And our first guest will be Parker Barrow tonight when we'll be talking to them

from Birmingham, Alabama, where they're playing tonight.

And they'll be playing Atwood Fest on Sunday, July 28th here in Madison.

And in their band, they'll be in here talking about the new solution album.

And the shows they have coming up.

And Chad Goslin.

Big Lonesome Boston-based indie rock band that now has an album album.

And three shows in Wisconsin next week as part of their tour.

They're going to be talking to Terry Barrow about why they love playing in the Badger state.

And Wednesday night live.

That happens in Mount Hora of every Wednesday for the next couple of weeks.

What's the, uh, uh, I want to talk about food trucks, food carts.

Because there's an interesting story here.

What's the most interesting food that you've gotten at a food cart here, or wherever?

You know, what's your best meal out of a food cart?

Boy, you know, I don't know that I've seen more crazy.

It seems on TV, you know, with all kinds of things from Snickers,

bars and deep fried ice cream cones.

But I would say when I was out in Milwaukee, I went to a Mexican food cart truck.

This big old truck that was on the street, I was doing some business out there.

And I just took a chance and got one of the best burritos I had ever had.

Hand to me freshly made.

And I got to sit and listen to some great Latin music.

And, uh, wow.

If you're in Madison, you can actually volunteer to be a reviewer

for Madison food carts.

What?

Uh, this is from the city of Madison, uh, website.

If you, uh, if you want to, if you're a fan of food carts,

you can participate in the reviewing process.

You would review a bunch of food carts.

The city uses that information for placement for these food carts

along the UW campus and the capital square concourse here in Madison.

Wow.

So, I mean, there was a specific day you have to show up for a little bit of training.

And I guess there's some guidelines.

And then, uh, you, you have like, uh, 30 food carts that you have to review.

It's unclear.

It's unclear if the, if the food is paid for, if you have to pay for the food,

it's a volunteer position.

So you have to sign a release like, if you gain weight, you can't see the city.

Because you reviewed, reviewed their food carts.

I looked at the application.

There's actually a section for dietary restrictions and needs like that.

Oh boy.

You know, I would imagine if you're trying to diet, this is probably not something for you.

I would love to do this because I love food, first of all,

and I love courteaking food.

Yeah.

And I think it in a roundabout way would be kind of a fun way to support local businesses here in Madison.

You know, uh, because, you know, all the food carts, they're,

they're your typical mom pop small business.

Well, Jimmy, you know, I found that they actually have food truck Fridays

at the Waukesha County Airport out in Waukesha and they,

from 11 a.m.

to 1.30 p.m.

Food truck Fridays, they, they pull them in there and, uh,

I would imagine, you know, we're, we're on and, uh,

uh, handful of cities around the state of Wisconsin, you know,

Amory, lacrosso, Claire, uh, Green Bay, Ashkash,

you said, you said Green Bay.

There's the Green Bay food truck coalition up there.

The city of Madison is looking for volunteers to review food carts around the city of Madison or at least here in downtown.

It's unclear from what I see here online if if the meal is provided for you.

I can only assume it is really.

I mean, I mean, so you have to, I mean, you're paying 30 food carts.

I don't know.

Yeah, I think it's 30 reviews.

You have to write and we need to ask questions to me.

We do.

I tell you what?

If the if the city were to buy the food, which I I would guess they would almost have to or give you a discounted price or something like that.

That that would be a great deal.

I don't know.

In these days of limited budgets, it doesn't seem likely.

There is a food cart.

But you could still be a reviewer.

Yeah, you can still you just got to buy it yourself.

Use the airline card so you get the the miles, you know.

There's a few food cart that's stationed in one a key right on Main Street in one a key.

It's a it's a Mexican taco burritos tortas.

And I I've eaten there maybe ten times already and I love it, man.

You know, in hot days like it is now when it's hot and human out waiting ten minutes for your food, that kind of is undesirable.

But it's worth the reward at the end because it's fresh.

You know, let's just think about when you go to a food cart rocker, the food is fresh.

And in my opinion, it is made with love.

You know what else has a good food cart here in Madison is Bonzo.

Oh, yeah.

Bonzo is very tasty.

One of the tastiest.

But Jimmy, you know, you got me going on this food cart thing.

And now I've been in the the green bay food truck coalition.

And they have some really good food trucks.

I'm looking through here.

And they have even wonderful food and spirits.

So I guess you get drinks too.

In two weeks, two weeks from tonight,

that's when Atwood Fest starts,

I can't wait, it's gonna be such a great time that weekend.

Jimmy, taking their name from the infamous outlaw duo

of Bonnie and Parker and Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow,

Parker Barrow is a powerhouse,

Blues and Fuse Southern Rock and Roll band,

led by vocalist Megan Kane and her husband and drummer, Dylan Turner.

When a chance meeting brought them together in 2019,

the pair immediately hit it off,

and within a span of two weeks,

formed an acoustic duo,

a full time where they have lived ever since,

but now they have a full band.

Sunday, July 28th,

Parker Barrow will headline the Luther Allison stage

at Atwood Fest on Madison's East Side.

And tonight, Parker Barrow is getting ready to hit the stage

in Birmingham, Alabama.

Megan and Dylan, welcome to Maxine Gradio.

Hi, how are you doing?

Thank you for having us.

Thanks for coming on.

Before we call you,

we were talking about food carts here in Madison,

where you could do your reviews of food carts.

Do you two have a favorite food cart from your favorite city?

Man, I tell you what,

there is one that's actually in Nashville,

and if you ask me the name of it,

I could tell you right now,

but it's parked out as a far over in East Nashville

that's got a really good area of tacos.

That's probably our favorite food here,

but man, we do all kinds of heating on the road.

We stop at food trucks.

We even play a food truck festival one time.

That was really cool.

So food truck festival.

I would imagine food carts probably save a lot of lives

for professional musicians.

They really do.

They serve in light,

and are normally at least good enough at two right now.

Now, Megan, when Dylan met Megan,

how and where did the two of you meet,

and what is your marriage backstory?

So Dylan and I,

we met back in 2019,

a little showcase called Buske Jam in Nashville.

I was there with some friends,

and he was there with some friends,

and we actually ended up coming to see the same person

who eventually introduced us that night.

It really was just a chance meeting

in two weeks later after we met,

the lead singer of the band of Dylan came to Nashville

to put together,

she quit,

and when she quit,

he shot a shot and sent me a DM,

and it wasn't a week after that,

but I hopped on the road with them,

and you know,

the rest is kind of history with that.

We spent a lot of time together,

and this was a couple of months,

and eventually,

within a year,

after we decided that it was okay

for two band members today.

We started day in,

and in the February of 2022,

we got engaged,

and then we just celebrated our one-year anniversary,

Mac and May.

So,

it's kind of been smooth sailing

and easy for us,

and we're very fortunate that we get to do this together,

especially the way that we live our lives.

So now you're married,

you're a happy,

very couple.

What's that dynamic,

like being a married couple

on the road touring

with like a business or whatever?

Yeah, I mean, for us,

like,

we started our relationship as friends,

and we really built a very strong friendship

when we first started touring together,

and I mean,

it's really no different than just being

with your best friend at all times.

Like,

we obviously,

they're saying that we get frustrated about

and we deal with,

like,

I mean, we get to do this together,

and we kind of don't really ever take that for granted.

Not letting people get that opportunity

to work with their best friend,

marry their best friend,

and get to live on a dream with their best friend.

So we're very lucky,

and I feel like we haven't.

It works for us, you know?

It might not work for everybody,

but it definitely works for us.

Well, now for our listeners

who may not be familiar,

tell us about Parker Barrow,

the band,

and how did you choose the name?

Yeah, so,

like you said,

Dylan,

we met back in 2019,

and we really did just start touring.

We were,

we were kind of like a country rock cover band,

when we first started hitting things,

but the dream was always to do a virtual music.

And when we decided to release our first EP back in 2020,

we decided,

along with that,

we were going to change the name of the band

that we were touring under.

And we discussed it with our families,

and really,

Dylan's dad,

my father and all,

we kind of talked over with him,

and we figured

that the whole Bonnie and Clyde thing,

like people are competitive to that,

and obviously for us,

it's not about running,

like from something,

or running to something together,

and we kind of drew that from like their infamous love story

rather than their infamous story in general.

We,

we just don't really tend to that,

and like being able to,

we just live like all the runs together,

facing a dream.

You're not like,

you're not knocking off liquor stores, Dylan,

while you're on tour,

Bonnie and Clyde,

anything like that?

We keep it pretty clean.

Good.

Yeah.

Tell us about the band members.

Who's all in the band right now with you all?

Yeah.

So we,

right now,

we do have a ever-revolving door.

We tour anywhere from a

four or five piece to a ten piece band.

We'll be bringing our ten piece band up to Wisconsin,

which we're pretty excited about.

Um,

but really Dylan and I,

we, we started this thing,

and about a year and a half a day,

we met our departmenter,

Alexander,

um,

he was currently riding this new record with us,

uh,

that we'll talk about a little bit later.

But he's,

he's really joined in and,

and,

and came in full time,

and he's been with us for about a year and a half.

And really,

like the rest of the band,

we have so many talented members that,

that joined us on the road,

and,

and travel with us.

And it's really cool that we feel so many relationships

through doing this,

that we can bring in different people at different times

and do different things,

and it'd be excellent.

I don't know what they do.

So,

it's pretty cool.

we're very excited to bring our big band up to Wisconsin.

Now Parker Barrow released their debut album,

uh,

jukebox Gypsy's last summer,

and your video back to Birmingham,

where you're playing tonight has over one million views.

What do you attribute your success to?

Yeah, you know,

I mean, success is a hard thing to,

to contribute anything to,

um,

but we,

we put a lot of time and,

uh,

right back to Birmingham,

it's the first song that Dylan and I ever wrote together

back in 2019.

It was a song that's kind of lived on the shelf

for the past six years,

and we were very fortunate to have,

um,

our executive producer help us release

a record of pretty amazing video for it.

That was super proud of.

We got to go back,

go back to my hometown,

which is not too far from where we're at right now in Birmingham.

And we got to shoot a bunch of scenes there.

And just kind of,

I think like,

what's that song and what's the video and everything?

It's,

it's our life.

We, um,

it's what we were going through at the time.

I had just lost my grandmother.

I think a week before shooting that video,

and we really just kind of felt like,

it,

it came from a pretty honest place of us just living our lives out

in the road and being away from the people that we love.

And, uh,

we're,

we couldn't be more excited that it got over a million views.

I mean,

that's a dream come true for us.

Uh,

but it's something that we were very, very proud of.

And,

I don't even know who filmed it for us.

And our producer,

Steven and not,

who worked on the song with us,

really just made the whole thing come to life in a very special way.

So we're just glad that it was able to reach people

in the same way it reached us and was able to be a part of our story.

Did you hear that Richard Simmons passed away today?

At 76 years old, Richard Simmons.

And on the same day, Jimmy, we lost Dr. Ruth.

And Dr. Ruth passed away today.

Twenty years older.

She was 96 years old.

She was.

She was a helicopter survivor.

Yes.

And her story is quite remarkable.

Oh, yeah.

Dude, I remember.

So I, when I was a kid, growing up late 70s, early 80s, I had a little transistor radio.

And I mean, I was glued to that thing all the time.

I remember one of the programs I would listen to at night was Dr. Ruth talking about sex on the radio.

And I, she normalized it.

Well, she really did.

And, you know, I, I'm thinking, well, I'm going to listen to this.

This is interesting stuff.

And never did I, that it occurred to me that I actually learned stuff from Dr. Ruth.

Oh, my, Jimmy, I would ask you about what you learned.

But, well, I'm not going to go there.

I, I learned how to respect people that were different from me.

Yeah.

You know, I learned that it was okay to be different.

Yes.

And it's okay to enjoy things or not to enjoy things.

And I learned the general location of the clitoris.

Wow, Jimmy.

Well, those are all good things.

And Dr. Ruth, boy, she, she had just that great accent, great way of saying stuff.

And, you know, everybody, she was in her 50s when she was on the radio and then moved into TV.

Yes.

And she had up to two million viewers a week.

Her TV show was widely successful.

A lot of people.

And there was a lot of, it was just, for me, it was this fun to watch.

And I, it was, I took it as a learning experience.

Dr. Ruth was legendary, dude.

Now what about Richard Simmons?

So now Richard Simmons, he was something else, right?

He was a, he was kind of a fat kid.

And somebody was concerned about him.

And they wrote him a note once and they said, you know, you won't live long like this.

So change your way.

It's basically paraphrasing it.

And, you know, he found fitness and, wow, he had quite a career.

But he only made it to 76.

I'm trying to see what, oh, it's wet into the oldies.

That was the thing that he was a big no one.

That's what got him on the map and probably made him know his money was right into the oldies.

And Robics.

And it was really a, a Robics sort of was the, was his thing.

He really kind of, you know, the Beatles brought us, you know, Indian, Indian stuff.

And Richard Simmons brought us aerobics.

I'm sure he did.

put together with Generation Jones to support Joey song.

It is Generation Jones is Joey song in July, so we're taking the concept of Joey song,

which if you know is the January, big concert that they have that all kinds of stars kind

of fly in and participate, and you get to see all these different celebrities jam together.

And I thought, wouldn't that be neat if we could do that because at that woodfest, we

have all these local celebrities here.

And they happen to be in one place at one time, and on the east side, of course, a ton

of musicians live.

So I thought, wow, why don't we have Generation Jones, who is an all star band already,

right?

Moro Magellan on drums, Kyle Henderson on bass from the producers, you know, Georgia

satellites, Mike Massey and the guitar player from Chaser, Shawnee, Shawnee marks.

And so what we'll do is we'll have them, their band played Generation Jones, and then

we'll have cameo guest appearances from different local celebrities coming up on stage for

each song.

And it's really I think going to be a really unique experience, and it's the closer

of the festival.

It's pretty awesome.

And it's going to be great to see, of course, Joey Song, a benefit to raise awareness and

money for epilepsy and the prevention of that.

And it's a really cool story to go to just search for Joey Song online, and you'll see

the story.

And it's pretty cool at woodfest, happening Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28 here

in Madison.

And you know, there's like 20 or 30 food vendors alone, so it's amazing.

The smell of Atwood Fest is just amazing.

Paul is already a member of the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame, but this weekend, it's official,

he is being inducted to the Wisconsin Blues Hall of Fame.

It's happening during a show at Kachanskis in Milwaukee, and Paul is calling this a very

prestigious event, and, of course, an honor.

And if you want to check out Paul's skills, his band is the headliner of the Blues Crews

on Sunday afternoon, August 4th, at the East Side Club in Manona, Hot Blues, and some

Jimmy, British singer, Adrian Grimes toured extensively through the 80s and 90s with his band

Sumo Giants, sharing the stage with everyone from John Jet to Inve Malmsteen, but nobody beyond

Keith Richards lasts forever. And after going back to school to earn a PhD, Adrian Grimes has landed

here in Madison, Wisconsin, where he has answered a Craigslist ad in 2018.

And the solution was formed, formed with seasoned musicians from bands like Rox Ali, Paul Falcon,

the solution is an award-winning band and have just released their software albums still alive.

Well, thanks very much for having us.

So honored to have you guys here. You know, earlier we were talking about food trucks.

Did you as have any favorite food trucks in the area that you've been grabbing tacos or whatever

from? I don't even know if I know what that is. What's a food truck?

It's a, they don't have food trucks over in, no, they do. The classic in Britain is we all

pile out of the pub getting completely drunk and then we'd go get a donor cabab, which is like,

pretend meat on a, on a pizza bread. Next time you do that, I want to come with you.

Yeah, it's awesome. It, you know, drips down your chin onto your shirt and you can't wear it

beyond that. So it's, it's all cool. I love that. That sounds like a lot of fun.

We heard a little bit, but tell us a little bit more about the solution from your perspective.

So yeah, I, as you've mentioned, I went back to school. I gave up music for a long,

long time and like took all the piercings out and decided to be a serious human being for a change.

And it didn't work at all. Ended up on and kinds of stuff. And yeah, I finally decided I want to

get back into it. And so landed in Madison in about 2011 and started to look at what the music

scene was like. And there was this Craigslist ad. And it was like, oh, you know, we're all cool.

And we, it's a keystone thing. You can just come in and join. And I thought, well, I'm a lead singer.

That's what I do anyway. You know, I just turn up and sing. Doesn't quite work out that way now.

But anyway, I turned up and really liked these guys. I was worried that because, you know,

I'm no spring chicken that this would be like a bunch of youngsters and they'd be like, you're too

old man. But no, it's worked out fantastically. And, you know, we've been together now since

what 2018? Was that our first gig? Yeah, that's right. That was frightening. So when this guy

shows up at our audition, if you will, it took us about a half a song and where I was just kind

of looking at each other going, okay, nobody say anything. Get it up. Let's go. What was the

inspiration for you to answer the Craigslist ad? I mean, what was it that you were looking to do?

Again, just get back into music because I'd given up for such a long time. And, you know,

this, that old classic adage about you can take the boy out the band, but you can't take the band

out of the boy. And that was the case. I needed to get back into something that was beyond

work, beyond normal life. I wanted to, you know, jump back on the stage and, and, and be a rock star.

Yeah, help. I think I'm a rock star. Yeah. So that was what it was all about. And, and ever since then,

so for the past five, six years, we've just been jamming out with a pretty unique show.

Everyone that comes to see us recognizes that we have a fantastic time. We, we get on with each

other on stage. There's lots of smiles, lots of laughing, but we wear a kill. I do wear a kill,

yes. And, but not commando. That was going to be my next question. All right. We, we know

you were killed. Not commando. That's good. But you guys started out to be a cover band. And now

you're releasing your second album of original music. Tell us about the transformation from

cover band to writing your own music. Well, it's not necessarily a transformation. It's more of a

sort of getting back into where we feel comfortable. I mean, I actually toured the states back in 1980

with a cover band all up and down the East Coast based in Baltimore. And I used to do the kind of

stuff that we're doing now, you know, rock and roll by Led Zeppelin head out to the highway by

Judas Priest, things like that. So it was just natural for us to get back into the cover

thing. But we also all all come from a background of having done original music. And, you know,

I had my first recording contract at the age of like 23. And so it was, it was, it wasn't a

transition. It was just like, okay, let's start doing that again as well. Because we already had

a receptive audience. And so it was, it was pretty easy for us to say, hey, what do you think of

some of the stuff that we do as well? And so that's where that comes from. Like I say, it's not a

transition. It's just inviting the audience to, to, to, to get off on the stuff that we're doing

as well. And, but I wanted to say that I listened to your show a couple of weeks ago when you've

played still alive. And, and you both were talking about it, saying, you know, this is, it sounds

kind of 1980s. You guys are perfect. You know, exactly where we're coming from. It's deliberately

aimed at the sort of stuff that we grew up on. And so you guys had it perfect. You're right. What

you guys do is, is awesome. It's, it's, it's, oh, thank you. You do your homework. You think

about it. It's not just, here's a song. We then analyze it. We, we've picked you in the homework.

But no, you completely got it. You really, you, you, you nailed it. And, and that's what we're doing.

I mean, the still alive song is, is slightly different. The chorus is different in 1980s.

It's a big backing vocals and things like that. But I also tried to do that sort of, is it

imagine dragons, the sort of wrapping thing as well, just to bring it a little bit into the 2000s,

not too much into the 2000s. But anyway, we, we wanted to do something a little bit unique and

original. So that's why that one came from interesting. You know, when I first listened to

still alive, I mean, the first thing I thought of, especially with the chorus and a couple of

the bridge in there was kind of skid row. And, you know, from like the late 80s, early 90s,

skid row, Jim or Mike, why don't you two chime in on this and, and going back to the cover

band or doing covers to get the solution going. I would imagine it kind of gave you guys an

opportunity to gel together and give you time to write your original stuff, right? Yeah. And,

and I'll add that some people might think we're a little bit crazy because we're kind of still

our cover band. And we're also doing original music and a lot of people will say, well, are you a

cover band or are you original band? And some people will say, you can't do both. But that's kind

of what we're doing. We're we're we play covers to get gigs and, you know, paying gigs and such.

And that's what really kind of pays the bills and the the original stuff is just gravy on top.

Yeah. Perhaps someday you can make enough to pay your bills doing just the original stuff.

That's always the dream right rocker. It is, Jimmy. Now your debut album, how does it feel?

One of the mama's rock album of the year in 2022 and your new album still live just hit the

streets. Tell us about the new album. So we we kind of deliberately went for that still alive theme

because, you know, the last few years has been really strange, you know, but the the world's in

political unrest and I'm not going to go any further with that. You know, we had the COVID thing

because you've already heard that we guys got together at like 2018 and then 2019 was like a

seminal year for us. We were like going out there and playing all around Wisconsin. And then

COVID-19 hit and like would all stuck doing nothing. A huge challenge. And then we started

get back into it again and we did the the original record, the how do you how does it feel?

And then, you know, a couple of other things happened for us. We had a terrible tragedy. We were

playing the Harley Davidson sort of anniversary gig over on the east side of Madison and

unfortunately our light man collapsed, Dale Schultz collapsed and didn't make it. So we lost him

just over a year ago. It was like last week was the anniversary of that. And so there's all these

things that have been going on that have been really tough. But you know, we've been pushing through

that adversary. We've been pushing through. We've been trying to practice like outside at our guitarist

house, you know, just setting up in a field basically and making sure we don't pass germs to

each other. And we've still made it. And so we're still alive. And so the the the theme, the reason

we chose still alive was because it everyone goes through heartache and soul crushing experiences.

And that's what the first two stanzas of that is all about. You know, the soul goes out for a walk

and gets hit by a car the next time he gets stabbed in the back. But still thinks very positively

but then the last part is about how it's actually okay to struggle. It's actually okay to

be broken hearted or to be soul crushed. But then still go on anyway. So everyone that's kind of

the idea was that you know, we've been through all this but we are still alive. Still alive.

Well, we're doing it. Wow. Yeah. Beautiful. You know, you've done a lot and obviously you work

with some of the best people, including Paul Schluter at Megaton Studios for recording. What was

that recording studio and experience like for you guys? I hate to take everything, but I would say

that Paul Paul is just such a cool cat. I mean, he's been he's done the same stuff that we've done.

He's been in recording acts, you know, he had contracts way back in the 1980s and he's toured

extensively and we've we did the first track, the first album with him and developed a relationship

and as a producer, he gets the best out of us. So, you know, if I'm doing the vocals, he'll give me

ideas that I didn't think I'd ever have, you know, and when the guitarist is doing their thing,

he challenges them as well. And so we had an interesting situation with this album where because

the first one, we all got together and did the mix for the, you know, the final production.

And this time it's like, you know, Paul, you know what you're doing? Just go for it.

Yeah. You know, he's a very talented human being. I went out to see him and his band Fufu

dolls play last night at the Capitol Brewery. Great band. Yeah, they're fun. Paul, the vocalist introduced

him as said, like he's got the best rock star smile of anyone around. He's always there left.

He's a nice guy. So, yeah, Paul and Megaton, just brilliant. And, you know, we did the first one

in their place in Madison, just off the belt line there. And now he's moved to Mount Harub

and he's got an even bigger brand new studio out there. Yeah. I can't wait to get back in there.

I'll probably just go in there myself and do some stuff just to go hang out with the guy.

He's just awesome. That was one of the interesting things about changing,

changing locations with him was kind of a transition for us. We were halfway through the recording.

We ended up, you know, having to make them move out to Mount Harub. What a nice place that is.

It's just a fantastic spot. I'm looking forward to going out there and checking out. Now, you guys,

we're almost out of time here. So we got a bunch of shows coming up here. July 27th

at Pumfest in Stoughton. August 8th, you'll be at Boulevard Bike Night. That's kind of a staple for

you all. Oh, yeah. September 1st, you'll be at, uh, is it Busky's Big Horn and Big Flats,

Wisconsin? That's right. That's for our WFHR listeners up in Wisconsin Rapids. Yeah, very close to

Rapids. October 25th at Pauley's pub in eatery in West Dallas. That's just, you were just,

they're not too long go rocker. They're in Greenfield. That's right. Red Cross from Steve Fair Park.

What a great place. Pauley's is a great club. Uh, tell us real quick, uh, 30 seconds. What's

up with Pumfest in Stoughton and, uh, tell us about the, the fun times at Bike Night at Boulevard.

Oh Boulevard Bike Nights is just, uh, like you said, it's a staple. It's great fun. It's outside.

There's a lot of fun people there. We always have a blast there. Do you want to add anything, Jim?

It's, it's a, it's a great event for a larger crowd for the Madison area. So it's a,

it's a good opportunity to play there. And what's Pupfest? Well, uh, I haven't heard of it yet.

That's a big that booked us. And, um, I gather there's lots of beat and everyone in the area has

an opportunity to show us what they're doing as terms of their craft brewery ship. I bet, uh,

there's probably some food trucks there somewhere. They're probably delicious. The solution live

Yeah, let's talk about the convergence at Atwood Fest

because this is probably one of the most unique ways

and energetic ways to kick off the East Side Music Festival

at Atwood Fest.

That's right. The festival kicks off at noon

on Saturday, July 27th.

But at about 11 o'clock,

convergence starts.

And it starts at four different points

around the Atwood neighborhood.

And it's a parade.

So the hand fibions lead four different groups

on a parade through the neighborhoods,

banging pots and pans and drums

and making lots of noise

and wearing costumes.

And they all converge.

All four parades converge

at the Luther Allison stage

for a performance by the hand fibions

that will lead into a performance

right at the Luther Allison stage

of panchromatic steel,

a piece steel drum band,

which we had here in the studio.

I think it's going to be just a fabulous performance.

It's going to be percussion heavy.

That's for sure.

Yes.

And it's going to be cool.

It was a, it's a Cuban, um,

Latin dance band.

And it's really great.

And the sky's scarred getting gray.

And we had brought our bikes down to bike from the union.

And we left a little early.

And I'm glad we did because we got in just in time.

We got our bikes inside too.

So yeah, worked out.

Now Jimmy's been talking all night about food trucks.

Yeah.

And do you have any food trucks?

Oh, yes. So we do.

Yeah. So we each show.

We have two food trucks for like main dinner.

And then we also have an ice cream truck.

And usually a popcorn stand.

It just depends on the night.

Oh, that's at Wednesday night live.

You're talking about.

Oh, yeah. Oh, sorry.

Yeah. At Wednesday live, we have food trucks.

Yeah. That's where I was thinking.

I didn't even think about ice cream.

I mean, ice cream would be the perfect traveling.

I mean, ice cream ice cream.

Yes, there's no, there's no like music or little bells, right?

We can't compete with that.

So there is an ice cream truck.

Well, Mandy, tell us about the history of Wednesday night

live in Monhorab.

And how did it start?

And how did you get involved?

Yeah. So in 1998, Sage Lewis was an art teacher

at the Intermediate Center in Monhorab.

And she was doing a project with her students.

And she had gone to...

I can't remember exactly where she went.

It's in South America.

And she went to the carnival.

And she loved it so much.

She wanted to bring it back to Monhorab.

So she decided with her art students to do a project

to make a carnival in Monhorab.

So they came up with a festival idea.

In the art department, they came up with all these costumes to have a party.

And she, with her band, played and they raised money.

They sold tickets and raised like $3,000 for something that she donated

to the Optimus Club to start an actual event within Monhorab

and to keep it going.

She had since moved out of town.

And the Optimus Club took the money that she had raised

and decided to establish Wednesday night live.

And they first started with...

I think it was two shows.

And then they built over time to four shows.

And then they built up to six shows.

And that's where it is today.

So it is still up and going.

It's very much alive and well.

Sage is now in Arizona.

And she came back to our 25th anniversary show a few years ago.

And she's planning to come back on July 24th

to have a homecoming in Monhorab and come to the show.

It's a Rio de Janeiro where a carnival happens every year.

I think.

There are several countries that have it.

And I'm unfortunately I'm forgetting exactly which country she went to.

I don't think it was...

I can't remember.

But it was down in Central America.

And that's right around the time of...

of Marty Graugh in that late summer spring.

Something like that.

Yeah, usually I think it's like in February March.

And we brought that back.

And she was bringing the carnival back to Monhorab

and to bring the spirit of the carnival back.

And you know, it's alive and well.

I think it's to exercise the demons and the heathenism

in ourselves before lunch or something like that.

Right.

Well Wednesday night live, it kicked off last week.

And what can we expect to see there?

I mean, do we need to bring our own lawn chairs

as a BIO food and beer?

Tell us about Wednesday night live the facility.

Yeah.

We have our community park.

Rundle Park is a very large park.

And we have a beautiful Jeff Coast stage

that stays up your round.

And it is all lawn seating.

You bring your own lawn chairs, blankets.

You can bring a picnic if you want.

But we do have food trucks.

Who is playing Wednesday night live and when?

So the season kicked off already this week on the 10th.

On this past Wednesday, we had Generation Jones band.

Oh, my gosh.

They're a newer band.

They've only been around about a year.

They're like a superstar band.

They're an all-star lineup.

And yeah, I've just blown away.

And when I found out about them, I actually booked them

last year before the season was even over.

Because I wanted them so badly for this year.

Wow.

So yeah, they were a pretty incredible.

It was a wonderful show.

Everybody fell in love with them.

They did all the classic songs.

It was really fun.

So that was this past Wednesday.

And then July 17th, next week, we have Rare Element,

which is a Funkin Blues band.

They have quite a massive energy that they're going to bring.

They're a seven-piece band with a three-piece horn section.

So I think that's going to...

If we had a roof, it'd blow off the stage.

The more horns, the better.

I agree.

And Joey B. Banks, as a side note, is playing for Rare Element.

And Todd Fips.

Local.

I always say it's kind of a personal goal of mine

with Wednesday at Live that I'm trying to see how many

consecutive years I can book a band that Todd Fips is in.

And I'm on four right now.

Wow.

And I don't even know how many bands he's in.

Well, we just mentioned the Hammond organ that we had to move

from stage to stage.

Yep. So July 24th, we have Choronga Agosa,

which is a Cuban dance band.

Latin American dance band.

So we had a Latin band last year, and that was a huge hit.

People loved it.

People were dancing from the second song.

It gets people moving.

Like Mount Horib.

People start dancing like second set.

Sun's going down.

No, they were like second song.

Everybody was out on the dance floor.

And it was so much fun.

And of course, Beth Kiley coming in too, right?

On July 31st.

She'll be there.

She is a local favorite of everyone.

She is Americana Rock.

And we're really excited about that.

I love the trolls.

And you know, there's a real budding undercurrent of music happening.

And there are big music community.

That's happening there.

We have a lot of great opportunities to see local music.

You know, Wednesday live has been around for 27 years.

But in the last five years, we started having more and more like

we were talking about the megaton studios that just opened in the last few months.

Hearthouse guitars.

We have a guitar shop there now.

Yes.

We have bricks which does open mic on Thursday nights.

They also book bands on the weekends.

The doghouse has bands as well.

We just found out about a country music fair that's coming next July in Mounthorab.

Oh, fun.

And I know two of the bands that they have booked already.

But they're still making arrangements for it.

But they're going to have a country festival next year.

I heard burning troll is coming to my room.

Burning troll.

Well, I went to that last year.

That was so fun.

It was in September.

Wow.

And it was cool.

It was out at the bricks' owner lives out in a farm.

And they have a lot of acreage.

And they had three stages with music.

Wow.

It was so cool.

And it was, you know, people were camping.

You could camp there.

You could get a shuttle in from bricks.

So you didn't have to park as parking was pretty limited.

They had some food trucks.

Speaking of food trucks.

Yeah.

And they had some really interesting aerial dancers,

which was just awesome.

And then the burning troll was like this ceremonial event

where they had this drum line leading up to where Matt,

who is the owner of bricks, built this wooden troll.

And I don't know how tall it was, probably 20 feet.

Oh, wow.

It was huge.

And it was incredible.

I mean, the craftsmanship he put into that thing.

And the night before, we had a huge storm.

And I, they thought it was like toast.

It was just going to be demolished.

And it survived.

And they had to cover it up the best they could.

So it wouldn't get wet.

I guess they wanted to burn it.

And it actually worked out really well.

They set it on fire.

And they had this drum line playing.

And they had the aerial dancers with stilts.

And I mean, it was really a, it was a scene.

Do they rebuild the troll every year for that?

Well, last year was the first year that was like the inaugural event.

And I, you know, I remember asking them afterwards

that they were going to do it again.

And they said too soon.

We don't know.

It was just so much.

I can't imagine building something cool like that.

And then purposely burning it.

Yeah.

It was kind of weird.

Yeah, I think it was some, there's some symbolism there, right?

Sure.

I think there was a lot of, it was more of a ceremonial.

Yeah.

So I appreciate it.

And so they are going to do it again.

They had to get permits and whatnot.

And they decided to do it again.

They'll have more music.

I don't know any details about it yet.

And he'll probably, if I know Matt,

he probably will build something similar, but different.

Because it's a different year.

And it'll be something equally as awesome and magnitude

to start on fire, which fires my element.

So I, you know, if there's fire, count me in.

Can you tell me what it's about?

A lot of these songs were written during the pandemic.

The song is literally about some of the harmful impact I've noticed that I can have on people without even meaning to.

So that song is kind of making peace with that side of myself and just trying to better human going forward.

That's a fascinating description after listening to the song.

You can think so many different things.

That's my favorite part is once you release it.

It's not mine anymore, right?

Right.

This is your fourth album and you are on tour now.

This includes three stops in Wisconsin.

You've got Appleton on July 18th, Sun Prairie, July 19th, and then Milwaukee, July 20th.

Have you been to Wisconsin before?

Yeah, yeah.

We started playing out there about seven years ago.

You are actually traveling from Georgia, South up to Canada.

Yeah, we like to get around before COVID.

We used to travel quite a bit.

So I don't know.

We kind of had a wide swath.

So this is actually a shrinking down a little bit.

Believe it or not.

You're based in Boston.

Does the city have any kind of influence on you as a musician?

Band-aim kind of comes from that originally that feeling of...

We grew up kind of right in the suburbs of Boston.

So it was like 10 miles out, but might as well be like 300 miles away at the same time sometimes.

We always felt like a connection and a disconnect at the same time if that makes sense.

I love Boston.

I feel like one I've traveled more.

It's really kind of cool to come back home.

There's things that I didn't realize that are so unique and awesome about this place.

Are you a two or three piece on tour right now?

We are kind of doing a little bit of a mix of things.

Usually a four piece, but we drop down to a two piece post-COVID.

Two of us wanted to get back to touring and we've kind of reworked our set as a duo

and have had an absolute blasting that.

But the fun thing about that is have a lot of guest musicians and friends sitting with us.

So our set tends to be different depending on where you catch us.

Which I think is kind of some of the excitement.

I am amazed that as a band you can go from being a four piece to being a three.

I guess that's talent.

It is a challenge.

It's fun though.

Doing a duo is a lot harder than I expected.

We had to change a lot of the way that we approach the songs.

We now kind of just view it as like this is our song book.

We can kind of do this any way we want to do it.

And that is made it more fun.

I think approaching the songs in different ways every night has been a really fun challenge for us.

Do you still pull from your old albums too?

We do.

Andy, the drummer and I, we can, well, he's much more than a drummer at this point.

He plays keyboards.

He sings.

So I always say he looks like he's doing a stupid human trick on stage.

It's pretty great.

We can do pretty much all the material this way.

There's a couple of things that don't sound as they do on some of the older records.

But that's even kind of fun to us too is just revisiting it.

Some songs are fun to play that we kind of got bored of over time.

And it's like, well, there's a weird way to do it now.

Give it a little new life.

Exactly.

Yeah.

You also quit your job as a music teacher.

Is this true?

That is correct.

Yeah.

I am still a music teacher again, but I work for myself now.

I run a private practice now, which is very fun.

Very, very rewarding for me.

Actually, I have like a lot of young students right now.

Like I'm forming a bill with all my eight-year-old students that I'm super excited about.

I used to be a public school teacher and I have the hardest time fitting into.

Sometimes, like, art has a hard time placing rules around it to me.

I had a hard time with some of the stuff seemed a little silly to me.

I'm glad you're still sharing your talent, though.

And it sounds like it's much more fun the way you're doing it.

Yeah, yeah.

It's a lot more fun.

I can do stuff that I believe in, like 100%.

Yeah, it's great.

I feel being a private teacher.

I feel like I can develop more of a relationship with people, like well,

in a public school setting.

It's a little bit more of like, all right, I don't want to cross boundaries.

But this way I can get a lot closer to the families, the parents, everything.

Like it's really, it's wonderful.

I was like, I feel like I never get to be silly in this band.

And I just, I have a deeply silly side of my personality.

And yeah, I just thought like sometimes writing about yourself is so ridiculous.

And I just, I wanted to see if that caught anyone's eye.

I have three cats that I wish could come with me.
