronouncing

that correctly okay they're like a math rock pop sort of thing instrumental really cool

I was like animal collective deals yes yes they have some animal collective vibes really good

guitar work after them is a band called ven from Minneapolis okay they're looking at their

what they call them so they're called post hardcore I'm not as educated into the post hardcore

genre but they they're heavy they're slow from what I was hearing very tight very talented

after them another band from Minneapolis called grim lot and they're just like a kind of poppy rock

and roll band really catchy kind of funky female vocals really good stuff and then after them the

most loudest then annoying most annoying band in all of Madison Wisconsin the central a two-piece

grindcore with screaming and a lot of loud noises very diverse lineup like people yeah this is

what I'm saying I love diverse lineups I like mixed genres I really think that should be more

of a thing in the city you better yet like don't be a mystery like don't tell them what's

coming right not socks off I've had that many times where I've gone to a show not knowing

the way there and was so surprised by a band that I had no idea was going to be there is completely

out of the blue that's always the best it's the best you know I mean one of the reasons why Max

and Gradio plays local music is just to get people familiar with music so that they can maybe see

a show this didn't say well I've heard them right because it's too often where you know somebody

hasn't heard of a band they're like well I'm not going right exactly yeah that's too much for a man

I've never heard so yeah that's kind of why we exist you don't get people out to shows well you're

doing good work you're playing the actual sounds of Madison like you hear the advertisements the

sounds of Madison here is Katie Barry I'm looking for a job so well you're getting a very good
