this all means, Jimmy, but we can ask the pine travelers right now because tonight they are
live in the devil's layer. Nick and the pine travelers crew. Welcome to the devil's layer on
Maxincradio. Thanks so much. Hi there. Thanks for having us. That was Nick and Alex. You guys are
the two singers in the room right now. And Nick, 200 of 236 of my friends, like you guys on Facebook,
but for our listeners who aren't familiar with who the pine travelers are, do you guys sing about
trees? Not as much about trees. More about traveling. Maybe some smoking of tree here and there.
Yes. Hey, we can be friends now. That's awesome. Yeah, mainly traveling songs. I don't know.
There might be a tree in there once in a while. So tell me about the pine travelers. What's your backstory?
Well, we Nick and I formed a group with my brother Keith about six years ago. We were calling it
double dubs. And then he left. We had a lineup change and came up with the name Pine travelers.
This kind of a tribute to like the upper Midwest where we're from. We tour a decent amount.
So yeah, pine travelers. And we wanted it to like, we wanted it to convey the upper Midwest roots
and also a little bit of our Americana edge. But we like to think we have a diverse array of styles
in our sound too. Pine travelers put a lot of stuff on hold during the pandemic. What do you miss
the most about the music scene over the last year? And how excited are you get back to be
get back to playing live music again? Like right here in the devil's layer? Oh, I mean, this is
Nick. We miss it so much. We did a lot of streams, which are awesome. We started out kind of low
five, just doing on our own and then kind of led up to we did a big show at the Barrymore,
which was really, really fun. Yeah, our friends lucid streams with that all together.
Have you definitely wasn't the same without anyone there? And yeah, we really miss it. We miss
playing people, seeing people's faces and can't wait to get back out of the summer. Yeah,
we got to give lucid streams a shout out because they've been doing the stream, the live streams
within the Barrymore theater, which have been fantastic. That's Burby, right? Burby, yeah,
Burby and crew. We had such a good time. Mark Norman, big production crew down there. Yeah.
There's an honor to play there for sure. I've gone to so many shows that Barrymore all of us have
really cool to play in that stage. Have you guys found that you've you've been on this kind of
like technological advancement evolution since the lockdown started? Definitely. Yeah, we've been
trying our best. Definitely novices to the streaming thing and yeah, we're working with our own
production company called Stream Teams now, which will be doing a lot of our shows in the future and
they do a great job as well. So we're looking forward to working with them. They help us get the
technological edge downpats since we're not that's on our strong suit. So hey radio man,

backstory in this song before you play it. Yeah, Straw House. This is an older tune. We even played
this with the old group before it evolved into this one. I was kind of inspired to start writing
the lyrics because of an unfortunate incident that happened to Tony Robinson, Tony Trell Robinson
back in 2014, I think. And also another another guy Paul Heenan was a long time sound guy and musician
worked at the Crystal Corner in various places. And yeah, it's basically just kind of looking
at that unfortunate kind of epidemic of police brutality, if you will, and whatnot. And it's kind
of just slice a life gazing at that dark stuff and hoping that it can change for the better.

Yeah, you guys makes a lot of styles and just when I think you guys have you pinned, you changed
directions. I want to know who is the band in the band that is most likely to bust out a metal riff.
I voted Nick, but you know that's that's open to you know the moment of whenever it strikes us,
but I did some of the metal riffs that he that he busts out sometimes.
He's a little better at finger tapping and the the distorted arts than me.
Yeah, maybe he's a little modest than I wouldn't say that, but yeah, my vote is Nick.
I just say we can all pull it off, but Caleb is probably the most in the metal I would say in.
Oh, which one's Caleb is the bass player?
Caleb on bass here. I knew it. I knew it had to be the guy playing the ukulele bass.
You know, I mean, leave it to the ukulele bass player to like pull out the metal, you know.
It doesn't get much more metal than the ukulele bass.
Careful we're proflying. Profiling.
You know, in 2019, the band released the album Hi-Rith, and I'm sure none of you thought 2020
we'd get in the way of album promotion. So let's restart it. Tell us about your brand new album Hi-Rith.
All right. Yeah, so it definitely got put on hold a little bit promoting and touring
by the album and we're ready to do that this year. We recorded it in September of August of 2019.
We did a kickstarter. Big thanks for our fans. Help us do that. And we got it done really fast.
It was a collection of tunes. We've been working on for a while, so we were ready to do it,
and we're really happy with the album. We recorded it at Warm Blow Studios right here in Madison too.
I love those guys. Dustin. Exactly. Dustin Harmon. Dustin and crew. Yeah, Dustin is the one
doing stream team as well, so that kind of ran out of that. Oh, nice. Yeah, we had a great time
working with him and hope to keep doing that. Well, let's hear the title track from that album.
What is Hi-Rith about? So Hi-Rith, it's something that I came up with. It's actually a real word.
It's a gaelic word, which it's not in the English dictionary, but it means like a melancholy feeling,
and it's like something you can't really describe. Like from your youth or something over the past
that like, you know, you enjoyed, but it's kind of an indescribable feeling. That's Hi-Rith.
I'm going to, I'm going to emit something to you. When you all sent this songs from Hi-Rith,
rocker and I had to go to YouTube to fight the proper annunciation. Yeah, for doing that.
Google, we had to hear how it would pray. I don't even know. It was kind of weird on Google,
but I think we got it. I have a history of instruments. It seems I'll like that. All right.

like that outdoor festivals, especially in the warmer weather months.

Honestly, it's a really peaceful place.
Nice family environment that kind of just makes you feel like you're at home.
And it's driving for us.
We respect the people, brothers, and everything that they've done for this community.
Especially up there in the Driftless to the ends of the earth.
Yeah, the scenery out there is great too.
All the hills, it kind of makes for natural amphitheaters.
The projecting the sound out, you know, on these little hillsides.
And yeah, it's real cool aesthetically and sound wise.
Yeah, it's nice to just have that kind of full-fledged family environment too.
Or, you know, everyone's welcome.
You know, Teresa Marie and the people, brothers, and live in the devil's layer a couple of weeks ago.
And the one thing that she said about Driftless Gardens that is built on love.
And I think it really comes through in the music that they book out there,
the atmosphere that they have at Driftless Gardens.
It's just like a completely agree.
It's like a rainbow festival.
It's like a unicorns.

I think I saw the soul and moon dance.

Soulgrass is going to be really cool.
It's up on Washington Island, Door County,
and some of our friends, Armchair Boogie, miles over mountains,
checking my arm, Empire.
Moon dance is another really cool thing.
Up north in Wisco.
Spafford is a really awesome.

Jam band.
It'll be there if to car.
We're doing a thing up in high bridge, disc golf course.
We're playing two nights.
Armchair will be there as well and if to car.

But your new member, he's one that makes noise.
He's telling us about your new percussionist.

We got Kyle on percussion now.
He's going to be joining us.
It's a five p's for most of the summer here.
And we're really, really happy to have him.
We've been friends for a long time.
He's been playing with us for a few years as well.
So we've been scouting him.
And he feels like the right time to bring him aboard.

He's been playing a lot of bands around it.

But like Nick said, yeah, I've been chiming in here and there
over the last couple of years and learning some stuff.
And now it's just time to put the pedal to the metal.
What other bands have you played in?
So I play with an eight-piece grateful dead tribute
called Seaside Zoo.
Oh, boy.
Do a lot of stuff around the Madison, Milwaukee area,
as well as a group out of Appleton called Jeremiah James Band.
Nice.
But now full time is full time.
So we're moving in this direction.
I'm just really happy to be part of these fellows' experience
because I got a good group of dudes here that are putting the real effort in
and it's nice just to be around and mesh my experience with theirs.
I did not grow up here in the Midwest.
I grew up out in New Jersey and then...
Oh, yeah, Jersey Boy.
Jersey Boy.

And then I spent six or so years out in Colorado kind of growing up
and the GMC out there.
So it's nice to just make it to the Midwest and find some space
to mesh those two kind of mentalities,
the Americana thing with everything going on out there.
And now we're a good fit, so we're working out.
You got the Traveler part now.

So now you guys are working on some new material, aren't you?
I sure hope so.
And when we expect this, because you know, we're hungry.
Yeah, we've got a bunch of new songs we've been working on.
We've been just kind of slipping them in there
and the live show here and there.
And we'll keep doing that throughout the summer.
We're probably about 10 new originals that passed Hyrith some
of them have been playing, some of them were getting ready to play.
And yeah, it's a lot of different stuff.
And it's been really fun right.
And that's been a positive of the last year off.
It's a good break to kind of work on some stuff like that
and get together more.
And yeah, it's been really productive.
Perfect.

Ain't Gonna Win.
Tell us about that song.
Yeah, Ain't Gonna Win is one Alex wrote.
It was on the last album.
He had a string break, so he's just going to be together here at all.
I'll introduce his song.
It's his tune.
So I can't personally tell you what it's about, but maybe that's better.
I think it kind of has a band, Americana feel.
It's not too predictable chord changes.
And I was one of my favorite tunes on the album.

The man was creative spark on it for inspiration actually was
the 2016 election.
Kind of depressed after that one a little bit.
And there was at least where I got the title from.
It was like Ain't Gonna Win.
Kind of wrote a moody one that was a little slower,
which we needed also.
