I know I call it's too hot.

Yeah, it was I mean, I did go go to the iron ore mines and heat like this and you wouldn't go golfing I'm an indoor person, right?

It was crazy.

Oh, it was hot.

I mean that was like crazy hot.

It was I ran six miles yesterday

Okay.

Yeah, I know it was hot.

I I mean like like hard to breathe hot.

I was like we were talking with we had Lisa in New Orleans,

New Orleans.

I said, it's like breathing through a sponge.

That's kind of how it was yesterday.

I'm not complaining.

I'm not like, wow, it's gonna be 42 below zero.

I know I'm just saying though.

It's like, wow, that was that was really something.

Yeah, it was hot.

The cooking is different, right?

In this heat, because some people say it's too hot to eat.

It's never that hot.

No, I

didn't have that problem.

But I made pasta, shrimp, you know, and I just ate it cold.

I put it in the fridge.

Oh, yeah.

You

know what I mean?

Because I don't want

to eat hot food

right this time of year.

You know what I'm eating a bunch of?

I'm 210, which is good.

That's really good.

Originally, I was, well, during COVID, I was 247.

That's my highest.

That's the highest that when I got my hip replaced I still got in my medical thing.

when they wait me here 247 in that would be January of 2020 So I'm 210 right now.

but but you know what I eat a lot of you know, I love to I cook I eat I just buy frozen chicken breasts or whatever.

I was in Marquette yesterday by Black Rocks felt like it was 85 degrees one mile East.

It felt like a hundred degrees or 65 and then felt

Black Rocks, Brian, Black Rocks is like, you know when people talk about spreading their ashes?

I would spread my ashes or have somebody spread them for me at Black Rocks.

That is my favorite place in the world is Black Rocks on Lake Superior.

Honest to God.

Well, what is it?

It's just, it's right on Lake Superior.

It's on Preskyle.

Which is really cool.

Prescal is amazing.

And it's just, it's almost like lava rock or whatever.

Oh, that's cool.

All the way through right to the water.

So you sit there right where the water is on Lake Superior.

I think it's the most gorgeous place in America.

Yeah.

Brian, if you have any pictures, send me a picture of that.

But Black Rocks is my favorite place on the face of the earth.

And I'm not joking about that.

I'm not lying.

It's just sensational.

I would feel that way about the Grand Canyon.

Yeah, I think I've never been there.

Oh my god.

I know but you I've driven past it Crazy I live right there, and I never went in yeah So I went Terry says one more day of nice warm weather before Wisconsin reality hits I have only 70 and rain on Wednesday But some people welcome that yeah, I kind of enjoyed it because they didn't have to do anything I don't think if I was out

I would have enjoyed it right like last night sitting outside Having a having a line in Google that was nice.

And I thought it was going to be like really hot in there.

Dom had to work a wedding Saturday.

And it's like, oh, you know, in the tux type thing, he said it was crazy.

that we had for a wedding.

The breeze, they opened up the door where the planes go right onto the runway.

But then the other side is.

the doors, what's not as big to take a plane out, but it's quite wide.

And the breeze came through was like perfect.

Well, like I said, for Dom's graduation, somebody brought one of those farm fans.

Oh yeah.

And it was like, it was like this kind of heat and people were like, we're fine.

This is perfect.

Yeah.

And when we had the lady on the other day about the cows, that's like a big thing.

Yeah.

No, they want to treat him right.

But yeah, I did some video.

I'm not that, but you're Mr. Patriarch.

So I did call, I just, for the record, I did call John and ask him to go, but you didn't.

You don't wanna be honest.

I text you and said, you wanna go.

Then you text me back and said, no, but do you have any hot dogs left?

But I, I saw it sat in the bar and I ate three platters of ribs, like, and I enjoyed them to the part where I'm like sucking on the bone to try the last little part of it.

It was so hot on the side.

So like, you know, so I went inside the bar and I ate three platters of ribs and they were absolutely delicious.

That's why I went inside Yeah, I just but it was it would they were great.

They were phenomenal.

I went to a graduation party Saturday Hot hot.

It's just and there's nothing you can do.

That's in that new place that Andy built that endoses

On the second floor, Terry is, it's more of a country theme.

You know, they had brisket and actually really good food.

Pope's Pizza is on the first floor, and that's super nice too.

They can see a lot of people there.

That place is big.

I gotta

stop in there.

That is, in the customer service, there's great.

But yeah, go up to the third floor, take a look around.

They got balconies on the second floor, so you can look over

train camp and Crescent Sturria.

But anyway, you can look over at Lamble.

That is a quite an investment.

And it's it's beautiful.

I gotta stop there and we need to support that because

who the investors in this thing goes, it's just us.

You start with a bar, with a restaurant and build and build and build.

I mean, that's the way it should be done.

So what I was thinking, we got this free enterprise award here in Green Bay, Greater Green Bay, Brown County.

And it's a lot of, you know, Shriver and, you know, they deserve it.

Social Bank, Nicolet, great factories, but guy like him, this guy's an entrepreneur, man.

This guy took a ton of

risk.

Djibouti to Kuwait to Qatar, these different places in the Middle East.

And it cost money.

And I went to see him to see if he could give me $1,000.

I had a list of targets, right?

Cause I had to raise like 7,000.

Went through to ask me a few questions.

He goes, look, we'll pay for all of it.

And she goes, I'm so glad you told me that because there's a lot of talk about the Packers.

I said, you know what?

But she goes, that's who he really was.

I was

really glad when I left that I shared that with her.

Thursday through Sunday for the Blue Ox Outdoor Blue Grass Festival.

Will the weather be good?

Oh, that's a tough question because this week is going to be wild.

We've got the cold front dropping back through the state today.

So this is the last hot, scorching, humid, excessive heat type of day.

And then.

It's kind of parked itself over the state.

So we've got chances for showers and storms pretty much starting this afternoon.

And some of those this evening could be strong to severe.

I mean, we could see some large hail, definitely possible.

Damaging wind gusts in a tornado warning or two is possible as well.

Really?

Yeah.

Hail?

Yeah.

Mm-hmm.

saw your thing the other day about like Northern Minnesota, they got hit really hard, huh?

I know we got

stations up there in

Ely in those places.

They did.

I mean, there were some pretty strong tornadoes on the ground off into the Dakotas and started to move its way into northern Minnesota.

And that line just hit hard, like you said, in towards Duluth, across Lake Superior.

Actually Lake Superior saw like a seash, which is basically you take strong winds across the lake.

They were going, you know, west to east and it kind of took the water and piled it up on the other side of the lake.

So areas like Ashland where the water usually is sitting in certain areas of the bay.

it was actually lower and retreated.

So that kind of happened from those strong storms.

So we've seen a lot of things going on.

Now we've got the community building in

So it changes the depth of the water from one side to the other.

Yeah, I kind of think of like the tides right on the ocean when there's certain times and the poles, the gravity pulls that.

So you kind of see the tide go out or the tide will come in.

That's kind of what happened on Lake Superior the tide went out Which it usually does not do that and you can attest to that being very very rare and it takes a big weather phenomena Or something like that to cause it so the strong winds just all going

We broke records yesterday, 94 degrees in Green Bay.

And so it was feeling like what 105 to about 109.

I don't know where you went to church yesterday, John, but it was the feast of wine.

I went to the prince of peace.

Anyway,

but they had a feast of corpus Christi.

So they you walk outside.

So I was talking to my brother about that and they did a test on Saturday because there's a lot of other people that go to church and

because it was the same weather Saturday of Sunday.

I never went to church again on the day of a game.

So I think for that little march march, that little walk, I think a lot of people throw back on that because with the heat index at 105.

20 minutes later, guess what temperature it was at the

said, Jim, you know, I went to rib fest and I bought a six pack of summer shandy and that was my weekend and Jim went to graduations or different things and you just came back from Pocono, which are the big NASCAR race.

Tell us about your life, your experience in an exciting, exciting field.

Especially after, after

working my real

job.

After being a prison guard,

you're

enjoying retirement like no one else.

Like I said, with COVID post COVID, I was able to retire with my age and the years I had service.

So I saw the light and that was here in Green Bay.

Yep.

Um, then I've been involved in motor racing my whole life and I met Jovert again through the prison, right?

But, um, I was able to get a, like a spotter job down at road America for a NASCAR team.

Cause I had worked at tracks and you say, tell people

what that is.

Um, you're basically the eyes for the driver.

And with such a big track there, you have to have three spotter.

Can't see the whole thing.

No.

So you have to somebody to cover corners and whatnot.

So I had an opportunity to do that.

And I was like, well, this is great.

I want to do some more.

Where are you when you're spotting?

Um, well, there they put you in different positions.

Uh, well, you have to have one spot where

you're on a level or you up.

You're

high somewhere.

You're

required at every track they have.

You're with the NASCAR officials.

Someone has to be there.

I would get up there sometime.

This is a guy who watches that.

That'd be a cool angle.

Anyway, go see that.

I did that for the first year helping out a team out of South Carolina.

And so I said, I can do more.

So the next year I did 13, but I just started helping on the car.

Because I was way out of my league.

Because on some of the tracks I got to Andy, they put me up into a great big pagoda if you've been there.

And I said, I can't do this here.

I said, I'm going to kill your driver.

I wasn't ready for that.

And by any means, I mean, the spotter is such an important, important job.

I just

want to say one thing, Dave.

I think every, OK, two sports that a television doesn't do justice, pro hockey and racing, big time racing.

OK.

And because the speed of both sports is unbelievable.

If anybody could go to Road America and get on that bridge that goes across there from the press box and stand above there and watch these cars go by underneath you, you'll have such a different appreciation for what these people do.

It's incredible.

I agree.

Well, when I worked for a short track team years ago in the 90s, I had to end up giving up traveling with that.

So I became an official, which

Joe got me into that.

I became a flag man.

So I did that for about 24 years.

And standing in that flag tower and having the cars and the WIRs that even on the dirt track with the wingspring cars, it is amazing.

It's amazing.

Yeah.

Goes right through your body.

It does.

It goes right through your legs, right through

your body.

Yeah.

The ultimate way to understand it is to be in the car.

I was with their mayor's conference in Indianapolis one time and they took us out and that's crazy.

Yeah.

And I'm sure you've been in the car.

I got to race as well.

I raced one race in my entire life.

And Joe put me up to it.

I think you were in that race at 141.

And I was he because I was supposed to be in the fireman and police race the week before.

And then there was the media race.

Yeah.

So Joe put me up as Dave Daniels of WXYZ.

Did I win?

I led every lap at one and it was a it was a driver.

that it was an actual driver before.

Well, he punted me into the corner in the very last.

You know, I got to tell you,

it's funny because people are like, oh my God, you're only going like 30 miles an hour.

No, we were going like 75, whatever.

And it felt like you were hanging on for dear life.

Yeah.

It was like a

whole different feeling when you're inside that car.

I was ready to give my heart and my wallet to the owner of the car.

I said, I'll pay for it.

I want you to get.

Yeah, absolutely.

So what

a great career, though.

What a great how fun second, you know, side light you've got.

Well, I'm with I'm now

into my seventh, seventh year with NASCAR stuff.

Right.

And I worked for a team out of Florida, Lake Wales, Florida, Mario Gosselin racing.

He's really a Canadian driver.

They moved families all down in Florida.

And it's a husband and a wife.

And they have two daughters that they run this team against.

It's David versus Goliath every week.

Wow.

And it's it's amazing.

And I'm blessed every week to be able to do it.

Tell me what, so you got, there's probably people listening who would love your job right now.

There's some and I try to give them the direction.

I would

love your job right now.

What I want to say about, and I said this before we went on the air, I think the racing industry is super friendly.

Unbelievable.

They just, it's like, I told

them it's like going to a tailgate party every

race.

Well, like a week ago, we were just racing in Mexico City.

NASCAR took the top two tiered.

leagues, you know, the cup and the Xfinity series down there.

It was amazing, but people were really against it.

Everybody was apprehensive going out of the country.

So it turned out to be great, you know, 90 percent great.

There were some snafus travel here and there, but a few people with the food, but it was awesome.

And I've built.

I've always felt

that the two of all the interviews I've done in covering sports over my lifetime, the two groups of people that are like the most generally nice.

Hockey players and race car drivers, and I really truly

mean that

I just

I still play hockey too by the way I play in a sleep a senior league on Sunday night at cornerstone.

nice 35 and older nice.

I'm 58.

nice.

That's great.

Yeah, we talk about I'm gonna talk about the racing I'll talk about

you

but I just would say that we talk about active seniors how Socialization is something that we have to do more of and

be it volunteering on a, or you get paid, but I'm volunteering at a community event

being in a senior hockey thing, but because that isolation is right up there with like cancer.

It's very, very, very serious and depression.

I mean, you're a good example of how to live life after

you have to, I'm lucky.

I'm, I lost every day.

Like I'm a military vet.

I got, I did that five days after high school.

I saw some stuff, learned some stuff.

got out, worked in the prison for 30 years, saw way too much stuff.

And then things happened.

You know, we all go through things in life and you build up and you survive it and you keep moving on.

People don't realize, well, good with NASCAR though.

I mean, those guys are rock stars who may show up at a place, aren't they?

It's pretty cool.

Yeah.

Yeah, it's pretty cool.

And it's humbling at the same time.

I'm like, how am I being able to rub elbows with all these people?

Like, I'm at Smith in our pit box.

He's associated with another gentleman

from Green Bay here.

He worked in Asker for many, many years

for

Fox.

And, uh, and he says the same thing.

These guys are rolling rocks.

They're

coming to town.

It's pretty cool.

And it's, it's, it's, it's honorable and it's fun.

And I just love it.

And people are like, how, how do you like doing this?

It's, it's hard work.

These guys that are full time, they worked their tails off.

They really do.

There's a very small margin of error, isn't there?

Yeah.

You don't want to leave a nut or bolt loose on something.

And so that's why I limit myself what I do on the cars.

Right.

And they know that.

And I'm a support role, kind of like a linebacker in a kitchen.

Make sure everything's where it needs to be.

And I'm like, they call me the tape guru kind of guy.

Make

sure everything is like specific.

Oh, well, if the boss needs something because I'm working for the crew chiefs, if he needs something, I want to make sure I have the right tool ready for him when he needs it.

So how many people are on that team?

So you have who's your driver right now?

We have Ryan Ellis Okay, and we have with two cars with the potential of having four because the team owns the number So some days you'll have like Daytona.

We had Natalie Decker last year, and we had two other drivers So Josh Blicke from down by Milwaukee in hubris area He drives 75% of the other car and then they switch it up guys bring sponsorship and right

to the game.

But I said to be a car owner in that in that league alone, I don't know how they do it.

And I asked my boss every week, the money wise.

Yeah.

Right.

I just I mean, just even to bring me along.

And I'm right, you know.

Yeah.

And then so I want to ask you something else about that.

Go back and think about it.

I want to talk about the industry.

Like you guys have bigger stadiums and NFL stadiums.

Yeah.

And is it people still loving it?

Oh, yeah.

I mean, you go.

Well, it has changed.

But you scored a personal.

It's gotten expensive.

Yes.

I mean,

I remember I used to go to some races when I lived in Phoenix, in Arizona.

We had the PIR, Phoenix International Raceway and the different thing.

And it was like five bucks or whatever.

And now I got buddies that, you know, used to travel around and follow certain guys because they will say this, that's one of those sports where you've got a guy and you follow them.

And they're talking about Chicago and some of these places.

And it's like, whoa.

Yeah.

It's

an expensive ticket.

We're in Chicago for the Fourth of July.

It's our third year.

Wow.

Yeah, the street course.

They're building.

They're putting it together right now.

So, okay, that's where you go through the city.

Correct.

Yeah.

That's a very, very popular

race.

Everybody's against it in the beginning.

Yeah.

But until you experience it.

Well, Detroit did that too.

Yeah.

I remember when Detroit did that and people were like, oh, this is kind of cool.

Well, that's kind of the

way...

Like started and they would race through the

city.

Yeah, that were many many many moons ago Wow, that's why they still do that parade they do with the race car and

it's six deep the people that come out for that You know, that's only 900 people in that whole city, but I think it thousands of people

I'm opening an ask her to go back there because they left a couple years ago.

They did Chicago took that date, but that place was just packed

I used to love covering that.

Actually, the two things I loved the most covering at Road America was when the Indy Cars.

I'd be interviewing, like, I remember interviewing Paul Newman

and,

you know, Mario Andretti, and

it's

like, oh,

this

is really cool.

I was with my nephew at Elkhart, and we met at Mario because he did a school report on him.

And he actually did a phone interview with them at him, and what a swell guy.

Great guy.

Oh, yeah.

Tiny.

lot of those racers are so small.

That's your gotta be a Jackie.

You gotta be.

Yeah.

But I'll tell you what, the courage, I don't care what anybody says about sports, the courage it takes to get into one of those cars and go 200 miles an hour is unbelievable.

Well, it's like I have the guy I travel with every week.

He's from down by the Rockford area, Rob Goodman.

And he's a, he's a, he works for Chevy dealership.

He makes sure I don't get on the wrong airplane.

That's, that's why I always say that one.

And, um,

He raced and I hear the stories and he built this car from scratch and then you're putting your butt in that seat Yeah, and it's like my gosh.

Yeah,

so but all these drivers in the cars and it's just it's so big That you know your local dump so many guys from this area can actually go do that

so but it's tough to make it's tough to make a living though doing that stuff

There's so many cars in these fields these days though, huh?

my brother's a big he lives in Tucson He's a big followers a kid from Tucson that's in the cup now

And just following him, it's like it's it's it's people don't understand the journey just to be in that field

on a

Sunday afternoon.

And some of the young guys coming in now don't understand that.

How did you get into that?

And talk a little bit about your dad that you had this as you were a kid, right?

My dad, uh, my grandpa was a mechanic on the north side of town.

He worked on all the Packer player's cars.

Yeah.

Cause he, he can't fix it.

Nobody can kind of thing.

Um, so my cousin Craig maternal from Green Bay where he moved, he raised.

So I got to be a little kid, get my hands dirty.

Well, then as the time progressed, I went.

out of high school, went to the military, got out, started helping again.

So my cousin backed out of it, because Costa Racing got to be so much.

Well, then I was able to link up with a guy in Minnesota named Jim Weber.

I can put gas in your car.

I can take your lug nuts and grab a hold.

So I started there, did that, helped him for five years.

Then I had to quit traveling.

So Joe Virgins, I met him at the prison.

He says, hey, you know, they're looking for...

official job spotters and whatnot.

So like, okay, I did that.

So I don't have to, I can be home every night.

So then, hey, you ought to be a, they need a flag man.

So then I went to Chilton, then I went to Seymour, then Luxembourg and just, it took off.

I was doing three to four nights a week, traveling with you.

love those small

tracks.

Right.

It's unbelievable.

Yeah.

And the flag man, the, the checkered flag,

the flashing

flag, that's all

you.

Yeah, Jim used to go to 141

just

to chase

chicks.

That well.

And he admits

it.

Was there any pizza thrown up on the ceiling?

I heard the stories about that place.

Oh, yeah.

That flag, man.

Don't

tell you about the time he had to control me from going down after my producer.

No,

no.

I'm

going to hear it though.

Any nerves with that?

Because you're

listening to

somebody telling you.

There's got to be a little pressure with that because if you do that wrong, it's

like Yeah, you definitely it's a pucker moment So and as technology moved on the race severs they call them every driver has communication in their health in their ear and Someone up in the scoring tower saying hey, there's a caution or whatnot.

They help you out Well when that first started out

Had the headset with that and talking so one button on one side and the other on the other Wow, they're going to green next time by and you got to get your stuff together and you know But the best thing with that you have to talk to the drivers after the race They're mad at you.

They're coming at you, right?

So my policy was I will hit me.

I'm gonna sue you.

I'm gonna press charges You know funny about that

is those guys are so unbelievably competitive.

Okay,

but before a race if somebody

Needs a part or whatever.

Everybody will help

for the most part.

Do you

know what I mean

beforehand?

They're all great But then what's that foot?

What's that flag goes down?

Oh, I'm unbelievably competitive

and then it's later on if something happens with that driver you know, right?

Don't ever do it again.

There will be a

fight.

Yeah, it can happen.

It can happen

Why would a driver be upset with the flag man

for a call or I didn't see somebody?

Oh, oh guy way over another corner hit me somewhere here There you miss this and I'm like but back then that's where

The starter, that's what you call the official was, you made all the calls.

You made all the calls and it's on you.

So I was like, you got to learning after a couple of guys get in your face and they're hot.

They just got our race cards 130 degrees and spit a little bit and maybe they've had time to cool off before I got an hour more to work and they come and jump on you right at the end of the night.

So you give them a half an hour to cool off talk and said, we'll talk about it.

And after that, if you come.

if you've been drinking a beer or two already, so you better have one for me, or we're just gonna be done here.

Okay,

I'm gonna say this though too, because I've covered racing for a lot of years.

Some guys are just jerks.

I don't know some are as a person

There's a

couple names and you would agree

they could be mean and nasty, but I don't know I look you're being the official you gotta I judge everybody equally I'm working in the joint.

You had to treat everything but equally so

we got so many things we could talk to you about that if tell us what being a prison guard

I Needed a job with a benefit plan take care of my family.

I got a service sure, okay, so

and back at $8.09 an hour.

Yeah, when I first started, 1990.

And like, I could do this.

I was a police officer top in the Air Force.

So I'm like, I could do this.

And I got my eyes opened real quick.

Like, remember Brian Tilke?

Yeah.

He was another racer.

All of us worked in the prison.

Tom Christensen, he was a flagman.

He was my captain.

So racing kind of.

I got accepted into that fraternity there.

One

of my great listeners to my old show, Mino and Divin Manor, Mino Nick was a walking boss, we called him.

We gave everybody a nickname.

He's from Francis Creek, because they would call us while they were working, so we had to use a

different name.

Yeah, can I get an old sideline, please?

Yeah, I remember people trying to do that.

The career in prison, and there's openings.

Right?

Yeah, they're looking a lot now.

They're looking a lot now.

That's it.

And I don't want my knowledge.

I've been through there a number of times, but it's on.

Should we keep it open or not?

But I don't ask you about that.

But how was that career?

I mean, you went there for benefits and to take care of your family and God

bless you for that.

But then you

stayed for 30 years.

I did a long time.

Well, I got like I was blessed to be on Night Shift.

I was the fire watch.

And you've seen the old person.

That's an old place.

So I have to walk to all the buildings at night.

Every creek sound air compressor that would go off up.

You're looking over your shoulder like, what is this?

Well, then we had a few escape attempts.

And so now we we're going to go in the yard and look for somebody.

Were you there when the guy Joel told us the story?

A guy fashioned a rope out of dental floss.

Yeah, I was there.

I was working that day.

I know right where it was.

Yeah.

first shift.

Yeah.

And then we had a little guy.

He had he had an accent and he says he comes running in from there's a ramp that comes into the main rotundary.

They're going over to wall.

That's all we have a day.

It was a pretty well planned deal.

Wow.

They got a lot of that's because I

think it's something funny So the owner he actually owns a tire shop in Bellevue.

This is the guy next door on this way not the creamer.

Yeah.

Yeah, so

I'm gonna buy some tires from them, okay?

So a truck pulls up this morning and Jim goes, oh, that's the owner of the car.

So I go running and I go, hey, where's my tires?

And the guy goes, excuse me, sir, I don't know what you're talking

about.

They're on the same truck though.

anyway, Dave Depprey, this is fascinating stuff.

Tell me a little okay, we're gonna talk we're gonna we got a lot of things to talk about and during the break here There's some things we can't talk about but life as a prison guard what tell us about day-to-day what that is like and what are the people like that are locked up in Green Bay Correctional Facility

most of maximum security prison.

Yeah, you know and so it's The minute the door slams behind you when you go to work you have eight hours of not knowing what's gonna happen, you know and

It could happen at a second.

But that is

a tough place.

I mean, like, like as Joe says all the time, no one's in there for missing Sunday school.

Correct.

mean, you said eight hours, but it's actually what?

Well, you can

they were doing 12s and they're moving because of staffing shortages.

They had to, you know, it's 24 seven in there.

So it doesn't stop.

But my thing every morning when I walked in because I ended up being a eight to four guy.

And so the breakfast meal was already going on when I got in and I could sense.

Everyone and I got in if I either smelled burnt toast or mace because you could get the smell of like there might have been a fight in the dining hall.

That's one of the key places that when there's mass movement stuff, they they'll do their stuff.

You know, I like one of the things that Joe had in his book where the prisoners are going to strike over something.

They weren't going to, you know, blah,

blah, blah hunger strike.

Yeah.

And it's like, OK, well, then you know what?

We're canceling the bacon cheeseburger night.

And then people are like, OK, we're done.

Well, and in there.

It can, an example of one thing is there's a guy that he got, they're not inmates anymore.

They're persons under our care.

I think they changed the name a couple of times, but I've been out of there now for four and a half years.

So I'm hopefully forgetting more.

The guy got beat up so bad and he was laying, laying on the ground.

This is a

prisoner or guard?

A resident.

A resident, okay.

That's what you call him.

All right.

And the other inmates are not going to miss a meal.

They walked over to guy.

We're going to the kitchen, they're eating.

And the one I saw, the guy got clubbed over there,

over

the head with something.

And that was a mess.

That was probably one of the most gruesome mess I've ever seen.

And we got to get this cleaned up.

Chow's coming.

Here they come.

They're going to eat.

We got to filter the guys in.

You know, you got average of 750 and

our guys there, they want to eat.

OK.

I got a couple of questions for you on that.

I'm going to get back to you, Racing, but I want to stick with the person for a little while.

I teach at NWTC and students are there to get an advanced degree.

Not sure.

Just

want a quick thing here.

Oh my gosh.

I mean,

that back there are battling

racing.

They have done so much to help me keep on the road.

Joe, I'll go there.

They're keeping one of my trucks together for me right now.

It doesn't much of a body left on it, but I'm going to run it and run it and run it.

They've been so generous to so many people over the years, knowing them guys.

It's

awesome.

Yeah.

But you spent 30 years in the prison.

You must still have some contacts there, followed a little bit.

But this is my question.

Would you advise someone to look into that?

Because when I see the wages, they seem acceptable to me.

I mean, the average household in Green Bay, it's in 48, 50, 53,000.

$30, $36 and I had $72,000 plus the benefits are good, right?

Cause you get paid for your holidays and stuff.

I'm sure I don't know what the benefits are, but to me financially that sounds like, wow, if I was 24 years old, I got a degree in something sociology or whatever.

Tell me about

that.

That's a carrot.

Dangle that carrot in front of you.

It looks good.

It's a lot.

A lot of money.

When I started, I did it just because we had a benefit package, sick leave.

health insurance, but, and then the overtime, you, you got to be there to get the money.

So there, that, that carrot's there.

If you want to make the money, you can make a lot of money, but you have to be there to get it.

Is it dangerous?

Yes.

I'll say yes.

As a guard.

Yes.

Cause you're amongst everybody.

And I survived it because I, I had the mindset of anybody can take a wrong turn and be there.

Whether it be for a heinous crime, murder crime, anybody can.

And I treat everybody equally.

They're still human being whether I try not to know what they're coming over to see like in the hospital area worked I didn't want to know what they're being seen for as long as we behave so I think I made it I want I had a guy that mentored me a little bit towards retirement and saying win Get out of there.

You won the game.

You know,

how do you survive?

Like if one of us is you know, whatever happens and you accidentally kill somebody or whatever what?

How would, how would you survive?

Like, how would I survive in prison?

Hmm.

Do you get in there and kill somebody just to get some street cred?

Well, that's, I don't know, that's a whole different ball game.

It's just a

ball

game.

It's

just a can of coins.

But you know what I'm saying though?

It's like, somebody told me one time you would survive because you could be the funny guy and they love people that are entertaining.

How, how does a normal person average size, you know, not like the tough guy in the cell black, how does somebody survive?

Um, well, I was money.

Uh, if you have something to offer, I think to the table, education wise, there's guys that were doing legal work.

Um, yeah.

Um, mind your own business, but there's always going to be somebody wanting to know your business.

So, you know, people don't, before they go there, you know, you want to be a tough guy.

You don't think of the consequences down the road.

Like, uh,

I might not be going home.

You know, I can't tell you something right when I was in I actually read at high school Played fast-pitched softball in the UP and the Marquette State prison was in our league.

Oh my yeah, and that's a hard

core That's a hard one now

prison.

That's all the guys from Detroit the murderers from Detroit are sent up there because I think they wanted them to be away from their element, okay?

Yeah, so we play phenomenal athletes.

I'll be honest with you, but We would have a guard right behind us, you know with a semi-automatic red car beat, but

Okay, if you you know the old scared straight things, okay We would have the cons behind our dugout talked about what they wanted to do sexually yes to us if we come there Okay,

we I've heard a few of those scared straight

and it's it's like

wow

I don't care what happens I'm not gonna be this 19 year old kid going to this prison cuz life is gonna be really really bad And they were blatant about it.

Yeah,

how well what was going to happen?

And now you can't talk to you can't talk to people like that anymore

really

No, you can't go in there.

You can go in there and be counseled.

They'll have honor and make kind of groups and stuff.

These I don't know if they started doing it, but the scared straight.

We had that.

But now these kids are soft.

You know, no, it's emotional.

You can't do that.

You can't yell at them anymore.

I guess.

OK, so there is this one con.

OK, whose name was delicious.

I'm just being totally honest with you.

No.

OK, looked exactly like a like Lola Fulana.

OK, OK.

And she was like coming on to me.

Who?

And these other cons got so mad, it was unbelievable.

Okay.

Do you believe that?

Yeah.

I want to make up a story like that.

Yeah.

I mean, and there's people and whether it be they're doing time, your mind changes or whatever your preferences are, we had a few that were very feminine in a way and where they act and carried themselves.

She looked just like.

What's it?

Was it a she?

It was a guy.

It had looked like.

Yes.

Yeah.

I was coming on to you.

Yes.

And they got mad because they were jealous that she was flirting with me.

Wow.

Yes.

Maybe Lola was their property.

Right.

That's what I mean.

It was like,

yeah, there's their stories that

to the point where the guard said, hey, I got this cell open.

If something happens, you run to that cell, we'll lock you in.

Yeah.

Okay.

I just got to get an answer to my question.

I was a good looking guy.

Yeah.

Of course you were, John.

Our quarterback.

You're a baseball player though, right?

Yes.

So was Lola.

And, and the catcher who was baby bolt was his name was a real tough guy.

He came over, he put his arm around me in the dugout to let everybody know.

So anyway, so the next inning this, I don't make this crap up.

So the next inning when, okay, the guy gets whatever.

So I come up to bed and the second baseman's name was shaking big and he goes,

Blackbob goes yo shaky.

Watch out for this dude.

This mother bleeper.

When he be running, he be mumbling and smoking.

I know.

Oh my god.

You've watched the longest

yard 20 times.

Yes.

All right.

Before we move on, I want to talk about a career.

Yes.

Because people always ask.

I'm thinking of this, I'm thinking of that.

When they ask about radio, I try to steer them.

No, I said, look, if you want to do it, come and intern here, get a feel for how it works.

Would you encourage your grandson now, I guess?

That's

what

I was

alluding to.

I don't think I'd want my children to work in that environment.

No.

brother was county sheriff for 24 years.

Up in Mission Marquette State, he was president of the Michigan Sheriff's Association, okay?

And his son was going into criminal justice and he absolutely did not want him to be a prison guard and stuff.

Well, like say for my son, unfortunately for him, anybody asked where's your parents meet?

We say we met in prison.

My ex-wife now, she worked there.

grandma

did two years in

federal prison.

She was working.

No, she was on the other side.

She was a con.

That is kind of

funny that we

met in prison.

Yeah, but there's,

in Joe's book, though, there's several couples that, you know, you create a family, things that were, it's tough.

You work six, six hours, but in a way it was kind of nice because you can kind of understand what you're

doing every day.

So, okay.

All right, that answers my question.

Last one, then we'll move on to racing.

I'm not moving on.

This

thought we came here to talk about racing.

All right, John, can do what he wants.

The prisoners talked about being closed, and it's been debated for years.

It seems like it's getting some momentum now.

There's some money set aside.

It seems like both Republicans and Democrats, what are your thoughts on that?

can't see it closing, because I was a union steward.

for nine years.

I got to see some stuff from the Madison paperwork numbers and whatnot.

This money's here.

Also, that money disappeared.

So it's like, well, not in my business, but what's going on here.

But I saw the upgrades going on in there.

Yes.

And major, major,

major, major dollars.

We were at a couple of those ribbon cuttings there, but that's an investment.

Yeah.

Okay.

I just was curious.

Does it to build a new one?

Where do you get the land?

Where do you build a new one?

And what's the future of corrections or

you know, or whatever incarceration, because people are still going to make mistakes.

Oh, yeah, that never

has never stopped in my days.

Well, as far as what's going on in the world today, Portland was pretty interesting.

And some of the homeless stuff, it's sad.

It really is.

But it's everywhere.

Like last weekend, two weekends ago in Mexico City.

They have 30,000 people homeless down in that city.

Is Jackson, Michigan still holds a race?

Yes, they were there just two weeks ago.

We were off that weekend.

They had the cup cars and the trucks were there.

OK.

But going through Jackson, that prison there, you're talking with that.

That's

a tough place.

And when you have signs to say, do pick up hitchhikers and both sides of the highway, there's fence and it's the prison.

Yeah.

And I think there's like 20,000 guys.

That's right.

I can't believe what's his name.

The actor that we talked about, the comedian.

He did home improvement.

Tim Allen.

Tim Allen was in Jackson prison.

Isn't that crazy?

That's where he had to go.

I wonder how we survived.

I'm telling Joe.

We were talking about

that during the break.

Where

do you race locally, Wisconsin?

Now, if I give a time off, I'll go, like I was in Eagle River.

I went up with Joe a week ago.

I went to Eagle River just for the night.

Then I got home from Mexico.

Hey, and I give Joe credit.

He did that whole race and came back, was here at seven o'clock the next

morning.

Yeah, we saw 28 deer on the way home.

Yeah, but so locally if I can go I WIR that's where I pretty much grew up watching and got my start fishating there if I can get there I haven't been there yet this year

Um, but 141 speedway.

Yeah.

I love

that way.

Joe and I used to do those and tip to Faniac.

I remember that.

I wonder if, uh, although if I never hear Joe, when, when somebody loses a tire to say you, you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel, if I never hear that again, I'm

I'm just wondering if, you said the market's good, strong, but I'm wondering if there's, you run like a come on back thing for those of us who used to go to racing,

don't have kids and think, you know.

I've stayed my whole life.

You gotta put on a good show for people.

They want to

come early and go home early.

I've always lived with that.

I've listened to Joe for years.

There's this promotional stuff.

And like, you want to get them to the track, make them enjoyable, but you don't want to go there and get.

Like a dirt track.

They don't want to go there and get totally covered in mud hit with rocks.

So you got to try to prepare everything

properly.

I gotta be honest with you.

We actually stopped televising because the dust was so bad it was ruining our cameras and our

equipment.

Oh, sure.

Yeah.

We were talking about it's competitive now.

I mean, there's so many things to do.

Yeah.

Oh, my

gosh.

Look at the paper.

Just, you know, for Saturday a million things to do and then there's this indoor football.

There's outdoor.

But they kind of entertained between

quarters between you may say it's more.

They're either throwing stuff out to the crowd,

or they're

doing a band or a dance or something.

Even the Bucks, I think, and I don't know that they'd really need to do that, but that's a lot of fun to go to again.

They've really done a good job there, I think, at that arena.

Joe mentioned that too with racing.

They've had to follow those.

To keep them out of the way.

they get to come in, they see the trucks, they get to walk in by the garage, interact by the cars, when we do an adjustments, like there's certain times you're allowed to fire the motors up, they're there and they're holding their ears, they're just in shell shock, but they're like, this is so cool.

To give a kid a lug nut, you know, or the autograph cards, hero cards they call them, and the fans that collect stuff.

They carry backpacks.

But they cost the drivers and teams a lot of money for all these cards.

And then people take them and they sell them on the internet.

I've heard about that.

Yeah, there's a market for stuff like that.

But every week I'm in a new shirt.

It's like.

We're going to be sending to a break, but we want to talk more about the veteran project you guys are involved with.

That's great.

And

thank you for what, the day after high school you signed?

Five days after high school.

Five

days after high school.

I was gone.

Wow, that's incredible.

Where'd you go to high school?

Green based okay, and you

signed up right so you had it all planned.

Well, it wasn't college material.

I got a letter of intent they intended me not coming Five days after high school I was in the Air Force my whole family served my dad uncle's

you lost

an uncle.

Yeah, yep in the war Yeah, World War two that was my dad's oldest brother.

Is that where your passion comes from?

Serving and seeing the look on my grandpa's face when he saw us in uniform

My cousins that went into same thing.

Yeah.

And that's impressive.

Do you ever get stationed up at K I Sawyer?

I wanted to.

You

know

what happens up there?

People from the south in different places get stationed there and then they live there.

Yeah, they love that area around the lakes Yeah, I was up in Popple Creek deer hunting when I was in high school and those jets came flying over the woods 52s I think they were they have four phantoms at the time is

that we'd be playing a ball game and a B 52 would become we were in Gwyn would be pointing Gwyn and we the game would stop the referees the umpires Would call a timeout because everybody just wanted to stand and look at that thing coming in for a landing.

Yeah, they were so amazing.

We're being joined by a man that is just fascinating, Dave Deppre, who works for NASCAR on a regular basis, but also a veteran yourself, your uncle was killed in New Guinea.

A horrible place.

New Guinea was as bad as anywhere our troops have ever fought with the 32nd Division, which right now is being deployed to the Middle East.

But but but either way, just a great legacy.

But Dave, let's talk a little bit about something else you're very passionate about as far as honoring our fallen military personnel, please.

Yeah, just acknowledging them.

And if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be talking today or saying what we want to say today.

So, you know, I hear horror stories.

of everybody else who's gotten wounded, lost their lives.

And with racing, I mean, they, the military guys every day that are there every weekend, there's flyovers, people wonder why we wasted money doing that.

But I caught the sound of freedom.

And like we had a C 17 to our flyover set on Saturday.

It was awesome.

Came right down, right down pit road.

And so I mean,

Shake hands with the veterans.

We have veterans.

We have truck drivers that I had a guy that pits next to us every week that he was blown up I guess he's the only one to survive in a vehicle.

He's a truck driver for the teams now and You know, I want to shake his hand.

I want to give him a hug.

Yeah, but I salute guys and it's really really neat how racing Embraces the military.

Let's talk a little bit about your program.

You got

Yeah, I was lucky enough last year to

The Gold Star, Gold Star families, you've lost somebody in battle or even peacetime, they were standing behind me at the race.

the chamber, this business, the business that you focus on, do you consider the United Way, the Boys and Girls Club businesses, the social side of your community?

Absolutely.

And nonprofits, you need to operate as a business when you're a non-profit.

phrase non-profit doesn't mean you're not trying to make a profit.

And I tell

you, this is one of the worst labeling

things that

we've done.

Ever.

We just tell you can't invest in a nonprofit.

I mean there's reasons there's things you can and cannot do in a nonprofit But they don't pay taxes, you know, I mean that's the big thing

It is it is but we need them.

I work I work

at home a shelter I mean, we're nonprofit,

but right and imagine if you had to pay taxes They're there go your profits that you need to reinvest back into the company and the organization,

right?

Yeah, so it makes sense.

this area could use a little bit more teamwork amongst the different entities.

So what kind of programs do you have that you think won

I mean, you have you have no membership for new businesses, which I think is to

small businesses who qualify.

What have you got going

on?

Well, we're talking about why the chamber is nice to say, but why your chambers, the number one chamber in the United States.

And rightfully so, you do some things for small new businesses, but you also put on relevant seminars

and program it.

You're right.

So first of all, to answer your question, when we applied for the award, you had to spotlight two of your key programs.

And that was our connect free membership for free membership for small businesses and our October fest event, which I know you guys.

Love that too.

The third factor, I think, is the fact that myself and our CEO are both from the UP.

Escanaba.

She's the only

person I know that went to High School in Iron Mountain and Escanaba.

Why?

Two big cities.

But we always like to be proactive.

And stay on top of what's new.

And that's why I wanted to mention our AI Business Summit coming up on.

It's November 5th.

It's a day-long summit.

We've got amazing speakers.

We have a keynote and a closer.

And then in between we have breakouts.

So our breakouts are three different sessions you can choose from.

We have three of them.

She is a nationally known futurist and she'll talk about AI and the trends in the future.

So she's our keynote and then the rest are Wisconsin based speakers.

We have several case studies like Plexus.

Jewelers Mutual, Galloway are talking about how they're using AI in their businesses.

And then we have other, we have some marketing topics like AI in social media, AI in your sales funnel.

We have some lawyers coming on to talk about the legal implications of AI.

I mean, this is here to stay.

I remember when they first talked about this, it's like, oh, wow, that, it's like, whoa.

That's good doing Google.

I mean, it's just, it's huge.

And everybody, the people that use it,
