That's right Jimmy and tonight in the Devil's Lair we have Jane Hopson and Jane Hopson is a
guitarist, singer and songwriter from Madison and grew up performing in musical theater with
their father and recently graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio. After releasing an album with
their college band Heart Candy and then releasing a solo album in 2020, Jane is home in the Mad
City and will release a brand new single this month and we get to premiere it tonight, yes.

Now for our listeners who may not be familiar, who is Jane Hopson? How did you get to this moment?
Who is Jane Hopson? I guess I'm a songwriter and a musician. I grew up in Madison as you said
and I went to Oberlin College which is like you know one of the small liberal arts colleges.
Where was I located? It's in Ohio it's like maybe 45 minutes from Cleveland but you know I
strive to define myself like every day as a musician but I guess I would say I'm kind of your
classic like Indie Girl singer kind of like emo yeah musician I don't know like hopefully not
quite as sad as like Phoebe Bridgers but like kind of maybe a Jason. Don't make us cry tonight
that would be a disaster if I started crying. We don't want to see Jimmy cry.
When we first met back in 2020 you were very passionate about politics and social justice and
especially gerrymandering. Where is your heart these days? I'm still definitely like pretty
politically involved but yeah I seem you're talking about back when I used to write for like my
college newspaper I would write a lot of political stories and in high school I worked on some
political campaigns and yeah I'm still I'm still definitely interested in democracy in the
future of our country and getting people to vote getting people my age to vote. You know
we're gonna plug into politics this for a second I was observing something you know the
Wisconsin partisan primary just happened on Tuesday. And over what is it the 63rd district
where Robin Voss narrowly won his primary the sad part about it there's no Democrat running against
him and the reason for that gerrymandering yeah well thanks for bringing us down Jimmy you're welcome
now we're gonna cry no we're not so let's get to some live music with Gene Hopson in the devil's

did Eliza call you back? It's actually funny so Eliza is one of my best friends from like from
my childhood and we were never romantically involved in a kind of this song was kind of written
as a joke but it's definitely got some like real emotions just not about her.

Jane you grew up performing musical theater with your father and tell us about those early
experiences and performing musical theater I mean like what is musical theater tell us about that
um so yeah when I was a kid I spent a lot of time doing theater in Madison musical theater
specifically is like how I started out I don't like really do a lot of musical theater anymore um
I did do plays like throughout college but never musicals but I guess like at a very young age
like the the whole broadway concept really like caught my interest and I was one of those theater
kids and that's actually how I got into like singing so I'm I'm grateful that I did but yeah I don't
know whether I'll be doing musicals in the future but I have a lot like I have a lot of love for
musical theater and my heart still I have to admit it what's the what's your favorite uh performance
that you've done in theater um it's a hard it's a hard question uh I I think that like one of my
go-to answers is probably a little shop of whores which is like I was at east high my senior year
and that was like the first musical we'd done there in like 20 30 years or something yeah and
it was it was pretty fun for me yeah so we we mentioned your father and tell us about your
father's experience in the music industry and how that did that play a role in yourself pursuing
music uh tell us about your dad and your parents obviously nobody uh ends up pursuing music
and their parents aren't totally behind them so tell us about you know your parents and your
dad's uh influence on you so my my dad he's actually like listening right now he of course is a
drummer and he was like you know like famously he was in this band killdozer this like old grunge
and I don't know if you guys have heard of that killdozer I think we were to killdozer this killdozer
have like the double double cover on maximum make one yeah maybe it did um yeah so my dad my dad
as a drummer still still as a drummer even though not with killdozer anymore um and yes I mean I
think especially when I started playing music and like writing songs specifically my dad was always
like very supportive of that and he wanted to jam with me and I think he he probably helped me a
lot with my rhythm you know um and my mom is actually a bit of a musician too like I don't
really she wants me to tell everyone that but she plays the piano and we do a family band every
year and she plays the accordion which I think which I think is pretty cool so mom can maybe get a
hold of uh brewmeister and she could join the uh polka hip hop scene in Milwaukee brimmer criminals
November criminals wow yeah I mean I don't think she ever would but I would love to
we'll have their people call her people how's that on it so you you're saying I think
your dad plays in your band yeah so he's played in some of my my bands I guess I like to call it my
like dad band which is like one of my my Madison groups um so it's it's my dad in a couple of his
like buddies um specifically Matt early and then this guy C.A. grooms who actually helps
record one of my albums but C.A. is not a father and it's unfair for me to like lump him into that
but yeah I've played a bunch with them and they're really great I did a show at the rig B last
month with them and another one at the bird oak um yeah so my dad is in many ways still
a help in my life and a great musical support now let's get back to some live music with

when does the video get released for the song and when will there be more songs or an album coming out
yeah so the song if you ask like both the track and the music video are going to be released on
august 19th so like this upcoming Friday the video the music video I spent a lot of time working
on it and it has like claymation in it and like stop motion oh wow yeah so I was taking this animation
class at Oberlin and that's like the idea I had um so that the video is it's it's its own project
honestly um and then in terms of like future music uh I have I have clearly I have some songs
written I don't have them recorded yet um and I'm hoping to do that in September with CA again
who uh who are you working with for the video who's doing the shooting the photography and all that
basically me um I mean the song because it was mostly like claymation and stuff like it was
mostly me doing the shooting but I had some friends help me out with like like out of friend who
like made like a dollhouse um which actually happened to have made already that I like used
for the claymation um and then there's like a few shots of like me playing guitar and singing
a little bit that obviously it did as well you know uh listening to your music tonight it's
obviously you love storytelling because your uh uh your music is a story uh which is really really
cool where where uh or who have you played with here in Madison other bands other artists that
you think you mesh well with out in the scene um my experience in Madison I haven't played like a
ton of gigs here uh but I I got to play with this band Sunline recently yeah I don't know if
you guys have heard of them they're like pretty new Sunline I have not heard them yeah new young band
and like I honestly don't really know exactly how to describe their music was kind of like funky
and jazzy and such um but then actually played when I played at the burrow I was um playing for
Jeff Burke Hart's album release um and I mean I think he's a really great artist

so um it's a band that i formed in college with a bunch of friends who like
sadly like we don't live anywhere near each other so the future of the band is looking like a
little dismal but we did record in ep like at the very beginning of the summer that we're still
planning to release uh hopefully by the end of the summer so like i think it's four songs um and
i think they're pretty good um and yeah i'm just playing with those guys for sure
wow uh now you are playing at Mickey's here in Madison in september um but we can also catch you
at the orton fest on august 27th tell us about playing Madison's oldest music festival
well it's it's really exciting um i grew up going to the orton park festival every year and
like watching the bands and seeing psychropian stuff so it's really cool to like get to do it myself
um yeah i'm like kind of nervous but i'm i'm very excited to do it and i have like a new group
who i'm playing with and they're like really wonderful musicians and we've been practicing
hopefully enough so so this will be a full band then yeah it's a full band
is that a first for you to have a full band no no no i mean my the the hobgoblins was like a
a full group and i also might have my dad band i've had i've had a few okay a few different groups
that i've cycled through um but yeah this is this is a newer group um but these guys are really
great musicians do you do i mean how can i so obviously you have the solo performances and then the
band performances what do you prefer well truthfully like i don't play solo very often this is like one
of probably the only times that i've like sat down to do a solo acoustic before like i normally do
have like at least another person up with me so you're hearing the most like stripped down versions of
these songs yeah now who is who is going to be in the band that we're going to see at Orden Park
and and what time are you playing there so we're playing at one 15 on saturday um so yeah if you're
there early afternoon please come see me um and i'm playing with Pat Granson on drums
James Strelo on the guitar and i think he's also going to play some pedal steel um and then
Ivan and i'm totally blanking on his last name is playing the bass um he's a great bassist

lisa before you play so this song is inspired by a horrible nightmare that i had recently um
about a friend like in the in the nightmare like one of my close friends like died after i made
like a horrible joke and like i really took it as my fault so like this is her name is not lisa
that was her name happens to rhyme with lisa but i'm not going to say it um so this song is kind
of inspired by that particular nightmare and it's kind of like a folk song it's my attempt to kind
