Jimmy Clyde Stubblefield always said the parties in the kitchen and he meant it.

Singer, songwriter Tay was born and raised in Green Bay and has been performing as one woman

show since 2012, but after taking up residence in the multi-story flat, Tay's love of baking

cakes became a neighborly passion when a couple of sugar became the catalyst for a new project,

and some new roommates. Tay and the neighborly is performing tonight at Popfest at the

Majestic Theater in Madison, and the band took a quick break to come and talk with us tonight.

Tay and the neighborly, welcome to Maxine Gradyo. Howdy, howdy, howdy.

Tay, you know, how's the drive here because you guys came from the valley, is it?

Yeah, it was pretty gnarly on the way here. I mean, most of our ride is a

back roads and then we luckily can get on the freeway and it is salted by then, but it was definitely

a, you know, the light snow flying across and icy. Wow, the valley, the Fox Valley.

No, the Fox Valley, of course, okay. We just, we just called the valley for short, Jimmy.

Sticking where we're in, so like Southern California.

Tay, how does a couple of sugar from the neighbors become a cake, flatmates, and a band?

Carefully.

Please elicit. There's a good story behind this, right?

There is a good story behind this and I would love to tell you.

I'm Daniel. I play keys and Tay and the neighborly and what you just said as our bio is a complete lie.

There was a show we played. I was forget when exactly this was. I think it was in 2020.

Maybe 2021. It was, it was one of the first shows that I played with the band and it was a small town

high school auditorium show. It, it felt like, you know, the kind of show you play and then you

move on with your life and they asked us for a bio and just because we had really just started

playing as the group that has become Tay and the neighborly, we didn't have a bio. And

you know, saying, oh, well, we all met because we are networking music professionals and we all knew

each other. No one cares about that. You need a little icing to get there. We need a little

yes, a little, a little icing on the cake. So we came up with this story that we thought was

the most laughably fake story we'd ever heard in our whole life and just sent it just

to be printed in this like they like to print a brochure for their shows that they have. We thought

it was just that and after we played the show, we thought that was that like we didn't know they

put it on the internet. We thought it was literally just for a who's playing our show through its

own legs and somehow made it onto the internet and everybody at our next shows started bringing it up

and some people even like had never heard our music and seen our bio and they'd come to our

shows asking us about it. So it's just kind of so it's true. So I'm sure you get asked this at

all your shows. What is your favorite cake? Yes. Oh boy. I like a classic chocolate. Chocolate is

good. Yeah. I'm a big clear sapphire fan myself. Anything that is from dessert person is a cake

that I'll say is my favorite cake and I feel like if you know quite a set that's you know

everyone of her cakes is her own favorite cake. So I feel like I'm allowed to say all of her cakes

are also my own favorite cake. What is the drummer or what is I'm sorry. Oh hey. Yeah. How many

do you have to play the drums? Andy. What kind of cake do you like that? Cheesecake? Wisconsin,

you know. Yeah. Cheesecake is good. I like a good marble cake. Yeah. Marbles good. For sure. Yeah.

Yeah. Now tonight, Tane the Neighborly is performing at Popfest over at the Majestic Theater with

the Astronomers and Captain Hurricane. It's been a journey to get here today. What are you looking

forward to at tonight's show? This will be our first time playing at the Majestic and so we're

super stoked about it. It's also our first time being on a roster with the astronomers and I've

heard great things about them and have you know, we've listened to their music in the car. We did

a show that we were on the same festival lineup with a cat in the hurricane. So we know they're great.

Oh yeah. Friends of the show. We love cat in the hurricane here. You guys will be back in

Madison at the Red Rooster on Friday, January 26th. The Red Rooster is a cosier venue than a large

theater like the Majestic and every band wants to play the biggest stages but playing to an audience

right in front of you is special too. What can we expect from Tane and the neighborly at the Rooster?

They got the best flock machine in town. They really they really know how to I think it's like

they know how to do it in there. Yeah. No, I mean, every band loves playing big, huge stages. Yeah.

It's totally true, but we love playing small places too. I know we've all been playing music for

a long time and there's definitely magic in playing a small room when it's packed and you get to

let the songs sort of stretch out and you get to let the solo sections go. Let the jam sections go.

I don't know if we're necessarily quite a jam band, but we we like to get into it when

we get it's good and the Red Rooster is the perfect kind of place to let that happen.

You know, it's very intimate. You can get to know the people that are coming to your show and

kind of interact with them both often on stage. And as a fan, those small venues are a lot of fun

to watch a show, you know. Small venues are totally fun. I mean, big venues are great, but small venues

when it's all right there. That's a wonderful feeling. Absolutely. Tane and the neighborly live in

the studio with us here on Maxine Gradle. They're playing pop fest tonight just down the road at the

majestic theater. Love the pop. Love the fest season here in Madison that the majestic throws

on. It's really cool. You guys released your album that's currently out back in the summer of 2023.

How's it going? What's the feedback you've heard from from people? So we have actually only released

a few singles off of that album. I believe five singles now and we have a bunch more in store

that we're going to be releasing on that actual album. Obviously, you know, life gets in the way

and things get pushed back. But I think that it has become, you know, something better than it

ever has been or would have been. So we're projecting to have that released in April, May,

time digitally. And then we're going to do a pre-order campaign for vinyl and CDs and whatnot.

Vinyl. Yeah. Nice. Your music will sound great on the turntable, for sure.

Any plans to hop back in the studio to record any new music that's come since you've

relayed these tracks down? We actually already have recorded more music since the primary recording

of this album. So there's going to be more stuff on the way, for sure. Where do you record at?

It's been a mixture of this place called River Rock Studios. It's in Minneapolis with a guy

named Kevin Israel. He's great. We love it up there and he's a part of the family. We've also

done some of our own tracking at home. So that's also another path that we take saves little cash

the band bands person. Yeah, all you have to do is buy a recording studio to have it home.

Piece of cake. Yeah, offers a new creativity too. Now, speaking of Minneapolis,

Hayden and Napoli have another big show coming up on February 17th at the Cedar Cultural Center

in Minneapolis with Beneath Green. Tell us about this big show. Yeah, this will actually be our

very first time playing as Hayden and Napoli in Minneapolis and our first show with Beneath Green

as well. And we reached out to them because we thought that they were super funky and so it'll

be a great night. Minneapolis has a fun music scene up there. I still want to take a road trip to

Minneapolis rocker hang out for a night, do some shows, for some good things about it. Well,

you're all going to rock the majestic tonight, right? Yeah. Heck yeah. Yes. Little more enthusiasm

there, just in case. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All right, very good. Tay and the Napoli. They're playing

pop fest tonight here in Madison at the majestic, the astrometers and cat and hurricane,

heart playing. If people want to get your music, connect with you. How do we do that?

You can check out TayMusic.com and it has all that good stuff on it.

Excellent. We're going to play self-help. I like this song. Tell me about this song as we

before we go into it here. This tune was written from place where I feel like

people are very open to sharing their opinions of who they think other people should be and what

they think other people should do with their time and life. I know that as we are vulnerable humans,

it's a beautiful thing and it's also a flaw. We sometimes can mix up our own authentic selves inside

of what other people expect us to be. And so this song is about embracing and celebrating

yourself and trusting your dreams and your intuition. And there's a video for the song I'll

too, I believe, right? Is that right or is that wrong? Or is that fake news?

Like the bite? Did we release the video about that? I didn't. Did you? I don't know if I did.

I don't think I did. Do a video for the song. It's coming though. We have video in store that's

going to be released this summer for that. Thank you, Tay and the Napoli. You're awesome.

Appreciate your good music here. Let's hear it right now. Self-help. Tay and the Napoli on Maxing

on Civic Media. We are local music.
