released a live album called circuit breakers. And this alternative blues rock band fuses
old school with the new times here in the studio to perform live in the layer is rogue
electric. Guys, welcome to Maxing radio. Happy to be here, guys. Happy to have you. How
was your exploration of state street during monsoon weather here in Madison? Oh, we had
a good time. We went out and we were going to watch some shows down at the terrace and then
we saw the storm coming in. So we ran back over here before it blew us out. But yeah,
it was good. We got a Madison expert here in the band. Our other guitar player Kyle
Starr. He went here. So he he showed us around today. We had a good time out here for
job, Carl. And I already you right into Katner Hurricane. Yeah, we saw them. They did not
start playing and then we left. Yeah. But yes, we were down there to check out the terrace
and Kyle. He's he's played on that stage and scene shows on that stage. So he he was
showing us around. I'm sure your trip to the terrace makes you want to say, Hey, I want
to play the terrace. Yeah. Yeah. That's exactly what we came out of it. Yeah. That is it's
one of my favorite places to play in the world. No better place than the memorial union
terrace. The rogue electrics. We are speaking with vocalist Kyle Rogan. Kyle, the band is
inspired by your family's electrician business. Rogan electric. Tell us the story behind
the band name. Yeah. So my dad, my grandpa, they were electricians. I did not learn my family
trade. So, you know, my grandpa started his own electrician business after he worked
for P&H, a classic Milwaukee company for many years. He became an electrician. He taught
my dad's and my uncle's how to do it. And they like could wire up a whole house like they
wired up our house of bill. I didn't get that. Like I didn't follow in those footsteps. But like,
to me, my dad showed me a lot of rock music. And that was my way that I could kind of carry on
the family legacy. So the name came from. So our name is actually pronounced Rogan. So it's like
rogue. So I got rogue electrics like rogue on electrics. But it's the rogue electrics is the
band name. So what was your dad's reaction when he found out that's that's the name of the band?
Oh, they thought it was really cool because we actually took how I came up with our logo is I
took a picture of the jackets they used to wear on the job. So like it had this like old school
kind of calligraphy font that said Rogan electric. I took that to our friend Monica who does our
graphics. And I said, can you make the rogue electrics with this font? So if you see our logo,
it's actually based on the font that was on those electrician jackets. You're not an electrician,
but you play an electric guitar. Right. So there's the parallel. Right. And that's where it came from.
I was like, this is going to work. This will be a cool thing. You know, it works out perfectly.
You know, we'll get to know about your bands in just a couple of your bandmates and just a
couple of minutes, but tell us about the band itself, the journey of the band to this point. What
have you guys been through to get where you are today? I mean, we've been through a lot to be honest.
I started this way back in probably 2016. We started rehearsing with some people and none of
those people are here now, you know, everyone kind of that was in the band had to leave for their
own reasons. But I think we really with this new lineup we added, you know, Nick, Kyle and Mike
really brought this thing to another level. Like I don't think we'd be here talking to you
necessarily. We kind of just started out doing it for fun. But then we started to get more
serious. We wanted to make records. So we were writing all these original songs and I was like,
well, yeah, like let's try to build a catalog of music and see what happens and
make a record to kind of figure out who we are. And that was our first album and Kyle Stair
helped produce it. And our guitar player at the time left and he jumped into the band from there.
And then we started getting these other guys in, you know, as members had to leave for
different life reasons, you know, everyone that was in wanted to be in there. But
so you were the only constant. Yes. I have been the one from the beginning. But these guys,
I mean, Nick's been around since our first album release. He came in to replace our bass player
that left. So, you know, it'll be interesting to hear him kind of talk about his upbringing and
what he thought was cool about the band and one of the songs that we played tonight. I remember
him saying, I heard that song and that's what made me want to be in the band. So it was good. And
then Mike, we played a lot of gigs with his previous band, the Zimmer effect in the Milwaukee scene.
So when our longtime drummer Adam left to go to the army, he was just a perfect fill in the timing
worked out. And he's been great to kind of drive home our live show. As far as songwriting,
are you are you doing all the songwriting then? And then do you present something to the band?
It used to be that way. But it's really evolving now. Like in rehearsal, like the past couple
months, we've been trying to write more together. So we're going to play two songs tonight that
we've basically come up with all together. Everyone has written parts for it. And in the past,
that wasn't the case. So it's awesome to kind of write with these guys because they have a lot of
good ideas and they make my ideas better. It's a collaboration. But let's get to live music in the

have for us tonight is called Carry Your Weight. Is this a song about being dragged down by the stone?
I wouldn't think so. I would say it's more about like working hard for other people. And like,
you know, seeing, seeing what it's like when people don't want to pull their weight. And,
you know, as a band, you got to work hard together to come up with something that's kind
of bigger than just an individual person. So it was me kind of trying to be like, okay, like,
we got to work together. You know, sometimes we're going to have to put a weight on our back and
and carry it. And that's how it is when you're kind of doing an original music in a place where
it's hard to do it. And, you know, it came from that. And as a parent now, I kind of think of that
with my daughter. It's like, you know, carry me, dad. It's like, yes, like I'm going to, I'm going to
carry you. I'm not going to say no to this. You know, there, there are people who will. But
I'm going to help you. I'm going to carry you if I need to, even if it's hard work for me.

All right, Jimmy, we are here with Kyle Rogan, and let's get to know the band a little bit
Let's start with Kyle, a singer and multi-instrumentalist, what is your backstory?
How did you become involved with music?
Yeah, I think the biggest thing for me is I had a lot of influences in my family and friends that inspired me to do it
And I think the biggest thing was on top of those influences, I always felt like I was different in school
People would be like, this is what's popular, this is the music I'm listening to
And I never really identified with that at all
And what I identified more with was like my dad's records and my friends' dad's records
And my cousin who was into all this rock stuff and they would give me this music
And I would just absorb it like a sponge
Who are some of the bands?
I mean, I can almost gasp, please tell me
Oh, I mean, anything, my dad took me to Ted Nugent when I was two
Okay
So it started out with that, I don't remember it, but it did happen
I did get him to confirm it last week as I've been telling the story
But he planted that seed early, and I mean, he used to have the sticks cassette in our van
Driving our family around, so we listened to Come Sail Away, Blue Color Man, Pieces of Eight
That stuff, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Petty, you know, Deep Purple, all that kind of stuff
They would have, and we'd listen to that, and I was like, ACDC, you know
All the kind of hard blues rock stuff is what my dad and my friends' dad listened to
And they just, like, oh, you're into this, and they just started
You know, spoon feeding me in
Personally, I'm not a musician, but you know, this particular friend who used to go visit all the time
They had this great vinyl collection, you know, I found the Zeppelin, the Hendrix, the Joplin, Neil Young
I was looked for life, you know
Yup, and I had that experience, and that's what kind of made me want to do it
Is like, I'm different, this is what I like, I want to do something with this
And especially at that age, experiencing something like that rocker on vinyl
Watching it go around and making the noise
That's why, that's my love for vinyl right there
Do you mean those vinyl? Were your parents musicians at all?
My mom played piano a little bit
Like she could sight-read music, like, play classical pieces
Like I remember as a kid, she got this piano that I have in my studio now
Like an ADA key, and she would put the music up, and she could play like, you know, a classical piece
So she put me in piano lessons, if it weren't for that
I wouldn't have been able to do this, so I'm very grateful to her for doing that
At the time, I didn't want to do it, I was like, you know, in third grade
I wasn't into music at that time, but when I did get into music
I did it long enough that I had the skills to at least start trying
Did you participate like band, band choir, and you like that in school?
Yeah, I played trombone
I did that, we got another former trombone player here, Nick played trombone too
So yeah, we played in the band a little bit, but yeah, when I was in the band in high school
I wasn't really into it, I wanted to do more of the rock band thing
But I did it, and I learned, and I played, you know, I had a trombone to take some lessons
Any ideas about maybe inserting some brass into the rogue electrics?
I mean, if the song calls for it
Nope, nope, we won't do it

I don't know, we can be friends anymore
We used to have a sax player, my buddy played sax
And that was cool, like that worked for like kind of the 70s vibe that we had
So I wouldn't hate sax on a song here there, but yeah, it depends
I mean, I used to play the guy who played sax, it was a good time
And his dad was one of the ones spoon feeding me the music
Well now you play guitar, and you also play keyboards in this band, and you play trombone
What else do you play?
Nothing really
That's it, we got the list
I mean, I have stuff that I mess around with, but no, like the most proficient I am is on like the blues keyboard
organ leads and doing the rhythm guitar singing thing
So that's my main thing, but it's still like
We don't have the keys here tonight, but when we play our full live show
I got keys up there, I'm doing guitar, I'm singing
It's a lot to do on stage at one time, it's very like Getty Lee
But it's a challenge every night to play, because it keeps you going
You're jumping around
Loading and tarot must be a pain
Yeah, I have a lot of stuff
You basically loaded now for two positions, you know
Not the usual lead singer
The road, the road electric is on a mission to create a catalog of music
And your debut album Between Black and White relates to the formative years of the band
And the album became a symbol for adversity and perseverance
Talk about that
Yeah, so I kind of mentioned it earlier how we like basically turned over the whole band during that process
But that album was really us figuring out what our influences are and who we wanted to be
We tried a lot of different stuff on that album, we did like some alt rocks, some 70s rocks, some, you know
More laid back, ballad-y stuff
So like we were really trying to figure out what kind of stuff we wanted to do
We kind of started getting more excited about the heavy blues rock stuff going in that direction
So that helped us formulate our sound
But a lot of the guys, either life-wise, couldn't commit to doing the full record
Or, you know, had some things change in their life where they had to leave
So, you know, the band had to kind of turn itself over
And Kyle Stair was going to produce it, he wasn't in the band at that time
But our guitar player left and he was there and like, Kyle
I know you know what to do, pick that guitar up, let's go
And Nick came in and Mike eventually, so yeah, it was a process where we had to figure ourselves out
And, you know, move forward to something better

I think it's more finding solutions
I try to be pretty positive in my songwriting

But like for me, it's like, okay, like people are struggling at times
Like, how can we lift each other up and do something good to not forget that
And try to move forward and be better and enjoy life more

Tell us your backstory, how did you get involved in music?
Oh, I suppose I've pretty much always been surrounded by it
As far as I understand, my parents more or less met
Working at the same record store in Walkie Show
Was you probably familiar with mainstream?
Oh, yes, of course
And my dad was in bands when I was young
So I would tag along with him to band practice and stuff
So I was always drawn to guitar sounds
Like songs would pull me in based on the sound of the guitar
You know, more so than anything else
I suppose it was just kind of an inevitability that I'd come to this place
I would imagine you also have a big classic rock background in the type of music
I mean, just with the way you do your guitar solo, play guitar
It has that classic rock feel to it, you know?
I suppose I think I lean into it with this group
I think that's what fits, but I think my background was, in terms of lead guitar playing
Was written in blues, really

I was a big Steve Ray Von guy, you know, Jimmy Hendrix has stuff
So I mean, there's definitely overlap with classic rock
Sure

It sounds good, what do you do as a record producer?
I mean, do you work for other bands just yourself?
I mean
It's not something I do for a living or anything, I mean, it's just kind of like a hobby I've gotten into
So, I mean, I've been recording for, you know, a long time
But I think my first recording device was a four track cassette, you know, like one of the cast cam

No, but I did see that sign
At a gas station when I wrote this song like on a really long car trip on the way back from Canada fishing trip with my family
And I must have saw that at a sign like on one of the gas stations
It wasn't inspired by it, but the title was in my head
Actually, it kind of comes from the Free Air line comes from Lord of the Rings
Where Gandalf is like, breathe the Free Air again, so that's where the idea comes from
But then I saw it on a gas station sign, I was like, okay, I got to write this song
Because it's kind of about like connecting with nature, getting away from technology
Because I work with technology a lot for my job
And I like my job, I'm good at it
But it's really hard to start a screen all day for eight hours
Sometimes you need to connect with nature and get out there and experience the majesty of the world
So that's kind of what this was, it's kind of like an escape kind of rock song
So yes and no on the gas station thing, but it is there a little bit

What is your backstory? I mean, how did you become involved in music?
Sure rocker, you know, first off, thanks for bringing us out here tonight
Really appreciate you guys having us, it's been an honor to play here

My background of music, I got forced into it, 100%
Yeah, no choice
My choices were trumpeter trombone when you're in fifth grade
Oh nice
So, took trombone, fellow trombones here on our singing side
Mr. Kyle there
Yeah, learned that, grew up in marching band
Learned that, learned euphonium
Got into playing bass in college, guitar
Quickly learned that there's always a better guitar player than you
So I switched to four, you know, four strings
Yeah
Made it much easier, simpler to find gigs, played in a couple bands back in Michigan before I moved to Wisconsin
And I joined these guys basically two days after I moved here
And it's been pretty good ever since
Wow, two days, like two days
Was it like that or would they have an out or what?
Craigslist, I was like, all right, got to get an apartment, got to find a band
Is that an order?
Absolutely
Nice, then like where's the nearest liquor store beer
Wow, so your parents, I'm assuming they're the ones who forced to
Yes, so my mom was always a very big marching band person
Yes, she learned trumpet, flute, top, best in everything, top chair
Yeah, you got to be the same
So, it was made it easy to transition
You know, grew up in a house with lots of music
Her bell pertin to T1 of brass, she had a couple of those sticking around

Well, let's get Kyle back up here because you know, we want to talk about
Just last night, June 21st, the Royal Electrics
Release their latest album, Circuit Breakers, and it's all recorded live
Tell us about the new album and there's kind of a concept behind it
Right, like how did you do this all live?
So we had to, we've kind of out of necessity
Had to do our own sound at a lot of gigs
And like coming out of the strangers kind of run
Of doing the shows for that
We got this mixer where we could route everything
Do a computer and record it
So anything you hear on this record was played at a show
And there's no edits, we didn't go back and like overdub something
You know, it's like
These are some of our favorite performances over the last couple of years
That we did live playing in Wisconsin all across the state
You know, wherever we could
And we're really proud of it because we don't really haven't really seen any band do
Like a full-length live album of stuff they've recorded at shows
And these guys, like it really made us a better band
Because we would listen to the recording from every show afterwards and be like
We weren't very good that gig and then other guys were like
We were really good that gig
And then we got like once we started getting a couple takes
A stuff that was like sounding really good
We're like, okay, we think we can do it
But we got to get these five songs better
And let's nail them and get better at performing
And this whole thing made us such a better band
Because it's some of the shows
We tripped the circuits
And we had too much gear
And they're power tripped
And we had to figure out how to make our stuff work
And we still could play really good
And you know, work on our craft
We've been playing Song's Office Circuit Breaker on Maxing Crudio for a couple weeks
Every since he sent me the album
That's awesome

So I mean, I'm pretty involved musically
in the walk area
What was your parents role in your musical upbringing?
Pretty much mainly just supportive
My family was very, very okay with me
borrowing the high school's drum set for a summer
And that was cool
So I pretty much hit the ground running
As soon as I could hit things with sticks
I pretty much knew I was going to be a drummer
So yeah
You ever sing and drum too?
Yeah, sure
That's hard, I don't know how people could do that
I need to
I sort of compartmentalize it
And I need to focus on one or the other
I can't do both really well
So I need to decide
Okay, if I'm singing lead vocals
I should really do that really well
And then drum more basic
Just get the job done
But I don't think I'm quite good enough to do both
Good at the same time
I need to focus
