Elliott Franklin in the studio naughty dog is a small batch craft hot sauce and was born during
the pandemic in 2020 creator Elliott Franklin of Madison he found inspiration on Netflix and YouTube
wherever he seemed to be reinventing themselves and then Elliott made a batch of hot sauce that
actually wrote down the recipe creating something you could call his own and name it after his
dog Romeo in the studio right now is Elliott Franklin creator of naughty dog sauce welcome
bank to maxing radio all right thanks thank you yeah and as I always say I tell the people that
come to my booth yet welcome to naughty dog hot sauce now is you is Romeo is he actually naughty
he was the world's oldest puppy yeah yeah he lived to be about 14 years old but um yeah he just
was a puppy and he just decided to stay that way so I just always call him naughty dog so
ah that's where the name comes from well Elliott tell us a little about yourself and how you came
to be a hot sauce pernure I mean what's your backstory oh my gosh yeah so it just uh
oh bless my mother so yeah she made us eat what we was in front of us so yeah I just got
this affinity for hot sauce so yeah just I always ate it I didn't I just became an efficient
idol and kind of like a sommelier of hot sauce you know so um yeah it's always been a part of my life
and then um during pandemic I got born at idle time and you know everybody else was kind of
reinventing themselves and pivoting and whatever so I just said both I'll just make some hot sauce
and I didn't intend for it to be a business at all yeah it was just something to do to keep my
mind you know occupied you know so um it made some hot sauce once the world opened back up I gave
it to some friends and the demand was just more than I had expected you know so yeah um
they and since then I'm buying it you know and I'm like why didn't make it for that intention but
you know if you want to pay me for it I guess I'll just make a business out of this and wow
yes my arm you know yeah so try to come up with the name and Naughty Dog kind of stuck and uh yeah
I just found an old picture of Romeo and kind of friend of mine sister did a little mosaic what
you'll see on the Naughty Dog website Instagram Facebook Shameless Plug and um yeah Naughty Talk
Naughty Dog sauce hot sauce born yeah here we go let me ask you this uh kids that are exposed to
hot sauce from their parents growing up versus kids that are not are those the same people that don't
like hot sauce that that didn't get it as a kid yeah it's funny um my mom wasn't uh she wasn't
big in hot sauce but it was just like uh yeah it's let me say it like this um the flavor was lacking
oh mom's gonna be mad oh boy so is either salt pepper hot sauce so I chose hot sauce and uh
yeah so it just be kind of a came of thing and just uh kind of like that endorphin rush and it's
got therapeutic uh properties it'll cure you know arthritis um cancer hangovers you know but
yeah everything so yeah we don't know about that I know personally I my mom did not like hot sauce
so I never really got it as a kid but I I love it now as an adult the older I've gotten
my heat tolerance as well how how tasty was your mom's food Jimmy
next question all right back to our interview tell us about your Naughty Dog hot sauce um you use a lot
of natural ingredients right I do yeah um I got uh my hot sauce is a little non-traditional is
opposed to most hot sauce is um my um I use a tomato base yeah a lot of it is just a lot of vinegar
like if you have Tabasco I mean they're doing their own thing but it's just it's just basically like
spice vinegar yeah I got a tomato base it gives it a brighter more complex you know flavor profile
so um and that happened on accident as well so yeah it just uh it gives it a different vibe you know
if you will and the tomato bases versus what other base that you that wouldn't be normal
traditional hot sauces yeah like Tabasco I mean they ferment their peppers for a long time and I
do the same thing myself but it's just it's it's it's it's mainly vinegar so tomato or pepper base
are the hot sauce right yeah um a lot of hot sauces don't you as a tomato base yeah and I do
it's a little salsa yeah yeah exactly yeah it's more of a coniment rather than just like a
garnish I guess now you have a new line that's coming on I'm just looking at this it's called
Bruins Farm it's uh Northside Farmers Market Edition and I know that you are at the Northside
Farmers Market here in Madison uh every Sunday yeah and I was I was looking at this and it says
ingredients are all sourced from the vendors at the Northside Farmers Market I think that's
pretty cool yeah so I came up with this crazy idea you know I'm sitting at the market and I'm like
well what if I just curated a hot sauce with all the ingredients from the vendors you know give
them a little shine you know well wow so um my biggest obstacle was trying to find a pepper because
you know a lot of vendors at markets they just sell like jalapenos which you know it wanted to
be a red sauce so I found yellow dog farms and um so they had some sort of peppers some jalapenos
or jalapenos but habaneros and um they had a pepper called uh um kind of like a cherry bomb I think
it's called yeah yeah shout out to the uh runaways and Joan Jett and all that yeah so yeah you know
what I'm talking about yeah so um yeah so I'm like I got to have that so throw those in the bag
and stuff so um for many of those for a few weeks and uh just through in the onion garlic and
then I got um kombucha from our Mr. T's kombucha yeah he's my my market mate yeah we've kind
of got a bond through that you know so um and his kombucha is really good oh sir yeah it is
it really good yeah it's not like any other kombucha so you know we became friends you know
through the whole market situation and stuff and uh yeah so I told him that somebody was doing a
kombucha hot sauce and he's like well you know when I do my kombucha it produces a vinegar I'll
give you some vinegar and so we met up and he gave me a jar of it and I'm like when we throw that
in there I mean that's I mean how can you like curate a hot sauce all the way down to the vinegar
I mean yeah come on now wow yeah so um yeah so I did that so it's got a probiotic properties
in it along with my fermented peppers and uh yeah so I named it um brunch farm um so we're the
north side farmers market is that it's um that piece of land was owned by the bruns back up until
like the early 60s oh I see okay yeah so um the mayor at the time wanted to expand out to the
north side so he knew that in order to you know get expansion out there they need the people in
that area needed like a shopping hub so he bought the farm from this family and they still own it
today and uh that I mean the farm's out there obviously you know it's you know ace and the library
you know that stuff and yeah so um yeah so it was uh I was trying to come up with a name of it so
I was thinking Madison mad you know something you know frat boyish you know whatever
so then I'm like no I got an idea yeah I'm gonna do the whole history thing because history is like
just yeah yeah it's just ruins farm yeah exactly so yeah so that's where the name came from so
I will say uh off air before before we before we came on here I I had sampled that hot sauce
your new stuff that we're just talking about here it is fantastic I the one thing I noticed about
it is not overpowering with the spice there is a little bit of heat to it but the flavor spot on
actually yeah I love it Elliott Franklin here from nutty dog hot sauce uh your product or
you've been featured with Anderson Cooper on CNN is that right yeah this is a wild story so um
so I was doing um the north or the uh the de force farmers market last summer and I see this
news crew kind of moving around I just thought it was like a public access crew you know whatever
and so I wasn't really paying attention to it so um anyhow I was getting ready to break down
and this lady approached me and she's like well do you want to take a couple of questions about
the uh election I'm like yeah sure you know I'm like well what outlet are you with and so she named
something that didn't resonate with me and uh so I she gave me a couple questions and Tim Walls
it just got announced as the VP at that time and stuff so you know I know my stuff so you know
obviously able to give a good interview and so anyhow um she walked away and I asked her again
I'm like well what what organization are you with and she said oh we're with this entertainment
company but we work for CNN you'll be on Anderson Cooper on Thursday oh wow yeah so um I
watched it on Thursday and the segment didn't air and I just didn't think it was gonna happen
so that next week Friday I was going to the grocery store and I might Instagram pops off and um
some guy from New Jersey said hey yeah I saw your naughty dog t-shirt on CNN last night and I
want to buy some hot sauce on it what is going on here wow oh yeah oh that is too cool oh what
what uh do you have coming up I know that you're at the um north side farmers market every Sunday
but you're at a couple other places right yeah north side farmers market I'll be there every Sunday
from I think it starts at eight to twelve thirty so yeah you need to find me that's where I'll be
religiously um I'm looking at getting into the bodega that'll be Thursday night that's a breeze breeze
steam and yeah I reached out to them makers market I did that last fall good show so if you're ever
in the area in some prairie and makers market you'll be able to catch me there and uh yeah if you

little more intense than I expected it to be so I'm right in between the farmers market phase and
the retail phase but hopefully by the end of the summer you'll be able to get it on a shelf
